Awesome. My mentor. Uncanny abilityt to peel the wool AWAY from our eyes. Gets apathetic freshman to love books and keep taking EH classes until they graduate with a degree and teach EH themsleves. (If you're reading this Doc, it's Chad).

McKelly is fabulous-I loved his class, would have taken it for the pleasure of being in it alone. My mentor, a wonderful man.
I would recommend his classes to anyone. he's a great teacher. warning: don't cry when you see the final exam.
Dr. McKelly is extremely likable, but you will also learn a lot from him. If he taught all English classes the world would be a better place :)
Jim demands a high quality of writing and provides support for those who seek.
Makes class worth attending; Jim isn't overly difficult and he is fair. He does a great job of connecting with each student.
he´s awesome
Dr. McKelly is awesome. He goes out of his way to help his students and makes English both interesting and fun. I look forward to going to class.
He definitely knows how to captivate his audience. He takes great books and converts them to stories that you can use to help even your own life improve. Great teacher, very student friendly!
Incredible teacher... Really loves his classes, cares about the students and wants them to succeed. Truly an amazing prof, mentor, and friend. Captivates his audience- you will WANT to go to class! A word to the wise: don't be late and read your material!
Amazing techer! Take any class from him if you can.
Amazing teacher. I have learned so much from him. He lets you fail a few quizes without penalty, so you dont have to read when pressed for time. Incredibly difficult tests, but study a lot and you'll know it. Make sure you raise your hand. :)
Great teacher; pay attention in class, contribute to discussions, and occasionally read and you will do well in the class
Dr. McKelly might be the best prof I've ever had. I took several of his classes and was never disappointed. He's a great teacher and a great mentor. Even if you aren't an English major, try to take his class. Everyone should benefit from this awesome prof
The best professor at Auburn by far. He is willing to do whatever it takes to make sure you do well, but you have to put in the effort. I would recommend for ANYONE to take his classes. They are amazing.
Dr. McKelly is really great! Discussions in class are always lively and he's got a great sense of humor. Just be active in class and you'll be fine!
The best Prof at Auburn. Beware to those who are afraid to have a mind opening, perception shifting experience! All others are encourgaed to dive in and enjoy. McKelly doesn't reward slackers :)Class doesn't get any better than his.
hard, dont put yourself through it unless your a buttkissin student
Best english teacher I've had at Auburn! Easy A as long as you keep up with readings. I did not stress at all for this class. Gives quizes everyday and his test are all quotes. (He gives you the quotes during lectures...)
I felt that this teacher too often speeks without thinking. He misquotes and makes false statements. McKelly often over-emphasizes one theme only to ignore other defining characteristics of the literature. I found him exasperating.
I dislike professors making blatantly false statements. But his ability to stimulate thinking and actually interest students in Lit is amazing. If he would just watch what he says he would be the perfect prof.
He is amazing!! best professor I've had so far at Auburn
Honors Writing Sem II - Dr. Mc has a good sense of humor. He likes to step back and let the students discuss what's up. He's open to new methods and new ideas. while the conversations were interesting, I did almost walk out of his class several times.
This is the 1st class at AU that I didn't sit there and stare at the clock as each sec goes by.He is a good teacher just because he relates everything to realisitic issues that WE/college students have faced, will face, or am facing at the time.
Everyone told me to take McKelly b/c he was awsome, but I really didn't like his personality. Arrogant, opinionated, wouldn't let students finish their thoughts. He's generally well liked, but not my favorite. I left frustrated and complaining to my roommate every day. Decent class overall.
good teacher...no papers to write just good lectures and pretty casual tests based on quotes from the material you read...
Very interesting professor. He keeps you extremely interested in the books you read for his class. Very much a discussion class, so if you dont like to speak out loud I would suggest to get another teacher. No papers!!!
He is the best teacher I have had here at auburn. He is so intresting and helpful he makes the class fun. Our class participated so much he didnt make us write papers or take alot of the quizzes. He is really kind of funny too. Take him for great books you will not regret it! He is an awesome guy!
If you want to hate going to class, take McKelly. At times he is hysterical but in general he reinforces his opinions repeatedly and leaves no room for independent thoughts and views. He taught Composition and never assigned any papers. Uses words incorrectly and is full of****. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Material is fairly entertaining, movies are stellar, but out of class time required. No papers (but they are on the syllabus, if he deems necessary). Tests come from in class discussion. Crazy guy, the discussion often gets completely wild with overanalysis of the material. Books are books.A+ prof
Awesome professor. Not only is his class thought-provoking, but he also genuinely cares for his students. It's really easy to make an A, too.

Overall a good class- it takes some time and effort (doing this reading is necessary) and you have to be open-minded in class. Participate a lot and you should have no problem.
Most Fear great books unless they are an English major-but take this professor and it is guarnteed a good exp. The only catch is, you must be willing to read the materails and discuss them open-mindly in class. Honestly though-Dr. McKelly is AWESOME:) I think you will find the class very interesting as well as a growing exp. as it makes you think
This was a great class. It was very thought stimulating and well organized. McKelly is a great professor and a really nice guy too. He helped me alot outside of class. Come into it with an open mind, and you will be rewarded with an awesome learning experience.
If you want to hate life, take this class. He is the worst teacher I've ever had and sitting in class every day was unbearable. You will get out of class late every day. Terrible teacher..... if you take him, may God have mercy on your soul (and your sanity). Enough said.
We all know that World Lit isn't exactly a "fun" class, but McKelly makes it interesting and thought-stimulating. That being said, you have to be open-minded and willing to speak up in class. He definitely make world lit a lot more bearable.
mckelly picks favorites. dont speak up if you dont know your stuff inside out - he will humiliate you. also, dont bring in new ideas - he focuses on a couple themes for the whole class and nothing else. and yes, this was a comp class, and no, we didnt write any papers. waste of my time...
Awesome teacher! We have quizzes everyday, but they are easy as long as you read! Makes discussion fun and interesting! Take him! He is one of my favorite teachers at Auburn!
I really liked him. I was very impressed with the way he organized his class. Discussions were very interesting and thought-provoking. You should go in with an open mind. Some of the material we studied was very depressing, but he made me see it in a new light. I definitely recommend him!
very good teacher. i hate english and am horrible at it and i got an A in the class. made class very interesting and fun. definately take him!
Awesome teacher!! He is a really funny guy and makes class interesting and asks us question about AU Football. Take him!
The HARDEST English teacher I have come across here at Auburn. In addition to KILLER tests and papers, he had us do weekly webCT postings (even during Spring Break!) Makes you read theory that is impossible to understand and makes you feel like an idiot in class. Also makes you watch movies on ****s and lesbian lovers which make you sick.
Way too hard. Tests are basically impossible to finish in the 50 min. The theory was tough, but the class was even tougher because he spoke like he was writing his own theory throughout every class. If he would only put away his word-a-day calendar, and talk to his students like normal people.
sucks. Assigned reading from a period other than what GBI is intended. Joseph Conrad is not in the GB I period. Did I mention he sucks and does not follow the ENGL dept policies
Modern British Lit. McKelly is very much stuck on himself. We had 2 grades in class, 2 papers - one mid-semester and one just before end. He's a jerk and a total waste of time
not a bad teacher, but he is very stuck on himself. if you can memorize exactly what he says in class and spit it back out on tests then you will do alright. also if you arent a big talker in class stay clear. class participation is a big part of the class!
An asset to this University and the epitome of what a professor should be. Expects students to prepare and participate in class; NOT an unrealistic expectation! His class guarantees an exceptional education and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Slackers and bigots should look elsewhere for their crip courses.
Dr. McKelly definitely has his own way of doing things, but I liked it, we didn't have to write any papers, the tests were long, but not impossible. You can't miss class and you have to write down what he says word for word and spit it back out on the tests. Lots of reading/daily quizzes but that's expected of great books. I would take him again!
don't take his class if you're not a big talker. we didn't have to write any papers, just 3 tests. I really struggled with the tests, but at the same time several of my classmates breezed through them. So, I guess it just depends on the type of person you are.
He is a great teacher for anyone that fears World Lit and waits til the last minute to take it. Don't really have to read the books in order to pass the quizzes b/c sparknotes save you every time. one funny thing, he never fails to wear khakis, t-shirt and an unbuttoned button down shirt with rolled sleeves.
He is a really great professor. You ABSOLUTELY must talk in his class. I got an A in the class because I did exactly what was expected. He is not hard, just challenging. If I got an A, anyone can!
Ok so I hated McKelly at first but he WILL grow on you! Once you get passed the fact that he always talks about his daughter & his "passion" for documentary film your fine! He is EXTREMELY liberal, so watch what you say! (im a female and i'm saying this!) The tests are straight from the discussions. He ended up being one of my favorite teachers!
I cannot stress how intelligent, understanding, and halarious Mr. McKelly is. He truly cares about his students and wants each of us to succeed! This is one of the first English classes I have taken at Auburn and LOVE! Just go to class, take IN-DEPTH word for word notes, participate, and you will certainly have no problem! :)
I love Prof. McKelly! His class changed my life...he's awesome, and everyone should have to take him.
Dr. McKelly is literally the best teacher I've had at Auburn. He has high expectations of his students which he very much helps them to achieve. He's highly encouraging, comical, and passionate about the material which he's teaching. Take him!
McK is the best. I can't get enough of this class. If you like to think and look past the obvious then you will enjoy yourself, otherwise you'll feel overwhelmed. Tests are hard to finish in the hour given, but not too hard. go to class and you should have no problem!
HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hated his class and his grading! Terrible class and boring. he is never pleased no matter how are you try
Dr. McKelly is probably one of the best english professors at Auburn. He is not at all easy...in fact he demands quite a lot but you will walk out of his class thankful for him. The key to getting a good grade is to attend EVERY class and participate MULTIPLE times every day.
HORRIBLE! Stay away if you can. Daily quizzes and His tests are just short answer where he writes one word and you have to describe everything about that one thing. It can be something you don't even remember, something that has only been brought up once. He trys to be a nice guy but really he expects WAY too much from his students.
Required students to read novels in a week. Also required "movie" sessions in ADDITION to regular class where you watch an older film of his choice and discuss it. If you're an English major this may be ok, but if not, don't bother.
Best teacher I've ever had!
I had him for World Lit 1 and his lectures were good and he overall was a pretty good teacher but when he says his tests come from the notes in class that is not entirely true. I had 70 flash cards with quotes and such and when the test came I had no idea what 7 out of 15 were. So preparation for the tests are nearly impossible if you want an A.
i am in love with mckelly. this class was a little more lecture oriented than the film i had him for but still great. open your mind and let what he says sink in and it will change you
No matter how much you talk in class you will never get 100 percent particpation. He is rude and not helpful. He only allowed us 30 minutes to complete his final exam. Do not take this class! He is impossible to please.
Mckelly is a great teacher. He is always there for you. If you take this class and try hard like you should you should have no problem passing. He is in depth and fun with great in class descion. Take him if you can and want! Great for english majors which is what I am.
He is a very hard teacher, and you will have to work, but you will learn A LOT. Only take if you really love literature. His lectures are incredible. Daily reading quizzes, fair with grading/testing if your class works hard.
I absolutely LOVED Dr. McKelly as a professor and as a person, but his exams were by far the most challenging things I've ever taken. Its almost impossible to predict what to study for, and there's only 2 exams, so good luck making a good grade in this class.
McKelly is the only professors at Auburn that actually teaches you. My brain hurt after class periods and yet I couldn't wait for the next class period to begin! The concept were so vast it took several days to grasp my hands around it. His tests are hard but not impossible. I got a C on the 1st test and A on 2nd. Very rewarding class! TAKE HIM
Excellent teacher with very interesting and entertaining classes. Take good notes about everything he says in class because he wants you to spit it back out to him on his tests. If you pay attention and take good notes, his tests aren't too hard. Take him! :)
Dr. McKelly does a fantastic job teaching, and a great job explaining the concepts in the books read in class. He is absolutely brilliant. However, his tests are semi difficult, so take good notes and listen in class. He also takes daily Reading quizes that are very easy, if you read. I highly recommend him.
McKelly has interesting lectures, but since he's taught the same thing for 25+ years, he's very close-minded to student answers that aren't exactly what HE wants. He is pretty funny though, and the class periods are mandatory, but fairly interesting. Good luck getting an A though. Tests (only 2) are pretty hard, and he grades papers hard too.
TAKE THIS MAN'S CLASS. Don't expect an A - the two exams aren't easy, and he grades papers hard - but do expect to have your views on literature classes completely changed. McKelly makes the material /relevant/! He does try a little too hard to be funny, but I can't fault him for that. Great class.
Mr. McKelly is an excellent professor. Read the books, show up to class, and take good notes. He draws parallels with what's being read to the present, which makes it easier to understand. He will sometimes reward the class if it's evident everyone is making an effort. Don't show up ready to hate it, but ready to think, and you will enjoy yourself.
Such a sincere and nice guy. One of my favorite teachers. I'm terrible at English, so I got a C in his class. But he is the only teacher I could imagine that could give me a C and I still would take his class again if I could. Read the books religiously and focus on the details. You will look forward to his class
McKelly's documentary class is the most stimulating course I've taken at Auburn. As a professor he is tough-- but he is warm, helpful, energetic and fun. I've never met a person so well-spoken and passionate about teaching.
Worst teacher ever! There are only 4 grades, all worth the same amount:participation, 1 paper, 1 final exam, 1 midterm. Attendance is mandatory, there are daily quizzes, and the tests are really hard. You basically have to memorize what he said, or else you're wrong. He has been my least favorite teacher in my 2 years at Auburn.
While at first this class seems interesting, it is not. There are only 4 grades and they are all arbitrary based on if you talk multiple times daily and if you basically memorize every passage in the works. Most difficult class I have ever taken and not worth it at all.
Dr. McKelly has high expectations. I loved coming to class, watching the films, and studying with my classmates for the exams. For the final project, you can write a long paper, create an audio documentary, or a video documentary. I became a better communicator and listener through this class-- one of my favorites at Auburn.
Avoid at all costs. The most difficult class I have ever taken, and it is definitely not worth it. He is egotistical and has arbitrary rules. The word "arbitrary" perfectly describes everything about this class. Assigns homework Sunday night, tests are absolutely ridiculous, there are 4 grades- 2 tests, 1 paper and participation. Don't do it!
His syllabus is daunting but he doesn't follow it. "Weekly" discussion posts rarely occur. I missed class 3 times and still got an A. Final paper is long but he grades it easy. Never read a word of any of the books, he tells you exactly what passages he'll test you on in lectures. Tests are difficult and make hand hurt, but not impossible. Nice guy
Don't expect to make an A if you aren't an English major. You won't have time to study for your other classes and his, since tests are 17 random quotes or phrases that you have to read the book twice to have a chance at knowing. For quizzes sparknotes is your friend. Also be prepared for lots of conservative-bashing, he has strong political views.
McKelly is awesome. He's not only crazy intelligent, but also passionate about literature. He is great to talk to and truly cares about students as individuals.
Literature is an art form, and the beautiful thing about art is that it is always open for interpretation. All interpretations were force-fed to us through lecture, and only his interpretations were "correct". The closed-minded attitude of Mckelly was very offputting and has discouraged me from taking any more literature courses at Auburn.
McKelly has an understanding of literature that is unbelievable. His lectures are entertaining and very interactive. Tests are difficult but he always scales. You have to do the reading to be successful, and making an A is very difficult, but possible. Would highly recommend if you are interested in literature.
McKelly cares about all his students. His tests are difficult. Be prepared to write quickly and you'll be fine. Go to class and take good notes. Read all the books, he gives daily quizzes. He is a really cool guy and will help you if you ask him. I'm not into english at all and i got an a in his class.
I was dreading taking this class, but Dr. Mckelly was wonderful. The lectures were interesting, but be prepared to write everything down. Participation is huge. Stay on top of the reading and you will do fine on the quizzes. To study for his exams I just looked through my notes and the portions I highlighted in my book(s).
McKelly is a great professor and definitely knows what he's talking about. There are only 5 grades in the class, two of which are papers, but if he likes your class he will make things a lot easier (like throwing out a paper). He teaches very well, but if you have never taken an upper level lit class before it could be over your head.
GO TO CLASS. if you go, you will easily have the answers to all of the answers on the midterm and the final. he has 24 canvas quizzes and those are the hardest part to keep up with. you gotta remember to keep up with those. participate in class (its actually super easy). easy A or B if you do all of this
Horrible professor. Just throws random quotes on the midterm and final and expects you to know them. Very hard final. Very annoying class. Attendance is mandatory.
Dr. McKelly is a fantastic professor. While his class is NOT easy, he is a very fair grader. His lectures are also exciting and the class is participation-heavy. I will say he has a STRICT attendance policy, but missing his lectures isn't a good idea either. Write down EVERY quote from the text that he points out-it will be on the final.
McKelly is my favorite teacher at Auburn. If you are passionate about literature, his class is an absolute must. The negative reviews, I would imagine, largely come from those that don't do the reading. Yes, you have to do the reading to pass, and the class isn't easy. Don't let this deter you. McKelly will change how you read, English major or not
Dr. McKelly is brilliant and understands literature beyond my comprehension. Such a nice professor, too. However, this was my first upper-level lit class, so everything went over my head. Plus, William Faulkner was not my favorite author, so that made the class pretty unbearable. 2 exams, 1 paper (12 pages), and participation is all he grades. Hard
Wonderful lectures, very difficult tests, be sure to highlight the quotes he goes over in class
McKelly's lectures are never dull, which is good, because you have to pay EXTREMELY close attention to all details. Midterm and Final are tough due to the time limit. He also sometimes puts random unimportant quotes on those ? Overall, great lit professor who is very passionate about his job, not an easy class but worth it in my opinion
He was the best professor I had so far. He actually teaches philosophy out of the literature that will be helpful as you live your life. His lectures are amazing and teach you a lot. His test may seem difficult when you receive it (I thought I bombed the test), but when I receive my grade it was always A (he scales it)
Dr. McKelly is a great professor. He is so passionate about what he's teaching and cares that the students get more out of it than just a grade. If you are actively listening and writing down what he says in class (I recommend typing bc he moves pretty quick), he tells you what quotes will be on his midterm/final. All in all great class/professor
Mckelly is a great teacher and a really nice guy. He is super smart and makes class interesting. His tests are difficult and are graded fairly harshly but he curves them. He is not an easy A by any means, but he is a pretty easy B. Go to class and participate and he will like you.
You have quizzes on every reading and he lectures orally in pretty much every class. He values participation very much as the entire class is almost entirely discussion. If he likes your class he might cut one of the papers you have to write. His tests are kind of hard but he'll tell, and it's true, that everything on them is something he said.
Great guy, really sweet, loves his job. His 2 tests are insane and he grades fairly harshly. Not an easy A
Mr. McKelly is a very nice guy, makes his class very structured, and you understand what he expects from you. His lectures are very interesting and keeping up is easy, but his tests are kinda hard and sometimes he can come off a little rude (once you get to know him its just his personality) He guides you through the book chapter by chapter daily.
He was very rude, and I felt as if I spoke up in class he would tell me I was wrong. I would never recommend his class to anyone. The class was not overall hard, but he made all the information unbearable. His midterm and final were hard, and it was hard to complete them in the time limit. Participation is mandatory to get a good grade.
Dr. McKelly takes participation VERY seriously. This does not mean just attendance but also very profound in class responses multiple times a class. Participation is worth 20%-25% and good luck being able to get a word in, honors students are very competitive and class discussion is usually ruled by 3-4 people leaving the rest with Cs...
Dr. McKelly really, really cares about his classes and the students. With that being said, his tests are difficult and his expectations are high. Only one unexcused absence is his attendance policy so that is also something to keep in mind. He is a nice guy but his class can be tough. I took him for a Faulkner class, having never read Faulkner.
If you don't want to talk in class, don't take him. Participation weighted heavily and attendance isn't enough. You really need to know the material well in order to speak up in class and do well on the test. Take him honors if you can, because my class participated a lot he got rid of an essay and part of the final; incredibly smart man!
Dr. McKelly is my favorite Lit prof at Auburn! Be prepared to read a lot and get off track in class, but he really wants his students to succeed. Learn the way he grades, talk in class often, and you will thrive!
He is a great professor. You need to participate and care, but he cares about you as well. If the class put in the work, then he didn't make us do more than we had to. He has clear expectations, but is fair. I definitely enjoyed this class.
Dr. McKelly is a great professor. He's adjusted very well to being online this semester and is very flexible and understanding with his students. He uses participation, two papers, a midterm, and a final for grading. He gives a lot of very good, constructive feedback and is very good about acknowledging and rewarding good work from his students.
Took this as an online class and it was great. Definitely not the best online option if you're not a reader, but very straightforward if you are. Dr. McKelly was very in-depth with the syllabus, so you know what you're getting into, but very quick to respond to any questions. He was beyond considerate of our time and made lots of kind adjustments.
Mr. McKelly is a great guy who really cares about his students' wellbeing. He is extremely smart and loves hearing his students contributions and ideas. That being said, participation matters and you need to actually read the books. It is hard to skate by, but if you put in the effort, he will notice and help you out.
Okay so literature classes are not my thing but this class was amazing. Might I even say somewhat therapeutic. I had read the Odyssey before coming to this class and absolutely hated it. However, getting into the analysis of the story in this course was super fun! Highly, highly recommend this course if you have a required Lit credit!
Really good lit professor, if you can take his honors class do it! He did daily reading quizzes but as long as you get above a 60% average overall it doesn't negatively affect your grade. he was funny, interesting and rewards good class behavior. For example, we did so good on something he made the paper optional. Class felt like therapy at times.
listen, I really like McKelly as a person and his lectures are interesting, but this man grades papers HARD. The only grades you get are a midterm, final, & 2 papers. Also, you have a one minute timed quiz every other day from the assigned reading. The midterm/ final are timed as well. I study alot & still ended with a B.
Dr. McKelly was one of the best English professors I've ever had. His midterm and final exams can be a little rough, but study every quote discussed in class and you'll do fine. He grades papers hard, but he's fair. Make sure your ideas are concise and you use correct sentence structure. Go to class every day, read the books, and you'll get an A.
Don't take this class unless literature is your passion. There are difficult reading quizzes every day and the tests are really difficult and slightly unfair. Attendance is extremely mandatory and the whole class is just him lecturing. However, he is very kind and cares about his students learning, and he is willing to give grace if needed.
Professor McKelly is by far my favorite professor at Auburn!! His class is tough but if you are consistent with reading and talking in class, it is really easy to understand all the material. He made an essay for us optional, dropped the essay on the final, and extended our only essay to the last day of school. Loved him!!!
Dr. McKelly is an amazing professor that goes above and beyond for his students if you put in the effort in class. Very class discussion heavy. The midterm/final are pretty straightforward. They require a deep understanding of the texts, however, he made our first paper optional, cancelled last week of class, and much more. Definitely recommend.
If I could go back in time, I would have never even thought about taking this class. I honestly can't say that I learned anything here, your entire grade is 1 minute 5 question quizzes, an extremely unfair midterm/final, and a vague essay. In class we have discussions where he says some of the most bizarre things I've ever heard. Just don't take it
Dr. McKelly is probably my favorite professor I've had that isn't in my major. I was worried about the difficulty of the class at the beginning, but it was not hard. His exams are not too difficult if you read the books and write notes in class. The books and lectures/discussions are interesting and actually make you want to go to class.
He is an amazing professor that facilitates really fascinating discussions about the readings. However, there are biweekly reading quizzes with 5 qs and 60 sec time limit. The first part of the exams I think were about 17 questions in 5 minutes. His class is tough, but, imo, it's worth it to have him. He clearly loves what he's teaching.
I moved heaven and earth to take his class because I saw 'discussion heavy' on RMP, but really, he just rambles about the holocaust and then wants everyone to regurgitate his opinion. I wrote ONE, 2-page paper the entire semester, which disappointed me as an English major who wants to get better at writing. Quizzes are not hard at all. Just read.
The class is worth taking, and is not too much work. You will consistently take quizzes every time you are supposed to read. They are incredibly short. Easy if you've read. The class is largely discussion based. The main issue with the professor is that they will frequently go down tangents and expects very particular answers from the students.
I took this class because of the ratings, and I wish I hadn't. It's very difficult. Lectures are insightful, but we often didn't cover material that ended up being on the exam. The exam itself is kind of a toss-up, and it's really hard to prepare for. This was the only time I've ever gotten below an A in an English class, and I worked really hard.
I really really really thought I was going to love Dr. McKelly. He only wants one thing from his students- for you to affirm his opinion. The term "daily lecture" is a facade that actually means him soap-boxing for 10 minutes past the allotted class time. He cares about his students as people, but he loves his own opinion a little too much.
Dr. McKelley is a nice man, but his class is not easy. Exams are so hard, part one is 4 mins for 17 questions, part two same 17 questions but with more in-depth answers. Answer choices usually differ by one word, so very detailed oriented. Not many papers. Tends to ramble a lot. If you are not an English major, I would not take this class.
Very difficult. I paid attention in class and took detailed notes, but didn't make an A overall in the class due to the papers and exams. I spent hours on both papers and still did not receive an A on either one. The exams are set up in a way that makes it very challenging to do well. Would not recommend if wanting an easy lit class.
Grade is based only on 4-5 grades, even though there are reading quizzes every other day for homework. Attendance is MANDATORY, but you MUST participate too. Don't expect good feedback on your essays, he slaps a random grade on there without valid reasoning. Only 2 tests but they SUCK- time limit of 14 sec/? + 2nd part= his opinions. lecture=rants.
talkative and engaging professor. Classes always discussion based on our books. Grade very heavily participation based. Other than that, there is a midterm, two papers, a final, and short QUICK reading quizzes. He makes the online quizzes FAST so that sucks but doable. 1st paper was graded easy for me, 2nd there was no clear reasoning for grade.
Homework-wise just do the reading and quizzes but don't spend too much time on them. Most of the info for tests is in discussion posts, not in class. Classes (at least for the honors section) are very discussion-heavy, but fun. McKelly can get off topic but he definitely encourages students to think and come to their own conclusions.
Class is so difficult and for what? You won't do good if you don't write down every single word he says. Time limit on exams is crazy. I had to walk to his class from the other side of campus and would be 1-2 min late, and he picked on me for it. Lots of reading but that is a given. Only take if you really enjoy english classes.
There is a participation grade that is 25% of your grade that he is very tough on. If you want an A for that you need to speak at least once every class period. He is good at analyzing texts and leads interesting discussions. The quizzes are 5 questions in 1 minute, which is tough. Exams are a similar pace. We only wrote one essay.
Dr. McKelly is a great lecturer, but he's a bit picky with things like people leaving when he goes over time. I learned a lot in the class, but you need to be present and active every day to have any hope of doing well on the tests, which have very limited time.
This class is my favorite course so far at AU. The prof. is amazing a caring guy. He wants you to do well but will not hand you a grade. If you try he will work with you. Tests are timed and don't give a lot of room for error but he is very willing to work with disabilities such as dyslexia. I cannot recommend him enough!
Will not work with you at all and pulls grades out of thin air. Very condescending. Exams are 17 questions in 4 minutes and then the same 17 questions, with the answers being paragraphs. The answers vary by one word, so tests are impossible. Will go over time every class and get mad if you try to leave before he stops ranting. Worst professor.
McKelly is a great teacher and I reccomend him but a warning: The reading quizzes are 5 questions in 1 minute (yes 1 minute) and the Midterm/Final are Pt. 1 - 17 questions in 4 minutes. Pt. 2 - 17 questions in 51 minutes. It's the weirdest layout for exams I've seen. But if you participate and read the book sections before class you will be fine.
Professor McKelly really did care about how you did in his class, when you showed him that the course was important to you. very discussion based class, so participation was super important. reading heavy, had to go through multiple chapters in between classes, and taking reading quizzes on everyday there werent classes. the course is manageable.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am a 4.0 student and I do not struggle in school whatsoever, but I did terribly on his exams. The exam material is not mentioned i books/ lectures at all. Crazy time limit, typically around 17 seconds to answer each question in any quiz or exam that we take. Please don't take this class it is so unnecessarily hard.
Unless you're an overachieving English major, you should not take this class. You're only graded on 4 things (25% each), so there is no room for error. I had never struggled in a literature class until I took this one.
Professor McKelly is a very sweet man who cares about his students. Attendance is mandatory and missing more than two classes with unexcused absences will drop your grade. However, I had some extenuating circumstances this semester and he did let me miss. His tests are hard. You really have to know what the material is and pay attention in class.
If you take this professor you will be extremely lucky to end with a c. His tests are almost impossible, literally any other teacher teaching this section of english is a better option. Ive talked to tons of people outside of my class and they say theirs is pretty easy. Yet everyone in my class is miserable.
Do not take his ENGL 2200 class. The quizzes and tests are timed unfairly, the HW which is 3 times a week is difficult but counts practically nothing for your grade. He's also extremely progressive and imbues his own ideologies into every work of literature we lead. You will waste your time, you will not enjoy it, and you will learn nothing.
The timed exams are the worst part of this class. There has been several occasions where students speak about this and he simply does not care. We get 4 min for a 17 question exam. If you have the option, don't take this class. The daily quizzes do nothing for your grade and you get 1 min for 5 questions.
McKelly simply does not care about your grade. If you are not an english major good luck getting anything above a B. Even if you go to every class and participate minimally you will receive a 70 for participation. His test averages for my class were all under a 50 which do get curved but not by a lot. There is no way to get an A.
Dr. McKelly is a brilliant professor who truly cares about his students. The course is somewhat difficult and surprisingly exam heavy for a literature class. 60% of my grade was based off of three exams and the remaining 40% consisted of weekly quizzes and participation, all of the papers were optional. Would recommend taking him!
He definitely cares for his students and is passionate about the works. There are 1 minute, 5 question homework quizzes before each class, but the answers are extremely easy (person, place, and important events). The exams are a little harder, but if you take notes during lectures, you will know exactly what is on them. Be sure to talk in class!
Never in my life have I taken a class this hard. He does not care about his students and is incredibly condescending. He wants to see you fail.
Professor McKelly shows blatant favoritism and disrespect, is unwilling to help those actually struggling in his class, infrequently answers emails, and refuses to make himself available outside of class when you ask. His unclear grading criteria and condescending behavior made this class unbearable.
Please don't take this class if you don't have to. It's unnecessarily difficult and it will hurt your GPA big time if you're not passionate about literature or don't have the time to dedicate all of your time to studying the readings
Absolutely terrible. I missed classes due to mental health problems and for a death in family, and not only did he call me out in front of the class, but said, and I quote from an email he sent my advisor, "I also believe that it's important to hold students responsible to the choices they've made." I'm sorry but I can't help I am depressed.
He is a fine person, but as a professor, he is truly awful. His exams are literally impossible (part 1 = 4 mins for 17 questions) and your whole grade is essentially based on those exams. Participation is super important but he will randomly mark you down if you don't talk 3 times per class. I got a 5 in AP Lit, and this was the hardest class ever.
Tests had insane parameters, and the 2nd highest participation grade is a 73. Can't not bring up the Holocaust to save his life, saying how “Christians” (Nazis) did it. Imbues too much personally ideology into lecture, which always goes over on time. Test question answer choices are a paragraph long w/ only a few words distinguishing each.
Dr McKelly's grading system makes no sense. He gives participation grades depending on who he likes the best. I know this because he in no way tracks how often people speak and doesn't even remember everyone's name. He is pompous and a lousy excuse for a teacher. He has fallen behind in quality with age. His sexual references are very creepy too.
Loved this class!! Don't take it if you don't like to read. Grade is determined by tests, weekly homework quizzes, and participation. You have to talk a lot in class to get a good grade, but if you're actually reading the books, it shouldn't be hard. Attendance is mandatory. No writing, all papers are optional. One of my favorite English classes.
Please don't take this class. I have always gotten A's in English, but this class was unnecessarily difficult. I have never struggled in an English class like I did in this one.
Dr. McKelly's a strange guy. His literary takes were very bizarre and unpredictable and he was quick to condescend. He definitely picked favorites and I was fortunate to end up there, but if you don't like reading/English isn't your strong suit, stay away. Decent guy but not a great professor. Made me roll my eyes more times than I can count.
Banger professor, icon. Idk how well he would do in a large lecture setting, but absolutely take him in a smaller setting if you can. He thrives on conversation so make sure to participate a lot and appreciate his appreciation for the literature. He's hard, but fair. Take it seriously.
This class was difficult, but I loved it. Dr. Mckelly clearly cares about the material and his students. You get very little time for quizzes (1 minute for 5 questions), and the tests are super hard, but he curves the tests quite a bit. It was interesting and I enjoyed the insight I gained from this class. Participation is essential!
Dr.Mckelly is a very sweet and understanding professor. He truly cares about student's understanding of the material. Class participation and attendance is madatory. There are usually 3 weekly quizzes on the reading. quizzes are 5 questions and you get 60 seconds. exams are impossible. he made adjustments to the final to ease our stress.
McKelly is an amazing professor whose lectures challenge students and give thoughtful insights. Participation is required. The content is valuable, but the grading is tough. Much time is needed for reading, taking notes, and studying. Quizzes and exams have time limits that add complexity. This class is meant for people who love literature.
RUN. I reread the Odyssey for his class in order to do better in the class. That was until he gave us 5 question quizzes 2-3 times a week that were only 60 seconds. YOU CANT EVEN READ THE QUESTIONS IN 60 SECONDS. He pulled the most insane questions from the book over the smallest thing after making you read SO much for homework. Everyone failed.
