This class is all lecture, and your grade is based on three tests, the final, and one group paper. If you read, pay attention, and study what he tells you, you should do just fine.
Hard class but if you do the work and read you'll do fine. He has a lot of good stories that he tells. If you struggle with accents than you might have difficulty understanding him. only 3 tests and one group project. easy class if you put forth the effort and he is an overall good professor
I found Mr. Makokha's class to be reasonably easy, but you do have to really study for his tests. There also aren't many grades (4 Tests, 1 Essay) so you can't really afford any big mistakes. He is very funny which makes the class enjoyable even if you aren't interested in economics.
this guy is horrible, no one in the whole class was able to score an A. his accent was so bad nobody was able to understand him, when he gets mad its just hilarious, his lectures are garbage and his test reviews are horrible, and the tests aren't made by him, they're one of those online textbook exams which are hard to understand
Maybe the best professor I have ever had. He tries so hard to be engaging, he is funny, keeps your attention, and really cares whether or not you understand the material. He is extremely fair. Ample extra credit opportunities. And yes, the tests are from the text book, they can be challenging, but that's a DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENT. Not his choice.
I go to a university and took his class in the summer and he is my favorite professor by far. He is extremly helpful and truly cares if you understand it or not. He is also funny and keeps the class interesting. If you read the chapters and do the review then its easy to make an A.
this teacher is awesome, if u read even the slightest bit and look over the review sheet you will make an A. He is also funny and likes to let you out of class early. Not to mention he knows what he is talking about and is good at teaching.
hillarious. really cool guy. his lectures are interesting, and has a good way of explaining economics at a student level. he has an accent, but not very hard to understand. really funny, fun, and entertaining class. definitely take it!
very funny. cool lectures. but sometimes hard to understand. attendence counts so be there. other than that, very easy. easy tests, jus go, do the review. and your good.
I took both macro and micro with James Makokha. He's a great teacher and explains economic concepts well. He is an example of a man who loves what he teaches. The lecture is fun. Read the book, go over the review.
Very good teacher, I had him for ECON 2301 and 2302! One of the best professors that I have had. He is extremely funny, and he explains material thoroughly. He also dresses pretty well.
I don't recommed this professor at all. His classes don't prepare you for the tests, so he has to give out a review sheet before exams. If he didn't take attendance no one would come to class because you have to do all of the learning for the tests on your own. He is very agressive and likes to put students on the spot.
Took for macroecomonics. Great teacher with a great sense of humor. Dont be fooled by his claims of driving a crappy car...he has a Caddy. As long as you read and participate in class, an A is a realistic goal.
james makokha is a great teacher. whoever said his classes dont prepare you for the tests was wrong, they completely do. his lectures provide clear understanding. the test reviews merely reinforce what you have already learned. if you come to class and do work you can do well. He is hilarious and very respectful of students. Don't take anyone else
He was a great instructor. Passionate about economics and could relate the subject to anything. He dresses nice and will ask you questions not to embarass you, but to check if you are on the same page. Read and you will be good. Go to every class and recieve extra credit opportunities
He is a great instructor. Passionate about economics and could relate the subject to anything. He dresses nice and will ask you questions not to embarass you, but to check if you are on the same page. Read and you will be good. Go to every class and recieve extra credit opportunities. Oh yeah he is funny
very entertaining teacher. his method of teaching was through examples, although the material came straight out of textbook, he will explain the terms that doesnt make sense. highly recommended. easy A and a pretty fun class.
This was my favorite professor at preston campus. He is the best teacher ive ever had. He is very entertaining and there is never a dull moment in class. You will be suprised at how funny he is. His test are hard but he does cover the material. He will call on you in class to test your knowledge. I wish I could take his class again! Easy B!
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR OF ALL TIME!! VERY NICE AND FUNNY!!! CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. GIVES A STUDY GUIDE FOR ALL TESTS GIVES EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS AND CURVES THE TESTS!!! AWESOME PROFESSOR!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
laid back, puts u on the spot sometime but only about stuff u should know, sometimes hard to understand explanations overall an easy class, little to no real hw, 1 easy project and a few test
Wonderful professor, Very helpful, and handsome!
SERIOUSLY THE BEST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD. MADE CLASS ENTERTAINING UNLIKE MOST TEACHERS CARE ON DOING, THIS WILL BE MY SECOND YEAR STRAIGHT HAVING HIM
He can be genuinely funny at times and although he can get distracted by NFL sometimes, he still manages to teach the material quite well. Keeps it interesting and maintains a friendly environment. Do what little homework he assigns!
He genuinely funny. Sometimes his accent can be a little hard to understand, but he writes words on the board so you know what hes talking about. Hes very patient with his students. He tries his best to help them understand certain concepts by using current issues. Overall, he is a great professor! I would highly recommend!! :)
BEST PROF EVER!!!! only 4 exams that were multiple choice and group papers. all you need to do is study definitions from the book for the exam. review is very helpful! very funny guy, laid back, makes course very easy. in high school, i hated econ more than any other subject. now its my favorite!
Mr Makokha is an AMAZING professor, ive already taken both macro- an micro- through him an wishes he taught additional courses. MUST TAKE for economics. His test are straight from the review and his lectures are full of his jokes about kenya, dodge neon, babies mommas, proud texans and lil wayne lyrics; ha in the end youll know what im talkin about
He is a funny professor but everyone in class is fair game for his teasing. Make sure you come to class everyday.
GENERALLY LIKE HIM AS A PERSON, BUT DOESN'T TEACH MUCH IN CLASS - WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER TO DO SELF-STUDY OR ONLINE AND KNOW THAT I WOULD HAVE TO DO ALL THE WORK MYSELF - CLASS WAS FUN AND ENTERTAINING, JUST DON'T EXPECT TO KNOW WHAT IS ON THE EXAM UNLESS YOU READ ALL THE CH. & STUDY WITH REVIEWS & MYECONLAB.COM (FYI: EXPENSIVE BOOK & ONLINE LAB)
Not a very good professor. Class is just 20-30 min. does not teach much and his tests(4) are so tricky. like to put you on the spot many times. Not recomended at all. I made a B and I study a lot.
Not a very good professor. Class is just 20-30 min. does not teach you much and his tests(4) are so tricky. like to put you on the spot many times. Not recomended at all.
Interesting Professor who teaches well and makes the subject easy to understand. Exams get review sheets, which makes for easy studying. I suggest you take Mr. Makokha for economics!
Great teacher! Fun, knowledgeable, applies subjects to real life situations so that you will be able to understand the material. Doesn't take up homework, grades are based of off four tests. Must study if you want an A but besides that you will love him! Super Funny. Definitely would take him again.
Doesn't teach much in the class, but if you ask he will cover what ever you need. Very funny guy.
He's a hoot. He's from Kenya & has an accent but he jokes about it & tells you he'll repeat anything. He loves to joke around but if you pay attention you'll see how they pertain to economics. You need to go to class and you need to read the text. Tests can be tricky because you need to understand not just memorize. Tough but worth every minute!
He is a funny guy but not a good professor. No powerpoints, no homework, feel like he is not prepared. The class average on exams are low, which means no one really learned anything other than his jokes, which has nothing to do with economics. You don't learn much with him.
He is from Africa, and uses this as advantage in his lectures. He jokes arround a lot, but wants all his students to do well. Attendance is counted and tests come from the textbook, although he gives review sheets with what you need to know.
He's really easy and funny
Tough to get his accent at times, but does go over the material well, definitely have to read the book for the tests, not a lot of grades
do not take his class....you will regret....he likes to put you on the spot all the time.....not a good instructor...do not explain clearly....
Noticeable accent; understood 90% of what he said; NO BIGGIE. He teaches whats on the test; helps for an EASY A. Got an A WITHOUT the book. Easy to take notes. Usually when in front of the podium he?s saying examples/stories. When behind it, he?s reading from his notes/book so TAKE NOTES THEN. Always GO TO CLASS. 4 tests each w/ 50 MC questions
I took his micro class last fall. This guy is really funny in a subtle way. He lectures and doesn't use the book a whole lot. I took limited notes, skipped here and there, and was late a lot as it was a morning class, but I easily got an A. One thing I should admit though is that I LOVE economics even before taking this class. Cant wait 4 macro!
this dude, is very hard to understand bc of his accent. i didnt like him in the begining and towards the end i started warming up to him. but over all he doesnt lecture us very well and i really didnt feel like i learned anything in his class.
He gets sidetracked very easily and always talks about Kenya, where he is from. He is a actually a very funny guy. You likes to pick on people in class so you better know your stuff. He gives study guides that are fairly similar to the tests.
Took Mr. Makokha last semester for 2301. Had to take his class again. Awesome teacher, extremely helpful. Will answer any question you have. Funny and always jokes about beig from Kenya. Does have an accent but it is extremely easy to pick up on. Gives a study guide to every test that comes straight from the book. Couldn't ask for a better teacher!
TAKE THIS CLASS. Really nice and understanding, great sense of humor, early release, STUDY GUIDES, tells you what you need to know, replaces lowest test with HIGHEST..you read that right. Extra credit essay option, reviews anything you don't understand. Really enjoy his silly yet practical analogies for economics.
AMAZING TEACHER!! Take this class and you will not regret it :)
HE WAS MY FAVORITE TEACHER!!! PLEASE TAKE HIM!!!! HE IS THE BEST!
GREAT TEACHER!! He is hilarious and makes you want to go to class. Always entertaining, may not teach the material the greatest though. The only grades are the tests which are easy and follow the review almost word for word if you study and do them.
I took him for both 2301 and 2302. He's very nice and hilarious. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should keep up with whats going on in class to do well. I ended up with an A in both courses. Really easy if you try. The review is pretty much the exam. Alot of extra credit. TAKE HIM!
He's great, I don't most professors at this college but this is the easiest class ive taken so far. He gives you a review for the exam and it is literally the exam..if you dont like this guy, you probably just got out of high school
Professor Makokha is great, I took both his classes, one after the other and I liked it. He is very funny, makes class interesting.Lots of extra credit, reviews.Take him you wont regret it.I failed econ last semester but with him was so easy and I learned a lot, he makes it so easy to learn, because he uses every day examples. Take him, he is great
Reviews and extra credit. Straight forward tests. Hilarious anecdotes. Attendance is not mandatory but he will make you want to come to class. TAKE HIM!
Professor Makokha is a good professor. I took him for both economics classes and did well in both. There are minimal grades with 4 tests. He gives a clear review prior to the tests to help prepare you. His jokes are pretty funny and keep you entertained. Good Professor
He tries to make class lectures fun. Prepares reviews prior to every test. Lacks general organization/ does not post or return grades online- leaving your grade to be surprised. Responds to emails slowly. He is an easy/ understanding professor however, not the best teacher of economics.
He is hilarious and always makes class entertaining. Usually lets class out early but attendance is not mandatory. Gives reviews for each test that match closely with the tests. But he is hard to understand at times and does not post ANY grades online so your grade is a surprise at the end
Nice teacher and tries very hard to help kids succeed. He returns emails pretty quickly and is always in his office. His class is not easy though. A lot of studying for test is necessary and his reviews are crap compared to test. If you study constantly you will be fine. But if you don't go home everyday and read and take notes you will struggle
He's such a sweetheart. I guarantee he'll make you smile, his class is so easy too! I EASILY got an A! You dont have to love econoics, just listen to his little quirky jokes and you'll learn a lil and read the study guides
Such a great professor! He is hilarious. Gives reviews for every test. Some of the material is boring, but he wants everyone to succeed and will give you multiple chances to raise your grade. TAKE HIM!!!!
Laid back professor, easy class.
Very nice teacher, tries his best to keep the class interested. Overall very laid back and is considerate if you turn in work late. You have 3 exams and one group paper. Just go over the review he gives and you'll do fine.
He is my favorite professor of all time! I have never been so interested or inspired! He not only teaches economics, but you will learn so much about the world and life!!
Great teacher. Involves his students in real-world examples to make sure they understand what is being taught. I would definitely take his course again. If you read the text, you will be fine. If you don't, you will probably fail.
Really knows the subject well and he is hilarious, which keeps you interested! Really wants to see his students do well. 4 tests and 1 group paper. If you study the review he gives you for the test, you will get an A. He takes attendance everyday but it doesn't necessarily factor into your grade. Need book to study for tests!!
His lectures are confusing and all over. He just stands up there and just keeps talking in circles. He is a funny guy but a horrible teacher. You will have to read the book & learn on your own if you want to learn anything. Test questions are confusing cause it could be either or answer. Does not post grades, so you have no idea what you have.
He's a good professor. Three test and the final (all multiple choice and a review is given for each) plus the group essay. Easy grader. I never opened the book besides when I did the reviews and yes do them, they'll help. He's funny, lectures are boring but he'll throw in jokes every now and then. I would recommend him indeed.
So laid back and chill.
Very laid back. four tests and a group essay that is super easy with a lot of time to complete. Clear about what he expects from you. He really does want you to pass so he gives a review for each test that will ensure you make an A if you do it. I made a B with little to no effort and showing up to class 2 times a week out of three times.
His lectures are hilarious and he is able to maintain attention of all of his students while successfully teaching economics at the same time. He is very helpful and gives test reviews, he makes it very hard for you to get lower than an A, at the end of the semester he even gives an extra credit opportunity to boost you up a whole letter grade.
He was very funny and nice, but when it came to the tests they were super confusing, due to the way that he worded questions. Make sure you read for this class because he hardly reviews everything in the lecture. He gives review guides for tests. I personally would not take his class again just because his tests were hard and super confusing.
Very very easy class. Just show up and listen to what he has to say. Most of the test questions are answered during his lectures. No homework and no textbook. EASY A.
He will ramble most of the time in his lectures, but they are pretty funny. They are not, however, very helpful for the test, but the book makes up for that. Tests are pretty close to the reviews, but pay attention to the graphs he gives in lectures. Very funny, quick to rabbit trail, and easy on grading.
Honestly, I learned nothing from him. However, it was an easy A with little effort. Grade consists of 4 tests and one group project (group project is a disaster). He will ramble about nothing HOWEVER his test reviews are the exact same thing as the test, so as long as you do them your good. Extra credit is given. take him!
He is not the best teacher, although he is easy. You can skip class with no penalty. His lectures are somewhat boring and lengthy. Dont really learn anything. Taught myself everything out of the textbook. Tests are pretty hard, but not if you know the material well. A lot of people got B's. No homework. Must have textbook.
Take his class. It's an easy A and he will keep you laughing the entire lecture. Attendance isn't mandatory and he gives study guides for exams.
I've taken both his Macro and Micro economic classes and they've easily been some of my favorite at Collin. He is funny and helpful if you need him to be. He's understanding about attendance and gives a well-written study guide. Tests are a little tricky but if you follow the study guide you'll be fine. Plus he drops the lowest test grade.
Makokha is a great professor, you want him for both Macro and Microeconomics. He's funny and he genuinely cares about Economics and for students to learn from it. He gives a review for every exam and if you study them you'll get an A for sure..
Love love love Professor Makokha! He genuinely cares about his students and their success. Very knowledgable and makes economics so fun and exciting to learn. You want him for both Macro & Micro! Gives test reviews, and attendance for class will make you successful! My favorite professor by far! Really leaves an impact on you.
Inspirational, excellent professor
Very easy class, all test are multiple choice and 50 questions. The only problem is he talks a lot and gets a bit off track but everything remains topical on economics and is at least funny and interesting to listen to.
Great professor . Very inspiring and knows how to simplify economic concepts. Very fair grading. A lot of extra credit. Drops the worst grade.
Prof. Makokha is the most caring, funny and respected teacher. He tries his best to make you pass this class. But let me be honest, this course isn't easy and the his tests aren't easy either. You need to study from the book. His study guides are somewhat useless.
I enjoyed the wintermester class. Professor Makokha was hilarious! He kept us awake the whole time. I highly recommend him for micro.
I had Professor Makokha for the Wintermester, he was absolutely amazing , really cares about his students and the subject, gives extra credit and all of his test are 50 multiple choice questions straight from his lectures, attendance is a must. Professor Makokha is a amazing person and an even better professor!!!
Professor Makokha is a great professor who gives a clear layout of the learning schedule. Make sure you're there the class before the test because he gives you a review that goes over everything on the test. There's exact copies with answers on quizlet. Only gripe I have is a group research paper worth 1/5 of your grade.
Lord have mercy. Makokha is VERY lecture heavy. Loves Kenya. Taken him for ECON 2301 and 2302. Grades are based off Tests and a Group project. He's a cool guy and funny, makes Econ less boring. No Homework ever which is a big plus.
The class is easy, but oh so very boring. Dr. Makokha, while a genuinely lovely person, seems to operate at a slower pace than the rest of the world. Everything he does, he does slowly. Which makes class drag on... and on... and on. If you can deal with that, then take this class. However, if you like a normal or faster pace, avoid at all costs.
Lord have mercy, this Kenyan is a solid choice for anyone looking for an easy A. The textbook is vital, attendance is definitely not. His lectures are based off the book, and honestly his lectures are very boring with little gems of comedy sprinkled throughout. I have made an A by studying the book and showing up for test days only
I really enjoyed taking professor Makokha this semester. He keeps his lectures interesting and also provides you with everything you need to do well in the course. You can tell he is extremely passionate about teaching and wants his students to do well. He was a really great professor! Highly recommend!
Gets off track telling stories about Kenya but it always relates to economics. 3 tests, easy if you do the study guide. Go to class or you wont do good. Can get boring sometimes but he keeps it interesting as possible. Will call you out if your on your phone in class. Basically pay attention and show up everyday and you will get an A.
Professor Makokha's class is definitely worth taking! I've taken Micro & Macro economics with him and easily passed both. All he asked is that you show up, participate in his reviews and study the study guide before the test. He's funny, truly cares about each student and gives each student every opportunity to pass. Wish he taught everything!
Textbook will really help you out especially when it comes to the reviews. Attendance is taken daily. There's three exams and a final which is easy. One group research paper that's also super easy.
Professor Makokha is one of the best professors I've had at Collin. He makes his lectures easy to follow and sticks to the material you will need to know for the tests. He gives reviews before every exam and if you study them well you will get an A. Econ was a challenging subject for me and he made it very easy to understand! 10/10 would recommend.
Professor Makokha's class is definitely worth taking! I've taken Micro & Macro economics with him and I really enjoyed his class. All he asked is that you show up, participate in his reviews and study the study guide before the test. He truly cares about his students and he's is very funny.
Professor Makokha is probably the nicest professor I've taken. His lectures can be interesting and contain mostly everything you need to know on the test. I took him for summer and grading was solely based on 4 tests which are easy A's just by studying a little. He also gives a study guide out which guarantees an A if you do it. I would recommend!
Professor Makokha is my favorite professor I have ever had! He is so intentional and truly cares for his students. Show up for class, study notes for tests, and pay attention, and you will pass. He also gives extra credit towards the end of the semester. I would absolutely take him again. Sad to be leaving his class honestly!
I loved his lectures. His humor is what made the class enjoyable. Occasionally, he picks random people to explain certain topics about economics but don't take it the wrong way. He cares about economics and wants his students to succeed after college. If I remember correctly his grade is based off 4 exams and a group project (4-8 page essay).
Get ready to teach yourself because he is useless as a professor. All of the comments on here are lies, DO NOT TAKE HIM. I retained nothing from class, I only went for attendance points, and took notes from the textbook during class. He also assigns a group essay and gives basically no instructions for what he wants. Never. Again.
Best professor at collin, he makes coming to class fun.
His lectures are for the most part, long and useless. Going to class felt like a waste of time. There are 4 exams and 1 group essay. The tests are easy because he provides a review the class before. Answer and study the reviews with the textbook and youre good to go. Hes a nice man but his jokes get repetitive. Hes soft spoken 85% of the time.
Ok, so this professor is too laid back, u have to teach yourself and does not post grades even a week after the semester ends
He is a really sweet man. Has funny, entertaining lectures. YOU WILL NEED THE TEXT BOOK. I didn't purchase it and regretted it. I did not make the grade I wanted because of it. He cares about his student's success.
Really sweet Kenyan man ! I would definitely recommend taking his class!
He is a hilarious professor. There is never ever any HW. The reviews are pretty similar to the tests and the almost all of the answers can be found on quizlets/online. There is one group project given in the beginning, pick your people wisely. He is very sweet with an easy to understand Kenyan accent. 5 tests, the final is not cumulative. Recommend
Absolutely one of my favorite professors. Super nice guy, and loves to make jokes to keep you interested in class. No homework, only 4 tests plus the final. You don't NEED the textbook, but it will definitely help in some lectures. Highly recommend!
This guy is awesome... he really cares about his students and their success. He has four tests and a group project.. that is it. He gives reviews for the tests... the answers to the review are on Quizlet. He is so sweet but his lectures are completely pointless. I have fallen asleep in his class. I recommend this class if you're aiming for an A.
Easy A in this class
Exams are textbook based, and he gives reviews beforehand. Very funny, cracks jokes throughout his lectures. There is one group project due before the final.
Professor Makokha is the one of the most caring professor I have met. He cares about the success of his students. His lectures are interesting and funny. Only 4 multiple choice tests and a group research paper throughout the semester. Understand the things on the study guide and you'll get an A
He is a good prof, I like him. He respect student and if you have any concerns, you can go talk to him. He is nice and care his student. I would take his Econ 2 this year.
Nicest and most genuine professor out there. Constantly talks about his little village in Kenya and how he cant pronounce a lot of english words. We had 4 tests and 1 essay as our only grades all of which were very easy. I enjoyed going to his class and HE ALWAYS LET US OUT OF CLASS SUPER EARLY!
Amazing professor, his tests felt harder for ECON 2302 compared to 2301 but I guess that should be expected. Review answers are on quizlet and the extra credit essay is really helpful. His lectures are not really helpful, use the textbook instead.
He is honestly such a good professor. He is willing to work with you and is very kind hearted as a person! The test review answers are on quizlet. Just do that and read the textbook and you wont need to show up to class. But youll want to because hes very sweet and funny!
Best Teacher ever. I took him for econ 1 and then again for econ 2. He cares about his students and make sure everyone is set up for success. His reviews are amazing, lectures are interesting, and he uses real world examples. 4 tests including the final, one group project, pick your group wisely, and an optional extra credit project.
He gets off topic so much & only covers half the test material so you have to read the book. He only gives 4 test with 1 extra credit paper. I studied as best I could with his basic review & the test questions were worded tricky. I felt like going to class was a waste of time and I didn't learn much. I wouldn't recommend if you want something easy
Professor Makokha is nice and funny however I find that his lectures tend to be pointless. Although he is teaching the material, he gets side tracked and tells stories. If you take him, make sure to study his study guides and know the material and not the question. All of his tests are worded way different than the study guides. teach yourself.
He doesn't cover everything that will be on the test, and going to class is kind of pointless since you have to teach yourself everything at home. Sure he's funny and nice but that's not going to help you pass. If you're someone who learns pretty good on your own just by reading the book then go for it, if not this isn't the instructor for you.
He is a very good professor and has lectures which pretty much go over the test. He is very straightforward and makes class very enjoyable.
He has got to be one of the BEST professors I have ever had at Collin College. He actually cares about his students and wants them to learn. Take his class!
He is the Best of the Bests; funny, helpful and caring. If you cannot pass his class means that you are either lazier or loser, otherwise if you try at least at a medium level, you have chances to succeed. So take this professor to experience a nice Econ class.
Makokha is an amazing professor. He's very funny, but he makes a lot of the same jokes. Doesn't mean I enjoy it any less each time he makes a joke about being related to every Kenyan celebrity. Also, there are only 5 grades: 3 tests (he drops the lowest), a group paper, and the final.
First of all, coming to class is a waste of time. You come in, sit down, he takes attendance, and lets you leave. Second, he is all over the place so I can't follow what he's saying, ever. Average test grade every test was failing. If you are looking for a class where you do absolutely nothing but fail every test, take this one.
Professor Makokha just told our class stories that were somewhat relative to Economics. He repeated himself almost every lecture, adding very few details about the exams. Once in a while he told us to read a chapter. My class was the only one that he didn't have a canvas set up for so we didn't know our grades until finals were already over.
Honestly an amazing person. He will really work with you. He genuinely cares about his students and thats hard to find in teachers nowadays
WORST PROFESSOR EVER
Amazing professor. Has so many stories and anecdotes from his life that make class fun. If you are semi-motivated and go to class, you should get an A.
