Kelly is a great teacher. He gives you thorough notes in class with strong explanations of every important topic so that reading the book is almost unecessary. He'll tell you which parts are most important and pulls no surprises in the midterms.

He is a great teacher, the class is very good but he doesn't give a lot of marks... Otherwise, don't hesitate to take one of his class on Canadian politics

Very good professor

I found Professor Kelly to be extremely clear and fair. I gained a lot of knowledge about Canadian Politics without too much work. I found his tests to be fair and thought he was very receptive to suggestions from students about tests and essays. I would recommend him for sure. Nice guy to boot!

knows an unbelievable amount, he pulls examples from the early 20th century out of his a$$, he's funny and a good lecturer, he let the TA mark most stuff, and she was harsh, but he's a great guy...his second cousin is owen nolan, ask him about it.

He is the most interesting lecturer, never dull, quite funny, always available to help. If you're taking Canadian politics, make sure you take him...da best!!! The TA was a harsh grader but the teacher was amazing and the exams were fair (no suprises). would take one of his classes again anytime!

Great teacher. At the begining I dreaded canadian politics but now I can't get enough. He really got me interested in the subject and really cared on what the class was thinking. The lectures are very clear. It was not a very easy class but as long as you know whats going on and pay attention, its easy to get a good mark

I took both 300 and 400 level canadian judicial politics with professor kelly. He is The Best professor. He makes the class interesting, cares about his students, he is fair, kind and if you have any questions or need help finding sources for your paper, go see him, he is there to help. He also takes the time to learn his students names.

ok lecturer, gives you a lot of info so you're in class writing the whole time. exams are fair and predictable. make sure you have an intro, conclusion, and clear thesis on all exams! doesn't seem like he listens to people's comments and seems impatient at people's questions. but second guesses you to make you think.

Really down to earth guy. Great prof. although his lectures tend to lack structure at times, he does manage to get across all of the most important concepts and ideas. Very fair and straight forward exams. No trick questions, just study class notes and you'll do more than alright. I felt as tho i took a lot away from his class

Best political science teacher I have ever enjoyed! If only he taught more at 3 and 400-level, I would take all of his courses! Raises issues in class, asks "why"/"why not" about them, thus making fascinating discussions. However, I disliked his exams. Obscure grading scheme, but not too hard. Textbook Parameters of Power sucked.

Very good professor, he knows his staff, don't forget he is a lawyer. As an international student and english being my second language, I did not participate in class, plus I found him a little intimidating, but that was just a first impression, he is very kind, explains very well and an easy marker. Go to class, do the readings and you will pass.

so nice and very smart! Was very good with his students, treated us like equals. The subject matter was a little boring for my taste, so I did not give the class my all, but I do not have anything negative to say. Although he insists on participation and grades you on it, which leads to a lot of people talking about nonsense :-) Great all around

He's always prepared, knows his stuff, uses very interesting examples, very well structure, interesting class discussions, no surprise on the midterm (I'm assuming the same goes for the final) and makes funny comments! Amazing! Concordia needs a lot more professors like Kelly. I learned so much in his class! Would take him again!

He was an interesting teacher. If the subject interests you, you should take him. Encouraged discussion in class, but sometimes seemed a little impatient when someone shared an opinion.

Love the Prof but the TA is a harsh grader. Go to class and study from the notes- you just need to skimp through the readings.

Concordia needs more teachers like Prof. Kelly. He knows his stuff really well! His lectures are demanding because there is a lot of information. Also, if you expect to take this class in hopes that you can get an easy A, I suggest you look elsewhere. I got an A- but I worked really hard! There are a lot of readings required, but he goes over them!

Big no. True that he has a great presence, he is very articulate and masters the subject matter too well, but he is demanding, it is exhausting. Seeking to improve your GPA? Avoid this theoretical, analytical law class. Harsh grader, he expects la creme de la creme for a 70% grade. 1 mid-term, a 5% paper proposal, a 15p .essay and a final exam.

Lawyer and Prof, Kelly knows his stuffs. He makes the subject really interesting, (canadian politics). Grading is really fair, if you do the work, you'll get the A !

He knows his subject and is very entertaining, very helpful with regards to the term paper. His readings are very important. I would recommend this class to people who like to work hard and get a good grade in return!

He is an amazing professor, but by no means an easy class. His TA at least this year is a very harsh grader, however Mr. Kelly knows more then most if you are interested in his class he is interested to help you. You have to go to class to pass the course.

He is a fair grader. Expects your writing to be clear in order to get the best possible mark. Knows all aspects of Canadian Politics inside out. Very approachable, always intrested in opinions and questions. If you are willing to put in effort he is willing to reward you with a great mark,but you will have to work for that A,A-,B+. A great prof!

Great teacher , very clear in his leactures . If you attend class there is absolutley no reason why you shouldn't pass . His exams are straight and to the point . One of the best teachers i've taken at Concordia . Fair grader , would recommend him to anyone looking to take this class in the future

Very very good teacher. Extremely passionate and loves to talk about politics & laws. Knows his stuff very well and is extremely clear. Watch out for the exams, he is a hard marker but you will learn so much. Rarely gives 5/5 on any questions for midterm & finals but he is an easy marker for the essay and people who put effort will get 80+.

Dr. Kelly is an amazing professor. You can tell her cares a lot about his students and is very intelligent. He is an extremely respected professor in the poli sci department. He is serious, and you will have to work for your mark, but I think it's worth it. If you put the work in you will get something out of it.

One of the best classes I ever took. 2 tests, paper+proposal and participation. Prof is really helpful when you need help on term papers. Important to show up to class otherwise you won't pass. Very open to anything for term papers.

WOW, what a great professor. I cannot believe how amazing this class was. Not only was it enjoyable and interesting, but it was also very easy. I recommend that anyone who needs to take 204 take James Kelly! Great class and it won't take too much time away from your other classes.

Amazing teacher! Very passionate and knowledgable. He made this class so interesting and easy to understand. I took this class just as an elective and it came out to be my favorite class of the semester.

My absolute favorite prof at Concordia. Took 4 other POLI classes with him on top of this one. He is extremely passionate about the material and really is a genius. His grading material is also super clear and he is very responsive in terms of emails which is helpful for exams and papers. If you haven't taken a class with Kelly you're missing out.

Loved this professor. This was my intro to Canadian politics class and I thought it would be so boring but he was so engaging and passionate about the topic that I found myself really interested in the material. I found him to be a tough marker but I'd still recommend him solely because you will learn so much.

Dr. Kelly is a particular prof. He is witty and has a darker sense of humour, which I loved, but its not for everyone. He grades quite harshly at the graduate level. While he leaves feedback, I did not agree with a lot of it. He is definitely a very respected professor and knowledgeable. Would take again.

Fantastic teacher. Lectures were a bit dry, but he has a dark sense of humor that made them interesting. Mid-term + term paper + final. The term paper was challenging, but if you work for it, he'll reward you. VERY clear in what he expects, and goes out of his way to help. Responds to ALL emails within 24 hours or less. Highly recommended.

One of the best in Poli Sci. Knows his stuff inside & out. His class was a carefully constructed semester long essay in the form of lectures. His grading style is that HE is the A+ and he grades based on that. I got an A and the highest mark in the class as an avid student. Most ppl got B's. Very few As or A-. Grades really hard.

Professor Kelly is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell he knows Canadian politics inside and out. Show up to his live lectures and watch his recorded ones because it goes towards 10% of your grade for participation. Do all the readings too and get ready to work for your grade. Probably the most difficult out of the POLI intro classes Ive had

Take my word for it and ignore all the negative reviews about Prof. Kelly. Im usually an average B student who likes to take it easy, but I had no other choice but to work hard in this class because bad habits will result in a bad grade and Im at a B+ right now. Take him youll learn a lot, develop good work habits, and receive useful feedback!

Professor Kelly is very knowledgeable and grades hard for a reason. This is a class where slacking off wont get you anywhere. Hard work pays off and he provides all the resources necessary to make sure we understand the topics. I really have nothing bad to say about him, his class was informative and well structured.

Professor Kelly knows what hes talking about. I was looking at a source for my term paper and the author referenced him, so that was something. He is a tough grader and makes you work for your marks, but his passion for the content is very engaging and easy to follow. Well structured. Mix of tests and a term paper.

A lot of work, readings and hours put into this class, but worth it. He is very knowledgeable and explains concepts very clearly. There are 3 tests and one paper. Recordings off power points + class discussion. I would recommend being on top of your recordings. Readings add to his lectures and often goes over them, so you know what is important.

He knows everything, this guy is a Canadian politics machine. Thus making him the best prof you could hope for if you're interested in this field of political science. He is a tough grader, tests are hard and he is strict about the format of his assignments. But, all of this 'toughness' fades away with the fact that he is a great teacher.

Professor Kelly is one of the best professors I've ever had. I came into his politics class knowing nothing about politics and he fascinated me with his lectures. You have to work for your grade, but if you watch the lectures, do the readings, and attend the lectures, you'll do very well.

Professor Kelly made the course pass smoothly. The material studied is interesting and he does a good job explaining it. Very patient and caring with students. He's straightforward with everything and grades fairly. He also is knowledgeable. I think he's one of the best profs at Concordia.

Dr. Kelly is a great teacher! he's not overly trying to be your friend and can, at times be a bit anal about your bibliography but I learned alot from his class. Class very well orgnised, clear expectations and relevant readings. Unit tests (2x20%) are timed and hard to cram much info if not ready. Will definetly be taking again.

Getting an A is very hard, even if you put in the work. I did Ok. Prof Kelly really knows this subject and is passionate about it. You have to write a lot during the test about 7 min/short answer and 45 min for essay part. The material is easy and interesting, but the analysis is a challenge. Textbooks required. I enjoyed all his lectures.

This guy is the real deal. So knowledgeable. If you don't understand something and ask him to clarify, his knowledge and expertise makes you really come out learning a lot. A whiz and expert in all Parliamentary System affairs. Read his book, you won't regret it. Tough grader but it's warranted. Do the readings and listen carefully to his lectures.

Very good teacher and equally good lectures. Engaging and knowledgeable. Tough to get an A, but you will do well if you put in the work. Tests include a lot of writing in limited time frames. 2 midterms and a final. Overall would take again but definitely need to work for your grades.

Professor Kelly is a very kind professor and he is very knowledgeable about politics. There were 2 major papers to write but overall the grading is fair. All tests including the final were online. This class is lecture heavy and can get monotone but he posts the PowerPoints in advance. Overall, he is one of the better profs i've had at Concordia.

amazing class, he is very passionate about his lectures and is very accessible to students. There is not any homework, however, these are 2 big exams and one paper. The final exam was in person, composed of 5 short answer questions (300 words each) and 3 long answer questions (750+ words EACH). Be prepared to do lots of work in this class.

He is super knowledgeable about politics and is a great speaker/lecturer. Readings weren't too hard or dense. We had one midterm, a term paper, and then a final. I'd say the one downside about this class was that professor Kelly is a hard grader and I'd say you need to study a lot to do well.

Fun class. He really goes into depths on the topic and he knows a lot. He talks a lot about his book, which can be good and bad but it was good in the context of the class. He really wants you to be specific in the exams and give clear examples related to the topic. I would take his class again any day.

I took this class last semester and again this semester because I got such a bad grade and yet I still think Kelly is nowhere near as bad as y'all are saying. He can be harsh and I always felt like we didn't have enough time for exams but he was chill other than that and class content was really interesting if you're into law + politics interaction

Second course I've taken taught by him and he's very knowledgeable on the topics he teaches. People have said he's mean but if you talk to him it's the opposite but it's tough to get a read on if he dislikes you or not. The course is tough but the lectures and powerpoints cover most things and the rest is in the readings so deal with it and study.

Ok so yeah admittedly you cannot tell if he hates you or not. That said bro teaches directly out of his book. Like word for word at times. If you failed 324 skill issue just read and you pass it is that easy. He also is way nicer than he comes across. I took two of classes and they were great, learned a lot about judicial politics tbh
