Overall good professor. Wants you to learn but sometimes can't get his point across. Seems to still be getting used to being a teacher. Always asks his students what they want to learn and how they want to learn. Gives out study guides, not much homework, he likes when people participate in class.
Probably one of the best teachers I've had at Temple, which says a lot about him since he says he doesn't have much teaching experience yet. Very clear in his teaching, helps you understand concepts. Very fair. I even used his notes from macroeconomics class to study for my microeconomics class this semester, because his explanations were better.
THIS IS THE GUY TO TAKE! First of all, he is a great teacher. The class is easy to follow and a pain-free gen ed (I'm a bio major and it did not stress me out at all). Second of all, he asks students what they want to learn. During my semester he also had 2 guest speakers. I used an older edition of the textbook, which cost me $4.00, and got an A.
Great guy but horrible class and teaching, take if you don't mind a B but he is definitely not that great for an honors professor. You can skip class and still do alright, just show up on Fridays for quizzes. A lot of this is self-taught, and there is nothing of value in class.
Professor Kelly is a very nice guy, and is very approachable. However, his explanation of the concepts was murky, so reading the book before tests and quizzes was very important. I probably would have enjoyed the class much more if he hadn't made the reading of Too Big to Fail mandatory. I recommend his class if you are accustomed to text book use.
Good teacher. Although summer classes stink because they have long hours, and it's annoying to pay attention that long, he made it manageable. Tests are fair. You need your text book, but everything you are asked in test/quizzes/HW can be found in your notes. He practically tells you what is on the test. Cool dude. Take him.
focus on the notes more than the book..caz his tests and quizzes are completely based on the notes
James was my recitation professor. He went over the materials that we had to know from class and explained everything very well.
Had for recitation. He's a great teacher, very passionate about economics and teaches concepts well. Gives a quiz in recitation each week that can either be a cake walk or impossible, but it's not a huge deal because they aren't worth much of the final grade. Definitely the best TA for Micro.
Really good teacher, helped break down the material. Has pop quizzes as attendance and three exams for the semester. If you go to class and do homework the class is easy.
Professor Kelly is the man! If you see him on campus, he won't act like he didn't see you. Real people person. He explains himself in lectures. He gives great examples during lectures too. Class is not hard. Do the homework. Study if you want. He also gives helpful practice tests as study guides for tests. Skim it and you are fine.
Professor Kelly is an energetic young guy, but you can tell he's new to 3501. Trailed off on many lectures and wasn't completely clear on powerpoints and quiz/hw questions unless he crafted them himself. Gives tons of EC. Homework is tough, tests usually not similar. Not always available for office hours. Class was fun, can tell he's still learning
Professor Kelly is very helpful if you come see him in office hours, but his class is very hard to understand. His tests are very tough, and a lot of the test material won't come from class, but from the book. He gives out pop quizzes, but it's mostly an attendance grade so he knows that you're showing up.
Professor Kelly is a great professor with positive energy and always willing to help his students! If you go to his office hours he will help you understand the material better! He is the best Intermediate Microeconomics Professor at Temple! Take him, and if you work hard and put in the effort you will pass!
I took Professor Kelly for three different classes and he really peaked my interest. Tests are hard but homework assignments are the shortest I have had in the econ department. Also gives curves on tests. What he wants is not always clear but he's an awesome guy and I would definitely suggest him to others.
He genuinely wants his students to learn but can have trouble teaching concepts to students who are new to the subject. He is caring and values objectivity and critical thinking. Good class to take if you have had previous Econ experience.
Participation- easy 1 question weekly quiz just to check if you're there then 2 midterms and a final and homework online with two chances per question. He's there to answer all of your questions and wants you to receive the best grade possible as long as you try. Volunteer and he will know who you are and he will explain anything again
This class is really hard. He's a good professor willing to put in time for you outside class and available to answer questions. He comes to class prepared. he isn't a bad choice. Its just the content is hard to understand. Study his notes and line it up with the book. Work hard and try your best. You'll make it with his help. He curves tests too
Professor Kelly Is one of the best Professors at Temple. He really wants to see his students succeed and will do everything he can to help students understand the material. Highly recommend him!
Prof. Kelly is super nice and is a lot better than most professors in economics. Small class and really will help you if you need it. Quizzes are super easy, if you just come to class you'll be fine. If most of the class skips, he will probably give a quiz to spite you lol.
Professor Kelly is the best. He's so smart and explains micro really well. It's so nice to be in class bc he goes over all the homework and really gives you the best shot possible.
If you're good with econ. James is good at getting you thinking in the right direction if you really want an A read the book study his notes and go to him for office hours. Just power through and do really well on the first midterm its thw easiest out of all exams. I would say focus more on his notes then hw, which is good to get the complex ideas.
By far one of the best professors in the Econ department. Great at explaining any material you have a question on. Would take again!!!!
Coming from a difficult Macro professor, Kelly was really great! He knows his stuff, and can explain it just as well. He gives "pop quizzes" but sometimes announces when the quizzes are, and they're super easy. You get points on the quizzes just for writing your name. Class is overall great, I wish I would have had him for Macro
Kelly is a really great guy. Econ is hard to follow and after taking it, I realized it wasn't my jam and switched my major, but if you pay attention and ask questions when you're confused, he's more than happy to explain. Only had 50 mins a class, so it was hard to fit it all in. Graded w/ 2 midterms, a final, and a mix of pop quizzes and hw's.
This is not a super easy class but he made the class understandable. I got a B- and did put some work into it. I like the guy, and he did make it interesting
Great professor, always willing to help.
tough grader and doesnt allow many questions
You rely on the recitations to understand the material
not the most intriguing professor, but still made the class somewhat interesting. also he's super friendly outside of class!
Dr. Kelly is a really kind professor, and even though his lectures can get a bit confusing at times, never ends class on a confusing note. If you can stick it through for all of class you will never be confused. He makes you get a textbook for the online econ lab but you never have to read it if you pay attention and read the slides.
Great professor. He really knows what he's talking about and is open to answering questions; so don't be afraid to ask. Econ isn't the easiest subject, but the online homework does help you understand the material better. He also gives out a review exam and topics to know before the midterms and exams, which is really helpful.
Prof Kelly was a really great Econ professor. He explains topics really well and you can ask him as many questions you want; he encourages it! Some complained that he confused the topics a lot, but with subjects like econ, you also have to put in the work to understand it. There are quizzes every week so make sure you prepare. Great guy.
An easy A. Just go to class and take some notes so that everything becomes like a breeze. Would definitely take him again.
Kelly was relatively easy, he teaches a big lecture hall so he does the best he can. He lectures in class and tries to relate it to real life examples, he puts up slides on the board in class. There are weekly homework assignments(harder than the tests), weekly 6 question quizzes, 2 mid terms, and a final. Overall not bad, just read the textbook.
Teaches the first part of the class(easy if you study) really slow and the rest(NOT easy) really fast. I think that's more the departments fault than his though. Easy grader but you NEED TO STUDY. I wouldn't take him again. Impossible to reach out of class and takes forever to respond to email. Talk to him in person. Announces exams 1 week before.
He knows his stuff and is normally good with lectures, but sometimes he is just really disorganized and makes the same errors I'd imagine a first year teacher would make. But he is really understanding! I just wish he solidified how he ran his class more. Not sure if I'd take him again but he's an okay choice
I have him for the Econ 1001 lecture. He's a nice guy and sometimes funny. There are 300+ people in the lecture hall so you probably want to sit close-ish to the front. Might be hard to focus. He has a very loud voice. Lectures consist mostly of powerpoint slides which are also on canvas. He goes kinda fast sometimes so pay attention
Prof Kelly is a really good professor, however he is easily distractible. The exams are somewhat difficult, but if you take proper notes and use the book they are manageable.
Professor Kelly was a good Macro professor but his classes were lecture heavy and were sometimes confusing. There is weekly homework assignments and quizzes in recitation, 3 tests, and a final.
I had Professor Kelly for Honors Macroeconomics. He was an adequate enough teacher but he was very unorganized and prone to going on tangents. The content taught during his lectures didnt seem to align with the test material very often, but the impact of this was minimal considering the tests were fairly easy. Nice guy, but overall meh professor.
He is a nice guy but honestly, he should not be teaching an undergraduate course. I am not an economics major but I was required to take this course for my major. The course relies heavily on tests and he does not teach his own powerpoints nor does he make his own tests, everything is off of Pearson. He isn't very direct and is super unorganized.
Professor Kelly was fantastic. He made Econ bearable and his grading system was fair. In a class like Econ youre going to have to do some self studying if you want to succeed; the textbook was very useful in this regard. Likewise the exams were easy if you studied and the class as a whole was a tough, but achievable, A if you put in some effort.
He is a nice dude, but he SHOULD NOT be teaching this course. I was required to take this class for my major. I tried to email him when needed for help and he didn't respond my email back. Since moving to online class because of the Covid-19 lockdown, he barely teach anything like NOTHING. He is disorganized and a mess. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS.
He teaches this course as if you already know economics. So if you know economics, its an easy A. But, if you dont you will really struggle. He is really open to giving help but it still is a very hard class. Nice guy though.
Extremely lecture heavy and moves really fast. You're gonna have to read the textbook. My recitation teacher always cut class 20 minutes early and wasn't helpful at all. Homeworks every week and 2-3 tests. Everyone in my class barely knew what they were doing. His class is not impossible, but I failed along with a lot of other kids I knew.
So disorganized and unresponsive. He left us in the dark when class went online and didnt post when due dates on the syllabus passed. I would understand if there was problems because of corona but he emails us the last week of class saying we have a final and paper, worth 40% of grade now due during final. All he gave us is yt vids to review. Run.
He taught the material well and encouraged us to ask questions. Quizzes every class and he used those to verify attendance. We also had study guides for tests. There was homework every week, but it was fine because he gives like 3 attempts to do a problem so easy grades. You need an access code! If you take him, take the night class once a week.
He's not a bad teacher but he moves really fast in lecture, he's hard to keep up with. Econ sucks so he tries his best and you can tell he really knows his stuff. Attendance isn't mandatory since its lecture. Class is based mainly on tests so if you bomb them its really hard to pass. Just pay attention and study for tests and you'll be fine.
Put in 6 hours a week, read the textbook (#1 most underrated resource), attend every lecture and you're golden. He's a very dynamic professor and does a great job explaining topics during lectures but you need to take notes! If you are confused READ THE TEXTBOOK! It actually does a great job explaining concepts and isn't as dry as your typical text
You can tell he is new to teaching because the lectures are disorganized. There is a much of homework on useless material. My money might as well have went to Khan Academy for helping me get through his class.
Get another teacher
As someone who has taken econ in the past, Kelly did NOT make this an enjoyable experience. Very little accessibility, the tests/midterms are worth a colossal part of your grade (Oh btw HE REFUSES to curve no matter the case), & homework was difficult and took a while but our class had a study group that would help a lot (suggest you do the same).
Kelly is simply one of the worst teachers who I've ever bumped into at Temple. Although we were online this semester, this teacher literally refuses to be contacted by students, and even over-relies on Pearson to teach his students - solely because he refuses to. His "lectures" are ones that do not fully prepare students for exams either. Beware!!
Worst teacher Ive had in my 14 years of education.
Kelly is beyond disorganized. He won't post weekly material until 3 days before the homework is due. He is not good at explaining the weekly content and it is overall a mess. He is very chill but he is not fit to teach, feel like he got his teaching license yesterday. Weekly homework and quizzes with midterm and final; nothing unreasonable.
Professor Kelly is super knowledgeable, the stuff he teaches is useful and his teaching style can be described as simple and direct.
i liked him as a person very nice and tries to explain idk his method of teaching didn't work for me very large class of 300 gives extra credit quizzes every week opens at 3 i took the online class 2 midterms and finals are on pearson ta aren't rly that helpful the book helps a little bit but focus on his ppt & lectures they are the same
Great professor. Sometimes there was a lot of work, depending on the topic. Same plan every week, a set of homework problems and a quiz on Friday afternoons. You have to pay attention in class in order to understand the topic.
Kelly was alright. Boring lectures and recitation wasn't much help. Pearson for $75 which is mad annoying tbh. HW and Quiz every week.
Comparably one of the worst professors I have taken. His teaching style is inefficient for most students, especially in lecture sizes nearing 200. There is homework and a quiz each week, you definitely have to read the textbook to actually grasp the material. This class was not a fun experience at all, unless you are willing to self-study. A lot.
Very tedious set-up. Lecture is one day a week with one recitation following. Recitation was pointless as it just went over the homework. Quiz every week with homework due every week. Will not curve grades no matter what. Gave us two bonus opportunities that were based on if a certain amount of people came to class and had their cameras on.
Hes nice, one homework one quiz each week and he drops the lowest scores Bot very organized but I dont feel its a problem, he tries his best to help outside the class
If you're thinking about taking this with Kelly, think again. His lectures are a total waste of time and he is unwilling to curve for any reason.
one week in his class and i already can tell he cant teach. lectures all so disorganized and it seems like he has trouble explaining things. i took microecon last semester, and he is nothing compared to my previous professor....
kelly is a chill guy but this class is just awful. his lectures don't help and econ itself is just difficult for most people. recitations were just a waste of time but you had to show up for quizzes every week. idk if there's a better professor out there or if the class content itself is just bad
Kelly is fine. He's not the best, but he's nowhere near the worst. He's a little disorganized and struggles to explain things, but attending his lectures is definitely helpful. People here are saying the recitations are useless, but honestly they helped me more than the lectures themselves. Just attend class and ask questions and you'll be fine.
You could probably find better. His lectures are boring and he gets distracted easily. Honestly they taught me nothing. But the workload is light. However the quizzes annoyed me because they were only six questions so they mattered. If you have no other option you will be fine but definitely not the best out there.
James is fine, the entire class goes as follows with homework due at the start and then a quiz and then a lecture. It is fine, but is very boring. If you can find another professor that's better take it, but if you're stuck with this class you will be fine.
Avoid this professor at all costs. This guy will sit and lecture the whole 3 hours, then expect you to know the material for the quizzes the next class. You will 100% be teaching yourself.
Professor Kelly's lectures are very informative but you have to pay attention to every second or it's easy to get lost. For me, the in-person recitations were insanely helpful, and going to the office hours is a good idea. If you're good at math, you'll have an easy time remembering all of the equations. Just do the homework and pass the quizzes.
He underteaches the important stuff and over-teaches the simple concepts. Pretty boring class.
Do NOT take professor Kelly. He will change the weight of the grades 3 weeks before the semester ends, leaving you to scramble to bring it up with only two remaining assignments besides the final.
Don't know why he gets so much hate. His lectures are boring, but you don't really need to pay attention in class to do well. He posts 10 minute videos of him explaining concepts he spends 3 days explaining in class. Watch those and you're set for quizzes and exams.
Chill guy and honestly a good person. He overexplains easy concepts, and it gets boring, but he definitely knows economics really well. Assignments are super straightforward and quizzes and exams are straight from his powerpoints. Literally just watch the 5-10 minute videos of him going over the powerpoints he posts on canvas.
2 thing I heard going into this class: James Kelly is really hot but he's a terrible teacher. I found both of those statements to be false. He's not the best teacher but really is not as bad as everyone says he is. All of his assignments/exams/quizzes are straightforward. I didn't go to class but did well watching his videos on canvas
Hes a nice guy but not a great professor. Doesn't really explain things well and doesn't answer emails. I had to study on my own to do well in the class. You get homework once a week and weekly quizzes. Lectures are pointless but you have to go because of attendance. The final was pretty hard and I feel like he didn't really prep us well for it.
Kelly is super caring and wants the best for his students. You definitely need to work for your grade, but that's partially just econ in general and not his fault. I do not think he deserves some of the bad reviews he gets... I think that is more people blaming him for not understanding the material in class without putting the extra work in.
James is a prof who really strives to help his students succeed. It's a big class and is mainly taught through PowerPoint, but if you pay attention, he's pretty good at explaining the concepts of the course. It's clear that he tries really hard for his students and while not the best student, I felt extremely encouraged to learn the material.
Super nice guy but an overall okay professor. Doesn't explain the actual topics super well but there's a lot of helpful videos on youtube. Weekly quizzes in recitation but they're only 10 points and the TA's practically give you the answers before hand. 3 exams all semester that are pretty difficult and require you to study.
Super nice and awesome guy but not the best professor. Spends a lot of class going over housekeeping items and not the best at explaining concepts. Also seems to have adhd. His thoughts jump around all class as he tries to wrap it up. workload is not too much but tests are hard and require conceptual understanding. econ just sucks. nice guy but eh
Professor Kelly honestly had a great class and I learned a lot, however the amount of homework really stressed me out. Even practice assignments which he said would not be part of the final grade ended up being so, and really hurt my final grade in the end. His lectures are also not very entertaining, it's really hard to focus in them.
1 hw per week and 3 test for the year. Macro itself is hard, he is a good teacher who is passionate about his job. Weekly recitation, but the TAs basically give you the answers for the quizzes.
Professor Kelly is great I just lowkey suck at macro but he explained concepts really well. He is really relaxed about everything and super friendly. Weekly homework is pretty easy but quizzes and problem sets can get trickly. Only 3 exams that aren't cumulative which is amazing. Definitely wish I could have him again for micro
Basically if you're the type of student to not try you will not succeed. Lecture heavy. Weekly quizzes.
His class is very traditional, he does the lecture and gives you a homework assignment and a quiz every week and you move on. The homework isn't very hard, and the quizzes are only 6 questions. As long as you do your work it's an easy course and he's a very pleasant teacher to have.
Overall a decent professor. If you're REALLY academically driven, then you'll do well. There's homework every week along with weekly recitations where quizzes are taken. Recitation is mandatory and he also takes attendance in class on random days. The exams require lots of studying and they're usually curved.
I had Dr. Kelly for Macro Principles this past fall. He was a great professor and made the concepts easy to understand. As long as you pay attention in class and do all the homework, you will be fine. The friday recitation sessions also really helped me
Good teacher, he can lead into economic subjects do deeply and sometimes he might be confusing. But he also is a very good and caring teacher who wants his students to succeed. Lecture heavy, but overall structure is easy to understand.
Dr. Kelly gives good lectures and his class is very predictably structured--once weekly MyLab hw and a 6 question quiz every Friday. He's accessible outside class and will go through anything you want him to in class.
It is a difficult topic to learn but he makes it just a little easier
Good person. Very nice and easily reachable. Class was hard but if you need to take this class. He is not bad
He was okay, I guess not the best at explaining the material because he rambles a lot and goes on tangents. The quizzes were sometimes kinda hard too, but as long as you do the homework and pay attention to the lectures, you'll be okay
He is very smart and knows the material like the back of his hand but, he does not do a very good job at teaching it in a way that students will understand. All lecture based and weekly quizzes. But, he's a really nice guy and cares about his students.
Professor Kelly is a great teacher, and he cares about his students. I took the class twice because the first time I didn't put as much effort in and got lost in the sauce. But once I took it more seriously, it wasn't too bad. The tests are cumulative, I had to constantly stay on top of the readings to grasp his lectures but he gives great help.
Nice guy, but it's hard to keep up with his lectures sometimes. As long as you do the homework and keep up with the slideshows and textbook you should be okay. He tries to help his students the best he can, and there are opportunities for a grade boost.
The Teachers assistants are terrible. Although Mr Kelly is a good professor the helpers were subpar
Professor Kelly teaches you exactly what you need to know for the exams, work might be difficult to grasp at times but he is a good teacher and is really helpful.
Dr. Kelly is so sweet and genuinely wants you to learn. Sometimes it was difficult to keep up with the lectures, but overall they were helpful and he made them engaging. 10/10 recommend his class, especially if you struggle with understanding concepts.
he was a great teacher and his lectures were easy to follow. if you read the textbook and do the homework you should be prepared for the tests. the tests where also pretty easy and very similar to the homework and quizzes taken in class.
A professor who cares about your outcome and understanding. Very understanding with attendance
James Kelly is BY FAR AND AWAY my favorite professor at Temple, not only is he a GREAT human being, he is a great teacher as well. He is the perfect balance of what a professor should be, knowledgable but also A GOOD PERSON. He will help you in any way he can, very understanding and caring, and very smart. The BEST professor at Temple.
Professor Kelly makes the material engaging, but his lectures can be tough to keep up with. Doing the homework, using the textbook, and checking out study tools like unstuckstudy really help. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class.
The class was a heavy lecture and he made everything easy to understand, but a very tough grader. As long as the work is done it's easy and exams not as difficult as expected. Would take again.
Not too hard of a professor and didn't make the material too hard to understand. He was my first business professor, being that I had a business minor at the time and later switched it to my major. He was a good entry into business studies through economics, and I never felt too lost.
Great guy. Assignments and exam are somewhat easy. Only problem is his exam reviews don't match the actual exam. Exam reviews are like level 1 difficulty while actual exam is like level 100 with extra critical thinking. Reviews should be similar but his reviews are brain dead work
Prof. Kelly is one of the best professors I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and is always willing to go the extra mile to help out. Truly an amazing guy.
He is a nice person and really genuine.I felt like he is a very passionate guy and loves economics, but it was hard to follow sometimes.I felt like I only learned from going to a TA's office hours and getting help on the homework, or using AI to explain the concepts.Professor Kelly really wants to help everyone succeed! will always come back to him.
I liked this class a lot. I'm quieter, but he made it easy to engage with the lectures and the TAs are all great. I'm leaving my Business major but I've decided to take Micro just to have his lectures again.
Very energetic and genuine person. Good amount of work and material, however if you attend lectures he tries to explain everything in multiple ways, so as many people can understand as possible. He also has videos of him giving every lecture on canvas, so you can afford to re-teach yourself or not attend. (idk why u would skip, he is so awesome)
I expected Kelly to be a good prof based on the reviews. But whenever he says there is lots to cover, he wastes nearly ten minutes of class talking about other stuff rather than directly going to the material. Then he rushes with it sometimes. Lectures are meh, difficult to follow along so it's best you self study them. Would not take Kelly again.
