Very effective lecturer, wants students to do well, very helpful
i loove james. he is so cute and really wants his students to do well. has entire lecture notes for you to follow along with. take a class with him.

this guys class is pretty cool and he's an all around good guy his brittish accent is funny too
Best microeconomics teacher. The material is so boring but he makes it so easy. His notes are online posted and he follows them in his lecture to every detail. Everything is very straight forward and easy. Good guy, hes young- Funny british accent and entertaining commentary in class. Take Maloy if possible!
if you don't like this man, there is something wrong with you. he is an amazing teacher and knows what he is talking about!
Great professor. The only problem with the class is that the material is as dry as his sense of humor. I heartily recommend him.
he's british, he's awesome.
He was a GREAT teacher.. fair tests, A's on both. Gives clear lecture notes online. Greatest and funniest teacher you'll ever have. He's really helpful too if you go to his office hours and he'll sit there and chat with you about life. Good guy!
Don't bother buying the text book, you won't read it. He makes notes that you can print out and then he recites them word for word in lecture. Some homework. The class is easy to follow but the tests are difficult.
A good professor. He basically reads off of his notes, which he posts online. But it's still important to go to class so you can get all of the graphs that he goes over in class.
very intelligent, knows what he's talking about. textbook was absoloutely USELESS, don't get it. the notes he posts online are very helpful, considering they are basically the lecture in paper form.. he's very good at responding to emails and meeting for office hours. british and cute, makes going to lecture a lot more interesting..
Maloy is the greatest professor I've ever had. You'll learn a lot, but you'll also get an A if you put in any effort. He is such a nice guy, and everyone loves his corny jokes and his English accent. Take one of his classes if at all possible.
Print the lecture notes and show up for class to get down the graphs. If you do this, you're almost guaranteed an A. Don't buy the book, just study by reading the notes once or twice the night before and it's cake
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!
I had James for both micro and macro, and his macro class was def a little bit more difficult. He provides all of the notes for you so you just have to fill in the curves. The book is not necessary. Overall, the macro concepts were a little bit more difficult and the exams a little bit harder.. but i still highly recommend taking him if you can!
Excellent professor! He types all of the lecture notes and posts them online for you; the book is very unnecessary to even buy! His tests are very fair and he has a really funny sense of humor and always keeps class interesting.... RIGHT! (you will understand once you take the class)
Good teacher. Explained the material well, and his tests were very fair. Study the practice tests he gives. Also the book is expensive and useless, so don't buy it.
Good teacher and funny guy, but sometimes he rambles on and repeats the same point multiple times. If you do the reading (less than 20 pages a week) and the problem sets this class is an incredibly easy A and you'll learn a lot. You have to write a 2000 word essay but you have all semester and he grades it leniently.
EXCELLENT Teacher! He is extremely helpful and has fair expectations.Go to class~He draws graphs that are essential for exams and that differ slightly from the book. There are 2 midterms,5 homeworks(lowest is dropped) and the final.Study the notes and pay attention in class and you should do great.I recommend him %100. He is also great for Econ 110.
Extremely good teacher. He gives weekly problem sets that show you exactly what to expect on the exams, along with ridiculously detailed solutions to them. He definitely tries his hardest to have you do well, and if you use the resources he gives you, you are pretty much guaranteed to.
terrible....hard to follow, grades terribly....want to kill myself!
James was by far my favorite teacher I have had in college. Lectures were easy to attend because of his sense of humor and British accent. Not to mention he was very easy on the eyes. Text book was unnecessary and a waste of money, notes cover all important topics in detail.
James is a pretty good teacher and definitely tries hard to provide you with the resources to do well in his course. My only complaint is that for every course he assigns a paper that seems thrown in for no reason and doesn't add anything to the course aside from making you do more work.
this teacher is some trash had him for 2 upper level courses and he was horrible. don't need or use the book. i just gives you paper with blank spaces to put graphs. his test are 5 questions and very subjuctive. some but not all. only good for intro classes
took him for money and banking, it was easy but i would never take him again. he's kind of a jerk. lecture is useless but he gives pop quizzes so u gotta go. he also assigns a 2000 word essay which is absolutely pointless but i think he just assigns it because he can.
He's funny and interesting and he knows what he's talking about. I highly recommend him.
hes incredibly smart and will help students with anything economics-related. also - far too good looking for a professor.
I had him for intermediate macro. He was amazing! Read his lecture notes, do the homework and you get an A no problem. Don't really need to read the book but I always did anyway. There was also a paper but it wasn't too hard and he was a fair grader. GREAT CLASS. He's also funny and awesome :)
Very opinionated, but interesting. He talks about what's happening in the real world a lot but teaches the material well too. He has great notes that you can print off online before every class.
great teacher, very fun and keeps the lectures interesting. he does state his opinions often. tests are very fair, study and do the work and you will be fine. good sense of humor
He is very opinionated about the economy today... but he is a good teacher. Don't really need the book, except for a couple of homeworks. Tests from his notes.
Pretty interesting. Gives lecture notes that are very easy to follow. Print them out and draw all the graphs in them. Study these notes and the tests won't be hard. An A is absolutely attainable. You will learn a lot.
Teaches straight from his lecture notes which he posts online. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. He is an amazing teacher. Very interesting, very cute, a bit awkward, but very nice. He explains things in a way that help even people that suck at economics understand the concepts. He is always making jokes!
he's a great professor. Fair exams, and a very intelligent guy. Everything you need to know is on the lecture notes. This class is easy for a reason however, which is so that you take upper level econ courses. That's when they get you.
He is a cool guy but expects a lot from his students. The tests are very difficult and you really need to know everything. To get an A you need to have no job, no other classes, and no life. But besides that, his class was alright
Funny guy, but has a tendency to ramble and repeat himself. Test material is basically covered in his extensive lecture notes (but you need to attend lecture to complete them). The book is only needed for the optional problem sets and one take-home assignment.
Yes, he'll get off topic and rant about current events, but it's so entertaining. And when he's not ranting, he's crystal clear in presenting the material. His lecture notes are fantastic, and he tests straight from them. Study those and getting an A won't be a problem. He made Intro Macro fun and interesting, and I learned a lot. Take Maloy!
Not a very good teacher. Get's off topic and told a student that their opinion was wrong in a class section. Might as well just give out his notes at the first day of class with exam dates to spare students. Definitely better teachers out there
Best teacher in the history of man. Very opinionated, but oh well hes an easy professor: final was a peice of cake as well. take maloy over anyone else.
He is definitely crystal clear while teaching "the material" and tends to drift off to current events. However, the current events "ranting" ties seamlessly into the material - and he is just as crystal clear when talking about FED policies and the current recession. Such a useful class. Definitely taking another one of his.
Professor Maloy is the best economics professor. He explains subjects very well and makes class interesting. He does go on rants, but usually they are funny. Also, he is very helpful if you have questions. I would recommend taking him for any economics class.
One of the best classes I have ever taken at Pitt. If Malloy is available, then choose him!
Best econ professor ever. I've taken a lot of economics courses and James Maloy is really interesting and funny. Study the notes he posts, it's everything he covers in class so you don't have to worry about taking a ton of notes.
Great teacher. He expects a lot - so study. He can be nerdy, but he's funny and enjoyable. He's also fine as hell.
I've taken Maloy multiple times, and is by far the best economics teacher I've ever had. He is very clear in his explanations, and his note outlines are all you need to pass. DO THE PROBLEM SETS. The questions are essential for passing exams. Grades questionably on papers though, but overall is fair. Best Econ teacher at Pitt, recommended!
VERY straightforward with what you have to know, if you know it youll be fine(and it's not hard), exams are almost the say every yr so get a hold of them, not too much work and not overly demanding, gives real life applications which is very useful, paper and quizzes grade booster, grades exams a little weird but definitely recommend taking him
I had him for a couple of Econ classes, definitely the best professor at Pitt, hands down. Listen to lecture and you're set for the exam. He (tries to be) funny too and will keep your attention (most of the time).
Makes this class seem alot harder than it actually is, in reality its very straight forward and not difficult to grasp at all if you put effort into it, no tricks test questions are very predictable if you study quizzes and essay are easy pts, he grades exams a little iffy but honestly most questions are doable enough where it wont matter TAKE HIM
Lectures very enthusiastically. Talks fast, but you get used to the pace by the second or third lecture. Tests are reasonable, quizzes come with fair warning. Recommended.
His lectures are very effective, although missing one or two will not hurt you. The problem sets are the key to doing well, as are the review sessions the UTA's hold. They have copies of the exam and do problems to help you on the board that look just like the questions on the exam.
He can hype it up all he wants(and he tries to scare you early on) honestly this is no harder than a gen ed. The key is just not pushing everything off and doing some(not even alot) of work before the night before the test. Repeats style of exam questions every year so get a hold of them via TAs. Quizzes and essay free pts. And thats 45% of grade
He can be easy if you study his practice problems and go to office hours. He does bring the hype but for good reason, if you underestimate his tests you will regret it.
Hardest econ class taken at pitt, I dont know why people are saying this is a breeze. He is a nice guy and great teacher, but the material is not "simple" he hypes it up becauase its true!
He's a nice guy, but this class was hard. You can do well but you absolutely have take the time to do the homework problems and know the material well. His lectures can be boring and he tends to ramble on about random stuff at times. Just don't underestimate how difficult his exams are.
This class was VERY difficult if you do not have a lot of economic background. It is entirely essay based exams, that are not only graphing but also explaining how it works, so you need to know everything. The quizzes are easy, and the essay isn't that difficult either. As hard as it was, go to office hours or TA hours and it well help a lot.
The concepts can be a bit dense but his tests are basic, as much as he tries to scare you, he really doesn't ask you to know more than the basics. If you keep up with the material, you'll be fine, he could make the class alot harder if he wanted to. Essays and quizzes are cake and that's half the grade. Speaks fast but a fun guy who can be helpful
Great teacher. He gives you all the notes you need to study, but you have to go to class to get the diagrams he draws (very important to understand concepts) because those are not given. Don't have to read the textbook. Definitely worth taking him, and easy to get an A as long as you read his notes and do the problem sets for practice
Jameson Maloy is the funniest professor you will have at pitt. He will make you laugh every class through his nerdy hateful wit. He hates Alan Greenspan and comcast with a firey passion. He is also extremely smart and lectures/handouts are clear and concise.
He's a very cool guy. He's also a good lecturer who knows what he's talking about. He's very passionate about economics, though he seems to be very distraught about current economic policy. The tests can be tricky, so make sure you study the topics as you receive them.
He's clearly very intelligent (though I'm not sure as much as he believes), but also very cynical. He teaches many things that I wish all citizens could understand, but it's not as easy as some people seem to indicate. Be prepared to study, but he is very clear with his expectations and material. If you attend calluses, the textbook is useless.
Attendance isn't taken but you'll need to go to class to get the notes and take the occasional (5) pop quizzes. On top of those, there are two tests and an essay. They're challenging, but if you go to class, and take decent notes, they're manageable. Not as easy as many people made it seem on here but not as hard as Maloy will try to make it seem.
People who whine about this class being hard simply aren't studying AT ALL. His tests are regurgitation of graphs and repeating things directly from notes. He loves to hype it up say you need to be able to think: you put even remote effort into the class it's easy. He's a fun nice guy, you'll learn a decent amount and he talks about current events
Easily my favorite professor at Pitt. Tests are long and involve a good amount of writing and explanation but he gives you every bit of information you could possibly use in lecture. His lectures are fun considering he is a genuinely good guy and easy to relate to. The paper is long but he grades it fairly and will help if you ask for it.
Overall an excellent professor, and one of the best I have had at Pitt. A great lecturer who keeps students engaged. Online notes are also very helpful. Keep up with the material (there is a lot of it), do the practice problems, and you will be prepared for the exam, which does involve a large amount of writing as it is all essay format.
Professor Maloy is without question one of the best Econ professors at Pitt. His macro class is not easy. But if you read the given lecture notes before each class and prepare for the tests you can definitely do well. He taught in the UK so tests are open ended. Overall great prof. I learned in his class which is more than I can say for some.
The tests are really straight from the practice problems in the notes, but you really have to nail the concepts in order to get a good grade. If you have any questions, he might make fun of you for getting the idea completely backwards, but he will definitely help you out. Great class!
The tests are long, but they aren't too hard. The quiz's and essay are grade boosters. As long as you attend his class more often then not, and do the problem sets, there is no reason not pass this class.
Passing the class is doable. Trying to just memorize everything will only get you so far, though. You have to really try to understand it to do well. Notes he posts help. Sometimes goes on tangents and class can feel long, but overall I feel like I learned more than other econ classes I've taken
Maloy is one of the best professors I've had at PITT. He makes you put in effort to do well in the class, but you can just cram it a few days before the test. The Quiz's are easy and take home and the essay is graded fair. Best thing he did was email the class after the midterm and told everyone who failed it to drop the class and pick a new major.
Maloy is very arrogant. However, if you participate he is nice and will treat you well.
Prof Maloy is by far the best lecturer I've had so far at Pitt. I was never bored in his lectures with his digressions and jokes. His exams are straightforward, but you need to study and attend lectures to do well. There is a 2500 word paper, but it grades it fairly.
Dr. Maloy is by far the best professor I have ever had. He is absolutely hilarious, and there are not many dull moments in his lectures. He knows how to explain seemingly difficult concepts in a way that nearly anyone can understand, and is always available for extra help if you need it. Take any class you can with him, you won't regret it! :)
Maloy is actually a very good professor. He comes off as snarky and annoying at first but you'll learn to appreciate his sarcasm and humor. He is pretty clear in lecture. Not terribly boring. If you puts the work in, attend class, read the book you'll be fine. The concepts aren't that hard. Decently easy exam grader.
Maloy is an incredibly intelligent professor. His class involves a good amount of studying in order to do well, but you learn so much. Lectures can get boring after a while but he's very sarcastic and funny which helps to keep it entertaining. He's definitely worth the difficulty, would highly recommend his class.
This man is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. If you are passionate about econ, he will help to cultivate this passion. He is also hilarious and just a great guy. Teaches the material well, and class is not bad if you put effort in. Definitely one of my favorite professors, if you have the chance to take him, do it
Maloy is a fantastic professor. Some people dislike him because he is very sarcastic, but it makes lectures so much better. He does go on tangents but builds in enough time so you still cover everything. Also, the notes he posts are very comprehensive, if you print them, you really do not need to buy the book.
As most people have said, Maloy is very intelligent and humorous. His lectures are a bit scattered but he pretty much teaches everything from the book, so refer to that and the lecture notes if you're lost. Tests are straightforward. Got a 74 on the midterm and a 75 on the final and ended up w a B. Put any effort into the paper and you'll do great
Great prof. His humor and style seem to be either a hit or miss for students, but regardless, he definitely knows his stuff and isn't there to make your life difficult. Very fair exams (open ended), accessible in office hours, and instead of a 2nd midterm, there's a paper. Course content is super interesting. Highly recommended.
Going to be honest here, I dont think I am going to end up with the best grade in this class, but its due to my lack of hard work. Professor Maloy is an exceptional guy who is both hilarious and smart. I handed in a paper 2 hours late today and all he said (jokingly) was that I owe him push-ups. Hes a good dude who wants you to do well. Take him
The man. He is the most hilarious professor I've ever had. I came to every single one of his 75-minute, 9:30 AM lectures, and I don't even like economics that much. He's that good. There is a 2500 word paper, but no other assignments are required, so the course isn't too much work.
He is the best econ professor at Pitt. Very knowledgeable and great at explaining. Exams are open ended, there is a paper, and a couple take home quizzes (doesn't mean they are easy though). If you come to class and do his problem sets, you should have no trouble in the class.
Really nice guy. He explains things really well. He gives notes on what he is going over so you can follow along or look it over if you missed something. Tests are very fair. No trick questions or anything like that
Dr. Maloy has the classic dry sense of humor of an economist, and it makes his lectures enjoyable. With that being said, the content of this course is very straight forward and intuitive. If you put in any effort to understand the content, you'll due fine.
He is very straightforward in his lectures, he provides a lot of good examples and also has lecture notes that you can print out for each lecture. Basically everything he teaches in class is in the notes so if you miss a lecture you should be fine minus the diagrams he draws. There are 4 short homework assignments, 2 midterms and an exam.
James Maloy is definitely one of my favorite professors I took this semester. He has a very good sense of humor, and posts lecture notes that he uses for his tests. We only had 4 graded assignments, two tests, and a non-cumulative final. There are two textbooks for the class, but he provides them online. Highly recommended!!
Super cool dude. Really enjoyed hearing what he had to say and his insight into modern and historical monetary policy. The class is extremely paper and exam heavy (3 papers and a written final exam), so get ready to churn out some works of art. Definitely learned a lot via the independent nature of the course, and he is super helpful in explanation
He's an awesome guy, but this class wasn't easiest. I've taken two upper-levels with him and they've both been extremely writing extensive -- 100+ pages between the two. Must-avoid *if* you dislike writing. The other classes are skewing the difficulty rating so be warned.
Cool, funny guy, though he does tend to ramble a lot during lecture. Posts VERY complete lecture notes online, and out-of-class assignments and tests are a piece of cake. Macroecon is not a particularly interesting subject, but if you can draw two lines on a graph and memorize why they shift, you'll do great in this class. Solid gen ed choice.
James Maloy is the boy. Intro to Macro is very easy gen ed and he is a great teacher. He is extremely funny in some of his lectures as he insults modern economists. Very good guy. So easy to get an A in the class.
James's macro class is very dry but so easy. 2 exams and a final that's not cumulative. Exams are directly related to the lecture notes he provides, so you only have to go to class to get the graphs. Recitation, however, IS mandatory. I hate economics, but this class was so easy I did not mind it at all. I highly recommend.
I took macro for the A&S gen ed requirement and it was a piece of cake. Econ is a boring subject unless you're into it but Jimbo at least tries to keep it a little bit interesting. Tests weren't cumulative and his online notes were super good to study. Recitations sucked but if you show up you'll get the credit. The 3 homeworks were easy too.
James Maloy is great if you're prepared for a nerd. I took the honors section, so the class was small, and we were able to go on tangents to discuss real-world applications of topics we were discussing. He is a tough professor but if you apply yourself and do your homework you should be fine. Personally, he is one of my favorite professors.
I took macro with James and it was amazing. The guy knows how to teach. He works with clear examples throughout his lectures which makes everything very comprehensive. His notes were also helpful. Attendance is not mandatory but you won't understand anything if you skip it. Would def take a class with the guy again.
James is honestly not a bad prof, but he is extremely dry and lectures are hard to listen to. Recitations are mandatory but are the most helpful part. He also posts notes online
Surprisingly quantitative for an intro-level course. I'm a non major who has a good understanding of conceptual econ and this course was still hard. Dry lectures, a lot of problem sets for recitation, lots of reading outside of class. Posts notes beforehand but a lot is covered in class that's not in the notes. Not an easy course.
I had professor Maloy for Intro to Microeconomics. The class wasn't bad and lectures are optional. Just print the lecture notes out and study them for the test. Recitation is useful to go over graphs and they are required. Theres 4 assignments (lowest dropped) and 3 tests (no cumulative final). Probably the best teacher for Micro.
Econ 0110 is an easy intro class for econ. Maloy gives really good notes that if you read, do the few homework, and look at the weekly activities, and you'll pass easy. I went to 3 classes and got 90's on every test.
Professor Maloy is great. He gives such detailed notes that are easy to understand and very organized. They are great study tools and he pulls questions for the exam off his notes. Recitation is mandatory but super helpful. 2 midterms, final, and 4 assignments. Overall, great class.
To be honest I'm not really sure why Dr. Maloy has such good reviews. I decided to take him for Intro to Macroeconomics because he had above a 4.0 on this website, but he wasn't that great. His lectures were dry and I had to study a lot for the exams. I honestly learned more from my TA than him.
Absolutely hilarious and makes the subject interesting. He entertains questions, but participation isn't necessary. His tests require application as opposed to memorization and he'll challenge you to become a better economics student. one of the best college professors I've had so far. He inspired me to be an Economics major even though I'm Pre-Med
I took Macro as an AP in high school and it didn't prepare me for this course as much as an intro class would have. Maloy assumes that everyone has taken intro at Pitt so I found it more difficult at times and had to put in extra work. That being said, he is always available to help those who need it and are willing to work hard.
Lectures are very scattered. Very difficult to take notes and learn from. There is no visual aid or ppt to follow along with. Recitations are mandatory. Tests are straight forward; read the lecture notes. They contain all the essential info for the class, and they are primarily where the material from the tests come from. 4 homeworks, drop lowest.
James is very knowledgeable and gives excellent lectures on everything economics. His dark humour is hysterical. You learn a lot from the lectures. However, compared to the other macro teacher James' tests are essay-centred rather than calculations. If you need good grades do not take him but if you just want to learn he is the best.
James is an ok choice for intro to macro. His lectures are dry and they are based entirely off his lecture notes that he posts online so you don't really need to go. I learned more from my TA in recitation than I did in lecture. Make sure you read the lecture notes thoroughly, but you don't really need to read the textbook.
Maloy is a great option for Intro to Macro, he goes on a lot of tangents and tells a lot of jokes during class but it keeps the class interesting. Maloy is very helpful in office hours, so if you are struggling just go ask for help. He definitely cares about his students' success in the course
Probably one of the best lecturers I've had at Pitt; I had to take him twice for macro classes because I enjoyed his lecture format so much. Informal guy, and his friendly attitude helps to drive home points about certain things. Prosem was interesting and entertaining, 6 assignments and a final paper and presentation to finish off my econ career
Prof Maloy is one of the best professors out there. He's a funny and relatable guy, always prepared for lecture and provides awesome note packets that are completely comprehensive of the content on his exams. The few homework assignments really help you study for the exams, which aren't too bad. Overall great class and he makes it even better.
Dr Maloy is extremely knowledgeable, a great lecturer! He is a slightly eccentric person so be aware of that. You learn so much from his lectures. However, I suffered the most headache in college from the exams and research paper from this class since intermediate macro is the kind of class that make people switch majors.
I took Honors Macro with Dr. Maloy, the class was kind of boring for me because I previously took macro in high school, but his occasional jokes made it interesting. The exams were all open ended, but easy and you're given four easy homeworks to prepare for exams.
The class is all lectures. He provides comprehensive lecture notes, but you need to go to class to see the diagrams and derivations (which are on the exams). The grade consisted of 30% Midterm Exam, 30% Final Exam, 25% Research Paper (2500 words), and 15% four homework assignments (takes the best 3). It's hard, but totally doable to get good grades
He's interesting, to say the least. Extremely clear grading criteria. His tests were simple: you either know the content, or you don't. Was arguably the best professor I had in transitioning to online coursework, for what it's worth. I would suggest getting a Chegg subscription for his homework assignments to boost your homework grade.
This was the only econ class that I feel like I came away from with a solid understanding of how policy is used in the real world. Maloy is interesting and clearly knows his stuff. There was a lot of writing - we had 3 take home essay exams. These didn't have a required length, but if you do them properly you'll probably write 30+ pages in total.
He's okay. He is quite blunt with words to the point where it's a little rude(especially when grading exams and HW's) but he knows his stuff. His lectures are incredibly boring though, maybe because our sense of humor is not alike. I took him for intro macro too but I don't recommend him for intermediate macro. He cares about students understanding
Super knowledgeable guy with a witty sense of humor. Loved going every week. Lots of printouts of his notes if you want to do the reading prior to each class. Occasional homework assignments. Expect to write on his exams, he really wants students to use their thinking skills when it comes to observing and implementing economic theory.
I took the honors intro macro section (hybrid model). Dr. Maloy is a great professor and person. He tries hard to keep everyone entertained and interested in the information. He is very open to helping students and is willing to chat and get to know them. Overall, class is easy if you try. Homework and exams are very similar to lecture notes!
Great professor. I was intimidated to take Intro to Macro but I'm really glad I did. He adjusted the format well to it all being online and his lectures were enjoyable to attend. He's really funny and cares a lot about the students. As long as you work hard, ask questions, and pay attention, you'll be fine.
I like him because hes informal and treats you like an adult which is nice. Our seminar class was essay/discussion based and sadly it was online but I still enjoyed it. I found him p funny but your mileage will vary and if you are easily offended you might not like it. This was a capstone so its p much show what you know and its an A for effort.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Speaks negatively about the university, students, and economics. He spends chunks of lecture boasting about his own intelligence when he was our age. Expectations are unreasonably high when lectures are incomprehensible and scattered. Not sure why he has such positive reviews.
I have no idea how this guy has such positive reviews. His lectures are extremely scattered and yet for some reason he still has extremely high expectations for the assignments (of which there are only 4 total - 3 written exams and a paper). Don't be fooled, the exams take HOURS/DAYS to complete even though they are take home. So much reading too.
If you want to learn about economics, this is the best professor. You are graded from long written exams and an essay at the end of the semester. Lectures are not mandatory, but needed to do well on the exams. He is accessible outside of class. Overall, he is a nice professor who knows a lot about economics and wants his students to learn.
My favorite professor at Pitt! The guy is hilarious and he truly wants his students to succeed. I had him for both Intro and Intermediate Macro last year. He was one of few professors who had class in person during COVID which was nice. His assignments are long but fair. As long as you attend class regularly and show effort, youll pass.
Passive Aggressive on emails which are kind of a turn-off. Nice in-office hours. Funny lectures and does his job well.
He goes on a lot of tangents and often complains about other economists, but explains material fairly well. There were 3 open-ended exams and 4 assignments, one of which was dropped. I liked how we got to choose which questions to answer on exams. However, his grading was unpredictable and I never knew if my explanation was what he was looking for.
The grade is composed of 3 exams and hw. He does post lecture notes, but if you want to learn how to draw the diagrams you need to be in class. He seems like a stickler for how the diagrams are drawn so you needed to have all the details. For the open-ended questions, I basically wrote everything I knew on the topic and hoped for the best
Dr. Maloy's approach is a bit unique but not bad at all. Lectures are usually 60% content, 40% stories that start somewhat related but often veer away. He is the reason I now prefer my exams be open-ended, as, despite his harsher approach to grading assignments, he grades pretty easily on exams which matter way more. Pretty fun dude!
I didn't learn anything in this class. His lectures were scattered and he goes off topic. Half the time I had no idea what was going on, he is smart but not a great teacher. He is also mean especially with replying to emails and commenting on wrong exam answers instead of helping a student understand what they did wrong.
Maloy is a genius. Had him for intermediate macro, thought I'd hate the class. Ended up being my favorite so far. This guy knows what he's talking about inside and out, is great at explaining anything. An absolute hidden treasure of Allegheny County. Take him and become enlightened.
He is super smart and entertaining. 2 page paper due every week and lectures are just class discussions. easy good grade
VERY Knowledgable about EVERYTHING. Will be taking all of his other courses in the future. Very entertaining and has some fun stories.
Loved this class and James. Graded on 3 exams (not cumulative) and a paper, each 25% of your grade. Problem sets aren't required but pretty much are the exams, and I thought he went easy on the paper. He goes on a lot of tangents in lectures, but they're funny and make the class enjoyable. Basically, if you need an easy econ elective, take him.
He is a great guy and a great professor. Definitely knows his stuff. The stories he tells during lectures are very entertaining.
The only thing he expects from a student is that they show up to class. By far the best professor at Pitt, who really cares about his students, and makes sure everyone in his class is engaged, progressing, and doing well. He has a plethora of knowledge which he is very passionate about. Only way to bad in his class is by not going to class.
Entertaining and eccentric, very knowledgeable. Write an essay about a niche economic topic of your choosing once a week, sit back, and listen to him rant about his thoughts on everything from monetary theory to his Argentinian girlfriend for an hour. You'll get an A provided you don't praise Ben Bernanke. This guy hates Ben Bernanke.
Doable class if you work hard but he doesn't make it easier for you. He's a fast talker and doesn't write stuff on the board during lecture but says it; doesn't put graphs on the lecture notes posted on Canvas so you're forced to come to class. He is not funny and goes off on random tangents during lecture. Take this if you are self-motivated.
best econ prof in the whole department, rescheduled my courses to take other classes taught by him.
Take him if you want to learn real economics. He knows everything about everything.
Maloy is a great professor with clear expectations, hilarious lectures, and is a fair grader. He really knows his stuff when it comes to ECON. However, if you are not 100% certain that you want to major in economics I would not recommend him, especially for a course like Intermediate Macro. Otherwise, is 100% a must take at least once in the dept!
Dr.Maloy is not a bad professor. He honestly knows his stuff but is just not that good at lecturing. He never collects homework until the midterm exam, which covers many things. The workload is so heavy. This is not his fault though but simply because I'm not a self-motivated student. If you are, take him. If you not, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
If you pay attention, show up, and put in effort you will do very well. He doesn't officially take attendance, but he calls you out if you miss class often. If he sees that you are trying and putting in effort, you will do just fine. The lectures are all over the place and he complains a lot, but if you get the general idea you are good.
Professor Maloy is brilliant but can be a tough instructor. Stay on top of the heavy workload, attend class, and utilize resources like Unstuck ai for study prep. It's challenging but rewarding if you put in the effort.
Dr. Maloy is the most interesting professor ever. He loves Econ and really want to teach something to students who also love Econ. However, he is hard with grading, it shows his strict ambitious to Econ though. In his class, you have to take fully attention and hard working. If you are not that kind of students, I do not recommend his class.
Very competent and intelligent, the type of person you want as a college professor. Lecture notes posted online cover everything in lecture with the exception of diagrams which make the lectures useful to attend.
I don't understand how he has such a high rating. On the first day of classes he said if we don't understand certain concepts that we are "dumb..." amongst other things. He grades based on his mood. We got a take home quiz back, a bunch of students wrote variations of the correct answers with similar graphs and got drastically different grades.
Maloy is great: interesting lectures and relevant, funny real-life examples. He makes macro fun and knows his stuff. Despite this, he is a HARSH grader, and you have to prove you fully understand every concept; you can't make things up, or he will call you out on it. You'll be fine if you pay attention in class and put in lots of time to study.
Old-school professor with entertaining lectures. Passionate and knowledgable which makes the material digestible. Fair grader. Only critique is tells you not to memorize the material (common rhetoric in econ department), however the structure of exams benefits those who memorize the material. Don't take if you want to work for a central bank.
