This teacher expects you to learn the material. But I thought his lectures were really great! I mean this guy is a real expert on history, and I learned more in this class than any I have taken so far. Essay on test are a little tough;take good notes in c
Very good teacher! Great at giveing notes, tests are kinda hard, but listen in class.
very detailed, you must attend and take detailed notes. study what is on study guide and you will be ok! you will actually learn something in this class.
I really enjoyed this class and would highly recommend that anyone who wants to learn a lot about American history from a very knowledgeable and interesting professor should take this class. Thanks, Dr. Leiker!!!!!
Dr. Lieker is an AWESOME teacher! He is so interesting that you will be sure to learn. All you have to do is show up to class and take notes. If you do that than you will do well in the class. Also he really likes participation and some of your grade will be based on that.

Dr. Leiker is a great professor. I recommend him to anyone who is willing to work some what hard, but wants to learn in return. He makes the lectures interesting and easy flowing. His tests are the hardest part about the class but are not too difficult if you study accordingly
This teacher was very rude to me because I was a cute girl...so to say if you want to take a class that you are judged in then take this class. Other then that he says mmK every 5 sec.
He is very biased and seems like hes pissed at the world. Likes suck ups
Dr Leiker is by far one of the best professors at JCCC. I went in to US history not at all interested in the subject and now I plan to make history my major. Amazing teaching style that really works. The music and examples he provides bring life to history.
took his African American Studies class and very much enjoyed it. would for sure recommend to anyone needing humanities credit. he is a great professor who lectures well so that you may take good notes.
He starts off telling you it is a really hard class. But if you do the work and use the study guide for tests its easy. You learn a lot and it pays off in any other class you take in college. He is also very understanding just follow his rules and participate. It diffently prepares you for a 4 year college.
Dr. Leiker is a great guy. Except the stupid discussion sessions every two weeks, the class is easy and interesting. He is smart and knows what he is talking about.
This teacher is the worst teacher of all teachers at JCCC. He has no respect for students and is full of himself. He treat students very poorly. A good communication class would be good for him to improve his skills. DROP as soon as possible. He is very biased and likes students who are suck up.
I took 2 courses from him: African American Studies and History.Excellent teacher...always keeping the material interesting!I highly recommend any of his courses to anyone who wants understand history and who wants to enjoy learning.
A poor intellect who doesn't know the material, has no understanding of teaching. Caters to his favorite students.
He is a very straight forward teacher who lectures everday and expects you to be there. He will tell you how the class is not easy, but if you follow the study guide and come to class, it is very easy. His assignments are straight forward and there is no reason to do bad in his class.
Very specific & particular about what he expects- yet fails to tell you just what that is! A TON of reading for class- textbook, bookreports & 1/4" thick packets. Should not been an intro class-history,english&writing skills A must! Perhaps a bit bitter to be teaching at a junior college & not a 4yr. Very intimadating 4 an intro class.
I enjoyed this class. He has high expectations but this is college after all. Attendance is not only necessary for the class participation points but also because the tests are entirely based from class notes. At first he may seem intimidating but I assure you he is approachable and more than willing to help when needed.
Dr. Leiker is a very nice guy! His lectures are VERY interesting..but his tests were very hard! Lots of reading!
i took his west civ one class. he over analyzes simple reading materials, very unwilling to accept a different viewpoint. caters to idiots, but with that said he's an excellent lecturer. you'll get alot of information during note taking time.
These people who rated him lowest are probably lazy and untalented. If you take good notes, you will find everything he talks about is covered on the test. Western Civ was a blast, especially discussions, so make sure you synthesize! If you really want to /learn/ and /read/ as you have been since you were little, I highly recommend!
Intellectually lazy - does not really demand much from his students. But a nice guy nonetheless.
Leiker is the MAAAAN!! Western Civ was extremely interesting and if you make an effort to read the material and participate in discussions during class you're sure to get a good grade. At first I thought the tests were going to be difficult because they consist of all essay but after the first one it's easy to see what he's looking for.Hes awesome
this guy was awesome. he really knows his stuff and really, has been one of my favorite and best teachers. and i've gone to three different schools--The University of Kansas and Syracuse University in NY. HE IS AMAZING. I got so much out of his class.
I LOVE Dr. Leiker! African American studies is not an easy class, but I learned SO much! Read the books, go to class, and TAKE NOTES and you'll be good. To the guy below who said he's never had a history prof grade on grammar, um you're in College, buddy, its expected that you would have a grasp of the language when writing papers, DUH!
Excellent teacher, lectures very well, tons of notes if you take them all you'll do just fine. Tests are very tough though.
tests are hard. this is not an easy A.
the best thing to do in this class is be ready to work. its worth it and he will help you. i made a really good friend in this class so id say if your ready to work. take his class. you have to read Confederates in the attic and do a primary document paper. the test aren't easy but i think a lot of fun
RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!! Got a D on my first test and he said I was above average. ONLY lectures and his tests are almost completely essays. SOO HARD - you can't BS these essays. Had to put as much work into this class as I did Chemistry. DO.NOT.TAKE.FROM.DR.LEIKER.EVER. wayyy too much writing and wayyy too hard.
Overall, he made the reviews for the tests so broad that once you got the test you thought," this is it?" So you didn't get the right information. The tests were extremely hard and all you do in class is take notes the entire time and it is hard to concentrate. I highly encourage to not take him.
bad bad bad bad bad. soooooooooooooooooooo hard. study guides are WORTHLESS. "here's your study guide." "this is everything we've learned....." "yes, you should know everything."
Dr. Leiker is HOT!
Dr. Leiker is a fabulous professor. His style is very narrative. This helped me understand American history in a way that came alive and caused me to gain further interest in studying history. Plan to study and really know the material. You'll have a difficult time if you miss lectures. Nearly all test material comes from lectures.
Leiker is, admitted, a VERY difficult teacher. You have three tests to maintain your grade with, one of which is the final. aside from that there are 2 major papers (8-12 pages) and one extra credit. It's mostly lecture. if you take good notes and test well, this class will be a breeze. No, he's not a sleep through class teacher. but very doable.
Jim is great, I not only had him for History to 1877 but took an extra 1 on 1 class with him. Show up every day, take notes and use the study guide you will be fine. He knows his subject. All of the class is from lecture, no need to buy the book. He is hard but fair and will listen to his students ideas and encourages class participation.
Very good teacher. Teaches subject well, all of class was spent lecturing and he always made lectures interesting. I would recomend him if you don't mind studying for his tests (which are pretty difficult) and can write both essays and major papers. Great teacher overall though. Learned more than I have ever learned in a History class.
One of the best professors I have ever had. You will have to do the work for this class, but you will be rewarded. He really is an amazing teacher!
If you have the opportunity to take his class I urge you to do it. I had his class semester and I wish I could take it again! Very knowledgeable! He compromises with his students and works to help you in class. He let us have class outside. Just go to class and listen and you'll get a good grade. One of my favorite teachers ever!!
SUUUPPPERRRR HARD!!! Everyday was lecture about every single little detail possible! 3-4 tests and one paper and thats it. To make things worse they are all essay tests and the reviews mentioned everything you talked about so you dont really know whats going to be the essay questions. Super nice and very smart teacher but def wasnt my style.
EXCELLENT teacher overall! I looked forward to his class everyday because I loved his lectures. Tests were pretty hard though. There are a few essays you will have to write and they won't be easy. You have to pay attention and study to do well. Good guy and he was very much a moderate when teaching American history.
I took him for Western Civilization I and I would definitely do it again! His lectures are very informative and the selection of readings are so insightful. His tests and term paper are very tough, but he only wants to challenge you and make you a critical thinker and to take history seriously. He's no easy A, but his class is very much worth it!
Definitely one of the better professors i have had. He gives great lectures. He expects his students to work hard, but you learn a lot as a result.
never gotten an F in my life. If you are not a good note taker and like to have a text book to refer back to this is not your class. His lectures are very fast paced (you learn a lot by listening and he knows what he is talking about), but there is no book to go back to if your notes have some gaps.
Teacher knows the subject well but the class is SUPER HARD. His tests are impossible, dont ever hope to get an A. His final is a killer and it WOULD bring your grade down. Strict on attendance:you miss class or come in 2minutes late 8 times and he drops you. No excuses :(
I was incredibly impressed with his knowledge on EVERYTHING. He had a way of making you see both sides of history, while remaining objective. He treats you like a college student, so be ready to take a lot of notes and study hard. Extra credit helps to get/keep and A. Not easy, but you will gain knowledge. VETERAN FRIENDLY
Very straight forward teacher. Not an easy class. Test are ridiculously hard. He knows his stuff. If you get him pay EXTRA attention. More than you normally would. And make sure you go to class. He will drop you.
MR. LEIKER IS VERY INFORMATIVE AND OLD FASHIONED. LOTS OF NOTES BUT LECTURES ARE ENTERTAINING AND KEEP YOU INTERESTED. CLASS IS CHALLENGING IT MADE ME A BETTER STUDENT. I WOULD RECOMMEN THIS TEACHER TO ANY FUTURE STUDENTS. GOOD LUCK.
One of the best professors I ever had. If you cared about the subject matter, he was your guy. If you were there to fulfill an elective, maybe not. Regardless, his Middle Eastern history class should be required for anyone who claims to have any knowledge of the world's political landscape.
Show up to class on time, pay attention and take good notes because the tests are basically all written essays but I feel like I am learning a lot and not just memorization for a test, the information sticks with you. If you show interest and actually interact with him during lectures he'll like you
Dr. Leiker is a history teacher for history buffs. Tests are all over lectures, he uses the book occasionally as a reference. He's a published author and grades papers as such so be prepared to work hard for a good grade. He enjoys questions related to the subject so ask good ones. I would take his classes again without a doubt. Very enjoyable.
This is one of the most challenging courses I have taken. On the first day he said that he would make this course one of the hardest classes that you will take. All for a simple elective? Not worth it. There's never an answer that is "good enough" and he's claimed that he rarely gives out A's.
Professor Leiker's class is a really good choice for online history. Although there are quizzes every week, if you just read and give some effort towards them he's really fair with his grading. He's a little tougher on grading papers, but again, as long as you actually put in effort you'll get a good grade in this glass.
Professor is very knowledgeable and his lectures prove it. If you go to class and pay attention you will pass. Easily the best professor i've had yet.
History class that does not come easy, the man is genuinely passionate about his work and expects some level of passion and respect from his students. Gives clear study guides well ahead of tests, and grading criteria is outlined to the letter. Easy to talk to, and easy to get into contact with. Would highly recommend if you take history seriously.
Great guy, enjoyed taking his U.S. History Since 1877 course. Class is all lecture essentially, but it's enjoyable. Pay attention & the information comes naturally, does a really good job sticking the info in your head. Quizzes due every Sunday, some can take a couple a couple hours to complete. Essays, book to read, etc., but a fun class.
Mr. Leiker is the man. If you want to know more about Black History, this class is definitely it. I learned a lot in his class that Ive never got to experience in middle nor high school. Hes a tough grader because he wants you to have the knowledge and not just be in his class because you need the credits. Discussions are a must.
Loves his job and it shows. He wants you to learn about the History of the United States and cares that you have some grasp of the knowledge. Gives handouts to prepare for mid-term and final, and even has an option to do both in an interview-style rather than sitting and writing all the answers down. Would take again, and respected him.
Dr. Leiker genuinely cares and show the upmost respect for his students. His lectures are created to teach, not to hear himself speak like many other professors on campus. Also, take his offers for extra-credit seriously it will help you short and long-term. If you are an aspiring historian, Leiker is the professor for you!
Seriously the worst professor Ive ever had at jccc. If you wanted to be an English teacher teach comp bro not history.
horrible, literally the worst class I've ever taken. worst teacher
Best professor of history ever. You will learn a ton. Readings are carefully curated and make you think a lot. Truly first rate. If you listen and read what he recommends, you will get an A.
He is a great professor! Expects participation and hard work. The weekly quizzes can be rather difficult and lengthy. Also 2 papers that had to be written that were challenging as well. LISTEN to the videos he posts about the weeks assignments they are extremely helpful and often contain parts of answers to the quizzes. Be prepared to work!
Clear expectations since the beginning. He is very kind and accessible and provides great feedback. You can tell he wants students to succeed but expect to work for your grade. The reading was actually enjoyable and the assignments were graded fairly. Would definitely recommend this professor if you want to actually learn about history.
Good guy! Can be challenging but that's his job. If you want to learn something, definitely take him. If you want an easy A, take someone else.
Wow, apparently people don't like to read! It's college, not high school, people! Professors assign homework. Get over it!
Learned a lot.
I can't say about his US history classes but in western civ he taught me so MANY things I'd only just heard about. Fair, always looked at different sides, everyone's opinion was welcome unless your opinion was bs because you skipped the reading and he'd know if you did.
Get ready to read and go to class because he'll drop you if you don't. But he expects a lot and gets a lot. I'm a better student because of it.
Be prepared to read 50-60 pages of a textbook every week during this course. Additionally you will have 2 major project assignments, one of which you will be required to read a book, then write a essay. The second project will be a primary document assignment. Quizes every week, discussion questions every week, expects lengthy responses!
Never worked so hard for a B in my life and for general ed course at that. Defiitely knows his stuff and expects you to as well. I enjoyed learning history from him but history isn't my natural thing.
I had Dr. Leiker as my professor for Western American History during the 2024 Fall semester and he was always firm but fair. I felt like my writing greatly improved thanks to his feedback. Prepare for lots of reading (we had one textbook, one novel, and one biography) and make sure to turn your assignments in on time.
Good class.
Learned a lot. Make sure to rwad feedback.
Prof Leiker was mostly kind, but can be a bit abrasive when a student makes a mistake imo. Expect weekly quizzes and readings, two long essays, & three exams. Expect to write a lot. I would take another class with him, but I would make sure I cared a great deal about the material as this class required a great deal of time (esp for a gen ed credit)
I had him for online class. I spent a month feeling intimidated because he comes off as mean in writing. I sucked up my courage and paid him an office visit. We talkd about school and life, he cracked jokes, and I realized the toughness is mostly a shell. Get beyond his evil bark and he's kind, honest, wanting to help, and never dishes bs.
Keeps the essay questions vague and then will dock points if you do not have every specific part of the answer. Don't even consider doing any outside research if you find something even mildly interesting because he will dock points if it is not in the textbook but you put it in your answer. Only use info from the textbook
If you take him online, his multiple choice are pretty easy if you do the reading. On essays, he told me "use lots of proper nouns" so I started doing that and things got better. Read the answer keys after each quiz because that's where he tells you what the important stuff is (to him) for exams. He doesn't care about being popular.
Can come off a little abrasive at first, but that's just his style. 15 weekly open-note quizzes, 2 papers, 2 tests, 1 final. Very clear organization and expectations of courseload, be ready to read since all info comes from the textbook or assigned reading. Offers extra credit. Pretty positive experience, and he's a very respectable person.
