Not bad, im learning a lot and not doing hw, borderline A as of 2nd test. Seems good so far
The best chemistry teacher in the world. His lectures are very clear. If you listen to him, you don't even need to read the book. He is estremely helpful, kind, and very very smart. I just love him.
Doesn't finish examples. "you what to do from here" is his response. he's smart but isn't willing to explain the material at your level.
a little bit hard, but some one who cares about his students. ask him any kind of questions, he'll answer it. his exams are not hard if you try to undrestand the materials. on the other hand, complicated lecturing. jump over various subjects simultanaous
his test were the hardest test i have ever taken. he seems put super hard questions on the test. he puts stuff on the test that you have never seen in the class i suggest not to take him
Some what good and some what bad. This teacher can explain, but does not relate his lectures or problems when taking the test. The tests don;t seem to be chem 11. If you know the materials, then you'll pass, but if you don't know, I suggest that you do no
He is the best chemistry teacher at SMC. He explains lots of details and is passionate. If you like chemistry, he is the best one. Ask any questions. He will answer as best as he can.
His lectrues are as good and clear as they get. He is very kind and helpfull. Murphy is very smart, and very organized. His quizes are cery easy, but exams are a little challanging. Overall, he is a great teacher.
This teacher doesn't care for his students. His tests are hard, sometimes is not clear on examples, and is a tought grader. His final is even harder,50 questions very impacted almost all of them. He only gives good notes that is the only thing. I don't recomend this teacher,he ASSUMES you know alot.
his lectures are very clear and organized and his quizzes are easy, but his tests are way too long and difficult.
THIS TEACHER IS VERY HARD I RECOMEND THAT ANYBODY WANT TO TAKE CHEM 11 DO NOT TAKE HIM HIS TEST IS THE HARDIEST AND SO TRICKY HE PRETEND THAT U KNOW EVERYTHING TAKE MERLIC SHE IS SO EASY
WORST TEACHER EVER. His tests are stupidly difficult and are all written (plus he gives very little part marks). Even if you have the right answer if he doesn't like the wording..you get "0". Ignored students who asked questions and even embarrassed some in lab! This guy ruined my 4.0. DO NOT TAKE!
If you can take someone else do it... this professor gives tests that are really hard. THey are hard in the sense that they are not like the problems you do for homework. You would have to look a problem for a long time before you would figure out what to do with it. It's a very hard class unless he
Dr. Murphy is a very NICE, smart and friendly professor who cares about his students. He always asks if we have Q.His teaching style is somewhat complicated, and he speaks about a few things simultaneously. If you practice and follow his examples you'll do fine on his exams.Take him if you are serious
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! You will regret!!! If you are VERY lucky, you will get a B. If not, you are stuck with a stupid C. Getting a C for a 5 unit class is killer to your GPA. THINK ABOUT IT.
if you're a chem major u should definitely take his class. his explanation of fundamentals and how it relates to the real world is great, BUT if you're taking this class to fulfill a prereq,**** what da hell is this is. this is intro to chemistry!!!
Good guy, but his exams are the hardest you've ever seen! You need to study your butt off.He knows his stuff-take his class if you're a chem. major.
Murphy lectures well and you learn from his lectures. However, he can be boring at times, he grades really hard on the exams, and assumes that you know all of the material. Overall, i did not get a pleasing experience from this teacher and if you select him i'd suggest you work your ass off.
He is the worst teacher!!
This teacher is so hard, I doubt more than 2 people in class got an A. Seriously, he ruin my life (by ruining my GPA that is). I regret taking him. There are so many other better teachers!
I do not recommend this teacher. It was really hard to stay focused in his class because he is really boring, especially since he repeats himself over and over, but in different words. He is willing to help, but I did not like his teaching method at all. I had to drop the class.
worst teacher ever. not helpful and just a horrible teacher. you think you did wonderful on the tests but you dont. and grades labs too harshly.
If you like learning the material on your own, then you will be fine! He tends to teach the board and makes a lot of mistakes, so just be careful. Very boring class! I would not recommend this teacher to anyone who wants an A in Chemistry!
the worst teacher i've ever seen~I got A on the 1st and 2nd exam and got B on the last exam. the overall score was 89.7 include final and lab, finally i got B, though.
Just stay away
BORING!! There is no life in his lecture. Quizzes tend to be a pain. I would not recommend this teacher.
Forget sleeping pills! Just play a recording of one of his lectures and you'll be out in a minute. He knows that we understand but insists on giving another example, when he should actually spend more time on the newer, harder, less clear topics. Save yourself now and find another teacher!
There are better teachers!
He is a teacher who dosn't know how to teach, he's arrogant and if the class is doing bad then its a problem with the students not him. In one of the test the class average was 57% and he blamed us for not doing well, if you are considering taking him don't his test are insanly hard as if he decied to create his own weeding out system
I am writing this to save anybody the trouble of busting their butt struggling in chem 11 and hoping you'll do well in this guy's class. Lectures are incredibly boring, he's not very friendly and as far as help goes.. he is very arrogant and helps but again it seems like he doesn't want to help. Like its your fault for not understanding. Good luck
Save yourself!Tests are hard, VERY different from what he teaches on his lectures or the HW. Once I asked to help out on break, he said "sorry pal, this is my break too" and walked away.Doesn't care whatsoever. I usually get good grades, but him...i simply hate him. Do not take him, you'll regret it later.
Will help with questions but his tests are difficult and don't follow his lectures.
i know that everyone below has made it clear, but i need to get it out too. i was honestly starting to love chemistry and then..he happened. dropped it with a W weeks later and basically wasted my time and money. NO.
terible
He is very fair and explains well, but the tests can be difficult if you don't do the homework, but if you do the homework you should be fine.
no, no, no - don't do this to yourself. Horrible lectures (very boring) and tests are super hard...
He really understands this stuff and will help a lot during office hours. If you don't keep up with the homework his exams are hard. I learned a lot from him.
Yes, his tests are hard, but he is helpful to those that are willing to do the work.
Not as bad as people say he is. Very helpful during office hours. At first I was scared of this teacher cuz he was so hard, but a B is manageable in his class. If you want an A you need to work extra hard.
Most likely "Greedy" does represent him well. He is not only hard grader but also happy seeing u cut off ur grade like a hell. Not really helpful at all. Don't kill urself by taking this mercyless guy. I'm done here but u decide urs.
He was very helpful during office hours. Too many in my class expected an A without doing any homework, but if you do the hmwk and ask questions it isn't too bad. Nice guy.
He would go over the easiest material in class, then ask the hardest questions on the test. For the record, I aced the class, but still feel some of his tests were a bit over the top. If you want to succeed, do all the homework and every practice problem that he posts. He is an extremely boring lecturer.
i don't know how it is in a spring or fall semester, but it's damn near impossible to handle in a winter/summer semester. four hour classes, five days a week with him are almost too much to handle. i had to drop to avoid messing up my GPA. i wouldn't recommend taking him during winter/summer. too compact and fast.
Don't take him! He is a F***ing killer! I'mnow taking his class! In the previous quiz, the class average was 68%, and the average exam and quiz is 75%. And He will NEVER curve! Taking a 5 units course and get a C will totally destory your life! Trust me, don't take him!! Again, DON'T TAKE HIM!!
Dropped it with 'W' for winter. His lecture was boring and pretty easy but his quizes and exams were pretty hard. Take this class if your serious. Do all homeworks and practice problems he gives(but he gives no credit for those) and your do farely well i guess
Dr Murphy is a wonderful professor. Admittedly, he is the hardest general chem prof at smc. However, if you want to learn the material and have it stick, his is the class to take. If you take good notes and do the practice problems, you will do well on the exams.
I took him for both chem 11 and chem 12. Great guy, willing to help during his office hours. You do have to work hard and go through problems that he assigned if you plan on getting A's. We had about 7 A's out of 30 students or so. Take him if you are serious about learning the material.
He's hard to understand. The most improtant point is he never uses textbook, even never open it, so it's very hard to catch his points.Maybe he's from Massachusett Institute Tech. so he teaches students as Massachusett Institute Tech. students which is really contradictory and makes peolpe want to cry and crazy
HE IS WONDERFUL TEACHER, BUT HIS ATTITUDES TOWARD STUDENTS ARE INDIFEEFRENT. STILL I ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE HIM, CUZ YOU COULD READ ONLY NOTES AND DO WELL IN HIS CLASS. BE IN HIS CLASS AND DO WHATEVER YOU WANT, YOU EAT, SLEEP, WHATEVER YOU WANT. JUST CONTINUE TO WRITE DOWN NOTES. HAHA! I LOVED BEING IN HIS CLAS.. I'M TAKING HIM FOR CHEM12 AS WELL
This guy is cool. No deadline for anything!! You could turn your labs whenever you want.
Although he's helpful, he might be the hardest chem professor I've ever had.He likes expanding more so that you ABSOLUTELY DON'T KNOW what he's talking about. That's why many people in my clas drop the class.I regret now that I didn't drop the hardest person before the deadline.Take him = Drop him
He's one of the hardest teacher among the other famous hard teachers.I really don't know how to describe his ill teaching personality. He's really sick.He torture you. He makes you strongly feel that chem 11 is not what chem 11 really is. Under his torture, you DEFINITELY feel that you're studying in MIT.DO NOT TAKE HIM,PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Folks, I don't understand how people could complain about this guy, because chem 11 IS HARD. But compared to other professors, he is generous. Please, this guy is fine.
his tests were hard.. but manageble if you study REALLY REALLY HARD!!! i have to say though, his lectures were a TORTURE... soo super boring and he gets into details that you don't even need to know. i learned nothing in his class. had to read the book and learn on my own. also don't get why he would lecture before tests either.. DO NOT TAKE.. PLS!
He is a fair teacher. People who complain are those who are too lazy to do the homework. If you do the homework and understand the overall concept..you will do fine. People expect the teacher to just give out A's. That is laziness 101. what can i say
He is a fair teacher. People who complain are those who are too lazy to do the homework. If you do the homework and understand the overall concept..you will do fine. People expect the teacher to just give out A's. That is laziness 101. what can i say ....
his class is pretty hard. he is a nice person though. if you are willing to study everyday then take him because you will get an A. if you are lazy then you will probably get a F and D if you are lucky. so if you are willing to take time to study then take his class because you will learn a lot
he is a hard teacher. you need to work your but off in order to do well. his quezzes are easy but his tests arent. he is willinging to help you but you need to do the homework and understand it. i had an A until the final but got a B in the class bc i got a b on the final
He is a really nice teacher. He is a very fair grader on lab reports and quizes and tests were very fair and came straight from the homework. He drops the lowest test, quiz and lab report so you really can't complain. It's easy to get a B in the class and not that hard to get an A if you are willing to do the hw (and undertand it)and study.
Dope professor. Very kind, not a mean bone in his body. Very open to questions, no matter how dumb. I had a lot of them. A few fun labs involving fire and crazy acids. The class is not a walk in the park, but an A is definitely achievable with a little work. This guy went to MIT, he really knows chem and drops lowest lab, quiz, and test.
Very good professor. He really wants students to succeed. He is happy when he sees that students are interested in chemistry.Very kind, polite. Explains well. With him chemistry isn't hard, but he gives a lot of knowledge
Murphy is brilliant and he puts a lot of effort into being an excellent teacher. Chemistry is tough, he makes it as easy as anyone could (it's still hard). He's also a nice guy, if a little awkward and out there somewhere in chemistry land...
Doctor Muphy was one of the best persons I have ever known. In general all of the faculty of the physical science department at Santa Monica College are so cool I stand aw of their genius. Dion Olguin. Thank you for sharing your knoledge with me
Dr. Murphy is a great teacher. I took both his Chem 11 and Chem 12 class. I received an A in both classes. It's really simple to do well in his class. Do his homework and practice problems and study his notes. If you have a firm grasp on that, an A is very manageable.
He actually learns the names of his students, which not a lot of science teachers bother to do with so many students. Dr Murphy really cares about how his students are doing in the class. He explains everything really well and gives a lot of examples of things on quizzes and tests. Classes can sometimes get boring, but overall, he's a good teacher.
MURPHY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TEACHERS AT SMC. I'VE HAD A LOT OF TEACHERS WHO WEREN'T CLEAR SO I HAD TO LEARN EVERYTHING ON MY OWN BUT IT IS SO MUCH DIFFERENT WITH MURPHY. HE IS OPEN TO QUESTIONS AND IS ALSO HELPFUL DURING OFFICE HOURS. HIS NOTES ARE VERY CLEAR AND THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS HE ASSIGNS ARE VERY HELPFUL. TAKE HIM, HE IS AMAZING!
Nice guy, tests are not based on homework but more on notes/the practice problems he assigns online. They're easy if you study enough. But watch out, this guy is really harh about sig figs. There's 10 labs, 3 tests, and 5 quizzes, and 1 of each is dropped. Hes up for any type of question, don't worry about sounding stupid, he wont embarass you.
Murphy is a great teacher because unlike others, he drops the lowest test, quiz and lab, he's very approachable during office hours...very kind, and really knows his stuff! I got an A by doing all his practice problems in class (they show up on exams and quizzes!!) The book is useful for concepts but not so much for the test unless he stresses it!
Great teacher! Very friendly and approachable. He knows his stuff AND is very good at teaching. Also a fair grader. Do the practice problems he assigns in the book. The solutions manual with answers for every single textbook problem is at the bookstore. Use it to understand how to approach problems. Work hard and you can definitely get an A.
Great professor! Really cares about students and chemistry. Enthusiasm is infectious. There were many obnoxious/annoying kids in class yet Prof Murphy answered all of their stupid questions and dealt with their crap in a very professional manner. Getting an A is not hard at all if you just go to lecture and do the homework and practice problems.
Professor Murphy has exceptional teaching skills. He's also very kind. Always available during office hours and crystal clear explanations. His tests are challenging, but by no means impossible. He'll make Chem 12 an awesome experience for anyone.
Half the problems he does in class are not on the test(only hard questions on test). VERY harsh grader. No HW. 3 tests and 1 final. Labs..good luck getting 10/10-one mistake and he will wipe off 3pts(makes no sense to me)His multiple choice are 4 pts each (15 out of 40 are mc)so if u miss about 4-5 mc questions u pretty much fail the test
he is very kind, patient, and approachable. he doesn't move too quickly and goes over the same topic twice so you really understand the topic. 3 tests and 1 cumm. final. he drops a test, lab, and quiz. there are around 5 quizzes. takes off points for wrong sig figs. prelabs for every lab. overall great teacher but VERY challenging class.
To tell you the truth he is a very GOOD professor!! Not only are his notes super clear he makes the subject/material make SENSE! He's so nice and patient unlike my previous chem teachers!!His test are hard but it's chemistry people it's not supposed to be easy!!!
A really nice guy and great teacher. If you understand chem then getting a 100 percent on a test is not difficult at all. Wish I took him for Chem 11 instead of Hsieh.
good teacher. but need to have Some sorT of backroUnd in chem For Full success.
Murphy definitely taught in depth and explained the concepts very well. His tests are hard and he is a tough grader. He will take off points on tests for very small things and each question is worth a lot of points. He does drop the lowest quiz, test, and lab. I recommend him if you are planning on pursuing Chem.
Dr. Murphy is one of the best professors I've ever had. Really knows his stuff, I don't think I saw him look at paper through the entire class. He may have, but I didn't see it. A wonderful professor, moves fast. He is quite fair, and just expects his students to actually absorb the material. Hindsight says I should have attended more frequently.
do not recommend. very tough tests and not the best at explaining.
His lectures have close to nothing to do with what is going to be on the tests. When you ask him for help he gets irritated and doesn't explain clearly. If chemistry comes natural to you, take him. If not, I would suggest finding someone else. He assumes that you remember EVERYTHING from chem 10 and he refuses to review it.
He is really hard and the chem before I got B and with him I need to retake chem 11 . His does not go over the examples that are gonna be on the test. He lectures good but does not help on the exam
Professor Murphy is an amazing professor. He gives you all the resources you need to succeed in his class. Do the practice problems in the book along with the practice problems he assigns and make sure you understand what you are doing. Also if you need help ask for it, he is willing to help!
Murphy is an overall good professor. He's good at lecturing the material and he goes over some concepts multiple times. To do well, you must do the practice problems he posts. He drops your lowest test, quiz, and lab. He is extremely helpful in office hours and will answer any question you have so don't be afraid to approach him. A really nice guy.
He is amazing. I definitely recommend to those who know how to study for science classes. He is a little bit unorganized but he's fair. He cares a lot about sigfigs on lab reports. Three exams plus a final but you can drop one exam. 5 quizzes worth 25 points each, you can drop one. Plus drop one lab report. We also had long breaks during class.
I loved Dr. Murphy, but I think you have to be generally interested in chemistry to enjoy his class because he is a bit monotonic. But he is a great teacher. Learn the "practice problems" inside out, go to office hours and pay attention to problems he gives in lab and you will do fine on the exams. Labs are chill.
I was late for the first day of lecture and lab, and he remembered me forever. He teaches good calculating methods, really clear, and he gives no homework. However, he has few quizzes and exams which made you have a less chance to climb up if you fail one of them....
Please don't. He was probably the rudest teacher I had at smc. Gets irritated when you ask questions and doesn't end up answering. Sometimes doesn't even look at you and doesn't respond when you're talking to him face to face. Doesn't care about his students passing. An A isn't impossible, he just makes you hate chemistry and hate coming to class.
<3
This is not the ideal Professor who takes time to help students succeed, but rather pushes you away when needing help with questions. Adding on to his lack of help, he grades harshly but helps those he favors. It is awful to say that the majority of the class dropped as he encouraged the students to do so after handing back the tests with a smile
Horrible teacher & mean person. He is sarcastic when you ask questions, grades based on if he likes you or not, and his lectures are absolutely useless. He spends so much time talking about concepts he says we don't need to know and barely spends time on problems which are what the tests and quizzes are made up of. Definitely avoid if you can!!
Prof. Murphy is a pretty good professor; he explains everything clearly but unfortunately he spends a lot of time writing everything on the board. If you want to get an A it would be better to read ahead and start on the hw and practice exams as soon as possible. He's more than willing to help but it has to be outside of class during office hours.
Nah. You won't learn. He discourages questions by dismissing it with "read the textbook" or saying condescending statements such as "if you think about it". That type of response discourages students from actually wanting to learn. Any class you take with murphy will result in you teaching yourself the material and making things more difficult.
His grading scale is such a joke. One simple mistake on any quiz or test will start from -3 points. Three exams, four quizzes, ten lab reports, and a final exam. It is super hard to get full points on each lab report(believe me), and if you are deducted more than 53 points out of total, say goodbye to your A. Just Stay Away From This Class.
I took chem 11 with him in person and chem 12 remote. First quiz is always hardest and first exam is always easiest. Take a good look at recent years' old exams because they are very similar to his actual exams especially for free response. Lab discussions help a lot. Prioritize canvas problems before bc hw problems are usually not super helpful.
The class was remote, making it way more difficult. Professor was not very good at teaching online because all he did was write out the notes on the screen as if we were in class physically. Notes were messy, and sometimes I didn't even know which section in the chapter we were in. Didn't discuss the lab thoroughly, making the reports 10 times hard
We were moved to online but it is unacceptable when you cannot enroll for your next course because he wouldnt follow the class syllabus. I passed the class but wasn't able to enroll during enrollment due to a late update in the gradebook. He is very unclear and his tests don't necessary match the notes. Hand writing is BAAD and is impossible NOTREC
Can be a grouch but know he'd be rudely interrupted (loses his train of thought), asked repetitive ?'s, or asked unrelated ?'s. If you make it passed that then you're in for a solid Chem semester as A's and B's are doable, so long as you make some resemblance of an effort. Don't be discouraged from taking him or the dry lectures (its chemistry!).
Murphy is a grump, but DEEP inside he really is a sweet heart. I hated him at first and got a B in chem 11 but once I understood how to actually study for a chemistry class, I got an A in chem 12. Its chemistry, its not going to be easy. He gives you all the tools you need. Dont be intimidated by his rudeness. He has a special in my heart. Lol
Professor Murphy's lectures were okay and he was available for office hours for extra help, but his tests were just way too hard. He graded really strictly so I ended up withdrawing, but I feel like a lot of the students were struggling on the tests in his class.
He is disgusting professor and he check chegg report students who post questions. He is ridiculous. He does not know anything about chemistry becarefull of his grading in here because all the good comment basically he grade himself in here do not be fooled of positive comments. He does not curve imagine if you take this in class he will fail you.
Old school style professor and didnt adapt well to the online platform. Lectures by writing on the virtual whiteboard. Only 455 points at the end of the semester so every point is valuable. No partial credits on exams as it is all multiple choice. Now, its very possible to get an A, lowest exam dropped and he is very caring and want you to do well.
If you take his class, note: practice is key and you'll need a tutor. He doesn't give instruction on how to improve on labs and late work 0 pts. His exams are also MUCH harder than his quizzes, which are easy if you practice the chapter reviews in the textbook. Just note that most ppl barely pass and if you fail the final, you fail the class.
If you are considering choosing a Chemistry professor, Professor Murphy is your best choice. He loves helping students understand Chemistry knowledge and has the high-level skills to guide students to learn Chemistry deeply through his class, and is very patient in answering students' questions during his office hours. I recommend him 100% to you.
In short, it's bad. First off HORRIFIC point based grading. He will take off points like it's nobody's business from every single assignment. All MC tests are on Canvas and they're hard and each question is 5 points. NO PARTIAL CRED Practice helps somewhat, but they're not assigned, you're just told to do them. I dropped cause I was gonna get a B.
Professor James Murphy is one of the best professors I met in college. I was inspired by his teaching that came with all his heart and soul, and I gained a whole bunch of accomplishment and confidence after his courses Chemistry 11 and 12. I am at UC Berkeley to continue my academics. Please give yourself a chance to learn Chemistry deeply.
The good thing is he doesn't look down on students when they don't understand a topic, he talks like he's having a conversation. The bad thing is after his lectures, you're gonna teach yourself. Difficulty level, labs:5/10 quizzes:7/10 exams:10/10 As a human, he's not bad, but I wish he at least planned his lectures better as a professor. & no ec.
another G league roster
RIP professor Murphy. You will be missed
RIP James Murphy. A lot of people didn't like his class/lectures but if you followed the practice exams(that he provides), you will do well. I got a 95 on the 2nd exam doing this after failing the first exam( I tried studying the night before on multiple chapters$
Professor Murphy's class is challenging, but engaging if you put in the work. Use unstuck AI and the free textbook to stay on top of the material. Avoid distractions - this class demands full attention.
