If you take him, take the night class. Exams are take home in the night class. Don't read the book until you look up stuff for the exam. One quiz on Africa, one paper, four exams that are all easy to do. JUST TAKE THE NIGHT CLASS!
Great teacher! Gives a lot of notes, but he also shows a lot of movies. Day class exams were take home too. Knows his stuff, interesting to listen to.
take home tests! woot woot! however, he expected us to learn all the countries and rivers in africa??? what's the point of that? BORING class, but easy A.
This guy is sooo passionate about geography!! I still am not not excited about geography after taking the class but he teaches you a lot and knows his stuff! Plus, he's a really nice guy. Take home tests, easy.
If you're downtown, it may be worth driving to Allendale to take w/different prof. In-class exams = trivia contest. Take homes barely relate to notes! If you have to take this prof, stock up on pens & paper! You'll need them for all the notes he gives.
I really enjoyed his GPY of Latin America class! He truly loves geography and is always helpful. Do take notes, you'll need to have them at some point!
You will take tons of notes, but the class is not hard. Map quizzes were easy, and he gave us take home tests which were not difficult. Nice guy too if you talk to him.
Penn's awesome...he is so knowledgable and excited about what he does. He made me want to change my major to geography (which I"m planning on doing) Lots of notes, but it's interesting stuff. He's a great guy
He gives so much information and requires you to take so many notes, that you end up confused and learn very little. A few take home exams and a couple hard in class exams. Study your notes!
He is the most boring prof on the face of the planet. He doesn't teach, he just talks at you. Before this class I was actually interested in Geography.
so yeah, he covered the middle east and brazil a little too much for my taste, but this is a no-brainer class. he does know his stuff, but he's too reliant on overheads and taking notes, which he talks to fast to get them all down... but he's alright
Somewhat boring lectures and readings, but all in all class is easy if you pay attention and do the readings...
worst teacher I have ever had! Monotone, boring, and reads his own powerpoint slides. Attempts to make the class more difficult then it has to be. TAKE ANOTHER PROF!
Boring class (at least for 3 straight hours, it is). Avoid taking the night class...the only good thing is take home tests. He tries to make it interesting with videos and he does know his stuff. But it is an easy A
Easy class, but extremely boring. Take home exams are great!
Good teacher, will help you out if you ask him. My best Geography teacher by far. Sure sometimes its a little boring but what do you expect, its school. Oh yah, don't miss a class he takes attendance usually. Take hame tests are long but sweet.
I dont know if hes working on his dissertation, but this man spent barely any time on this class. We watched 16 movies and then students gave presentations on chapters of the book, something he should have done. The topic is really interesting, but he made me really hate the class...dont take it
You watch videos...every day. The assignments were easy. An easy A class if you do the work.
Penn is a good teacher. He is very bland and the class is extremely boring, but the information is clear. Do not take this as once a week 3 hour class. You'll never go
He is boring but the class is easy. Make sure you actually go to class because he hands out assignments without notice so both times I skipped I missed a 20 point assignment.
he is kinda boring but means well. papers are easy but a decent amount of work. exams were all takehome. dont skip in case he gives out an assignment bc most cant be made up, i started to like the class about half way thru the semester, nice guy, just not always on top of things
do not take GPY with him. he is pathetic and VERY boring. tests are insane and cover NOTHING that he teaches in class. papers aren't bad, but this class in general is a waste of time. Penn cares way too much about GPY and needs to realize not everyone out there is a GPY major.
GPY 235 is a gen ed and he needs to realize that. Two of his tests were take home and those are good, but he pretty much lied to us about the material on the first exam and the final! Nice guy though and quiet knowledgeable.
He is a very boring and unclear prof. Although if you ask him for help, he'll be more than happy to assist you. There was 2 take home exams which were really long and easy. Watch out for the 1st exam, that one is not take home. You may find yourself skippin his class A LOT!
DO NOT TAKE! So boring, tooo many dumb videos and powerpoints. He thinks everyone is a wannabe geographer and assigns way too much work for a gen ed class. 2 take home tests that take hours to finish and the other finals are nothing like he says. The 6-8 page paper is the worst cuz it takes like 14pgs to answer all his questions!
I had him for GPY 235, and purposely took him again for GPY 335. He is definitely a hard teacher, but he is extremely smart and very helpful. Take home exams are nice, and the research paper is not difficult, just takes some time. He is one of the most experienced profs. I had had at GVSU.
Wonderful and smart professor. Don't take this class if you are a slacker-if you care about your education he is one of the best prof's at the school. Extremely easy to approach, helpful, clear, organized and great first hand knowledge. Test are a challenge. Don't take it as a summer course if you have other classes-A LOT OF WORK!
Boring and unorganized! Nice guy, bad teacher. His tests are hard and cover things not covered in class (some of the stuff is near impossible to find in the book as well). If your heart is set in taking GPY 235, I suggest a different prof, this guy is just too confusing and boring to really take anything important away from his class.
His lectures have good content, poor delivery...obviously knows his stuff, but simply stands there and drones for the entire class, not much discussion, not very exciting. He is a nice guy and is willing to help, no question, but not the most interesting teacher.
SO BORING! I almost fell asleep every class. Nice guy but very boring and his exams are extremely hard, hardly anything on the test was covered in class.
WOW...if you like SWS courses, you will love this class. You will write more papers about things you never wished to care about. He is the nicest guy and is flexible but give me a break...he assigns 2 page plus papers every week and then one big paper at the end of the semester. Multiple choice tests??? What are those? Be Prepared to write...
boreing....nice guy but his exams are very hard, class isnt too bad, nothing exciting.
Professor Penn is a very knowledgable person. His class is very challenging and helpful. I recomend this class to anyone who really wants to learn about the world.
he is an alright teacher he is just not clear sometimes on what he wants done
I liked his class, but the movies he shows are so boring and the tests are impossible, but he was a good professor.
Dr. Penn, was very helpful and knowledgable. I am very glad I took his class, it was not easy, it was challenging and worthy to take it. I recommend this professor to anyone who really wants to learn and take college learning seriously:)
This class was extremely boring. You have to attend class, as he takes attendance almost daily. Most of the class is taught through student presentations. He lacks his own teaching style. Tests are all essay, usually take home, but you have to write A LOT in order to get a decent grade. Not very clear on what he wants on assignments/tests.
lets you know what you need to know for the tests and is great if you don't get easily bored
Prof. Penn cares about students learn real geography. He is not easy but it is worthy to take his courses. I recommend him as a professor if you really want to learn and analyze different issues around the world.
i just wanted to say that no one listen to the rating below me...not because i have taken this guys course...but because whomever wrote below me is lucky to have passed high school. cheers.
He is really interested in the field of geography, and has worked on many projects around the world. He gives study guides for exams, most of the exam covers notes from lectures and films. Easy points can be earned on just memorizing the maps.
Prof. Penn is a very read and informed person. He has and shows a lot of field work, specially from Peru. I learned a lot from his class. I recommend taking his class if you really want to lean things that you will be aable to use in real life.
Very boring lecturer. Very repetitive. you will hear "corn, or maize as the rest of the world calls it" at every possible opportunity he has. Map quizs are easy but his tests are ridiculous. They seem to have much more specific information then was presented in class. easy class if you are smart enough to take it credit no credit, else it sucks.
During lecture he states things that are common sense. So it is shocking when his exams roll around and you know none of the answers! He is a wonderful person, but maybe not good for teaching. Avoid him when registering for this course.
What a nice man. He remembered my name at the end of the year out of a lecture of 100 students...not many take the effort to do that. Slides/class is sometimes confusing but he is so nice and map quizs are easy. Sometmes he can be boring but it is GPY--nice, kind, and willing to help!
Professor Penn is very nice and knowledgeable. He obviously has a lot of interest in this topic. Map quizzes and assignments are easy, but the exams are ridiculous. Study guides are misleading because it's only a small portion of what's on the tests. Tests cover much more in-depth than gone into in class.
Very nice man. Slides are very helpful for tests. All of his quizzes were really easy, however he is very particular about essays. He teaches a lot in one class period, so get ready to take some notes and right a lot.
He does not teach for the material on his exams. He is nice, not very helpful, expects a lot from his students when it seems as if he does not put time in to make sure his student understands the material. He is also an unfair grader, he will give you a 27/30 just because. Avoid this guy, he will most likely ruin your GPA
He is an excellent Prof. If you go to class regularly and make an effort for the two or three projects he assigns, then you will have no problem passing the class. He does a lot of power points. Exams are fairly easy.
I definitely would not recommend this professor. His exams are extremely hard he grades unfairly and when you go to his office hours to ask him questions or email him questions he tells you to refer to your notes, and won't answer your question. He shows a lot of boring geography videos every single class.
Don't listen to the people that say he's hard or unfair. Just talk to him. He's a very nice guy and if you talk to him and participate in class, he's really easy. There's two in class exams and one take home. He gives you what will be on the exam, so make sure to study that and ur notes. You take a lot of notes, but he tries to make it interesting.
It's pretty apparent that Professor Penn hates his life. If there is any disturbance or inconvenience, he can't function-- it's ridiculous. He actually told me that I needed to be quiter during class. How obnoxious. I lucked out and got an A on the first exam, which essentially was the only test we had, other than the final. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Clearly Professor Penn doesn't enjoy interactive activity or know what a dual tone voice is. He will stand at the front of the room and talk to the board. Not with the class, but TO the board, about completely pointless pictures and paragraphs that make no sense to begin with. Just wait for the 'easy point' map quizzes. His outfits are fun though.
I highly suggest a different professor. Nothing on the test comes from what you learned in class. When you have "easy map quizzes" he hand draws the map so you can't even tell what you're looking at. He speaks in monotone and makes you watch pointless videos. Also, he doesn't post grades on blackboard so you're clueless to what your grade is.
A nice guy, very helpful and willing to work with you if you have issues. A lot of kinda busy work stuff, just things to fill the gradebook. He knows the subject and likes to critique the textbook. Exams are short answer and essay so get ready to write. Research paper and presentation are a big part of the grade so start on it early.
I liked this class a lot and I like Prof Penn. He knows what he is talking about and tells you what to study for tests. He has power points online but he leaves out a lot of what he talks about so that you will attend class. Tests are not hard unless you miss class.
Jim Penn is the worst prof. I have ever had. He rambles on and on about cocoa beans and what not. I would recommend to everyone NOT to have him as a professor. It doesn't matter if you go to class or not, (I tried both methods) being able to comprehend his boring lecture will be difficult.
Jim Penn is the worst prof. I have ever had. He rambles on and on about cocoa beans and what not. I would recommend to everyone NOT to have him as a professor. It doesn't matter if you go to class or not, (I tried both methods) being able to comprehend his boring lecture will be difficult.
Prof. Penn was great in his lecturers. No matter what other reviews say about him, he covers everything that you will be tested on. He lets you know what to focus your readings on and your tests reviews. If you have any doubts, you have to speak out. Any teacher will help you. He makes material interesting by giving recent examples.
He isn't a terrible professor, but he isn't the greatest either. As long as you read the book, follow the lecture notes, and go to class to watch to videos, you will be fine.
Very knowledgeable and pretty funny. His classes are fairly easy, but there is a lot of writing and critical thinking involved. There shouldn't be a reason why someone would do poorly in his class. Just attend class, do the work, and ask questions.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I thought this class would be interesting going in. It definitely was not. He gives no homework to boost your grade. Only three extremely hard tests and a final. Also, we are supposed to have a paper but yet, there are three weeks of class left and he still hasn't given us a topic to write about. AVOID!
Alright professor, but easy class. If you study these tests are not extremely hard. Have to write 4 short essays, which again are extremely easy. You will get out what you put in. Do the work, study and you'll be fine.
Jim Penn rocks, people who rate his classes are hard must be stupid or something. For one thing he knows what hes teaching thoroughly and uses a ton of his own research so class is interesting but you have to be there because the book won't help you a ton. There is no lame homework. He grades exams and papers on concept know them and have examples.
Very good teacher, easy to follow and understand. Will help you out on any questions you have. Tests are fair but you must know the material.
Hes a nice guy. Not my favorite, but he explains things well and goes slow. He prepares you for every quiz and exam. You must attend class because a lot of discussion topics are on the exam. Really easy class.
Easy to understand but there is a 12 page paper and 10 minute presentation. Exams are mostly take home but take a long time to complete (3-4 hours). Jim is an extremely kind man and was a pleasure to listen to.
Very kind man but the 12 page paper and 10 minute solo presentation wasn't fun. Isn't very helpful over e-mail and course expectations weren't very clear. I got an A, but I definitely had to work for it.
I really liked him! If you go to class and take notes you will do fine on the exams. He really tries to get to know students and if you go to his office hours he is very helpful:) All exam questions are taken from his power points. I recommend him:)
Really great professor! Class can be a little boring, but for the most part he makes it interesting. If you do the assigned readings, come to class and take notes, its an easy A! He is open to questions and very willing to help. He is very passionate about geography and wants to share it with his students. I recommend him completely!
He knows what he is talking about in his field, but i feel theres some communication error. He seems uninterested in teaching, and would rather spend his time actually doing geographic studies. I didn't enjoy his class but i did enjoy discussions. Great person to talk to, average to learn from.
Very nice guy, but class was EXTREMELY boring. Weekly Assignments that took about 1-3 hours/ 12 page paper smh/ 2 tests/ field trip. He was unclear on assign. Class wasn't difficult prof. Penn seemed to be very knowledgeable, but just so boring. In all I would not recommend him, unless you wanted to talk trees all day.
Professor Penn is a very nice man. Personally, I can't say anything bad about him, but in the class, his lectures are incredibly dull. You spend most of the time just listening to him talk, and his tests can be very random. If you're a person who has a short attention span, I would suggest taking someone else.
Very nice man but not a very easy class. You need to attend class or the powerpoints wont make much sense and need to study for exams. Not a bad class, but not an easy A.
Really nice guy. Tests can be confusing because his study guides don't always match up to the tests, and his in class powerpoints are always missing slides compared to the notes. Attendance not mandatory. Overall kinda boring, but not hard.
very very boring, map quizzes were so so depending on time you put in. tests sucked first one I don't think anyone did good. then he got better with study guides but many people leave he just keeps talking. would not recommend
He doesn't teach, he talks at you. You have to pick out the information you think is going to be needed for the tests. Majority of the test questions are from the textbook not his lectures.
Prof. Penn is passionate about Geography and enthusiastic about the material he teaches. His lectures are very long and his expectations aren't always clear. It's easy to get bored during lecture. He shows videos in class and assigns readings from the textbooks to read on your own time and references them on the exams.
Lectures are long and dry but Penn really knows what he's talking about because he has a lot of experience in Latin America. A few homework assignments throughout the semester but they don't take long. The midterm and final are both take home. One long research paper and presentation but other than that the class is pretty easy. Show up & get an A.
Nice man, terrible professor. Doesn't teach, rather just talks about his experiences with geography and the trips he's taken. Lectures are dull and notes aren't even used on the tests which are take home essays. 8 page research paper due the week before finals and then a take home essay final exam due the week of finals. Ridiculous and pointless.
I actually enjoyed this class. But, if you dont have any interest in Latin America, I dont suggest taking it or youll be very bored. Professor Penn is a really nice guy and very knowledgable on a huge variety of topics. The lectures are long, but you dont have many homework assignments and both the midterm and the final are take home.
He's an okay prof, he's very knowledgeable. However, he doesn't answer questions clearly so it makes asking questions hard. Also, exam reviews cover a lot of stuff that was not covered in class or in the BB notes. Overall, the class was okay but I wouldn't take it again.
Good guy, not a good teacher. His online powerpoint are not helpful, and he is very unorganized. Very boring lectures as well. His test are very different from his lectures.
Lot's of writing. Nice guy but not the best teacher. His lectures are long and dry and the slides are out of order/different then the ones he has you print out.
He's alright, he definitely knows what he's talking about. The exam review guides don't always cover everything in the PowerPoint slides to make sure to take notes. However, he doesn't answer questions very well and just tells you to look over your notes. Which I hope you do anyways before emailing a professor. Overall I wouldn't take it again.
Professor is very knowledgeable about subject. Has a lot of real world, personal stories to share related to class material. Very interesting class.
He mostly just talks about the trips that he has gone on. It seems like he is very proud of going to Peru since he talks about it all the time. Lectures are boring. There are a lot of opportunities for extra credit. I mostly just listened in class, so the tests were pretty easy. The other homework assignments were easy as well.
Professor Penn is a great guy who cares about his students passing, but at no fault of his own, this class was boring as hell. Maybe it was just the fact that the lecture was 3 hours long, and the topic wasn't particularly interesting but I would not recommend this class. It was a fairly easy class though.
Professor Penn was a super nice guy. Wouldn't recommend taking the class as a 6-9 though, it can get a little boring. But the homework assignments weren't very difficult, and tests weren't too terrible either. However, there weren't a lot of assignments so it is in your best interest to do well on them.
Prof. Penn's lectures are boring, his voice is very unexpressive and he can talk you to sleep. This is 100% the kind of geography class where you're expected to memorize facts, such as "What river flows through XYZ region of country ABC?" to pass exams. I don't think I learned anything from him and his class didn't make me appreciate geography.
Took James/Jim as a biweekly hybrid 6-9. Hybrid weeks u did nothing. He did not work BB very well (not sure why he's teaching online). Exams were the study guide but u needed to know every word he said during lecture. The HW assignments were kind of challenging and lengthy. Very monotone. Would never take again. Found it easy to get an A or B tho.
I took Dr Penn for GPY362 and really enjoyed having him teach the class. He's very knowledgeable in the field of bio geography, and brought a lot of his personal experience to the class. There was a group field trip to a chestnut farm that included amazing food, and he gave one group project that was a little rushed but graded fairly.
Jim is very respected in what he teaches for this class because he has so much experience with it. He knows a lot about all the types of crops because he has traveled all over the world and been to farms with these crops. The class mostly consists of lectures and readings. There is a group project with a paper and presentation. Great professor.
He cares about the topic, but his lectures are boring. He assigns hw that is 4 essay questions about an article, but then you read the article and it's a super obscure boring article about brooms in peru because he wrote it. He never gives full credit, and his questions don't make any sense. I'm in honors but he is just too hypocritical and unclear
Super easy class! I barely showed up all semester and I'm finishing the class with an A. His lectures are interesting and he genuinely just wants to see that you put effort into your assignments and he will give you an A. If you can take this class do it!
I had a great semester with professor Penn. He was nice and his lectures were always interesting. I learned a huge amount from this class. The workload isn't too bad and if you do everything you will easily get an A.
I honestly like the guy. He complains alot about his personal life but its negligable. he essententially gives you test answers in class when he says "note this". Class is super easy. Tests are open note and theres basically never homework. Want a chill prof w an easy couple credits? Take Penn for GPY 220.
He has cancelled class TEN times this semester. Ten times. Tests are SOO easy, open book and have like two days to complete. He also cancels one of the class meetings on exam week so you have extra time. Overall the class is way way easy so if you want the easiest A of your life he is the best but if you actually want to learn pick somebody else.
I don't know why his ratings are so low. Professor Penn is fantastic! His classes were long, but they were very informational. His tests were easy and open note, the homework was a little tedious but not hard, and Professor Penn is very nice and helpful. He asks us our opinion on class and the assignments too. I'd 100% recommend him to anyone!
Professor Penn made this spring synchronous online class easy and interesting! I went to each weekly online class session and made sure to take the best notes possible. He is very chill and understanding as well! Great guy, not difficult.
Don't listen to the others... Dr. Penn is amazing! He is such a caring, passionate professor. He is always accessible to students and provides excellent feedback on written work. His exams are 100% essay answer questions, so don't expect an easy A--he will make you think--but if you are invested in your learning, you will do just fine.
He cancelled class A LOT, or left early. He cancelled class 6 or 7 times and ended early for meetings about 3 times. His tests are all online, not timed, and open book/notes. Super easy, you don't even need to show up to pass.
Jim is a good professor. He is helpful when you need him to be and a fun lecturer. He does not allow any technology in his class, so prepare to take notes by hand if you are not used to that. Overall, the class was great--he was just super unorganized.
Professor Penn has a wealth of knowledge on this topic through his connection to the Amazon. 90% of assignments will have to be typed out. Same goes for mid-term and final, but they're simple if you find interest in the material.
Professor Penn was really entertaining. His lectures were interesting and he used a lot of his own experience to drive the lecture. Notes have to be taken by hand, exams are based off the notes, but all exams are take-home and open book/note. We only had 3 homework assignments all semester. Easy class, but I learned a lot! I would take him again!
Penn is an older guy who knows what he's talking about. Lectures pretty much whole class but he is very nice and awesome. 4 exams with 80 questions that are all take-home. A few other take-home assignments that aren't bad at all. You will need textbook for exams but overall pretty easy to get a good grade while not paying too much attention.
Was a wonderful professor. He had such an interesting life and you can tell he really cares about the world around him. Definitely recommend going to his office hours at least once to see all his plants and crystals. Easy grader, would take off barely any points on my take home quizzes even if he left a lot of feedback to correct.
The class was interesting but he wasn't clear on grading criteria sometimes and didn't know certain things when asked.
Shocked that his reviews are this high. Do not take Penn's class if you can avoid it. This class was double the work of any honors class I have taken at GV and material is incredibly uninteresting. His sources are all 10 years old or older. Workload is unreasonable, grading criteria is incredibly vague. If I could have dropped this class I would.
Professor Penn is a knowledgeable and engaging lecturer. While his classes can be a bit dry at times, the workload is manageable, with take-home exams and minimal homework. unstuck study proved helpful for preparing. Overall, a solid class option.
Dr. Penn has an interesting life poorly incorporated into the class, making the course feel useless. Nothing substantial is taught nor learned. All assignments are essays that are vague and ill prepared for. Easy grader but takes forever to grade. No laptops allowed, he prints slides off. Not clear on what is expected at all, honestly would avoid.
