He's co-teaching LART 211 right now, but he's a very good instructor. Very personable, and seems knowledgable. I'd take him, but I've already taken Poli 1!
Jim is a co-ed instructor for my LART 211 class right now & he is a really nice. He is always there to help you. Just ask him! Probably one of the coolest professors you will ever meet at De Anza, & if u dont take him then u r really missing out! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PROFESSOR for any subject he is teaching guarantee that u will have fun!!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PROFESSOR for any subject he is teaching guarantee that u will have fun!!!
guarantee that u will have fun with any subject that he teaches! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PROFESSOR!
he's HOT! super funny and engaging. totally recommend this teacher, I learned a lot about the political process and left with a better understanding of my government,
LEGIT as heck. talks about the political process with dems and repubs, and libs and conservs. makes u understand the political processes that go behind running our vast govt
WOW! I recommand this professor!! He wants you to do well in class where he gives alot of extra credit assignments. Little too much work with homework but its worth. Just study ALOTTT for midterm and Final and you'll do succeed.
Too bad I've already taken this class or else I would have with him. Tries to make class fun, relatively easy, very personable. Highly recommended.
Jim was one of the best instructors I've had. He will motivate you to pass the class. A LOT of extra credit opportunities. He makes the class interesting, but there's a lot of reading so try not to stay behind. He is extremely helpful when it comes to the midterms. We review each chapter every week, so just show up and it'll be easy to comprehend.
So this class was not easy. There's alot of reading involved and you really have to set time aside to complete his assignments But he offers tons of extra credit! The class taught me alot and it involved discussions. Totally worthwhile. Also fun class environment.
Jim is an awesome teacher. Even though the subject is dry, he tries to make it so much fun. He's a new teacher and it's no surprise that De Anza is keeping him because he's really a wonderful teacher. Very smart and offers a ton of extra credit. TAKE HIM!
Awesome teacher.easy exams for easy A. His class is fun, interesting and especially he offers a lot of extra credit.
Is his name has James N. or is it just Jim? ~~
Great teacher, keeps you interested in an otherwise BORING subject
Ok teacher but i'm pissed off with his way of working. He gives people the wrong grade points for assignments and extra credit. He gives some people 15 points for a 10 point max extra credit assignment. He mistook my grade point with another classmate which bring my grade down. Good thing I checked with him everything before the quarter ends.
not as easy as people say he is. He grades your attendance and your participation in class discussion. U have to get everything right to get 100 pts of participation from him or else u will just get 80 or 90. If you dont speak up you get only 70. I would prefer Stockwell for less stress.
Jim is seriously one of the best teachers I've come across period! He truly cares about his students and is so helpful whenever you need him. This subject may be boring for some but he makes it worth while!! Highly recommended!
Good professor. Highly recommend. He is an easy teacher really helpful. He will help you whenever he's available.Study hard for midterm and final and you will get A. He willing to help you to pass the class.A lot of extra credit. Take his class.
A or A+ is very attainable. Loads of extra credit. He's a great teacher. He covered very basic material, but it felt like a good intro class. I enjoyed his class.
fun class for summer, except class started 7:30...the subject is boring but he did help a lot to make it fun and easy to understand. textbook is a good intro for poli sciences. but i heard he might change it to a harder one next quarter. He graded in class participation which is suck.
Teacher is chill, cool dude. Attendence isnt important. Lots of class discussion and movies. No classwork, homework is reading quizzes with 5 questions. Group work and skits. Fun and entertaining class. He grades his midterm very throughly for some reason. If you fail his class, you must be retarded.
Jim is a really chill and fun teacher. I didn't expect much attending this class, but his class is easy if you follow and do the work. He likes to get the class involved. No real homework just weekly quizzes with 5 questions, EASY! 2 midterms: 1st one is open notes/book and 2nd one is closed notes. The final is a 7 page paper on family history.
he is really helpful and nice to students! he helps me for the final, and i get extra credits, is it cool? even though you can feel bored, he is so funny and so hot! :D take him or regret!
james is a really cool teacher. He does expect you to know the reading material. There's really no hw, just 20 points quiz every week. Midterms were easy if you know the material. Our final was to turn in our essay!
Having taken this class last year, Jim (James) is 1 of maybe 3 or 4 teachers I will remember when I'm old and have dementia. Unlike other teachers who only teach subjects, he truly tries to embed a principle of thought within you to make you think deeper about history and how it affects the present day. I learned a lot about myself by taking him.
Great teacher!! he makes class fun and hes extremely clear with what he wants. If you do the work, read and do all your quizes you will pass this class. He also offers a lot of extra credit. Great teacher, if he teaches another class, I would take that as well. Thumbs up.
Very easy teacher, short easy online quiz due each week. other than that no hw. Offers tons of extra credit. Midterm/final are straight from the book. You don't need to go to class to get an A. He doesn't ever show both sides of the argument and always asks what you think. Class is good for an easy A not for actually learning about politics.
Not an easy A I barely got an A- and I'm an A+ student. He gives a lot of extra credit options but they require an unproportionate amount of work for only 15 points out of a 1000!!!! yes 1000!! not 100!! Nice guy but tough grader grader
I had Jim in the fall, and he's a great professor. He's doesn't teach a "cookie cutter" course and I actually gained a lot of knowledge from the course about the American political system. He does lean liberal in his views, but that barely distorts the information. EASY quizzes and an "A" is attainable on the exams with a little bit of prep. Rec'd.
He' a cool guy and is very easy to talk to. The quizzes are very simple and start outta the text book. Avoid community service courses however.
Awesome teacher!! My favorite. He really cares. There's a reason all of his classes fill up!
Jim is really nice and caring. His online class is really easy as long as you put in efforts. Even though he mentioned he grades hard on participation, he gives everyone full mark as long as you participate in the forum and do everything on time. Easy A!
I thought I was one of his favorite students, but receiving a B+ really turned down my assumption, as well as my self esteem. Should've studied harder :(
Good class overall, I learned a lot about political science. There is a group project, and my group sucked balls. But overall was a good class to learn things about today's political environment. Read the book and the quizzes are a breeze.
This class was actually super easy. The only hard part is taking time to do the mandatory 12 hours of community service. No quizzes in this class, just a lot of essays which I love! I never do well on tests.
Amazing teacher, take him if you can. Bit of a hard grader though. Avoid courses with community service, its hard if you go to class, have a job, and do the community service
Weekly Quizzes. 3 Essays. Community Service + 1 Paper. This class is not too easy and it is not difficult. You just need to be committed through the quarter. Do the work to earn your grade. You will feel rewarded in the end. This class is fun and Jim is very helpful and nice. I highly recommend taking his class.
He's a cool guy, super chill, and super helpful. Take him and class discussions are fun.
Weekly quizzes, mandatory forum posts, community service, group project & 3 essays. It seems really hard at first. I even got a bad group for my group project. In the end, I learned so much from this class. Jim forces us to work outside of our comfort zone and in the end the skills I took away are super valuable beyond just Poli1. Thumbs up!
What can I say? A truly great guy and great teacher. Very motivated and caring. I learned a lot and it was well worth it. A must take for poli sci majors.
Awesome teacher. There's no other way to describe him, but just pure awesomeness. His expectations and assignments are very reasonable. He really makes you think and apply what you learn out in the real world. Very aspiring Instructor and always motivates you to do your best. Overall, a very fun class! Highly recommend.
Jim is awesome! You will have to do 12 hours of community service and it sounds hard but honestly if you start ASAP and pick something interesting it'll go by fast. Quizzes and forum posts are done on Catalyst weekly! POST TO THE FORUM! It's not that hard. One group project and about 4 essays, 2 are the same essay one is just a revised version. :D
I took away so much from this class. He's a perfect balance between laid-back and "let's get work done." He has a great personality and can make you laugh. He doesn't take himself too seriously either. Not tons of lecture (which I prefer) and the course materials really allows you to come to your own political ideals.
Great teacher and great guy. He is someone who you would talk over a cup of coffee sometimes. Highly recommend him for this class. He makes learning international relations more fun and personal too.
Professor Nguyen is a really good professor. His class is not based on lectures, but on various groups, participation, and reading. Hes a lenient grader who is understanding. Definitely would take again 1010.
It was easy to pass as long as you showed up and did the work. The essays we're easy too, as long as you didn't rush. He's an easy grader, and will have good comments! He's also really nice and will get things done.
He is a really great professor. There is a lot to do for this class. Lenient grader. Mandatory 12 hours service learning, 3 papers (2x500, 1x750 words) , advocacy group project, participation, and quizzes. Quizzes in class and online are a joke. Do all of these and you will pass. Overall great teacher, you will like him.
really fun class. Jim is really passionate about teaching and makes the leaning experience fun. We had some interesting debates about current events. There is reading assignments that are important to read because they pertain to the mid term and the final. Overall this is one of the best classes I took at De Anza.
He is a very clear and good at teaching! Every single assignments are clear from the very first day and what he expected from you is also very clear. There is one big paper research and you better get it done with all the outline when he asks you to because it helps with the grading. Overall.. He is a GREAT and INTERESTING teacher. Taking him again
Jim is a rare teacher- he really works hard for his students. His assignments are easy, but the class has a decent work load. The number one complaint is about the CSL (12 hours of community service over 12 weeks) which is required no matter what POLI class you take so get over it. Doesn't believe in tests, and expects active participation. AWESOME
Jim is a really laid back teacher who gives out many extra credit opportunities. There are two essays and one final reflection essay. Also you have to do community service but overall the class is really simple and easy. he also has these online quizzes due every monday and you get two attempts at it which is a joke. Overall Best teacher ive had!!
Do not take this class if you do not have the time. 12 hrs of community service hrs. 3 essays. Hard grader. Pop quizzes based on what he covered in the class the day before. Advocacy project that will make you have anxiety if you wait until the last minute to do. Only hw is online quizzes based on book.
ok. Jim doesn't use his class time wisely. he gets off topic every time. When we ask questions about the assignments he gives no detail then gets off topic again. He's cool during class but when it comes to asking questions individually, he will totally blow you off and give you back a smart remark. Wouldn't recommend.
This is NOT a typical class with tests, note-taking and textbook material. There is lots of work involved, along with 4 papers, weekly quizzes in class and online, you are expected to do 12 hours of community service and a large group project that will take up much of your time. Only take this class if you have lots and lots of time!
Jim is an amazing professor. He is enthusiastic and helpful. His class was not traditional and it has a way of forcing you out of your comfort zone. I recommend taking Jim if you are up for being able to speak up and voice yourself. You will learn things in this class that you will definitely take with you even after it is over.
He's pretty funny and relatable considering he's only like 26 or something. There isn't a final or a midterm. This is an untraditional class. Don't bother taking notes during PPfilms. First off, all quizzes are online as well as the answers (Google). However, you are forced to do 12 hours of community service and a group presentation at the end.
Mr. Nguyen is by far one of the best professors at De Anza. Despite being an outspoken liberal (also a big plus), he still encourages students to have their own political identities and opinions. I was a TA for his class and had a blast having the chance to get so involved at De Anza. He really opened up the world of politics for me. Take him!
Jim was awesome! If I could take this class again, I would. He has pop quizzes but they are fairly easy. Attendance is important! He will deduct points if you are late or absent after a few times. If I were you, I would take this course during summer. Perfect paste and you have to do less than what the other semesters would have to do.
Easy on the eyes. Took him over the summer and it went by fast, unfortunately I took on more than I could handle & passed his class with a C (out of my ordinary). But I still HIGHLY recommend taking him. Fall would be best due to current events/campaigns. Get ahead start on assigned papers, come to class, participate, & communicate with group.
Great instructor overall. He is really passionate about what he teaches. The essays aren't hard as long as you do all the research on time. Only the first quiz is hard to scare everyone but the rest of the quiz questions can be found on google. Really recommend his class.
Honestly, I wanted to hate this class at the beginning. mandatory volunteering hours, essays, groupwork. But I did 10 hours of work the entire quarter and got an A. No tests, only essays and projects. Went to two thirds the classes. He does take attendance but since he emphasizes "family" groupwork, just be let yo mates sign you in.
Jim made the directions very clear for all our assignments. He worked hard to make sure we were all engaged, and had debates throughout the quarter. He's very understanding and I highly recommend him.
James is a fantastic teacher. Clear grading criteria, extra credit, easy/fun course, with stimulating debates regarding political issues. Quiz answers can be found online! Only downside is there is a group project. Beware. Find a table that you can trust & work with. This will insure a good grade for the advocacy project & group quizzes. MUST TAKE!
Jim is hilarious. You will be put into groups for the entire quarter and will have to come up with a final project with them. You also need 12 hours of community service. At least you get food every week and there are no class test, quizzes, or final. He's a lenient grader on the research papers. All the answers for his online quizzes are online.
About as good as it gets for a teacher. You have so much extra credit that there's no reason not to get an A. He's a chill grader. Make sure you follow his instructions. If he says to talk about the politics, don't ignore him. You'll get that A you want. Also, make sure you actually do the work he assigns, like service learning.
This was one of my favorite class during Spring quarter. There's potluck every Wednesday with your familia and there's no final. Well the final is the advocacy project with your familia. It's easy, just attend class regularly.
I love jim! He is very accessible and it made it so easy to love his class because he felt like a friend not just an arrogant professor. Take him!!
Mandatory 10 hours of civic engagement/community service, three papers, and a group project -- very time-consuming. No tests but pop quizzes consisting of 2-3 easy questions. He may seem like a tough grader but I think he will give you an A- as long as you put in work and show interest in his class. Offers up to 30 pts extra credit.
Participation, online quizzes, weekly papers, and group project 25% each. Taken summer, no community service requirement. Legit group project is time consuming and strenuous. Papers are simple and 2 pages double spaced. Quizzes are easy and some answers are online. Must be active online or in class for participation. Gives lots of EC chances.
Mr. Nguyen is a caring professor. Do the quizzes and everything else on time and you'll do great! DONT PROCRASTINATE!
Jim genuinely cares about the class, there are no paper quizzes or midterm or a final instead there are weekly write ups and a group project. There might also be Community service depending on the quarter.
Great teacher. Funny and interesting class lectures. Great time to take w/ elections. Class would talk over him and I thought that was annoying. No tests! Online (open book) quizzes and group quizzes. If you are not a test taker this is a great option. 3 essays total. One group project. Knew nothing about politics and enjoyed the class.
Glad I took his class this fall quarter during the election. I learned so much regarding politics and society. High recommend you take Jim! He's always willing to help his students. Community service learning, end of the quarter group project, 3 papers, and weekly online quizzes. He's reasonable on his gradings and is clear on his assignments.
have no idea about politics and its related field but still enjoyed a lot. Even if you are unknown about politics, don't worry..." just take him". I am glad that i took jim's class on winter, 2017. He always comes very prepare on his every lectures, very clear and keep reminding all the upcoming projects, due dated, ect. I just love his activeness.
love Jim and his activeness on the every class. He actually believe on protest and numbers. Try to put number as a evidance on his every project ( group project, essay, research essay), you will be fine. We 3 sibilings took his class together and really enjoyed. Just participate, comment/ opinion carefully on his every class you will be FINE.
Jim is the best teacher at De Anza. He has his own way to inspire his students to work/ participate/ be active/ and his teaching style. No midterms and guys.......... Do not worry about anything... just take him, he will take care of you
He's great! Make sure you participate in class and you're set. He gives 30 extra credit points. Also, when you're writing his research papers, just make sure to follow the rules. You don't have to be a great writer but make sure you're answering the prompt when asked for it.
This class is only for those students who want to get an A, and understand it's value. Trust me, You will be happy .
Mr. Nguyen can come off as a little intimidating but it's only because he's passionate about what he teaches. He's quite approachable and will guide you if you are struggling and ask for his help. He also gives clear lectures that will help you understand the material even if political science isn't your forte. Highly recommend!
Jim is passionate about teaching! You'll have to participate in politics in and out of class, but it's worth it. The take-home quizzes done every week require much reading, but there's no final test (a potluck instead)! Food day every week to share with table mates. Also he gives extra credits generously.
Jim was an amazing professor to take. He was very well respected in the class but never super strict at the same time. Coming into the class, I had no idea what I was doing in terms of politics, but Jim and his class were amazing in helping me grow as a person and a member of my community. The class is easy if you come every day and do all the work.
Jim isn't a hard professor, it's just that his class requires you to do more than what you're used to doing. For example, the voter registration project: getting 8 people to register to vote & write a paper. Anyway, easy online quizzes & discussion posts. Make sure to participate for your grade! Also, there's lots of extra credit: 50 pts! EASY A
The material is not hard to understand, but there is a lot more work than most people are used to. When I took his class, we had to do 10 hours of community service. So I ended up going door to door, begging people to vote for a candidate. This kind of stuff is very uncomfortable for me, but it makes a sizable chunk of your grade.
The first day of class I was a bit overwhelmed by how he described the class. Community service hours, get people to fill out registration forms, biweekly reflections, and a online quiz once a week. Sounds like a lot but it's manageable. Large class. No homework. Responds to emails pretty quickly. Interesting class discussions. Pretty chill guy
Hands down, Jim is the BEST prof. Lots of busy work but nothing hard! I had him Tuesdays and Thursdays, and we had potlucks and group quizzes every Thursday, 2 chapter homwk due Sunday night. He makes you sign people for voter registration, and service learning outside of class but honestly not bad at all. You can tell he loves what he is doing!
Jim is a great professor! We had to do 12 volunteer hours, pretty easy did it in three days. His assignments are not hard at all! He is very helpful and cares about his students. Homework is quizzes online, also pretty easy if you read. Food every Thursday in class and he is really funny as well. Take his class! trust me!
He really cares about his students, and wants to help them learn. Class is pretty easy, take him!
Jim was one of the best professors I've had a De Anza. His class made me want to switch my major to political science. The service learning sounds daunting but it was such an amazing experience to go through and it honestly changed my perspective on so many things. One of the best classes I've ever had. Also potluck Thursdays were so much fun!
James is one of the best teachers I have had. First, he gave us a free online textbook which is amazing to dont have to pay for at least one book in a quarter. He gives you lots of extra credit. He is funny and cares about his students. Take his class and I promise you wont regret it.
Jim is a fantastic professor! As an international student, I didn't expect to learn so much from this poli class! Took his poli 1 and am taking his poli15 right now. He is very caring and wants his students to succeed. Straightforward requirements, lenient grader. Voter reg and services learning needed, but it is also a crucial part of learning.
His class was inspiring. Not hard at all. 12 hours community service needed. Many extra credits.
Jim is a great professor who will take time outside of class to help his students get what they need! The class is super easy as long as you do 12 hours of service learning! Make sure you participate but the class is fun!
Jim is simply the best. I wouldn't be the person I am today without him. His Poli1 is literally the starting point of my engagement on campus. He is awesome in person as well.
Honestly there are several books to read, but Jim is really chill and is really down to help students at any time. This class helps me understand more about race and racial justice in U.S. Definitely recommend!
No tests besides major projects (voter registration). Homework is just online textbook reading and quizzes. Online meetings (for hybrid classes) and general attendance and in-class participation are pretty important if you want to get an A. Friendly and open-minded professor.
He's really nice and understanding, gives one quiz every thursday with a pot luck with your group. You have to do a volunteer project w 12 hours of service and there's no tests. Textbook related hw every week, easy grading though. There's a free pdf textbook, attendance isn't mandatory but he takes attendance. up to like 200 extra credit points.
The teacher is awesome, and he is really nice. The materials he assigned were inspiring. The class is easy. Mainly, you'll have voter registration assignments, and you need to do community service and write essays. No midterm and final.
this class is wayyyyy to easy. we have weekly readings, in the beginning, they're hard but after you get used to it. he doesn't have a sit-down exam for finals. gives a lot of extra credit so his class is an easy A honeslty.
this class is wayyyyy to easy. we have weekly readings, in the beginning, they're hard but after you get used to it. he doesn't have a sit-down exam for finals instead. has you. register people to vote and volunteer at a nonprofit. gives a lot of extra credit so his class is an easy A honeslty.
This class is really easy. The most difficult thing is to find ten people to register the voting form. Other things are not hard like weekly discussion and writing the chapter summary. It is the best choice for talking poli1
are very opened mind, potluck every Thursday. reading chapter due on every Sunday night. no need to buy the textbook(save money :3 ) no midterm nor final just group quiz every week base on the lecture on Tuesday.
He always has reasons to take points away.
Hes mean and disrespectful Takes you a huge amount of time to do the voter project and weekly reading assignment the voter project is ridiculous dont recommend international students to take him he always has unreasonable reasons to deduct your points
The first and last week might be hard, but after you get used to the workload of reading and weekly writing, the class will be easy. He gives a lot of extra credit. The only hard project is voter registration and community service. If you want to get an easy A, this is the guy.
Took his Summer online class, he assigned so much work and he graded easily in the beginning and then after that he started to get really picky about certain things while grading, which was kind of unfair cause for an online summer course he was expecting a lot. Tons of reading, writing assignments, no final but a paper.
I took his online class for Political science 1. He gives so much homework every week. It is a introductory class but he accepts so much from the students which is very unfair because some students are not familiar with political concepts and thats the reason they are in Poli 1. I had a very hard time keeping up the reading and homeworks.
11/10 dog, fantastic professor, funny and interesting guy. Teaches incredibly well. Definitely a top 3 favorite professor here at De Anza. Take him if you can get the slot.
He is one of the best professors I ever took. He is so passionate about what he is teaching and passionate about his students learning. He helped me be more engaged in politics and showed us his cute ass dog through zoom. I HIGHLY recommend taking his class, you won't regret it. He's amazing!!!
Great Man and Even Better Professor.
Professor Jim is great. I hate politics but Jim does things other professors don't and makes the class very fun. He gives many many opportunities for extra credit. There are a couple group presentations and service learning but that's about it. Overall I would definitely recommend! And his dog was the best, what a chad.
Jim is a very straightforward professor that is very passionate about what he teaches. There are times where he's nit-picky about certain things, but he always gives you feedback so that you can improve with the next assignment. He replies to all of his emails quickly and is more than happy to help his students understand the content.
Do not take him on online. I dont Know what people saying about this guy but he is a tough grader, no matter how much u spend on writing assignment or midterm or final If make 1 small mistake lot of point off. Not recommended as he just told us to read the book and expect know about politics. There extra credit, but up to you to take the chance.
Recommend you take him in class rather than online. In class, you mainly do group presentations/projects & the individual weekly homework. Whereas online, he expects 2 discussions posts a week as well as the weekly homework. Kinda strict on homework, just make sure you read the textbook (which is free online) & use examples. Overall, cool guy.
Extra credit for attending class, extra credit for office hour. Weekly assignments. Extra credit for other assignments. Easy to take. Grades every assignments. Will deduct points for specific things.
super cool professor, really well taught course especially because he had to make it online! i hope he feels better, but awesome class and really interesting discussions.
I took him before quarantine and I love his teaching style. I'm usually the one not to find a class inspirational but the discussions in class were always interesting. It is definitely not an easy A but it is possible. He knows when you're trying your best and when you're not. So, your grade will reflect that.
attend his Zoom section, and you will be 80% of having the A for this class. You will receive extra credits and participation points for attending his Zoom, plus, people will discuss things that will be on the weekly assignments ( free answers for yall). Just do the work, make sure to not copy information without citation, then you're good to go.
Professor Jim is really kind and nice. He managed to explain all contents really well and patiently and he gives rooms for discussions. Really thankful for having such a nice professor in such difficult times. He's also super encouraging and that keeps me motivated many times. Thanks prof!
Highly recommend this professor, I consider him to be one of my top 3 favorite in De Anza. HIs work isn't as hard as you think it would be. Theres 1 assignment a week 2-3 pages. one midterm, and final paper. He gives out a lot of extra credit thats also easy. It helps to attend in class, since the weekly assignment would be on whats in lecture.
TAKE HIS CLASS!!! He is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. His summer class had lectures (non-mandatory), office hours, homework that you can finish within a few hours for the whole week, a midterm and a final paper (both which were super informal). He also offers a lot of XC. As long as you put in the effort, you'll definitely get an A.
Prof. Nguyen was honestly one of the best instructors I've had. His lectures are very informative and the homework is very straightforward. He is honestly great. Would recommend to anyone looking to take his class.
Only thing he did during lecture was sitting down and chill or put some videos to watch. He does not work to help student to understand the politics. He just blablabla about his own unrealistic ideology. I could not learn anything, so it was really hard to complete weekly homework. such a lazy teacher. I hope he immigrates to Canada as he wishes
He's one of the easiest professor you can ever ask for. He's so kind, nice and knowledgable about the stuff. I know online classes are getting so unmotivated but professor James will make you feel so much better. The class is great because there are a lot of discussion. Also, he grades your paper base on your view, not his view. DEF RECOMMEND 100%
suuuuper easy class. very chill professor, lots of extra credit opportunities given and the workload wasn't bad at all. the quizzes are just based off of the online textbook so it wasn't difficult. 10/10 would take again
His class was an online class, but he forced him to participate in the class. Also, I don't understand his scoring method at all, and he's very rough with his lessons. He gives essay assignments without reading students' essays in detail. I will never take his lessons again. He is one of the worst professors I have ever met.
I enjoyed the class and learned more about politics/government. Weekly work was relatively light (1 quiz/writing assignment), with exams based on learned terms/concepts (not difficult if you understand). There is also a civic engagement project (10 hrs volunteering + journal + reflective essay), which I found enjoyable and straightforward.
Overall he was a pretty good professor. Zoom meetings are optional, but if you attend the majority of them you can get extra credit which I feel is unfair for those of us who signed up for a class that coincides with the meeting time. Grading for some assignments seemed a little unfair but also understandable in a way.
Pretty left leaning. Even the textbook he used was pretty biased. I'm pretty libertarian and if you talk about individual freedom a little too much you do get some pushback on your assignments. He'll ask for far more specific examples than when you pretend to be a leftist. I'd say keep your opinions to yourself and just go with the mob.
Do not take this professor if you're looking for an easy A, he is a tough grader and does not give out full credit often. There's also a service learning project where you need to volunteer for 10 hrs at an organization and report it, so if you work full time or have other priorities, good luck.
Prof is an extremely tough grader on assignments that should be graded for participation - thinks his class is important and grades accordingly. 2 quizzes and a writing assignment (I consider myself a strong writer and he never gave me 100%) per week and essays for the midterm/final. Avoid him at all costs!
Young dude who loves his job, but that doesn't mean he loves his students! He grades hard and your grade is based off of one paper at the end of the term. I had a B all semester and because I slipped on my paper I received an F. Warning you all now, don't take him his high review score is very misleading. He's very friendly but I don't care for it.
such a chill dude. he clearly cares about politics and his students. he especially wants to know your take on the ideas presented in class. there's a 10-hour civic engagement project due at the end of the quarter, so if you can't make that time commitment, don't take the class. also, one group presentation where you present a political ideology.
The best Professor at De Anza for poli science! This was an easy and engaging class. Jim is extremely understanding and kind. Writing this because I absolutely don't understand a few negative reviews below, I think they're very misleading. Take his class if you find it!
During the first two weeks, the professor was a nice and flexible person. But after 2 weeks, the professor made a sudden change of personality. The words he used were not professional and we felt mean and mocked. His grading system isn't reasonable. He made write openly but he tried to limit our answers and reduce the marks.
Political professors teaching fundamental laws should communicate respectfully. Regrettably, this professor frequently interrupts complaints, mocks feedback, and imposes narrow parameters on assignments meant to encourage open-ended exploration. Ensuring teaching methods with student needs is paramount for fostering effective learning environments.
The worst professor I encountered during my time at De Anza College in terms of student interaction.
Clear, informative lectures. Professor Nguyen wants to see you succeed and grades accordingly. If you're willing to participate and make an honest effort, he will work with you to overcome obstacles. The 12hr civic engagement project was pretty enjoyable as well.
James is one of the best professors I've had at De Anza College. He genuinely cares about our learning and always responds to emails immediately. The requirement to complete 12 hours of volunteer work about civil engagement was a truly meaningful project for me. As long as you put in some effort, the professor will notice. Highly recommended!
the best teacher i've ever had. graded on only a few assignments but its easy to get full grades on all of them. i wrote absolute bs for some of my hw assignments and still got full scores. take him if ur considering!!
Mr. Nguyen was a fine teacher and his curriculum was understandable and easy to come by. However, his lectures should be a little less about his personal politics and more about the material.
Professor Nguyen's class was pretty chill, with lots of extra credit and an easy workload. The online textbook was a breeze for the quizzes. I found unstuck study super helpful for prep - highly recommend checking it out.
Dropped me for no reason. Not a required class though so glad I didn't waste my time learning about something I wouldn't even need especially by a terrible professor
Jim was always willing and ready to help his students with anything, class-related or not. His assignments are very easy if you put in the effort and do the readings. Great professor!
Very caring and respectful professor, there's a group project that you have to work on with other classmates and present to the class on Zoom, he gives a lot of extra credit, there's a mandatory 12 hour volunteering project as well so it may sound bad at first but it's actually enjoyable, textbook is freely given, and overall just an easy A
The professor is very passionate about teaching and politics. He wants everyone to succeed and will give feedback for canvas discussions. You must complete community service hours to connect them to a final essay, and you will have a chapter group project based on the textbook.
Would definitely recommend him if you ever need a political science class. Chill teacher and one assignment due per week but attendance is mandatory.
accuses you for using AI for no reason, inconsistent with assignments, and his grading of civic engagement is horrible
I recommend this class. The professor is super chill and has structured Canvas really well. All the assignment instructions are clear and straightforward. Just keep in mind that you'll need to volunteer for 12 hours with some organization and then write a journal about it. There's one assignment per week with one reply to a classmate.
Really chill and understanding professor that cares about students. He is very straightforward and clear with what he expects for assignments so if you follow it, you will get perfect score. One chapter of reading each week and discussion post are simple and textbook is free. 12 hours of civic engagement required with journal and reflection at end.
Professor Nguyen is the best polisci professor, very helpful when asked and simple clear instructions on every assignment. Consists of weekly discussion posts with reading, 12 hours of community service and an essay as a final
Very bad teacher
Very bad teaching setup
Bad professor
A lot of ratings say he's great, he cares, and he probably does. But, if u want an easy simple A, don't take this prof. Major part of the course is a community service thing where u need to volunteer, reflect + keep a journal, and write a reflection and do a discussion. His grading is confusing, he accused me of using AI and I don't.
Professor Nguyen might be the best professor I have taken at De Anza. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. We had weekly assignments answering questions from the book and a 12+ hour civic engagement project with an essay, journal, and timesheet. Overall, the class is an easy A if you follow the instructions. Take him!!!!!

Just show up to class, and you'll be fine. He's very nice and cares about his students. The only potential issue is that each week, 4–5 students present that week's chapter, which takes up most of the class time. I found this engaging, and Jim does provide thought-provoking questions, but I could see people asking what exactly his contribution is.
