This man is ignorant about all things philosophy. He over simplifies everything and does not respect his students. It took him over a month to return papers and missed a week of class. He will put you to sleep and should be avoided.
I turned in a paper over 2 months ago which counts for 20% of my final grade and I still haven't received any feedback. He puts me to sleep in his class and isn't very easy to follow because it seems as if he changes his mind on an issue while speaking. AVOID taking him if at all possible.
Please don't take him if you want to learn anything at all. just don't do it, please!
The readings in this class were good, especially if you are interested in Philosophy. He is a nice guy and smart, but you can tell he is very nervous about teaching. He takes a very long time to get things back, but I believe that may be based upon the fact that he used Blackboard for everything.
He is a nice guy, you can tell he really loves philosophy. It is true that he takes a while to return work, but he is easy on grading provided you do acceptable work. Anyone looking for an easy A/B should take this class. Final exams are also a breeze if you come to class and pay attention.
ppl r bein too hard on him. yeah he takes forever to grade papers, but hes super easy. take home final!!
i actually liked this class, though the lecture days could be a bit boring. he's very passionate about what he teaches, and the discussion days were great. don't buy the books - the readings can be found online. yeah, he takes awhile to get grading back, but he's easy and super-nice. i actually learned something here!
I liked this guy; he was smart, aranged his class in a very organized manner. Reading assignments were fun an interesting if you wanted to read them. Atending class was not necessary nor were reading assignments. four papers, some homework and a take home test. Easy class, though he made it fun an interesting if you wanted to particiapate.
he was boring, thats for sure, but he means well and knows what hes talking about. plus he wears awesome vests. he really tries to make it as understandable as possible, analogies abound. i got an A and probably could not have done so in any other philosophy class. papers are easy with notes from class.
Sure he is nice and all in kindof a professor way. But he is soo unclear and ambiguous. And he FLIES through the material so if you don't have a background in logic then you will probably be very lost before you know it. I am still praying i even pass the class.
Prof. Harrington is a very intelligent and fair professor. I learned alot about social and political philosophy in this class, and we only had to do 3 papers (it is usually 4 though) and a take home final. good class, easy.
Okay. So, Dr. Harrington is the biggest dork I've ever encountered in my life; however, he's the most helpful. He listens to you and is willing to help you with any problem you may face. Sometimes, he can run through material fast but if you just raise your hand and ask him to slow down, he will. He's really understanding. I recommend him!
goofy teacher..dont need to go to class, everything is online (except tests), everything you learn you can get straight from the textbook (more clear than him sometimes), have to study for his tests, he can go too fast and it is easy to get behind if you dont take the time to study on your own or go to his office hours (which really help), offers 5
On the bright side, when He answers e-mails that accuse him of being wrong when he is. The poor guy lacks any kind of confedence and bumbles around making all sorts of mistakes that leave him vulnerable. I mean, he probably should know the material he is teaching... His tests did not test the HW- everyone failed and he changed our grades to A's.
Pretty easy class. Take home midterm and final and 3 papers. Not too bad of a class. Harrington is a good guy. He has his own sense of humor, but all in all he's a good catch. Take him if you can.
Kinda bumbles about and says 'alright' 45 times per class, on average. However, he is clear and helpful, though slow at getting papers back (VERY slow). He grades fair, and actually I had to work pretty decently to get an A. But in the end, he is a very good professor whom students often brush off as a pushover. He knows his stuff and can teach.
Everything is done online, so do not take it if you are technologically incompetent. Online programs rarely work. He will answer emails and such, and just push dates back rather than explain the problems. Be prepared to rely on the book for everything, it makes more sense than he does and still is not very clear.
Great guy, fun to talk to one on one. Does take forever to return papers, but everything is online (including the tests) which makes things all that much easier. Everything is pretty straightforward, he will tell you what he expects and you have to do it. Not an easy A, but certainly not a hard one.
Really smart professor, very well read. Not a difficult class by any means, lectures could get a bit dry, but overall I'd recommend him.
Dr. Harrington is awesome. He is extremely intelligent and approachable. He is a little eccentric, but who isn't thats that smart? The topics can get a bit confusing because he loves to talk about physics with philosophy, but if you need help he loves to talk about things so go see him. Really nice, cares about teaching.
Gives all papers a B-. Unlimited rewrites, although he doesn't give you enough time for the last paper. Objective online midterm and final are open book and no time limit. Some questions are confusing and if you miss 2 questions your down to a B. Material is confusing and he is not too clear.Take this only if you need the triple dip(PHIL,THEO,WI)!
really good teacher, everything he uses is on blackboard which makes everything very easy. take him if you can.
He is a nice man and an okay teacher. The class is extremely boring. He takes a long time to return papers (don't expect anything back for at least 3 weeks). If you are unfamiliar with writing philosophy papers, meet with him to discuss your paper topic before writing the paper. The class is an easy B.
Hes an OK teacher. u MUST work pretty hard if u want to get an A. he gives ALL papers B-'s, so dont expect anything better. u can re-write some papers. all tests online! but their tricky questions, so work in groups! 93+ is an A. if you dont agree with him in papers you'll fail! he will take FOREVER to get papers back that its too late to rewrite them. if he offers extra credit you MUST go its 5% added on to final grade! thats what saved me
overall, easy class. attendance isn't mandatory, and both the final and midterm are open book, online and not timed. if you need help he is always more than willing, but the class is really really boring.
Oh, Harrington, light of my life. This professor is sweaty and giggly and goofy and funny and easy. He's SO MUCH SMARTER THAN YOU (and probably knows it but he's humble) so if you take his class he doesn't expect much from you. On the whole nice guy. Class is boring but if you can pay attention you will learn a lot, SMART guy.
Approachable, witty, clear. Good lectures, interesting, open to discussions and questions. Good books-I would never had read books like these before, can get them at Borders for example-do not buy at Bookstore (Luc, Beck's). Read the material-BB and books-then you'll do well both on exams and papers. A challenge sometimes but fun.
Very smart professor. Knows what he's talking about, but his lectures can get dry. A VERY hard grader on papers and even though he gives rewrites there's not usually enough time to do them over. If you can get the rewrite in, however, that can boost your grade. Midterm and final very easy. Read the material!
Easy A. I didn't work at all in this class. Highly recommended.
Actually a pretty cool class.. It was a bit too early for me so I had trouble staying awake sometimes, but Harrington knows his stuff. almost everything is done through blackboard so you don't really have to come to class, but his lectures are more interesting than the books I think, so I'd advise to show up at least a couple times a week.
As a teacher for freshman honors seminar (discussion), he's alright. He offers some good points and can answer questions decently, but hasn't learned how to lead a discussion class just yet. Has potential, but not the best option right now.
Worst person ever! Just talks in dull way in class. Always keeps you late. Very rude when grading papers makes it seem like we don't know anything. He thinks philosphy is the world and science majors are worth nothing. Thinks we are lazy but doesnt realize that we take other classes than this one. Only good thing was the online exams.
Really did not enjoy him. Besides for the awkward office visits where he talked more to his dog than to me, he was a really mean-spirited grader. He actually wrote on a paper "You're not a Renaissance genius, stop trying to write like one." Maybe I'm bitter, but he's incredibly useless when trying to actually understand the material. Avoid.
Not too bad. You only have to do 3 papers. The first offers 3 revisions and the final revision is due on the last day of class. I turned in everything late and still got full credit. Hdoes write rude comments but as long as you follow them he will boost your grade. Extremely easy class. Just make sure to at least skim the reading
Looks like an easy class on paper - take home midterm and final and unlimited rewrites of papers. If you think you can write, think again; he will simply annihilate your papers (didn't think it was possible to get 30 markdowns on a 3 page paper). However, he is very willing to make you a better writer. Overall an easy B, fairly difficult A.
Like all philosophy professors, Harrington goes on tangents and talks about things no one understands sometimes. But his papers aren't too bad granted that you do the readings and go into office hrs. He'll help you refine your topic. I've heard he can be rude but he was cool with me. Take if you want to improve your writing!
Rewrite, rewrite, and rewrite, then you'll be very close to an A. Be prepared to get a very low, like failing low grade on your papers the first time you write it. His comments can be upsetting but don't take it personally.Go to his office hour if you need help writing the papers. It helps A LOT.
This class is really confusing and heavily based on the readings. It's a lecture based class, but that doesn't always make the reading clear. There are two midterms and a final. They are essay and short answer based. He's a quirky guy and really likes to discuss the class. If you're willing to accept the challenge he's an interesting professor.
Dr. Harrington is a quirky guy, but I love his class. 130 is divided into two midterms and a final, as well as five journals made up of 4-7 entries each. Although it is probably my most difficult class, I absolutely love coming to it each day. He is funny (although I believe that to be unintentional), and his lectures are interesting. Take him!
This was my worst class. There are 2 midterms and a final with journal entries. He's really quirky. The class is lecture based on the reading, but it's still very difficult to understand the readings because he makes references that don't make sense.
Overall, he is a good professor. His essays are difficult, but he gives you infinite rewrites (to make you a better writer). Just talk to him during his office hours a day or two before the essay is due, fix the problems, and you're golden. I got A's on my essays. For the shy: participation and attendance is not mandatory. No speeches either! :)
Initially grades tough, but after rewrites, everything is on par with other discussion classes. Discussion/participation is not mandatory. If you love science and/or philosophy, this is the class to take!
This class was my most confusing and difficult class. for each midterm ( there are two) you write four essay and take a exam. he is very confusing and even more confusing when you ask for help. I would not recommend.
Harrington is a goofy guy; definitely one of the quirky professors at Loyola. However, he is also probably one of the most difficult. It's nearly impossible to get an A in his class, and his clarity on most assignments is nonexistent. He is a helpful professor though if you go to him in need of something. A challenging, unclear professor overall.
Would not recommend. Makes you write 4 , 500 word essays before each exam, and then only collects one Exams are written He gives you 8 passages/sentences from all the readings you've done and you have to identify the author, work, and significance Final is cumulative Lectures are completely useless He talks the entire time and makes zero sense.
A very awkward and quirky professor indeed. He is quite friendly, but a harsh grader and really likes participation in class discussions. For the honors kids, heads up he no longer offers rewrites on essays. Helpful when needed, but I (and others in my class) feel like his essay comments are extremely awkward and harsh.
Avoid him if you can. Lectures are long and confusing. There are 2 midterms which are difficult. He makes you write 4 essays and only grades 1 and in class gives you multiple passages to identify. He doesn't take into account that we are busy students and don' have time to do all this work in a single week.
Lots of reading, long and confusing lectures, 2 midterms, STAY AWAY
Lots of reading and be prepared to write! Allows as many rewrites as you can turn in to improve your grade which is awesome. Tests aren't bad. All around I'd recommend him if you're will to put the work in.
He is the strangest man. Every couple seconds he says "riiiiiiight" in a nasal voice and it's infuriating. During discussion there would be extremely long and uncomfortable pauses because there was nothing to say to his questions. Papers weren't horrible but you did have to work on them. Skipped discussion a lot, still did really well.
Harrington's class was a mess. He assigns a lot of work and reading, & tries his best to explain it, but I walked out of class more confused than when i went in. He does make an effort to help his students, and if you put in the work and have a basic understanding of the readings, you could easily get an A A-. But i would still stay away.
A very difficult, tough professor and boring lectures.
Overall a great professor, very clear on expectations. Allows for rewrites to improve grades and provides the feedback necessary to improve your grade. Helpful in office hours. The best philosophy teacher I've had here and I've taken a few as a philosophy major.
So here's the dealio on Dr. Harrington. 3-4 page papers, automatic 10/10 points participation. Sounds great, right? Well, if you're willing to trade ANY knowledge you might potentially gain from discussion and your sanity, go for it. He will help if you go to office hours, though. Don't expect to see him pointing out significant text quotes.
DO NOT TAKE! Awful at explaining in lecture. Often finishes a sentence with a really irritable "riiightt?!". Does not consider the fact that we have other classes to worry about. Piles on pointless readings that are hard to understand. Two Midterms, identifying quotes from readings (everyone fails). Along with 4 essay's of which he only grades 1.
I don't recommend this professor at all, you'd be better off with any other phill professor to be honest. His lectures very confusing and boring and you'll have a hard time paying attention. Awful at explaining and confuses you more when he tries to clarify. He has you right four 500 word essays for the midterms and he only grades one.
Truly one of the worst professors I've ever had, Harrington just rambles on and his exams are very difficult. He made the class way too hard for a core class and I had to work for an A. Avoid him at all costs!
Arguably the worst honors professor. Grades too hard, comments on papers are harsh and offensive at times. Discussions are incredibly dull and rarely leave you with anything of value about the text being discussed. Avoid if possible
Harrington is a god but takes his sweet time to ravage the area you call your ego and GPA. I never did well on a paper despite thinking I had writing skillz, but then again this man has a B.S. in Physics and a Ph.D in Philosophy so I mean compared to him you know nothing. I like him a lot and he's very insightful, but prepare to get utterly wrecked
not going to lie, I came into class with an open-mind, something you have to own up to in a philosophy class, but it has only been 3 weeks in the class. and I want to leave the class to go to the restroom and never come back. thank all the gods in the greek mythology world that it is only 50 minutes. survival tip: listen while you scroll twitter.
I wouldn't recommend taking this Professor unless you have a very high patience level. The lectures are very boring and too difficult to follow, he does not help break down the readings just makes them more complex. Beware of midterms you'll have to write 8 papers and he only grades 2! However he's pretty helpful during his office hours.
Just go to the next teacher available. His lectures are super hard to follow and you get homework every night. You have to write 4 papers for the exams and he only grades one. He doesn't give powerpoints and just talks the whole time.
Lecture heavy but not a good lecturer. Boring, rarely has a corresponding powerpoint to a lecture. Even then, the powerpoints don't provide any useful information. Two midterms, one final. Each midterm there are 4 essays he makes you write then randomly chooses one.
Very wise professor, interesting class but the tests are too much.
Dr. Harrington is very educated in this field. Most lectures would cover the major reading topics, which was helpful. Many papers of which you only have to turn in one, (annoying). 3 tests in total, blogs help your grade. Overall was a good professor but be prepared to do all the readings. Tests are pretty difficult overall. Somewhat easy grader.
Prof Harrington is a very sweet man, but this class is SO boring and SO much work. Only took this class because it was required and it felt like a major class. So many papers to write and lectures are so boring. You can pass without going to every class in my opinion. Nice guy, but I wouldn't take recommend him .
Professor Harrington is the worst professor I've ever had. Do not take him if you aren't thoroughly interested in philosophy and love sitting through long boring lectures. He assigns so much reading and so many papers and his tests are hard.
Do NOT take Phil130 with Harrington. He seems like a really nice guy, but he just makes the class way too demanding for a Tier 1 core class. Long and very complex readings are assigned for every class and his lectures do very little to explain anything. He gives two midterms and a final, along with 4 papers for each (he only grades one). AVOID.
2 midterm and a final. The final is worth the total points of both midterm combined. You have over 19 readings, each could be more than 20 pages, and you are expected to know it coming into class. The exams are even harder because you have to identify the author and title of the reading, plus philisophical meaning. Lecture does not go with reading
A really cool guy who is really knowledgeable on subject matter. The midterm tests are difficult. Passage identification plus papers. Each midterm is 4 papers and he only grades one. Sounds daunting but there are many easy points in the class and the grading scale is very generous
very tough test and essay grader. the exams demanded a lot of extra work meanwhile the lectures didn't help much with what we were tested on. however, attendance didn't affect my grade much
I will say Harrington is a nice guy, but his class is so much work!! He assigned a 25 page paper, in class exam with 5 take home essays all in the last 2 weeks of the semester. On top of that, his lectures were not understandable and dense. These are hard topics, he needs to be clearer. But I will say it is possible to get an A if you work for it
Dr. Harrington is a wonderful professor, the most enjoyable philosophy professor I have had at Loyola. The work, concepts are hard as hell, he expects a lot from his students, and he is a fairly hard grader. However, he is great to talk to in person and, in those conversations, engages you to test conceptual understanding.
Hes not the worst but hes not the best. I dont really get anything out of the discussions during class but you might. Most of the readings are online and he makes you write 4 papers for the midterms and chooses one to grade. There are two midterms btw. The final is not cumulative thank god
Readings for this class took me over an hour even though he said "this won't be like an English class where you're reading all the time." He didn't even explain most of the readings in depth during lectures. Exams consist of in-class passage ID's and four at-home essays. He only picks one to grade but it's randomized.
This guy is crazy smart. His class was transformative not in what it teaches you, but what it does to the way you think. I left Dr. Harrington's course with a fresh perspective and a crippling addiction to Spinoza. Would Recommend.
Dr. Harringotn is not an easy professor. He does assign a lot of reading and the midterm/final is based on these readings. His lectures do help you to understand the readings better. The material itself was difficult and this class can get boring. But some of the reviews on here are way too harsh about Dr. Harrington. I honestly learned a lot.
Professor Harrington is one of the best professor's I have ever had, he is clearly crazy smart and although a little quirky he's very approachable and he really seems to care about his students. You'll get out what you put in in this class, work hard and you'll do well and learn a lot. Overally I'd highly recommend him, thanks professor!
Professor Harrington is a nice guy, but he is an extremely tough grader. There were only a few opportunities for grades, and he did not put things in until the last minute. Because of this, if you got a bad grade on an assignment, it was impossible to do anything about it. I do not recommend taking him.
Great professor! Metaphysics was a very hard class, but completely worthwhile. Harrington does not shy away from the analytic stuff - I wish more professors would follow suit. I think a lot of people are reluctant to talk to him and express any difficulties they are having which is sad! He is really caring!
Harrington's classes are no joke and the topics are never easy, but I am learning so much every single week. With classes online this semester I was worried about feedback on forums. However, Harrington leaves the most intricate and helpful responses to posts and discussion questions and always get back to emails in a timely fashion.
He does not grade any assign, papers, etc. until the last minute. He also assigns numerous readings that are often difficult to comprehend.
Great guy, horrible teacher. Expects us to write three essays at a time (oh, and he assigns two midterms both 3 separate essays) while he hasn't graded a single thing since september. Gets off topic during the ONE class we have a week and assigns a heavy course load with little to not time to actually grasp the heavy concepts being thrown at us.
Literally the worst course I have ever taken in my life. Does not explain any of the material or teach and expects his students to write amazing essays. The semester is over and he has only graded 3 things, with NO FEEDBACK. Unless you are coming into the class already knowing philosophy it will be horrible. This class has made me hate philosophy.
Dr. Harringtons passion for philosophy shines throughout his lectures. Expect a hefty amount of weekly homework. The lectures/topics are dense and require thorough work. Being online made it difficult to completely grasp the lessons as we only met once a week. He's a nice guy but be prepared to work through things yourself.
A lot of homework that is repetitive and difficult.
If you have survived HONR 101, you know what you're getting yourself into. This course is difficult. Grading is even more strict than HONR 101. With that said, Prof. Harrington is fair and will mold you into an excellent thinker and writer. Take him up on his offer to go over your intro paragraphs! He appreciates students who use him as a resource.
Professor Harrington is a super nice guy. His grading can be kind of harsh, but not more than any of the other honors teachers. He is a funny guy and just wants to talk about everything. He does take a while to return paper grades but is otherwise a wonderful teacher and really cares about the students.
Took prof Harrington last semester. He knows his stuff but sometimes lectures get boring. Lots of reading and might seem a bit messy. He's very caring though, although takes time grading and giving papers back. Last semester he had complications during class which is why he gave things back very late, but he's very nice though.
Nice guy. Thats the only good thing about him. Terrible teacher- assigned 3 essays due in 1 week, then changed the requirements 2 days before the essays were due. Extremely unreasonable and unprofessional teacher. He makes sure to let all students know he knows more than you (condescendingly). Makes us memorize books and books of random quotes.
The worst teacher I have ever experienced in my life. I would beg anyone who signs up for him as part of a core requirement to get out of the class. Every day is a completely unhelpful, snail's-pace lecture that teaches you absolutely nothing. 100% of the learning is done outside of class. Unengaging, disappointing, made me loathe philosophy.
Was completely disorganized the entire semester. Assigned us a ridiculous amount of writing, and didn't even bother to grade half of it. Had to contact the department head to chastise him. In the end our entire grade was based on the final because he couldn't catch up on all the work that he had assigned throughout the semester.
