Awesome instructor! Super passionate about the material.
Great teacher.
Super easy, basically hands you an A by giving you great review guides before tests. There's a 25% participation grade, but just go to class at least semi-frequently and speak up and you'll be fine.
If you HATE the subject of philosophy (or think you do) this IS the professor to take. He is direct in his lectures, his exams are constructed to assess main points. Lectures are extremely interesting and he is a really relatable guy. Participation is 25%, but Helen Keller could get the full points. That's how engaging discussions get in this class
Take, take, take. You can tell he is passionate about the subject matter and you learn even if you don't want to. He's super easy and let's you know ahead of time everything you need to know for the tests.
This is the ethics class to take. He is really passionate about the material, and he really knows how to get your interest. He lets you know what will be on the exam before the test with great study guides. Exams are pretty straightforward: some fill in the blank and a couple of essay questions (which you get beforehand).
Perfect professor. He is extremely knowledgable of the material, funny, unbiased, and interesting. His tests are straightforward no-nonsense questions that are all covered in class and in the material. I never had a philosophy clas before this, but he really made me interested in the subject.
TAKE!!!!!! It can get boring, especially if you don't do the reading, but overall the material is super interesting. He really wants you to do well. The tests may seem hard but they're not at all. He'll do anything to help you get extra points. I got an A and never read, although I wish I had because the info is so interesting. Best professor ever.
Great teacher. Very nice, laidback and helpful as well. Smart and knowledgeable about the content. Not bad to look at either - all the girls in my class had a crush on him! Learned a lot. Wish I could take more of his classes.
Amazing teacher. I was already semi interesting in the subject and he increased that. The tests are extremely easy and he gives you all you need to make an A. He offers a usually clear lecture that's unbiased and interesting. Definitely take him if you want an good philosophy or Humanities class.
Great teacher! Philosophy of religion is a great class! Learned a lot!
Great Prof!
The best teacher at Auburn! Such a fun and helpful class!
Such a great teacher! Take his class!
He's up there in my ranks of best teachers i've ever had. I took his business ethics class and it was my highest grade and my favorite class. I strongly suggest taking any class that he teaches
Interesting lectures and talked about philosophical stuff other than just business ethics. Gave several extra credit opportunities and easy to get to for extra help with the readings and for studying. Take his classes if you can.
Took Mr. Compton online for a community college. I felt like he really did not care about the class and was not very involved. Philosophy is a hard subject to teach in person, even harder online. The material was presented well, and often times I was more confused than not.
Interesting class that involves a lot of discussion. He is very funny and a cool guy. He tries hard to make the class interesting. He gives pretty easy quizzes and the midterm was easy! He really does want you to succeed and gives a lot of extra credit opportunities by going to philosophy talks. Would recommend!
This is one of the best classes i have taken along with one of the coolest professors. The class only consists of a couple quizzes a midterm paper and the final along with participation and attendance. Though the class can be an easy A, after taking it you will have a valuable newfound understanding of the world.
He was an amazing professor. The classes got a little interesting because of the discussion, but overall it was pretty fun. He is laid back but professional. He's a good choice for an ethics professor.
If you take Bioethics, take Compton! His class is super interesting, and probably one of my favorite classes. He is so willing to help students, and he offers an abundance of extra credit opportunities. He gave a few quizzes, a midterm paper, a final, and there was a participation grade. It's a great class - take it if you can.
Difficult tests but discussions are easy.
I loved Compton! I had him for Bioethics and it was so laid back. We had like 3 quizzes and one essay and the final. He gives TON of extra credit opportunities like a letter grade changer. Definitely would recommend.
Great teacher! Gives you all the tools needed to succeed. Lectures can be kind of long, but as long as you speak up you with get your participation points. Midterm is super easy just go to office hours. Final is a little tricky, but with all the extra credit it balances out.
Teaches in a way where you will actually want to go to class. Lots of discussion to keep it interesting. If you participate in class its an easy A. He has a great sense of humor and is easy-going.
He is the coolest professor ever I loved his class even though I never went. I still got a high B easily.
Great professor. You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. Helpful and easy to talk with. Great choice for ethics class.
Mr. Compton was an awesome teacher for biomedical ethics. Lectured a lot but good with discussions. Quizzes could be a little tough but he is super helpful. If you need a philosophy or ethics try to get his.
Great Professor. Most of his class is discussion based so if you simply so up and give a halfway decent effort into the reading outside of class, this will be a breeze. Quizzes and tests were mostly open notes and he went over material that would be covered in class. Would recommend to anyone needing a business ethics class.
This guy knows what he's talking about. Weekly 10 question quiz on Canvas, midterm and final on Canvas, one 2-page paper on topic of your choice by the end of the term. I don't really get what he talks about in class (although I find it interesting) and I don't do the readings, but I've gotten As on most quizzes and an A on the midterm. Take him!
Took him for an online class while I was out of the country and he was extremely understanding, kind, and timely with his emails. the readings were really interesting and he didn't assign too much. the weekly quizzes and discussion posts were really easy to do well on if you read the pages. really great guy, would love to take again
Dr. Compton is the best professor I've ever taken. He took time to follow up after class through email, was willing to answer any deeper questions I had, and was eager to facilitate my learning.
Honestly one of the best professors at AU. Im taking him online over the summer and while you have to work hard and participate, there are no surprises about his grading and what he wants. Side note: his lectures are very interesting and the readings are too.
Loxley has been my best professor so far and I would highly recommend taking him. I had him for an intro class, so the work demands weren't crazy and he made it overall very easy. I learned a lot of interesting stories and obscure facts about western religions as well as very shaping ways to view religion. Great guy, be sure to take him if you can
I took him with an online course over the summer and it was super easy. We had a reading every week then you had to post on a discussion board and take a quiz. The tests/quizzes are kind of difficult but they're not proctored so you can use notes, book etc.
Dr. Compton is a great professor and is really passionate about what he teaches. Quizzes are very tough and participation does matter. He is accessible outside of class and if he knows your name and knows that you have tried, he will give you the grade you deserve.
Compton made learning different religions very interesting. He tries his best every class to make sure his lectures are understandable. His quizzes are a little tough due to how he words things but if you read the book, you should be fine. He gives fair grades.
Hands down the best professor. This was the only class that I actually enjoyed going to & wanted to show up each day. He really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. Easy A if you show up to class to get the info needed for the quizzes. Would definitely recommend
Loxley is incredible. His classroom is an open conversation, and he makes you want to learn more. He is respectful and respected, and understands the stresses that Pre Healths have on them. Best professor I have ever had. Grades fairly, is merciful in grading if you have a valid argument. Tests are very doable.
I was never bored and was encouraged to learn and think for myself. I found myself asking questions that I would not have if I were not in this class. I often told my friends about what I learned in this class. Its one thing to enjoy a class, but a whole other to enjoy telling others about what you learned, and thanks to him, I enjoyed it.
Hands down one of my favorite professors I have taken. He is extremely accessible and always available to meet up and talk outside of class. I would definitely recommend taking him again.
This is by far the BEST professor at Auburn University. Caring, friendly and intelligent, but capable of pushing you to your intellectual limits. This class is engaging and Mr Compton is amazing.
He is very good at teaching. He gives very good feedback and if you don't understand something then he will explain any time. He cares about his job, and you can tell.
Dr. Compton might be my favorite professor at Auburn thus far. He is extremely intelligent and caring to every student. Attendance is not "mandatory," however he is much more willing to help you out is he sees your face everyday. If you put in the work that he asks for, then you will be fine. Wish I could take him again.
Favorite professor I've had at AU. Really cares about all of his students. Although attendance is not mandatory, I really recommend coming to class as he will be much more prone to help someone he sees trying.
hes a great prof
Dr. Compton was a great teacher and open to discussion. He's willing to work with you if you need help or feel lost in any way with the material in class. He is very specific about what you need to know about the class and for the tests. Warning: all there was for grades were a few quizzes, a midterm, and a final. You want to attend lectures!
Great class and professor. Go to class, take notes, you'll get an A. Weekly quizzes, midterm, and final. Very merciful guy. Wants to give As. Highly recommend. Makes it interesting and fun. Learned a lot and would take again.
This man. What a guy. As someone who is extremely passionate about religion and is planning on getting their doctorate in the subject, I LOVED his class. His lectures were kind of all over the place, but they were extremely interesting. His tests, although specific, were pretty straight-forward, and the final was all multiple choice.
Dr. Compton is a very good prof and very helpful when you don't understand certain concepts. Be warned, he does only do midterm/final for tests but there are a lot of quizzes to make up the difference. I really enjoyed this class and recommend Dr. Compton to anyone who needs a religion or philosophy class.
Most of the quizzes in the class are free response, but he's a pretty easy grader. Our midterm was open notes (and our final would have been too). He is really smart and knows what he's talking about. The lectures are really interesting and he always makes sure the students understand what's going on.
He was a great professor. He was very responsive to students, with most of our time in class being interactive. He doesn't make it hard on you, with all the assignments being pretty easy and straightforward. You have to read a decent amount, but that's necessary for the subject. I loved his class and definitely would recommend it.
You can tell that he is really passionate about ethics. He made the subject very interesting and he truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. There's a midterm, a final, and a few quizzes. Everything was open note. Discussion posts every week but they aren't bad. If you are taking this class make sure you get him as your prof!
Love professor Loxley. Super chill guy. Wants you to show up and participate but it is easy to talk in his class. Take him for any religion class and or philosophy class.
I could not recommend him enough, incredible prof & very passionate about ethics. Knows what he's talking about and very willing to help especially outside of class. I wish every prof was like him and hope to take him again. He is exactly how any instructor should be, please take him if you get the chance. Very encouraging & wants you to succeed
Take this professor if you can. This was easily my least stressful class, and I kept a high A all semester. Do the work and assigned readings and pay attention in class, and you'll make an A. Extremely caring, considerate, and fair. Wants you to participate and discuss in class. Not necessarily an easy class, but he answers any questions you have.
Great guy, very understanding during COVID. Lots of the time class was just discussion based so it was very interesting to just show up and talk about the reading. I haven't taken my final yet but it's all open note and he gives you a detailed video with page numbers before the test. Made my freshman year at Auburn great, I only wish it was FTF.
Professor Compton was a great teacher. You can really tell how much he cares about the class, and how much he genuinely enjoys interacting with his students. The class was really easy and had few zoom class discussions, a few discussion posts, a midterm and final, which were both open book tests. I would definitely recommend.
Dr. Compton is passionate about the material and helping you learn. Class is mostly discussion based with a few discussion posts, midterm, and final. Content is interesting and grading is very clear. Great guy, great class, and would recommend.
Compton was super understand and super laid back. Really nice. All discussion based and really just wants you to speak up and give your opinion. Haven't taken final yet but midterm was a breeze. Take him!!
He is an amazing guy and also a good professor. He is super easy to communicate with and also wants his students to succeed. He is my favorite professor that I have had so far at Auburn, and I cannot recommend him more.
He is an amazing guy who truly cares about the success of his students. He is really laid back and he honestly just likes to engage with his students and make them think. He has been one of my favorite professors at Auburn so far.
100% would take again. Great insight on the class, very growing. Highly recommend this teacher beyond all others at Auburn.
Super chill, super interesting class. Would definitely take any class taught by him
Easily the most understanding/cool professor Ive had all 3.5 years. Hes such a good guy and truly wants the best for you, so it makes learning enjoyable!!! Philosophy is a tricky subject but dr Compton makes it relatable and engaging. Type of guy youd want to get a beer with and pick his brain
LOVE PROFESSOR COMPTON. 10/10 amazing guy, so funny. If you go to class, every assignment will be super easy. Wish I could take everything he teaches
Love this professors. One of the best professors at Auburn. Very caring and relatable. His lectures are very interesting and he is very funny. He is a very down-to-earth guy. Take him if you can! Easy A and actually learned a little bit. Over-all great guy.
Prof. Compton was easily my favorite professor at Auburn. I took two of his courses and both were great. Lectures/class discussions are very insightful while also interesting... He truly cares about the success of his students and is clearly passionate about what he teaches. Wish I had taken more of his classes!
Compton is hilarious and genuinely wants students to learn something from the class and actually think for themselves. I have loved getting to know him this semester and I wish I could take him again. IF YOU CAN, TAKE HIM!!! I promise you won't regret it.
James Compton = amazing! He is hilarious and great at his job! I have never had a professor who cares about the material so much and also his students! He is incredibly accessible and just wants to chat with everyone! He is great at being devil's advocate and wants to challenge you in your beliefs. No matter your religion, this class is eyeopening!
Professor Compton is aware that this class is required for most students, so he doesn't make it harder than it has to be. He gives a free response weekly that is easily graded. Midterm and final total for 70% of your grade, but are also free response and easy. Take him if you can.
Prof. Compton's lectures are great, and I have learned a lot in his class. He wants you to learn and be as passionate about the subject as he is. Gives out a lot of opportunities for easy 100s and knows what Hes talking about!!
Wow is all I can say. As every student is required one philosophy class, Im going out of my way to take Compton again. He is my all time favorite professor. He is VERY funny and knows what hes talking about. He is lenient on assignments. He learns names fasts and our personalities and caters to us easily. A+++
I do not like taking philosophy or religion classes just bc I struggle to understand stuff but Dr. Compton has done an amazing job of explaining things in a simple matter. Participation isn't required but by asking questions in class he can explain things on a deeper level. I would highly recommend taking his class because he's such a great prof.
He was one of my favorite professors. His grading was clear and he did not assign a lot of work. His deadlines were flexible. He knows that you have other classes and respects that. He only has a midterm and a final. He curves both. His grading is clear and he likes to talk about Auburn football, which made me like the class more.
Dr. Compton had some personal issues that resulted in class switching to online, but he made clear his expectations for us. His lectures are very interesting and there is a textbook required but I never used it. He took attendance but it was not for a grade. Dr. Compton is extremely personable and truly cares for his students.
Dr Compton's religion class was one of the most entertaining classes. If you need core humanities, it does not get any easier than him. Although he some of our semester was online, I learned a lot and had a great time in his class. He is hilarious and completely understanding of students. 100% take his class.
He had to miss the majority of the semester due to an illness but was amazing at keeping in contact with us and providing materials to keep us up to date and engaged online. He is a great guy who really has a passion for teaching this kind of stuff. Test, quizzes, and any other work was very easy and beneficial.
He was a great professor and really cares for his students. He does not assign a ton of work and is very reasonable on due dates. Would recommend taking him for sure!
Really chill guy. good atmosphere and was a class I looked forward to
Absolutely amazing professor. Not a harsh grader and tells you what he wants, but you do have to come to class and do the online weekly assignments to get a good grade. Super knowledgeable and knows how to lecture well while keeping it interesting. Might be more difficult if you're not interested in it but if you are I couldn't recommend him more.
great dude and really funny! He isn't a hard ass about anything and great laid back class room envourment. Everything you learn is really intersting and he gives good clear lectures. We did miss lectures due to his personal health condition but he was great about giving us the material to catch up and didnt load it on heavy.
Prof. Compton is a very cool and chill guy! He explains difficult concepts well and he has a clear criteria for grading. Everything about this class is very laid back! definitively not something to worry about. He missed a lot of the semester due to personal health issues, but he made sure to send out online lectures and materials to catch us up.
very easy class, and very easy to talk to and makes class enjoyable, although attendance isn't mandatory
Great professor who cares about students and is very passionate on course material. Would highly recommend
He was an amazing professor and I would gladly take his class again
Dr. Compton has now passed, but he was such an amazing teacher. I was blessed to have him! We came to class waiting for him and then were told of his passing, and all of us had tears in our eyes. I will always remember his influence and passion for religion!
This is my second favorite teacher i've had at Auburn. The first being Bobby Cochran. His class was super easy and he kept it interesting throughout the year.
