this teacher was terrible, he was always rude and doesn't allow any talking. He never gives any grades higher than a B and is very stingy on grading.

Jim is a very nice man and a good teacher. I thought his classes were easy, but I'm not smart. Some say they were hard. He let me swear whenever I wanted too. Just don't talk and you'll be fine.

he was harder in 061 than he was in 103......if u take him for eng. 103 im telling you, you will have a good time, he helped me out a lot when ever i didn't understand something and has a very laid back, funny humor side. should be an easy "B" in the class,.....another thing..if u throw a joke at him, expect to get one back thrown at you..LOL

Awesome instructor, enjoyed the class alot. Oh...don't miss any classes for the heck of it...3 absences and you're out...other than that Isbell was tops! Class structure was fun, infomative, and for a class most people HAVE to take, I would take him again!

obviously, i took this teacher 3 times so this is going to consist of compliments, heh. i don't know why mr. isbell amused me so much but i thought he was a very good teacher and his humor was just.. great. i loved it. try not to miss classes and DEFINITELY take up the time to write your paper before the due date and have him review it- veryhelpful

This guy must be the coolest teacher at SCC no joke. His humor never gets old. He makes the subject super fun and easy and may god have mercy on your soul if you pick someone else rather than this guy. well thats my 2 cents.

Classes are okay. He's a pretty nice teacher, but sometimes the classes seem pointless. You come out of class, wondering, "what did i learn?" He's okay, but i suggest you to consider choosing another english teacher. The class has no structure.

he's a cool guy...but doesnt explain anything and he doesnt talk about english..talks about his personal life and how he cant get a girl...lets you leave really early pointless to be in his class..but u have to be there and if ur good at writng essay's youll be fine because thats all we do and he grades kinda hard! i wouldnt take him again

im not a good writer but i got an A, a lot of essay writing but he tells you exactly what he wants, simply essays, journals on lectures which aren't due till the end of the semester. he assigns essays then gives you a week and meets during class hours and goes over the paper individualy with you and corrects them to tell you exactly what he wants.

Hard, unless you love to write.He expects a 4-5pg essay every other week, read about 200+ pages from your txt,& write 1-2pgs in a journal w/ at least 30,& a 10-12pg research. He just wants to prepair you for the next level. My class sucked because we had inmature students that didnt read & we had to review for them even thoe i was prepaired.

This teacher is confusing. He hardly ever holds a real class period but he grades your 5 page essays really hard. The stuff he grades your papers on is material he never really taught us or fully explained. I swear he must grade papers on his personal opinions. How a teacher gets away with hardly ever holding class is beyond me.

Jim is a cool teacher; laidback and welcomes your your opinions. If u mature, self motivated, organized and will put the time and effort into reading & writing, then Jim is the guy to take because he tells you what he wants and he even shows you what you need to do to improve your papers. I think the ones that complain are the immature freshmen

Taking this course will make you think, so if you don't like to think then leave school and work at McDonald's. If you have trouble understanding something in his class then be open about it and discuss what's at hand. See him in his office regarding essays before turning them in on the due date and he will help improve them, then you will get an A

Very helpful in regards to guiding how to write and what he wants in regards of the papers. I liked the way he guides students rather than drilling things like a sergeant. Makes one have a different perspective of approaching issues in life...great class in overall

Isbell is entertaining, and his class is easy to get a good grade so long as you do everything he tells you (which isn't much). He also tells a lot of jokes, good teacher overall.

Took Prof Isbell for an intermission class...VERY INTENSE!!! He is very stringent on his expectations. Several 4-5 page essays, 10-12 page research paper and 30 journals. After a couple nervous breakdowns, I was able to complete the class...in just 3 1/2 weeks! If I can do it, anyone can. Just don't waste your time or his.

He is really nice and helpful, but this class is intense. Honestly, get ready for some killer essays. Most of the essays he assigns are based on iterature with no substance. Like the paper we had to write on "Dumbstruck". He does read essays ahead of time, and advise you on what to do, though. Just be prepared.

isbell was a great teacher. I loved his class and he holds a classroom very well. He's funny and laid back and makes everything as enjoyable as possible. The class was hardly ever dull, it always seemed like he knew what he was doing.

Isbell is never prepaid, often grading papers during class while the student sit and wait. Three of these times Isbell kept students hours after class because he couldnt grade papers fast enough. For a 6-10pm class this was harsh! He also gave 5 students zeros for plagiarism, not because they plagiarized but b/c they cited incorrectly.

Awesome teacher!! I learned soo much. I would highly recommend him! It is not an easy class though if you are looking for one!! He is serious, so if you aren't then don't take his class! I learned a ton even though it wasn't easy. I got an A, but definitely worked for it!!!

I passed with a B but only because I love English. Didn't enjoy him or his class so much. Wouldn't particularly recommend him. Doesn't seem as willing to help you as most of the other teachers at SCC are.. All I can say is I'm glad that class is over!!

Jim was extremely interesting and thorough in his teaching and I really enjoyed his class. Yes there are a lot of essays, but it's an english class...what do you expect? I learned lot on his class and plan on taking him for 103 next semester.

This professor is humorous and laid-back, the latter also being his weakness. For example, he wasn't able to finish grading any of my papers until right before the final. However, he was available for help most of the time and spent a lot of time helping us prepare for the papers. Do all the work and it will be hard failing his class.

This professor is very irresponsible. He was late to class more than three times not including absences. His grading policy is very strict (not entirely a bad thing). However, he takes too long to grade the papers or any other assignment. Used the book maybe once at the beginning.

Great teacher, good guy. Made me understand English like a never had. Five papers is what your grade consists of. 3 essays, one research paper and 2 in class essays. He gives you days off to work on your paper and is extremely helpful when you come see him in private. The people who failed in my class were people who didn't turn in their papers.

I had his class and he grades you soooooo hard!!!! he literally looks at EVERYTHING doesnt let the small things pass. doesnt cut you any slack. he expects you write a paper as if your majoring in english when you are in the lower division. i would not recommend him.

Jim is an awesome guy, I've had him for 102 and 103, and I thought both classes were awesome and fun. For 102, u need the book, it's a death sentence without it. You should also read the book or at least sparknotes the material; if the class discussion sucks then you won't really benefit from the class.

He was a pleasure to have as a teacher.. Very nice and funny and especially helpful. You NEED to read the textbook, period. Or else the discussions will seem really boring. He loves students who participate, he doesn't want to hear from the same person every day. But I would definitely take his class again, he is a great teacher.

Isbell is nice. However his class is unstructured. All due dates were vague and his instructions are little to none. Even if you ask him, it's usually unhelpful. Literally don't do anything in class, but discuss the reading. HORRIBLE AT RETURNING PAPERS!!! I only received 1 one back and it took him over a month to grade it.

Jim is a great English teacher, always giving us the oppurtunity to discus the readings. He read almost every chapter of assigned reading in class. Is interested in developing critical thinkers. Helpful at showing me new tools like, grammar noodle bib, works cited page, note copies. The material we read was informative and i enjoyed it.

Don't expect to know your grade until the day grades are due. He never gives back essays or the grades to them so you dont know how you can improve. He expects a lot out of his students but if you go to him for help, the class is managable

Jim is an ok teacher, however when it comes to grading, he is very harsh. For all assignments,it needs to be turned into Turnitin.com. yet uses the program to mainly grade. If there is slight or unintentional plagiarize, will cost you dearly. There is no way for one to check before submitting. Don't take the class, unless your excellent at writing.

Jim is extremely nice and funny, but that class is definitely not easy. You can only miss 3 classes and then you're dropped. LOTS of reading. Online journals due once a week are easy, but he's a hard grader when it comes to essays. Definitely not an easy A, but he is a great person and very helpful!

I took this class over the summer, so it was a bit more crammed than the usual semester class. I pulled off an A, but definitely put in a lot of time and revisions. He does grade his papers rather tough, but the more papers you do the more you understand what it is he looks for. Not an easy A, but not impossible.

He is a tough grader and requires you to come to class with the material read and ready to actively participate. If you put time into the class, you should do well. Make sure to do the journals. I never did which is why I ended up with a B instead of an A. Laugh at his jokes and speak up in class and he will like you and your papers better

journals are due every week. must buy the textbook. Do the journals if i had one them would have received a better grade. especially since they are easy. participate in the discussions. only assignments were reading the book, 4 essays, journals every week, a final in class essay and a research paper. take english with another professor if possible.

Easy B. Do journals each week. Use topic sentences, analyze quotes, and conclude sentences. Not a bad class if you are fine with B or C. You need prior knowledge of how to write and this class is pretty easy. Attendance is necessary especially if you do not read the book. Use noodle tools to do works cited. Not too bad if people participate.

He wants you to participate within the class. If you're confused, ASK! He won't give out answers without you asking. I love his class coz it taught me critical thinking and many other things that I never learned before. follow his instructions and don't be shy to ASK, then you'll do fine in this class. I got B and I'm happy with it.

Isbell is such a great guy. He really wants to see his students prosper and open their minds to reality. He is a tough grader, but is willing to work with you and help you get that A. Do the homework, put time into the essays, and participate in class and you'll be fine. At worst you'll get a B with minimal effort, but an A requires a lot of effort

I took Isbell's Intro to Lit. class a year ago while earning my A.A. in business admin. After this class, I transferred to university to study English lit. Isbell was always there to talk if need be. Guy's got heart. Just buy the book, be prepared, do the reading. As I remember, there were two larger papers, weekly journals, and a final exam.

He goes by Jim instead of James and it always there when you have questions. If you aren't able to ask him in class he's always able to help you via email. All the work is on Blackboard and make sure you do the reading! There's a lot of it so don't procrastinate! Overall chill teacher and is understanding.

Dont take him if you arent an english major. He expects a 10-12 pg research paper on top of 60 pgs of reading/nite. While reading another book + 7 essays all @ the same time. This is not a class for someone who struggles w/ writing (me). Cool dude but sooo much work and stress. He had a 25% pass rate the semester before me he said. Super hard class

Isbell, is a cool guy, but a TERRIBLE professor!! Here is why: he doesn't grade work and he lacks structure. Be prepared to read an absurd amount, type a weekly journal (15 to be specific), have 2 in class writings, and a 10-12 page research paper. My only advice is to not take his class. Do not be fooled by the previous comments. Trust me!

Professor Isbell expects students to work. You can't expect to not do the reading and pass; don't be a moron. It's an English class, so expect quite a bit of reading and classes are mainly devoted to discussions. Be prepared for two argumentative essays and a 10-12 page research paper. It's hard work, but this is college.

Yes there is lots of reading& essays, just stay on top of it. he is sincere& always makes time available for us & makes sure we dont leave confused. This teacher is terrible. He constantly talks trash on his father and sister at random times, his lectures are dry and he likes to embarrass people. If you work or do anything besides school it will be very difficult for you to pass because he is not very understanding. If you can choose a different teacher do it!

It's college... you're going to have homework! Weekly journal and reading to prepare you for papers. He's always available to help you and grades fairly. Class discussions are interesting and will help you write the papers if you pay attention and keep up with reading. If you put in effort you'll learn how to write better for all your classes

I took English 101 with him during my first semester in college and I still think of him as the best teach that I have ever had. He made us think and encouraged a comfortable environment to discuss and brainstorm. I still think that the papers that I wrote in the class are the best ones that I have ever written.
