Worst class I ever sat through... was no point in attending accept to get your name on the attendance list... grading is not consistent... AVOID AT ALL COSTS
This class SUCKED. His lectures were absolutely pointless, his tests were difficult and the grading was unfair. Beware, he seems cool at first, but the hair flipping and flambouyant gestures get very annoying very quickly.
I really liked this class, but I'm not sure if the professor had anything to do with it. Very interesting though. Tests were long, but fairly easy. Best grade I got in a Science Class EVER! Class is about impact of disease on society and not so much about the biology of the disease = interesting
No Comments
He seemed cool at first, but beware, his lectures did not at all correspond with the material on his exams. I recommend either studying 24/7, or finding a new professor.
If you take good notes its not that bad. The "pink book" helps a lot, as do the last years exams that he sends you. Tests can be tricky though
Biased; likes to play favorites to athletes. Not helpful at all.
the class was interesting, but the prof. didn't appear to understand most of what he was teaching....his tests were graded so harshly that it was just ridiculous.....never responded to e-mail for help...not a good professor at all
Prof Marker was extremely helpful in helping my understand the concepts of human biology, and allthought sometimes he might act a little corny he keeps the class alive!
Great teacher. I am not a science person, and I just love this class. Most definately my favorite class. If you are not a science genius...he makes you feel like you are cause he makes everything easier to understand!
Worst professor I ever had. Mostly very VERY rude when you need to talk to him in person! Doesn't give you the time of day. Went to every class and it didn't help @ all, he told terrible jokes, and half the time I couldn't understand them b/c on the "funny" part he would say it so fast you couldn't understand!Take a diff.prof.for this INTRO class!
You must attend class to understand what is going on in the course. He is extremely funny and he tries to make science interesting. His tests are really long for the amount of time you recieve.
He was my favorite professor! I hated biology and dreaded this class, and it ended up being my favorite class! He makes things very easy to understand and he's is funny in his own goofy litte way! He knows when its time for a break and to tell some jokes, and he sends you last years tests...WHICH ARE ALMOST IDEINTICAL TO THE ONES WE TAKE!!Take him!
Horrible professor. Tests are very difficult. One of the most difficult courses I've ever taken. Tests are all multiple choice with five possible answers for each question. Your entire grade is based off of these tests, no attendance or participation score, no papers, no extra credit, no quizzes, no short-answer or essay questions.
tests r kinda difficult. go to class n take notes n read alot to get an A. says some jokes that u either can't hear, don't make sense, or just aren't funny.
Hated this prof. with a passion. Tests are extermly hard and final is cummalitive. Thinks he is funny. Avoid taking if can and take Prof. Hanke.
I loved this prof!! His class is difficult and I hate Biology but he made it fun and interesting. You NEED your book. Lots of test questions on his website. Taking more classes with him for sure.
was a diffcult class, grade were based on 4 exam which were hard. take another professor if you can!
Tough class with difficult tests. Keeping up with reading and attending class is important. Cumulative final better than expected. Overall, thought he was a good instructor.
This was a difficult course, but okay if you studied a lot. I ddnt like his jokes, but the class seemed to. Definitely use the notes and go to class will help you pass
So long as you go to class, you should know enough for a B. If you go to class and do the review questions, an easy A. He gives you everything you need, even which questions are important for his tests. An easy class if you just try a little. And he makes it fun, adding random things some days.
The hardness of this class IMO has alot to do with your ability to remember alot of detail! I had to read the book to get the details - many people don't. Tests were hard! But, the professor truly works hard to help you understand. Very interactive class...don't sit in the back as the accoustics in this room are horrible.
Really Tough Professor, His exams are accumulative and the final exam was 150 questions this past year. He doesn't take attendance, but if you miss class then you miss all of his notes, then exams are even harder
Hard to listen to and really annoying after awhile. Attempts to create interest but lacks humor. Boring teacher but interesting class.
I did not want to take this class, not liking science and all, but Prof. Marker was GREAT. He gives you a "note" syllabus to follow which is extremely helpful and is willing to answer EVERY question you could possibly ask. He wants his students to succeed. If you don't like science and have to knock out this gen ed, I would recommend taking him.
Funny and quirky professor. He explained the material very well at a level for everyone to understand. He gives a great booklet of notes which complement the lecture. I highly recommend reading the chapters in the text book throughly to get a better understanding of the content. Final exam is intimidating but not hard if you read & study his notes.
Overall, he was entertaining. Made this class more interesting than any science teacher i've had before. He reviews every so often which is helpful. As long as you study the lecture guide he gives you and the book you should be pretty good.
Okay teacher, I find it difficult to comprehend his "fun" terms he uses to "help" us understand what he is talking about. Don't care for his jokes much, but the class did. I do like how he would base his teaching off the feedback of the students. Ask questions, come to class, he gives a practice test for every test he gives! =]
I thought he was a terrible professor. The exams are very long and multiple choice only. Final was 180 questions cumulative. Never offers extra credit, often goes off-topic in lectures. If you can avoid this professor, I would do that if I were you. This class was extremely stressful.
Can't write a good test. They are very long and difficult. Seems to care a lot about teaching in class
Soooo picky. He contradicts everything he says with grading. He laughs at students answers when they try really hard which needs to stop! When you don't understand something he doesn't seem to care and doesn't want to put time in to help. Don't take him if you really don't need to.
Absolutely terrible teacher. There is no structure to the class and he frequently goes off topic for long periods of time. Tells you to not remember things, yet still includes them on quizzes and exams. Grades like a lunatic and will take points off for different reasons depending on the day.But according to him "Grades don't matter", so good luck!
Very bad lectures. Horrible and inconsistent grading. Not a good instructor at all for upper level courses.
Horrible professor for upper level classes. Inconsistent grading. Exams are super long. Lecture is scattered and hard to follow.
Lecture was hard to follow. Tests were super long and difficult. When you asked questions, he didn't really answer them. I wouldn't take another course with this professor
Lots of inconsistencies regarding what will be on quizzes and exams. Lectures are hard to follow.
Try's to trick you on exams. questions are poorly worded setting you up for failure, disorganized, contradicting, very biased grader, chose a different classprofessor if possible
Worst learning experience I've ever had. No supplementary material for lectures, you just listen to him ramble and when it's test time and you write down what you thought he said, he contradicts himself and it's his word against yours. Personally, he was very rude to me and extremely condescending overall in the class. I like the material, not him.
Okay this professor clearly needs some help. Try to focus on the lectures, but he rambles on and on. Can't just give a clear answer. The quizzes are from the book and tests are from lectures, which makes no sense to me. They should be a little bit of both. Anyway, never taking this professor again. Ridiculous how many lectures for one topic.
His lectures dont really go based on the tests
Awful at lecturing, does not explain things clearly and goes on tangents. Requires you to have his lecture booklet which is basically fill in the blank notes he created. Exams are difficult because they're based off of his vague notes. You only use the book for weekly quizzes. Nice guy, but I absolutely cannot learn from him.
Every question is a trick question on the exams and quizzes.
A lot of notes, but if you are a conscientious reader it wont be an issue.
every time you take an exam you'll feel you studied the wrong stuff. when he lectures you'll get lost because he goes off topic. i always felt prepared before i took the exam but leaving i always felt defeated.
The weighted grades were confusing. This was an online course, and the video lectures used were recycled from many years prior. The videos had poor audio quality and many logistical errors. Read quiz/exam questions carefully and beware of trick questions. Double check grades and challenge if marked wrong in error.
Doesn't teach what is on the exams, very rude, picks favorites with student athletes and contradicts himself. Worst class I have taken in my life and did not talk to a single classmate who thought good of him. Honestly lecture, tests and he himself are just a wreck.
Dr. Marker was a good professor in that aspect that he is knowledgeable. However, he is poor at translating that to his students. I wanted to throw myself down a flight of stairs to avoid his class every morning. With that being said, he is kind and does seem to care about his students. But, you must attend class to have a chance at getting an A.
I am currently taking this during the pandemic, but the fact that he is never available doesn't make sense. What you go through in class isn't on the exam, and he expects you to buy a 30 dollar notes book when he could easily put it online for free. He says the book isn't necessary but in my opinion if you don't read it, you won't pass
Retook this class because I didn't do well the first time. Should have read the reviews about James Marker before thinking he would help me improve. He is not responsive or empathetic in the slightest. I've asked for help so many times with either no reply or condescending remarks, as if I'm the one with the PHD. 10/10 wouldn't recommend.
You would think he would be more sympathetic towards his students during a global pandemic - which is ironic because hes a bio professor. He made no accommodations or offered extra credit and he thinks a 74% average on his tests are good. Seriously? Avoid this guy.
I am taking this during the pandemic. He claims he has been available since then, but makes not efforts to email back. He also claimed that the Lecture book was not necessary, but makes us pay for a lecture book he made for the class. He made us watch 12+ year old lecture videos, how lazy can you get and not update. Id rather teach myself with YT.
Imagine teaching yourself all the content that his videos did not explain. His video lectures are so old, and are like hours long talking about one single thing, and most of the time he goes off track. He's the worst professor I've ever had, but he has the audacity to say he's always been available and helping students (clown face emoji)
It was wack honestly. I clearly needed help, and he never helped me. If I could I would go to the teachers office hours, but obviously I can't. So all i can do is email, and he NEVER ANSWERS. Why become a professor if you can't be there when a student needs help.
If you read other reviews, you will notice the final grades aren't the best. I got an AB which is pretty good and yet I have nothing good to say about this prof. I worked very hard to earn what I got, harder than what I should need to. He is not easy to contact. His lectures are from 2012. His test is very long and gives no time. Worst prof at gb.
Dr. Marker seems like a very nice individual but as a professor he is just not good. His lectures are a drag to go to and regarding his exams, they are worded poorly and he tries to trick you on every question.
I took this class online my first semester. Professor is an extremely hard grader and there are multiple long lectures , tons of reading, and quizzes every week. I am good at biology and struggled in this class. Exams are very hard and coursework is not like what is on the exams. Definitely have to do other reading and watch other videos to do good
Terrible professor. 5 tests and they don't match the lectures. Questions don't make sense. Weekly quizzes have nothing to do with the tests.
Just awful. Indecisive and not clear in instruction, lab packets, or grading. Very tough grader, but when questioned doesn't know what he took points off for. Graphing for labs was awful; he wasn't clear in what he wanted. I was way too stressed for a 1-credit course. Far too much expected of students with nothing in return. Won't respond to emails
Prof insists that needed info is in notes, but the notebook is fill as you go & he skips pages failing to give info. He says over & over that you only need to know the basics - this is false. You need to learn every step of every step in detail. Test are multiple choice w/multiple correct answers, & timed. watch videos - he drops nontextbook info
This class was all quizzes and exams, there would be things in the lecture notes but would be wrong on the exams so the questions dont even match up. Not to mention the lecture videos are really old. The exams and quizzes are all timed so if you have a lot of test anxiety I wouldnt recommend because thats all this class is
Very outdated pre-recorded lectures. Uses dock cams which is always blurry and unable to read. Requires you to purchase a book that he wrote in order to follow along and fill in the blank of his lectures. Lectures dont actually match the book he requires you to purchase since videos are so old. His tests are more confusing then anything.
Dr. Marker is all over the place. Material handed out in class/labs has vital information left out or contains major grammatical errors making it difficult deciphering what he wants. He is a good man though. Taking classes with him was an awful experience for many others and myself. Unfortunately, if you are human bio. You can't avoid him. Godspeed
I am an education major; I do not even understand why I took this class. Thanks to my horrible advisor, if your advisor tells you this class is good, I would tell them to shut up. I recommend taking Human Diseases course online, way better and fulfills the same credit. This class and professor suck so bad, would never recommend for anyone.
It almost felt like he purposely set us up for failure in this class. Nothing in lecture is consistent with what is on exams. If you don't quote him word for word on the essay questions you will get them wrong. Get on his good side if you want a good grade, he notices who shows up and participates.
I only took this class because it was required
Due to my major, I had to take two of his classes as he is the only professor that teaches them. Horrible grader, horrible communicator, and his expectations are not well explained. He would have wrong answers on exams and not change our grades. Very poor professor. I know people who have dropped their majors because of him. awful.
I definitely don't recommend his classes, not because of him but just because they are very difficult classes
His very stale voice makes it hard to pay attention while he dabbles around in his million lectures per topic. His exam question does not make sense. If they do, the answers aren't in the lecture books that he recommends you buy. You rarely need to read the textbook, money down the drain. Do not take.
He is a subpar professor at best, with an insane requirement to download 3rd party Spyware onto your device to take the exams (no alternatives offered, even after extensive conversation, research, and negotiation). Do not take his classes, save yourself the time, money, and headache.
Avoid taking this rigged course. Your grade is based on exams that are created using his questions from lectures that date as far back as 2012 and 2013, the information taught is outdated and questions are often based on his opinions or comments from these low quality lectures. Honorlock for exams is required. Disappointing, go find a better course
Inaccessible class disability wise. Write very small in the online lecture notes, making it nearly impossible to pay attention at the same time. Simple biology class, will be fine if all your time is spent on it. Crash course and YouTube are BFF
My experience with professor Marker was terrible. I was struggling in his class considering the class is exam heavy and the exams having nothing to do with what you learned. I also reached out to him multiple time to retake an exam I had missed and he never answered so I received a F on it. Please take with class with a different professor.
There are some pretty old lectures back from like 2012 that are really long so it's hard trying to pay attention. The exams are really long but there is somewhat of a curve. The final is worth like 20% of your grade. You'll spend a lot of time studying, it's a stressful class. Good luck!
Awful awful awful, there are only two professors that give this class unfortunately, this professor is the worst of the two. He is known by other professors as a horrible grader and known by students as possibly the most infamously difficult professor at the university. It wouldn't surprise me if he's only still here because he has tenure.
Bum, certified bum, easily distracted, taught with ancient projectors, hard to learn.
yup.
He is very lecture-heavy and uses lectures 10-15 years old. He repeats himself a lot and gets distracted very easily. His "Quizignments" have nothing to do with the material he presents in lectures. The textbook he gives you won't help you at all. You will be teaching yourself about material that doesn't matter and isn't relevant. Good luck.
The fact he was peddling his study guide that he wrote and published via Pearson as something the students needed to buy or they'd have a lot harder time succeeding. That's unethical to peddle something you wrote as essential to the course on top of the textbook, students already pay for the class and the textbook. Study guides are normally free.
He is dumbfounded when I ask about the concept of simply sharing the lecture notes over word(that he made). He presents his class off of a word document which could be simply shared with the class but instead he sells for a profit. He still shares lectures that were done in the late 2000s using windows 7. Unforgiving, boring, OUTDATED.
His "lectures" were filmed probably 15 years ago. He makes you buy a book for notes you can easily take without the book. He does not explain things well, but the grading is clear. The quizzes do not relate to what he talked about. You have to teach yourself.
this dude was horrible, don't ever take him. he doesn't teach the information needed for the exams and the quizzes he gives has nothing to do with the exams either. I, an A student, had to get a tutor for the course.
This class was very difficult. He was a tough grader and the tests didn't really cover what we learned in class. Be prepared to teach yourself a lot of the material. Good luck!
Horrible professor. Uses old lectures from 2014 and nothing from his "Quizignments" matches with his exams whatsoever. The first exam from everybody in the class avg to 73%. Horrible professor do not take this class. RUN
The course material is interesting and Dr. Marker creates an engaging classroom environment through class discussion and his sense of humor. It is special that he can bring out students' unique personalities the way he does. Dr. Marker wants his students to be their best and will help them get there by providing feedback, etc. Trust the process.
Tests do not cover what is learned through lecture or book. I felt as though I could study for hours and I could never get above a B. There are quizzes weekly that have no correlation to the exam and will NOT help you.
For the final exam make sure you have good WiFi and studying the previous exams like he says will not help you. Study the textbook he gave you heavily.
I learned a lot from the course, but it was very stressful to complete. You will have to watch his older lecture videos, but he moves very quickly. The tests are difficult and there are many exams worth a lot of points. You must work very hard to get a good grade, I spent so much time on work for this class. I even had to get a tutor.
The weekly assignments were not related to the exams at all. A lot of the lectures were really old. He told us to study our previous exams for the final exam, but that was a lie. I would say that half of the final was on questions that were on previous exams. We had to be recorded for the exams, even though they were open notes.
I have emailed him several times, and he will not respond. Also, I had AI do one of his tests and I still failed. If ChatGPT doesn't know, how am I supposed to?
Quizzes have nothing to do with exams. Exams are proctored but allow open notes. Always does trick questions. You study one thing and get only 2 out of 4 points for one question because he updates the tests/quizzes but not his lectures. I spent $40? On his lecture syllabus thing that he said would absolutely help (it did not). He is not helpful.
Not very helpful when emailing outside of class. Quizignments don't prepare you for the exams, which are tricky and full of trick questions. Lectures are very long and recorded from 2012-2022. The lecture syllabus/notes help a bit for exams, but to do well, you really have to carefully remember and note everything said in the lectures.
The quizzes and exams were super tricky, asking what things were NOT instead of what they were. He did not respond to emails sent. You had to buy his lecture syllabus that wasn't very helpful. His online lecture videos had terrible audio and video. Do not recommend AT ALL.
