yo this class was the easiest A i ever got in this instituion.
QUizs are completely on the chapters from the book. Very few essays. Intersting lectures at least to me. Pretty easy class. got an A in the class and I bombed the last quiz. Make sure u get on his good side, and participate once in a while.
this is a very funny class interesting but sometimes out of context, its the best history class that I've ever had.
THIS CAT IS FUNNY AS HELL , AND MAKES THE SUBJECT OF LEARNING WHAT WOULD NORMALLY BE A BORING SUBJECT FUN & INTERESTING. HASEN'T GIVEN US AN EXAM YET BUT, LOVES TO GIVE ESSAY'S. WARNING DON'T SAY ANYTHING OUT OF LINE HE WILL CUT YOU UP.
great professor funny guy and teaches well, makes u interested in the subject cause asks the class to participate alot, is helpful with the tests and quizes
Best history class I have ever had
Nothing really Steller here. perhaps it was the coursework but i really didnt care for the class, Easy A. Easy tests, easy essays. Never did the readings. Basically if you have paid attention to your history courses in Junior High and High School you can goof off the whole semester.
Great Teacher. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Easy on grading.
Easy A. Class was boring as hell but it was required. the work wasn't that bad he doesn't go by the text book but there are required novels autobiography and write some papers on the books. soem of the books were sort of interesting.
Very boring class. He is a very helpful teacher and all the material he covers for the exams show up on the tests. he tries to make students laugh with his corny jokes. If you review his notes, write good papers, and study for his exam you too can get an A.
Great Teacher. Smart, knowledgeable, fair and even a little funny. Has command of his subject and class. Quickly cuts down those who wish to challenge him and waste class time. Very witty. Sit back take notes on his lectures and you'll get a great grade.

Good Teacher
Good teacher, has command of his knowledge. DO NOT BUY the $80+ test book. You will NOT need it at all.
He is a real good professor. He makes a topic become interesting, rather then boring. His energy and smoothness is not a bad thing at all to have in a class room. He's well dresssed and well spoken too. Not too bad to look at either!!
Good Teacher
good teacher...he doesnt give out homework, and the essays are based on the books/readings (not the text book)...also he gives take home midterms. overall it's an easy class to pass!
Amazingly friendly teacher....makes the class fun and really interesting....u need the text bookt o study for like 4 quizzes and thats it...require like 3 short essays....easy grader...midterm was an essay....if u need the class...hes the perfect one to have!!!
Good Prof. Teaches well... pretty easy to pass. Just asked for 3 papers, 3 quizzes, and the final. Very friendly and encourages class participation.
France and Francophone Africa (During the 2007 Winter Intesession) - This class was fairly interesting and the prof knows his stuff. Assigns a fair amount of reading, but you don't have to do it all. 3 short papers, we were able to work him down from 4. Can be rather patronizing, but presents interesting info
winter session with him was not so easy he assigned a lot of readings, booklets and books itself and asked for 4 papers but later on was nice enough to make life easier for us by changing it to 3 not too much of an easy grader neither
very easy going. just participate in his class, no exams, no quizez just three or four papers, nothing to worry about, easy grader, he just expects more than the minimun pages he asked for, he hardly uses the books, even though his papers are based from the info from the book, so get his books.
great prof. always knows what he is talking about. easy going and fun personality. would highly recommend!

Yes, he is easy. But, he is very POLITICAL, and sometimes misinterpret the world. Very, very Socialist alike (socialist and antiamerican would love him). I would not recommend him.
A bit arrogant. He acts like he knows it all, but does not
Seriously,I have never seen professor that was so into himself like Lewis, He is not there to teach, but to patronize, for him it’s show business not a place of enrichment or education. Look sharp and cool is good for car salesman not for a professor. Patronizing is not a way to teach but a way to keep people ignorant while you satisfy you ego.
he is a professor with an anti-education attitude, it’s seems Lewis is in class to show his brain powers, not to show you the way to knowledge. It’s all about him, he is classic,‘hates you if you clever and despised the fool’ type of teacher,if you don’t know a fact, you’ll get the attitude. If want to learn, stay away from Dr.Lewis and Mr.Ego.
A professor that really knows his stuff and class was interesting as well learned a lot in this class he's a lenient grader as well hope he teaches more class i love this professor
A must have professor lenient grader, interesting class will give you a different perspective on socialism and communism(not the crap they teach you in high school) very helpful and easy to talk to in class or outside will take him again

Good prof, knows his stuff and seems excited to be teaching...a little arrogant but not enough to make you reflexively dislike him...no tests, doesn't use the text too much, if you write well you should be fine. If he's a socialist, then George Bush is Trotsky...seriously kids, don't sleep thru your Modern Political Thought classes.

I don’t want to sound mean spirited, but Mr Lewis is one of the worst, arrogant, not helpful nor care for the students and their need, but concentrating in improving his image, in some kind of ego trip, that shadows his intellectual abilities. Too bad.
HE IS A GOOD PROF
J. Lewis is a great professor who is both passionate and knowledgeable about history. He is definitely opinionated, but that doesn't stop him from allowing the class to participate. I would recommend him as a professor, especially if you're a real history buff.
very intellectual...shares his own views...very informative...very fair with grading...easy 2 talk 2...he makes the class exciting...he gets people involved in asking/answering questions...i had him 4 world civ and modern europe...once i even used what i learned in his class 2 start a conversation with a girl in school...lol
A smart man, but he does not present an objective view of the subject. Rather he uses the class as an outlet for his own political views, talking about contemporary USA matters rather than the subject at hand. I happen to share many of his views, but still would rather have been taught than preached to. Also refuses to use email. An easy A though.
Easy A if you do your work. Also, make sure to submit all the assignments on time.
This is the BEST professor that I've ever had... don't hate on him for your narrow headed
Boring lecturer. Asks personal questions of students (do you work? where do you live?) and then mocks them when ranting about his world view. Goes off topic a lot with rants on US culture. Easy grader though, so if you can sit through his lectures and not argue with him you'll be fine. Don't buy the textbook he only uses the supplemental books
Took him in modern europe. He's an easy grader and doesnt demand much. I say take him if you get the chance
HE WAS VERY HELPFUL AND HIS LECTURES WERE GREAT. VERY INTERESTING AND IT WAS EASY TO ENGAGE IN THE CONVERSATIONS!!!! I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM TO EVERY STUDENT
Took him for modern europe class is fairly easy. Kind of give a lot of work. Lectures are good and he is very opinionated which some how made the material easier to understand. He does use the book. GIve 2 in class quiz's, take home midterm and final, and 1 4-5 page essay. Seems like a lot of work but its not most of it was easy.
this professor is sooo sexy, i couldnt keep my eyes off him!!!!
he is sooo sexy, couldnt stop looking at him
Extremely careless about his class. He does not thoroughly reads the essays and grades them. Other than that he is pretty nice and cool.
He is great!!!!!!!!!! and hot!!!!!!!!
Class is easy. Lewis is a very opinionated man, and his class reflects this. Espouses his arguments in every class. Had him for 20th Europe. (3) 3 page papers, (2) 5-7 pg papers. Participate and come to to class this helps your grade b/c he gets to know u. Reading for some assignments could be a lot sometimes. Easy A- at least.
Class appears easy because he jokes a lot about everything. The downside is that he is never organized, and you have no idea how much is each assignment worth :( which can create confusion of what to expect of your final grade.
Firstly, he had an amazing body. Secondly, i couldn't stand hist. before this class, but he brought me onto it. He made everything really interesting. Very easy grader. Ass. are straight forward. it was a really good class and i actually got something from it.
Prof Lewis is one of the more eloquent professors in this institution. His articulation is so good it is a pleasure to hear him speak. The assignments are more than reasonable for a 300-level course. He won't bore you with dates, and makes this class interesting by picking people at random to answer questions. He is opinionated, but so is everyone.
He gives take home quizes and exams, which makes his class really easy. He's a good lecturer but sometimes you may be annoyed by the corny jokes he cracks. overall he's a pretty good professor and not too bad on the eyes.
Another teacher who abuses his power by picking on his students and making offensive jokes. Honestly some are funny but then again some are really messed up. Not cool. Needless to say, his class isn't TOO hard. If you really try you can get an A. BE AWARE THOUGH, HE DOESN'T ALWAYS GIVE TAKE HOME EXAMS. HE'S SLOWLY TRANSITIONING TO IN-CLASS EXAMS.
This professor is the worst possible candidate to teach history! He frames everything to fit his views while chastising anyone who challenges him. Instead of teaching history he preaches his ideas and political views. The whole class is about how socialists are saviors of man kind and conservatives try to destroy it.
He know everything about subject...cool guy...easy class...just do your work and you will be fine...
Modern Europe was an easy class, no in-class tests or anything, just take home essays. However, this teacher is very rude and not professional at all. He constantly comments and criticizes students on how they look, what they wear, where there from, etc. And lastly, outside of class he is basically unreachable.
This guy knows European history like the back of his hand. Definitely one of the best at CCNY. He is a pretty sarcastic person, but if you aren't the type to be easily offended you will love being in his class.
I agree with the person who said that outside of class this professor is unreachable. I would avoid him because there are better professors out there who are courteous enough to email back their students who genuinely need help. I am disappointed in this professor because he doesn't seem to care about his students and never responds to his emails.
Very disorganized, poor grader and poor attention
A complete joke of a class. Lectures were just monologues since no one was willing to participate; hardly surprising since he spent the first weeks of class mocking students in class if they expressed an opinion. When he ran out of students he switched to mocking other scholars. Never bothered to reply to emails. Worst professor I've ever taken.
lol I really hated his class, you basically sit through 1 hour and 15 minutes of his lecture just to realize his tests are basically all in the required reading. All his tests are take home essays, so just go to class for attendance and do your 3 essays. Hes really disorganized, but it was easy B+
His knowledge of European history is incredible. Also one of the best lecturers I've ever had. He is very openminded to many interpretations. Work is quite reasonable.
His lectures are so long and he does not stop talking. 4 assignments- 2 quizzes, 2 papers and all are take home. Do all the assignments and show up to class for attendance and you'll pass. Definitely recommend hm.
Amazing professor. Knows his stuff extremely well & is able to clearly convey it in lecture. Honestly, his class isnt hard if you just show up & listen, not even take notes. All his assignments are takehome:2 quizzes & 2 essays with required readings. In the end you will learn a lot, and if you do the work you will easily get an A! Highly recommend
not a good professor!! thats all I can say about him
No tests, everything is take home and grammar counts !
He is a great professor, i had him for History 20600 aka Modern Europe, he sends out all the information and assignments for his class in an email a few days before the semester starts so you have all the time in the world to write the 3 or 4 papers he will give you (he does not give extensions because of this).
Fantastic professor. Easy class, but really engaging and got me interested in the subject. Always cracking jokes and makes you feel like a part of the class. Only assignments are easy readings that he emails you/are found in the textbook. All quizzes and the final are take home. Easy class with a lot of value, informative and fun!
You reallt dont have to go to class. You just have to do all of the assignments he sends out and hand it in when its due. The plus side is that he gives you 2-3 weeks to complete one assignment which was nice. Class was boring though, he cracked jokes here and there but it didnt make up for the times that i fell asleep.
Take him. All his tests/papers are from the readings he gives. Don't really need to worry about the lectures. Attendance is mandatory though.
Very knowledgeable; attendance matters, but the readings and papers are key. Very lively and funny at times, so not boring.
Only 4 assignments throughout course. Just do well on those and you'll get a good grade. You can just sit in the back, just come for attendance. His lectures are not important, just read the material he gives. Papers arent that difficult. Class is boring though
A really easy class with only 4 assignments, all of which are take-home (with almost all of the answers easily available online). The lectures aren't important, you can pretty much ignore them and be fine. He sometimes takes attendance. Overall, the easiest class I've ever taken.
Ive always hated history because its always been boring to me but for the first time, a prof who actually made his class fun and interesting. Easiest A in the world, just 4 assignments that are 3-4 weeks apart and he emails you what to read from. Pay attention to him while he speaks bc a lot of times he gives out the answers in his lectures.
He provides very interesting articles. He's a fun prof. easy grading and easy paper as long as you stick to the prompt.
Guy definitely knows his stuff, brilliant! Show up, learn a little, laugh at his jokes, participate here and there, and you are set. Most if not all the answers are online. Easy A, complete the assignments that are based on articles he provides!
Great Professor for a class like Modern Europe. He gives three take home "exams" which are basically papers you have to write. Lectures can become a drag. You'll need to show up to class. He takes attendance 80% of the time.
Had him for modern Europe. Class requirements are very straight forward, 4 take home assignments and attendance. lectures are very interesting, and i think he did a great job of accurately portraying moments in history considered "Extreme," like fascism/communism. Offers interesting insight on European civilization that really makes you think
Overall good professor. Class is easy since you get graded on 4 take home assignments. If you plan on taking this class invest in a course hero account where all the answers to his exams and essays are there. He's a nice professor and says some funny jokes during class as he loves to make fun of Brooklyn.
This class is pretty easy, but really boring. There are only four (4) assignments for the entire course, which the professor gives weeks to complete before their due dates. ALL OF THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE TAKE HOME !! All you really have to do is show up for attendance. Overall, a pretty cool professor. I wouldn't mind taking him again.
Pros:Hes a very nice and professional instructor, he makes History interesting, also the class isn't too hard because its 4 assignments and you can find the answers online anyways, and he makes alot of jokes. He was also very interesting because his point of views is very neutral on debatable subjects Cons: Just needs to be kinda more lenient on HW
Only 3 assignments, so that means you need to get good grade on each work, if not it will pull down your grade.
He only gave 3 assignments and a take-home final. His requirements for each assignment are clear and concise. He is a great lecturer and actually gives most, if not all answers to his assignments within his lectures. He takes attendance out loud every class. He speaks fast and asks questions a lot so if you write slow, bring your laptop!
One of the best professors to take for modern Europe. He literally gives out all of the assignments the first week of class so there is no reason why you shouldn't complete everything. 4 assignments 4-6 pages each, lectures are fun but are not completely necessary to understand the assignments
He's hilarious, although this lectures can be sometimes boring. He doesn't hand out a lot of assignments and when he does, they're all take home. It's an easy class to receive an A in. Also, he takes attendance every day
Although billed as an MA course, where discussion is usually mandatory, Prof. Lewis mostly lectured and taught us about Europe during the 19th century, from art to music, film adaptations, to literature, and the occasional Marxian comment as well. All in all, an enjoyable way to spend my January. Great professor.
I got off to a real bad start because of a multiple choice quiz, but he gave an extra credit opportunity to help sort that out. The rest of the exams were take home and they were a cakewalk. I suggest you take him because he is one of the best at the CCNY History Department. Everything is laid out in advanced on the syllabus.
You will write four essays, but the answers come straight from your notes and the readings. Make sure you take good notes and read. You should do very well. The assignments are each worth 20 percent and the remaining 20 percent comes from attendance. Make sure you show up!!
Just do the assignments and you'll get an A. Its all take home anyways. If you're interested in Modern Europe, his lectures are super fun.
Prof has an interesting view on modern European and American politics and tries to present a balanced approach. Class is an easy A with 4 take home assignments.
One of the best professors at CCNY. Do the 4, 20 questions, assignments once a month and attend class here and there at the LEAST. Easy A class for sure
Amazing professor. I took him twice & taking him again. You will from his class that you will never learn from mainstream bs. He is very considerate. Highly recommended
hes as easy as taking the subway. Take him and you wont regret it! best prof at CCNY. There are 3 assignments all take home.
Super easy class. He's funny, and makes most lectures very engaging. Only three take home assignments are required for his class. He's really chill and won't make you do more than you have too. One textbook is required for his assignments but you can rent it online on Chegg for a small amount. Allows extra credit just in case if you didn't do well
Hes the best prof at CCNY. He is as easy as taking the subway! Take him and you wont regret it. 3 exams all are take home! You cant ask for much more than that!
Lectures were pretty interesting. Textbook wasn't needed but still helped, it's very cheap. There were 3 major assignments mostly answering some questions and essays. Its very hard not to do well in the class.
If you take this class, you should do some prior research if you don't have a strong background in socialism. If you didn't, fear not, you'll be (mostly) fine. Most of the textbooks are available online/library. The entire class was centered around 3 papers so make sure you put in a lot of effort. It's a hard class but you'll learn so much.
such an easy class!! super understanding and there's only a few assignments throughout the course. he's super light hearted and funny and genuinely knows how to get everyones attention
I love him, you will too. Lectures are not entirely necessary to understand the assignments, but answers to assignments are given out in lectures which is helpful. He has 4 "exams" which are just take-home assignments. When it comes to the exams, make sure to write in detail when he does not mention the word "briefly" (quality + quantity).
Very nice professor. He only assigns 4 assignments and no mid-terms nor finals. His lecture is based entirely on the reading for the assignments. You don't have to read much to finish the assignments. Easy A class. Lecture is not necessary and he takes attendance occasionally.
I cannot comment on his teaching since this was an online course, but the assignments were straightforward. This class was similar to high school history and isn't that hard. Grades very lenient as long as it looks like you tried.
The class consisted of 3 homeworks (30%, 30%, 40%). There were no lectures! This means you had to read all the assigned readings on your own and do the work on your own. My problem with this is I could've done the same thing w/o paying tuition so I feel this course was wasted money. Also gave me the incorrect final grade & wasn't able to reach him
He is so disorganized. I had all A grades on my papers. He gave me a C.
No good things can be said about Professor Lewis other than the class is easy. I have never experienced him as an in person professor but as an online one he is insensitive and apathetic. He does not give feedback. He does not respond to emails. He will blame you for your shortcomings with no accountability. His tone is very belittling.
Professor was hard to reach. Gave me the wrong grade. When emailed about it there was no response. Highly do not recommend if you are paying out of pocket.
Never responded back to any emails Unclear grading criteria
Professor Lewis was an excellent professor for HIST 20600. His lectures were engaging, the subject was interesting, and the class was easy. Professor Lewis is upfront with you - this is an easy A class. The 1-star reviews are correct, though - he gives no feedback on assignments (although instructions are clear), and he never responds to emails.
Second time taking him. He gives meaningful lectures and gives inside details of the socialist movement, which is way better than many professors in ccny already. However, I do agree to others 1 point reviews that he does not give feedback, but clear instructions at the same time. I would say he is a fair grader since I bs papers and still got 90+.
A very knowledgeable professor, his class is VERY chill, and we are given 3 assignments total that is it. Granted each assignment is long and contains questions from each reading but he gives alot of time and is chill with attendance. He is also a nice grader and has great jokes. We also have class discussions at times as we may get off topic.
Great History Prof. only gives 3 assignments per semester. You have to read a lot and be present in class but should be fairly easy as each assignment is 1 month long.
Mostly disorganized and lectures can quickly turn to rants or class discussions. But the assignments are graded fairly loosely so I would not worry about it.
Gives enough time to do the assignment but they are very long. Lectures are messy.
Great proffesor. This class is lecture heavy and very fast pace. TBH I didn't really pay attention in this class, but as long as you get the essays done then you won't fail.
I took Professor James Lewis for a class on modern European history. His course was well structured and the grading criteria was crystal clear. Professor Lewis cares about the success of his students, and went out of his way to make sure we understood the material. Assignments were very manageable and he provided extra credit questions on final.
Chill professor. Lecture type of class but encourages students to participate and have discussions.
Take his class. Chill class and chill professor. Walked out learning a lot. He also encourages participation instead of forcing it.
Laid back professor who encourages debate and participation. He's very knowledgeable and gets straight to his point.
Took him as a required class and I don't regret it, the way he would get involved into topics that seemed boring and managing to turn it into something that was interesting. He would use real world examples in order to further explain. Very Well Professor although he doesn't reply to emails sent
If you like history then you'll love his class, he's very spunky and entertaining when he teaches. Only 2 essays for the whole semester. Attendance is mandatory.
Hes able to keep the class on topic and respectful and also entertaining. Only 3 essays for the whole semester. Attendance is mandatory.
He clearly did not read submitted assignments. He left a comment on the first out of my multiple responses. He took issue with the first one and decided to not read the rest and just give a grade. Make sure to echo his elitist ideas or else you'll be in trouble.
Not my cup of tea. Grading criteria and assignment requirements or expectations are extremely unclear. I agree with the other comments about not going against what he says when writing your paper.
coursework is reasonable but grading is unclear. He does not like it if you disagree with him. Readings were interesting and manageable
Bad experience
Not a fan. grading does not make sensee
