you basically teach yourself

never any structure in what he teaches. very uninvolved!
should teach graduate studies
contempt for those who need help most
Abstract thinker. Many people don't get it.
very hard marker!

I dropped this course because I couldn't deal with this man!
This man is evolving backwards. I have met slugs with more personality
Ketchen is great proff!! Those other people don't know what they're talking about. They must have failed.
Ketchen`s a good person and he`s not as bad as these people are saying. They`re just being babies by saying stupid things about his not being fit to teach animals. He`s hard but he`s always there for his students, no matter what!
He is a cruelly hard and difficult teacher who seems to have contempt for those in his class who need the most help. I would advise other students to avoid this little man.
Great personality, hard to understand the abstrat teaching.
the people who rate him on this site are being extremely unfair. Jim has the highest expectations for his students. In 3rd and 4th year courses it is expected that students should be able to think on their own. he is tough, but fair. funny guy too!
I have nothing but scathing criticism for this so called teacher. He is not helpful, mean-spirited, and, in my opinion, a waste of time. AVIOD like the plague.
Jerk!
Too sarcastic. Cruel with students. Does not like to teach and makes you feel like stupid. Avoid him like plague.
Unfit to teach dumb animals
I have to laugh. Yes he seems arrogant, and maybe he is. At the end of the day though he is a good prof and an understanding, empathetic man. In fact, more so than many profs. He can dish the challenge out but he can also take it.
Make no mistake ... rocks have more empathy than this grinch. Compassion and engaging students can be a great way to reach students and foster learning. BUT ... NOT with big bad Jim.

He's the type of prof that if you work for him - your mark reflects it...likewise if you slack and show no signs of interest or comprehension...you're mark is also representative of your efforts! An extremely fair guy!
I did not enjoy his course one bit

Boy, I did not like this teacher

I did not like him, I'm sure the feeling was mutual
I find it hard to believe this man is considered an educator

Well, it seems I'm not the only one.

Do not take his class
widely disliked by students including me
On Sabbatical ... thank you!

I had a very negative experience
If you are willing to learn, he is willing to help. Very nice, great guy if you give him a chance. Can be very funny.
Great instruction
I won't take a course with this teacher again.
I found he was contemptuous of the students who needed his help the most. I very unpleasent environment for learning.
I felt alienated
Bummer
Through Envision: Horrible readings. Warning!: More Philosophy than law. Be prepared for a lot of writing w/ the 4 mark questions. Follow all instructions in binder for great mark! :D Doesn't help students who ask for it.
I don't know why people have rated him so poorly, I think he is a pretty nice guy and not a bad teacher. I wasn't interested in taking intro to legal reasoning, but it seems to be my favourite class so far this year!
It takes him a long time to do questions and he often gets then wrong. He isn't able to keep control of his class, so he doesn't get through his lessons. He tries really hard to make it enjoyable. But if you don't get iyou are in trouble.
He's a very nice and easy going prof.
much better in legal reasoning than in his first year course. got 62 last year and i'm batting an 81 so far this year. BEATS ME.
Dr. Ketchen is very conceptual in his approach. However, if you do the readings, his classes are most insightful and enlightening.
I would advise against taking courses with this teacher. I felt he was "petty"
Through Envision. Wow so many dry, bland & uninspiring readings accompanied by too many long tedious questions. Does not tell you where or why you lost your marks on your assignments, so when it comes to the exam you still won't know how to improve your answer.
Ketchen's classes aren't easy, but he makes them interesting and is a lot of fun.
Unfit to teach animals
The material itself is pretty dry, but he's a good teacher and a pretty nice guy. I've done well in a few of his classes.
BEWARE ... I say no more
I remember a burdensome sadness
Just a horrible person and teacher
Very hard to like, aloof, seems to have contempt for students that were struggling, but they needed his help the most. Don't take a course with this anti-teacher.
Ketchen is a fun prof. He is interested in what he teaches which makes the class more interesting. It's important to remember that his background is in philosophy - so make sure your papers go a little deeper into the subject and he'll give you a good mark.
Absolutely horrible prof. Teaches was too fast; it is a struggle to keep up to him while trying to take notes. Gets very annoyed with and insults students who ask for greater detail. Tells everybody they'll fail the class if they don't buy the course text, which costs $90+ and is a bunch of photocopies...and then doesn't use it once! Avoid him!
Clearly more interested in being Union President than teaching students a thing. Often late or absent from class without warning. You will waste time showing up to campus to find out that he is not coming on more than one occasion. Read your text and feed him some philosophical **** or wear a Led Zeppelin t-shirt, either way you will get a B.
Tough but fair.
Ketchen, well he's got a crap sense of textbook/readings since they are impossible to read and I understood more of the latin than the actualy English. Also, completely useless, good luck going to him for help, he'll laugh at you, subtley call you an idiot and give you some more unreadable articles to help you understand the other unreadable ones.
Unfit to teach dumb animals.
After reading many of these reviews I was nervous to take his class but I was pleasantly surprised. Some cons are that the readings are extremely difficult and he had a hard time staying on track but I also found him funny and relate-able and a completely fair marker.
He keeps the mood light which is nice but he often gets off topic and rambles.
I found Ketchen to be relatable, funny and a fair marker. The course is definitely not an easy A, but if you stay on top of your work, study and don't procrastinate, you'll be fine. He does tend to ramble off a lot though so make sure you're only writing out the key information that he mentions in his lectures.
He's very unorganized in his thinking and lectures. He's kinda funny but his ramblings go on. You're honestly better off to just read the material.
Ketchen is looking for students to engage in the material with him, laugh at the cheesy jokes he loves to make and make a point for him to get to know your name you are more likely to have a good experience. He hates long lectures especially if he teaching an afternoon class. You have to find the readings yourself rather than him tell you.
James Ketchen is an excellent teacher. You absolutely need to be in class and following the lecture and he is always willing to clarify is necessary. He makes his material interesting if you give it a chance. He is very fair with grading and forthcoming with assistance regarding assignment. My favourite teacher by far!
I really like Professor Ketchen, but I did not like his class. Not liking his class had nothing to do with his teaching style, I just found the content very dry. I do not recommend taking an intro law class unless you have to.
Readings required for this course were very difficult to understand - did not tell us what material Quiz 1 and 2 covered - when asked no response was given. Extremely tough course; did all readings, and extensive research and additional readings but i just found this course to be very dry and poorly executed. certain surprises on the final exam.
Rambles on a lot in lectures, and often repeats key aspects. If you pay attention to what he says during lectures, you'll do fine. Textbooks are hard to understand but did fine with simply studying notes he provided as well as notes taken during class. Was funny and tried to joke around to lighten the mood.
Hes a funny guy. His tests arent bad and the essay paper is alright. If you listen and study the notes youll be fine.
He's a funny guy, however, goes off on tangents during the lectures. You don't always realize when he says something important because he kinda rants. Take notes as much as possible, and don't just depend on the textbook because it's hard to read and understand.
Ketchen is a good guy, easy to talk to outside of class. He rambles from time to time; however, if you take notes during the lectures you'll be fine for tests/exam. Isn't the easiest of markers so be sure you understand the information to a decent extent.
probably one of the weakest professors i have had. not a bad person, but not cut out to teach. I found the lectures dry and he seems to lose track of what he is talking about half the time. Do not take unless you have to.
Ketchen is a PERFECT professor to have. He is one of the few professors who actually cares about his students. Although law is normally boring, Ketchen tries his best to make it interesting. Attendance is not mandatory either, which allows you to be independant and flexible. You are graded the effort you give. Outline/Criteria is straight forward.
First prof Ive had who empathizes with reality of life. He is willing to go the extra mile to help his students. All you need to do is communicate. Pay attention to due dates and quiz dates. He doesnt remind you. His motto: If you dont ask, you wont receive. So ask. He is generous.
Best teacher I have ever had, plain and simple. Genuinely cares for his students and is understanding of personal lives and work in other classes.
What an incredible guy, very easy marker and a genuinely nice guy.
Although a nice guy, I have taken his classes all four years of my undergrad in Law and I have not learnt a single thing. Complete waste of money, will talk about ANYTHING but legal material all term. (Last class he was talking about ghosts???) Also does not know what he's talking about. Good luck future law students lol.
I have taken classes with him all four years of my undergrad in Law and I have not learnt a single thing. He is a nice guy but honestly is not able to teach on law. COMPLETE waste of money, most classes he'll just complain about technology not working, talk about how he's doing, then end it early. Thousands of dollars and for what?
Although a nice man, he strayed entirely from the syllabus, was out of class more often then he was in it, didn't get work back in a timely manner whatsoever, and spent three lectures discussing the same minute topic that could be easily defined in 5 minutes. Honestly, a bit of a waste of money.
He is a wonderful man who is frequently humorous and approachable. His syllabus is disorganized and unhelpful, and a lot of his content is unrelated to the course description. He provides a lot of unrelated links and books, which makes it seem like a waste of time. You always feel lost, which is incredibly frustrating.
He was a great teacher who gave you everything you needed to succeed in the lectures. From textbook material to in class movies, we were graded mostly on what he presented during class. Other resources like the textbook were only to support. In this sense, participation wasn't mandatory but it was clearly important.
