sexy sexy man
i thought he was the worst teacher....i mean if you want to get some sleep and are having probs sleeping, this guy is like a sleeping pill...truly is hehe
*yawn*... so what did we learn today? uh.. i'm not sure! LOL!! nice sleep tho! my notebook is full of scribbles asking myself, "WHY AM I STILL IN THIS LECTURE?"... HOT? HAHAHAHAHA!
he's amazing! He made the Iliad soo cool! If I could have him for all my GRST classes I would!
Nice guy, but soooooooo boring. Wanted to kill myself duing every lecture. At least he marks easy.
Well, the course was easy... but he was sooooooo long-winded... and even though he lets you out really early everyday, he'll put you right to sleep...
One of my favorite classes. I loved his style and I loved his lectures. Heck, I even read some of the books on the reading list. Sadly, I didn't, um, read all of them in time for the final exam. Overall, I'd say he was charming. No wonder I had a crush.
class was somewhat boring but the material was interesting. it was a good place to fall asleep. he was hot tho

Such a charming prof. He gave amazing lectures, knew his stuff so well, and it was very clear what was expected of you. He was soothing and relaxing and very helpful. I loved his lectures so much. I reccomend him to EVERYONE!
This is the bait and switch of teaching. Everything is done by TA's and not good ones at that. The 1.5 hour classes are barely 50 minutes BUT theres a tutorial with a quiz(at the end) to make up for the time HE doesnt teach. Hate the tutorials beyond words. Feels like a scam to me.
best prof. i've ever had.
I was not a fan of his teaching style at first, but it has definitely grown on me. It's a very interesting class, and he really knows what he's talking about. A good prof.
well prepared lectures, course content good, good pp's-heavy note taking isn't required. If you don't like mythology don't take this course. The tutorials are such a waste of time. Some of the TA's are so good, the tutorials are ok if you have a discussion! Recommended overall if you like mythology.
Excellent instructor. Well spoken. Knows his stuff. Warning: Does have serious sex appeal and brilliance. Crushes could be imminent.
Great prof, lots of useful information, mostly pertinent to GRST students. Fun and non-stressful course and he just made learning easy and fun.
He is fine, except that every word he says makes me want to nap right there in the middle of tutorial. Ok, so bottom line is don't miss any of your classes or he hates you and wont answer your questions, and get lots of sleep before class!!!
Easy class. Jim Hume has an aristocratic quality that screams "classical studies." He is very engaging in a subdued way. Take a course with him. You won't regret it.
I've taken 6 courses taught by him, which is a testimony of how great his teaching style is. He is very articulate, but makes sometimes difficult lessons easy to learn. He's very passionate, helpful, understanding and always makes time for students. He's also easy on the eyes, which can sometimes be distracting!
Great prof. He's voice is so relaxing. A little too relaxing. I think I slept in all but 3 lectures, 2 of which i skipped.
Nice guy, made class interesting and unique. I would definitely take a course from him again.
Had him my 1st year, now I'm graduating and I still remember the influence he had on me! Loved him as a prof. Knows his stuff; Very fair marker but not that easy that you don't have to work. Picks good course material; You don't have to agree with his views in order to get a good mark as long as you prove your point and in English that's RARE!
I love this course.Class is like story time. You just go and sit down maybe curl up with some hot chocolate from Timmy Ho's and listen 2 ****ed/interesting stories in the most wise majestic manner than Penner presents them in.I suggest checking this course out 4 sure. There are no mid terms or finals just easy essay papers on stories.Easy and fun
He is so passionate about it and it makes the class so interesting. He knows so much and you will enjoy this class. The grades are basically all from essays- not hard but still takes effort. Also, he is SO easy on the eyes ;) Take a class with him!!!
Hume is a brilliant man, very good at his work. He's respectful of his students and open to all thoughts. He made my first year easier and more comfortable. I definitely recommend anyone take a class from him, he's very knowledgeable. Insightful, honest and kind. I never met such a kind man before him. He changed my life and I still learn from him.
Great prof, great to listen to. I found the papers a little tricky (And I'm a third year English major), but overall, a great class.
Excellent class. Basically, you go and have stories told to you. The papers were a little tricky, but the quizzes are easy marks. Very kind and interesting man.
Wow. This class was the easiest class that I have taken so far at the University. Easy quizzes, easy papers. Amazing! Dr. Hume was a excellent prof also, a bit boring at times, but still very nice and funny. Easiest A ever!
Great prof - my favourite class to date. He was easy to listen to and made it very easy to get a good grade in the course.
What can I say near perfection is hard to come by but Hume rocks brains, looks and humor. If you get a chance fight to get into his class. Watch for the thumbs and the tippy toes - he's very entertaining to watch.
I've never come across a prof as useless and lazy as Jim. His lectures are boring and his attitude and humour, and way or responding to questions is condescending. It is obvious from the way he speaks he has no respect for his students, and unfortunately thinks he's God's gift to the subject.
What can I say? I had a hard time concentrating because he was pretty hot in that silver fox kind of way. I hope I don't gross anyone out but he sure looked fit underneath them sweaters! Very enjoyable course, though the essays are kind of a drag
Professor Hume is pretty good. He has a very soothing voice, which is great for putting people to sleep. However, he does also make a few jokes and has a very strange obsession with Zeus and his majestic torso. The essays are kind of a pain, and the quizzes start off REALLY RIDICULOUSLY EASY but they get HARD. So study.
He is an amazing, extremely helpful prof, and I was lucky to have him. He really improved my translating skills! I hope I have him again in the future!
Jim? I thought his name was James. Anyways, super easy workload! I thought the papers were straightforward and easy, although it does depend on your TA. Watching him teach was...entrancing =P
He's informative and definitely enthusiastic about what he's teaching. He's clear, thorough, and interesting. Yes, he does have a rather high-brow-sounding voice that could put people to sleep or sound condescending, but I find it soothing, and I know he isn't trying to be condescending. He seems like a genuinely nice person. I like him as a prof.
This was the only class I attended because I wanted to. Passing would have been very simple without goingto class, but it was fun. The subject is very interesting and the Prof is GREAT. The papers were very simple and the class was a GPA booster all the way. Prof. Hume basically told the class stories the entire semester, and it was awesome.
A really great guy, he's nice and his lectures are very interesting. Pretty much everyone attends his lectures. If you go to class and just listen to him it helps cut down time on studying for the exams
Amazing, amazing prof. He was interesting to listen to and rather funny. Answered your questions with sincerity and loved it when you showed an interest in the class. I am stoked to take another class with him.
a little monotone but not at all boring. he really knows his stuff and you just get thrown into the world of greek mythos. if you just read the texts they would be interesting but when you also go to class you learn all the details behind the words. the history behind it and the parts of the myth that aren't recoded by all authors
Possibly one of the most boring professors I've ever had. His voice is very monotone and like a lullaby, it just makes you fall asleep and drains all your energy. It's really a shame because the content is so interesting, yet he somehow makes the class so boring. However he really knows what he's talking bout.
Very interesting class if you like mythology however not a very interesting prof he is the definition of monotone.
hume is intelligent, funny, and articulate. he provides interesting and useful perspectives outside the textbook and marks fairly. not to mention he is as complete silver fox. sit near the front.
If you go to class, go to tutorial and read the textbook his exams are fair but difficult. This will not be an easy A but if you try and ask for help you will do well!
Super easy class to take. If you attend class there is no possible way to fail the exams.
I absolutely loved Prof Hume!! The class itself is difficult and you kind of drag your feet to class but once he starts talking, you just get so captivated and intrigued. He is so knowledgeable, has a sense of humour and VERY CUTE. A little intimidating and you need to study LOTS, but awesome for learning interesting hisotry facts. Great man.
Good prof - lectures are pretty much mandatory as he doesn't post lectures on Bb. Ppts are interesting though as they're crammed with pictures. He's kinda sadistic and gets really excited with sacrifices. Hilarious guy!
Great prof, very passionate & knowledgeable on subject. Does not use blackboard but easy to contact via e-mail & office hours. Quite funny and keeps you engaged in the class. Highly recommend.
Professor Hume is fantastic. He is very knowledgeable, and incredibly engaging. It is a real delight to take language classes from him as he is very systematic.
I wouldn't recommend this class. I'm a GRST major and an A student and had to work harder than any of my other classes just to get a B+. Extremely hard marker. Doesn't respond to emails quickly and doesn't use Blackboard.
a good prof who lectures using primary sources as key evidence along with the textbook and power points, if you do the work and show up to class, it would be hard to do badly, but his voice can be easy to fall asleep to.
Dr. Hume is incredibly intelligent, amazingly knowledgeable and very witty. I loved taking this class with him -- wish I had found him sooner. His marking is fair in my opinion, and if you come to class you should do fairly well on them. When he reads in greek it makes me so happy. He's great - highly recommend.
SHOW UP TO CLASS! Dr. Hume is brilliant, witty, and a nice guy. He's there to help you, and this fact is obvious. However, Greek is a very difficult language if you get even remotely lazy with it. I highly recommend taking a class with him, but pay attention, and memorize those words!
Hume is polarizing. His voice is so soothing, he turns down the lights, and he talks slow. You'll either be very relaxed or asleep within a minute. He knows what he's talking about and his lectures are very interesting. If you take notes on the quotes he uses and read the textbook, his tests will be a breeze.
Voice is really soothing so you always want to fall asleep. 1-2 day wait on email replies. You don't really need to read the texts until the exams. Be sure to do it AFTER lecture cause he'll go through the main points/textbook is extra dull. Super easy exams, just straight up memorization. Images were fair, all from the book & discussed in class.
Dr Hume is a brilliant mind. Exams are all written and he grades on spelling, and with MANY different names spelt almost the same, it can get confusing. Memorization is KEY!!! He loves his topic and you can tell by how he teaches. Pay attention to what he tells you in the lecture and what quotes and pictures he focuses on. Fair guy!
Overall, not great. His marking is often unjustified, he takes marks off from your work on a whim without explaining why. He's not very approachable and shut a few of us down in class without really answering our questions. He's also quite disorganized, he didn't give us any indication of test formats before hand. I hear he's better in GRST though.
His classes are disorganized, his expectations are unclear, and he never really gets into the nuts and bolts of how Latin works. He's more content to just sit back and talk about the themes in the Latin writing rather than actually help you learn about the mechanisms of translating. He's also pretentious, as in, he likes to show off unnecessarily.
I've never rated anyone on this site, but I can't allow the poor ratings on Hume to stand. His love for teaching Latin language and literature is evident, and his knowledge is inspiring. His expectations may be high, but only because he takes both his teaching and subject seriously. He's very approachable, fair, and has a good sense of humour.
Some people seem to think that he deserves praise, and he does to an extent. However, the critical raters below have made good points so I would take the fanboy comment below with a grain of salt. Assignments are not clearly defined in the syllabus, there's no reading list, and he throws a lot of surprise additions to assignments last minute.
Dr. Hume was an amazing prof to have for this class. I didn't even touch my book and I got a pretty good mark. Just go to class, take notes and pay attention to the pictures he shows on his slides. Also, he does post some extra reading material on D2L so make sure to review those as well when preparing for a test.
For some reason when this prof teaches myths, it feels so slow and boring. Honestly going to class every single day isn't necessary. Just look at the schedule and memorize the contents in the pages he assigns. The tests are pretty easy, just fill in the blanks and recognizing pictures from the textbook. He and his TA's are very reasonable markers.
Hume has great lectures! If you're at all interested in GRST you should check out one of his classes! He is very helpful and clear on what is expected for a good mark on the midterms, and if you go and see him in his office he will be even more helpful. You need to study, but only for a few days before each test. Easy A.
Great prof! His enthusiasm makes it easy to stay interested in the material. The exams are directly off of the lecture notes, which he does not post. So go to class and pay attention!
Hume is a very nice and enthusiastic professor. His expectations and lectures were clear, relating to the exams. However final is very hard compared to midterms , you have to read the textbook only for the final.
Not a fan, his lectures were very boring and he dumbed down the material a little too much for my liking. Super easy and long as you focus on the slides. Didn't need the textbook.
This was a very interesting class.
I've heard about how Ancient Greek was notoriously hard, but he made it rather easy to learn. Very pleasant demeanor and tries to help his students in any way possible. He's passionate about Ancient Greek as well and makes it more about simply learning the language.
Doesn't believe in multiple choice so be prepared to do some writing on the exams. Have to know your stuff pretty well. Exams usually consisted of fill in the blank quotations and describing pictures. Didn't attend most of the lectures but read the textbook thoroughly.
Granted, I'm very interested in mythology, this course was very enjoyable. Dr. Hume, as strange as it sounds, has a very soothing voice- which can either mean he's easy to listen to or easily puts you to sleep. Textbook is not needed, but do attend class as he doesn't post any lectures on d2l. Just listen, make your own notes and it's an easy A.
I had Hume last year for Latin and received a B after getting all As with previous profs. I then went to another uni for grad school and got As again in Latin and many of the techniques Hume taught me were considered "confusing" or "unclear methods of translation." So as far as I'm concerned, he worsened my experience in every way. Terrible prof!
There were four people in my LATI301 class. It was an absolute blast. Yes, it was difficult, but he gave us lots of paradigm handouts to help with memorization and let's be honest, Latin is pretty straight forward. You gotta work for it. He truly is very pleasant, funny, and I liked going to his class. I'd recommend him highly!
He is very rude when you talk to him. He doesn't not have any respect to any of the students and tries to bring down student indirectly. His test and midterms are unpredictable and he is boring as hell.
Very passionate about his subject matters. Lectures might be boring t times but if you're really into the myths, it' actually very enjoyable! Doesn't believe in multiple choice questions, test are fill in the blanks from quotations, family tree and match the following(this will screw you) Overall, a good elective choice
His lectures are so easy to follow, and if you actually pay attention in class you'll get an easy A. He tells you everything you need to prepare for the exams, and he genuinely cares about what and who he's teaching. He also has the best voice I've ever heard.
Tests are not multiple choice because he doesn't believe in them. Take it with Natali if you're looking for an easy A
Though his mildly haughty exterior might put you off at first, Dr. Hume is a good guy. He's hugely knowledgeable about the topics (I had him for both Greek and Roman Religion), very accessible outside of class, and a nice guy. Exams aren't hard and neither are the assignments. Excellent prof, solid class.
Hume was a great lecturer, which made the content as interesting as it could have been. The exams are fill in the blank from quotes and family trees and image identification, however he took off marks for spelling of names. If you go to class and take quality notes and do the readings you will be fine.
His lectures were really interesting, and often approached myths from different perspectives which were thought-provoking. His tests are all fill in the blanks, but if you attend the lectures, make good notes from them, & go through the readings relevant to his lectures you'll do well in this course!
Very passionate and knowledgable. The tests are so easy - exact quotes from notes for fill in blanks, family trees well gone over. If you don't get an A in this class you need to revaluate yourself. Hilarious, and easy to talk to outside of class. Marks efficiently, tests were given back the next week after writing them. TA's are helpful.
Listen in lecture, make note of the quotes and pay attention to the names and places within the quotes. Take note of the pictures and the discussions that take place around them in class. He clearly knows what he's talking about and you can tell that he enjoys his job so its easy to follow his lectures.
As interesting as grst is, I think some of the material is very dry and James doesn't do much to make it more interesting. It'd be nice if he posted his notes online because not all of us have the energy to listen closely for 75 minutes every class. His midterms and finals are fill in the blanks and short answer, multiple choice would be preferred.
Hume has a soothing voice that makes me want to just fall asleep. Take notes of the quotes and pictures he puts in his slides as he often doesn't post them online. Tests were fill in the blank, so you need to know the quotes he goes over and the stories. Very easy course and pretty interesting content.
Okay listen. This class sucks. If you are an average person who is looking for a class that does not require an intense amount of attention DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The exams are difficult as he expects you to be able to fill in the blank of any quote from a ton of stories. The final is cumulative so it adds to the bs of this class. Take my advice
i have never fallen asleep in class until i took this one. his lectures drag on and he does not bring any excitement to the material. i was very disappointed as i looked forward to taking this class. the midterms are fill in the blank, and are based off of a handful of quotes directly from the textbook when he goes over a massive amount in lectures
no no no no no . dont take with him. He aint it
the past reviews are exaggerating tbh! yes the tests are fill in the blank but he only ever pulls quotes from stuff he TALKED about and SHOWED in class! so if you go to his lectures and write the quotes he provides, you'll be good! you can also tell he loves the topics and is very enthusiastic about them!
Hume is amazing. Very passionate and knowledgeable about his topic. I LOVED listening to his stories about myth and seeing the pictures he has personally took in slides. 10/10 would recommend, just show up to class, study, and put in a little bit of the work to get a big pay off, and in my case, really enjoy what you learned.
The material is very interesting and you can tell he loves what he teaches, but he is just really boring and monotone. I found it hard not to fall asleep and dreaded this class.
Dr. Hume is an absolute gem of a professor. In terms of sheer knowledge on his respective topic of study, he is hands down the best professor Ive had. He just knows everything, and thats why its so easy to understand the material; he doesnt beat around the bush and makes sure you know what will be on the tests, which makes GRST209 an easy A.
Hume is very knowledgeable about the course material and is evidently passionate about his work. I took this class as an easy GPA booster but for the tests he takes quotes and has you fill in the blanks of words he has removed. Its a ton of useless memorization so it takes time to study for. If you're not a GRST major don't take a class with him.
People who complain about him didn't show up to class lol. I didn't even buy the book, I just printed the extra readings and attended class and did fine in the exams.
The readings in the textbook help a lot of understand what he's talking about in class. This class is a lot of memorization of quotes. He gives tones of quotes and artwork in the slides that are testable material he uses but the lecture notes are not posted online. I recommend focusing on the extra readings posted on D2L for the tests.
Hume is v knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches. Greek myth is interesting, not v hard but you MUST attend class because lectures are not posted online and he only focusses on 1 small part of the assigned readings. Must memorize every single quote on the extra sheet and basically every detail about 50+ gods/heroes to do well.
He is a wonderful professor and the stories that he tells are super entertaining. Dont bother with the textbook because he only tests on his extra readings he posts on D2L and the pictures he shows in class. Honestly its one of the easiest classes Ive ever taken and one of the most enjoyable. Just go to class and listen to fun stories.
Tests are fill in the blank so make sure you write down all the quotes he gives you as he doesn't post his slides on D2L. An interesting class but there was only three tests that made up your whole grade. Not hard to get an A, but show up.
Course content itself is mildly interesting, but the way Hume delivers it takes out all the interest in it. He's a good guy, just monotone and likes to drawl so there ended up being no point in going to class since no one could pay attention. Not an easy A, however, simply because you're graded on only 3 things the entire semester.
Dr. Hume uses his knowledge of the language of Ancient Greek and Latin to aid in teaching. The class was engaging and if you attend class, exams were easy. He bases his grading at a B average and will mark up or down based on your writing. While you can get away without reading, it makes a difference to engage with content.
I really enjoyed his lectures, even though they can be content heavy. If you've done the readings they are easy to keep up with and interesting. He sometimes reads the texts in the original Greek, which is really cool to hear. Grading is fair, but the only things your grade rides on are 2 midterms and a final.
Only graded things were 3 papers so lectures are not entirely necessary to attend but I highly recommend going because James is one of the most interesting profs I've had my entire degree. He's super approachable and I wish I took more classes with him before graduating.
This class was great- there is 1 short assignment, 1 12-15 page research paper and 1 final paper. You could write on the same topic for all of them, which means attendance wasn't mandatory but lectures were very interesting. Lots of freedom to pick a topic that interests you and use it for the entire course. James is very helpful in office hours.
He is a great prof, but you can't skip class. That being said it is a really easy A, just write down all the quotes on the slides as his tests are fill in the blank. Very passionate and knows what he is talking about, really nice guy too.
He is an okay prof. The class moved very slowly till about week 6 then it went double the speed and it was hard to keep up especially for a language class. He will also call on you randomly to answer questions which made going to class extremely stressful, at least for me.
I think Hume's class is one of the most interesting and easiest I have ever taken. There were 6 books for this class, but if you attend lectures you really don't need to read them. For the midterms and final he gave you the question before hand so you knew what you were walking into. He is a very easy marker and very nice guy.
I've taken another course with Professor Hume before Latin this past semester and he was just as great online as his in-person courses. He genuinely wants to see his students succeed, but also wants everyone to work for it. Don't take this if you're expecting an easy A, but Hume does everything to support students in learning an ancient langauge.
Hume was a great prof! He was knowledgable, friendly, helpful and approachable during office hour meetings. The content of this course was also very interesting and the course itself was designed to help students succeed in my opinion.
I took this course because I loved Greek and Roman Mythology. I do not learn well by reading. This prof assigns a chapter every week and releases a four-page notes package. That's it. You are essentially paying him $500 to read a $60 textbook. The tests are easy, minimal studying for a high grade, but as a course not fun or worth it
Could not describe the prof as there were no lectures just readings. Did not try to teach just read the textbook and his lecture notes. Was not engaging which is disappointing as the material could be very fun. However, if you have the textbook the tests are very easy and good grade booster.
Heavy reading, "lectures" were also typed out documents (aka more reading), tests were super easy as they were open book so you could look up answers. GPA booster. Would get behind on posting lectures. If reading isn't how you learn, DO NOT take him for an online class. If you're not excited about the content, you can get behind in content.
Prof Hume is knowledgeable and fair. His online class had 300 students so he relied heavily on his TA's to help keep track of the online chat and Exam marking. He is very professional, but every now and then he comes up with some great one liners that crack us up! I have him again next term for Roman Religion and very much look forward to it!!
Professor Hume is a great prof and is very knowledgeable. Grades were made up of 3 exams (2 midterms, 1 final). Professor Hume made the exams quite easy to achieve high grades if you put in some effort and attend class, as he does not post his lecture slides. Take note of the quotes he uses on the slides for the tests.
Professor Hume was a great prof! He is insanely knowledgeable about Greek and Roman history and that makes his lectures really interesting. His tests are super fair and if you do read the textbook and go to class you will do well.
Lectures were boring to be honest, but if you take the class online it is a guaranteed A+; don't even need to attend the lectures or do the readings as everything is on his documents he posts. Tests are not multiple choice, they are fill in the blank quotes, identifying the given photo, and a few explanations, but all are very straightforward
Lectures I found a bit boring but the professor definitely had a large knowledge of the subject and was quite passionate about it. If it wasn't online I'm sure I would've found the course more interesting. There was also A LOT of reading assigned, so be prepared.
Prof Hume is an absolute gem. His knowledge in the field made the course and lectures a real treat. Looking forward to taking more classes with him in the future.
The class was heavy in the "lets learn about the old dudes that wrote the Greek myths" instead of learning about the myths. We were expected to take notes, attend lectures, and read the textbook, but I got away with just summarizing the notes posted on D2L and watching the pre-recorded lecture on 2x speed. Not my cup of tea tbh.
Readings were what you needed to know, while lectures were interesting for those who want a bit more analyses/perspective on the content. Definitely a class where you should be interested in the content, or else yes, you will be bored (by content not the prof). Humes obviously loves what he's teaching, good at answering questions, and is organized.
He is a great speaker and very kind. Super knowledgeble. Not too many assignment which was nice!
I don't get the hype about this prof. He is drier than the Sahara Desert, and he cancels A LOT of classes....like 7 in a semester. But he's a super lax marker and permits essay topics that BARELY skim the topic he requested. Do the readings though, and be prepared going into the class on how to do academic research, you're going to need to know.
This prof is crazy boring, but the class was super easy. Took in fall 2021 and tripped into an A+. You need to know the myths but you spend more time talking about the dead guys who wrote the myths which ends up being less important that you'd expect based on time spent on the subject. Prof cxls a lot of classes and does not make up the time.
This was my first time taking a class by Professor Hume and it was really enjoyable, though a lot of reading, and since this was during quarantine, the tests were open book. His lectures were recorded so attendance was optional as well. Great gpa booster.
Professor Hume is a very knowledgeable lecturer! If you're interested in the topics he teaches, you'll be interested in his lectures, though if you're an outsider to the department or just looking for a GPA booster you find the nuances of GRST that he discusses to be a bit boring. Regardless he's a very nice prof who generally grades quite softly!
I enjoyed class, the prof was very knowledgeable. Really appreciated how easy he was with the citations, and that he gave us all the material we needed without requiring a ton of outside research. I found the grading to be harsh because it was a blended (RELS/GRST) class and I have never taken a Greek studies class before, so it was hard for me.
This class tanked my GPA. Be prepared to memorize 50+ Greek gods and their familial relations. 3 exams, all written, specific and difficult. Classes were rough and hard to take notes for. Avoid.
I really liked Hume's class. He is clearly passionate about Latin and his teaching made the course really interesting for me. Latin is tricky, but all language courses are, so if you're interested in the subject I would definitely recommend taking it with Hume.
Wasn't horrible, but he prioritizes memorization of names rather then the enjoyability of the story of greek myths. In this class you memorize family trees, Greek God names, and worst of all, random quotes. He can pick any quote from lecture to put on the exam, and its up to you to use context clues + raw memorization to do this. NOT a GPA booster.
He was a very caring prof and treated his students well. However, this class is not a GPA booster. You have to spend a lot of time memorizing so many names and family trees. The midterm is a lot of filling-in-the-blank quotes for which it is very important to go to class because the slides from class are not posted.
It's not that hard to get a good grade here but some interest on the topics can help get an A+ or an A in general. The slides he shows in class is a more simplified version of his lecture notes and can be helpful in studying for future tests. Showing up can help in identifying which information is important. Overall, a great and fair professor.
Pay attention to the slides he uses in class (since his lecture notes can be more informative while the slides he uses in class is simplified, just not posted on d2l) and you'll cruise with ease. Enjoyed the class but studying for it can be scary with the amount of content that might end up on the tests.
His lectures are fun to listen to and the style is enjoyable. The class was very exam based, and you definetly need to study for them, so its only a gpa booster if you work for it. Exams otherwise are easy, mostly rely on memorization and short writing peices. I really reccommend doing the readings. Overall great class!
respectfully this class made me want to rip out all my hair while simultaneously doing push-ups, he doesn't post lecture notes at all or put quiz dates up on d2l, def not a gpa booster unless ur into greek or have prior knowledge on the subject. he will also call on you in class when he knows ur name and its kinda intimidating
Prof. Hume is an outstanding lecturer and his Greek lessons are highly informative and interesting. Grading criteria are very clear. Doesn't post much online though so coming to class and reading the textbook is a must!
this is the third time i've taken a class with him, he's one of my favourite profs, very funny, gives good feedback, but is a little harsh when it comes to marking essays
While the material was interesting, Dr. Hume delivered it in a very boring way. His lectures are not very captivating, with very little slides. Overall just a "meh" experience, he was not good or bad. Just okay.
An advice I'd give is to research well in your papers. Make sure to find a good handful of ancient resources/literature to use as in your essays, the textbook isn't enough for an excellent grade but it should suffice for one in above average. Other than that, pretty easy class if you're interested in ancient Roman religion.
Some of the most profound and insightful lectures I have ever seen. A true pleasure to attend for someone who is passionate about the subject. He also provides pages and pages of notes with useful information. Some advice: CITE ANCIENT SOURCES! He provides a good chunk of these in the lecture notes, just make sure to apply them in your work.
His lectures were interesting and informative, he adds on to the textbook material and posts the slides so you can use them as study guides. The assigned readings were interesting and were more like a story book than a textbook which made the material easy to consume.
Professor Hume's lectures are engaging, but the class requires a lot of memorization. Studying the slides and readings is key. Unstuck AI was a game-changer for preparing for the exams. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding course.
Class consisted of 2 papers and a written final. Nice guy, gives generous extensions but doesn't answer emails. I found the class to be pretty boring and I think he marks too hard as well, especially in comparison to the rubric. Did let us bring in notes for the final though. Tip, choose to write the papers the TA marks, you'll get a better grade.
Dr. Hume's lectures were a highlight of my semester as his explanation of the covered poems were engaging and interesting. He posted all lecture notes although I would still recommend attending as often as possible as they are very helpful for the midterms and final. a 5x8 inch cheatsheet was allowed for the final exam as well.
Such a goated prof. His way of speaking is so proper, lectures will captivate yet relax you. Also great to talk to outside of class, you can even start talking with him right before lectures start outside of the classroom. Only complaint is that he gave very little feedback on essays.
Incredible lectures, textbook readings are interesting (Its just lore accurate Percy Jackson). He is an absolute treat to look at and the way he speaks is so eloquent and captivating. Very understanding of personal matters, shows respect towards students, and sticks to the course outline. I've taken 3 of his courses, no complaints.
Such a boring class. If you are normal, do not take it.
AN ABSOULTE GEM!! so passionate on what he's teaching and made the stories sooo interesting. Best prof ive had in my 3years
This professor's marking is absurdly harsh. He deducts points on things you wouldn't think is a problem, and his criteria for grading is too vague. He doesn't offer any good criticism in the paper, either, just nitpicks the pettiest of things. His lectures are so incredibly boring you could fall asleep.
Professor Hume is one of the best professors at UofC. His passion for the subject matter shines through across all the courses he teaches, making his lectures insightful and entertaining. In grading assignments, he is fair and provides valuable advice for improving future submissions. I would strongly recommend taking any of the courses he offers.
He has amazing, well-organized lectures and actually provides the ancient sources!! The essays were only based on lectures and the textbook and there was lots of flexibility in the topics! Going to class is a must or else you'll be confused, and don't underestimate the amount of information to know - he's particular about source use in essays!
He seems like a nice guy but his lectures are terribly boring and sometimes hard to follow as Ancient Greek writing is very different from what I'm used to. He's a tough grader and provides very little feedback. Consists of three written essays. If you have to take this class it won't be the end of the world but I wouldn't recommend.
