Great instructor who made learning mathematics as fun as could be. He is very energetic and is very knowledgeable. As a bonus, he is great eye candy!

Everything on board and explained
he is a great guy, makes class intresting, always around to help out.
Very energetic, and very serious about math. He is challenging, but its supposed to be.
He is a great professor, likes the Mariners, not a bad guy
Awsome professor! Very helpful and easy to approach. Explains everything thoroughly and questions are always welcome. Tests are very hard, but his teaching allows for a high level of difficulty. He obviously loves math and is enthusiastic about teaching it, which makes it so much more fun to learn. Best teacher I have ever had!
He likes to challenge his students to learn the material so they are ready for the material in the chapter. Excellent teacher. Highly recommened if you are serious about learning math!
Very good teacher, very clear and understanding. Also a awsome guy to talk to about sports or anything at all. He uses his own examples and rarely uses the book, which is great. One of the best teachers I have ever had
remindes me of mckay off of the sci-fi show Stargate, mostly in a good way. Very good teacher.
Dr. Howell likes to challenge his students to learn. He has high expectations of students. His lectures were fun, I learned alot in class. Exams are brutally hard, but he is quite fair. I recommend him, but be prepared to work.
Dr.Howell is probably one of the most intelligent men i've met, however, it shows through it his arrogance. If you don't understand material well you are screwed in his class. He gets irriated with too many questions asked and his tests are ridiculously hard. If you struggle with math, do NOT take his class.
If you do what your supposed to be doing like in every class you shouldn't have any problem.
Don tget caught off guard really hard class. But this teacher knows math inside and out. I learned alot and it was a great class
Dr. Howell is the most awesome math teacher I have ever had, he explains things very well. He is very energetic when he is teaching and you can really tell he loves math. He always answers students questions and really wants his students to understand the material. Math can be hard but Dr. Howell trys to put it in terms students can understand.
Explains things perfectly, really knows the stuff and is very enthusiastic about it. His test are HORRIBLE. They are too long and too hard! He almost never gets your assignments back to you on time (if it all) and you will never know where you stand grade wise. AND he shows up late to class every day. All that aside, I would recommend his classes.
Makes everything so clear by explaining the most simple method of solving items. Very honest about the difficulty level of the work, and makes sure that problems are solvable.
if you wanna coast, don't take his class. if you wanna learn, then he's the man. show up, do the recommended exercises, and study. his tests are challenging. make no mistake, they are hard. but do the assigned material & you should be fine. i highly recommend him if you're not a slacker.
Very good professor. He was easy to understand when learning new material. Keeps you engaged. He posts his previous quarter tests and quizzes to help study from. Like any class, make sure you do your work. He provides the tools, you just have to do the job. I failed cuz I didn't do my work- I look foward to retaking his class
This professor explains things better than any other math teacher. If you're a slacker he's not scared to talk back, but if you try hard in this class he is so helpful and nice. The tests are difficult, but he gives partial credit. He always uses his own examples on the board. Take the class if you are interested in math, otherwise avoid it.
The reason I'm now a math major. He clearly loves math and makes you enjoy learning the material, but has high expectations and his tests are difficult. Isn't afraid to call out students who don't take the class seriously. Probably not a good teacher for people who don't like math. Had him for almost every math class and I don't regret it.
I love math and still do. I just had him as a professor for math 141 for summer quarter 2009. He taught the subject, but at times went off topic, which was funny. He called me out once for doing Archaeology homework while in class and said "this student can go to the ST lab if they want to Archaeology." Kept me anonymous. I'd take his class again.
He's a nice teacher kind of has an attitude about him he acts tough but cares and is knowledgable he could use some help on his clothing though seems like he's always wearing the same baggy clothing all the time but he's fun to listen to and he talks to himself from time to time and swears a bit.
Great professor, wish they were all like him. Clear concise and helpful. Kinda Tough but completely fair, what else do you want.
MATH 144 is an extremely fast paced course with minimal in-class instruction. Dr. Howell does an excellent job making great use of in-class time to teach material clearly and constructively, and is ALWAYS available for his students. Great instructor for the motivated. Slackers will be called out.
He swears a lot and talks about numbers like they are people. Goes over simple problems but then puts tricky ones on tests. You won't do well if you aren't great at algebra and trig. Don't EVER miss class. Even as someone who is really good at math I struggled finishing the tests on time. However, he goes the distance to be available for help.
Howell... what can I say about him? He's hard, he's bald, but mostly, he's a great teacher. He has a no nonsense kind of behavior, so if you don't want to try then he won't want to help you. He really goes in depth, and I mean REALLY, but he wants you to understand so don't be afraid to ask questions. Take him if you want to understand math.
I took this class online so my interaction with him was limited. I'm not great at math but I did reasonably well considering the amount of effort I put in. Do the homework and you'll do ok. He was reasonable, fair, and accessible for questions / help.
Dr. Howell is not for the faint of heart. His tests are difficult and he expects his students to ask questions if they don't understand. However, he makes himself as available for questions as any professor I've seen, and he will answer any questions clearly, whether it's through an e-mail, by sending you a video he made illustrating the problem,
Dr. Howell is really good at what he does. I've seen few professors who want to help you as much as Howell. He is straight forward and to the point. However, his classes are fast paced. You cannot afford to cut class. He swears way too much. Get ready to take notes because he flies when he gets up to speed. I would defiantly recommend him.
Dr. Howell is one of the best professors I've had at Olympic. It's great to get some help when you need it rather than the cold shoulder. It is really awesome to see somebody who cares so much about what they do. I would definatly recommend him, hands down.
I really like this teacher, and really emulates what I like to see in a good teacher. He is approachable and answers questions, but does not hold the whole class behind for people who don't want to pay attention and work. Bad if you want an easy A, but awesome if you want to genuinely understand math.
Really enjoyed learning the more practical applications of math. Problems are creative and class is hilarious, lack of required homework makes math less tedious. Really great down to earth professor.
Not the best class, he puts questions on the tests that he doesnt go over in lectures or on homework. He just adds new material in tests. Very irritating. I wouldnt take a class from him unless you have to.
I enjoyed Dr.Howell class. He teaches very useful shortcuts. He also provides alot of extra material on his website, which useful for studying. He does go through material very fast, but he is very willing to answer questions. Great teacher I would recommend him to anyone.
Great teacher. Don't try to pull anything in his class, he WILL call you out. He is hard but worth the effort because he prepares you for future classes. He doesn't teach straight out of the book and really enforces the why and how so you are not just memorizing. His grading is very fair. I'd take him for any class he taught.
I very glad that he didn't require any book. and Once I met some trouble solve the problem in the TEST, he helped me also. Let take his class !!
He is a great teacher! I have had him for 3 courses, he is willing to take questions anytime and prompt with responding. I like that he challenges everyone, keep you on your toes. :)
Very helpful teacher who is nice, but isn't afraid to say what is on his mind. Can get distracted easily, but it doesn't affect the class. I would suggest taking him because he makes it easy.
Takes math to a higher level. He is very enthusiastic with what he teaches. Very thorough and has a website that has pre-recorded lectures to back up his own lectures and previous tests to review. Homework is extra-credit. To do well is attainable, but it's not a walk in the park. I detested math prior to taking his class and now not so much.
Mr. Howell is the man. Great lecutres, and actully tryies to get to know the class. Teaching style is very clear, but if you don't get it the first time, he'll try an come up with a different way to explain it. He's like a father you want want to make proud. Great teacher. Super difficult tests, not for the faint of heart.
Great Teacher! Shows students different ways on how to solve problems/equations..way better than what's on the textbook.
Love his style of teaching, but he does have new stuff on the tests not previously reviewed
Awesome teacher. Although class time was not long enough, His lectures were very clear, and also provides many examples. I look forward to taking his higher math classes.
Highly recommended
Dr Howell is THE BEST math teacher at OC, I am taking him in person now for 151 after a horrible experience in 151 before with Rowe. He is clear and regimented in how he talks about math problems, he keeps the attention of the class and he is energetic and enthusiastic about math. He makes you see how cool math can be. you can't read that in a book
Dr. Howell is great. He is very clear and understandable. He will gives good feed back to any questions. Take him if you like math.
Great teacher. Explains things well. Highly recommended.
Howell was the first and last professor I had at Olympic college. His love for math is profound, and his knowledge of the subject material made me feel more confident about my own math skills. His assignments are meant to make you think, but I did not ever feel pressured by his work. DiffEQ I/II have been my favorite classes thanks to Howell.
Very great teacher and explains the concepts very well. I would recommend him. I really enjoyed the classes. Tests are hard but you can do well on them if you work hard. Fantastic Professor!
Dr. Howell is the most helpful Math professor I have encountered. His lectures are clear and well thought out. He invites inquiries from the class and expands on concepts that are difficult to grasp. If I could, I would take his classes throughout my entire engineering course. Solid 10/10. You can not go wrong with Dr. Howell.
Dr. Howell is easily the best option you have for a math professor at Olympic College. He is incredibly organized and very passionate about the subject. His lectures are clear and concise, he also has online videos. He is also arguably one of the most accommodating professors you will find. You can ask questions freely and expect a good response.
One of the best math professors I've ever had. His lectures are very clear and he is willing to answer questions. He is also available for office hours and is good about emailing reminders for online quizzes. There is an online quiz every friday about the material learned that week. He is very passionate about teaching and is pretty funny.
I took two math classes in one wit him and he was so helpful. He will sit with you for however long you need to make sure you pass the classes you are in. He is funny and constantly cracks jokes in class. He makes math fun to learn and does group overviews where you cover the stuff that will be on the tests. Will take again!
Dr. Howell is an excellent professor. This is not a course you can get an easy A but if you are going to be taking a lot of higher level math classes, you want to build a strong foundation and truly understand the material. He provides this and is always happy to work with you. He is funny, kind and encouraging. Would absolutely take again.
Professor Howell is awesome. Gives great lectures and really helps you to understand what is going on. He cusses like a sailor, but that is fine by me. I actually find it entertaining. Others may be offput by it though.
He really cares about the class passing. He's a great teacher, just ask questions and he'll help you. He's a realist, and very understanding. He's hilarious and an AMAZING teacher!
Dr. Howell teaches the material in an easy to understand way. He allows the use of a calculator during tests, which was nice. My only complaint about Dr. Howell is that he grades tests, and written homework very slowly. It kind of leaves you hanging when you wan't to know how well your doing.
Although Prof. Howell is a kind person and means well: the tests are on-campus, with notes and books forbidden, and the tests are worth 56% of the cumulative grade. Read through the announcements, do not ignore them. The announcements are the only way that Prof. Howell introduces assignments, and they are EASY to miss.
Hands down best math teacher at OC. I had him for Calc I and recieved a 4.0 but I had to work my tail off for it. I went to lecture, did the homework, read the chapters beforehand. We used wolfram alpha and desmos to gain a deeper understanding so get ready to do some minor programming.
Dr. Howell is easily the best professor I have taken a class with at OC in the year that I have been attending. Awesome lectures, answers all (relevant) questions, super funny, really makes math interesting. Tests are hard but he is a fair grader and will curve if needs be. Take him any chance you get! Seriously!
Took Prof. Howell for Calc 3. In short, a great teacher. Clear lectures, readily available and willing to help you outside class. However, his tests were HARD and the some of the handouts were downright nasty. I logged a lot of hours in the study center for this class. Still, I'd take Howell again any day. Just beware the tests.
He is a great teacher. Beware, most of the stuff you have to teach yourself as he wants you to learn it before you attend his class. Do the homework and take your time on the quizzes. Tests are hard but he'll give you some credit just for trying. He has office hours where you can go and get help. Beware he uses profanity and is usually 10 min late.
Professor Howell was one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He was able to answer all of my questions (which I had a lot of) and help me understand math better. He did show up a few minutes late for nearly every morning class I attended. Attendance is not graded but highly recommended to pass the class.
I took Dr Howells online class and I really enjoyed it. Yes, I really liked a math class. I found his videos to be extremely helpful. He explains everything in such a clear way. He uses the words clearly & obviously all the time. I found that funny. Just beware that the online class has tons of homework.
Even though it was an online course, through his videos he managed to explain everything really well. In fact, all I needed were the videos. I never had to use an outside source for more information on a topic. I found it impressive that he was able to explain everything so well even though it was not a face to face class.
Lectures are very clear, and he's very helpful. Although the material can be challenging, he provides great instruction. Just make sure to do practice tests.
MAT265 was one of the worst I've taken. His videos did match up with the homework, nor did the examples from the textbook. I spent close to 15 hours a week in the tutoring center. The exams were hard, the first two reviews did help though. The worst thing about the class was Dr. Howell himself; doesn't respond to questions, or attempt to help.
Dr. Howell is an amazing teacher! He wants to make sure his students understand the material; he'll even go back and explain a concept again step-by-step. The IMATH course is very fast paced, and if you don't show up to every class session, then you may fall behind. There is quite a bit of homework, but it helps a lot in understanding the material.
if you show up every class then you will pass, ask him questions if you need. Easy to understand.
Mostly online, in-class exams. Textbook doesn't math online coursework, which doesn't match the test material. Didn't give me the correct email for the first 2/3 of the class so I wasn't able to ask questions. Didn't grade on time and didn't return graded papers until days before class was over when they would've helped with learning mistakes.
This class was challenging just because trig is hard to learn at home. The assignments were posted with 2 days to do them and the option to extend the due date was nice but if you get behind, its hard to play catch up. (I know) The tests are in person (my final was not because COVID 19) The professor will email back after some time and he is kind.
Took it online, was very fond of the YouTube lectures. Although I didn't like the online platform that was used, it was fairly easy to relate the video lectures with the content. Dr. Howell was always available with feedback and very clear with his videos. Lecture takes up alot of time so be ready. Overall very good
I'm not very good at math at this level but opted for online anyway. I would do it again. Howell's YouTube videos you watch as you complete a handout making it easy to follow along. I feel I had an upper hand over an in-person class because I could rewind the lecture. Howell was always available for questions. I would take a class with him again.
He was a little heavy handed with the homework, but I did learn it. Math professors that grade fairly, give good feedback, aren't nit-picky, and teach with due diligence will score high in my book. That's why he gets five stars.
Howell is a great teacher! He goes out of his way to explain things to each student if they don't understand something, and is truly caring for his students. He'll set special office hrs if you need. Be prepared for swearing during lecture. Both MULTIPLE CHOICE and FILL-IN TESTS; LOTS OF HOMEWORK; LEARN TO LOVE DESMOS! You'll pass, just do the hw!
I would say he is very knowledgeable about his subject. His ability to teach is improving but he is not as natural at it as other teachers. He is likeable enough and certainly not the worst teacher of mathematics at Olympic College but he is not the best. Some questions are vague but then he is very picky about your answers. Overall, he is alright.
Howell is definitely passionate in his field and cares more about a student learning the material than whatever their grade might end up being (pro and con in itself). He does a fantastic job as a teacher and provides excellent lectures which he splits up into short 5-15 minute long videos which is nice. Study hard for tests!!!
The lectures would either give perfect example problems of what you'll be working on, and also provide adequate information on what you need to do to succeed, or the lectures would have nothing to do with the material at all. So to put it simply the lectures ONLINE are a pretty hit or a miss sort of deal, I can't speak for in person though.
I took Doc Howell for Precal but most of the teachers use his videos in every upper level math. He explains things thoroughly and he puts a lot of effort into his videos. Taking his class, he isn't going to give away grades. I consider his response times and the quality of his responses to be high caliber. He has TONS of energy, which is important!
Great professor loves demos... uses WebAssign and hates it. pretty funny guy.
Very straight up and real. Is willing to help you become successful within the class. With that being said, there is a lot of homework and assignments, but is manageable. Overall, very good professor, especially with math being a subject I struggle with.
OFFICE HOURS! If you don't understand he is open to explain, felt comfortable asking questions. Exams and take-home exams are hard, make sure you understand the material well! Doesn't beat around the bush and is direct but wants his students to do well. Videos can be boring sometimes. Provides helpful fill in the blank lecture notes.
If you struggle with math, I highly suggest you not take other classes while taking this one. That being said, Howell is an AMAZING professor and gives you plenty of time, and chances to understand and get your homework in. Has videos for lectures, and is very fast at replying back to you. Also has print outs you can print and use for lectures.
Prof teaches OK, goes at a very speedy pace which sucks for learners like me who take their time. May out you every now and then when reviewing test answers a day after a big test but will keep you anonymous. VERY picky with answers, has a lot of typos in tests/hw. Prepare to show EVERY. SINGLE. STEP. of ur work. Cares ONLY abt small details
His explanations are very well done and easy to understand. The work load is pretty light, and the exams are fair. Overall, his teaching style was optimal for me.
Dr. Howell wants everyone to understand and love math as much as he does. He welcomes questions and expects participation during lectures. A lot of homework is necessary to understand all concepts and do well on exams. You won't do well if you don't put time and effort in, but for those who do, grading is more lenient. Make sure he gives work back!
He's really easy to get along with. Will help if you need it and you can see that he likes his subject.
Honestly my favorite professor so far! HIs lectures are very informational and he makes sure that you understand all concepts, and he even has lecture notes that he hands out at the start of most classes that are very helpful. If I had the chance would 100% take from him again.
Great professor, and teaches concepts in a way that's easy to understand (relatively) and is clearly passionate about the subject. Tough class with a lot of homework but this is to be expected given the course and material.
outstanding ability and knowledge of mathematics. knows what he is talking about. tough and very fast pace, cramming 141/99 into a quarter. If you have all the time in the day to study, sure you'll do great. He can be very engaging which helps learn, unless you're a zombie student. He can be distracted and make minor mistakes as were all human.
outstanding ability and knowledge of mathematics. knows what he is talking about. very fast pace, cramming 99 with 141 into a quarter. He can be very engaging which helps learn, unless you're a zombie student. He can be distracted and make minor mistakes as were all human.
Just an outstanding class. Prof Howell teaches math in a simple way to understand, and challenges his students to perform at their best capacity. Always available for one on one help.
Best math professor at OC
Prof. Howell is absolutely the best math instructor I've ever had. He explains things in a way that's very easy to understand, and can break things down in 100 different ways. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but I recommend going to every lecture you can. I had him for math 99, 141, and 151. I plan on getting him for Calc 3.
Pros: clear lectures, one extra credit option, caring professor, the work you put in is proportional to how well you do, regular quizzes, timely grading Cons: no practice problems outside of the extra cred which isn't graded, so unless you use office hours it is hard to know where you stand on the material until a test or quiz, requires effort
Most of my professors at Olympic College have been amazing, but my experience with Professor Howell...was disappointing. We had to buy a near $200 textbook that was barely used, and it was VERY hard to get help outside class. Emails went unanswered, office hours were unhelpful, and he's tough on grading. Be ready to study ahead of his schedule.
Overall, his lectures are really engaging and make the content very intuitive. He uses a variety of different examples to make sure that the core concepts are understood fully. He also gives partial credit on test questions as long as you are following the correct steps. Overall, he is a great math teacher, would highly recommenced.
I felt that the grades relied too much on quizzes and tests with not a lot of questions.
Prof Howell has a good personality. But this class is really difficult if you don't take the time to actually practice. He makes the HW problems optional (excluding problem sets). It's very difficult to do well on the tests from just doing the sets. Tests are harder than expected (swear i'm good at math)
A really good professor. Very honest and willing to help. He is obsessed with Desmos and Star Wars. Ask questions. Do the take home assignments and the extra credit. I did enjoy his class. May the Force be with you all!
Professor Howell is a fantastic math professor. Take the time to study the material and review the homework. His lectures are very fast, and I know some of the slower learners dropped him. He taught at the perfect speed for me, but everyone learns differently. Any practice sets are extra credit--do as much as you can! It makes a difference.
