not too clear, but will spend time 1on1. dry sense of humor. take this prof.
tries hard, available, exams easy, java programs - hard, goes too fast
Great Professor if you want to actually learn something in these programming classes here, HWs are not too easy not too hard.. just about rite.. but sometimes he can go a little too fast on some confusing topics..but always available for one on one
Good professor, gives lots of examples and explains things clearly. Will work with you personally if you need help.
He helps all his student. He takes attendance in the beginning of the semester. After that, he dosetn' really care. Show him effort, he will give you good grade. He willing to help
Brilliant teacher, excellent communicator, very helpul to the students, superb exams and homeworks, inovativ with his presentations, a memerising sense of humor. He has a charming Irish style, it was pleasure taking his classes. I learned a hell of a lot.
He the best ever teacher. I loved his teachings. He will get repeat bussiness from me. I will take all the classes that he teaches

He reminds me a lot of Jon Madden, he rambles on a little bit and scribbles nonsense on the board once in a while but he is a very good teacher. He does his best to help you out if you dont understand
good professor and will help you when you need it, but you do have hw do almost every week
Nice professor.... Respects students... just do your homeworks and assignments.... likes novatoric ideas... ;)
excellent
hope u know how to do the stuff before u take the class.
I loved this class. A very helpful and funny guy. Overall, a very nice professor. Cute too. :)
Like the guy below says, i just hope you know how to do stuff. cuz he doesn't cover the basic stuff about html, java etc. Breezing through the assignments and excercises from day 1. But if u seek for help, hes a good guy.
like the guy below says, i hope u know how to do stuff. because he doesn't cover the basic stuff of class materials.(java, html etc)
As long as you already know html this class is easy and Prof is very helpful, constantly asks if anyone needs help or further explanation
Great Professor. He grades you on the quality of your work more than the number. If you get good grades on the assignments and not do well on the tests, you will still pass the class. He goes off on a tangent during his lectures but he is an excellent Prof. Highly recommended.
Allmy professors should be as sharp as concerned as helpful as Prof. McHugh.
Good prof. Very lenient on grades and flexible with project requirements. Exams based on sample questions. Projects are not hard if you know basic HTML, CSS, JS. Lecture videos cover the same things covered in class, so take online section to save yourself time; live lectures are a total snoozefest. His course layout is a bit unorganized though...
Online version: no textbook necessary, everything based on his video lectures. No weekly HW, just 4 JQuery/PHP/Rails/HTML projects, 1 due every month. Midterm+final. Flexible grading. Only complaint is that lecture/assignment listing could do with some streamlining to make it easier to read. Definitely recommend him for this course otherwise.
Easiest class I took at NJIT hands down.
Excellent class and excellent professor. Goes out of his way to provide all necessary materials and explains questions you raise in detail. Video lectures online. Highly recommend honor's section; gives more interesting work as opposed to more work.
Great Professor, while it's up to you to pay attention, he will teach this class as if you basically had know prior knowledge, which is key because a lot of people don't. He is very lenient, and helpful with projects, and was a fair grader. Exams were tough, but he gives exactly what's on there. Pay attention so you don't get lost or behind.
Was a good class, great professor. Assignments were weekly at first, then switch to every two weeks. Assignments relatively easy but gave a good understanding to various Web Development Topics. The professor is more than willing to help you understand the materials, and he gives you a lot of opportunities for extra credit.
Videos are available explaining how problems can be solved. Videos & Lectures are good to listen to, if your having problems coding. Overall, Class it's not a hard class, there's plenty of chances to get extra points.
Very interesting class, you will definitely learn stuff even if you have no interest. 2 quizzes and weekly assignments and that's pretty much your whole grade. He give you room to do extra credit on each assignment which is great. Definitely take this professor for this class, you will receive a good grade because its a fun class!
Professor McHugh is truly an amazing professor! He is passionate about his teaching which only makes classes more pleasurable. If material in class is not clear you can watch his extensive set of videos which will clear up most questions. Weekly assignments are creative and challenging. I Highly recommend this class!
McHugh is the best!...I used to struggle with concepts like PHP, MySql, and RoR, and after his class I feel confident that I could achieve greatness in a related field!
Really good class I learned a lot from Prof McHugh. If your interested in HTML, CSS, PHP, JS, and Ruby this class is for you! You are mainly graded on your weekly assignments so as long as you do the work you will do well in this class and if you have any problems McHugh will help you in or out of class. I highly recommend this course.
It was an interesting course and great professor. I learnt a lot of programming techniques in details from weekly assignments. Prof. Mchugh was very helpful when I had questions. Highly recommended.
This guy is the Micheal Jordan of professors. I swear he could temper Kayne's ego, teach Shaq how to shoot a basketball, and teach a blind orangutan how to code all in the same week! This man will somehow be linked when the cure for cancer comes out. ABSOLUTELY TAKE HIS CLASS and learn what you can from this god amongst nerds.
It is a very useful course if you want to be a web developer. you'll learn advanced techniques in web programming. Very nice and helpful professor, but his assignments are sometimes confusing about what he expects us to do.
A high-quality professor, indeed. He'll help you as much as you need, and won't give up until you understand the concepts. The course material is all webmobile development, and it's very relevant and practical. Highly recommended professor for anyone planning to be a web developer.
Dr. McHugh is arguably one of the best professors NJIT has in their faculty; it is no surprise that he has been awarded the "University Teaching Excellence Award." Dr. McHugh is more than just a professor; he is a great mentor to students as well. I wish he would teach more courses at NJIT, I would take his courses every time without hesitation.
Great class, even better professor. Hands down one of the best courses I have taken in my computer science career. Professor teaches via assignmentsprojects which are directly correlated to a real world web devcs it job.
Easily one of the best courses I've taken at NJIT. The professor is brilliant. Very clear assignments with very thorough explanations and video lectures related to each assignment. The professor really goes out of his way to explain the material. He makes learning PHP like learning a letter in the alphabet.
I enjoyed taking IT 202 with McHugh so much that I did not hesitate to take 302 with him as well. The way you learn in his class is so different than all of my other classes and I feel that the most I have learned so far at NJIT comes from what he has taught me. Go in motivated and you will be able to take away a lot from his class.
Prof. Mchugh is a great professor with an interest in everything he teaches. If you have an interest in Website Dev and want hands-on projects then this class is awesome. He gives you interesting projects and if you do all of them, you will get an A in the class. The class is split into half lecture and half lab where he helps with the assignments.
I'll get straight to the point: if you don't ' get ' this man's brilliance maybe you should consider taking basket weaving courses ! Look at his academic background, his publishing history, his emeritus status at NJIT !!! HE IS A GENIUS .
Definitely take this course if you are interested in learning jquery and phonegap. I came into the class with no prior experience with either and can now make advanced apps for mobile. McHugh is willing to let you take on your own projects, effectively making the class an independent study and making the best use of your time to really learn.
The professor helps you out when you need help. Very lenient grader and gives a ton of extra credit. He's a really nice guy and I would recommend him for anyone that has the option of taking his class. Just make sure to attend class so you don't get lost doing the homework. Overall, the class was pretty interesting.
Awesome professor. Really wants students to understand and is more than willing to help with any assignment. He clearly loves what he does and it shows.
If anyone gets below B it's their mistake.
Professor McHugh is one of my favorite professors in NJIT. He's extremely helpful and I've learned a lot from his classes.
Professor mchugh is a very inspirational teacher, I learned so much in his class! He is truly one of the more brilliant professors on campus and it was a pleasure having him this semester!
He is a great professor. Just try your best and show up for every class. Show him that you are trying every assignment and you will pass. Always there for you when you need help with anything.
This has been the most influential professor to date! He cares for your work. If you don't understand something, he will explain it to you where you can understand it. His rare trait in professors is that he cares for others. Throughout his lecture, he asks, "Does anyone have questions?" Do you work and show up to class for attendance!
It's very easy to get extra credit. He's very helpful. If you attend class and do the homework, you should be good, but his course materials are unclear and outdated
teacher is very soft-spoken. If you don't sit close you won't be able to hear the professor and if you can't hear him then you can't understand him and that in turn will cause you to fail. Especially when the material is already confusing enough as is.
Go to all of the classes and you will pass. Listen and take notes. He also helps you with all of your work.
He really gives you time to work with assignments that are expected to be done by whatever time interval he gives you. Each assignment flows with the other and equals out to one big project and it's cool seeing it all done. He always gives people a chance to obtain more points in the class and he's there to help out. Highly recommend.
Professor is very generous in grading. If you get less than A in his class then you a scrub. MySQL for php and vanila js are very much old school yet he still uses them. Time to learn django or rails..
He is so helpful and you learn a lot
Professor James is one of the best professors at NJIT. His lectures were based of him showing code samples and explaining them to show you how they would apply to the real world and in projects. I am a CS major and IT 202 was one of the best classes I enjoyed at NJIT.
Professor McHugh is one of the best professors at NJIT. He gives you decent amount of time to finish up your assignments. I learned a lot in his class and assignments were really very interesting. He grades fairly and gives you a lot of extra credits. Go to every class and take good notes. He is always there for you when you need help with anythin
Amazing professor!! He really knows his stuff and is really passionate about what he's teaching. He also wants you to do your best in the class so if you're ever confused or have a question he's always there to help you out. As long as you put in the time, do the homework, and listen in class you should be fine and pass the class with no trouble.
Great professor, you really learn a lot. Definitely need to go to class and pay attention to help get the assignments done. He's more than happy to help during class and would always stay after to help. Gives lots of extra credit, exams are not bad as long as you study the reviews. I would definitely take a class taught by him again.
I took this class as an elective and I loved it. This class was one of the best classes I have taken at NJIT. The professor is a fair grader. You would learn a lot. Homework is based on what is thought in class. Pay attention and don't get behind are the key to getting a good grade. There is a midterm and a final. Excellent professor and material.
He is one of the best professor in NJIT. I really recommend you to take this course even though it's not that easy. You would learn a lot what you didn't know. If you have any question about class or assignment, just ask him then you would get an extra credit. Also he has a speedy reply with email. He always keeps listening for your question.
Prof. McHugh teaches this class really well with real world applications. Speedy email responses and always available after classes to help students. The languages and topics taught in this class certainly prepares students for IT302, CS/IT491 the Capstone project. Take him if you want to learn programming and best/standard programming practices.
Prof. Mchugh is good professor he explains till every one know that concept and Assignment will be dependent on small weekly prototype if you do all prototypes as per his instruction then you can easily do all assignments & he always appreciates student if you do extra bonus work in all prototypes & assignment If you work then you can easily get A
He gives a lot of assignments to complete, but if you pay attention in class he gives you plenty of time to work on the assignments and answers all questions. If you study/memorize and understand the practice exams that he gives out you will do well.
I am really fond of Professor James McHugh's practical and hands on approach to teaching. I have learnt a lot more useful things from his course than i did from most others. I interned at a financial firm and needed to develop a php based user reporting system and this class was a life saver. My friend who took this course feels the same way!
Lots of homework. Three projects based on homework. One 1-2 page report. One 5 minute presentation based on report. Textbook not required. Midterm/final based on review questions. Two quizzes based on review questions. Generous grading with a lot of extra credit. He's there for you whenever you need help. Replies to emails fast.
Replies to emails fast. Gives lots of bonus points if you implement extra stuff in assignments. Lots of work, but gives time so they're doable. 3 assignments, 1 presentation w/ 2 page paper. He can be very unclear with his instructions so ask lot of questions. No book needed. Be ready to learn some things on your own. I'd take him again for sure.
Replies to emails very quickly. If you need help with ANYTHING he will make time to help you but you need to be willing to ask for help. Lots of extra credit and will give you the exact questions to be on the midterm and final. The assignments are all based on HTML, PHP, and JavaScript.
Honestly one of the greatest Professors I have ever had. If you aren't doing well, just talk to him and he will help. Not Worth to drop.
This class is heavily based on programming, specifically PHP. Prof McHugh is a fair and informative teacher, however, a strict grader. His lectures are not to miss as the assignments and tests are purely based on the lectures. The lectures are fun and interactive. He is willing to help a student during and after class. I recommend this course.
It was my first time learning about back-end programming and utilizing PHP and SQL. He was very thorough and detailed in his lectures, making it easy when you do your assignments and understanding the concepts in general. The first hw assignments are fairly easy, then will eventually build to a working web application. Great Prof, highly recommend!
Amazing professor. Was always willing to help if you needed it and if you performed well in the class it was more than likely that you would be given extra credit. Very nice guy to talk to outside and in class.
Definitely one of the better teachers at NJIT. Sadly he teaches IT classes and I'm a CS major. I did get the privilege of taking his class in IT202 which was an amazing experience. If you have any free electives, I recommend taking this class to help you in the future, especially if you're a CS major. It will come to help when you take CS 490.
He's really not bad. The work is okay as long as you pay attention to everything he put on the board. Follow his code and you'll be alright. He's really helpful and responds to emails quick. He also gives a lot of extra credit. There's like 6 prototypes and 3 assignments you'll have to do but they're very manageable.
He's an amazing professor, and I was able to connect with him a lot. He really cares not only about grades, but also the fact that you can understand the topics/code he covers. Of course, the class I took with him was a lot of code, but even beginners were somehow able to learn code (from scratch in some cases) under his guidance.
This was one of the most hands-on class I have taken at NJIT. You will gain exposure to a lot of web technologies which are useful for future internship positions. The professor is always willing to help and is very understanding. He encourages in-class participation and walks around helping students with their code for assignments and prototypes.
IT 202 introduces web technology useful to a CS major for the senior project. Prof Mchugh is caring and will help fix any bugs. The class itself isn't hard as long as you follow the instructions. Study the guide for midterm and final. One short coming is the lack of organization at times with the lecture but overall ok.
Professor James is an individual. He will make his utmost efforts to help you out. He is understanding as well. The class content can be life-changing. It gives you a healthy overview of the whole web stack and gives a taste of what it means to be a web developer. For someone like me, it gave me a career path to follow.
Mchugh although is participation methods may seem weird, he actually teaches this course well, the content is shoved into your face most of the time, but the assignments and prototypes help make those concepts clearer as you go along. Gives a lot of extra credit and helpful advice when completing assignments. Honestly one of the best profs around.
Even without any web dev experience going into this class, Professor McHugh is extremely accommodating and very willing to help. His teaching style is a bit fast, but he will not hesitate to help you if you are stuck on something. Assignments are doable but require effort, and he gives study guides for the midterm/final. Great guy
McHugh was an okay professor at the beginning of the semester but as we moved toward the BIG assignments, he became less and less helpful. SQL and PHP can be really confusing for first-timers so not being able to get reliable help from the professor sucks. His regular HW is fine, but the big assignments and exams can kill your grade.
Great prof. One of the best at NJIT. Knows his stuff and knows how to teach. Sometimes the assignment instructions can be confusing so just ask in class for clarification and he will be very helpful. Reasonable grader and plenty of extra credit. Make sure to get ready to work outside class and just do not start projects at the last minute.
If you want real skills make sure to do all of the extra credit and take on the challenges. You can go from knowing nothing to basically being hire-ready. Do the projects really well and there's 3 resume bullet points right there. The man really cares about learning. If you only put in the bare minimum you are missing out on so much opportunity.
McHugh is a really nice professor. You have a few major projects in the class, as well as some homework assignments that tie in with it. His lectures go over most of the things you have to do for them. For exams, he gives practice tests that you should go over. If you participate a lot of in class, he'll give extra credit. 10/10 recommend.
