He is a good teacher, but he grades very hard...
Helpful if you ask. Hates slackers.
Aced class, but would never take again or recommend. Condescending, poor communication, and seemed apathetic about teaching.
Fun class. Knows his stuff. Hard, though.
knows what he's talking about, expects a lot
Hard teacher. He knew what he was talking about and expects that you do too. You have to read the book to do good. Grades hard
No Comments
Very hard to get a good grade
poor communication, not respecting studdent...
Tends to skew issues/events to fit his personal opinions. Does *not* know his stuff as much as he seems to think. Lack of research on his part was obvious on many points. Good thing he doesn’t teach history.

Best instructor on campus. Teaches in a way that you can actually APPLY what you're learning. Wish other instructors took the same care he does. Knows exactly what he's talking about and then some. Truly brilliant.
Likes suck ups and seems to grade to that scale. If you want to pass his class, become the teachers pet.
I love that Greg has his own ideas. Original ideas and material is hard to come by and is his strong point. He is also technically savvy but is a bit to hard while grading.
Very challenging, very fun. Great books and excellent discussions. He knows his stuff but lets students learn on their own. Great class! I will take more from him.
He has been SO helpful! GREAT TEACHER!

He's a good teacher, thinks highly of himself. But overall this class wasn't too difficult. Sometimes he can be rude to certain students. He does seem to like suck-ups.
This class really did have soo much potential. Greg seems like such a great, cool, and fun guy. But he forgot about so many things during the course of our class me and many students were constantly frustrated. He took forever to grade things..and didnt repsond to emails very well. He did have good lectures and being in the class wasnt so bad.
Aced his class but would not recomend him as an instructor. Condescending towards students, does not seem interested in teaching. He takes forever to grade papers. I never even got the scores on my last five papers, though I assume they were above 90.
Excellent teacher. Keeps the class interested in what he teaches. If you didn,t like english before, you will like it with this teacher
Great instructor, but hard on grading. He said essays are never perfect, so he does not give 4.0 on any essay. Not recommended if you want good grade. Do the final portfolio seriously because it can change your grade greatly!
This class was fun, but very frustrating. Van Belle never returns graded work when he says he will. He just doesn't seem to care about how you're doing. The quarter's over, and I still don't have at least 6 assignments graded. Don't take any class taught by him...he doesn't respect students enough to grade their work. He's very lazy...BEWARE!
This would have been a great online class had we been given more feedback from the instructor. Final grade appeared on transcript even though we didn't get grades back on 6 assignments, including the final writing portfolio worth 20% of our grade. In this arragement, submitting all assignments to be "workshopped" would have been more productive.
Who told him he could teach? This is the worst class I have taken in a long time. He does not care about his students, and he does not know what he is doing half the time. What a waste of time and money. Yuck!
He is very rude and doesn't offer alot of instruction, yet isn't shy about calling a student uneducated. He takes forever to grade papers and is so spastic he hardly makes sence. However, he claims to "fly by the seat of his pants" and still do a great job, but he lacks focus and hardly teaches anything

Greg is great. He is very tough and you need to really understand the material to do well on essays and tests. He is very helpful IF YOU ASK! If you cheat or don't do the work don't expect respect from him. He really doesn't like slackers! Be ready for a challenge :o)
I had no idea that online experience could be so bad! Utterly dull and lazy teacher, not helpful and does not teach at all. half of the time there was no work, but big paper at the end of the quarter.
had an online class with him. Had Bb problems which i explained, Vanbelle procedes to insult the grammer in my email. Tells me I "need a better grasp of english before i take his class." Aced engl 161, besides how does he know im not an ESL student? Confrontational, insulting and apathetic, really doesnt care what happens as long as he gets paid.
Fantastic Instructor. Was hard to get in touch with, and rarely replied to emails. Classes were very fun, and I highly enjoyed everything about them.
I don't really know why but I don't like him. He tells us everything we ever learned was wrong. He chooses a retarded theme for a hard class and expects to only spend time on HIS class stuff so he assigns a butt load of crap assignments and then grades you horribly. grr.
This guy is a way below average teacher. He is unhelpful, mean and shallow. He never grades our papers on time and never really cares if one has learned anything! I am sorry I took his class!
Not really sure what these other people are talking about. Greg's class is fascinating. He has high expectations and is very helpful. Take his class.
Awful teacher. Very lazy and does not care about teaching. Couldn't be a worse experience than this one.
I excel in English and Writing. In my past English classes taken at college level, I've received a 4.0. Van Belle's online class is by far the worst experience of my life! He is condescending and lazy, and will also turn around and attack you if you ever try to address his inconsistencies. He grades based on personal preferences and tastes.
Did not like this teacher at all. Online course. Never returned papers in time, which is vital for an online writing class. I wrote a final portfolio project with only 2 of my 4 papers turned in. Felt disorganized the entire class. Seems like he could be a good teacher but never performed.
I am loving Greg's class! He is fun and knowledgeable. His explanations make sense and he answers questions quickly and clearly. Great class!
AWSOME
Online fiction. This class was all about being forced by quota to reply to other students' discussion board topics. Greg might or might not check in on the class once a week to post a topic such as "what is your favorite word?" He favored the pompous psychos who would post endless topics and berate others. His grading was very delinquent too. Bleh.
After reading through the comments, I just want to add that he hasn't improved over the years. VERY uninvolved. One week left of class and only one story is graded. He doesn't answer emails either. I feel like I threw my money away. I could have read the book by myself and learned almost as much. Other students are frustrated too. Disappointing.
Great class. Lots of fun and you learn a lot. Taking it again!
I took Gregg's 100, 105, and 205 classes. One of the best teachers I have ever had. Yes he does expect a lot out of his students. But he is fair, and he does care. And best of all, he teaches people how to write! I consistantly get 3.5-3.9 on my research papers at the UW. So if you want to learn how to write an essay, take his class.
He hit on me and my friend when we went to ask for help. my grades started to go down after that.
Greg can be a frustrating teacher, only because he wants to pull the very best out of his students. Those who can't handle school without hand holding should drop his class. Otherwise, he is one of the finest instructors at Edmonds.
Great instructor, sarcastic and hilarious at times. If you do something stupid he'll call you out on it, if you have a fragile ego beware. He also won't hold your hand. As with any teacher, be attentive, do your work and you'll do fine. Tied with Sulewski for most charismatic instructor. Would probably win if he had an accent.
Online fiction writing class. Assigned two textbooks, only one of which was used. Was missing for most of the quarter. Only graded one out of three stories before the end of the quarter. Could have just read the textbook and learned about as much. Seems like he just phones it in during the summer.
Was not impressed. This also was an online only class during summer quarter 2010. He didn't monitor discussion boards and often would not return emails. He'd give the assignments but then we basically had to teach ourselves if we had questions. We only had two out of four quizzes. Last paper we wrote he never returned back to us graded.
VanBelle is unreasonable to the students he does not like.
I was scared to take a class from Van Belle because of the harsh comments, but this class was so easy. If anything, he gives out too many extensions for papers. If you aren't completely stupid, you'll do fine in this class. Yes, he is bad about grading. Also, we NEVER used the Hacker textbook. Even so, I enjoyed this class more than I expected to.
His bark is way worse than his bite. He tells stories about things that he has done to students in the past and seems to think he is much harsher than he really is. A relatively easy grader.
Greg is one of my favorite instructors. He really likes to challenge his students, so if you like to slack off he is not for you. Otherwise, you will get a lot out of a short class. He may take a long time to grade papers but he is VERY thorough in his critique. If you are serious about English, take Greg's classes.
AVOID this teacher at all cost! He is very flaky, missed 4 classes, only returned one assignment, never used books (that I paid over $150 for), didn't use blackboard, bad communication, and most of all...I never knew what my grade was in the class or how to improve because he never graded or returned papers on time to get his feedback. AVOID him!!
Easiest class ever!! I took his online class and I got an a+ with no effort :) Just pay attention to his announcement and guideline when writing your essay and you will be fine.
We read 4 books over Summer quarter. They were not all the best books, pretty tough to get some of them done in the short time- had 2 weeks to read and do all of the assignments. I love reading but this was definitely a difficult class.
Would never give full credit on any assignment. Values quantity over quality.
He is terrible and boring. Never checks assignments on time. Doesn't explain your mistakes
Van Belle did not participate in online discussions and gave literally no feedback until the final week of class. Easy A, but I would have learned just as much googling essay prompts.
He is great teacher ever!! such wonderful person. I learned a lot in his class. Nice person. I highly recommended him.
Very boring no inspiration at all to motivate you to keep going in this class he's not good at communicating and he only participates at the end of the course. Avoid him
Greg is an irresponsible teacher. He takes forever to answer an email. He does not give you good feedback. He posts his modules late, and expects you to finish them in time but he never posts them on time. I very much disliked taking this class with him.
Easy A, nothing too crazy. My only complaint was that I never knew how I did on ANY of my assignments until AFTER class was over. That was terrifying, I mean, what if I had been doing it wrong since the beginning? He never updates grades on time. So cross your fingers and hope you're doing it right, or you won't know until it's too late.
Absolutely avoid his online classes. I had straight As on every assignment before receiving a C with no feedback, and never receiving a grade on my final essay. Overall, he was barely involved in the class, and hasn't responded to my requests for an explanation for months.
While his class isn't hard per se, Greg won't review papers or weekly written posts until quarter's end, meaning you don't have any idea how you're doing until it's too late. He's also more interested in talking about himself than teaching: two of our assignments this quarter have been forum posts asking about his life. Not recommended.
He does not give feedback, usually will not post assignmentsfeedback by the time he promises, and is a little in love with himself.
He started the class out by requiring everyone to ask him a personal question about himself. He is very arrogant and little help to his students. Gives absolutely no feedback and disliked his teaching style very much. His instructions for assignments are extremely unclear and had many questions that he did not answer. Avoid him if you can!
Gave absolutely no feedback with any of my essays that he graded a B with. What is he getting paid to do? He hands out grades with no explanations or feedback. I learned nothing in his class and felt entirely on my own throughout the entire class. Terrible instructor. He mad as little effort as possible and it was perfectly clear to the students.
I took the online class and felt good about it until my papers were downgraded based on my style of writing. While everyone else was taking the easy road and all their papers sounded the same, he docked points on mine for writing in a "post modernist" style. My advice is to write the obvious paper for his prompts instead of being creative.
I took online class and it was awful. He does not give any feedback. He seems like he cares more about traveling around than his students.
he was literally the worst teacher ive ever had. he would make us submit the final draft to a discussion a week before submitting it as a final essay. he had a week to give us some feed back about our final drafts but we received nothing. i ended up just turning in my essay how it was. got a C with out any feed back
I don't know what this guy does. I have been out of school for 20 years and expected feedback or guidance - to which this teacher is absent. He takes forever to grade your work, so when you're trying to do your next paper, your first one isn't even graded, so you have no idea if you're going in the right direction. It is very frustrating. Avoid him
I have never taken a class like this one. I did not learn how to write and there was nothing.
The problem I have with this professor is he hides due dates within readings. Posted on canvas will be one due date and then you'll go and do you r readings and you'll find out it's actually due much sooner. If you're taking this guys class make sure you do your readings as soon as possible otherwise you'll be left with a surprise.
I had this professor for English 101. He gave zero imput on my essays. Not one comment, not one tip, not one improvement thought. If you give me 155 points out of 200 and don't even explain what I did wrong whats keeping me from making the same mistake in my next essay? Silly way of teaching if you ask me.
Hands down, hardest class I have ever taken. I'm sure Greg is a nice guy but I'm not sure if he really cares about his students' success or not. He gave bad grades without any constructive criticism, takes forever to grade other stuff and gave zero explanation for assignments. He needs to change his way of teaching ASAP. Don't take him for now.
This was the worst class I have ever taken at EDCC, the professor is very unclear when giving feedback (If he decides to give any). I had a technical difficulty turning in final and Van Belle said it was fine and he would still grade it normal- he didn't. He gave me a zero and I got a 1.0 in the class. I'm a 4.0 student so this really hurt my GPA.
Van Belle can seem relaxed and laid back, but don't let that fool you. He seems to have a "chill" personality but he takes the work seriously. It is just like your average english class, some essays, lectures, the usual stuff. He has a sense of humor, i have also heard from other people he is very lazy, and i see it. he has missed days as well.
I really struggled with how long it took to get my essay grades back, every time it was over 2 weeks. also every essay we read was about death, broken relationships, or regret. negativity seeps from the essay choices.
Terrible instructor. Wastes much time talking about himself and his personal interests, spending little time on giving direction and/or feedback for assignments. Shows no interest in the success of his students and does not grade in a timely manner. Feels like flying blind.
Terrible teacher. He talks way too much about his personal life and he takes forever to grade assignments. Doesn't respond to emails in a timely manner. Lots of discussion posts that I doubt he even reads. Does not give feedback on story reports, so you don't know how you're doing on any of them so you know what you can improve in the future.
He is funny but don't let that fool you. He knows good writing from bad and will let you know when you suck. I liked his nonchalant tone about writing but his grading methods scare me. He goes MIA for days and then comes back saying we are not participating enough. Overall an okay English class I just wish he would be consistent and present online.
Took this class online and it was very disappointing. Greg had plenty of mandatory discussion boards which he did not participate in. He would go off the grid for days, sometimes over a week without hearing from him. You won't get grades on your previous work before your next assignment is due, or if you do, you only have a day or two. Frustrating.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had
I was incredibly disappointed with his course. I took this course as an incoming college student, hoping to expand my creative writing horizons. Unfortunately, his teaching method is small minded, unprofessional, and does not allow room for creativity in his creative writing course. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone interested in pursing writing.
the teacher does not teach to much but gives a lot of tests. his courses are hard to get a good grade
He is a good instructor, lots of homework though. Also, do NOT miss a day. As long as you write good papers, and participate then you will do really well. I ended with a 4.0 because I involved myself. He also respects other peoples views. He dope and a tuff cookie.
Greg is a great teacher. He will work with you if something comes up. He actually cares if you improve. If you don't get something just ask, he'll help you. Assignments are tough but you can get an A. Just remember for story drafts less is more. He even answers general writing and publishing questions. I've taken 2 of his classes so far. Fun class.
Professor James Greg Van Belle is professional, keen and wants to teach you how to succeed. Greg's English class has a straightforward structure and is focused on writing the essays he will be grading you on. All of the material Greg presents in class is relevant to success in the class, the workload is reasonable and his lectures are engaging.
Great teacher, everything is cut and dry and responds to emails in a timely fashion. Would absolutely take another class of his.
He is very difficult to get in touch with concerning any questions regarding the subject material or with help on assignments. The one time I was able to touch base with him regarding an assignment he said he was travelling for a two week period during the quarter and didn't get back to me with feedback until just before the assignment was due.
Lazy and ineffective, can't teach, does not give feedback and very helpful.
James Greg Van Belle is a great teacher and obviously wants all of his students to succeed both in the class and beyond. His course is clear, concise, and straightforward. Although, he expects you to put an abundance of work into each assignment he gives. His class can be a little tough but is totally worth the work.
I've taken several of Mr. Van Belle's classes. If you are looking for an easy A or small workload this class isn't for you. HOWEVER, if you are aspiring to improve your work and create work you can be proud of then this IS the class for you. Yes, it's a lot of work but Greg Van Belle makes the work, I dare say, enjoyable
Greg was an amazing teacher and I would easily take this class again. There is a final 15 page paper, but the entire class is set up to help you prepare for it so writing it at the end is a breeze. Would recommend to take his class any day.
I took his writing fiction class and did love it. It is writing LITERARY FICTION so if you were expecting Genre fiction this is a slap in the face. He gave really great feedback though and cares about his students becoming better writers. But he doesn't really respond to his emails and is a tough grader but has really great lectures.
He cares about his students and wants them all to do well, but he's very high demanding of the quality of work. However the issue I had is that he said we would work on the project essay throughout the quarter, and would just be able to piece it to gather at the end; I ended up having to write the entire final essay in one week, very unprepared.
He says on his syllabus he doesnt accept late work but then he takes almost the whole quarter to grade half the work he assigned which was mostly busy work. He was understanding if you had a genuine reason though for turning in an assignment late and he was a fair grader.
It's not an English class, be prepared for that. If you want an English class choose a different teacher with a different outline. It's a fake sociology course designed around social justice issues and sports. (So, if sports isn't your thing, definitely do not do). The class is more about social justice. If that fits you, it'll be perfect!
He is a very good teacher, lecture wise. Yet not very good at communicating. He cancels his classes a lot for some reason. Nice man. Final paper said will build up over weeks, it does not. It is scramble to write 13 pages on sports, I do not like sports yet took the class not knowing that. My fault I guess. I will try again in summer.
Very disorganized canvas, impossible to find what materials go with what assignment, just a huge scavenger hunt each day to find out what you're supposed to turn in. Takes long to grade assignments. English is often my strongest class as an honors student, but this course drained me. Barely an English class, nothing but sports and social issues.
The short stories assigned were terrific. Almost all the assigned readings have become favorites of mine. Van Bell is sassy, sharp-tongued, and fair. He's also the slowest grader in the world, and his criticism will give you whiplash.
Pretty interesting, but killed my passion for creative writing for a while. I wouldn't suggest taking Van Belle's class if you want to have fun with writing, because his feedback is unclear and doesn't allow for a lot of creativity. I didn't feel like he really cared about improving my writing. Not to mention that he is super slow with grading.
Greg Van Belle was the worst English teachers at Edmonds I have seen. He was a big procrastinator who grades assignments at last point of his due date, and he was just lazy in class. He told us to buy 2 textbooks but never used them.
I had Van Belle before for my Eng 102 class where he made us buy expensive textbooks but never used them. For this online class, he was incredibly hard to get a hold of. He didn't grade over half of my assignments until after the quarter was over. His criticism was confusing and I had to make him clarify his suggestions.
This was the worse English class I have ever taken. I learned nothing. Greg Van Belle graded our essays without a rubric so he took off so many points for no reason. In office hours, I asked him about the things on my essay he took off 20 points for. He said he "felt" like it wasn't organized enough at the time, then slightly adjusted the points.
Do not take this class. There is a lot of hypocrisy in his teachings. At the start of the quarter, he lectured about sending professional emails and how he would not respond to students if their emails were not up to par, but his email responses were very rude and informal. He also would not show up to office hours during midterm week.
Worst class ever, some ratings say he is professional... are we talking about the same guy? Did not come to office hours, did not respond to emails, and slowest grader ever.
He is extremely awful. So much work and he will miss half your classes.
Do not take Van Belle if possible. His class was the most disorganized class I have ever taken. Super confusing, doesn't use rubrics, or any grading standard and he tends to flake during office hours and meetings a LOT. I learned nothing this quarter. If you do not have a strong English writing base, AVOID this class at all costs.
Takes forever to respond by email, very vague language and rude responses. Leaves you very confused about assignments and has a very disorganized canvas structure.
Grades too harshly. Gave zero grades for being "slightly" off the mark. Slightly off the mark does not justify a ZERO out of 100.
Avoid this class if you can - Van Belle's ENG101 is disorganized and confusing. Though I found Unstuck AI helpful for study prep, the grading lacks clarity. Pass on this one if you have another option.
Don't take Van Belle. He's so awful, so rude, disorganized and always flakes. The one time he showed up to office hours, he checked my essay and said it looked great but then graded it so poorly for no reason, even he said "it was missing a little something." What does that mean? So unclear and unfair. Even he doesn't know why he took off points.
horrible. don't take him.
I waited too long to drop this class because I thought things would get better. They didn't.
