Easy as heck, but he's boring, Rude and likes to brag about him and his fake fame and bs's about working w/ barbara streisan and Steven Speilberg
Linahon is a very easy teacher if you like movies and dont care about the information he is teaching. He generally has his facts wrong and he really likes to talk about himself. If you do the lab hours and concert reports you will pass.
Nice enough guy one on one, but likes to talk about himself--A LOT. offensive sometimes:he used the word "negroid" once--a)is that even a word? b)does anyone else find this HIGHLY offensive??
LOVES to brag. Said he's worked with: Michael Jackson, Norah Jones, Christina Aguilera, and more...but there is no evidence to support this! He embellishes a lot and by the 2nd month of class, we were only on week 2 info. according to the syllabus!
he talks about himself ALOT!and when he's not talking about himself, we watch movies in class.
he doesnt know what hes talking about, is rude, requires you to go to stupid useless concerts and doesnt tell you when they are. hes ****, ****, and just plain annoying. if you dont mind someone who doesnt know music and lies take his class.
SO FAR BEHIND on syllabus b/c he goes off on tangents daily! Drops celebrities' names like it's no big deal, even though he's probably never worked with them. Does not tell you when required concerts are but still expects you to attend!
easy if you go to class. boring movies but they help with the tests. Also, there is an extra credit project that will raise you a whole grade. I got an a without much effort. You can use the book on the tests.
This teacher is amazing! He knows so much and he is so classy. He is very organized and lets his students use their books for tests. I learned so much in this class. His past experiances are amazing and overall, he's awesome:)
very smart, but annoying teacher. his lectures are interrupted by his ego, and he talks about his "true" personal experiences all the time. very easy class, open book. but, if you know alot about music culture already don't take it, he exaggerates about his life & it's annoying.

For the first few weeks of class, everything is very interesting until you realize that he teaches most of his material from his experiences. Very intersting stories, but as the semester goes on, he assistants decide to make the tests harder and harder.
This class is an easy "A" as specially if you do your part by actually doing the work and going to class. Dr. Linahon has personal experience in the movie/music industry and his stories are quite interesting. I received a "A" in the class and felt like i learned alot. He has a great sense of humor.
Name Dropper, big time! Annoying stories that are clearly exaggerated. On top of this, if he doesn't know something, he makes it up. To quote him in explaining the meaning of BC and AD, "AD stands for After Death..." Ummm, no it doesn't! AD stands for the Latin, Ano Domine or Year of Our Lord.
He's a good guy who is very passionate about music. This class is not hard, just do the work. It's a lecture class, just sit and listen. He may seem jerky sometimes, but that's because he expects the highest potentional from his students, which most students aren't willing to give. Great class.

I think he is a great teacher. If you listen and show up to class everyday then you should have no problem getting at least a B. The reason he belittles people is probably because they are not listening or not living up to their fullest potential as students.
He is a horrible teacher who condescends and belittles his students. That's the durable part, he name drops at every possible opening availible. He uses the first names of the celebrities like they're best friends or something. Content taught it****. Class is****.
James Linahon is a great teacher. He knows a lot about the subject and the class is not hard at all. In fact, it's one of the best classes I've taken.

The man is a self proclaimed GOD to all. cmon, he needs to get over himself and be a lil more humble. Besides that , he knows music. IF you can get over the fact that he loves himself and thinks that youre utter scum, then you will enjoy his class. Just remember when you're around him you're in the presense of the legendary Prof Linahon.

This guy is a ****. He thinks he knows everyone in hollywood, and hes some big producer guy. He just rambles on and on. Its not for people who want to lurn about current rock, or trends, but of blues and jazz. I was extremely dissapointed.
He was a very commanding and straight forward teacher. He does not tollerate any immature behavior, which is a plus if you want a good grade in this class. It is important to pay attention to every thing he says and write it down. You can use notes and book on the tests, so take precise notes. NEVER MISS CLASS!

I enjoyed the music labs but barely went to class on account that i couldn't stand how much he talked about himself and how "awesome" he thought he was. I didn't learn anything in his class, and he definitely didn't make rock and roll interesting. Class was a waste of money and time. There's no reason a professor needs to talk down to his students.

For class, it's either lecture, test, or a movie. Lectures consists of name-dropping, in-depth looks into eras (some "facts" may not be true), and his political views. Homework is scarce, but do it. Tends to stay on topics for a while before moving on.
At first i hated him because he is in love with himself and its annoying, however he is legit and actually does crazy hollywood stuff. He is a **** **** pig sometimes but in reality hes just a music nerd. read the book and use it on tests you will so get an A. You only need programs from concerts not even the ticket stub!
He's ok. I've had better musical teachers before in my life. It's not so much about the rock music in this class but more about the history of how our modern music came to be.
His class is easy to pass. Rare homework. he tells you whats on the test. most of the stuff comes from the movies you watch in class and his lectures, so i guess to pass you would have to come often. a lot of people dont like him but his personality is crude and enjoyable
It was my mistake to take his class, u have to put your ass to study, not a piece of cake at all though I still passed with a A+ (>96%) but if Music has nothing to do with your major(mine is biz), just take the online class (much easier), it's a waste of time and effort! Extremely boring class. I honestly had trouble keeping myself awake. I do not feel like I learned a single thing because all he does is talk about himself. He is narcissistic and condescending and makes you feel stupid if you don't know something. COMPLETE WASTE OF MY TIME.
I passed the class with a good grade but it was kind of boring. I enjoyed the days we we got to listen to some of the music we were talking about. Besides that it was an ok class.

Easy class if music is an interest.Lectures are fairly interesting, if you burn, class is much better. Can use the textbook& any written notes in it for class, so make sure you read over what he talks about. He sometimes can be full of himself, but he is in the music industry and thats how many of those type of ppl are. Overall, easy A, do the work

Honestly, one of the worst professors. Not clear. Half the test material is not in the book and not taught in lectures. He doesn't make the tests or grade anything you do, his grad students do. Tests are open-book/note but that doesn't always help. Very arrogant and talks about himself the first half of class. Love the subject, not the teacher.

Awesome teacher! this teacher makes student to be interested in what he is teaching, lectures are storytelling (which means easy). gives out the study guide verbally so you must write it down but about 99% of them are in book, and about 1% is in lecture. just make sure you do the listening, lab hours and read the book and you will get an A.

Took his summer course. Open book/open notes. 5 tests in all, 50 points each. 35 points worth of extra credit is available. Both lab and attendance is pass or fail, so if you don't show up or don't do the lab, you'll fail. Overall, his class is easy. And yeah, he's full of himself, but you'll remember what he talks about for the test.
The absolute worst teacher at Fullerton College. Lectures do not help whatsoever; they're nothing but delusions of grandeur or his own fantasies of how the history of music played out. Not factual whatsoever. Arrived 15-20 minutes late every day. Extremely rude, insulted students and assumed 90% of the class would fail. Doesn't grade exams himself.
Tests are open book/notes. Always arrives late, does not respect students, goes off topic about his life, doesn't seem open to students when they want to ask questions. If you study a LOT, take it, but just know the teacher can be an ass
His lectures are rambling, but tests are open book/note. Its nearly impossible to write everything down that he talks about and even if you do, half of it will be useless on the test. Lots of vids. 7 hours music lab, 3 required concerts, and maybe 7 papers required as pass/no pass. He's totally rude and unforgiving, too. Wouldn't recomment him.

Took History of Rock with him. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. All he does is talk about himself. He made us take quizzes at beginning of semester for attendance, then stopped caring. 3 required concerts, 7 hrs lab, everything pass or no pass. If you don't do ONE THING, you FAIL. He's extremely RUDE. Not worth all the effort. I'm warning you.

As for what I think about him as a teacher, I learned ALOT. Tests/Quizzes are open note/book. DO THE LABS AND THE FINAL PROJECT. Your grade depends on it
This class was great. I liked how he wove storys about his personal experience in relation to his knowledge of music and the evolution of rock music. I always knew a lot about music and learned so much more that my family was excited to hear about what i heard in that days lectures. This is a MUST take class if you want to learn.

I'm dropping this class, 5 weeks in, because we have not learned ANYTHING about the History of Rock 'N Roll. We had to rent the movie Amistad, and write a paper on it. Now he wants a paper on 2 different Industrial Work Unions, and then he wants a paper on Joseph McCarthy! SO STUPID! Total waste of time. Take another teacher.

this class should be called "storytelling appreciation" not music appreciation. he talks way to much. we barely learn. tests are easy. seriously i sleep in this class and have an A.
he tends to talk about how he knows this celebrity and that celebrity. goes a bit in his own political views most of the times, it's a bit a annoying as well. no HW, that's a plus. tests are easy. documentaries watched in class are interesting (excluding the beach boys' one) overall an easy A class.

This teacher really knows his stuff and I enjoyed hearing all his stories. The class is simple if you simply read the text. You have 5 tests that are open note/book so if you read and take notes, they shouldn't be too hard. Plus, he reviews and tells you what will be on the test the class prior to the test. Super chill. All you do is watch movies and documentaries. Tests are so easy if you watch the movies. Lab hours are reasonable and if you have a friend in class to sign you in, you can miss class and get credit. He rambles sometimes and talks about how rich he is, but its at least interesting. Don't believe everything he says though. Take him!

Take this class. You will feel very welcomed, if not depressed. He's a nice guy, if you have a sense of humor. Taking his class made me grow up. If you ever need to hear it from the horse's mouth, he is the horse to hear it from.
Took him a few summers ago for hist of rock. He says he takes attendance every day, after 5 abs ur dropped, and somehow I managed to be absent only the days he forget to take roll. I was absent like 8 or 9 times. I never did the hw, the lab hours, or the final paper, PLUS I didn't show for the final. I got an A. no joke. enough said.
Worst teacher ever. If you like to hear made up stories, take this class. I assure you, you will not learn a thing from him, from the countless videos- yes. But overall worst class I have EVER taken.

He trails off a lot though, talks about random stuff which can be rather really off topic sometimes, mostly about his music career i guess... Leaves you thinking twice, but you have to pay close attention to what he says he reviews for exams so you now what to study for. Open Book/Notes for exams! Lab hours and EC concerts help out too Its an easy class hes side tracks a little but its not too bad.
This professor seems to be a little full of himself. It is interesting to hear the things he's done... up to a point. That being said, the class is pretty interesting, he has you do some weird papers. Not too hard overall, I was expecting a C but was pleased to get an A.

Do the concerts as soon as you can because towards the end its a lot more difficult to manage your schedule. Also the lab hours were the worse. Hated them.

He didn't respond to our emails or change it after an entire month. His excuse was to me was that I turned in some papers late & they got lost. I don't know why Linahon has such terrible reviews. Maybe it is because he has a no BS attitude. It isn't high school anymore guys and he treats you like it. His class is so easy like he says, "show up, put your ass in a seat, and you'll do okay." Grow up, come in with a good attitude, and have a sense of humor for his lectures.
How to succeed in Mr Linahon's course: Attend lecture;he'll give you study guides. Write down names of songs he plays for you; they'll be on the exam. Keep your mouth and cell phone to yourself; or he'll kick you out. Open book exams, he offers EC, thought I would get a B..Got an A. Solid Professor.

He's extremely full of himself which I found annoying. Tests are all open notes and open book. He always reviews before a test so you know exactly what to study. 10 hours of lab, which stink but help w/ the listening portion on tests and 2 on campus concerts which must be completed or you will fail. Not a bad class if you actually go you will pass.
He is a great teacher, he has that I wont take any BS from anyone and he is right we are in college. Attend all classes, read textbook, do music lab hours and youll be fine. Tests were not that hard plus they are open book. Hes a great teacher.
The class itself was not hard to attend. However, listening to him brag about himself became a tedious task to end up not passing the class because I was a half hour short on lab hours
Linahon is easy. My own fault for not studying, failing the tests. But everything he talks about is pretty interesting. Awesome life, he's a hard worker and has a lot of neat stories. Great person might come off as rude to SOME but really isn't. JUST FUNNY
Linahon's class is pretty easy -you just need to study. It's college, so be prepared to act like an adult. He doesn't have a problem kicking you out of class if you're on your phone or talking to someone. He shares some cool/funny stories. Your grade is based on 5 exams, online listening, and you have to attend two concerts.
This teacher was rude, ignorant, and annoying. I learned more about his political and religious view than music and he constantly talked about himself and Im sure half the stories are made up since they didn't add up. he also always told us has stupid we were and how 2 percent of us will graduate the others will flip burgers. I couldn't stand him.
I have mixed feelings about him. He's funny and he does seem to care about the disadvantaged. Yet he's rude and spews incorrect facts about history, usually missing dates by a few years (like claiming Kennedy was elected in '62) He also talks down on his students and brags ("I worked with Sinatra"). It's an easy A if you have a good work ethic.
I honestly can't believe any stories this teacher has to say. It's one bs story after another. Anyone who actually has been that successful in life as he claims to have worked with huge celebs 1) wouldn't be teaching at a college and 2) would've been too busy or humble to brag about it. Overall unsatisfied with this teacher.
His test are super easy because they are open book and open notes. He does tend to brag sometimes about he's "amazing life" but in the end he's very chill, just tends to scare students in the beginning.
Showing up wasn't difficult, however all he ever wanted to talk about was himself. He also had a tendency to sprinkle innapropriate comments in with his lectures, which became awkward. his tests were super easy, especially since he allowed us to use our notes. However it was disheartening to fail on account of a missed 15 minutes in the music lab.
I took Music 116 online class from Professor Linahon in last semester. It was a fun class. easy to keep up with as long as you did the assignments every day, and the info he passed on in his quizzes and notes was really interesting. He emailed us reminding us of due dates - tests could be taken multiple times and he would take the highest score!
Prof. Linahon teaches college level work and shares a life filled with professional work. Students who pay attention get real info not just about the class material but about life. Guy is fast, efficient and I found him very easy to ask questions to or clarify assignments. Students who missed class were lost by week three.
very good instructor, very professional and has fantastic knowledge of the entertainment industry. funny at times and very down to earth, i enjoyed going to his class and learned much from his lectures and presentations. i have told many of my college friends to take this class if they needed arts credits. thank you Mr. Linahon for your passion!!!
Don't listen to those fake reviews below me. They were all done on 20915 and look almost the same. It's just Linahon trying to feel better about himself. Probably the worst professor I've had in college so far. Spends too much time talking about himself and sharing BS stories about how he's worked with so many celebrities, the man is delusional.
Talks about himself. A lot. never clear on vocabulary and half the time the notes you take in class are useless. Granted, his tests and exams are open notes. with that said if he's lectures and definitions were relative to the exams everyone would have passed with flying colors. Does not help you outside of class and no retakes on tests. RUN!
He's the worst teacher at FC. He shows up 10 minutes every day and let's class out 20-30 minutes early. He's extremely lazy and his tests have questions he never went over . He spends most of his time talking about himself. He's also rude and condescending. Also get ready to be insulted because he does that a lot. Whatever you do, don't get him!!!!
It may be a huge factor to my overall awareness being focussed in class but, I had early in the mornings from 8:35-10:00 a.m. The opera was so loud in his class that it's almost hard to go to sleep this early. He is a little funny too but, I wish I could've taken this class in the afternoon when I'm wide awake. It's a great class if you love opera
If you're squared away, you will have no problem with this class. I took it online, so that's all I can speak for. Lots of reminders of when assignments are due, grade based only on test performance (points taken off if homework not done on time). The LearnSmart online book thing was a bit confusing, but overall I enjoyed the class.
Overall my experience in the online class was pretty good. One time I mixed up two test dates and missed an exam which I was absolutely not allowed to make up-- which is truthfully my fault, not his, to keep things fair. The class itself was enjoyable and the tests were very easy. Don't expect lenience.
Talks about himself and most of his 'lectures' are just tangents on what music he's helped produced or silly stories involving famous musicians. You're honestly better off staying home and reading the book intensely while also focusing on the reading assignments. Tests are open note so having a few pages and textbook gives you a nice A.
Took his online class, and it went GREAT! He stayed on top of informing the class on upcoming assignments, quizzes, exams, etc. He is a very understanding professor, and cares a lot about his students, even though the class is online! He is also a pretty good at getting back to emails quickly! I enjoyed his class so much i registered for another!!
Do NOT believe people when they say he is a "fantastic" professor. Those people are just as delusional as him. Everyone knows you take these lame online music classes just to get some easy credits but in this case, DON'T. He is extremely vague and then tells you that you're the problem. He is a condescending useless professor.
Worst professor at FJC. Has handouts for every other class that have nothing to do with the test. Expects you to know the material simply because he does. Don't bother asking questions in class, he'll only insult your for not knowing it. Overall, if you could take anyone else do it.
Don't bother wasting your time taking this professor. Honestly, this class along lectures and study guides he provides are useless for his exams. Expects you to know the material as he does. I disliked this professor. I honestly believe he shouldn't be teaching this class to begin with. Not a good professor. Take someone else or a different GE.
He verbally gives the study guide for exams and those questions do not help what-so-ever on exam. Watch a lot of videos on material that isn't covered on exam as well. He talks about himself a lot! I never missed class, sat in the front, and did every assignment and I got B's & C's on exams (typically I am an A student). I wouldn't recommend.
James (Jim) Linahon is an abusive creep; he has been for decades. If you know this going in, itll be a balanced playing field for you Good luck.
Not an easy A class, but it's an easy B class. Lecture heavy but straight forward about the work from the beginning. Professor Linahon is kind of a music blowhard and cocky but it's because he knows what he's talking about. Has cool connections if you're looking to get into music I would talk to him about it.
Awesome class. I took History of Rock online and loved it. It's more of a fun activity learning from Linahon than an actual class. Would recommend for sure.
Literally just show up and pass. His lectures really get off topic sometimes but it's bearable. The tests are somewhat hard and I averaged a C on every test after the first one but still got an A cause I believe he curves grades at the end. He offers one extra credit assignment (watch a movie) and concert reports will be required.
I took this class because I figured history of rock being taught by any teacher would be good since this class is based off music Linahon doesnt lecutre right Hes always talking about the success he had in the past. I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you're looking for easy credits. He tends to get off topic during lectures so if you want to pass the test you HAVE to do the reading. He provides study guides for his test & they're all open notes so you can definitely pass but it's a lot of work and your notes must be really precise.
Wish I could have had the chance to be engaged in class but all of our time goes to listening to name-drop filled tall tales. Doesn't cite sources and has given completely misinformed lectures. The class is required for music majors but not intended for music majors, I felt that if he had connected with us more there could have been actual learning
Professor Linahon is very self-centered when it comes to his lectures. He found a way to turn music history into an autobiography of his accomplishments. If you simply show up and do the work, it isn't a difficult class, but I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
