Mr. Mailhot is the best! I enjoyed his class soooo much I am taking him again for math 212! Yay Mr. Mailhot!
Mr. Mailhot is a wonderful teacher! He is some what of a dork, but a great teacher. He speaks clearly & if you don't understand something, he will go over it until you understand it! Homework isn't due until a week after its assigned. I would recommend taking him!
Prof. Mailhot is an all around great teacher...take him!!
Great teacher! I've been horrible at math since I can remember, but when I took this class Mr. Mailhot made everything crystal clear! He is very willing to help everyone out. Take the class!
He is very helpful. He kept repeating the same thing over and over again just because he wants us to understand about the material. He gave homework every meeting but they are due every wednesday, Take him. Easy A.
This guy is a good teacher by all means, but not for me. His quizzes are unannounced, there are no calculators allowed. His jokes are a bit lame and he is a bit of a dork. He goes thru the same routine daily and it does get boring. You can ask him any question and he will answer it very clearly. Tough class though. Be Prepared...
He puts the easiest possible questions on tests, no calculators. but they were still kind of hard for me. Unannounced quizzes. 3hr classes are somewhat painful, though he gives a break. Class got disorderly near the end and rushed. He's a nice guy. Lectures are a little tough. Had to study by myself a lot cause he didn't make sense to me sometimes.
He's one of those guys that's somehow a math nerd, yet has an awesome side. He always smiles, he makes sure you understand, nice to everyone. How could you not like this guy?? Very staight forward, but it's math what do you expect? At least u can always expect a friendly smile and help, geez people be thankful for that!
no calculators at all and unannounced quizzes. when u ask for help his explaining confuse u further. homework daily and ur on ur own if u dont understand something. if u dont understand he just says "well you'll get it eventually" and moves on. he's a nice guy but sux as a teacher. sorry Jim : (
I really liked Jim. he's one of the best teachers i've had. he doesnt continue on with class until he makes sure everyone understands whats going on. makes math really easy. i understood everything, for once. good job Jim!!!
This guy has what most Math teachers need nowadays : clarity and helpfulness. A lot of teachers will mutter through crap and care less if students could not keep up with the material. Also, Mailhot's classes aren't hard, the subject is. Math is built to be challenging.
Awesome Teacher! He is great at explaining everything. Willing to go through every problem on the homework, if asked. Very thorough with explanations, very friendly. Important to attend majority of classes because getting his notes are crucial to A's on tests. If you struggle with math, he is the kind of teacher you need to have!
I don't know why anyone would come on here and say something bad about this teacher. He is the BEST teacher I have had at De Anza. Everything is easy to understand-- and trust me I'm not so great with math. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND. Great teacher, easy class.
Prof. Mailhot is not a good choice for high level math class. His tests are hard and the homework he assigns doesnt help you much with the test. He doesnt give extra credit and his grading scale hurts the students instead of helping them. Not an easy class to get an A even though you attend class every day and do all the homeworks.
Mailhot is a great teacher that always asks the class if they have any questions before moving on to the next step. He takes his time and it helps, whether you're fast or slow at learning the concepts. Attending class and doing the homework IS good enough to get an A, as long as you understand everything you're doing.
excellent teacher. he is crystal clear and his exams/quizzes are fair. you really have to keep up with the homework in order to succeed and do well (as are all math classes).
tests are connected with homework and no that easy to get an A at test I am still working on it T T anyway he is still good tho!
He's extremely helpful and wants for all of his students to succeed. I loathe math and he really wants his students to understand and feel comfortable with it. He's a very nice person and intelligent prof. Take notes and study, and you will pass successfully! He's probably my favorite teacher at De Anza:)
No doubt, one of the best math teacher at D.A. I love him and coming to his class. Theres just too many positive cmts to say, but you should definitely take him. Hes like a genius; he can do hard math inside his brain. AND the best thing about him is that he always have a smile on when he teaches.
I loved taking James' class! He is kinda quirky but in a good way! I wish he taught more classes at deanza....... Ive had some bad teachers, and he is by far my favorite!
James Mailhot is a very nice person and an extremely fair grader. He never unfairly takes off points. He allows a page of notes for the final!!
Very Nice and fair professor!
I have had him twice for trig, and then precal. He goes at a pretty nice pace, accepts homework so youre more motivated to do it. And lets you take use 1 page of notes for the midterms. I just wish he taught calculus.
He explains concepts very well. No calculators on tests- which is good! He gives partial credit as long as you SHOW YOUR WORK. Very fair teacher. He gives breaks for the longer classes. Tests are reflection of HW/Quiz/Classwork nothing out of thin air that you havent seen before. Take him, I promise you won't regret it!
He's nice and helpful!
Is friendly but doesn?t allow calculator and has pop quizzes. Doesn?t give homework list at beginning and lets you know assignments due when he gets around to it, sometimes last minute. Shows up late often and keeps students past time every day. Adds test points wrong for many students. Very hard on students but doesn?t apply to himself.
I liked him, he was a pretty good teacher. Only problem was that he is constantly late and he misses class a lot. He gives you substitutes which I did not like. As a teacher, I learned a lot. I felt he was good at explaining and if you have questions he will answer them.
He's good at explaining things, however there were some clear idiots in our class who made it hard for him. Only complaints are that he misses class sometimes, and he gives out the homework before he teaches the material. But overall he is reasonably easy.
He is an extremely nice teacher. I love him. He only missed class because he had a family member in the hospital. He allows one page of notes for midterms, front & back. He grades fairly. Easy A if you attend class and pay attention. He's polite. Hwk is only due every Wednesday. Sometimes have pop quizzes, but theyre mostly 2 questions & super easy
He is a nice guy! do not need textbook in the class, but all homework are on the textbook.3 midterms but you can take a piece of note when testing. This is great! If you are not lasy, and study, easy A!
Mr.Mailhot is a wonderful teacher! I passed with flying colors, literally! He's very nice to his students and his clarity towards his work is terrific. I HIGHLY suggest you take his class. His exams are really easy and straight forward. Trust me, you wont be disappointed! :)
Very clear in his explanations, good layout for the information which helps you really understand the basics before he introduces more advanced terms.
I'm definitely NOT a math person. It takes me forever to grasp a concept... let alone remember how to use it weeks from the lesson. But Mailhot is extremely thorough in the way he teaches; he always asks if anyone has questions before moving on. Probably the best math teacher I've had. I actually felt confident with the work I did in this class.
Buy the textbook! It's used the whole series of precalculus. He was a really good teacher, his explanation of math made it really easy to comprehend, and if you ask questions then theres no way you won't understand how to do a problem. Easy grader on homework, midterms are a little harder but you can have 1 page of handwritten notes
Mailhot was extremely helpful and treats his students as adults. He goes through sections at a decent pace and will slow down for students if they are stuck on a section. He is also very approachable and kind, no ego. Highly recommend him for anyone struggling w/ math 210.
Very clear and concise. Homework assigned was appropriate to what was taught and tested. It does take effort, but it's definitely not a class/teacher that will kill, or even hurt you.
nice, good teacher, he made calculus very easy. recommended. homework is due everyweek, all problems are from the text book. tests are fair nothing too hard, and quizzes are easy too, I want to take 1b with him but he doesnt teach in De Anza for winter quarter. sigh
Very helpful teacher. Math is definately my least favourite subject. I had taken this class in the summer and dropped at as the pace was a little to fast for me so I had a little math phobia coming into his class. He is very knowledgable and does not kill his class with extremely hard exams. Gives a lot of partial credit. Highly recommend
He is one of the best teacher here in De Anza. He takes time to help students and if you have any question, he is willing to help you out. Homework is due every wednesday and quiz is once a week which it is a surprise quiz. One quiz will be drop, and there are 3 midterms and 1 final. Overall, great teacher and i would recommend.
I hate math, but he made math so easy and understandable. Honestly review for midterms and you'll pass. A page of notes for midterms and two pages for the final. 6 quizzes, but drops the lowest score. Takes attendance. Homework due every monday. highly recommend !! Wish he taught 41 !!!
Awesome teacher. Cares about teaching, and does it well. Will spend time with you in office hours to go over problems. Answers all questions in class when asked. In fact, devotes time in class for questions. Very good teacher. Very nice person overall. Show that you care, and you will do great.
A great teacher. As already stated by other raters, always takes time during class (& office hours) to answer any questions and encourages students to ask questions. Homework, quizzes and exams are all pretty straightforward as long as you take notes/pay attention in class. Wish he was teaching MATH 114! Would definitely take him again if I could!
Honestly, one of the worst math teachers I've ever had. How do these people even give him a good score? When you ask him a question, he only explains half way or part of it. He rushes through sections too fat.
best math teacher ive ever had. he does a really good job when it comes to breaking down and explaining the problems. a little fast paste but thats de anza in general. also great patience. highly reccommend
He is a really good teacher. Honestly, I learned a lot. I am usually bad at math but he eplained very well. You must go to class everyday though because he teaches something new like everyday.
Great teacher! very clear and explains well. he drops the lowest grade out of 6 quizzes and does an average of two highest mid terms out of three.recommended!
Best teacher I ever had for Math. Very patient an easy to understand. He takes the time for those who do not understand. Great Teacher I had him in EVC for math 13
Very nice teacher. I have been bad at math ever since...well, forever. He helped me learn a lot. He explains concepts in an understandable way; it's great! I highly recommend this teacher. He lets you use notes on mid-terms and the final.
Dr. Mailhot tries his best to explain difficult concepts. Sometimes he'll gloss over them, but the good thing is he won't test us on those hard ones. 3 exams, graded homework assignments, random quizzes. Pretty fair grader and fairly straightforward exams. Not the easiest class, but if you put in the time and effort, you should be okay.
Tests are based off the homework problems. He grades fairly. Quite surprised at the people who do poorly on his tests. Lectures are well shown and easy to follow, tho often I never really pay attention in his class. Got an A. The Final will really determine whether you are a A student or a B student.
I miss Dr. Mailhot. I like him better than Kejian Shi. I believe he explains way better than Shi. To the end of my days, I'd like to take Dr. Mailhot again for even 2A next year.
pretty good teacher and is fair. It seems like his tests get harder down the quarter so dont slack off and DO the hw. His final is not easy but doable. Lectures are clear and easy to follow. I would say one of the best math teachers I have ever had.
Incredible teacher. Approachable, helpful, and extremely patient. First time getting A's in a math class, and it's all because of him! His classes fill up fast for a reason; take him if you can.
His lectures were very clear and exams were based on homework. he let us use 1 page of notes for exams and 2 pages for the final!! The one thing I disliked was that he didn't give any exams or quizzes or hw back until very late in the quarter, so it was hard to know where you stand in the class. He is very nice and approachable, take him!
he does explain clearly although the only thing I dislike is that he barely gives you partial credit. On test and quizzes if you show that you know the material although you do a minor mistake he takes off most of the points
He doesn't drop people who do not show up to class. I was #2 on the waiting list and he wouldn't add. His lectures were clear. HW through book due once a week.
Hard to keep up with him. Going to fast during the lecture. Quizes and tests are not base on the hw. Dont take this professor if you want to pass this class. Also explaination are not clear at all.
He's nice, but not a good teaching professor. lots of pop quizzes. tests are getting hard every time. very confusing when he's lecture. Over all, i wouldn't recommend taking him because you will get a low grade!!!!
Very clear when explaining a problem. he take the time to explain if you ask him. Good guy. Wish he taught pre-calculus, I probably would of understand it more.
I took him winter quarter. He's always smiling which is so awesome and inspiring. That's what keeps me motivated in his class. His homework sometimes gives problems that don't end up on tests, usually tests are easier than homework. He is also very understanding and compassionate about his students. All in all I recommend him for math. He's nice
Great teacher. He did many practice problems on the board and the test where based on those problems as well as homework problems.
He's a tough teacher. Test reviews are not that helpful and tests are very tough. Also, no extra credit opportunity is given. Very difficult to get an A in his class. However, he is a great person but as a teacher nahhh!
Prof. Mailhot is a great educator - he is incredibly helpful and truly cares about the success of his students. He has been the most helpful professor to date. If you're struggling with math and feel helpless - please take this prof. His guidance is life changing! I am living proof:). Thanks, Mr. Mailhot!!
Mailhot is awesome! He will teach math in detail and he respectfully answers any questions asked. He doesn't treat us as if we're stupid for not knowing basic things. He gives pop quizzes which kind of suck but he is a very easy class!
Jim is the BEST teacher ever. he is so help full and wants students to succeed im not going to lie but the pop quizzes, midterms and even the final is hard but you can have a cheat sheet. expect homework every week but its pretty easy is you paid attention in class. TAKE THIS TEACHER
Mailhot is one of the best math profs I've had. His lectures are clear and easy to understand, he gives a reasonable amount of homework, and his tests and quizzes aren't as bad as some people say (he gives cheat sheets). He makes difficult concepts super easy to understand, and he's really nice about explaining things again if you need to hear it
Took him over the summer. Straightforward and fair. Tests and quizzes are moderate in difficulty.
Does not accept people off waitlist. Random pop quizzes. Hard tests. Don't know your grade till the day grades come out. He does not put in the homework till that day too so you don't know if you are doing your homework right or wrong. Take it with a different professor if possible.
After failing 212, 2 times, I was able to take Mailhots class as a part of the MPS program, he is literally the best math professor I have ever had. I went from failing 212 to completing the class with a B+! The way he teaches is incredible! I def recommend him!
He has pop quizzes and he will drop the lowest one and 3 midterms and a final exam. You can not make up these exams. A lot of homework, but he doesn't grade it, so we don't know the hw is right or wrong. No extra credit.
I took Professor Mailhot for Math 212 and 114, I wish I could take him for every math class I have to take! He teaches math in a way where you leave the room wanting to continue working on math and excited to do so! I got a B+ in both of his classes!
One of the chillest and easiest teacher I will ever have. Teaches the basics really well and pretty lenient and easy grader. Wish he teaches more than 1B though. Homeworks require some work but the tests are definitely easier.
He only really teaches the formulas. As someone who mainly relies on examples, it makes it difficult for me to pass this class (DOES do examples, but hw is WAY different). Calculators aren't allowed on pop quizzes or exams, but a cheat sheet is allowed for exams. He does thoroughly answer any questions in class, but be prepared to teach yourself.
He's a tough grader and he doesn't really teach so be ready to teach yourself. No calculator allowed on pop quiz or test. overall, Wish I took another professor I'm really hoping I pass this class.
He is really a nice guy, but the exam is hard, hard to get A for me. pop quiz is not very hard but is tricky.
He teaches for ego boosting. He'll give you extremely difficult problems that nobody could possibly solve on tests which creates a learning environment of student vs teacher. He takes forever to grade quizzes, tests and homework and does NOT respond to emails. He made us take a midterm on material he didn't teach because he was absent. HORRIBLE.
why cant he teach Math 1C
As a pure teacher, Mailhot is good. He is a good explainer and answers questions cleanly and thoroughly. However, the jump from the problems done in lecture to the problems in the homework is sizeable, so beware. Tests are doable in difficulty. Beware of the pop quizzes!
Professor Mailhot is a great choice for Math 1B. As long as you listen in class and do your homework, the pop quizzes and exams should be a breeze. He's a super nice guy, the class feels very relaxing and is great at explaining hard concepts easily. I highly recommend him.
He teaches well, however there are a lot of downsides to his grading scale. He takes attendance everyday, and that impacts your grade as well if you don't show up, he'll dock of attendance points and if you happen to miss a pop quiz there's no makeup. Those points are so heavy it could drop you a letter grade, so beware. (Happened to me very upset)
Here's the thing, he's really nice however his lectures don't add up with the homework and on top of that he only gives pop quizzes, and no extra credit; his tests weren't bad but he did put problems that he never did examples on--and for someone who relies on examples--his class was set up to make you fail.
Lazy teacher gives HW, but doesn't check it, just marks it for completion.. You wont know what you're doing wrong until the test/ pop quizzes. Class only had full attendance on test day. Spend most days covering things that were not the tests. Easy A if you know the class from high school, pick someone else if you don't.
This guy is a super tough grader, tests are above average difficulty. He allows a sheet of notes on tests. He has pop quizzes so you have to be prepared before every class. Would not recommend.
Even though hes great at explaining concepts in class and youre allowed to have a cheat sheet, the exams are too hard and you wont get an A unless you work super hard. His HW is graded
One of the worst teacher Ive ever took. Im in 1B right now, but when I took math 41, he made me hate math. Thankfully I was able to land on better teachers. Don't take him unless you want to be discouraged! He wouldnt even look at me while talking to me in his office hour, and didnt care about my concerns.
Professor Mailhot lectures are not helpful at all. He always uses the same example and never switches it up. His test are way harder than the should be. He uses questions that are not from the textbook. Many times I ask him a question or send him an email and he doesnt care to respond. DO NOT take this professor
I've taken 4 Math classes with him, his class can be hard, but his lecture is very good, he explains it so clearly that makes it easy to understand. The best way I can put it is that he is super good at teaching, so his expectations are high, but this will make sure that you are prepared for the next class. There are easier Profs, but NotManyBetter
Due to COVID, his exams are so outrageously hard. He believes that every student cheats. Exams and final were insanely more difficult than the homework or quizzes.
Actually, he is not bad at teaching. But he seldom replies to my emails. He is a hard grader and used to pick something unnecessarily. Meanwhile, he always delays grading quizzes and exams until the end. So you don't have chance to improve your mistakes, even details.
His lectures are very clear, and he's really willing to clarify the concepts. The homework is difficult, which is great since it makes you apply everything that you've learned. The tests are relatively easy. There are 8 quizzes, 2 midterms, and 1 final. The one downside is that he doesn't respond to emails. Make sure to ask questions during class.
Solid math prof. His handwriting is a bit messy. HW graded by completion. Quizzes have 1-2 questions and are on the easier side. Drops the lowest quiz out of 8 quizzes. Questions on 2 Midterms and final are normal difficulty, they may be completed over a span of 2-3 days. Lectures are ok but mostly I watched prof Leonard. Grades pretty fair.
During Covid, the classes are synchronous, but he records the lecture so you can watch during your free time. 2nd Midterm and Final were hard
Get ready to teach yourself. This guy has no communication skills. If you're looking for a professor who actually cares about his students success, look elsewhere.
He is good at lectures and makes shorter videos for each section. There is a weekly quiz, 3 midterms, and a final. He doesnt require participation or attendance but I recommend that you do both. More exposure makes the quizzes/exams easier. Its okay to ask questions. He doesnt make you feel dumb. Major con is that he doesnt respond to emails.
The homework he assigned was more challenging than the exam questions, which made us extra prepared for exams. His lectures made difficult concepts easier to understand. He allowed us to ask questions and never made us feel incompetent if we did not understand a concept. He gave detailed feedback for each problem in the exams and quizzes
His lectures aren't the best, but he grades tests and quizzes very fairly. The difficulty of the tests and quizzes also are fair. The homework is much harder than classwork, so it's helpful to go to office hours and ask him for help. As long as you read the textbook, do all the hw, and ask questions as needed, this is an easy class.
Professor Mailhot was a great professor. All assessments had easier problems than assigned in his homework. He is pretty lenient when it comes to grading. If you do the HW you will get good scores on all the quizzes and midterms. his lectures are very clear and he will go back and re explain any Hw or other questions. Great prof. Effort A.
I would say that Mr. Mailhot is a good person and is very respecting. On the teaching part of it though, I would not take him, as his tests are very difficult and he is a very very rough grader. Minor/ silly mistakes WILL cost you critical points on tests. Do not think that test questions will be like the homework ones. They are MUCH harder.
Do not take this professor. He is completely inaccessible outside of class, does not respond to emails, and has no respect for his students. While I ended the class with a decent grade, his class completely ruined my self-esteem and mental health. Save yourself and do not take him.
worst professor ever. does not care about his students. will accuse you of cheating if at least one of your answers is similar to someone else's. ruined my record
If you would like to have an A until the last week of the quarter and then get an F for supposedly cheating on back to back assignments including the final, this is your guy! Probably the worst teacher i’ve ever had and ever will have, please don’t take him unless you want to o lose your passion for learning!
He was so nice in the beginning, but suddenly he accused us by what we didn’t do. He would claim that you cheat even though you don’t do it.
his favorite phrase is “You have received a 0 on the final, for cheating.” without any evidence or response to emails regarding the matter. there’s a reason he’s the dungeon master! so beware! also it’s no surprise 4 people show up to class. I’d rather watch grass grow
Worst professor ever…my grade went from 95% to 58% in the span of a week. He accused half the class of cheating on the final. Please do not take this Professor, he should not be teaching and should consider a different career path.
Don’t take this Professor if you value your sanity. Watching him eat breakfast on zoom was honestly ridiculous. Every morning I would join I heard smacking of his lips.
Take him if you want him to wake you up in the middle of night with a F and accusation by what you don’t do
professor failed me without an explanation. he also loves plotting against his students and there is no trust or communication whatsoever; my classmate had a panic attack over this guy's class. do not take him
Awful professor, hates his students, does not want his students to succeed.
Mid, he's not too bad but his hw is rlly long, tests are kinda weird and lectures are rlly boring, might be the subject more than him tho, he's pretty lenient with hw and drops the lowest quiz score.
BEWARE THE DEVIL, HE ENJOYS TORTURING INNOCENT STUDENTS BY GIVING F FOR "CHEATING" EVEN IF THERES NO PROOF. HE SEEMS NICE AT FIRST BUT YOULL ONLY SEE HIS OTHER SIDE WHEN ITS TOO LATE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
A pretty good professor. His lectures are good and he won't make you feel dumb for asking a question. Tests are tough and weighed heavily but he gives partial credit for some answers. Homework is graded on completion but is only worth 10% of your grade. He delays grading a lot of the work, sometimes up to 3-4 weeks. Overall, not a bad choice.
Great lecturer. Class consists of about half lecture and half helping with the homework problems. Quizzes every thursday with problem sets due the day before. Grades difficult on the partial credit, but he's a great guy. Doesn't record online lectures to make people attend. (might be a red flag for some)
Ignore the spam about cheating, Jim is great! He's a great lecturer with talent for sorting through ideas and presenting them clearly, and always takes time for questions. Prioritize mastering lecture info over the textbook hw, exams will likely be more similar to quizzes. HW harder than exams, all due at the end of the quarter. I had him B-D
he explains concepts rlly well. quizzes every thurs but usually 1-2q long and really easy; he makes it so that the answer comes out to be a nice number. hw is usually rlly hard but he will go over any questions in class. he lets u submit hw late w no penalty.**note that i luv math&am better at it than most ppl so my difficulty rating might b skewed
Great lecturer and very knowledgeable, lectures clear and concise, not really structured, lots of time answering questions. Grades a little harsh on quizzes and exams and is a slow grader, but does return midterms and quizzes. Homework credit for completion, didn't really help me learn bc questions too hard, would've helped more with an answer key.
Your grade is mostly tests and quizzes. He does drop the lowest quiz and you get cheat sheets for midterms but you'll still probably be confused by the exams. He takes forever to grade things, I waited for 5 days after the quarter ended to see my final grade because he hadn't graded quizzes from the first 3 weeks of school. Lectures are okayish.
Literally ends every class off by confusing all of his students. Didn't grade the first couple quizzes til after the final. Lenient, but very unstructured class. Suddenly turned up the dial on the 3rd midterm and then went crazy for the final which caused a couple students to fail. Do not recommend him.
Please don't let the negative comments stop you from taking his class. He is such a nice professor that treats student with respect, pretty funny too. He spends half of the lectures explain the homework from previous week, and half on lectures. Homework is necessary for in-person quizzes. Good luck!
Mailhot is great! The lectures were amazing and he never forgets to bring a smile on his face. Make sure you do the homework because that is what quizzes/tests are based on. Also the class is out of 400, so start strong and finish strong so your grade doesn't get destroyed by a midterm like mine did. Take his class!!!
Pros: amazing lectures, 10~12 hw problems for each section, quizzes are based off of the basic concepts Cons: high weight of exams (midterm+final=75% of total), final is harder than the midterms (but still doable if you remember the previous chapters that you've done on the 1st and 2nd midterm) 1D is not an easy course but with him, it'll be fine.
He grades very strictly and there's barely any leniency in his grading (only lowest quiz dropped). I'm not the best at math, so his class was very difficult to me. Quiz every week, allowed cheat sheets on exams, hw due at end of quarter (not worth many pts, no fluff to ur grade). He is a very nice person though! Rec if you are good at calc!
I like James. Nice lectures, clear explanation, always good feedbacks. I enjoyed his lectures pretty much. Easy quizzes - 1 or 2 simple question; HE ACCEPTED HW TILL THE FINAL DAY! It promoted my procrastinating tho, but that's good. He showed off his cute dog to us at the beginning of the class lol.
I love this one.
weighting: final is 30%, 3 midterms for 15% each, 10% for homework, 15% for quizzes. Graded on work more so than your answer, very picky grader. will take off every point possible. easy midterms but tough grading.
nice prof and flexible lectures. 1/2 class for asking questions, 1/2 class for learning new material. doesnt provide notes. I'm not the best at calc but others got A's. at same time, ik ppl who got B's and C's. calc is a difficult subject in general but i think that he is easy enough and wants u to succeed. like 1/3 dropped after 2nd midterm tho...
Fast-paced as expected, great teacher as far as the lectures and teaching go. He's a good guy. You dont get notes for quizzes, standard amount of calc HW, weekly quiz, 3 midterms, and final.
The material given on exams aren't the hardest, and if you study you will pass this class. However, his grading is a little on the tougher side, and a slight mistake can cost you a fair chunk of points taken off for an exam. Class was well organized and easy to follow, and the syllabus and structure was clear and explained well.
Quiz once a week in person. You do not have any option to make a mistake if you wouldn't damage your GPA. Trust me, don't take his class. But he still is a good teacher, I learn a lot in his class.
Not easy class. But he is a no bad choice if you really want to learn.
He's a very picky professor. Even though the answer is correct, he will take off as many points as he can.
Tests are easy. Just make sure you avoid calculation mistake.
Definitely my favorite math professor I've had! His lectures are great, it really feels like he knows exactly how to set the pace. I used only take math because I had to, but honestly learning felt like such a breeze in this class that I'm thinking I want to minor in math. Tests aren't too difficult, but grading isn't too lenient either.
Very good lectures and easy tests. I would say it's an easy A class. Homework deadline is last day of class. Convenient for procrastinators like me.
He is a good choice if there are no other options.
Took his Math 2B in this winter. He had a high expectation for us and warned that the Math 2B final would be the hardest one we'd ever taken. It certainly lived up to that, as the final was an absolute nightmare. The final average is below B. If you are looking for a surprise and challenging final, feel free to take his class. Otherwise, stay away.
Do NOT take this class if: 1) YOU STRUGGLE WITH MATH 2) You're not willing to put in 110% effort for an A 3) You're not good with self-studying Lectures are hard to understand and unorganized. There is no clear structure, therefore making it difficult to follow and learn. Quiz problems are deceptively easy, midterm problems are incredibly hard.
VERY CHALLENGING FINAL!!!
Took him for 1c and 1d, had As for both. Lectures are good but u need to spend extra time learning outside of class. 1 easy quiz each week 3 midterms and 1 final (no calculators, similar to hw). Hw are optional so u don't need to complete it for full points (especially word problems). This saves time to study for tests! He curves at the end too!
He is a good lecturer for Math 2B. Unlike other classes, which I had to self-study, I actually learned and listened to his lectures. You have to do the homework by a soft deadline (no deduction for late submission). He'll answer questions for HW in the class, which helped me a lot. Math 2B was enjoyable in his class.
Didn't take Calculus for a year but his lectures were structured well and easy to understand so I picked it up again quickly. Quizzes are easy since he writes them himself. As long as you attend lecture and do the hw, you should get a high grade. A very engaging and competent professor!
Kind and approachable. Taught very closely to the textbook. Spends beginning of class explaining hw/questions, rest on lecture. Weekly quizzes, 3 midterms, and final. Very test-heavy. Writes his own tests. Allowed 1 pg notes on exams. Gives partial points (work > answer). No late penalty for hw, but must do it to do well on exams & quizzes!
What surprised me the most was that he was able to teach the entire linear algebra curriculum within a single quarter without it feeling particularly rushed. Additionally, homework can be submitted late, but you wouldn't want to accumulate too much towards the end.
Get ready to complete a ton of HW
Please don't take. This professor goes out of his way to make the test harder for you.The 3rd midterm was held a week before the final. The last question was about finding the derivative of the area of a sector. Rectangle is the only shapes we talked about. No one got a perfect score, half the class failed. His class seriously ruined my mental health
stressful.
His lectures were very well-organized. There are three midterms, weekly quizzes, and one final exam based on the homework. The homework is more challenging than the exams, but if you understand the homework well, you're likely to get an A.
Crazy teacher; Gave you unnecessary pressure
He will go out of his way to answer your questions in class, not through emails. It was a generally easy class for me. I didn't pay much attention in class and kinda slackoff, so I ended up with an A-.
He was a really nice person but in my experience he didn't give really good explanations on topics. There was a quiz like every week and I thought I did amazing on a quiz and I got a 75% bc I got one question wrong. A lot of hw. Test is harder than what is talked about in class. He showed us a graph once and then it was on our test for like 3 qs.
An 80% is a C in this class. Please pick someone else.
This guy is a joke
Exams are difficult, and the time is too tight. Don't take his class if you care about your mental health and GPA.
Very nice teacher, if you like math, you should definitely take his class. Very good at teaching as well, he explains the concepts very clearly.
Don't be dismayed by some of the reviews here—James Mailhot is a good math professor. College-level math is difficult and if you have a tough time with it you'll have a tough time in his class, just like you would with any other professor. But he's a good lecturer, his tests are fair, his grading is lenient, and he answers students' questions.
Very tough grader
I really enjoyed his lectures. They were very engaging and clear. He provided great examples, and I learned a lot by simply attending the lectures. The biggest problem with the class was that the test questions were different from what we worked on in class and homework. Even though I received an A, I was stressed throughout the quarter.
Professor Mailhot explains everything very thoroughly and even reviews important topics from previous lessons, which really helps with understanding. There were weekly homework and quizzes, but the workload was manageable. He's also very approachable and answers questions really well!
The professor is a good lecturer, but grades harshly, with no calculators allowed on tests/quizzes. Exams are majorly weighted (3 midterms, 15% each), and homework is worth 10% based on completion. Quizzes are pretty frequent as well. The class is very test-heavy and stressful. I don't recommend it if your math foundation isn't strong.
Good lecturer-answers questions-overall a chill dude-No notes for quizzes(which happen almost weekly)-1 pg of notes 2 sides for midterms(3). However - No calculator for quizzes and tests-his examples in lecture doesnt match the hmk- and the hmk doesn't really prep u for the quizzes and midterms. No review sheet too prior to quizzes/tests. good luck
In this class, you're going to be completely on your own. The lectures are vague, the explanations don't stick, and half the time you can't even remember what was covered. NO EXTRA CREDIT, NO CALCULATOR ON all the exams with ONLY 1 HOUR for the midterm, so yeah good luck!
This is the final Calculus course, so don't be too hard on yourself. Do me a favor and consider choosing another Prof instead
He's pretty chill, but not forgiving when it comes to grades. Attendance isn't mandatory, but helpful for weekly quizzes. Absolutely NO opportunity to really raise your grade if you bomb a test. He'll drop your lowest quiz grade.
Hmk assignments barely add to your grade, weekly quizzes + 3 midterms + final are the main factors to your grade. He's a great lecturer but the HMK doesn't line up with future quizzes, and quizzes don't line up with future tests. Very harsh grade on quiz/tests. Class takes a deep spiral down after derivatives and when you learn applications of d/dx
