I was highly unsatisfied with this class and this professor. He did not teach an ounce of design; rather, the whole quarter was about design history. Actual design concepts-which was what this class was supposed to be about-were breezed over. Tests and lectures were purely about history. Also danced around class, bad jokes, BAD lecturer.

You either like him or hate him. I hated him. He did not teach design well; instead, he taught design history well. He's a curator and a historian. Thus he taught what he knew--not sure why they stuck him in a design class. He's also animated, but in a bad way. Danced around class, exaggerated, and goes off topic a lot. Waste of my time.

I've had Housefield for Des 1 and 144. He is very enthusiastic and dynamic, very passionate about design. However, he tends to jump around a lot on topics and it is a challenge to take notes in his class. But overall he seems pretty fair with his assignments, and grades. This class is a very broad design class that is taught in a way to inspire students to want to pursue design. It's less about the aesthetics/profit of design rather more about ethical design. The entire class is one big group project. Pray for good teammates or youre screwed for the whole project. You make a process book throughout the quarter which felt like busy work. He made lectures required even though they did not talk about the assignments or anything related to your grade. Housefield seems like a nice guy though.

Housefield was my first prof. at Davis. He is welcoming & cares a lot about his students. Each lecture felt personal as he shared life experiences to convey how principles he was teaching in the course related to real life. Course is interactive and easy to get an A if you participate! I chose other classes he taught based on his impact in DES 001

Generally unhelpful class - claims to be teaching modern design techniques but lectures lack substance. Feels like a gatekeep class for the major, but in all the worst ways - poorly managed project in which the TAs know nothing about what to do or how to do it, deliverables clearly meant for individual projects but forced into a group setting,

Eager for a preachy, egotistical professor who flaunts his teaching and accomplishments more than ACTUALLY teaching design? Enjoy mind-numbingly boring lectures? Look no further! Useless PowerPoints full of buzzwords. Disorganized and (ironically) poorly designed course and canvas setup. Class = 70 % common knowledge and 30 % preachy randomness.

Disorganized lectures and attendance is mandatory. No homework but there is one final project at the end of the quarter which he didn't clearly explain. He will say that the readings are necessary but they were barely ever discussed. Discussions were also mandatory but pointless to attend.

The course is poorly organized, professor posts dozens of readings/ videos to watch every week that are never discussed. Attendance is a large part of your grade but the lectures/ discussions are pointless. Class revolves around one final project that is poorly explained. I wish I could get a refund for all the money I spent on this worthless class

The professor is nice but he's unorganized. There is a reflection after each lecture, which is graded. There are lots of readings. You take lots of notes during lectures. The discussions feel useless. There is one final project which is creating a slide deck of an experience.

It was super easy, main project was making a slide deck analyzing an experience, like a museum or concert. Only problem I had was he kept insisting that we were gonna have tests & quizzes and we should be taking notes in class (on paper bc electronics not allowed) but then he never actually had them. So like it was stressful for nothing lol.

i learned absolutely nothing and his lectures are a mess. he tried to influence us as we were doing course evals. we were graded on participation and one project that takes like 2 hours to do. all quizzes were randomly canceled, and so was the group project. he was so unprepared that i'm shocked he got away with this as a class.

the reviews here are kind of harsh for how nice of a professor housefield is. His lectures are super engaging and he is extremely helpful. Even outside of class you can set up appointments if you can't make it to byom. He gives great advice and yes he can go on tangents sometimes but he truly cares about his students.

Housefield is a caring and nice professor. However, course was all over the place. Attendance was taken by doing reflections at the end of each lecture. Took a lot notes and said there would be quizzes but never actually did them. Only big project was to do a slide deck of an experience, overall easy course (not sure if itll be different next time)

compared to DES001, i think Housefield's expertise showed a lot better in this course. he is very caring and a funny guy. lectures could feel pretty long sometimes, but overall pretty engaging content. graded leniently, mostly discussion/participation based, with two exams and a few memorization quizzes. our TA naomi was also awesome!!

The lectures did not align with the material we had to do as a class. For an intro class, we barely learned anything that could help us prepare for design as a major. You're sort of expected just to do things on your own, which is like, alright in theory, but this is an intro class, and I barely learned anything.

DONT TAKE THIS CLASS if ur looking for an easy GE. i only took it bc its a required course but i slept thru EVERY SINGLE lecture. the only reason i went to class is bc the profs require u to draw at the beginning or end of class (sometimes both) for credit. Hes a nice guy but his lectures are so boring and barely teaches u anything about design.

Participated in DES 001 to explore possible pathway into design; He's definitly got some charming personality--Do attend Bring Your Own Mug events! Attendence is mandatory, and the lecture don't often link to the actual group project--which was graded by TAs, meaning if you got a great one you'll have a amazing quarter.

This is my fourth year and so far this has been the worst class I have taken at UC Davis. The entire class is basically a quarter long group project in which you get practically no guidance from the TA's since they dont even know what they're supposed to be doing either (assignments poorly written). Also incredibly tough grading. Avoid if you can.

Prof. Housefield is very passionate and cares about the subject and his students. Lectures were interesting, but could feel a bit long. Only one easy homework assignment. Grading is very easy on in-class writing on the exams. Study material for exams/quizzes were good. Make flashcards for quizzes and they're easy. Our TA Naomi was great!

Professor Housefield seems like a cool guy, genuinely, but lectures were so boring some days I was falling asleep. Lectures barely talk about anything that is super helpful in design or related to the projects. It's a super easy class, just very long and boring

He's very nice and enthusiastic. I only went to BYOM a couple times but it's a great way to connect with other design students. DES001 is basically one long group project that you have to iterate on, but it was graded pretty generously at the end. Attendance is mandatory but you don't need to pay that much attention to the lectures.

Although he's a great lecturer, that's about it. Most of what we learned was just words, no substance. The course was very poorly structured, with unclear assignment requirements and no clear mentoring. Our group's planned project kept changing until the last minute because the instructions for the project kept changing until the last minute. smh
