Excellent teacher and makes the class laugh all the time, because he's very funny. Students will enjoy his class.
Great class, easy exams but you have to go to class!
He is my advisor, so I am proud to say that he made my learning experience interesting although the only pain and suffering in his class was the reading, and watching of "one flew over the cukoos nest." I am still trying to figure out WHY? I will recommend him to other students, he is the a good teacher.
Dr. Metcalf thinks he is such an individual thinker, that he pushes the boundaries set by society. In reality, he is a goober. His class is so easy I would have had to have been on life support and in a coma to have received anything less than an A. Just go to class and act interested and you'll be fine.
easy teacher dont hve to do much in his class besides attending it and acting interested, laughing when even its not funny and do wat he asks... in the end EASY A
I think Dr. Metcalf actually teaches excellent! He IS NOT a goober, his talks are thought provoking and are what college shoudl be about. It's NOT just mindless memorizing for stuff you won't use. Instead, he invokes a thought process that is quite interesting.
This prof had me laughing so hard I had tears coming out of my eyes, but that was when he wasn't trying to be funny. He actually does puppet shows with his bare hands to illustrate points: very entertaining!
Metcalf is an awesome teacher he is fun & entertaining to keep people interested, but he also actually teaches. His tests were fairly easy,& all we had were some "talk to your peers" inclass assignments. he really encourages free speech and to think outside the box.he had us read Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde to analyze good and evil in ourselves. gr8 guy
GR8 Teacher..never had any real assignments besides a few ungraded paragraphs. Encouraged class discussion. Very easy class but takes points off for absence
Great professor! Easy class, I got an A+ with lil effort! Is strict on attendance, takes pts off when ur absent. Promotes class discussions. His lectures are thought based. Had a homework assignment on the reading after every class, but it wasnt bad. Gave 2 exams but counted the best one as the final grade. Class was boring, just do ur hw n wo
I looked forward to going to this class every day. He is very funny, very bright, and very understanding. He is a wonderful teacher that gets you to think. Metcalf was the best professor I've ever had!
A very interesting and nice prof. but really not a good professor for Physiology & anatomy! His classes are full of jokes that are not funny to all. He makes you think that ur attendance $ hw will count towards ur final grade but it's only ur midterm and final exams that will count. He has deadlines for hw but never reads or grade any of them.
ok.The truth is, you only need to attend class and laugh at the teacher's (lame)jokes and you'll get a B or even A.This class is more like Sociology, nothing like Micro. The only thing this teacher cares is that u attend class,if you're sleeping, eating, reading,or txtng,he doesn't care.Easy A. You pay for a class and learn nothing.Waste of time and $
class was diff from the usual norm & thought-provoking.no need to memorize useless things.emphasized discussions instead of memorization, plenty of cheaters at this univ, esp. in Biochem & micro and this prof. loathes cheating just to let u kno. one of my fav prof, his talks were interesting, except about who was in what movie. take his classes!
great professor will work with you if you have any trouble and has no problem giving you extra help if you need it. not a hard class but a great teacher who keeps in fun and interesting. just go to class and your fine
AWESOME AND EASY EASY EASY...i got a 100 percent in his class. Just make sure you go to class.
I've had Professor Metcalf twice and love him! His lectures are thought provoking and full of discussion. You'll learn way more with him than taking a boring lecture. Make sure to go to class, he takes attendance. Also, midterm and final exams are basically your only grade BUT he gives you the ANSWERS in advance to study from. He is the best =)
Dr. Metcalf is a great "silly old grandpa" type of guy. However, he spends around 10-20 mins on taking attendance. The rest of class is spent on a few mins of the "reading" (rarely) then some English writing assignments that aren't even turned in. He e-mails the questions & answers on the 2 exams before the exams. Don't buy the books.
Very funny guy. He makes the learning experience fun. He keeps the class engaged well.
Awesome professor. If you do not take a class with him before you graduate you are missing out. Attendance is a MUST! He deducts major points for absences. He keeps class entertaining and is more than willing to help anyone who needs it. Take a class with him!
Great! AWESOME is all can/need to say!! I always came out of that class happy. Just make sure you go to class since mandatory
If this is your major and you truly want to take something out of this class, DON'T take him. Spends ridiculous amounts of time making "jokes" and taking assistance. What a waste of my tuition money. Friendly person; useless class.
Awesome class! Amazing professor! Nothing more needs to be said! I would def take his class again if I could!!
Easy class but you will not learn anything at all. A big waste of money. Do not take it unless you need to boost your GPA.
I was disappointed in this class, because I didn't learn anything from it. The instructor is very sweet and easy going-too easy going because everyone in the class just talks right through his class and he doesn't stop them. Attendance is mandatory, he deducts points if you are not there. Exams are confusing and not based on his lectures.
Loved Dr. Metcalf! He is extremely knowledgeable, and keeps class interesting. He does waste time taking attendance, but being in class will help your grade. He is MORE than fair offering opportunities to improve your grade. He does have a difficult time with classroom management, probably because he is too nice. Would highly recommend!
I'm gonna miss this crazy professor, and by crazy I mean in a good way (funny and has wacky comments). Class itself is so fun and very easy as well, just make sure you go to class since attendance is important.
Metcalf is funny and a lil crazy. Attendance is mandatory. The only other grades are the midterm and final. Beware though, exams aren't as easy as you would think. Use this class time to get other work done.
Took this class in summer and it was sooo easy. You can sleep in class but you have to go to class. He just makes jokes all the time and gives study guides with all the Qs and As on it that will come in the exam. The only nonsense part was reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. No idea why we did. Just an easy upper level credit if you need it!
Dr. Metcalf is a great man, truly amiable and easy to get along with. That being said, I didn't learn much of anything in this class. That could be the nature of the class, however, & not due to Dr. M himself. Also he gave us the answers to tests ahead of time, and while some students may like being spoon-fed an A, I did find it a little insulting.
Really nice man with a huge heart. His class is not hard. attendance is part of your grade but you really just go to class and listen. mid-term and final with extremely helpful study guide
Such a sweet old man. Spends 10 minutes calling role which is mandatory. And then the rest of the time he talks about his life and how health issues over the years have changed. He is a very wise man and provides really good study guides for the mid term and final. Attendance is mandatory!
Dr. Metcalf is such a sweetheart. I wish there were more people like him who brightens your day. Tests were easy attendance mandatory book not required. I took him for my other GCH class. I would refer to him as Metgrandpappy. Truly a nice professor who wants you to think outside the box and challenges you, at the same time respects your opinion
nice professor ever.he has positive attitude for all opinions. easy A class, but you have to attend class. attendance is mandatory.
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY FOR HIS CLASS. you will loser points if you don't do. he's a good professor, not opinionated. you really don't have to read the books for his two classes (GCH 332 & 350), i took both classes at the same time and they were pretty OK. a lot of students post up his study info on quizlet. HE GIVES YOU STUDY GUIDES FOR THE EXAM!!
ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSOR TAKE HIM. Very friendly, easy, and nice teacher. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN
Terrible. No matter your reason, even for extreme illness or hospitalization, if you miss work or class you loose points. Nice guy, but nothing in class is on the exam. Exams are a lot harder than expected. Disappointed in the lack of teaching. Didn't learn anything, unless you memorized the book. Not a great teacher, crazy, passionate,OPINIONATED
Let me just start by saying that Metcalf is a genuinely nice guy. However, the class is TERRIBLE. It is based simply on his opinion and NOTHING taught in class is on the exams. But the kicker is that attendance is mandatory! The only grades are the midterm and final & he provides a study guide for both. The class itself is easy but pointless.
People think Dr. Metcalf talks a lot about non specific course material when really if you pay attention in class and TAKE NOTES you'll be able to fill out the study guide he provides for exams. He's a genuinely nice person and wants his students to experience life and have an opinion.
Mr. Metcalf is a very sweet person however, NOTHING he teaches has anything to do with the class. I am taking health education with him and he teaches everything but that. The class is ran more like a debate class, biomedical ethics, or English class. I feel like I have completely wasted my money! Just go to class and you'll pass.
Almost too easy.
I had Metcalf for GCH 332 as well and let me tell you - I can't wait to NEVER TAKE HIM AGAIN. He takes attendance for 20 minutes and then lectures (aka intentionally spews blasphemy to incite debate) about basically nothing for an hour. No homework but that means the only grades are attendance, the midterm, & the final, so it's easy to mess up.
The only thing I learned in class were my other classmates names since he spends half of class calling role. He is extremely nice and means well, but I do not feel like I got a lot out of this class. Make sure to attend he only gives you three freebies then STRIKE YOUR OUT!
Very funny, yet confusing teacher. Don't really know what he's talking about but the material is easy to understand. Weekly modules online can take a little while, but they are easy points. Midterm and final are online (open book) and each worth just as much as the homework assignments. Overall, easy A & cool teacher!
Dr. Metcalf means well, but seriously, class is a waste of time. Almost 30 minutes are wasted on attendance alone, and then the rest of class he just reads the power points. Easy A for sure, just go to class, bring your homeworkcomputer and do his hw in class.
Not helpful at all. I had a problem with an exam and he acted like it was not his problem and showed no care. HORRIBLE.
Professor Metcalf is a very easy professor. You will probably not learn anything in his class. He is very nice and funny. Did online modules and online quizzes. Tests online. Take the class if you want an easy A. Don't take it if you want to learn somthing.
Class was very easy. Show up & get an A. He posts Blackboard quizzes every week & takes attendance. Didn't enjoy the class because he told us his opinion, would ask for individual opinions, and then interrupt and cut you off. It's not Health Education. It's Bioethics & his opinion. I brought my laptop & did other homework in that class honestly.
I took his 350 and 332 class and they were both very easy classes. He's a very sweet, classy guy, but sometimes I don't see the point of some of the things he is teaching, and a lot of people were not paying attention or were doing other hw. He used the book for both classes and are needed. Quizzes and attendance counted the most. I recommend!
Lectures are SUPER boring, but the material is SO easy and he makes class sort of fun with his personal tangents. He's a little crazy but it's easy to zone out or do something else on your computer while he's lecturing. Can miss up to two weeks of class w/o losing points. Online assignments and easy and make up almost all of your grade.
A kinda silly old man with very boring lectures. Spends a long time taking attendance. You really don't need to pay attention in class, but you should show up for participation. All grades are super easy online assignments and he gives you an opportunity to do one over at the end of the semester. Easy class, take him!
Metcalf is adorable and has many stories that tie back into health in the most unexpected ways. He's a little odd, but he's very sweet and cares about his students. The class is extremely easy, just show up and do the online homework. The final is online & he gives many opportunities to talk to him about grading or technical issues with the class.
Professor Metcalf is a really great professor! He is very understanding and actually cares about his students. He connects everything that we learn in class to the real world in a weird and entertaining way.
If you can take Metcalfe, DO IT! He actually cares about his students and lectures and is the nicest man ever. AND this is about the easiest class ever. all the homework + tests are online open book. Go to class and you will get an A
All homework and quiz are through Learnsmart online. You get to miss class 6x. You show up to his class for attendance. He has a funny personality. You can get his homework done within 30min of him opening it. This class can be manageable with 4 other classes. Final is online. Awesome professor.
Professor Metcalf has a hilarious personality that makes lectures enjoyable. All quizzes and exams are online and he is willing to help out with any questions. He likes getting to know each student like their cultures and their names. I would highly suggest taking his class, it is manageable with 4 other classes. He responds to emails quickly.
Probably the easiest class you will take for GCH majors. Very little effort to get an A. All homework/exams are online and are open note and open book. Attendance is required and is part of your grade.
he is the best professor you would experience at GMU. homeworks, exams are all online. attendance is a must. come to class, do your works and you will get an A.
Taking NURS 436 was the best experience of my life. Prof Metcalf is an amazingly insightful man to aspire to. HOWEVER... His sailing school is the real course to take! Ask him about GSS! ONE MORE TIME! OOOH! Sailing school is over and we are going home. Goodbye! Goodbye! We are going home!
I took Professor Metcalf for GCH 360 and GCH 332 and I loved both of these classes with him! He does take attendance before every class so make sure to show up because attendance counts towards your final grade. He's very sweet and very funny and makes lectures interesting to listen to! 10/10 would definitely recommend!
He's a jolly guy who's really easy going, tries to be funny and laughs at himself a lot, and cares about all his students. All quizzes and homework are online and pretty easy. You can miss up to 2 weeks of class (6x for MWF, and 4x for TR classes) before points are deducted. Most of the info learned in class is common knowledge.
He is really funny and nice. Attendance is mandatory but you really dont have to pay attention to the lecture. The class was an easy A.
Frankly, this class should be online. Every assignment is online anyway and you really just have to show up to class for the attendance. Professor Metcalf is very sweet and often randomly starts talking about things that have nothing to do with the class itself. Easy A
Very sweet and nice. Really tries to make lectures interesting. The material is easy and all you have to do is assignments online. Attendance is for a grade, so you have to show up, besides that easy A.
You're basically getting the benefit of a chill online course w/out having to pay the online fee. Since u only come to class for attendance, I would sign up for his section if it's taking place on days that I have other classes on campus. All assignments are online and easy A's. Had a great final semester at GMU thanks to him! Cheers to Metcalf!
Dr. Metcalf is probably the easiest professor I have ever taken. Not much is done in class because he gets really excited during roll call. Basically, all you will do for this class is show up and then complete the online assignments and tests, which are not too hard.
I LOVE DR. METCALF! He is an amazing person with a hilarious personality. His classes are a breeze if you do the work and show up. Attendance points are heavy, but if you don't get them you'll still pass. All he wants is for you to pay attention and listen to his funny stories. Don't leave in the middle of lecture or you'll hurt his feelings :(
Do all SmartBooks and quizzes because they make up all of your grades. Only 4 excused absences so attendance counts (he calls you by last name right when class starts) SUPER nice and SUPER kind-hearted! Please participate and don't leave him hanging like some of us do. He's loud and intellectually stimulating. Textbook/required material $80.
In lecture he is a very kind rambling old man, but through email he corresponds in a very rude and blunt manner, which is off putting to say the least. But the class is a easy A. All of the online homework assignments are manageable. There's no midterm and the final is easy. If you want to actually "learn" material maybe don't take it with him.
I had him for both GCH 332 and GCH 360 in the same semester and it was so easy! Show up to class for attendance for participation points but his lecture is pointless. Quizzes/final exam are at home, online and open note. For 332, there's also learnsmart assignments but is graded for completion. You won't regret taking him!!!!
Dr. Metcalf is known amongst my peers to be a very easy and lenient professor. He often made some off-color and possibly offensive jokes which I didn't like but I could tell he was just trying to keep the class awake. I didn't really learn much in this class and it was an easy A. He's a very nice person but don't expect to be challenged.
Very easy class overall if you just do the work. You are basically graded on completion of assignments, so make sure they are completed on time (they take a lot of time so work ahead). I just didn't like the lectures b/c they were awfully long and did not match the online assignments.
Dr. Metcalf was super nice and caring. We had optional zoom classes twice a week. Your only graded on the weekly workbooks and quizzes/test. The workbook is an easy A cause it's graded on completion but some can take more than 2 hours to complete so make sure you get started early. Quizzes & test are open note and not that hard. Take Him!!
Because of the pandemic we had lectures via zoom which where quick and to the point. Keep in mind the deadlines for the quizzes and you will be fine. Very kind and understanding. Will take him again.
Dr. Metcalf is a very sweet and kind old man very understanding too. We had optional/recorded meetings via Zoom (short by the way). Just keep yourself on track with the quizzes and modules. My best advise is to do the review because those are extra points on your overall grade & helpful for the exams. He's class is easy & to the point !!!
He is caring and really a great professor. All quizzes were open book so you did need to buy the textbook. The final was open book too so there's no reason you should fail the class. Easy A and easy work. Take him if you can!!!!
Dr. Metcalf is a nice guy but not the best if you want to learn the material.
I love this professor! basically everything is open book. each week you have a quiz and HW on a website you have much time as you need to finish. Exams are same and open notes. Just by doing the HW even wrong you get full points and that's 50%. No reason to not get an A because everything is open and there for you. Plus its a 300 level class!!
hands down best professor ever. Attendance is not mandatory because its ayscncrounus. everything is open book! if you do the hw even if its wrong u get full points. 3 exams open book and quizzes as well. 1 week for hw and 2 days to do quizzes and exams. he is the best so sweet and easy A. take him and pray for me ! can be concentration or elec.
Really nice professor. I only went to lectures because hes so sweet but the class isnt mandatory but I took it online. Class was easy, not much work but a lot of textbook reading but thats the only work.
I took this course as a hybrid, all of the graded work was online so attendance wasn't mandatory. His lectures were a bit weird sometimes. We often drifted away from the topic but again, you were going to review the information online again anyways so it wasn't that big of a deal. Overall he's a sweet guy and this class is an easy A.
Professor Metcalf is really nice and understanding. He is the nicest professor I have had and I wish all professors were like him. The homework's are really easy even though they are long. If you are late on things he is very understanding. Attendance isn't mandatory but I recommend everyone show up to class because he is very sweet.
Alright I'll say it... I LOVE Professor METCALF! He is a gem. If you need to take this course, take it with him. All your tests, quizzes, and assignments are through your online textbook. He is very understanding, gives great lectures that are funny and engaging. He is funny and also brilliant. Lots of forgiveness for late assignments. just awesome
Take him if you want an easy A. Your grade consists of the final and weekly quizzes which are BOTH open note. Get the textbook online for free because he makes quizzes right out of the book. You are essentially forced to learn material that way which I liked. Sometimes he opens quizzes for 2nd attempts!
It was a hybrid class and was only graded on weekly homework, weekly quizzes, and 4 exams including the final. Attendance is not mandatory. He's an easy A, the lectures weren't really lectures but more of his tangents. He's a very sweet elderly man, but if you really want to learn from this class, I would recommend you take a different professor.
Metcalf is awesome. I took hybrid which was in person once a week, & he counts attendance as extra credit. He's a very wise, sweet old man. Weekly online module + quiz which are insanely easy to complete (and interesting!). His lectures consist of him going through a PPT or watching a youtube video. Very chill. Definitely recommend for an easy A.
Super caring and funny professor, only downside is the price of the textbook but it's worth taking any GCH class with him. All exams and quizzes are open book, and he really wants you to succeed.
Great professor really easy just attend classes
Interesting. Long multiple choice modules (3-4 hours each) but answers are directly from textbook. You get 100 as long as you complete it. Must buy $100 online textbook. Would have loved this class during normal semester. Spent a lot of time on the modules but that was expected for a 4 week class. Answers emails even on weekends and is flexible.
I took GCH 332 5-week summer class and it was very Easy. You have weekly readings, chapter h.w, open note quizzes and open note exams. If you do the work there's no reason not to get an A+. I recommend him as a professor he is easy going and very respectful if you need any help.
Took this course async over the summer so it was condensed. It was a very packed schedule; 10+ quizzes in 5 weeks. Quizzes were also uploaded to BlackBoard at random times of day and assigned seemingly random due dates, which made it harder than it needed to be. Overall, the content was easy which was nice. Would take again due to how easy it was.
Professor Metcalf is a sweet old man who just wants to make life easier. Homework and assignments can take time but everything is open note. Easy A class, highly recommend taking him :)
I had him for my GCH 332 hybrid, I enjoyed his lectures, he is a funny and caring guy. The online concepts can be heavy with work, but they are not difficult to do. Exams are easy and not extra homework besides the concepts.
He is an outstanding professor. Homework and assignments can take time, but all exams and quizzes are open note, and he really wants you to succeed. (You get 100 as long as you complete them.) Easy A class, I highly recommend taking him.
Metcalf is a sweet professor who makes this class a breeze. The open-note exams and easy online modules make it an effortless A. I found Unstuck AI to be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. Definitely recommend this class!
Rambles a lot about stuff irrelevant to the class, so lectures are pretty useless. You rely solely on the book. The course is very disorganized. I felt like a detective deciphering due dates with all the conflicting information given. However, pretty much guaranteed A+ grade if you read the book, and he's very caring with "charming old man" vibes.
Homework is McGraw so it is a little time consuming, other than that the class is very easy, and the material is interesting! He responds to emails fairly quickly too. Would definitely take again!
He's the sweetest professor ever, reminds me of my grandpa. I took him for GCH 332 and GCH 300 and loved both! He's kind, understanding, and genuinely cares about his students. His classes are interesting, fair, and not stressful at all. He brings decades of experience and treats students with respect! If you get the chance, take him!
MOST sweetest professor ive had thus far, if you have him as your professor you are guaranteed an A in the course as long as you complete mcgraw ( also pushes deadlines back a lot), as far as in class he just likes to talk honestly and the class just flies by, i 100% think you should get this professor if you want to to be a smooth sailing semester
Dr Metcalf was a great professor and individual. His lectures could feel a little repetitive, but pretty informing. As long as you show up regularly and do the homework, you'll do fine.
This class was very easy and straightforward. There were weekly modules and quizzes, so as long as you did all of your work on time you would be fine. He makes everything open note and is a very sweet professor, but his in person lectures are unnecessary.
Very sweet professor.
