Jim is AWESOME. He's funny, friendly and approachable. He's always willing to help you. He blends comedy into class, so it's always interesting. He's a great teacher and I've learned so much from him. I wish he taught English 201!

I didn't know people were so easily offended by some swearing. Anyways, I thought Jim was a great teacher. I liked his simple, straightforward teaching style. Easy class and an easy A for me.

Mr. Matthis is an excellent teacher for those who are willing to work hard and are equally interested in learning. He demands quality work from his students and he's readily available for after class assistance.

i thought jim was one of the coolest teachers. for those who say that he dosen't know what he is teaching they must not have been paying very much attention. jim is straight forward and tells you exactly what he expects, and demands nothing less.

Great teacher. He makes you think and welcomes student's opinions. There is a lot of reading to do in this class, so I advise anyone not to take this class if they loath reading. Very funny teacher as well, I got a kick out of his sarcastic humor.

I've taken Speech 101 w/ Matthis a couple of years ago. He is very sarcastic and funny, and tells you what's on his mind. He is a tough critic when it comes to topics, and when u reveal ur work.

Jim is a great teacher for those who know how to learn from any teacher there is. He is very sarcastic, but if you can't handle it then don't take his class. If you can handle a little sarcasm then I highly recommend him. I'm taking him again actually next semester. I love the guy.

I strongly disargee with the person who said Jim is disrespectful to women especially. When I took creative writing with him about 60% of the class were women. Yes, he does use foul language but that is who is. I love it when he goes into his little rants about life. Great teacher.

He is my favorite teacher of all time. He is very blunt, down-to-earth, and sarcastic. He makes the requirements on the papers very clear and precise. But, some people may be offended by his vulgar sense of humor.

Matthis was a cool teacher, very funny at times, wont remember your name, but he will help you with whatever you need help with, and is open for student opinions,uses foul language from time to time, but who doesnt?

Jim is fun and inspiring. He can get a little weird at times, but he's able to let you shine if you're willing to be open-minded. You'll learn a lot about your own writing and why other people write the way they do. If you have a problem with "liberal" use of language in his class, then you probably shouldn't be in college to begin with.

Matthis is a great teacher. he will not except nonsense excuses about homework and poor writing when you can do better. i great preparation for university. he is funny and very passionate about literature. can be very rude. be prepared to defend your point of view. he will challenge your thinking. overall a great teacher.

Great teacher. His teaching style is very different. Not hard to understand. If you dont understand then asking him to explain it better is a good idea. His assignments are not hard. They are actually pretty interesting assignments. Only three people in my class passed including myself. Why? I'll never know...

He is not a nice teacher. He likes to make fun and give prssure to students, but he is a teacher that help you to write and he is smart on writing.13 students passed the Common Fianl except 1 fail. He did a pretty good job on teaching students to write. After I took his class, I found that writing an essay is not that hard. Thankful to Jim~~~

It has been 4 years since I took his class. I still remember him to this day. Amazing teacher, leaves a great impression. He knows when it's going to rain. Don't bull**** him, put in some effort, be honest, read the recommended books, he can teach you how to write an essay and more importantly, how to better live your life.

really tough teacher. you have to turn in your assignments every week. he is pretty tough but you will learn so much from the class about writing. If you want to get an easy grade dont take him but if you want to earn the grade then he will help you earn the grade yoou deserve. i got an A but i worked my ass off, but he was a great teacher.

Mr. Matthis teaches you how to properly structure an essay. It is great prep for 201. As long as you follow his requirements you'll do fine.

He is very rude. He makes you do a LOT of research, which is very time consuming. You do learn a lot in his class, but you have to do so much research. If you wanna work your bottom off, almost die, and learn alot, take him.

I never expected to learn so much. From the first day he drew me in. I just liked listening to him speak he is very influential. He is incredibly intelligent. I wish I would have been a little more outgoing in my speeches. I am thankful I got Mr. Matthis he is fabulous. He is still my favorite teacher! That was 98

Wow these bad reviews sound awful. I took his class several years ago and he was awesome. I know Jim can be tough but he wants you to do your best. I got a B+ and I felt like I earned it. I'm still very satisfied with that grade. He will always be my favorite!

Oh Mr. Matthis. Strictest teacher I've ever had. He speaks what's on his mind which can be hurtful at times, or even embarrassing for whoever he is speaking to. BUT?I've never learned so much!! He simplifies everything with such clarity. Wish more teachers were as helpful as he was. Guess the strictness helps keep us on track.

Matthis is awesome! dont take his class if youre not interested in working; he is PICKY!!!! so picky but an excellent professor. He is very playful during lecture. He will give you 5's and 10's across the board if you just show up and ask questions! Not as bad as everyone says.

Mr. Matthis is a really smart guy. Taking his class makes you feel like everything you've learned in the past is useless. He generally cares about his students, but he is EFFING HARD. If you miss one assignment, consider yourself failed. Missing class takes a huge chunk out of your grade. Hardest teacher I've ever had. But generally very funny.

This Professor is great! Never boring! That's what I like about it. His assignments are pretty standard so nothing too hard. Just don't be late, he takes off points when you're late, otherwise, Easy A.

I had Mr. Matthis for English and Literature and I can honestly say he's one of the best teachers I've ever had. He WILL help you become a better writer. A lot of people complain about him being mean or rude, but he's not there to be your friend. He's really a nice guy just trying to help you out and do your best, just pay attention & do the work.

He can be harsh but he genuinely want to help improve your writing skills. I suggest him to those who need a rough push in the right direction. If you are sensitive and lazy, avoid.

He is now added to one of my inspirational teachers. If you do all he assigns, everything is breezy in the class and his attitude towards the class, that is when you do what he says. I highly recommend taking one of his courses

He is neurotic but really pushes you to only deliver great literature pieces. You cannot take anything he says personally, and write down everything on the board. 3 major assignments and will always help you. But don't expect emailing or after class chatting. Go in with hard skin and an open mind.

Matthis doesnt F' around. Plain and simple, if you show up on time with your assignments and are ready to pay attention and not waste time this class will be GREAT. A lot of what I learned I carried to 201 and still use today in my writing. He's a bad ass if you felt he was rude you were probably late, texting, or unprepared.

On the top of my list of most memorable teachers. I loved him and hated him. He gives tough love and if you're not serious about getting a good grade, might as well drop the class before he is rude to you. Tough grader only if you don't follow his guidelines. He is very humorous when teaching, but he means business. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS he gives, otherwise your paper will not be accepted for full credit. He's a great teacher, and makes class fun. Do your research for papers!! The more specific it is, the better it is. Assignments are all outlines, presentations, and papers.

Typically, the general consensus about Professor Matthis is that he's generally unhelpful and confusing but it isn't true at all. You just have to be consistent and show that you're working hard. There's no way to give halfhearted work in this class without failing. Don't expect any easy-answers or papers. He gives you good longterm skills.

Not for lazy students. Don't skip class and aleays do the homework. Presentations and essays. He makes you think about college level issues but also outlines and grammar. Go to the office hours for help. Bring your work, not your excuses and he will help a lot.

He is a great Professor he is a tough grader but it will help you in the long run, if you paper is not what is expected it will be returned to you until you get it right I had a paper returned to me 3 times but because he did I learned from my mistakes and improved.

He does not seem like the best professor at first but if you stick to this class it will help you understand better and actually help you learn. If you have any questions he does seem intimidating at first but he isn't! He will help you with any questions or troubles you might have. If English is not your strongest subject I wouldn't recommend.

He was really tough but his methods are good in my opinion. He helped me pass my public speaking class and I'm sure my researching skills have skyrocketed. If you like using transitional words in your essays, stay away.

Dont know why so many people dont like him? He was honestly amazing. Funny too. He doesnt like when youre late or when the class doesnt participate. Other then that hes awesome. The class was literally effortless. Hes very reasonable with deadlines and assignment. One of the best teachers Ive had yet.

He was a fun teacher. He explained to me on how to write an essay (Technically on how to keep editing an outline) If you don't understand something in class, ASK. He is there to help you. Always participate and interact with him. He doesn't like talking to the class without someone interacting.

His lectures include a lot of participation from students, he dislikes it when you don't have questions or come into class late. Professor Matthis is very sarcastic and can seem like he is a jerk but he cares, he might not act like it but he is quite nice. Do your work, turn it in on time and participate and you will be set.

Professor Matthis was a really good professor. He lectures a lot during classes and really likes participation and group discussions; however he doesn't like when people are late or don't participate. I took this class online during Fall 2021 and it was fine. The first two weeks Matthis can have a jerk attitude but does that to make a college change to students. Three papers, three outlines, three summaries, and 3 quizzes for the year. Join the zoom meetings, ask questions, and get work done. Overall, a fine class and a funny professor.
