This class is cake as long as you go every day. His explanations of the Flowers' book help a lot.
It's kind of hard to follow his lectures at times, and he goes on random rants about various topics, but he's a good prof. Stick with it, read the book, DO THE HOMEWORK IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE ON THE TEST, and go to class every day, and you'll be fine.
His lectures weren't bad, but go to class to hear them or you won't understand the chapters. He doesn't offer any extra credit or assignments, just tests. So study hard for them and you'll be alright.

Entertaining. You must attend every lecture or you're going to be lost on test days. Not to mention he crams an hour and fifteen min. tests into a 50 min. class period.
He sucks
He's a bit political. Argue with him, and you'll have more fun in the class.
worst professor I've ever had. His tests are unreasonable. His expectations are unreasonable because his philosophy is you need to get beat up in his class in order to not get beat up in the world. This guy is ****ed up. Do not take a class with him as your prof. I'm forewarning you. I'm an "A" student and got a C- in one of his classes.
failed the majority of our class. The best grade on our first test was a 61%.
He is horrible! Does not take time to explain anything at all! Likes to go off on tangents that are boring and completely pointless. He tried to blame the class for our poor performance. He has to be the worst person in Econ and on campus. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
HATE THIS GUY!! Worst professor i dropped the class. I never missed class and i still didnt understand what he was talking about, went to the study sessions and the TA didnt know what the prof was teaching. Worthless! Also they dont tutor this, i got a 40% on the first exam and 2 percent higher the 2nd time then i dropped the class.DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I will just say this, I started out one semester with Flowers, and this guy is a saint compared to her. He was much more helpful, and much easier to understand. I still did bad in the class, but that's just because I have no interest in the subject. But if you have to take it, go with him.
very hard exam with so many weird questions
Good Prof compared to Flowers!! He posts practice problems on line that are helpful - could skip a class or two and watch these. Must use the book. Lets you choose what % of your overall grade the final's worth up to 100% of your grade! Could gets F's on all tests then make the final worth 100% of your grade and get an A!
Terribly unreasonable teacher, if you want to fail Econ 301 then take this class. All but about five people dropped the class after the first test, why?.. because they had no hope of passing... worst teacher ive had at Ball State.
GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!! GET OUT! YOU WILL FAIL I PROMISE!
Easy material if you pay attention. McClure has a problem with talking off-topic, mostly about politics or whatever else he feels like ranting about. And it's pointless to argue with him, he always has to have the last word and doesn't actually try to understand where you're coming from. Easy class, terrible prof.
scary class
Nice man but very difficult. Definitely get extra help outside of class.
He was the worst teacher I have ever had. Never helped students out, He made his own book that wasn't helpful at all! Went over material that even the Learning Center couldn't help with. Only had 3 tests and no assignments or extra credit. I attended class every day and still failed the class! I don't recommend him.
He recorded his live lectures and then posted them online. You didn't have to attend class. Always went off on tangents..I learned that he wants to move to the Bahamas and that he wants to hit the lottery so he doesn't have to teach anymore. Oh, and his wife is a physician. If you're not really good at math, stay away from his class.
Terrible professor! In class he tries to start talking about the econ we're supposed to learn but goes off on econ life lessons instead. He'll teach you the general idea of the subject, but never the details needed for test questions. Don't go to class, know the book like the back of your hand and maybe you'll pass.
He makes his tests unreasonably long, with a short time period. The final counts for most of your grade, and is cummlative. All other tests are open book, but the final is not. It is near 100 very difficult questions, and the time limit is 2 hours. His lectures do not relate to the book, but all test Q's are based on book
Absolutely love this guy. If you are at all interested in Economics this class will be fun for you. He is hilarious but you have to be pretty sharp to pick up on his humor.
This man is brilliant. People give him a lot of flack because he actually requires you to pay attention and know the material. He's also funny, but you have to be pretty quick to pick up on his humor. If you can understand the way he teaches, he is an awesome professor.
Great Teacher just expects you to pay attention and do your work. Test are tough but with studying its very passable.
This guy is one of the worst profs I've ever had. He gets incredibly off topic, & regularly. He spent 30 minutes of class one day talking about Las Vegas and didn't tie it back to the material what so ever. He doesn't lecture from textbook material but tests solely over the book. Tests are long and hard, contrary to another rater, not open book.
Every single class he got off topic and would never relate it back to the actual topic of Econ. He used pointless examples and would never respond to any of my emails. His tests were long and weren't over anything we talked about in class.
This class is tough. We will cover something in class for weeks, then move onto new material before taking the exam over the old stuff. Class is based on exams and final and 1 HW assignment. He does give study guides. Study hard.
He is nice, funny, easy going and wants to motivate his students. I liked going to class and listening to his lectures.
He is really a fantastic guy!!! As long as u take every class and listen carefully. U R going to get an easy A of this course. BTW, he has no HW, but only 4 quizzes and a final exam. All multiple choices!!!
He is really funny but he gets off topic a lot. He will finish a section of the course and move on to new info weeks before the exam. He is extremely right wing and is rather unwilling to listen to other viewpoints than his own. He is pretty funny though. Study hard! For some reason he makes 116 harder than his other classes. Take a different prof!
Drop this class now. He is awful he gets off topic every class and doesnt care to help you at all,
He is not a very good teacher he gets off topic really easily and his voice is so monotone it's difficult to pay attention. He does iclicker points but only gives you credit if you get the answer correct. It's not very fair but he does give you practice tests that help somewhat. His tests are really short but the class drags on for hours.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. he is actually terrible. he tries to make this class much harder than it is. and hes just an a hole. he doesnt do much because he is a 10 year. if your looking for a good professor for econ this is not one!
Don't take the class!!
It's important to take lots of notes and go to study sessions; sometimes he's hard to follow and tells stories- I'm pretty sure they go with the topic but I get a little lost sometimes. If you ask a question he always explains and appreciates participation. He can be a little cooky sometimes but he has a sense of humor and tries to make class fun.
The reviews for him are a little off. He's not the best professor I've ever had, but you just need to study hard and meet with the grad assistant and you'll do fine. He goes off topic A LOT but just take notes when he writes stuff on the board and overhead and you'll be fine. STUDY HARD. Only three tests and a final.
I definitely don't recommend this guy. The material was confusing mainly because he was distracted and talked more about his personal life. Going to the lecture is not enough you'll have to find other ways to study.
This guy was an oddball! I learned nothing during his lectures even though i really tried! The TA was more clear and you would need to go see her to actually pass this class. I would NOT recommend taking this class.
All around pretty easy class. It took me about a week to understand his lecturing style; he tells stories about his life but they are always related to the material. As long as you really pay attention and take notes its easy. He's seems like a cool guy and is hilarious
The guy is kinda weird. I was so scared to take this class because of the reviews on here and I'm really bad at Econ. But I did surprisingly well in the class. The lectures are kinda confusing, but he gives you a practice test to print out, and it's usually just like the test. I recommend making a few friends and studying with a group! Overall okay
He is a really nice guy if you talk to him. His lectures are a little weird, he mostly talks about alcohol in his examples, which is kinda funny. This is not an easy class! You really need to study outside of class and get help from the G.A. to actually do well in the class.
I don't know why this guys reviews are so low. he's hilarious and makes econ more fun and interesting. As long as you go to class and pay attention it is an easy A.
Do not take this professor! This professor was awful! I enjoy economics and have received great grades with minimal study except in his class. He will explain in great detail how to make a martini but never explains to his into econ class what GDP is. He doesn't do guided notes and studying off the lectures is impossible. Get the book and read it!
If I had an hour left in my life, I would choose to spend it in this class because it feels like 20 years. I hope that puts into perspective how bad the lectures are.
The class is set up so that there are three test and a final. He does not have structured notes but rather rambles on and occasionally draws a graph on the board with some long winded, unrelated explanation. He goes on a lot of tangents and loves to talk about how he would rather be on a beach with a martini. Honestly, he'd be better off there.
I don't know why these reviews are so low. I loved this guy. He was very helpful and explained things thoroughly. He is a bit wacked out, and talks about martinis a bunch. But he uses his classmates as examples to explain a situation, and he draws graphs a bunch. Be prepared to take lots of notes with graphs. He is very nice, and answers questions.
Took this guy in the Fall of 2016. Dude is hilarious and is extremely good at explaing things and tries to make class as fun and engaging as possible. If you take notes on whatever he writes on the board and use the practice exams before each test you will be fine. Practically an Econ class you probably took in High School. 10/10 would recommend
Dr. McClure was the best prof I had while at Ball State. He really knows his stuff and he is able to connect the information to everyday examples. The class was based on only a few grades however, so make sure you study for the tests or you will be sorry. He is tough, but is willing to help if you ask. Best professor I have ever had.
This is not an easy class. there is no attendance but you must come to class ready to pay attention every day or you will not pass. There are only 4 tests and you really have to work for your grade. That being said this was one of my favorite classes. McClure is super funny and very knowledgeable in ECON. you will learn so much and he will help you
I really liked Mr. McClure. He knows his stuff. However, his class is absolutely no joke. There's 3 regular exams and a final. No readings. No homework. Attendance isn't required, but if you don't show up there's absolutely no way you'll pass. He makes you work for your grade. He is very available for help in and out of class.
This guy barely stays on subject and talks way too much about his skewed right wing politics. It was so hard to pay attention and I'm not here for politics. I'm here for facts and information. 10/10 wouldn't recommend.
This guy tried to crack off jokes every now and then, but when trying to teach you about Economics, his lectures are dryer than stale bread. He spends multiple class periods drawing the same graph examples over and over and his notes that he takes during class are hard to follow. He has 4 tests during the semester and only one extra credit....
I highly recommend James. The homework is easy, and he provides extra credits. He likes to use examples and graphs. If you are a visual learner, and hate people just reading the PPT/Textbook, definitely choose him.
Its a very tough class but he is a great professor. Tests are hard so take lots of notes. Homework is based off your notes. Definitely one of the hardest classes I have taken but it is ok if you put the work in.
The grading scale in this class is a mess, you miss one point on the graph and you'll lose 10 points on a 30 point quit or a 60 point tests. Homework makes up decent part of your grade but not enough to bring you back up. He constantly goes on tangent about his right winged views. He is smart man but maybe too smart for his own good.
McClure is one of my favorites! His lectures are amazing and he really knows what he's talking about. He goes through a lot quickly so don't skip and try to get everything down on notes. Notes and homework and tests are basically the same and he tells you what's on them. Literally don't know how people get anything less than a B.
Hes descent and available after class. Sometimes he sounds like hes falling asleep while hes writing on the board. Hard to follow. Lots of politics. Nice guy.
(Sec. 2 Spring 2019) Very bright but seemed not prepared when lecturing and rambled on leaving most of us confused. I like that the quizzes were based on homework but if you miss a single class you will definitely be lost. He encourages questions but gets annoyed when we dont grasp the concept. You have to work to pay attention and understand
Never boring. Always makes the best efforts to keep the lectures interesting. I did not like how test heavy the class was and how he would close the homework a week before the test. That made it harder to study.
Dr. McClure is a hilarious professor who's not afraid to throw in comedic anecdotes to make his class more enjoyable. You can pass the first exams just by doing the online HW and reading the textbook, but do yourself a favor and go to class anyway - he'll teach you more and he'll enjoy it. The last exam you must go to class for the info though.
This professor gives opportunities for extra credit but the class is so hard and the professor does not teach well. I ended up with an A in the class but I had to work really hard and do all extra credit and honestly still dont fully understand the material in my opinion. The content wasnt taught thoroughly or clearly And the grading was weird.
Tough grader, greatly values specificity. Always tries to connect the economic principles taught to topical and interesting current events. It made the class easier to pay attention in.
When he's trying to be funny and engaging, he is. But his lectures and graphs can get boring.
Was in section 2 Spring 2019, Dr. McClure is a respectable man that likes to crack a joke from time to time. This class must be taken seriously though. He wont hand you an A, but if you are willing to study and get to know Jimmy Mac then youll be fine. Attendance is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY. Wont pass if you dont go. Also review a little calc.
Too many lectures during the semester and I learned more by watching ACDC econ in 10-20 minutes then I ever did in the 40+ minutes lectures during the semester. DId not like the way he taught economics either. I will give him the factor that hes probably a decent/good teacher in person, I just didn't like it online.
Worst professor Ive ever had in my whole entire life. The whole class is based off of 3 exams and the final exam. If you fail one exam then youre screwed and the final is 90% of your grade. Good luck if you take him online!!
Terrible. I had him online and there were so many lectures that I was always watching them back to back in order to take the exam on time, even though I thought I had paced them well to begin with. Lectures are long and boring and it was hard for me to understand or pay attention to them. 3 exams and 1 final that are difficult but not awful.
Not a good professor at all. I hate him. Don't take his class if u plan on having a stress-free good semester.
Frequently stated blatantly false, easily fact-checked info in his lecture. When masks were required, spent the start of each class complaining. Lectures weren't helpful. Refused to accommodate when computer crashed during a test, despite having a day left until the due date. The online resources and study guides are the best resources for passing.
He is so boring...his lectures relate in no way to Econ like he just tells stories and tries to get you to laugh. I never have any idea what he is talking about. The tests are hard and if you don't try to study you won't pass. The class is only worth 100 points and that's the entire semester and the way he weights the grade is ridiculous.
A great professor overall and makes the classroom a very entertaining experience. He is very easy with the homework giving you a lot of time to do it and also with the exams. Do expect to study and take notes. He will explain things if you just ask after class. Overall a good teacher that likes what he teaches overall cares if you care.
Dr. McClure is one of my favorite professors. He is great at teaching micro-theory and is always open to discussing with students outside of class. Those who complain about the difficulty of the class confuse me. He gives 10 take-home quizzes (50% of your grade) and a term paper (50% of your grade). Simply do your work and you will be fine.
Do not take this professor. The worst I had at Ball State. His examples that he uses to go over the material do not correlate with the homework whatsoever.
Lectures mainly consist of the readings assigned. The readings have nothing to do with the homework. There are prerecorded lectures that cover the homework material. I did not watch any of the live lectures and only watched the prerecordings. However, the final paper is long and uses his sources, many of which he wrote himself. Just do the work.
Entire grade depends on your grade on the final paper. He is the most monotone guy i've ever heard speak. So boring and you can't pay attention even if you did cocaine.
This dude is nowhere near as bad as these reviews say. ECON 201 from him was test heavy, which is personal preference. He gives example problems every day. I think if you don't do well you just aren't trying. He shows how to solve problems quite often. No pop quizzes, just a few exams which are weighed heavily in the final grade. Just study for em.
McClure is just mid. His class is 50% Homework (1 per week) and then a 50% 20 page 20 source paper at the end. Would not recommend for online students but im sure its fine in person.
70 percent of your grade is tests and attendance is taken for points. Lectures are also extremely boring.
I am someone who usually gets all A's. This is the worst class I've taken. The reason this class sucks so bad is because the tests are worth 75% of your grade and they are all on lockdown browser. He tells us to study but the only things to study are the assignments given but those only relate to the book which we don't even look at during class.
You have 3 exams that are worth 70% of your entire grade which I don't like but the only good thing about that is the last exam is NOT cumulative. Attendance is worth 5% of your grade but his handwriting is hard to read, he goes off on tangents all the time that are unrelated, he writes very fast, the only good thing is that he's kinda funny
tenured dinosaur who cant teach a preschooler 2+2. dont take this guy unless they have a gun to your family. bigger villain than Thanos
LET me tell you, he told us to make notecards to help study, we learned that back in 5th grade, Ended up withdrawing from this class, only thing I learned was that his wife was to cheap to call a plumber. (Not joking). Take this course at ivy tech. HE NEEDS TO RETIRE
When taking this class be prepared to take two seperate sections. There are differences between what he teaches in class vs the homework assigned online.
Wouldn't ever miss a class because you have no idea what is going to happen. Jokes aside this course is very easy to pass if you realize this class is graded on your understanding of the material, not assignments, or unrelated math skills. Listen and learn what the man has to say, and the exams are easy.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever taken during my undergrad. Spends class time complaining about the university and how he is underpaid. He does not explain the material well and does not like when you ask for help. He makes fun of disabled students and the mentally ill. Just overall a very disrespectful professor that needs to retire.
Good professor. He puts a lot of effort into lectures and tries to keep it interesting. He's also very knowledgable about his subject. Lectures can be a little slow sometimes but I feel like that's normal for econ. The grade is test-heavy but the tests are managable. Most of these other reviews seem unreasonable, so don't worry about it too much.
This man needs to retire. He's hands down the worst professor I've had. You get 8+ weekly online assignments (10-20 questions each), and all I've learned is how he disrespects his wife and makes a martini. The bad reviews aren't exaggerating—I regret ignoring them. Do yourself a favor and take someone else. BSU, fire him and use the money better.
I love Dr. McClure. Generally a standard lecture class, but he teaches it well. If you're into economics he's down to answer follow-up questions and makes it interesting. Probably my favorite class I've taken at BSU thusfar, only complaint is some of the homework assignments don't tie into the class material or tests so they can feel superfluous.
All the reviews are kinda true tbh. he does a Lotta off topic yapping, but that's what keeps it interesting. he does cover the subject matter decently well. not a bad professor just a tough subject. also there is a bit too much homework ngl.
An ADHD's worst nightmare, he is the most boring and monotone speaker he literally puts himself to sleep half the time. he goes off topic to rant about vodka and loses his train of thought every 5 seconds. gives no context to the lectures and unless you have a tablet you can't keep up because he graphs beforehand and moves too fast.
