Nice guy, wants his students to do well. Found him extremely helpful. I took the LOTR class and got slightly sick of hearing the same voices but if you participate a couple of times you'll do fine in the participation mark. Learn how to write a solid argument in the way he wants and you're sure to get a decent mark. Also be prepared to read A LOT!
Great guy! Very helpful and approachable. Easy to get above 70%. Only bad thing is he expects you to read alot!!
Amazing teacher! He really cares about his students, if you try for him, he will do all he can to help you.
Amazing Prof. Definetley improved my paper writing. Is always there if you need help or clarification on an essay or on the material you're reading. Sometimes uses advanced vocabulary, however at the university english level this should not come as a shock to the student. Would recommend this prof and definitely would take a class from him again!
Jed is a fantastic prof. I took the Tolkien class from him and he is completely into the subject and knows a lot about it. He really teaches you how to write good papers and I learned a lot from him. Would totally take a class from him again and recommend him to everyone. Attend class, do your reading and you will do well.
Great Guy isn't afraid to hear new ideas, easy to get along with, really cares about the students... and he will not fail you no matter what!
Jed is a phenomenal professor. His lectures are intriguing, and he teaches literature he loves, so the result of this is that he is passionate, well informed, and makes you excited to come to lecture. Jed is always approachable and cares about student success. If you want to actually enjoy English, take classes with him!
WHOA. NO. He is a terrible prof. English should not be pure lecture and no discussion. He gives the illusion that he cares about his students, but he'll take a month to give back your essays. And his critiques are not helpful, just mean. It's his too specific way or the highway. If you want to keep your self-esteem, don't take this class.
He is the best english professor i have ever had,i love his honesty!...i think i have a crush on him :s
i love this professor
I took Jed's Tolkein class. I loved the class content. It was heavy on the reading but It was expected because you are reading LOTR. To be completely honest, I have a little crush on him. It's either his knowledge or his easy going personality. Whatever it is, I wish I could take more classes from him or maybe just go for coffee with him and chat!
Jed is a good professor. He gives thorough directions and ensures everyone understands a concept. He sometimes uses big words, but I think its good to expand vocabulary of students. You get 10% for just showing up every day so thats pretty sweet. He marks quite difficult but gives proper feedback to fix such mistakes in the future.
great prof. super helpful, gives you feedback on everything you do. get 10% just for showing up. slighty hard marker, but tells you whay you need to do to improve. overall fantastic. my favorite prof
I really liked Jed. I had him for English 100, and I think he prepares you well for future english courses. If you aren't an English major or minor I probably wouldn't recommend him - go for an easier class. But all in all, he's great! Very humble and level headed.
Jed was an amazing teacher. He's definitely not the easiest when it comes to work, but he's super helpful if you need anything. Definitely just a chill guy who is super level headed and speaks from experience. NOTE He marks on attendance, but if you go it is definitely helpful!
He was a great professor, and you can tell he loves what he teaches. Attendance marks, and quiz marks are easy- show up and do the readings and youll have 110% on those. His midterm, inclass evaluation and final are fair. He tells you the questions to let you prepare. His essays might bring your grade down. He marks them very thoroughly and harsh.
AWESOME professor. I thought I was going to hate English, but he managed to make it enjoyable. He gives very in-depth feedback and tells you exactly what your work is lacking. I went back and took 110 from him as an elective, that's how much I enjoyed his class!
requires a lot of work, but he's very specific and helpful.
Great prof but very demanding in the work load. Very fair and offers improvements on your work. He teaches you to write strong essays and looks at your view point while grading. The final essay is fun because you can write about anything that relates to the novel. I would take an english class with him even though I hated all my previous english.
Amazing professor, really helped me to understand how to write properly. He marks hard but you learn how to write so much better. Definitely knows his stuff.
Awesome teacher! He is a hard marker, but writes a huge comment on the back to everything to tell you what you need to improve! I would take his English class again in a heart beat! At the beginning, there is a LOT of readings that are hard to keep up with, but he goes over everything in class and makes sure you know what you're doing! Awesome!
Jed is not the prof for you if you want easy grades. He is a hard marker, and a self described technophobe. The course was not available on UR Courses what-so-ever. This being said, Jed is extremely knowledgable in his field, and is a wonderful prof for anyone intensely interested in english. But be warned, you will NOT receive your best mark here.
Holy begesus.. Jed Lacoste is by far the hardest marker i've ever had. He is very intense in his marking and will go through it completely and thoroughly.. BUT he is the best English professor I have ever and will ever have! Always available to help you out if your having trouble, but is not very keen on electronics! Only take if you like English!
He is extremely knowledgeable. He knows what he is teaching, BUT the class is not easy. He is a hard marker. If you expect to get 90, you'll get 60. However, he really helps you to improve your writing. If you need a high mark in English 100, don't take this class from him. His class is really interesting to attend though!
I use English as a second language. I have a science major. At first, I took this class because it suited my schedule, then I wanted to drop class as soon as I knew my textbook was The Lord of The Rings. However,I learn so much from this class as a few words can not be described. This class will change your life in a meaningful way.
Jed is probably the best professor I've ever had. He is incredibly passionate, very helpful, and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure his students have a meaningful experience in his class. He is a very thorough marker, but seems to give credit for personal improvement. Be prepared to do all reading. If you ever see a class with him, TAKE IT.
Jed is an amazing professor who is passionate to both teach and learn new things. His class is the best Ive had at university and I would highly recommend his Tolkien English!
Jed is a boss. He marks hard, but makes the class worthwhile. Jed taught me many things that I will take with me throughout university. I definitely recommend taking his class.
Jed is an incredible professor. His lectures are interesting, informative, and highly entertaining. While some say he is a hard marker, I think there are ample opportunities to make up lower essay grades with his super easy quizzes and bonus attendance marks. If you have a chance to take a class from Jed then do it. You won't regret it.
Jed is a decent guy, but doesn't seem to have much confidence in himself when he teaches. He marks way too hard & gives comments that seem as though he is trying to boost himself up. He's great if you need an extension, but will bash even the best essay. If you feel like you're a confident writer, he will assure you you're not. I do not recommend.
He marks his essays hard. There is never a right answer and he really picks them apart so don't try to BS anything! His final was easy and easy to prepare for but be prepared for a lot of writing.
If you have a chance, TAKE HIS CLASS. There are a lot of readings and he marks tough but fair. He's an engaging and extremely cool prof! He's also very understanding and helpful to those who struggle with anything!
This guy is extremely passionate and interested in the themes and content that he lectures on. It's refreshing to have a prof be passionate about his work and to support his students. He will give extensions and meet to talk about essays, very understanding. He marks hard because he really wants you to put out your best writing. I'd recommend him!
Take this class!
Take any class you can with JED. He is amazingly passionate and his lectures are never boring. Plus the tattoos popping out of his button up shirt and love for any kind of medal music makes him even better. He understands the students and is always very fair and reasonable.
Professor LaCoste is an incredibly knowledgeable professor. He is a fair marker and is willing to help his students achieve success. Make sure you do the readings on time and attend class. If you put effort into the course, you cannot go wrong.
This guy is ridiculously good with English. If you want to improve your essay-writing skills, he's your man. Just be prepared to read lots and attend all of the lectures, as part of your mark is based on these things.
Don''t take any class with him he''s knowledgeable but bullsht when comes to grading and grades
Jed is very passionate and it shows in his astounding lectures. He strongly encourages critical thinking and accepts when people challenge what he thinkssays. He is very open-minded and totally real. Phenomenal feedback (very helpful), he wants to see you succeed. Very fair. Demands participation. Makes time for students. Jed is very positive.
good prof. a lot of reading which is a must because he does short multiple choice quizzes on all of the selections he assigns. he also does take home exercises which are basically grammar sheets which can be pretty tough. all of his essays are fairly graded and he will literally write you a page of feedback. hates cellphones. would recommend.
Really great professor! You need to go to class or you won't pass. His lectures are clear and he provides all the information you need for the final. He seems to really care about his students and helps a lot during his office hours. He marks essays soooo hard! He puts a crazy amount of comments on essays so you can improve for next time.
Jed has to be the best English teacher I have ever had. Never really liked English classes until this one! He is extremely passionate as well as knowledgeable about his course. He is very well spoken and his lectures are really interesting. You will have to attend class but you will love it, and you will have to work hard on your essays!
Jed and James LaCoste are the same person and that confused me. Jed is an awesome professor but he expects a lot from his students. He is a very tough grader and you have to go to class to understand what he wants. His lectures are really fun though so that makes it easier.
DONT EXPECT TO PASS HIS CLASS AT ALL IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER,THEN.....I AM ABOVE AVERAGE ? WOW, THEN, YOU KNOW HOW TOUGH HE IS, AND HOW AWSOME HE IS!!! TAKE NOTES, DO YOUR READING, AND DON'T MISS HIS CLASS !!!
Jed is an awesome guy, willing to work with his students and grades fairly, you MUST use his feedback or else he will mark you much harsher than he otherwise would.
If you can't do heavy reading, this isn't the class for you, but if you think you can handle it, he offers the most entertaining, insightful and enjoyable class I've taken so far.
Jed is an amazing professor. He is always willing to meet up and discuss any questions you may have. His class makes you work for the mark but it is worth it. The readings in this class varied but overall very interesting. His lectures don't drag, and the time actually flies by. As long as you do the readings and attend class you should pass.
Jed is probably one of my favourite professors so far. If you are taking Engl 100/110 take them both from him I wish I had You will learn how to write properly and critically analyze text, which helps you overall in your degree (and what english is supposed to do, but this is the only prof/teacher that taught me this). 10/10 would learn from again
Jed is my favorit prof. Will be taking his 110. He gives good feed back and if you go to his office hours he will really help you out. He has taught me so much about writing essays and proper grammar. Although he was a tough grader, I still feel he gave everyone an equal shot. Jed was also very dedicated and you can tell he loves what he teaches.
Jed is a fun interactive professor. His lectures go by so fast because he is really passionate about what he teaches and goes over everything you need to know. If you show up to class and take notes you will do fine. He is a tough grader though so be aware. However, if you take his feedback and apply it, he really appreciates it.
James LaCoste likes to be known as "Jed." He seems difficult and petty at first, but don't drop the class right away. Jed has turned out to be my favourite lecturer. He works above the call-of-duty to ensure each individual in his class is learning. He remembers each student, by name. Be prepared to read, and learn a lot. Best class EVER!
You will know that hes a tough prof of the first day. However Jed is also the best teacher i have ever had personally
For non-english majors, do not take Jed's class. be prepared for the toughest ENGL 100 class of your life. Midterm and final is reasonable but marks super hard and expects a lot from you. If you're looking for a slack english, this is not the one.
I took his LOTR English 110 and he did an awesome job! He is funny and VERY caring about all of his students, and he sets aside lots of time out of class for students. It does require a strong reader though!
The prof will make sure you do not get a high mark. When you hand in an essay he will give you a ridiculously bad mark even though any other prof would give you a better mark. Gives you easy midterm but will rip you off for marks. DO NOT TAKE HIS ENGLISH CLASS.
This prof is on a power trip. Plays mind games with his students. Clearly doesn't set up students to be successful in his class unless you play his games. Teach because you want to teach the students. The crazy low marks you give mess up student averages and bring down self esteem. I'm sure the "awesome" remarks left on this site are from him......
This prof is awful. He will make your average drop tons because he thinks hes helping the students by given by them bad marks for good work
If you are not very good at English don't take him. Look for someone else, tough grader and often made students feel dumb. Also would constantly go over class time because of dragging on and rambling. Intense man.
I've had more enjoyable surgeries.
Jed is a terrible teacher. His lectures are hard to follow because he rushes through the course material. There are three essays, many grammar take home exercises, lots of reading and quizzes on every new piece of literature. He is a tough marker but does give good feedback on essays.
Honestly, Jed didn't give a great first impression. His lectures could get a little off course and confusing. Ultimately, his grading criteria was clear, he gave excellent feedback on essays, and he was extremely passionate about what he taught. He also genuinely cares about the students that want to be there.
Jed comes off as a pretty interesting and scary guy with a lot of ideas. However he is caring for his students and generally interested in their success. He marks quite hard but gives very good feedback and if you respect him, he will respect you. Take Jed if you wanna learn how to write a paper and are willing to put in some effort.
one of my favourite profs of all time. he is a tough marker but clear and precise and responds to your essays with an essay on how to improve. his lectures are very interesting and he is passionate about his students success and the material. the students who don't pay attention or talk and text during class tend to fail. also he is easy to talk to
The best professor I have had up to this point in my university career. Genuinely cares about you succeeding, actually visibly affected when you don't excel. One hundred percent recommend!
He is the worst prof I have ever had. He had outbursts in class and criticized assignments in front of the entire class. He would become hostile when students challenged his ideologies and would make students uncomfortable. He is a tough marker but it is possible to do "well" if you consider 60's acceptable marks.
Jed is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend taking his course. He is by far one of my favorites, and if he ever decides to teach other courses, I will gladly take them without question. He's honest about how he grades and is blunt about how you will do right from day one if you do not come to class or engage in the material. He is amazing.
He is very entertaining. He gives very direct and detailed lectures. He will break down his marking so you know exactly what to do. He is also very helpful when you attend his office hours.
Jed has a tough exterior and can be intimidating to a new student. Stay in his class after the drop date and learn who he really is- a softie with a PASSION for English. Yes you are expected to read lots and pay attention, and your first grade may be BAD. However his feedback is valuable and if you respond to it accordingly your grade will improve.
JED is my favourite teacher I've ever had and the best at his job. He marks really hard but with good reason. Every essay I wrote came back with a page of typed feedback. He has had such a big impact on my life and writing so I highly recommend his classes. JED has given me a deeper appreciation for and understanding of English.
Jed is hands-down the most intimidating prof I've ever had. He wants you to work hard and learn lots, and he really knows his stuff. His class was demanding and required an intense effort but I've never learned so much from one class. He is very willing to help you to succeed and gives amazing, thorough criticism that you can apply. Great prof.
Jed is easily the best prof I've ever had. While he is intimidating at first, he is extremely interesting and passionate about his work. I don't recommend skipping a lecture, but they are very enjoyable so it shouldn't be difficult. Don't be discouraged by a bad mark, he will help you and set you up for success.
Jed may come off as a terrible professor, but he's just very passionate about English. He gives very good feedback on your essays that are actually helpful. The only reason I would not take this class again because he is a very hard marker, but if you want to challenge yourself and improve on your essays, take Jed. Make sure your on his good side.
Great professor. He makes his classes very interesting. It is not a heavy course and he makes his instructions and expectations very clear. Gives very detailed feedback on assignments. Make sure you go to class or else you will likely miss something important.
Professor Lacoste is an amazing professor and I would gladly take his class again. He is very passionate about the subjects he covers in lecture and is willing to help each student succeed one on one in his office hours. Do not take his feedback lightly, make notes and use the feedback to your advantage. I highly recommend taking his class!
Mr. LaCoste is fantastic. The grading is hard and he certainly makes you work for it. he goes above and beyond to give feedback that is useable and polite. If you have any concerns or questions, ASK. He is more than happy to have a discussion about any issues. If you have any problems within the class let him know. Truly cares about his students.
This professor is great! He is very passionate about what he teaches, and he gives amazing, helpful feedback on all assignments, but these assignments are definitely not easy. He made English fun in lectures, and he cares about each of his students! Email him and attend office hours for help because assignments are hard, but he is super helpful!
DO NOT take his class if you dont have a 100% grip on the English language and just about every writing style. He expects you to already be a professional writer, leaves all the actual work with you and just makes a scene during lectures. After taking another English class, Ive realized that he is a very demeaning teacher.
Super intense class, you usually had a chapter every couple days and was a very hard marker on essays. If you take this class make sure you go to office hours if you struggle. Nice guy but his class was the most stressful one yet.
He is a good teacher, cares about his students, but his marking is extremely hard. He tries to help but it doesnt work much. Again, good guy, but the hardest marker I have EVER SEEN! Almost failed/ did fail because of his hard marking. Most of the time, it doesnt make sense. Dont take this class, Im warning you.
He goes over class time he doesnt care about anyone elses time. Hes a tough grader, he doesnt give partial marks. If you care about your grade dont take his class, I dont recommend him at all. If I can give a 0 rate i would.
He's a good professor, and it's obvious that he cares about his students and his work. I enjoyed classes with him.
Jed can seem a little intimidating, and his lecture style can be overwhelming. After a while you get used to the flow and his class is quite enjoyable. That being said, it is a very difficult and time consuming course, with lots of reading. He is a very critical marker, however, from this you will actually learn something. I recommend this prof.
I took his Engl 100 class fall of 2021, and I must say, he is my favourite instructor ever. He embodies what a teacher truly is; he cares about his students. He is very, very tough, but he is always there to help students when they need it. He is very understanding, but you have to pull your weight too. You definitely won't succeed if you slack.
Professor LaCoste was a really tough grader. If English is a subject you aren't a fan of, attend his office hours and ask for help. He gives good corrections that help and is understanding if you email him about a mistake. A good professor, but very hard to have a high grade in his class.
Was so unorganized and did not care about his students needs. Would not take again.
Great prof! Lectures were super engaging and entertaining. Jed is very approachable and gives super helpful feedback if you bring him your essays to his office hours. Course is challenging but worth it. You will learn a lot from the material as well as from Jed.
Engl 110 was a class on the works of Tolkein when I took it. Reading Lord of the Rings with Jed was so great! There is a lot of reading and a good amount of work in the class but its enjoyable. Make use of office hours to get to know Jed and get super helpful feedback on your essay before you hand it in.
an irresponsible professor. fail in final, fail the entire course. He pretends to care. You will feel like he is a good professor but in the middle of the semester instead of students dropping out it's the professor dropping out. always postponing quizzes and essays. Never grades your essay on time. Only cares about himself before the students.
This prof I would never recommend to anyone who is in their first year. He rants about unprofessional things such as, and politics. Today he had quit his job AGAIN due to a complaint to the dean about his unprofessionally teaching. Only good thing about him is that he is mostly accessiable out of class. He is a hard grader.
Very honest equal grader aka Tough grader, Lectures often get out of track but is overall fine, feedback is awesome but occasionally gets hard to read.
Just do yourself a favour and take a different class.
