Great! Makes class fun, Explains everything clearly and thoroughly. There's a bit of writing in the class. Math may get a little tough, but he is ALWAYS available for help. Very caring and wants everyone to do there best so he gives a lot of opportunities to raise your grades. Tests pretty simple and PARTNER quizzes :) Exam allows index card!
Great professor. He will do anything to help you out and is always offering to stay after class. This class is fairly easy. The only weird part is that there are numerous writing prompts throughout the year (they can get annoying). Overall, this professor is very caring and obviously wants all of his students to succeed!
He is a great teacher, but his tests are kind of difficult, although he usually does curve.
Jim has seriously changed my perspective on professors I highly recommend anyone to take him!! Very helpful, will meet with you anytime, understands the demands of a college student
Jim is cool
He makes calculus pretty easy, as long as you pay attention in class. He's awesome!
Jim is a fun professor and is always willing to help you!
His way of teaching is easy to follow, but he's really specific about how he grades his tests. To do well you need to know the material AND know how he wants it to be presented on paper.
His lectures are fairly easy to follow. He gives a lot of examples and really encourages his students to attend office hours if they any help. If you do the homework (which is not graded) and pay attention in class there is no reason not to get an A in the class. I'm going to miss having him as a teacher.
One of the best math instructors I have had. It was a breath of fresh air to have an educator that not only knew the subject he was teaching very well but can give us real world examples on how to apply it. Definitely try taking calculus with Jim.
Prof. Lee, or Jim as he likes to be called, is a very patient and respectful teacher. His class was easy, but I still learned a lot. He does everything he can in order to help your grade/help you understand the material. I enjoyed his class. Would definitely take him again. (PS I never bought the textbook)
Jim is a great teacher and his lectures are easy to follow. The homework is not graded but is essential in giving you plenty of practice problems. He's very helpful and will always work with his students to aid them in success. Highly recommend.
Jim was a great guy who really cares about his student's success. He's always ready to help and his style will crack you up!
Jim was amazing. I was so scared I was not going to do well, and he was the perfect first math teacher I had coming to VCU. He is very helpful and really wants his students to succeed.
Loved this Prof!! He is super chill (he wore sandals and cargo shorts to class, dyed his beard pink in accordance with a promise to his daughter dawwww XD and teaches on a chalk board). Totally open to students if you need help. Bottom line: I actually enjoyed going to calc! He doesn't take attendance but I REALLY recommend going.
You only need the online textbook but a physical one is helpful. This guy is a great teacher and really cares about his students. He knows his stuff and teaches it well and in a way that is methodical and easy to comprehend, which is imperative for calculus.
I took Calc 200 with Lee, math is my worst subject by far and I lacked confidence going into the class. I went to his office hours A LOT and he was super helpful! He's a great teacher and will explain it to you until you get it. He's patient, and he believed in me, and if I didn't have him I probably wouldn't have gotten an A in Calculus.
Pretty simple class. He is a great professor. He is willing to help. We only had 2 tests. No final, like 6 quizzes and 2 group projects. Attendance is not mandatory but there is normally in class homework due every class.
Jim is a great professor! He used to show you everything while solving the question and if you didn't understand any part you just have to raise your hand and ask him. his class has no attendance and the HW questions are not graded, but all the quizzes are direct from HW. The 3 tests are easy, if you study them you will do well on the final.
At the beginning of every class professor James asked it anyone has a question in the homework practice question or anything else. Study and practice the HomeWork questions and you will get an A! - 10 quizzes (at least he drops 2) If you practice with 30%. 3 tests 45%. Final test 25%.
Dont take this class
Jim is an incredibly outstanding professor. He was extremely considerate and understanding to struggles I was having that semester. His style of teaching is clear and he gives students the opportunity to succeed. He is the best professor I've had at VCU, I recommend taking him if you get the opportunity. STUDY HARD FOR THE FINAL.
Jim is one of the most welcoming instructors I've had. He wants his students to do well, and doesn't hesitate to sacrifice time and effort to see you succeed. Meet him halfway, and you've got an A. It's tough because it's Calculus, he makes it manageable. Do the homework, and maybe a few extra problems when you can.
Always helpful and easy to contact, really cares about students and doesn't assign and outrageous amount of work. Great professor for those who hate or struggle with math!
Very nice guy!
Jim is literally the best professor at VCU. He has quizzes every week that are straight from the homework assignments. Do the homework, you will get an A on the quizzes. Do the homework and actually understand the concept, you will get an A on the tests. His office hours are extremely helpful, so go!!! He wants all of his students to get an A.
This is my first year at VCU and this is the best I have done in a math class since the 6th grade. Jim is a great guy and really understands what he's teaching and how to teach it. He can just sense if people aren't understanding what he's saying and will explain in again until everyone understands. My favorite professor for my first semester
This class was difficult for me, because I waited a year to take this after taking calc I. I would recommend retaking that before taking this class. He reviews by taking specific questions, so have problems from the textbook ready. Very nice guy & cares about all of his students. Definitely recommend him!! Need textbook but doesn't use MyMathLab
Jim, is the best teacher I have ever had regarding math. He has a wonderful understanding of some individuals not understanding the subject at all. He will go out of his way to make sure the students understand and comprehend what the material is. His class is explained very well and he has an amazing sense of humor that makes learning better.
Jim is great!! He's funny and easy to talk to. I am not a math person but he made it enjoyable. He will email you back and answers any questions you have for him. He explains thoroughly so you can't get anything wrong. Would definitely recommend!!
He's a wonderful professor! I'm pretty good at math, but he really helped solidify my understanding about a lot of topics that are super helpful in anything above calculus. His notes are always posted online after class and they're very well put together, but I'd still recommend going to class to prepare for his tests - they're fair but hard.
He is amazing! I failed this class in high school, but I got 100% on the first two exams in his class. Come to class and you will pass!
He is a good teacher, grades fairly. Enjoyed comming to this class, even if it was the only class that day
He explains things as simply as possible and uses great examples. He is super understanding/reasonable about late work and absences. Definitely my favorite teacher this semester.
i'm literally here just to give jim a chili
Jim was by far the greatest math professor ive ever had. He'll make you laugh and he'll make sure you fully understand the course material.
Very nice man and genuinely enjoys math. Understanding and gives good examples during lectures. Always answers questions and makes time for students. The workload isnt tough, just a couple online assignments due every Wednesday at 11:59 pm.
TAKE HIS CLASS. He is a great professor! Notes are very clear, homework is helpful, and gives extra credit if you complete the test reviews. His jokes are hilarious and so are his t-shirts.
TAKE HIS CLASS! He changed my mind on math completely. Very thoughtful lectures. Very kind and informative via office hours and emails. Homework assignments are easy. Provides 8 EC opportunity for every test (4 tests total) and really wants his students to succeed in Calculus! Haven't had a math in 2 years and still got an A. One of the best profs!
This class is very easy if you arent good at math & he does everything he can to help you pass the class.
Professor Lee makes it clear on your first class what level of math you're in and shares a brief idea of his game plan. He's extremely easy to understand and will sometimes encourage his students to ask questions or talk with table mates. Very easy to meet with him outside of class and is very determined to help you get the best grade possible.
James Lee is a great pre-calc teacher and the way he does his notes is very helpful. He jokingly told us in class to put a pepper for his reviews so I though why not.
Good teacher, little weird though but it can be fun
Jim is a wonderful teacher. He is encouraging, and gives clear, super organized lectures. There are many opportunities for extra credit and you learn a lot. Hot pepper!!!
Highly recommended! I came back to school after a long hiatus and was worried I wouldn't be prepared for this class. Jim is such a good teacher that even I, a self-professed math weakling managed to do really well. Also, the extra credit makes getting an A on tests so much easier. Jim, here's your hot pepper dude!
Jim is one of the sweetest professors I've met in college. He is always available to give extra help & will give you the benefit of the doubt in most cases. If you ever find yourself falling behind, just let him know and he will give you extra help and even extensions. Also his t shirts are hilarious
Jim is a great and enthusiastic teacher! You will learn so fast and with ease in his class. He's really wants you to understand what he's teaching. Also, you can tell he loves what he's teaching. Very glad I had him for calc!
Jim is a great person & funny. Since I took precalc in high school, sometimes I was confused at how he taught things, i.e. he doesnt teach trig using unit circle. His lectures are very heavy on writing definitions, which sometimes confused me. But overall hes a great teacher. DO THE HW! & TEST REVIEWS, you can get 8% added to a test grade for it!
Jim is an amazing professor. He works with you in order to succeed in his class and really cares about his students. His lectures are super funny too! Highly recommend this professor.
Jim is probably my favorite professor I've had at VCU. He is incredibly kind, understanding, and smart!! His passion for math is contagious and he teaches in a way that makes you see math in a different light. I got a 53% on my first Calc I test with a different professor and a 90% on Jim's 1st test in Calc II. I wish he was teaching Calc III!!
Quizzes once a week, questions based off HW + 2 tests. Overall a good enough teacher, but his grading style and strictness is pretty obnoxious and amongst the worst I've seen from any math teacher. You'll definitely walk away from this class feel like you deserved higher grades. Take Hopkinson instead for 201. But, you can skip class.
Professor Lee is incredibly understanding and caring about the students. He will work with you if you do poorly on a test. He is a harsh grader, but he is willing to give back points if you simply go talk to him and make your case. Quizzes are once a week, but are easy if you do the homework. Great professor, would definitely recommend.
Good lecturer, funny, class is setup for you to get an A if you study.
I am terrible at math and Jim is one of the only teachers to really teach math to me. He always explains each lesson in depth and always makes sure that everyone knows what is going on before we leave class. He is a fair grader, and his humor makes the class that much better. He's a great professor and a great person.
Professor Lee is one of the best professors here at VCU. He really does care about his students and explains each topic well. Go to office hours! It had been a year since I had taken Calc1. I was really worried about passing this course, but I did. Quiz questions taken from homework, and if you do well on quizzes you will do fine on tests as well.
Professor Lee is an amazing professor. He truly cares about each one of his students and he is a very straightforward professor. I am so grateful to have had him
An awesome professor, definitely wished he taught upper level math. He explains the material very clearly and make it something you can conceptualize. He is very open and willing to help you learn the material. He posts his notes online before hand which really helps. DILLY DILLY!
Professor Lee is a wonderful math teacher, he cares about his craft, he answers any and all questions, no matter how dumb they may be. He comes prepared for each class, has really helpful homework questions that are on both the weekly quizzes and the few tests. Do your work, and you pass.
I loved Jim so much. He is super understanding, and really good at explaining things if you don't understand something. The class homework is mostly on the online textbook and in the workbook you have to buy. The work is super easy and there are a lot of group projects and opportunities to get extra credit. He also makes funny jokes!
Best math class I've taken, really nice guy, wants you to succeed. Tells a joke at the beginning of every class, teaches slowly and clearly. He never took direct attendance, but sometimes he did graded classwork and I never missed class because I didn't mind going, and I knew it'd be easier to go than to teach it to myself. Offered a lot of EC too
Great class and great professor! Very clear about his expectations at the beginning of the course and sticks with them throughout the semester. He definitely finds way to make going to class fun, considering class is not mandatory. Make sure to get MyMathLab so you can do the homework. Overall a great class! Highly recommend.
Best professor I have had at VCU. Very knowledgeable and caring. MATH201 is a challenging course however if you put in effort and work hard you will get an A. Go to lecture or you will not be able to understand anything. Do the homework! Homework will help you on tests, and quizzes A LOT. First test in was the hardest so do your best in that one!
The best professor I've had so far. He's very caring and wants you to succeed. He explains things clearly so you can understand. There are quizzes once a week from homework problems, so make sure you do them. Study and remember formulas and you'll be fine.
Jim is kind of an odd guy with not wearing shoes around class and always wearing cartoon shirts, BUT hes great at what he does. If you follow along to his notes in class as he writes, youll be perfectly fine and actually learn something.
He is currently holding me hostage until I write a great review about him. Now to the review He's good and yeah he wears Jesus sandals (birkenstocks)
He is such a sweet person to let me sneak in with my roommate to her class. He makes jokes, and wears sandals like me!!!
He is hands down one of my favorite professors of all time. I started the semester off failing, then ended with an A. He was always willing to work with on what specific topics I need to go over.
unfortunately had his ALEKS version of the class. (basically all online.)The time spent on Aleks is recorded on the site but you still have to show up for "class." He usually starts class with a joke and some announcements. Whenever you need help, reach out and he is more than happy to help. Will be taking his 200 course if it doesn't use Aleks.
Nice professor who likes to make jokes to keep the class alive but I absolutely most positively hate the ALEKS program. If you can teach yourself then you will be fine but other than that he is a nice professor but the ALEKS program was absolutely horrible. I would only take his class if he is doing actual lectures other.
I loved Jim Lee, he's such a nice guy. I think he is one of the best professors at VCU. Highly recommend!
It's a shame VCU is using ALEKS full time for Pre-Calc, but Jim makes his classes fun and light hearted. Theres a lot to complain about the actual program, but Jim is an excellent professor and I wish I had him for a regular lecture. It almost made it worth it to sit through an hour and teach yourself math, which just isn't how I can learn math.
Great, funny & caring. Go to office hours, practice as much you can and he posts notes online in advance! Do his HW from Textbook which is never due but you gotta do it as he asks quiz questions from there & bases tests too. Jokes a lot which makes Calc II bearable. He replaces final with a lower test grade (3 tests, 1 final).
Jim was amazing. He knew that not everyone in the class was a "math person" and knew that most of us were just trying to fill a requirement. He noticed when I started to burn out and helped me through my test anxiety. If I had taken this class with any other professor, I would have failed. He was super funny, very kindhearted and overall amazing!
Jim is a super nice, caring person. Very helpful if you need it and gives very straightforward assessments. He is super funny and understands not everyone is a math person. He is also very understanding of schedules and outside lives.
He is very nice. Attendance is not mandatory but it is best to show up. Quizzes are based on the homework assigned in the textbook. very caring and helpful
If you're trying to get an A in Calc to fulfill the req, don't go with him. He's such a nice professor but grades so hard. I'm the type of person to not show my work in full detail, but this man will crucify your grade if you don't. Quizzes are identical to homework, but the tests are so hard. He does prepare you very well for Calc 2 though.
James Lee was a great professor. I rarely got bored in his lectures. He made calculus easy to learn. I for sure would have gotten an A in his class if it wasn't for the switch to virtual learning, but thats my bad haha. His tests are graded by points, and he makes it clear what he's looking for. His lectures give you exactly what you need for exams
I took this course over summer in 4 weeks. To be honest I was very nervous to take it in summer in only 4 weeks but Jim was amazing! You do have to work hard, but trust me he is so clear in teaching and honestly he is the best Math professor out there. Take him without thinking. His tests were straight forward and he is literally the best for Calc!
One of the best math professors
I had Jim in the spring when classes to switched online. im not a math fan but It was a super chill and easy class. He does go a bit fast so if you missed a day you would be behind, but he's also easy to reach out to. Lectures were fun with jokes here and there and sometimes he gave test answers. The transition to online did not change the quality.
Such an amazing professor. The tests and quizzes are easy as long as you do the homework. Attendance is not mandatory, but show up to class so you know what the quizzes and the tests are going to be on. Very lenient on grading. Learned more in his class than my previous few math classes. Jim is a great professor.
Honestly one of the best math professors Ive ever had. Even in Covid times youre about to get a professor that is very fair, passionate, and overall a great math teacher. Trust me you want him when taking your first higher level math
Loved Professor Lee! He is so understanding & answers emails pretty quick. Was my favorite teacher this entire semester. To be fair this was an easier class so I already understood most of the material, but he was super helpful nonetheless. Shoutout to the man!
(covid sem) i took AP calc in high school, got a 59.5 in the class and a 2 on the exam. took Jim's class and got an A. simplified concepts to make material understandable. always willing to clarify or re-explain topics. hw on pearson, four exams + the final. very helpful and understanding. quality of class was wonderful, even online. a literal gem.
TAKE JIM! I literally don't learn well in class and his way of teaching helped me a lot. Love the guy. Attendance isn't mandatory. Teach yourself stuff outside of class too, math is tough.
I’m retaking his class right now, but he’s not a bad professor by any means. I’m just very bad at math. I’m starting to understand what he’s teaching more and more. He’s a very relaxed teacher who’s always willing to help. Never keeps us past the time class ends which is very nice.
Jim is the best math professor I've ever had. He is an amazing lecturer and a hilarious person. His quizzes come from the hw, so DO IT! If you arent doing the hw you'll struggle. The tests are fair if you have studied, fair but you should have a good algebra basis. Go to his office hours before quiz/test, he's very helpful and will give you candy!
He makes math super easy to understand. I never had to study for his quizes because he would explain the topics so well in class. The homework was minimal. Only complaint is we had to teach our class a unit, but I think that's the criteria of math 131 itself rather than him. Love this guy
Jim is AMAZING. I am not good at math whatsoever but he made this class so understandable. There is consistent levels of work so you don't have to worry about doing too much. He is very understanding and accommodating to his students. He is also very passionate of what he studies and teaches. Most definitely take him.
I was god-awful at math before this class (didn't even know how to solve a 2-step equation or FOIL), but his lectures are pretty fire. Great review sessions, extremely fair grader, even better person. My expectations coming into the class were extremely low. If you still find yourself struggling, the math help center is super clutch.
Mr. Lee is nice, but I'm surprised by the amount of 5 star reviews he has. I am decent at math, but this class was like taking a foreign language. He is a tough grader and works through material too fast; he would barely stop to answer questions during lectures. Up until this point, I've been an A student; maybe he just wasn't the right fit for me.
Retook calc with him! BEST professor ever! Calculus is just a hard topic so regardless you are going to have to put in the work. Homework=Not graded Weekly Quizzes= 3 random hw Q Tests= HW, Quiz, and "this would be a good test question" in class examples.
Great professor! I would definitely recommend him to other students. As long as you do the study guide and homework you should receive a good grade in his class.
Professor Lee was one of my favorite professors this semester! Professor Lee (or Jim as he lets us call him) is extremely funny and teaches the topics very simply and the concepts were easy to understand. Tests are also very simple and never had material that we didn't go over. You should absolutely take his course if you have the chance!
Funny man! love his lectures, but you have to study a lot especially reading and doing the textbook problems. the quizzes are specific questions taken out from the textbook (homework) so do the homework and memorize it for you to pass the class. tests are easy if you study more.
Such a great guy. In my honest opinion, probably one of the best math professors here at VCU. Words can't describe how caring he is. After missing a test because of me oversleeping, he was kind enough to give me a second chance to remake it and no professor has ever done that for me. If you get the chance to register for his class, do it!
Probably the best math teacher/professor I've ever had in my life. He makes concepts so easy to understand and is super accommodating. Plus, he has a great personality and is really funny. I would 100/10 have him again as a professor.
Jim is hands-down the best math professor I ever had, do not be afraid to take his summer section of calc 2. There are quizzes every class but the questions come directly from the homework, and he reviews before each quiz. He drops at least two quiz grades and curves at the end of the semester, def make friends with classmates and study together.
He is also good at explaining things. He moves a little fast when he lectures but manageable to keep up with. Do the HW. The problems on the quizzes are taken directly from them. Attendance isn't required but it is good to go because some days he will throw heavy hints on what will be on the test. Lets you have all the time you need on tests.
Lee is great! Very knowledgeable and passionate I would recommend him to anyone needing to take calculus. Homework is not graded but quizzes are directly from it. DO YOUR HW and come to class and you should do fine. Partial credit is your bestfriend, just attempt every question. Its not easy but he doesn't make it harder than it needs to be.
He is a chill dude, his teaching style just was not for me. He is decent at explaining concepts, but for the most part you are going to be teaching yourself. The quizzes and tests are straight from the homework; however, the homework is challenging and he assigns a lot of it.
if you get a question right on a test or quiz but don't show one complete step then you get points off
Weekly quizzes, tells you when to do what homework (not graded). Opens class with homework questions, even if no one has questions he still works out a few problems he thinks are important. He made me genuinely understand what I was doing, why I was doing it, and what my exact thought processes should be when solving. Wish he taught higher calcs
A great professors at VCU, he cares about his students are is very understanding. Going to his office hours for homework questions will definitely benefit you in the long run. The class isn't homework heavy there are about 7 quizzes through the semester and 2 tests. there are practice quizzes you go work in in class before the quiz.
You have to put your part in to succeed but very nice man.
Mr. Lee was a great professor I would definitely recommend you take him for math 129 there is two homeworks per week but they do help for when you have a quiz or exam. You take weekly quizzes and every two weeks there is a test. This is due to the fact you dont have a midterm there is a final exam. Go to class do your part and use outside study.
If you need a refresher for math, this professor is not the best. Uses difficult methods and is very fast-paced. doesn't explain topics thoroughly only briefly. Math has always been easy for me but since being back from summer, a quick refresher was much needed. This class did not fulfill that.
This was a very difficult course because of the amount of information that you learn in such a short time; however, Professor Lee did a great job spreading out the homework and quizzes for this class. No homework was mandatory, but it is definitely necessary in order to do well in this class. He is a tough grader; especially at the beginning.
Really chill guy and always willing to help his students out. Always tries to give at least partial credit. Tests and quizzes are honestly easy as long as you put in the work and study.
Professor Lee's class is challenging but rewarding. His lectures are engaging and the quizzes/tests align well with the textbook homework. For study prep, I found ChatGPT and Unstuck AI to be super helpful alongside the textbook.
Jim is an absolutely amazing professor. His lectures are very informative and go way into depth on all of the formulas and methods. There is homework every class and quizzes every week but the quiz questions come straight from the homework which has an answer key. Engage in the lecture and ask questions, he is so nice and super helpful.
