I liked the class, everyone got A's and B's
he was interesting, and he had a lot of first hand knowledge about campaigning
I don't know about sexy, but the class was well worth it.
Immeasurably intelligent, and delivers it well. Tough class: know your stuff!
Very intelligent man, comes off cocky though. Tests are hard, but I got an A.
smart teacher, encourages learning, good class
Awful profossor! Extremley boring and unfair grader
BORING BORING BORING
Very smart with tons of firsthand knowledge, good class. Can use notes on test!
Good Class, Fun,
Great teacher. He expects you to read, and will call on you to answer questions
He's so great!

the way he grades is bad. you do projects and either you win or you loose. if you loose against another group you get a 0, yeah a zero, even if you did the work. he loves pop quizes too! oh yeah and he lectures 2 minutes past the time class ends
I hate this man
this is THE WORST prof i have ever had. i like to refer to him as 'professor ****'. he ignores you when you have questions. when he does call on you he doesn't answer them. he is never in his office hours. maybe he is good for 105, but he sucks for 320
Very intelligent man...has great examples, as he worked in Congress himself...uses many group exercises, which is good if you're into that sort of thing...tests tend to be too ambiguous...hired to be Dir. of Honors next fall, so it's all moot anyway.
He's a nice guy, knows his stuff...class doesnt get interesting until the last 3 or 4 weeks. Read the chapters, tests are kinda hard.
He is a very intelligent man, with obvious government experience. I'm not a big government buff so this class was challenging to me. Read the chapters carefully for the quizzes, he likes to be ambiguious. Pay attention in class! Group stuff sucks!
absolutely great teacher
HATE HIM. Never bothered to help me when going to office hours. Just sat there with a dissappointed look on his face, like I was stupid because I didnt know as much as him. SORRY. Never take him.
Hated every minute of this class. He was uncaring, and didn't lecture on what we needed to know. Tests were impossible. The best part of the semester was the last day of class.
The only reason people went to this class was because we had to. He cannot be tolerated, he acts like he's better than everyone...but just an FYI, he's not.
He's a decent person, but he's a horrible prof. He talks on and on about nothing and he won't ever let you out early, even if he's done with the material. He'll just tell stories and s*** to fill up time. He is conceited and pompous and I hate his class!!
Ayatollah Hill, the Sultan of the Honors Program. His lectures about law school are helpful, because we're all going to law school, of course...wait...He writes large, oversized checks for $224. P.S. Don't clap at the end of his lectures.
Take class over the summer, Easy if you put the effort into it. I got an A.
Snoozer! He lectured too long about rediculous stuff that no one cares about. He is very contradicting...
He's a horrible self absorbed teacher that only thinks about what will impove his reputation with President Rao
Hey, give Hill a break. The object of the course was just to get freshmen used to college. He didn't expect us to do much work, and the 4-year plan was very worthwhile. He talks alot, but isn't terribly boring. Hill's an alright guy.
This class is boring as all hell. Bring a gameboy, or a book, or homework, because it is just that boring. Only one assignment, but its worthwhile to do. But he is an absolutely great guy. Dont be afraid to join the honors program. Its not all that hard. In fact, its probably easier than others.
Wow, is he still talking?
Dr. Hill is awsome. The class was really easy and the 4 year plan rocked. It made choosing classes so easy. You have an army of advisors around to help you which is really cool. The honors program tells you what you need to do to get your degree in the period of time that you want to graduate.
I liked him a lot. He always helped whenever he could. Busy guy, but very appproachable and easy to talk to.

THIS CLASS IS THE DEVIL! Dr. Hill just lectures at us about random crap for an hour every Friday afternoon.
BORING all he does is lecture. the class is good cause we do a four year plan but the classes themselves are pointless bring playing cards, magazines, and notes to doodle on!!
The only thing good about this class is the four-year-plan. Dr. Hill just lectures and is soooooooooo boring.
Stupid class. I hated this class not only because of the time slot (Friday afternoon) but because it was so boring and the assignments were horrible. I should have dropped out of the Honors Program at the beginning of the year so I wouldn't have to take this class.
Boring boring boring boring. He talks and talks and keeps on talking. A two-hour lecture on a Friday afternoon for 8 weeks straight. Mind-numbing and if it wasn't for the four-year plan (which is awesome, by the way) and priority registration, I'd be outta the honors program.
I HATE DR. HILL!!!! This is the most boring class in the world, and he takes it too seriously. If you are not getting money to be in the honors program, DROP OUT NOW!!!!
i hate this class more than anythin. he is borin, self-absorbed, and expects way too much for a stupid 1-credit class. i dont understand y every single assignment must be typed. its ridiculous. when u give me a worksheet, i'm gonna complete it on the sheet, not type it. only good thing is tht it's pass/fail. 4year plan rocks tho, but thts ken's doi
THIS MAN IS AN ARROGANT JERK! the class sucks, its boring, pointless, and doesnt help you at all. if you are in the honors prgm just to be in it, or just to get priority registration ITS NOT WORTH IT! given some honors classes are nice, but having to deal with this man sucks, im dropping out of the program
this is the biggest waste of my time and money. I have figured out the honors program is mostly a joke. it has its strong points, but i dont appreciate having him tell me my goals arent good enough. they would be better off having an "honors orientation session" on a saturday then making us take the class and paying for it.
Dr. Hill is an awesome guy, but the class is quite boring. However, the 4-year academic plan is AMAZING!! The class does help spread your awareness of the campus and things offered here at CMU. And obviously this class is required for honors students. But it's cred/no cred, so it's really easy. Just do the assignments and you're golden.
Definetly not the easiest class, but Mr. Hill makes things interesting. He uses real world examples that students can relate too. Take notes, understand graphs, and you should do fine. Attendence is not mandatory but EC is given at the end.
Even the times I woke up to actually give my opinion in this class, he would try to steamroll me and tell me my opinion was invalid, just as he would to everyone else. Bad guy...extremely arrogant.
Economics of a professional sports team was definitely one of the most interesting and fun classes I ever had. Hill presents the material so good and keeps you interested. The tests and quizes are tough, but the projects - even though thye take forever - are easy and boost your grade up. Gives you test questions before the test - great professor.
the class really was not that important, and since we only met once a week, we never got much done. He often seemed to brush aside other people's viewpoints when they disagreed with him.
Great teacher, does powerpoint presentations and has fill in the blank notes on BB, very nice. Drops lowest exam and quiz grade. Has old quizzes and exams on BB for study material. Also give points for attending class. Hard material but he makes it enjoyable, real world examples, makes jokes, wants the best for his students.
Horrible professor. Arrogant and frustrating, even if I did do well in the class. Avoid him.
It is a difficult class but he makes it very interesting and emphasizes testable material. He looks like a mean guy but he's as nice as can be and funny as hell.
hes a really nice guy and helps the students alot
Very difficult class for me. Professor Hill was willing to take his time to help me with the things that I did not understand. If you are going to take this class take it seriously.
Great teacher, its a really hard class for a lot of people but he works with students to get them to succeed as long as they put the time in. He lets you drop a quiz score and exam score and gives you 30 EC points if you only miss one class. Very funny and intelligent guy, I highly recommend him
This is a hard subject bottom line and this guy knows it. He understands that micro is complicated and tries to get the students interested enough to care. Go to class and take extensive notes. Study hard if you're in his class, read the book and graph the material. Tests tend to be hard but quizzes can be harder. He's a good guy if you try.
James Hill was a professor that I truly felt gave me a lot of grief.I tried my hardest to understand his course and get a hold of him and he was unwilling to help me. I lucky just passed due to him using a curve avoid taking this class with this professor.
I really didnt like the way that this professor taught his knowledge level was very high and for a 105 course which requires a minimum knowledge on the topic. He wasnt helpful and he wasnt prepared.
I wasn't a fan of the way Professor Hill conducted class. He is one of those professors who is really passionate about his subject and assumes you will understand the intricacies of it because he understands it. With no extensive prior knowledge of politics, I found this class hard to follow and relatively uninteresting. I wouldn't recommend.
Dr. Hill is a great teacher. He keeps lectures interesting by using real life examples. Super funny too. He drops your lowest quiz and test grades. The book doesn't help much but review the notes to do well on the tests and quizzes. Quizzes are usually harder than tests. I highly recommend taking this class with him.
He's a great guy, very nice and really funny. He uses a lot of real world examples, which helps a ton. This class in general is hard and you have to take notes and study in order to get a good grade in this class. He does allow you to drop your lowest quiz score and lowest test score, plus he gives 30 e.c points for going to class.
I enjoyed James Hill during this class. He is a funny guy and is passionate about what he is teaching. The material was hard but he had pre-made slides where you just have to fill in a couple blanks on them. He gives 30 extra points if you attend every class, which is huge since there are only 3 project type things and 3 exams for the course.
Dr. Hill is a great professor but this class is really hard. 50pt quizzes once every two weeks and 4 exams. No homework. If you do bad you're pretty much screwed. Quizzes are very hard and tests even harder. Not the best at explaining questions.
I went home and cried every day after this class. He ruined my GPA and I have never done worse in a class in my entire life. Do not take him he is so confusing and pretty mean.
Professor Hill is a very difficult professor. His quizzes are very difficult much like his exams. He is always available to help students during office hours. Dont bother buying the textbook i never used mine. Attendance is mandatory and will not give you the bonus points at the end of the semester if you miss more than 2 or 3 classes.
Dr. Hill is very intelligent, and this class in particular was geared to be somewhat theoretical. He taught it very well, challenged his students in a constructive way, and he's very passionate about the subject. I wish I would have taken him before my senior year because I would go out of my way to take more of his classes.
Dr. Hill is the reason I wake up on TR
Dr. Hill is a great professor. His lectures are very interesting and he really gets you thinking. Make sure to go to class and take notes. There are a few opportunities for extra credit. Overall, it's a very interesting class. Dr. Hill is very helpful and is wants to inspire his students to get involved in government.
Dr. Hill is definitely one of my favorite professors at CMU. In PSC classes he plays devils advocate, and stays almost completely bipartisan. He cares more about you learning and making you think than just a grade. He grades kind of tough but there is almost no homework & no tests, if you get your work done you should get a good grade in the class
Professor Hill did a great job of not just teaching the basics about government and politics, but also making students think about current issues. The tests are difficult, but if you study you will do well. He also gives several opportunities for extra credit. Be ready for group papers and debates. Also be prepared to think outside the box!
Such a hard class. He has a quiz almost every class period worth 50 points and only 5 questions. They killed my grade. And the exams are even worse. Good luck if you get stuck with him. I would avoid at all costs. He does know a lot about the subject just does not get it across very well.
I really enjoyed his class. U had to print out notes & they were fill in the blanks and he would do examples in class. 8 quizzes and 4 exams. You can drop your 1 quiz and 1 exam OR 3 quizzes. People said this class was hard, but all u have to do is study the practice quizzes & exams he puts online. 30 free EC pts if you only missed 1 class
Dr. Hill is extremely knowledgeable and knows a ton about his subject. He expects you to also know a lot and his class includes a lot of group discussion--even if you're wrong, though, he won't make you feel bad about it. He also offers a ton of extra credit!
Dr. Hill is an excellent teacher. He gives great examples and explains the material well. He gives a lot of quizzes, but he puts up old quizzes on Blackboard that are similar to the quiz he gives in class. This is not an easy A, but if you study for the quizzes and exams you will do well. He also gives 30 bonus points if you only miss 1 class.
Bad teacher this class was really hard. I strongly urge people to run the other way bad prof. !!!
He is slightly condescending, a lot of ppl don't like him, but he does tell you what you need to know. If you pay attention, take notes, read, and get help elsewhere you should be good. He also gives 30 pts extra credit for going to every class, so if you have a bad grade, go. He also drops 3 quizzes or 1 quiz and 1 test.
James hill is not a very great teacher. NOTES ARE EVERYTHING. Make sure that you take goo notes off of his power points otherwise you will not pass. Exams are very hard. When you ask a question its like he gets offended and mad that you don't understand. 30 pts. of EC for attendance saved my grade.
He treats this class as if its a 300 to 400 level course. He is very liberal, and if you disagree with him, it will reflect it in your grade. Was thrown out of class four times for stumping him in political discussion. The words intro class mean nothing to him. Nice guy, but then again not so much
guy is a jerk. F%$^ his class and him. As a political science major, he is the only teacher who ruined my grade. I transferred to cmu as a junior and had to take my intro class again, and he made me do my thesis in that class for my graduation, instead of the simple 15 page paper you usually have to do. mine was 48....
Professor Hill is extremely intelligent and grades on a curve. This was the hardest class I ever had seeing that I had a lot going on and it requires a tremendous amount of reading as well as a lot of knowledge to retain. Great lectures, discussion board topics, and overall fair in terms of grading.
He is a great professor. I read some of the reviews, and they are really not accurate. He is a bit of a tough grader, but is really helpful if you ask!
Dr. Hill is awesome! Nice guy to get to know. Yes his classes are difficult, but with proper studying with other students and visiting his office hours, earning an A is possible. Gives extra credit for attending all classes.
Dr. Hill was very challenging. It seemed like if you didn't know the material he didn't take you seriously. Although he is a great guy, funny, and connects the material well, the work load was very heavy and if you don't study you're done for. Test are tough. He does give attendance bonus point for extra credit and was very knowledgeable .
Prof Hill is a great guy. His lectures can be a little dry at times but he uses a lot of personal experiences he's had as examples, and applies concepts to the real world. He does crack a TON of jokes. You do have to come to class to pass. And sometimes he does randomly put people in the hot seat, but besides that he is a great professor!
Professor Hill is a great professor. Microeconomics is a hard subject to learn but he does a great job at teaching it. Giving many examples in real life to help you learn. 30 points extra credit for going to class and drops 3 quizzes. Gives all old exams and quizzes online, use these to help study.
I love Dr. Hill! He really knows what he is talking about when it comes to economics and sports. It sucks that the class is at 8am but he gives you extra credit points if you only miss two classes. Going to lectures and printing out the notes he puts online is super important. STUDY and you will do well on the exams.
ECO203 is the hardest class I've taken. Get a tutor if you start to struggle within the first week. Study hard for the quizzes and exams, and you should pass. All notes are done in class, so go to it. He is a funny guy, but not the best at teaching the subject, which is weird because he's been doing it for years. Don't get discouraged.
ECO203 is a hard class to begin with not to mention even harder as James Hill as your professor. His lectures are him talking about stuff that doesn't even relate to the topic. He gets off topic all the time. His notes are terrible he makes you print them out and some are 23 pages long..... His notes aren't helpful at all for the exams.
He will talk all hour about stories and it's so hard not to use your phone because no one cares what he is talking about. His quizzes and exams are hard but we won't ever re make them and is okay with a failing average of 60% and lower :) His notes aren't even helpful basically have to teach yourself!! rip if you have him.
I enjoyed Professor Hill's class so much that I've signed up for another! He is a GREAT teacher! I learned SO MUCH! I think having an interest in the subject matter up front is really important to success in the class, because if you're not interested, and don't at least follow the news, I imagine it will be hard to follow.
Professor Hill wasn't a terrible professor, he just got off topic very frequently. First day of class he told students the average grade was a "C" The material is difficult but he did not do the best teaching it. However, I was grateful that he posted old quizzes with answers which were exactly like our quizzes.
Very nice and easy going. Its as easy as going to class and you receive enough extra credit to bump you up a half a grade. Gives practices quizzes and exams that show you exactly what area to practice.
James Hill was a very good professor, his lectures were always interesting and overall I enjoyed going to his class. He gives 8 quizzes and gives old versions for review which is very helpful. However, his exams are very difficult, even with all the review materials he supplies. I think Econ is just a tough subject for most people though.
He was very knowledgeable in the subject and obviously loved it, but in my opinion he then thought everyone should like the subject and understand it easily. He likes to act welcoming, but I found him intimidating. I went to an office hour and he made me feel dumb because he thought it was so easy/simple. I was nervous to ask any more questions
Great guy, very well spoken. Very tough class though. Grade is based off 8-50 point quizzes and 4-100 point tests. He drops 3 quizzes or a test and a quiz for you though. If you always show up you will get a nearly 5% grade boost. Gives plenty of review material. I really liked him, but the course, not so much.
Professor Hill was a nice guy, but his class consisted of only exams and quizzes which were graded by a grading assistant who was not always very forgiving.
He is super sarcastic but knows his stuff. Final grade is based on quizzes and exams. 4 exams and 8 quizzes. He drops the lowest quiz score and lowest exam score. No homework in this class.
Clearly written papers graded harshly and he expects more than the instructions ask.
James Hill will have you LAUGHING at all times. He relates material to real-life scenarios making the content understandable. You can tell he cares about his students, offers 30 extra credit points if you attend every class and takes a few quizzes and tests off your final grade. Clear expectations, only wants his students to succeed
Dr. Hill is wacky and funny but the material is hard to understand if you don't like economics. Im pretty sure the lectures haven't been changed since 2002 and the quizes/exams are hard even after studying. He was entertaining during lecture but it's up to the students to make sure they know the material. Don't take him if you struggle with Econ.
Hill is probably the best professor I'be had here at CMU! Easy! His lectures aren't boring by any stretch of the imagination, he relates the class topics to real life scenarios, making it even more interesting, i never skipped a class the entire semester, plus you get 30 points extra credit for showing up, how is there not a mile long waitlist!? :)
Dr. Hill is a nice guy & likes to joke a lot but I struggled a lot in that class. Hardest I've ever worked to get a C. He gives extra credit if you miss 3 classes or less. Very passionate about econ but youtube helped me understand econ more than most lectures. Tests and quizzes are hard even after studying. Very organized. Drops some lowest scores
Dr. Hill does not make the class super easy, he wants you to work hard. He's a super nice and funny guy so lectures are not that bad to sit through. he gives you old quizzes to study off of and gives you 30 extra credit points for not missing a class. The class is tough, but if you put in the work you can easily get an A.
He was a good prof but very boring material. It is VERY lecture heavy. The only points in the class are attendance, quizzes, and exams. He gives you 30 extra credit points if you don't miss much class and takes away your lowest exam or two lowest quiz scores to get you a good grade. Hard class but as long as he sees you putting in effort he'll help
