Love - Love - Love!! He was wonderful. He made sure we all knew what we were learning even if he had to show us several different ways and spend more time than he planned. He was very open and very helpful. He made a relatively boring subject really interesting and fun.
Professor was funny and made topic understandable. Problem was he was unclear on grading techniques. I got an A, but it was a hold your breath until the end. Also, be prepared for vegetative state lectures, as he seems to be on a kick with this. Otherwise, good teacher.
I love this professor! He has a delightfully sarcastic sense of humor, and he makes the topics in class interesting. It is a bit of a mystery how he grades work, at least until the end. Fortunately he isn't too tough with grading. I would take a class from him again.
This guy is awesome, I have no idea how he grades. But I'm sure we will find out in the end.
Professor Hitt explains things well during lectures which makes the topics understandable. The main downside to him is he takes forever to get your grades back to you and his grading scale is unclear. Overall, a pretty good instructor.
Good teacher. Lectures were interesting but sometimes confusing. His grading scale was very unclear. But he was a funny professor and had a leisure class style.
You have 1 test, a couple papers and 1 group project. he is a hard grader. He's very technical. I felt like i was attending a seminar everyday. Decent guy not mean or rude, just decent. Doesnt help out the students, hard to email. Eats every group alive on the group project (good luck). i wouldn't take him again..=[
Good teacher who knows a lot about the topics. The group project is nuts. 20 minutes followed by being torn apart by his comments afterwards. He doesn't have a clear grading process ether.
Dr. Hitt was a very interesting man to say the least. He's very goofy and has a great sense of humor. The class was somewhat difficult but Dr. Hitt explained things pretty clear except when it comes to the assignments he was pretty vague in order to get our own thinking going. Learned quite a bit.
Very hard to get a hold of. He doesn't reply to emails. However, I really liked his class. He made things interesting! He does rip apart your group presentations. His quizes are based off the chapters so be sure to read and you'll do fine! The reading are not horribly long either!
I am unsure about other philosophy courses, but Professor Hitt taught Honors 192 well. He grades by GPA throughout the semester and assigns a letter grade at the end. He takes very long to grade but provides extremely constructive feedback. He knows his stuff and is also an interesting, funny man. I would recommend taking him.
Hitt was a horrible excuse for a professor! His attitude is aweful, he rarely returns grades despite constant reminders, and his grading system makes no sense! The course grade is based off of quizzes, 2 papers and a group presentation. The group work was terrible and he shows no sympathy in who he assigns you with. I depise both him and his class!
He is a very funny guy and I'm sure he would be fun to be around outside of class. Although, as a professor I don't enjoy his class at all. How he grades is frustrating and unhelpful. You never know what your grade is. He quizzes you on difficult material before teaching you and most of your grade is based off those quizzes. Wouldn't take again.
Interesting class, but it was very confusing. Grading scale is confusing and no way to tell what your grade is. He isn't much help on the projects, but he grades easy on them. The papers are confusing and he isn't much help. If you don't have to take this class I would advise you not to.
He is a funny guy, but other than that I didn't enjoy this class. His grading scale was confusing, and didn't know my grade at all during the semester because it takes him forever to grade things. He was not very organized and never had any set class plans. I would not take this class again.
Only had him for half of the semester. However, I really enjoyed the class. It was scary at first because of the ideas/concept he threw at you, but eventually things began to make sense. Reading outside of class is a must, quizzes over material. Seminars are super fun, but participation's required for points.
Hitt explained really tough ideas, and at times it was confusing. I only had him half the semester, but I really enjoyed his class. If you go see him, he will work with you and help you figure out how to get a good grade. He's very open to contact and quite funny in class. Great prof and deserves better rates than this.
Hitt's lectures are great and he really gets the class involved in them. The quizzes are really hard and are not on what the lecture is about at all. We never opened the book once in class but that is what the quizzes are on. The two papers you have to write are also in Chicago Style. Overall a very hard class, would not recommend taking it.
The class has been the most influential, well taught class I've had since I've been in college. The class is difficult but worth it. You won't meet a more knowledgeable professor on this topic. He's got a great way of making your brain hurt.
His teaching techniques are effective but he is tough grader. I took his class this semester and not sure what grade I will get. If you want an interesting class go for it.
Tough grader, and very confusing on his grading policy. Philosophy is not an easy class and Professor Hitt does not make it easier to understand. I would not recommend him if youre not a philosophy major.
He is very passionate about this subject and if you take him for this course you will notice what I am saying. Yes, this class was the hardest classes I've taken of my 4 years of college. The readings are mandatory, yes he will quiz you on them and the quizzes are super hard. If you plan on passing this class by doing the bare minimum; you won't.
Professor Hitt is a nice and very funny guy. He keeps his lectures interesting. Hes very approachable. His lectures were sometimes hard to follow and his grading scale can be confusing. He doesnt post grades on canvas either. Quizzes are difficult, but as long as you do good on your papers and final presentation, youll do just fine
Professor Hitt is willing to meet in office hours at any time and give advice on how to improve your papers or presentations - take the opportunity. Grades are never posted on Canvas so you either have to estimate them yourself or ask him during office hours. Takes awhile to grade things, but overall a decent professor.
Professor Hitt is so helpful over e-mail and willing to meet during office hours to answer any of your questions. This course is challenging online and there are 4 papers. His instructions and feedback are very confusing; I have to read what he says over and over again to understand it.
This was the worst class I have ever taken at SVSU. The lectures did not correspond with any of the assingments whatsoever and were a waste or time. Professor Hitt even acknowledges there is no point in attending the lectures. There are discussions based on documentaries never addresssed in class or in quizzes or papers, just for busy work.
He is a good teacher if you are going into the health profession. He targets the class for those majoring in the topic. He tries to make lectures interesting. Tests are a little difficult but there needs a lot of extra credit.
There was a quiz due ever week and when there wasn't a quiz there was a discussion board, and if there wasn't a discussion board there was a paper due. The lectures don't correspond with anything that the papers are really on, I never went twice a week, and the times I did go we did some discussion for extra credit, and the professors kinda creepy
Hes hard to like at first, but he is one of the better professors Ive had. Very kind and funny. Not a tough grader on papers and discussions, if you do them and put effort in youll do just fine. The online quizzes are very hard, read the chapter and find a quizlet before taking it and you should do ok. The class itself is very easy.
Online quizzes are the hardest. Read the book, it is enjoyable. Dr. Hitt surprised me with how middle of the road and even conservative he was as a philosophy prof from NY. He wants you to think, do this and you'll be fine. He is really engaging and funny. Learn Chicago Style citations.
By far the least engaged professor I have had at SVSU. He only cares about himself and how he is a New Yorker. The content you learn in class is useless and does not coordinate to what you are quizzed on each week. He doesn't even know what the quizzes are about or when they are due. AND you do not even go over the quizzes or the book at all.
One of the worst professors I have ever had at SVSU. Goes over the assignment instructions AFTER they are due. Does not respond to any email and when he does they are short and not helpful at all. Doesn't have a clue about what any of the assignments are about. Thinks he is better than anyone else just because he is from NY. Horrible Professor!!
Professor Hitt's lectures for this class did not go together with the quizzes at all. However, you do need the book because that's what the quizzes go off of. His quizzes were the hardest I have ever taken, he does give a little extra points here and there though. He is very funny and usually nice. His grading with essays is very specific.
Do not take this prof!!! He is extremely disrespectful and takes forever to respond to emails... if he even responds. His lectures are a waste of time and doesn't go over assignments. He is very arrogant and everything that is for a grade has nothing to do with in person content. Grades all assignments SUPER LATE so don't expect to know your grade.
Professor Hitt is a nice professor, but, with that being said, the class was an experience. 90% of the assignments haven't been graded, and it is 2 weeks before semester ends. Extremely specific with written assignments, and the quizzes were rough. Would post assignments and not explain them, or wait until last minute. Do not take this class!
The semester ends in one week and I haven't gotten any assignment after January 31st graded. I have no idea how I'm doing in this class, many times assignments were simply never uploaded or put up very late. Lectures are interesting, but don't correlate well to assignments. I just want my assignments graded...
Most unorganized professor I ever had. Never saw my grade once and never explained the grading criteria. Although there were very few assignments, you won't know how you did on them. His lectures are VERY long and confusing. All he does is reiterate information from the textbook. Not good at communicating outside of class. However, he is nice.
Hitt's reviews had me apprehensive, but he's not too bad at all! We had discussion boards that were intriguing & some papers to write that required research, but you're graded on a few things really. His quizzes are very hard. Read the text, you'll fail otherwise. I liked the class but beware, he's a SUPER slow grader. Overall a good prof!
Did an online summer class, it wasn't too bad really. A decent professor but SVSU really should force profs. to grade within a time frame. We had 4papers to write, & all 4, I repeat, all 4 were graded two days before the semester ended. I really didn't have a clue how I was doing - I could've been failing for all I knew. Really the only negative.
I took PHIL 205 in person and quite honestly this is a hard class. There is no instruction or guidance on any of the assignments, and the weekly quizzes have nothing to do with the lecture. The lectures are confusing and when you ask questions you leave more confused then when you started. Be prepared to not get an email back.
The class wasn't horrible but I wouldn't take it again. Prof Hitt seems like a great guy but his class is confusing. The quizzes are mostly irrelevant to the lecture and very difficult. He takes a super long time to grade so I had no clue if I was on the right track, which was stressful. The papers aren't long but the concepts are challenging.
I don't know why his ratings are so poor. I thought Professor Hitt was awesome. Yes, his quizzes are very tough. Just show up to class and make sure to read the chapters closely. I thought he was really funny and I can leave this class knowing I learned things.
he is a really good person and is funny but his grading is really hard. we have weekly quizzes and discussions, and then 3 papers. hes quizzes are very hard, he even told us he wouldnt wanna take them. the dicussions are easy but can be time consuming at times. papers are hard but doable.
Not terrible at all! Weekly quizzes are hard (read text you'll do fine, online + open everything), weekly discussions (do them + get credit), 2 short papers, + one final paper graded a little harder. Lectures never coincided with quizzes + discussions in order. Genuinely caring + provides good feedback. Also he's funny!! Reminds me of Dr. House MD.
I'm not sure why his reviews are low. He was a great professor. Quizzes are not difficult, do the required reading and the quizzes are straightforward. He gives great feedback on papers and will answer all questions. Attendance was low toward the end of the semester hence why some people are complaining about grades. Go to class and you'll get an A
Worst professor at SVSU. He waits until the last day of finals week to start grading papers from MONTHS ago, that he says you should use feedback from to write your final paper. The lack of care that professor Hitt has is astronomical. Do anything you can to avoid his class.
Not a terrible class at all. For students of his wondering, he claims in the syllabus that if you miss 2 or more class periods it will negatively affect your grade, I skipped over half of the class periods (I literally was never there for a full week) and it didn't count against me. That being said, some xc is only offered in class. Good/funny guy!
This guy is the best type of professor in my opinion. He's very straightforward and blunt and never beats around the bush. He will call you out if you give him a stupid answer, which is refreshing. Really interesting and funny guy.
James Hitt puts a smile on my face everyday. I love his lectures, but they don't relate to any of our quizzes or assignments. His quizzes are hard and it feels impossible to get a 100% on them, he does curve them and have extra credit opportunities. Most of his assignments do not make any sense but he does not grade hard unless it's for a paper.
I loved having DrHitt, he was very go with the flow for our Honors class. He used mainly discussions posts and then a few big projects for grades, he was super fun and meeting with him was super helpful for his papers.
His lectures do not correlate much to the quizzes but he is for sure a jokester. You can always ask questions and though his quizzes are online they are very difficult, but extra credit is given often. There are three papers that tend to be tedious, but they are relatively short. He is funny guy and tells good stories.
I loved this professor, he made it enjoyable to come to class. PHIL is a hard concept but he explains things well. Difficult weekly quizzes based off of the textbook. I would read the assigned pages and still get 50% on quizzes so I stopped trying and still ended the class with an A
Just two things were disappointing: a lack of grading or clear directions on assignments. We had weekly discussion posts, yet only two were graded. Deadlines on larger assignments were also subject to change and there were no real rubrics for said assignments, so without being in class to hear what was expected, it would be difficult to complete.
Professor Hitt's lectures do not line up with anything. The lectures did not cover what we were doing in class, and it just made me more confused about what I was doing. They were so pointless to the point I stopped going. Takes forever to grade work, it's the last week of class and very few things are graded.
This professor is awful! He wrote the textbook and it is terrible. I have emailed him multiple times to no avail, he never responds. He also hasn't graded anything in weeks so i have no idea where I stand in this class. Minimal guidance on assignments and zero feedback since there has been no grading done.
This professor NEVER responds to emails. Without having a face-to-face class, it makes it incredibly difficult to stay on top of material if you have a question. He does not provide any lecture. It is all book and quizzes. He does not grade anything until the end of the semester so you don't know if you are doing things correctly or not. Awful.
doesn't communicate, grades work very very late.
I would never take this professor again, it was an online summer class. He made me buy an $80 online textbook that was full of typos and errors but we needed it to track activities for credit and had all of our assignments. He didn't answer emails. He is very quiz, essay, and discussion post heavy. He is very ambiguous and unclear.
quizzes were pretty difficult, and it is on material only in book. attending lectures were useless because no assignments related to what he talked about but still took attendance. grades discussions fairly hard as well. gives a couple chances for extra credit but overall, the class was not fun. no midterm or final just a final paper.
Not as bad as some of the other reviews make it seem. Yes, he's a slow grader, lectures are irrelevant, and his book kinda sucks. But, the class wasn't bad. Lectures were laidback, funny, and discussion-based. Quizzes weren't bad if you did the reading and took notes. The rest was pretty typical for a class.
Straight up he doesn't reply to emails and grades super slow. Didn't start grading things from October until December. Lectures don't really help and he just talks. Chill guy tho but not the best teacher.
The class averages for his quizzes was never over a C. The class lectures are pointless and have nothing to do with the assigned chapters in the online book. The textbook is online and he wrote it himself. It is full of typos and the activities in the book are just busy work and a waste of time.
I would never recommend Professor Hitt to someone. I ended with a B which is fine, but he is extremely rude. He mentioned killing people in our class, told people how to hurt themselves, and a number of other things. It's the last day of the semester and still no grades in except for what was due in September. Grades make no sense, avoid!
If you are taking this class with him, I advise y'all to get the textbook now. Mine and a lot of other people's didnt come in until the middle of the semester, which is needed for every single quiz you take. Attendance is mandatory, but quizzes have absolutely NOTHING in relation to quiz material, so don't even bother taking notes.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE. Both the class and the professor are the WORST that I've experienced at SVSU. Prof Hitt is extremely unorganized, very vague when it comes to directions, and doesn't grade assignments in a timely manner. His textbook is filled with misspellings. I have learned very little from taking this course, total waste of time and money 0/5
Quizzes mostly off reading. Says some random crap but its super funny. BE READY for the final paper. Its 7 pages minimum and he gives you the guide for it the last class you have before exams. Do the extra credit discussion and look at the files that describe the final paper and try to start writing it or researching early.
All the quizzes come from the book so be aware of that. He was funny I guess but wouldn't take him again. He grades everything at the end of the semester, he will never answer your emails until the next day or two. The lectures are alright but all I can say is good luck. Pick another elective if you are going into the medical field.
Prof Hitt was tough but fair. This class was definitely difficult, but if you put in the work and study outside of class, you will get a good grade. His lectures were always entertaining and amazing, and he expected class participation. We had to do group work pretty often, but it was always fun, and sometimes for extra credit.
Dr. Hitt openly brags about how hard his quizzes are and the test scores reflect that. He will also explain how the lectures will not be tested on, so the only point of going is attendance. Papers and written responses have the most confusing directions. Although the quizzes are hard, the amount of homework he gives you raises your grade.
- Quizzes were difficult & short, felt I could never study for them - Assignments in calendar wrong, displaying them as one assignment when it's 2 that are due on different days - Very few helpful resources & unclear rubric for the final paper, you should reach out about 2 weeks in advance with questions - Replies ~1 day, helpfulness varies, nice
Assignments from Hitts' book are pointless. Beware that it is just if you complete the assignments or not (no points given). Listen to how he wants the paper written, but don't ask too many questions as it will confuse you more. He gives extra credit though which is nice. His tests were AWFUL! He pulls random things from the book. Take someone else
Do not take James if you can. It takes him weeks to grade assignments so you never know your grade. Quizzes are unclear and made specifically to make you fail. He even states that he wouldn't want to take his quizzes as a student, which is insane. Has no compassion for any student and is extremely rude. Please take this advice!
Fun/engaging lectures. KNOW TEXTBOOK for exams which are tough. Has embedded writing/research assignments in text- are pass/fail so do them. Exams =25% of grade. Has big final paper at end which is difficult 30%. Must know APA citations. Has discussions throughout semester too 35%. Be prepared to work hard and you'll be fine though.
He started the semester by bragging about everyone failing his quizzes. They are nearly impossible and you have a better shot of guessing randomly and doing better than if you studied. He talks about controversial topics and takes forever to grade assignments. He has a superiority complex for sure. Do not recommend!
Starts class bragging about how hard it is and says he wouldn't take his own quizzes. Takes forever to grade. Lectures are off-topic and include weird jokes about killing students. Quizzes are from his own book and make no sense. Final paper is 7+ pages, explained last minute. Weekly discussion posts. Only went to class for attendance. AVOID
Brags about how hard the class is and says he wouldn't take his own quizzes. Lectures are off-topic and include jokes about killing students. Quizzes are from his book and make no sense. Takes forever to grade. Final paper is 7 plus pages, barely explained. Weekly posts. If attendance didn't count, I wouldn't have gone. Avoid this class.
Grades will be put in weeks after. Attendance is mandatory but what you learn in class doesn't correlate with actual grades. Good luck on quiz
Dr. Hitt's quizzes were definitely hard, so he curves all of them. 2 part discussion posts almost every week. Final paper is 30% of grade which I wish he went over a bit more. I would seriously recommend going to all classes because this will help your grade. He is not as bad as people say, but you really need to put effort into this class.
You need to show up for class even though it's a waste of time and you teach yo
The assignments were ok, but there was a lot and he took FOREVER to grade. It took the whole semester for him to grade the first quiz, and he still hasn't finished and grades were due a week ago. He also tries hard to push his political ideas in his lectures and through his assignments. Students couldn't express their own opinions on ideas.
Did an online class. He barely graded discussion posts and did not grade ANY quizzes until the last week of class, so there was no way to course-correct. You have to buy the textbook he wrote, which has a lot of typos and bad spacing. Quiz questions were often confusing because of grammatical errors that made what was being asked unclear.
Dr. Hitt waited until after class was over to grade every single quiz and assignment. I am a straight A student and received multiple Cs, Ds, and Fs on his quizzes after spending multiple hours on about 10 questions. However, since he waited until after class was over to grade, I had no clue how bad I was doing.Grading system makes no sense at all.
The quizzes are hard, but I put in enough time and effort on the rest of the homework that I managed to pass the class with a high B. If this class isn't required for your major, don't take it. Not worth it, it's a pain. I think for healthcare majors, it's a good and important class that makes you think! But I did not enjoy the way he taught it.
Told us at the beginning of the semester that attendance counts towards your grade, but when he finally grades stuff at the end of the year attendance is 0% of your grade. He won't grade anything until the week before finals, and if you ask him about putting grades in he still won't. Don't take this class unless you really need it.
Attendance is mandatory but he says nothing he lectures on is included on the quizzes. 2 chapters+ a quiz every week. lectures can be engaging but he intentionally makes the class harder than needed and the quizzes are terrible. final paper is worth 30%, 7 pages long. prepare to master APA. doesn't grade anything til last week of class. terrible.
Absolutely do not take this class. Says attendance is mandatory but has no guidelines on how it will effect your grade. On top of that, actually attending class is a complete waste of your time. He literally said that lectures do not follow with the book/quizzes. Also quizzes are awful. Average quiz grade is below a 50% according to Canvas.
Exactly how you'd imagine a health philosophy class to be. He is a nice guy and has cool lectures, but he clearly likes being "that" professor with unrealistic testing standards based on HIS textbook (which is not well-written or thought out). He's on a few boards. SVSU should be ashamed that this is a requirement: money-grab, for sure!
Lectures do not reflect anything on the quizzes, though you still have to show up because attendance is mandatory. The required textbook is poorly thought out and written, but all quizzes are based on it. Grades are not put in until the very last week of the semester, which makes it hard to know how you're doing in the class. Avoid if possible.
do not take this class for your gen ed credit take a different one. doesn't put in grades til the very end of the semester so you have no idea what you have. very difficult to have a conversation with always feels like your answer is wrong. lots of discussion posts which are worth a lot of points. quizzes don't rely what we learned in lecture.
The information was interesting, we just didn't learn half of it until after we already took the quiz for it. You are expected to know everything from the book, not much from the lectures are actually on the quizzes. You will probably get called on for in class conversations, he expects participation.
DO NOT TAKE!! He is very rude and always argues with students to make sure they are never right. This class taught me nothing. Goes over slides in class but quizzes are just based off the textbook. His tests averages are less than 60% and he says he would not take them if he was a student because they are so hard. He is proud of being a bad teacher
Lots of discussions, multiple parts. Doesn't grade work until last week of semester. Doesn't explain anything clearly, always on a tangent. Won't give any clear feedback. And he always has to be right. But if you just do the work you should manage a decent mark, it's just a lot of work.
