just a standard teacher, don't expect anything special. Called the class stupid repeatedly. Would not recommend him.
he seems as though he forgets you're learning the subject he's teaching.he repeatedly put our class down for having bad test grades.thought i'd be able to pull up my low test scores but ended up dropping it because i couldn't stand his mean remarks.
Belittles people ,doesn't explain his equation very well act like your stupid for not knowing what he left out.
Mumbles and very unclear. Spends more time talking down to students than teaching, makes you feel stupid.
Something's wrong with this guy....
You must really have a thing for math to make it through a class with him - or just believe that if it doesn't kill you it'll make you stronger... So hard to understand, he's incredibly intelligent, but unable to relate to his students. Went from 34 to 13 students in 4 weeks - his goal was 12...
I never hated math until I took it with him. It doesn't seem like he cares about your questions. He has a thing with putting people down, though he may find it amusing. He doesn't understand the concept of leveling down with his students. Trust me, you will NOT get your money's worth.
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!
He dosent clearly explane the lesson, he zips right through it. His tests do not reflect the homework he assigns.
I just remember this guy as being smug, borderline rude, but so good at math that he couldn’t understand why people like me struggle with mathematical concepts. If math’s your thing then you probably will do okay with him. If English is your thing, take CHARLOTTE Newsom---she’s great.
PICK SOMEONE OTHER THAN HIM!
This professor merely presents the material, that is all. He discourages questions by inferring that you should already know the answer. More than half of his students dropped his class. I got a C in his precalc class but got an A in Applied Calculus the next semester with another Professor.
when the class started there was about 25 of us, now halfway through the semester the is only 7 of us and we all are struggling I had straight A's in math till this class and I'm struggling with getting a D. He doesn't have time for questions and he gives test after he starts something new so you stay clueless in class. RUN FROM THIS GUY!!!!!!
this guy is the worst, not only are his jokes lame but his teaching is horrible. my class, too started out with about 25 then dropped to about 9, and that is the honest truth!!!
Run for your life with this guy !!! Take someone else, ANYONE ELSE!!!! I pity the people that had to suffer with him the whole semester. I drop him after one night, along with about 5 others.
This guy was definetly the worse teacheer I've ever had at TCC. Im not good at math so I need a good teacher He was just horrible. Take Deroche
Not the best teacher I ever had. He is so hard to understand, he talks to himself and laughs at his own jokes. He dosent try and help you understand the work, but actually makes fun of you for asking questions...WORST MATH TEAHCER!!! so drop, add, swap do anything to get out of his class!!
He is a not really a hard teacher but you have to understand or like math a little. If you stick with the class he will go out of his way to help you if you really try and do everything he ask you will pass the class. It is a difficult class if you are not a math person like me but he did help me when i needed it. if you slack then dont take him.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!:(
self-centered and egotistical, goes very fast and expects you to understand it the first time, otherwise he puts the class down for not understanding, he expects anyone taking his class to be an A or B student and tells them so, class started with 25 or 30 and ended with 10, be prepared to do slot of studying to keep up

WORST TEACHER EVER!!! RUN FROM THIS GUY!!!
Horrible instructor, clarity is nonexistant. If you ask him questions he snaps like you never listened to begin with. Has an issue with looking students in the eye, seems kind of "off." DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS COURSES
HE HAS HIS OWN TEACHING METHODS AND IF YOU UNDERSTAND ENGLISH YOU WILL UNDERSTAND HIM. IF YOU DON"T DO THE HOMEWORK YOU WILL NOT PASS. THE PROFESSOR DOES NOT DO TH WORK FOR YOU. I AHVE HAD HIM FOR 4 MATH CLASSES BESIDE THIS ONE. I LIKE HIS TEACHING. IF YOU DON'T LIKE DISCIPLINE THEN DON'T TAKE HIM. YOUNGER STUDENTS DON'T LIKE HIS DISCIPLINE.
he needs to stop....he is not good do not get him
He is a horrible teacher. He says that he is the best Precalculus teacher but he is not. I had to drop his class because I was going to fail and I am great in math. He is hard to follow. Why the hell does he have to collect homework? Do not take this teacher.

One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He is rude and condescending! Expects you to already have the answers. His teaching style sucks, his face is practically against the chalkboard most of the time. Do not take him or you'll regret it!!!!!!
Mr. Newsom is strict. You have to listen and pay attention. If you go in with the attitude that you are always right, you won't learn a thing. If you listen, do all the home work and ask intelligent questions he will help you. Definately not for arogant, immature people with a chip on your shoulder. He is tough, but if you want to learn, he is a g

Alright, where to start, this guy is probally the weirdest man ive ever seen, and that is personality and looks... just wait! He will bring a little cup of water less than a quater filled, and it will last him all class. If you want a good laugh take him, and just look at his crazy eyebrows, and creepy teeth. He is by far the worst math prof ever.
I like him a lot hes got a very diffrent way to teach, if you want to go into his calss and mess around your not going to pass. just sit there quietly and listen to him. if you dont understand and you dont want to feel like an idiot sit there and keep listening he goes over things a thousand time to make sure you know what hes talking about. if you
As long as you've taken Algebra within the past few years, the class is easy. It's a review, along with his annoying tips on better ways to do it...his way. He's more than willing to help, but he tends to make you feel stupid in the process. He's weird; he thinks that he's cool, and he always has a cup of water that's always a third full.
Mr Newsom is a great teacher. He has zombie-good looks, weird mannerisms and a quirky teaching method. As long as you PAY ATTENTION and DO HOMEWORK you will pass. I withdrew because I fell behind. He is a very good teacher and is very understanding. Just take notes and pay attention. Oh yeah, grow up because you arent in high school anymore losers!
i am pretty good at math and i switch to mckaig after one test which he gives the 3rd class he is very fast and doesn't explain him self well.he tells you its a good idea to drop his class doesn't drop any grades and gives loads of homework which his whole class is graded on by points not a 1-100 scale. DO NOT TAKE!
Prof Newson is a little off. he looks strange, talks to himself and is condensending to the class. However if you have a good grasp on math I would recommend him. He gives partial credit on tests even if you get the problem wrong. lots of people drop out maybe its cause you have to actually work in pass his class. His water is always a third full!
Newsome is one of those teachers you either like or don't like, not many people are in between, and it seems the majority doesn't like him. Don't be disrespectful, do homework, and his tests are easy. He gives partial credit on tests even if your answer is wrong. Allows retests. Yes he is weird, and too smart, but I wouldn't say he is a bad teacher
Newsom takes pride in the number of students he fails, not the number that succeeds

He is hard, but pay attention and do the homework and you should do fine.
He is hard and has a strange teaching method. But just do the homework, take notes at class, and study and you should do fine.
He talks really fast and it's hard to keep up. If it's your second time around , i'd recommend him. if it's your first time. You will be so lost.
Mr. newsom is a pretty goofy and funny guy. he is a cool person and EXTREMELY smart. however. . he has very messy handwriting, and explains things in a way that arent to understandable. if math isnt your strong point DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I had no problems with his class. Do the homework, and take notes, thats all you need. But I think I'm the only one of the 8 people that passed in my class. Everyone else hated him.
His tests are pretty short, and easy if you've done the homework. He's very smart... if he says something about a mistake you made, just don't take it personally.
if you arent good at math dont take this teacher. if you dont like being made fun of for makng a mistake or asking a question. dont take this teacher. if you have trouble reading terrible hand writing dont take this teacher. If you want to pass this class DEFINITELY DONT take this teacher!!!!
If you are not good at reading a teachers sloppy left hand writing, then dont take this class. I'm really good in math and I withdrawaled from the class cause I had a C and I knew I could get an A. His tests are very short, 8-10 problems. He also likes to make smart remarks that sometimes put people down.
Mr. Newsom talked very monotone, kind of like Squidwird from Spongebob. He is funny in that sense, but also very easy to fall asleep to. I had to withdrawal because I could not pay attention for my life! I do not recommend taking him, unless you're into the Ben Stein thing!
He was hard to understand, and boring, I didnt feel he explained well either. All he ever wanted to talk about was the failing rate of the class. I would not recommend him.
Don't even take his class. He is horribly monotone. I fell asleep in his class the first day and you cant even read his writing on the chalkboard. if you take this class, Good Luck.
monotone. sloppy handwriting. too smart. He has trouble relating to students. He talks about half of class failing. "You must study mathematics eight hours a week to pass my class".RUN! DROP ASAP!
Worse teacher I've met at TCC. He is hard to understand, and flies through the material. He obviously knows a lot about math jut doesn't know how to explain it to others. He suggested even on the first day if you don't already know the first three chapters you should drop his class. only way I learned anything was from reading the book.
Hes not for everyone, only a dozen of us made it out of about 30, but we were all comitted to doing well, and did. Youll get used to his mannerism, and never makes you feel stupid no matter how stupid you think your question maybe.Curves your grade, pretty sure I had a B but gave me an A simply because he knew my I busted my but and knew the course
very smart guy, but he does have a very high fail rate. Out of 19 people in my class only 6 passed. Don't take him unless there is no other way. I don't think he should be teaching math 4, maybe something higher, but not math 4.
Do Not Take a class Taught By This teacher unless you are a math wisard
If you are committed to the course, complete your hw on time, (which easily take you an hour or two, well, it's math, it takes time!) study his notes, you will pass your class. The only stupid questions will be asking questions that we already went over after you missed you class. He is helpful and like good students. I'm taking him for 163 :)
good organization of classes, fair
Not bad. He scared me after the first test, because he said he had never had such a bad class and even filled out withdrawl forms for the students, but I got an A, go figure. very straightforward, but a weird guy. Got used to him and passed the class with an easy A. Just study and go to the math lab in the library, they help a lot.
if you are a serious student and pay attention in class, there is no reason you shouldnt make at least a B. the homework he assigns goes right along with the test. he does tend talk condescendingly to students but its nothing personal, yyou get used to it. however, if you are lazy and dont want to do work, then this class isnt for you
He is a very good teacher, he doesn't mind questions and tries to make jokes to keep students awake...however his monotone voice is a sleeping pill sometimes. Overall...Good.
well he was ok but he is not very clear with his teaching skills and when you try and ask him to explain something you will be even more confused than before you asked him.. he is very sarcastic and raises his eyebrows a lot and he doesnt have very good eye contact but if he see's that you are trying he will make sure you pass!!!!
He goes quickly and gives lots of homework, but if you take notes in class and do the homework, the tests he gives are very easy. He does not like to answer questions, and he says mean things sometimes. But he tries to make jokes, what makes it funny is this eyebrow thing he does. An easy teacher as long as you aren't lazy and do your work.
HATED this class! Mr. Newsom is an awful professor. Very condescending and rude. His examples are pretty decent but in no way relate to the homework assignments or tests. And the class is a snore-fest... I withdrew from the class because I just couldn't stand him anymore... and I was failing anyway. DON'T RECOMMEND
I loved Mr. Newsom! After reading several of the comments posted I came to the conclusion that there are a lot of immature students at Tcc. I will admit that he is a different kind of person but he is brilliant and spent a lot of extra time with me to ensure that I passed. I suggest being honest with him regarding your knowledge of Math and show interest in learning and he will guide you along.
Would not recomend he gives double the homework because he dosent like MML and analysis your book homework, makes you feel dumb if you ask a question he just writes on the board for 2.5 hours then his test does not relate to his notes DO NOT TAKE
Really a terrible teacher not even a tecaher more like a scribe he just scribles on the board then erases it then goes agian for 2.5 hours I attended every class wrote every letter he put on the board down did all the homework(A LOT) still strugling DO NOT TAKE unluckey choice by me.
Mr. Newsom is a brillant professor and is very clear as to what to expect on the exams. He gives practice tests that are extremely similar to the actual exam. This is not a class you can casually attend whenever you feel like it(directly towards recent HS grads). You need to attend class, take the notes, do the practice exams and you will pass.
Mr. Newsom is extremely passionate about math and making sure his students comprehend the subject matter. Take it from my personal experience: passed only a couple tests (going through family issues), was in danger of receiving an R, wasnt even qualified to take final, Mr. Newsom let me take the final(despite not having the right amt of pts) and i
Newsome is just a real teacher. He isnt lazy and going to let you get away with an A for coming to class but he will show you the proper way of doing math which makes it easier for you in the long run. He is quite the character but if you show up to class everyday and do your homework you will get an A with out a doubt.
80 plus to pass, 79 I made, rough class, will retake any other prof. besides him.
I took this class in the summer and I almost died from boredom. Thankfully, he gives you a fifteen minute break so you can breathe. An easy grader on homework, but there is tons of it. It's due on the test day, and he outlines all of it the first day you get in class. It's not too bad. Just be sure to listen to exactly how he phrases things.
he is one of the hardest teachers in the world. He wants his test done in 100 percent manner. he's overall rude. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Mr. Newsoms class is not easy. He treats every class as if we have done it 30 different times. He made sure we all knew how dumb we were for even taking out a calculator when the highest number on a quiz was 71.
The comments on this site do not reflect the Professor Newsom, I've had this misfortune of meeting. He should not be considered a professor but rather a drill instructor. He does not answer questions and humiliates students that are trying to learn. He seems to praise the students that already know the subject matter.
I Would not recommend him if you don't know a little about the course you are taking. He kind of expects you to know a lot before entering the class. I don't think he understands that's why we are there.Don't get me wrong he is a very smart intelligent professor but not easy at all and does not explain very well but funny guy...lol!Kept me laughing
Very intellectual man. He goes over everything in detail and tells you exactly what is on the tests. He adds humor to his lectures, but make sure you come to class prepared. Be ready to learn from lectures! He is the best math teacher in the math department, and gives the most partial credit. Mr. Newsom will teach you so much more than a book can!
Professor Newsome is extremely intelligent & knows his stuff, but would be better suited teaching upper level math b/c he can be condescending & rude if we don't understand the work - to the point that none of us wanted to ask questions in class. He lacks in professionalism: he gave a HANDWRITTEN midterm quiz & provided other sloppy handouts.
One of the few teachers at TCC who actually pushes students to learn and doesn't just spoon-feed them! At first impression, he seems kind of mean, but once you get to know him you'll realize he really does want his students to succeed. Always available for homework questions in his office and even offered to help me with calc next semester!
His lecture pace is perfect for covering the material and making sure that everyone is given time to to take notes. It's not easy material but he's always up for answering questions and he certainly has the brains to do it, even when it gets a little out there. He doesn't collect homework but do all of it because that's where his tests come from.
Newsom is a very smart guy, he knows his math, that's for sure but he cant teach it to others! It takes a while to get used to his sense of humor and his teaching style. He mumbles constantly and is extremely rude to students! He expects you to know the material already. If you are not a math genius DO NOT TAKE HIM! RUN THE OTHER WAY! Please!
Overall explains everything well, just don't bother asking any questions. He is extremely rude and lacks tact. Has a ridiculous amount of homework. Also a strange sense of humor.
Newsom knows his stuff, very smart. Beyond that he is very rude and degrading to students. Offers to answer questions but doesn't help. Pay attention to his notes, he doesn't use the book except for homework. Don't go to the mathlab, they won't know how to help you. His methods are different than the mathlab and the book.
I don't recommend this teacher to anyone. I took his class and had to withdrawal. Very rude, boring, but very smart. He knows his math, but doesn't do well at teaching it. Expects you to already know a lot of information and makes you feel pretty stupid if you don't.
Little corny and strange and can be rude at times but overall a very smart and knowledgeable teacher. Expects you to take responsibility for your self and wont let you get away with things. Math is definitely not my strong subject but received a B in his class. Expect to put the time in if you have him.
Anyone who has stated that they do not recommend Mr. Newsom and/or has commented negatively, I can guarantee, did not put in the time and effort that is required of any math class. Mr. Newsom is the BEST MATH TEACHER I've ever had. I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND him to anyone taking math at tcc. Not only is he a genius- he's hilarious & genuine.
If you are mature enough to want to do the work and learn the material, he's outstanding. He is demanding and passionate but fair and helpful. If you want to gaff off the work and just show up, you'll get murdered. Of note, pay attention to the negative reviews. Most of them can't be bothered to punctuate. If that's you, stay clear.
Worst teacher ever. Moves through the lesson way too fast. Has a ton of cheesy awkward jokes each day of class. Assumes you know everything from previous math classes and criticizes you for not knowing the material. Didn't use the online textbook at all. Pretty much had to teach myself all semester. Just an all around horrible teacher.
If you take Newsom be prepared to learn nothing, have pages on pages of handwritten homework every night, and fail all his test. By the 2nd test half the class was dropped out. He gets angry when the test scores aren't good then makes fun of his students for doing bad. Take Mr. Kirby for a real math professor who actually knows how to teach.
