Strongly recommend other instructors if there is a choice. Tests are difficult. Never provides any review. Has tendency to get behind schedule in lectures and not cover revelent material.
Great teacher, not the most exciting but he really know what his stuff. Even though he doesn't give out a review,it isn't necessary. The primary aspect of the class is memorization,so studying notes works well.He also points out what is important on the test. He is no piece of cake but you will learn
He does tend to get behind schedule. He still doesn't give reviews. The tests are still difficult.
Worst teacher I have ever encountered. Should have listened to former students and dropped class.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He is very unclear and teachers like we the students have been in medical school for years. Does not give reveiws and the test are difficult and do not make sense. Uses no powerpoint or interactive material. Reccomend to take Bob Folkhart at CCBC-Dundalk
extremely hard
This guy is completely confusing. He tends to jump ahead of himself and get everyone lost. He enjoys pretending he is a microbiologist and all he has is m.s. in Bio. Recommended other professor if possible.
i had him for anatomy lab only but i found him to be very helpful. if you have any questioms he'll answer them for you and he was very thorough. not that exciting of a teacher and the labs tend to run longer then they have to but he really wants you to learn and understand everything.
He is a great instructor. Knows his stuff and wants students to learn it all as well. He is very accessible and answers questions until he's convinced you understand. His standards are high, but he is very clear about them from the beginning and helps students meet them, if they ask.
Failed his class by midterm. Taking A&P over this semester and after 6 quizzes I am currently holding a 100% average. Run if you can.
Extremely hard, I'd advise taking another teacher if possible. If not, don't bother buying the book tests are directly from his notes. Also plan on learning information his way, not the way presented in books!!!
He is very very very hard and knows his stuff. Don't even bother buying the book for this class, he doesn't use it as all. The tests are extremly hard with random questions that you would never think of. Other than that he is a nice guy who interacts well with students. Avoid the class if you can!!
Very difficult to understand because his style of teaching is all over the page. His test jump aroung and no study guide is given. I would not advise to take him for a class.
I had failed his class by midterm. No teaching style. Was all over the place. His tests are impossible. I just finished taking the class over (with R. Michael Anson at Dundalk) and recieved an "A". RUN!!!!! RUN!!! RUN from this teacher!!!!!!!!!
Hershey is incredibly smart and really knows his stuff. You have to be a really good and quick note taker in his class. All his tests are directly from his lecture, nothing else. Write down everything he talks about, study your notes, and you'll be fine. He's also very helpful; any questions you have will be happily answered by him.
Sexy guy! Intelligent and inadvertently funny. Listen hard.
He does not give out study guides, or review for the lecture exams. If you are a very disciplined person you will do fine in his class. However, he will not make it easy for you. His tests are only on what he covers in the lecture, so take copious notes. He does grade fairly on the tests though. I still do not recommend taking his class.
VERY difficult professor. No study guides, no lecture outlines and no reviews. His notes are VERY difficult to follow. I would suggest taking someone else if at all possible. Good guy, though, he wants you to learn the material and will answer questions.
Very good lab teacher - gives fair and clear practicals and will bend over backwards to help you understand - tests are very hard - taken from lecture notes - no reviews given and no study guides. His lecture style is somewhat confusing b/c he tends to jump around a lot - although he is always willing to help you...
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR!KNOWS HIS STUFF AND ALWAYS MORE THAN WILLING TO HELP. NO STUDY GUIDE, SO PAY CLOSE ATTENTION DURING LECTURE AND TAKE GOOD NOTES - ALL EXAM QUESTIONS WILL BE FROM WHAT WAS DISCUSSED IN CLASS - A VOICE RECORDER MIGHT BE HELPFUL TOO AND FINAL EXAM IS NOT ****ULATIVE. BE PREPARED FOR LAB PRACTICALS - STUDY, STUDY, STUDY. HAVE FUN!!!
I think his summer class is exceptionally difficult. His lab praticals are a little shocking. His test are fair but I wouldn't advice taking his summer classes. He is a little boring though so be warned. If you study hard for the first class, You might make it.
ABSOLTUE WORST!If you find out you have him my advice is for you to run find another teacher.Labs are terrible there's not enough time for you at the end of the exam to correct what you need.Wanna pass???DON"T take him you'll regret.
If you are trying to get into nursing school, take mr. hershey... I was so preprared when i got into nursing school. He's very hard, but you will learn a lot of valuable information
this was the most horrible teacher i have had for A&P
Look for a better option coz you'll most likely fail. The class is hard no exam review,as for the lab exam, NO extra time to fill out what you missed. You get One minute @ each station which can have up to 5 questions.JUST RUN DONT TAKE HIM.
Great Guy. He will help you and sit down with you to explain anyhting you don't get. Honestly, with all the studying I did for the class I still only got a B+. Not bad, but it was earned like crazy. You will find every inch of it diffidcult, but you will be ready for any other anatomy class you take.
His name's Mr Hershey he's not as sweet as candy and neither is his class a ride in the park!!!run and run fast or you'll be assured of a failing grade!I'd recommend Dr Anson in Dundalk campus.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR!! Extremely hard, but is very thorough. I received an A last spring and I worked my butt off to receive it!! Take him if you have interest in nursing school for you WILL be prepared!! He's a great instructor; he really enjoys what he teaches.
Mr Hershey was very helpful. If he knew the student was interested in learning he would go out of his way to help that student. His lecture exams are difficult, mostly because they are weighted heavily on up to page long examples that he expects to remember from lectures. If you receive a good grade in his class, you have definitely done your work.
Very challenging (especially for 106 class.) Lots of memorization of classifications. Labs go for the entire allotted time. Only take this class if you're actually interested in zoology, not just trying to get by with an easy bio course because it isn't easy at all!
the text book would be helpful for his class if he did not tell you everything in the text book was wrong. there are not exam reviews and not enough time to take the exams. He tends to ramble and go back and forth he does not cover the material well and does not answer students questions if you want to pass this class take another teacher
if anyone has the tests from his bio 230 class @ ccbcmd essex please contact me...i would like to get ahold of them to use as study materials because this teacher is really not good at all and his notes suck
by my last rating i totally mean Bio 220, not Bio 230
He is hard, but not unreasonably so. If you're taking Anatomy & Physiology for a difficult degree, you'll learn quite a lot. If going to medical school is not for you, look elsewhere. Remember: rights & lefts, complete book-style definitions, lots of memorization, know the material before the test because you'll have to write short essays quickly.
Mr. Hershey is a very intelligent man, however he is not suited for teaching. He constantly complained that the textbook was wrong, and that the lab models were not accurate. He is also not very helpful. I advise steering clear of his class. In all it was a horrible experience. He teaches the class as if everyone already knows everything.
Professor Hershey can be very helpful if you ask specific questions. He does not use the book, so take good notes and go to every class. The main key is to study!!
worst of the semster by far. made sure you knew useless facts. tests were difficult, and i am a good student who had already taken a zoology class before
Mr. Hershey is a great teacher, although his class is not for the average student. His lectures are extensive and very detailed. His class requires commitment and lots of studying in order to do well. Take Hershey only if you are serious about learning the subject. Skip his class if you're looking for an easy pass.
i was scared to take him after reading previous posts. now that i'm almost done my class with him, the truth is that he really isn't so bad. he isn't hard, the material is. his test are very fair, he expects you to know everything he talks about but in no way tries to trick you. if you learn what he talks about in lecture you will be good to go!
Professor Hershey is one of the worst Teachers I have every come across. He does not follow the book in anyway and expects students to understand information while he rambles on. He does not give reviews for exams, but does expect you to finish 6 pages of essay questions and multiple choice in an hour.
It's A&P, it's not going to be easy! But Mr. Hershey is VERY smart and VERY willing to help. There is no way to make the material easy. I appreciate that he learns your name, values his role as the professor and obviously loves Biology.
Mr. Hershey is a very hard, but it certainly doesn't make him a bad one! He's very knowledgeable and ready to answer any questions. It's a very interesting class and the labs are really cool!
A&PII is HARD! Hershey is helpful, tells u wat u need to know. Follows the book, & will break things down. Use a recorder to catch all details. Organize ur notes. Test is combination T/F, Essay, & multiple choice. Keep up with notes & study - u will pass, don't & you won't! I would take Hershey again for another BIO subject.
This class was AWFUL!!! His exams are primarily essay questions....... and he does not use the textbook!!! He lectures and writes on the white board....... NO POWERPOINTS! His essay questions come from his lectures.... go to class, take good notes, and good luck!!! Also, he is not very helpful....:(
A&P is the hardest class to pass! Mr. Hershey is fantastic! He is VERY knowledgable about the material & eager to help with questions. He tells you like it is...you must study to do well. Lab practicals were easier than exams, but still found they related closely to the material discussed in class. Sad he isn't teaching 221 :(.
He is an excellent Teacher who gives difficult exams, though his questions are all taken from the lectures.
I loved having him! anatomy is a hard class to begin with, but he is very knowledgeable and is very good at answering questions. There is no homework, but dont expect to space off in class and forget it all at home. to pass the class TAKE NOTES EXACTLY AS HE PUTS THEM ON THE BOARD AND REWRITE THEM LATER! if you dont understand them look in book
He is very pompous. He is angry that he never became a MD and therefore takes it out on all the students with prospectful medical aspirations. If you like anatomy do not take him, he will make you hate it!
He was horrible. I had a 3.5 gpa. I know I work hard in all my classes and failed his. He doesn't want to help you at all. I asked for help and all he said was to do better on my next exams. He doesn't give you any extra credit or reviews. His lab practicals are so hard. He teaches you stuff you don't need to know until 221. Horrible class!
From what I hear of other profs of AP at Essex, they use PowerPoints and the book and the Web. Mr. H. doesn't. I feel that is a loss. He's smart, but techno-dumb and fairly conceited. You might be happier w/ a different prof.
Hershey criticizes the text and enjoys pointing out what he considers "errors" so following and studying from the book isn't always advantageous. I didn't like his arrogance or his total lack of technology usage either.
i would only recommend him to a genius. the only thing he uses from the book are the pictures. he criticizes the book and makes his own "corrections". most of it does not match up so don't study from the book. there are three lecture tests and two lab practicals. that's it! he uses the old school projector, anti-technology. not very helpful.
Professional Hershey is an excellent professor. He is difficult and you will have to study, but all of the material is taken straight from his lectures. He doesn't use powepoint, but he is actually teaching not just reading off the slides. Downside the grades are based on 2 practicals and 3 lecture exams only, nothing else. He is very helpful.
Run, I love learning, he makes it horrible.Talk's bad about the text book, adds in words that you will never use in the medical world. He is really the worst teacher I have ever had.
Professor Hershey is the best I've had at CCBC. He expects students to take their work seriously and to be accountable for their learning (e.g. class is optional, but you should absolutely attend if you want to do well in his class). A&P is a tough subject, but Hershey knows it well and is very helpful if you have any questions.
Never take him for a class.. Ever. I had to retake Anatomy and found that I loved the class given the right teacher. He will not use the internet or power points. He makes you copy notes from his chalkboard like it's the 1800s?!
Worst teacher I have ever come across, I read previous students reviews and thought he really couldn't be that bad, I was right, he is worse!Class was painful to sit through as he never made anythng interesting or related it to anything else. You have three exams and 2 lab practicals, that's all. Avoid him like the plague
Excellent professor. I was a bit intimidated taking his course after reading the reviews but if you show up to class, take notes, & put in time at the open labs you should do well. After listening to classmates complain, I think they were just upset that they actually had to study & weren't spoon fed the information like they're used to.
Hershey is a very good guy. You must know how to listen to a lecture and take notes from it or be a very quick learner _bring a recorder_! He teaches you very good information so come to every class ready to learn coffee. Class is hard but the challenge come with the prize of actual knowledge afterward. Hershey teaches morethanhis course; virtue
Don't be fooled by naysayers: James Hershey is one of the best teachers at CCBC. The only requirements for an A in Mr. Hershey's classes are decent organizational and note-taking skills, independent review of lab and lecture materials, and attending classes. It's refreshing to have a professor who knows his subject and isn't afraid to teach it.
If you are just an average science student or if you have a busy schedule, I will advise you to find another professor. He is a very difficult guy. However, I must say that he knows the subject matter.
Without a doubt the worst teacher I've ever had. Man knows his stuff for sure, but teaches it in a backwards roundabout way that makes know sense what so ever. Lab practicals were ridiculous the class average was 50%.Exams where 90% essays, no study guides, or extra credit. If you want to repeat A+P then by all means take Hershey.
Mr. Hershey is awesome. He actually teaches! Good note taking is crucial. Recording lecture will improve your notes to study from for exams. No handouts, power points, or online assignments = less to worry about. He is very approachable if you have questions and is helpful in lab. He'll challenge you but you will learn so much in his class.
He is a nice teacher but his class is hard. he gives a lot of information out during lecture but has a tendency to jump from one topic to another. his test are also difficult and very specific in the information he wants. but he does give partial credit on test which can help
A&P 1 is hard and if you want to take the easy way out, don't take Hershey's class. But if you're not afraid to learn and do the work, then I highly recommend his class. He genuinely wants you to do well. Its easy to tell what essays will be on the exams (hint: pathways) and he will review anything you ask. I will be a better nurse for taking him.
The worst teacher ever!He does know biology very good but he is not made to teach it.No study guides or anything on BB at all. In exams he expects you to give so many details which you did not even know you have to write.Takes off half points for every little mistake.I am shocked! He also gives too much unneeded details. Terrible class and teacher
Not fair teacher! He makes sure you don't pass his class. No help, no explanations. He doesn't watch the time-every class he would hold us longer. Tests seem to be easy but in fact he will not give you good grades because whatever you will write is not what he wanted from you. Also he makes so many mistakes and then tells you oh I messed up.
While I really enjoyed this class, I feel that Mr. Hershey placed MANY trick questions on his exams or poorly worded questions. He also throws a lot of information at you and jumps from topic-to-topic; I walked away from many lectures scratching my head. TAKE AMAZING NOTES! You DO NOT need the textbook. His exams are straight from lecture notes.
Took summer class with him.. he helps in every way he can! Studying is the key to pass the class. Make sure you take good notes in the lecture!! You will do just fine.
He only grades the 3 lectures tests and the 2 lab practicals, doesn't teach anything in lab just makes you do the workbook pages and waits for you to ask questions. Lectures are sooooo boring, he is scattered all over the place and doesn't seem interested in you as an individual student. I wish i never taken his class.
Proffesor Hershey is by far one of my favorite professors. Not going to lie he is hard, but Anatomy and Physiology is just a hard class. If taking him for A&P 1 you will be more prepared than any other A&P 2 students, and will have mastered studying for A&P. Important to take detailed notes, and stay for you entire lab time to really get material.
Pros: Extremely knowledgeable in the subject. Cons: No practice tests, no learning objectives, no study guide, doesn't own a computer (only contact is during office hours or class), uploaded lectures are ONLY the textbook figures, lecture notes can be jumbled or oddly organized, and sometimes erases the notes he writes on the board too quickly.
He knows his stuff and can answer any question with ease. He explains everything so well. If you know the material, the tests are fine, but he'll make you work for your A. His lectures are interesting, I wanted to attend. His organization can sometimes be a bit off, but his helpfulness overcomes that. If you want to really learn anatomy, take him.
Professor Hershey gives long, rambling lectures with no clear outline and he often strays off topic. The textbook is useless, as he often said the material in it is incorrect. The exams consist of vaguely worded essay questions, which he grades extremely subjectively. This class is passable, but do not take it if your GPA is important to you.
He's very knowledgeable and ready to answer any questions. Nice person.
He explains everything so well. He is the beeeeeest for Anatomy Lab !!! I had Anatomy Physiology before, but the other professor was good for nothing, so I drop withdraw! believe me Mr Hershey knows everything and love to teach to step by step Cristal clear, but; you have to study as hardest as you can and make yourself ready for exams.
bestest teacher ever...
Would never take this teacher, hardest one I've ever had
not clear during lectures he is all over the place. does not give an opportunity to build your grade.
Super smart guy. Study your notes after every class because you have to know everything for exams. Video tape the lab models and study a lot and you will do well. I did not and I am suffering.
You don't need the textbook. Only what's said in lecture is on the exams. Study notes and memorize them. (A lot of steps? It's an essay question!) DON'T LEAVE ANYTHING BLANK, HE GIVES PARTIAL CREDIT. You only need the LAB MANUAL. Record him going over the models. Didn't study a term? He picked that one to ask for. THERE'S NO PAPER! Thank God.
Professor Hershey was tough but I feel prepared for next semester. Good office hours, super nice, really helpful.
he is sea of knowledge, you can ask him any bio question and he will have the answer to it.
Was not helpful enough in lab, could have taken better time to actually explain the models instead of expecting us to teach ourselves. Spent way too much time in lecture on action potential, and did not even have much of it on the tests. Grading was unfair and very particular. Lectures were boring and not helpful. Curriculum for the course is awful
Doctor Hershey may be the toughest professor I've ever had to rate. He. Is. Brilliant. He is also a pain in the butt because he gives ZERO extra credit. There are 2 lab exams and 3 lecture exams, if you mess up on one, you work your butt off for a passing grade because there are no second chances.
Hard grader and terrible in teaching. Take his class at your own risks. Can't advise anybody to take him
He took the time during our A&P lab to explain things from the lecture portion of our class, which was online. Very specific about what to study. Most of the time spent in the lab is independently studying the models, but he is more than willing to explain all of the models. Don't skip lab, you will be lost on his practicals.
This is the second class I have taken with Professor Hershey. Tip on how to pass his class: record during lectures & ask him to explain every model in lab (make sure you video his explanation). He is very specific and there is no extra credit. A lot of work goes into doing well in his class. You do NOT need the text at all, just go over lectures.
Yes,Hershey is tough, but you WILL know your stuff. No extra credit, graded only on 2 lab practicals, not multiple choice. Uses models and lab book. TIPS: We use our phones a lot; video record him going over models. Take pictures, go to open labs, touch the models. A lot of his stuff goes off models, not book!
Prof. Hershey KNOWS what he is talking about. I never worked so hard for a B before, but now that I'm getting an A in 221 I know it's worth it. He's really good at office hours and didn't get mad when I kept asking him the same thing. You only have a few grades but if you go to him it's the best.
He was not helpful in lecture or lab. He would spend the entirety of lecture going over a single PowerPoint slide and rush important information in during the last 5 minutes of class. His lecture was disjointed and disorganized. During lab I relied on google. Your entire grade is based on 3 tests & 2 practicals.
Dr Hershey is the best. I worked really hard for my grade this semester but feel so prepared for a&p2. Go to office hours every chance you get.
This professor is the worst. I wanted to go for RN but now I'm changing my major because he ruined my experience in A&P class. I started hating this course and now I'm afraid to take it again. He never watches timing, we would always ALWAYS stay extra time. No textbook use, no study guides, no info online. He said we have to record his lectures ..
Very tough teacher, but a nice guy. I gave him a 1 only for the purposes of nursing. If you need an A to get into nursing, it is impossible with him, even if you are the best in the class (the best in our class got a B). If you just want to learn, and don't care about a grade, this is your guy. Note he doesn't curve, even if the whole class fails.
I had him on lab and surely he made me work for it. Its not easy to pass his labs and i highly recommend you don't take him because he's interested in spelling errors not really what you know. He's very tough and he'll make you stay in lab up to the last minute. He doesn't give extra credits study guide. He's not bothered whether you fail or not
Professor Hershey is super hard but worth it. I came out of the class knowing I learned a ton of information. You HAVE to take detailed notes because he tests on what he teaches in class, not the book. But, I really enjoyed his class because he loved explaining things and was AWESOME in lab. He explains every model.
Whew chile, Dr. Hershey is going to make you work for that grade honey! He is not easy but Dr. Hershey is a great Professor and I got the privilege to take him as my lab instructor only. He explains all the models thoroughly and even allows you to record him while he explains to play back for later use. I even found him quite humorous at times!
If you want to have a bad lab prof. that throws you off on lab practicals this is your professor. I guarantee you won't pass his lab practicals. He has the attitude of ''forget about what you studied hard for, here's what is good to me and only ME. ''. He is a nice guy,but he needs to chill. The whole class fails his exams and he doesn't care!
Be ready to study A LOT. His tests are tricky but if you FULLY understand the concepts, you will pass. The labs are heavy. You must go over each model multiple times a week At home in order to retain it. Record the lectures and his rundown on the models in lab. Will be retaking next semester. Also he doesnt use blackboard. Offered a little EC
He is very old school. If you show up to EVERY class, take notes on EVERYTHING he says, and find a strong study buddy in the class you will do fine. The only grades come from 3 tests (one being the final) and 2 practicals. Each practical is a quarter of your grade so study hard! He does not give second chances easily.
I only had him for lab but he was one of the best lab professors at ccbc. there's only 2 Lab exams so they are hard and a lot of info to know, but the questions are straight forward. Other professors will ask you to identify and explain body parts, he just wants you to identify. Ask him lots of questions and go to open lab, make labeled pictures.
Tips for surviving Hershey lab: Bring lab top/phone/book to class. Look up models/objectives online. Ask him if its correct. Hell point out structures IF YOU ASK HIM. Videotape that. Take pics of models, print out and write in labels. Most of lab is spent on your own, make friends with desk neighbors and go to open lab. BEST Lab Prof at CCBC!
I think hes a great lab professor. He gives you terms and you have to memorize them, nothing conceptional about his lab practicles. You have to study in A&P, this is a "weeding out class" if you cant cut A&P then you cant handle any health program.
