Great professor. No weekly assignments, only reading, which was all online. 30% of the grade was participation, the rest was one midterm (very easy, I got 99%) and one final (a bit less easy but still easy). Class was quite interesting if you like politics and he presented a bit of his own research too.
knows his stuff, knows how to teach. Wish I could take another class with him.
Great class!
great prof
Great class -- his 447 African Politics class is also great!
Professor Long is a great lecturer, he presents information in a clear and effective manners and his lectures are always fun to go to. As with any political science class there was a good amount of readings, but not much more beyond 2 tests. Very nice guy, enthusiastic about his work. (I am glad he includes his own work in the lectures)
Your grade in the class is based off the mid-term and the final. They aren't too hard but make sure you know the content pretty well. He gives you good study guides for the tests too. His lectures are funny and entertaining and you can tell he's passionate about his work.
Professor Long is a really great lecturer. He sometimes lectures on his own research and based on this you can tell he is very passionate about his work. He gives out a pretty accurate study guide for the test, which makes the exams pretty decent in terms of difficulty. To succeed however you should definetely know the material on the study guide.
Awesome! I learned a ton about African Politics. Professor Long really knows his stuff -- definitely take this class.
The class was nearly all discussions, but he made sure that the material we read and the topics covered were interesting. A paper every few weeks and participation in class based on the readings was all that was needed. He's really funny and interesting to talk to, and the class was one of my favorites.
African Politics was probably my favorite class I took at UW. Professor Long knows his stuff and is passionate, which makes his class both interesting and easy to be engaged in. Expect to be held accountable for your readings and to participate in class, but i'm happy I did because I feel as though I really took something away from this class!
From his 204 class, and he's probably my favorite lecturer I've had as of yet here. His lectures are entertaining and engaging with interesting material. The readings can be a bit tedious but he explains them well enough. Overall great professor.
This man cares about democracy more than I've ever cared about anything in my entire life. I was in his autumn 204 lecture and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from someone who has so passionately dedicated himself to his field. Nothing but respect from me.
One of my favorite professors at UW. You'll want to go to his lectures because he's so engaging and knows so much about what he's teaching. Almost disappointed every time lecture ended because he had me so interested in what he was saying.
Amazing lecturer, and thinker. Keeps students engaged and is kinda hot
I've taken Pol S 204 and Pol S 335 with Professor Long. He is without a doubt the best professor I have ever had, and 335 is the most excited I've been about a course. Any opportunity to learn from him simply cannot be passed up. Interesting and highly applicable readings, amazingly cohesive lectures, and a sarcastic sense of humor.
He is one of the best professors I ever had. His lectures are engaging and actually teach something. Definitely recommend him. I am very picky when it comes to professors but he got my respect!
Great professor with really good lectures, but you will need to work hard. Challenging grader and there is SO much complicated reading that he does test on, but really interesting material and overall good class.
One of the best professors that I have had at UW. The grade is based on quiz section short paper each week and a midterm and final. The tests are similar to the study guide and clearly graded. He is so interesting and engaging, everyone should take his class!
Amazing lectures, really explains topics well and thoroughly. Pretty important to go to lecture. The readings are all very relevant and make the topic more understandable without being a waste of time. They are all also very readable and interesting. One of the best classes I've taken at UW, super interesting topic with a great professor.
Yells at students for dropping water, sneezing, coming in 5 minutes late. Super condescending and goes by lectures too fast. Also his lectures are much too broad and he tries to connect things that don't work. I wouldn't reccommend taking any of his classes to anyone, and most people I know in the class would say the same.
He tried to fit so many things into lecture that the last 10 minutes were chaotic and caused confusion over topics. If you show up late, get ready to feel his wrath because for some godforsaken reason it's his Achilles Heel. Basically you're either gonna like him or you're gonna want to transfer out.
Best class ever -- especially for intro level. Loved the material and best lecturer I've had at UW. Clearly cares about his students and I've never seen someone so energetic about political science. Can't wait to take more courses with him!
The best professor that I have had at UW. I specifically took this class because I enjoyed JSIS B 371 with him so much. He has done incredible work around the world and is an amazing lecturer with clear explanations and grading. It was incredible learning from a leading expert on Africa and hearing him speak about his research. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Absolutely best professor at UW, have taken three classes with him and really enjoyed them all!
Great class, really interesting and fun lectures.
I didn't love this professor just because his lectures we're really fast, and theres no technology allowed in class. But in the long run I feel like I learned a lot and his tests were reasonable, and I would take it again.
I greatly enjoyed this class, the lectures were very well structured and the professor knew what he was talking about. The only annoying thing was no technology in class or in quiz section but I'm not sure if he is going to stick with that b/c my class was the first to try it out. He has really good explanations but it's a reading heavy class.
Crime and Corruption was a really cool class. You delve into a lot of interesting material from tons of different cases and history. Lectures were great, but definitely do the reading (most of which is fun and kinda quirky).
I had POL S 204 with Professor Long online because of the pandemic, and yet he was still able to keep me engaged and inspire about comparative politics. It was the first POL S class I took at UW, and I liked it so much that I'm gonna take some more over the next few years. Not an easy A, but I quite enjoyed the class. Easy workload.
Longs lecture slides are small essays that he skims over in maybe 10 seconds, giving you little to no time to write it all down. He even admitted before a class, I know my slides are content packed, I wouldnt even be able to write it all down in the first try, so be sure rewatch the lecture. The lecture is an hour and a half long.
Lectures are super fun and the readings really interesting and topical. The review below this one is dumb -- I'm in the class now and that's not what he said. He posts the lecture slides before class so he said not to worry about writing everything down from the slides because you get the slides anyways. Lectures are fun to listen to!
Lecture and reading heavy like other POLS courses, but lectures were very packed and we were bombarded with so much information. Did no absorb many slides because he goes so fast and their are so much on them. TA's grading was very lenient. Graded by weekly discussion questions (easy), midterm and final which was a paper. Overall not too bad.
Maybe it was just because this class was offered online for the first time but I did not feel like Long was as good as other reviews suggest. His lectures were confusing, he didn't seem super engaged in what he was teaching, and I felt that the class did not follow any clear plan or course. The final is also 40% of your grade, the midterm is 30%.
Online learning sucks, but he did a much better job than any of my other profs. Fun lectures and good convos in quiz section. Also, lots of discussion of current events to go along with historical cases studies, which made this class feel more relevant than most other polisci ones.
Wow, just heard his last lecture for Crime and Corruption. It was a barn-burner for sure! Best lecturer at UW.
Totally cool end to a quarter learning about crime and corruption that he wants students to apply today in the world. Lots of international focus on the course material, but a good deal on US (founding fathers but also Trump and impeachment). Final exam was actually interesting and topical, mentioned George Floyd (and Martin Luther!).
Had him for both 204 and 371 and he was awesome!
Okay, so i'm not sure why Long gets such great reviews. His ego is overtly inflated and he's rude to students. He's condescending when questions are asked. Furthermore, he goes off on tangents and his whole 371 syllabus appeared disorganized. He made really out-there connections with no substance. It wasn't rooted in content but his own hypotheses.
371/crime and corruption was hands down the best class I took in college.
I wasn't sure what comparative politics even was before taking this class but now I'm thinking of adding Polisci as a minor. Professor Long's lectures were great, even during Covid. Learned a lot about all sorts of countries.
As a Nuero-Diverse student, I need to be in frequent contact with my professors about medical issues. Day 1 in Lecture Dr Long said he is not a Doctor do not talk to him about medical stuff. I dropped that day. Do not take him if you have stuff that may come up and you may need to talk to your professor.
Loved POLS204 and 371 (on corruption).
Took his African Political Development seminar and it was my favorite class in college. A lot of reading (most of it good/interesting) and completely discussion-based seminar. Class ended with unit on Afrofuturism that was really cool, including watching Black Panther. Really fun class.
First polisci class and this is Introduction to Comparative Politics but it's all about "democracy in the modern world" (and a lot about how democracy ain't working in lots of places) -- lots of current events but also cool stuff from history as well as examples from many regions/countries .
I do not know how it's possible that this many students have had such great experiences with him. He is seriously rude to students. Ask the wrong questions in class and you'll pay for it. He will shame you if you don't understand things. Moves way too quickly through the slides and he knows it.
POLS204 made me want to apply for the polisci major.
The Q&A part of class was best given remote learning -- he actually respects students and takes their questions seriously, unlike many profs who don't bother.
Crime and Corruption was dope class, also took 204 with him when I first got to UW, really fun lectures.
The class itself is easy, but Prof. Long is so narcissistic... He primarily assigns HIS own podcasts for course materials, creating a huge lack of diverse views on core topics. His approach is also VERY ethnocentric- for example, promoting Narcos Mexico as accurate to Mexican culture, with this being one of the only mentions of the region in class.
Just turned my last final at UW and excited to graduate! 371 was a high note to go out on despite Zoom this year. Lectures were fun and the reading interesting -- definitely worthwhile to attend quiz section as well.
Taken online due to Covid. Lots of reading and assigns podcasts every week of him talking with other professors. Posts slides but you wont understand context unless you go to lecture. Talks really fast and hard to understand content. Graded on two discussion questions, midterm, and final. Interesting topic but easy to fall behind in class.
Crime and Corruption was the best remote class I took at UW (just graduated). Cool mix of econ, polisci, history, and lots of stuff from current events. The podcast series helped as they don't require reading or looking at a screen, and lots of their guests were really interesting.
204 (Comparative Politics) convinced me to apply for the major -- loved this class!
I really enjoyed Professor Long's class. You can tell he really cares about CP, and lectures are engaging. His class made me want to pursue the major. Don't have your phone out where he can see it and don't make extraneous noise. There is a sizable amount of reading, but you can get by fine without doing all of it. Grades depend on the TA you get
This class is very very interesting. The content is digestible and I found that you can scrape by pretty okay without doing most of the readings.
In Crime and Corruption right now and it's really fun. Took 204 last year and also pretty interesting, but 371 class on Corruption is definitely best I've taken at UW (I'm LSJ and JSIS).
Crime and Corruption was dope class, want to take the Africa classes next.
I found his lectures to be somewhat arrogant and obnoxious. He doesn't have great command of the written word - often his exam prompts were unnecessarily confusing. He was not the worst professor, but I did not feel overly welcome and did not enjoy my time in class.
Took both Crime & Corruption and the Africa data science class and loved both. Definitely lots of reading, and for Corruption, attending quiz section (which I typically find tedious) helped understand aspects of lecture and readings.
I took his class over two years ago, and I still find myself thinking about him. He was the worst professor I have ever had, and I have some wild ones. He makes you feel so dumb when you ask questions. Each of his slides are the length of doctoral dissertations, and he keeps them on the screen for no more than 5 seconds.
I took 3 classes with Long in the political economy option. He takes learning very seriously and wants his students to do well -- hence he doesn't just agree with every question or point made. Def. go to lectures but don't worry about the slides as much -- he posts those on Canvas. African politics/data science class was my favorite.
Loved this class, and word is his version of Intro to Comparative Politics (204) is better than others. Textbook is useful and provides good background (make sure to read the case studies as he doesn't always focus on these depending on the week), but lectures were super interesting and helpful.
He will accommodate your disabilities, he just wants you to go through DRS first bc they know how to handle it better than he does. He can be rude and he doesn't have a huge drive to learn more about outside subjects, but he knows his stuff and is a good lecturer. A bit of a snob but he won't waste your time and the class is very interesting.
Best intro class in polisci sequence; basically global view of politics where you study different regions and countries (some historical stuff but mostly recent cases). Textbook is helpful -- definitely go to lectures. Long cares about his students and wants them to do well, so listen to the advice he gives at beginning of quarter and follow it.
Took Global Crime & Corruption and it was my favorite class at UW. You learn about everything from ISIS to the Nazi Party to drug cartels. Lots of pop culture references too -- Prof. Long knows movies, books, and tv shows, lol.
Prof Long is truly the best in UW's Poli Sci/JSIS departments. He truly cares so much about his lesons and wants every student to learn. I took both his Africa and Corruption class, and had to do a decent maount of reading for both. He can come across as a little rough in regards to how he answers questions, but generally is pushing your thoughts
An amazing professor who's lectures genuinely captured the attention of me and everyone in the class. He is so knowledgeable and easy to listen to. Made learning comparative politics easy to understand with the amount of real world examples he provides.
Professor long's lectures are useless, he reads off of the slides and then just rambles for the rest. He is condescending when students ask questions. The class is interesting but the way it's presented has made me dread it. Graded on a scale where a 77 is a 2.0, one midterm, one final, and section assignments. Pray your TA is an easy grader.
Intro to Comparative Politics was my favorite class this year. Lectures are fun and funny, and the class is super organized and expectations clear which i appreciate since I'm neurodivergent and most UW profs are totally unorganized!
I warmed up to Professor Long over the duration of the quarter, but I was skeptical at first. He talks very quickly and commonly goes off on (admittedly interesting) tangents. You have to be willing to engage as you've never engaged before to get through this class. That said, I appreciate that Professor Long takes his students seriously.
Entertaining lecturer.
I loved this class and the way Professor Long lectures. He has very clear expectations and chooses reliable TAs that help you out a lot. This class is graded by only a few assignments and reading is necessary, but its really interesting and lectures are fairly engaging/entertaining
Prof. Long is spectacularly intelligent and knowledgeable.
Easily the best professor I have had at UW. Very engaging lecturer and beyond smart. Hope to take his classes again soon.
Good lecturer and engages students well. As long as you complete the readings and attend lectures, you will be fine.
I tried to give Prof Long the benefit of the doubt because the class material is just boring to me. But he was so frustrating. He would frequently answer questions with a question or just not be helpful. 70% of the grade is exams, which he gives very little guidance for and the grading was confusing. He also did not allow TAs to do final review.
Prof. Long isn't necessarily a bad professor, however the lectures feel longer than necessary which I feel enables people to just skip the class and take the notes off the slides (which are put on canvas anyways). Make sure to study the course material, majority of your grade relies on the midterm and final.
Took 204 and now in 371 and 362 and have loved all the classes (although all 3 very different, even though his style and assignments more or less the same in each). He does hold students to a very high standard, but gives you everything you need to meet that standard -- have also had good TAs in general for his classes (and polisci generally).
I started this course thinking I would fail but actually did alright. Graded on a midterm, final, assignments (2 of which are dropped). Tests are mini essays with broad questions about the material that have no strict right answer, which I appreciated. Talks very fast during lecture but posts slides.
Clear prof is knowledgable and cares about the course content. Course information interesting but lectures sometimes drag a bit. Readings important, textbooks required- one can be found online. Graded only by midterm and final blue book exams.
This class is really interesting and has great information that applies to various aspects of the world. Doing the readings in my experience was very important to understand his dense lectures. I suggest checking the main focus of units before lectures, so you know how his lectures connect to the overall class, assignments and tests.
371 was a really interesting class, however, the slides were confusing and long. The readings were interesting but incredibly time-consuming (~80 pages for one class) and the book for the final felt shoe-horned in. The exams were open-ended which made studying for them difficult. If you go to lecture and interact with the class you will do fine.
Crime & Corruption was my favorite class at UW, Prof. Long's lectures are fun as are the readings -- definitely go to quiz section to discuss the cases as he doesn't always go in depth on those.
Long's a very good lecturer, and the material in 371 is fascinating. The reading is a lot, but if you focus on the case studies and just skim the textbook, you'll be fine. Grading is mainly a bluebook midterm (defining/explaining terms) and final (two essays). Familiarity with basic econ and game theory helps, although you can get by without it.
Professor Long loves what he studies and really wants to share his knowledge if you're willing to listen. If you engage with the work and study hard you will get something out of this class. Grading is very dependent on midterm and final but they are not impossible and if you study well you will do well.
Menu wouldn't let me pick POLS220 (How to Steal an Election) -- class is so interesting. I'm an CS&E major and took this cuz I needed the credit and it sounded interesting. I guess this is Long's first year teaching it (coinciding with election) and it's totally fun, not that hard, and appealing for non-polisci majors. Full of fun (& true) stories!
Took pols 220 with him and wow this dude assigns too much reading. Each week is like 100-150 pages, way more than any other 200 I've taken. On day one of lecture he also saw someone on their phone and gave a long winded rant about how phones disrupt the classroom environment. He also makes you turn in assignments on paper for no reason.
I've taken two classes now with Prof. Long and he's the best professor I've had at UW. He can be a little egotistical at times but lectures are super interesting and I feel like I learned a lot from each one (he doesn't record so you should show up to them!). His classes always have one final, one midterm, and two homework assignments.
This is my second class with Professor Long, and I can't wait to take him again. His lectures are genuinely some of the best at this school. Beyond engaging, it keeps things very real. He has lots of cool stories about his research as well!
Very clear on expectations, if you go to lectures, participate, and study you should be good.
This class is based off of 2 books, I found the audio book versions instead and played it in the background while going along my day. You can also just look at the slides instead of attending lecture. Got nearly 100% on the final, midterm, and on the class overall. Just make sure to participate in quiz section and study when it counts
POL S 220 How To Steal An Election will be offered Fall'25 and Fall'EvenNumberYears. Reading required before lecture to make sense of slides and lecture, passionate about his research in democratic election integrity, both U.S. and internationally. Only downside is it's not easy to make a personal-academic connection with him during office hours.
Professor Long is very good at directing a focused and reading-intensive class on an amazing subject. He leaves little room for disagreement, but his knowledgeability and straightforward grading practices reward knowledge and clear thinking above all else. I look forward to taking his course on corruption.
Love Dr. Long. He knows what he is talking about. This is a great class if you are ok with getting lectured to for a long time. He also talks pretty fast.
He knows what he's talking about, but he has the speaking cadence and condescending tone of a redditor. I can vividly imagine him telling me to name three Nirvana songs.
Assigns an unreasonable amount of reading. One week we had 195 pages from a pdf and a textbook combined. impossible to manage on top of readings from other classes. other than that hes a pretty good lecturer and I genuinely liked the course structure.
He's kind of intimidating but the lectures are great and the readings are all really interesting except for the Rose Ackerman textbook which is pretty dull. This class is a lot of work (about 100-200 pages of reading a week) but I learned a lot so it felt worth it. 30% midterm, 40% final, 10% short response, 10% short response, 10% participation
readings interesting but tedious; Long is well versed on the subject matter... It's the way he lectures I could not get past. He frequently pauses for effect in the middle of saying the most basic concept. He could be telling me my own name and still reveal each letter like I've never seen the alphabet before. Tone of condescending self-importance.
Took 204, 220, 362, and 371 with him. Hands down best prof at UW.
