review doesn't cover anything on the test; answers questions with questions; tests very difficult
Newsom was a difficult professor, but well worth it. I've put off 1302 for a year just to take him again. The previous student must not have been prepared or perhaps spent early life in a cave.
This guy is very hard. He gives no breaks to anyone. Eespecially if he doesn't like you.
Hard but fair professor. He tells you what he expects and if you don't live up to that then you get the grade you deserve. Very willing to help out a student if student notifies him ahead of time of something. Overall I really enjoyed his class!!
it's a hard class, but i like how he isn't totally anal about dates and things. he makes history interesting, which not everyone can do.
Goes off subject a lot and confuses the heck out of me. Especially those idiots that feel like they have to contribute something to every topic he goes over.
He is awful and I wouldn't recommend anyone be stuck with him. I know dread History classes. His test are extremely hard and I am an A student. (Just to put into perspective)
He is the most irrelevant professor ever! His lectures have nothing to do with his tests and his reviews have nothing to do with either! He is helpful to an extent but for the most part not all that helpful. He has a big heart but is a hard professor.
He forgets this isn't his personal forum for sharing his conservative Republican opinions. I got HIS version of Texas Politics, not an objective one.
I love this guy! When I had trouble with a paper or anything he was always willing to help. He may get off topic in class but i always found it informative and interesting. The study guide helped me easily pass my tests, but u have to be willing to study.
sort of a funny guy, sort of. total right winger and wants you to know it. loves military history and wants you to know it. sort of a tuff class, he's fickle with the difficulty
Difficult but fascinating class. Very dynamic and lively lectures, great sense of humor. Outspoken about his political views, but is very fair to those who disagree. Gives curves regularly but otherwise not much slack. If you study well, you'll do fine.
Great teacher - his lectures are lively and he has a dynamic personality. His tests are hard for many, but if you attend class, go over the study guides he gives you, and most importantly, read the book thoroughly, you should be fine.

This guy really knows his stuff... He is one of the only hist teachers here that I don't fall asleep to in class. He also brings in really awesome weapons that he collects. He also gives study guides,
he never stays on topic. about 1/4 of the class is spent talking about his thesis or something else just as stupid. he grades unreasonably hard, and won't tell you how he grades.
great stories, long lectures but interesting. Unclear about tests since we were not given study guides. So much information not sure what is testworthy. Overall, a good guy just needs to come down to the students level
Dr. N's Lectures provide a plethora of information, & no, he doesn't always give a study guide, but this is a sr. level course, NOT HIGH SCHOOL. YOU have to decide what's testworthy. It's called THINKING! He's a good professor if you're willing to study.
An amazing professor with a love for what he does. He is clear with his grading methods if you pay attention in class. He explains the processes clearly in his syllabus. I am grateful to have been in his classes. Thanks Dr. Newsom
Dr. Newsom is no longer teaching Political Science effective Fall 2004. But his american govt class exams all had 100 questions on it which were a BIT MUCH. No essays though on any of the exams.
If you take Dr. Newsom's class READ THE BOOK. The tests come almost entirely from the book while he draws very little from lectures. However, whether you agree with him or not, his lectures can be very entertaining. If you have a question, he'll help.
Don't take him Tues/Thur...seems like the class never ends. Read your book, listen in class if you choose. Very fair grader, gives curves sometimes and throws out questions on test that weren't fair.
Had Dr Newsom for Texas Politics. The subject is pretty stupid, but he did try to make it entertaining. Tests are the hardest m/c tests I've ever had. Lectures are pretty much useless- MUST read the book!
great guy and professor, but very hard tests. does give curves though. lectures are usually boring.
Awesome instructor. He's very opinionated but fair to those who disagree. Lectures are interesting and informative. If you take this class from him, read your book and take good notes. He has shifted to gathering test material from both sources. Tests aren't difficult if you study. Gives a curve.
Tests are everything. Lectures are extremely detail and cause/effect oriented. He has curved the test scores to bring the test avg. to around a 75 each time. He gives extremely specific study guides, throws out poorly worded questions when they slip in and answers all questions.
he's a jolly ol' fella. very amusing and entertaining. Tests are hard and specific but if you really study..youll pass. Very Conservative and not afraid to show it. Dipping..not a problem just bring a cup!
This guy is my favorite professor this semester. No assigned homework so you can go at your own pace. Just three exams and the final. The only thing is you have to study pretty hard before each test, they can be brutal if you're not prepared.
He is very clear on what he wants. If you do the outline that he posts then you will do fine in his class. If you interact with him and ask questions then you will enjoy the class a lot more. He will tell some great stories!
HAVE TO READ!!! FINAL ISNT COMPREHENSIVE EXCEPT FOR LIKE 3 QUESTIONS. HARD TESTS BUT 15% OF YOUR GRADE IS ATTENDANCE SO THAT HELPS IF YOU JUST GO. DIDNT GET MUCH FROM LECTURES BUT HE'S PRETTY ANIMATED SO IT WASNT TOO BAD. DEFINATELY A HARD CLASS, BUT A PRETTY COOL INSTRUCTOR.
knows what he is talking about, tests are pretty hard
I LOVED Dr. Newsom. Lectures follow the book, tests completely from book. HAVE TO READ! U will fail his class if u dont study fairly hard before tests because theres no homework. Hes very funny and loves to KNOW his students. Study guide tells u everything u need to know to make an A on the tests.
he's one of the best profs on this campus. definitely in my top five. YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOK. ask for help, he's always willing to give it. study. he loves his students, loves being here, loves to teach. if you put in the effort, you'll be greatly rewarded. take him.
Great prof, it is a must take prof. He is a lot of work, but he is also a lot of fun. He is one of those profs that make you love the subject.
I hate history and yet I loved his class. He is full of life and energy plus he's a riot. The tests were really difficult, but his style kept me going through the long nights of re-reading the text book.
Dr. Newsom is a wonderful teacher! He has a real passion for history that really shows in his lectures. His tests are really hard so you have to really take good notes, and be sure to read the book!!
So freaking hard- you MUST read book AND notes to even think about passing a test.however,he knows what he is talking about.Likes to talk about his new land and personal stuff alittle too much though, however it does take away from those long lectures. Never cancels class or lets out early.
Funny Professor, always makes you laugh! Especially the personal stories!!! The stories always go along with the lesson and make it more clear and interesting! I have had him 2 semesters and have learned more History than I ever knew before!
COMPLETELY AWESOME PROF. ONE OF THE BEST AT UTT. MAKES HISTORY COME ALIVE!! HIS TESTS ARE HARD...APPROX. 80 - 100 PROBLEMS. MUST READ BOOK AND TAKE DECENT NOTES!! IF YOU GET THE CHANCE...DO IT, YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!! :)
Great professor!! Very interesting lectures - Gives you helpful study guides, lecture outlines, and study sessions. Definitely recommended!!
He's not the easiest prof, but he knows what he's talking about. Tests are scantron, but he asks about details. Pay attention
An excellent professor-really knows his stuff...one of the best professors on the campus.Has great lectures! MAKE SURE YOU READ THE BOOK AND TAKE NOTES!!!!!! Tests are quite difficult, but if you ask for help, he will give it.

DOESN'T ROUND GRADES AT ALL! YOU THINK HES COOL UNTIL IT COMES TO GRADES. HE SAYS HE GIVES YOU A CURVE IF LESS THAN 75, BUT HE ALWAYS DOESN'T. CLASS AVG. 69 - NO CURVE!
NOT IMPRESSED. HE ONLY PUT UP LEC. OUTLINES FOR FIRST EXAM. WHAT GOOD IS THAT? COME ON, HELP YOUR STUDENTS!
i liked your personal stories; it was a very funny class.
If you want U.S. History as told by the republican party, you will like this class. He would be an excellent teacher if he did not slant lectures so much to the right (wingnut) side. His off-hand comments were sometimes narrow-minded. An easy class to make a high grade in if you read the book and show up. Just don't believe everything he tells u.
This professor is awesome! ANYONE who says his class is too hard is LAZY and wasn't willing to study. You can make an A in this class easily. All you have to do is crack a book, study hard, and fill out the IDs which he posts on Blackboard. They help quite a bit.
He seems cool until the first test...this was upper division History and I didn't learn much more than I already knew from 1302. Lectures don't have much to do with the tests. The books we read were interesting but he asked vague questions while expecting specific answers. He also expected students opinions to agree with his. Somewhat arrogant also
Newsom's tests are almost all multiple choice that are straight from the book/testbank. Newsom is really, really right wing and he wants most students to agree with him, in a way that's kind of unappealing. If you want someone who is easy, by all means take him. if you want to think and be respected for those opinions take Murphree or Mendoza.
Definitely tolerable. Gets off-topic some and that can be kinda annoying. But all-in-all good teacher.
This teacher is SO into hearing himself speak. I would say that Murphree(?spelling)is so much better. He is not clear on his notes does not tell you what is important and goes off into left field ALL the time I have no idea what to study. I would not recommend him to teach ANYTHING
he's an f-ing trip! love him to death!
This professor is one of the best I have had. It is a challenging class, but if you take notes, read the book, and do the study guide, you'll be fine in his class.
This is perhaps one of the best teachers on campus. His lectures are very informative and entertaining. Even if you never liked history, you'll love his class. Make sure to read the text, take very good notes, and do the study guide before each test. If you follow this advise, you'll sail through this class.

Awesome teacher. Lectures are entertaining. Never fell asleep, which I normally do. Take his tests seriously. Do the study guide as soon as you get it, GO TO HIS STUDY SESSIONS. He curves test grades, which does come in handy.
Great lecturer, alwasy entertaining, and really has a grasp on American history. Only complaint is that he tends to go off on these conservative diatribes in which he attacks the evils of liberalism and the federal income tax. But this doesnt really take away from the course, and sometimes I found his rants entertaining and even sometimes convincin
Awesome professor. Tells you on the first day what he expects from the class. As long as you do what he tells you, then you will be fine. You will actually have to READ the assigned readings (DUH!) because that will be key to the test. Very Republican, but if you can back what you believe then he will respect you! I really like Newsom!!
Yeah, he's rightwing ho. But i don't think he really respects you for your views, that is what he'd like you to think. his views aren't supposed to make an impression, that is the point. if you want soft readings (i.e., not history, but contemporary politics) and a slightly detailed survey class, he's your guy. If you want challenging...well
This is one of the hardest teachers at UT Tyler. Although he is good at what he does, he is very unfair in the amount of information he expects his students to remember. If you want to spend all your time studying for HIS class then take him...otherwise I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Very unfair on amount of material needed for each exam. He somehow thinks his 1301 and 1302 classes are senior level with the amount of material that is covered on each exam. I like the idea of not knowing dates.
Great Class! Very exciting & easy 2 listen 2. He tells U from the beginning on what 2 expect so U know that U need to work hard from the start. Alot of material to cover, but after U take the test, U have a huge grasp of knowledge...that is if U studied the GIVEN material and he rewards U 4 being there. Go 2 class!
this dude is so hard, his test are impossible, and i study for them and everything, you have a millioin identities for each test, dont recommend him at all
He's a great guy and he tells you what he expects from the start. It's a lot of material but he holds study sessions and lets u ask what u don't understand or something you miss. He gives a percentage in the final grade for coming to class so it helps to go to class. I recommend him if you can study hard and work at getting good grades!
He is very entertaining, yet expects alot out of his students. He lets you know from the beginning that it is not just a blow off course. He is very good at what he does... although you have to study very very hard for his tests :) (good teacher)
I am about to die in this class.. he does warn you that his class is hard...but he is very unclear in his lectures...and no matter how hard i study for his class...i cant seem to pass those damn tests....note to all incoming freshman try not to get his class
Yes, this is a hard class, but he tells you. He goes over most of the material on the tests in his study sessions, and his study guides that he puts online are very helpful. He is hard, but I recommend him.
i dontknow about the class bein easiy or hard, its about being unclear. sure, if someone tells you its hard that is automatically oK. But why teach names of individuals or places that are obscure? part of the problem is a lack of respect toward students. but hey if you like being preached to, go for it. somepeople don't like it.
Really cares about his students, but makes it clear you must work. Attendance is part of your grade. Class consists of lecture. Take good notes, some of the test comes from lecture. You will have to study a lot, but he holds study sessions before each tests & tells you exactly what to study. Tests can be hard. Overall, a good teacher I think.

he is probably one of the best professors UTT has. very interesting to listen to and knows his stuff. if you are looking for an easy A don't take him, but if you actually want to learn something and get an education-- take his class! I PROMISE ITS NOT AS BAD AS PEOPLE MAKE IT OUT TO BE. he's always there if u need help and attend study sessions.
It is as bad as people make it out to be. consider that in a 1301 class, he doesn't really take other people's views into account. sometimes these views are silenced by the sheep that follow. if u don't believe it, look at how there is a glowing review everytime there is a negative one. do u think that is a coincidence?
Regardless of his very biased political views he's still a good professor. You DO learn a great deal in his class. The majority of those that cant pass his class are too lazy to do the IDs and open their book once in a while. That's all it takes to get an A. Trust me I know.
Dr. Newsom is by far the best professor I have had yet. He loves what he teaches and that makes it more interesting. His tests are hard though but if you need help, he has no problem with it. Study sessions help a lot and if you can't get to them, tell him and he will try and fit it to where you can. I recommend taking him if you want to learn.
Dr. Newsom flippin' rocks! He's funny, he has a passion for history, and he presents it in a very learnable way (if you just pay attention). Sure, he's not an easy A, but you'll remember what you learn in his class for the rest of your life.
Great proffessor! Definately knows the material and tells you exactly what to expect on his exams.. Go to the study sessions.. make note cards and actually pay attention and take notes in class and you will do fine. Gives curves when needed.. Learn ID's. not an easy A but definately worth taking this proffesor.Funny guy too. Definately Reccomend!
newsome is by far the best teacher ive had. hes funny but gets serious when its class time. very professional. i wish i could take him for a class every semester. take notes, go to the study sessions and pay attention in class, makes an easy A or B. besides knowing what hes talking about, he can also teach the material to others, unlike other profs.
Newsom is by far my least favorite. He tells uncomfortable stories about classroom incidents, he gives you way to much information and has a tendency to get off track. By the time the test rolls around you have so much information that you can't figure out what to study. My suggestion is don't pay attention in class - just read text and assigned bk

Amazing teacher, by far my favorite this semester. His tests are very difficult, but he more than makes up for it with his amazing lectures and study sessions. He likes to work with his students to make sure they get the most out of his course and he makes his class as interesting as possible.
i loved dr newsomes class. all you have to do is go to the study sessions and make flash cards of the identifications on his study guides! he is really a fun and great prof.
Ignore the complainers. . TAKE FROM HIM!!! I love Dr. Newsom, he's probably one of the best. His tests aren't that bad if you pay attention in class and read the assigned books. The books are a little hard to read and you're not sure what he's going to ask about it for the test but other than that it's a good class and great teacher!!
AMAZING TEACHER! kept me laughing, Challanged me, and Kicked my butt when i fell behind. SO easy to talk to and an Amazing Christian Professor! HARD as Heck, but worth it!!!
HARD CLASS! Not going to lie. Make sure that you read along, the book is very useful. Keep up with the study guides and memorize terms. Dates are not a hge deal with him. Just know presidents, names, big events etc. and you should do fine. Its tough but, if it was easy wouldnt everyone graduate?
Very honest about what is expected. Lectures are fast and furious, but very comprehensive. Newsom is a great guy on the personal level and expects scholarship from everyone. Not a blow off class!!
Great teacher but his class is hard. He expects you to read and study. He teaches the material very well but you will HAVE to study. Go to class and read the book, make outlines. Highly recommended for history majors. Amazing teacher.
A right-wing conservative Republican who can't seem to help pushing his political views.
I'm a senior and this is the worst/hardest class I've taken. I studied for 20+ hours per test, never missed a class, knew everything on HIS outlines, read the books, and still never received higher than a B on any test. He's an arrogant man who shares his views too much. NOT recommended by any means.
Newsom was one of the best teachers I've ever had. It's refreshing to find someone who hasn't been enmeshed with the fallacies of revisioned history. A true scholar, a dedicated teacher, and a friend.
Dr. Newsom is an actual professor, he will not give you a grade. He expects a college student to be able to read and interpret the material. As well as integrate his lecture. If you are a lazy person I would not recommend his classes. If, however, you consider yourself a scholar take his class. You will definitely come away a better student.
i took dr. newsom for tx history. it was a lot of the same ol same ol, texas was great and so on. i am not sure about how "real" a history professor he actually is, but his tests are a little on the side for the masses and he offers no writing assignments. for a university class that is probably not ideal.
He knows his subject, though he tends to present it in class with a slight tilt to the right. Nice guy, though, and helpful.
Great teacher. Keeps history class interesting which most professors struggle to do. Tests are not hard if you study. If you do the study guide and make note cards you should have no problem making an "A" on his tests.
Newsom is a really good professor. He really knows his facts and he makes the class pretty entertaining. His tests are hard, so you really have to study for them. He gives you study guides and there's usually an SI for his class. If you take his class, go to the SI session. It makes things much easier. RECOMMENDED
newsom is great teacher...you will learn so much from him.ive taken his history 1 and 2 and making an A. yes he has one of the hardest test on campus but if you look at the study guide and take notes using the terms in the book and memorizing the lists you will do just fine.
As a health major, I'm not very interested in history at all, but Dr. Newsom's lectures were so interesting! Much better than watching the History Channel. I really enjoyed going to class. You've got to study pretty hard to do well on his exams, but it's worth it. Great professor!
Very challenging but not impossible. Requires a lot of studying.
Dr. Newsom needs to stop using his position to push his personal politics. For crying out loud I'm a Republican myself, but he bashes either President Obama or Vice President Biden EVERY DAY in our U.S. Social History lecture. He thinks it's funny, but as a young Republican I want to assure everyone we're not all as obnoxious as this guy.
newsom is a cool guy he provides everything u need to do well on the exams. no essays. he is funny too
Liked the class and the Dr.'s input and direction of the class. Fair on the tests just explain your views and theories. would of liked to have taken more classes from him
Used the class for his personal platform. He spent so much time praising his favorite religious figures and "softening" the image of slavery that we didn't even get halfway through the syllabus. We all have our opinions, but Newsom crosses the line into advocacy and can't seem to separate his Southern/Republican opinions from his lectures.
He is a great guy to take history from! I had him for 1302 which is basically from the end of the Civil war to Present! He is very passionate about what he teaches and can therore keep your attention. His tests aren't easy, but if you pay attention and study the review, you will pass with good grades.
This class has a heavy work load. If you are not a history major its a little rediculous. It would take a week to do his study guide... the test had tricky multiple choice, essay, lists, and fill in the blank. Must attend class b/c he gives out lists that are not in the book or posted on blackboard. I would recommend you to read the book.
He's bad.
He talks the entire class time...attendance is part of your semester grade and tests have material from both the book and the lectures
Terrible. Loves history, but how much you are required to know for the tests is just ridiculous. I'm a good student and I had to shove aside studying for all my other classes to be able to get decent grades on his tests. If you're not a history major Don't Take This Guy! And he's completely narcissistic too.
I liked this professor. come to class, take about a page or two of notes each day, fill in the review from the book--make an A! PLUS, UT Tyler offers SI for this class... (VERY helpful)
People who say you have to take notes and learn everything about history are idiots. Just simply read the book and listen to his great stories. Wonderful teacher and very willing to help.
Great professor he really knows his stuff. I enjoyed his lectures and he keeps them entertaining and relevant. Beware if you are not a history major! He gives 4 books that you have to read that are on the essay exam and also a book report. Unless you have time to do the extra reading I wouldn't suggest.
I came to have a deep respect for Dr Newsom in this class. His tests are NOT easy but if you study you will do fine. He keeps his lectures VERY interesting and captivates one's attention. I learned a lot, had a good time, and passed with a good B. Recommended!
He was an arrogant and ridiculously difficult professor. The amount of information required for his exams was ridiculous! He also loves picking on students and asking them questions that he knows they CLEARLY don't know the answer to. He's like a genius in history, so he speaks to everyone as if they are a historian as well! Not recommended!
Horrible teacher. In every way. He curves every one of his tests more than 10 points each. This indicates his teaching style and content is not in line with his testing. His tests contain material not in text or in class. I did better on tests studying only WIKIPEDIA. DO NOT TAKE if you need a grade higher than a C.
Very hard teacher. i have a easy time with history so i usally look over my notes about 2 hrs b4 a test n pass with a B or A, but not this guy, his test are extremely challenging. 10 plus hrs of studying for a B. Great teacher, and individual. you will learn the material more like it was a third arm. he is very helpfull. but just a very toughgrade
his class is interesting , and i like history but i had to study way more than i should have for a core history class. i am not a history major. i have a life. there is no reason for study guides to be 290 plus items and then random things are on the test that are mentioned only once in the book. i took this class in the summer...never again.
He's a great professor. His stories are really interesting and his lectures are great. Only complain anyone has is his tests are KILLER. Go over everything in your notes. Go over the textbook. Go over the supplementary book. He WILL use everything he gives you. Go everyday. NOT a blowoff class. He is an enjoyable professor, but those tests...NOPE!
Awesome teacher. His tests are a little tough, but if you go thru and pay attn to ANYTHING he has a who, what, where and when on, those are probably your ID words. Great lecturer. Very funny. Essays are from the books you read. Take good notes in class and in the books you read. He is fair also. Doesnt hold grudges like some instructors do.
I love Dr. Newsom's class!! He teaches history like it is a story and not just facts. The tests are a little tough but if you read and take good notes you will be fine.
Dr. Newsom is by far the best professor I've had. His stories are very interesting (and history's always been boring to me). His tests are tough...but it's a university...it's not supposed to be easy. He also curves the test grades, therefore making it much easier. Just take notes, do the given study guides, read the material, go to SI and go to class...and you'll pass this class with no problem.
This class requires lots of studying, but you will learn a lot. His grading is very fair. He curves the tests, so if you read and take notes you can easily pass. His lectures are very interesting, but he is a little too open about his own opinions. He occasionally gives rather one-sided perspectives on an issue.
I never had a good expirence with history but I walked in and after the first lecture loved it! He changed the way I thought about history and made it seem more like a story rather than facts The test are hard buthe tell you what he expects you to know he does do curves and extra credit His lectures are alway exciting and interesting ready for 1302
Dr. Newsom is an interesting lecturer. However, he gives his own opinions/biases rather than encourage students to examine and research and come to their own conclusions. Also, he is way too slow to grade and return papers -- very frustrating.
Good morning scholars! The class lecture Newsom gives will be very informative but hard to decipher what is important for test time. The test he gives will be impossible.. the multiple choice is extremely long, and he will have you memorize six different lists putting two random ones on their. He doesn't care about your success.. 50% fail rate
This is the fourth class I have had. All A's. if you follow his directions, you will have NO problems with his tests. you dont have to study a ton IF you follow his directions of what is on the test. His stories are awesome and he makes you think because what he teaches is NOT the junk the revisionists want you to learn. Listen and you will do fine
This is the 3rd class I have had with him. If you listen to what he says, you will do fine. If you listen, you wont have to study EVERY single note you took either. he is always in his office to help a student. I have yet to meet ONE person who does not like his classes. Tough yes, but honest and his stories are hilarious.
Awesome lecture but very hard tests.
Dr. Newsom is not the easiest teacher in the world, but he is entertaining. He makes the class more enjoyable because of this fact.
Test are pretty tough. HOWEVER, he is hilarious and makes the lectures interesting.
He made the lecture interesting but the class is impossible to get an A/B in. You're lucky if you even pass. I wouldn't recommend.
Very enthusiastic about Texas History. To make a good grade in this class, you must take down every word that he says in your notes. Then, try to memorize the information and read the textbook and the other books assigned. Overall though, this is a class that you can get an A in.
Do not take his class if you want an open minded liberal arts education! Newsom makes his (very) conservative political views obvious, and I found several parts of his lectures to be inaccurate at best. Not recommended!
I enjoyed Newsom's class. It is difficult but not impossible by any means. You WILL use the textbook. He is a very helpful professor and cares about students. I would recommend this class.
No assignments were given, grade strictly based off of the very few test grades.
Dr. Newsom was tough. He expects you to read out of the book, go over lectures, learn "list" and know between 50-130 terms before each test. The class was boring. I will not be taking his classes again because he is not clear about what he is saying and his powerpoints do not match what he is talking about. Only take him if you really love history.
Funny professor, don't let that fool you though because the tests are extremely hard. If you don't read textbooks then don't take this class
Need to read the book and go to class to pass this class. If you take notes and listen, you'll at least get a C.
If you are wanting to take an easy history class this one isn't for you. It requires a lot of work to make a good grade in the class. His lectures don't follow with the book, so it makes the tests insanely hard. The tests are awful. Just don't do this to yourself.
This class was insane. The tests are crazy, without reading the book and memorizing it and his off-topic lectures, you're not going to pass. I pulled a B in that class after at least 4 mental breakdowns and lot of extra credit. If you don't go to class you're screwed. If you're not good at memorizing, SAVE YOURSELF. Take Dotson.
Honestly, this is not a difficult class at all if you actually do some work. Made an A in his 1301 class and I am currently making an A in his 1302 class. Go through your book and highlight all the terms and put them onto notecards. Study them 2 weeks in advance before the exam. Make a study guide for his lecture notes. Memorize the lists! Easy A.
Do yourself a favor and take someone else for history. You'll be glad you did.
I learned by far the most history in one semester with Newsom than I have my ENTIRE life. And it wasn't even hard! His lectures were (for the most part) very entertaining. The only grades are the tests, and those were only moderately challenging, mostly multiple choice, with a few short answers. I 100% recommend him. I wish I could take again.
This class was very hard. He teaches as if every student in class is a history major.
Fantastic teacher. The class covers a lot of material and the class I took was a hybrid so it consisted of a lot of at home videos, but he made it interesting. Really laid back, usually gives a curve and gives some extra credit. Hard course but worth taking it with him.
You are graded on 4 exams and your attendance in class. 3 chapter exams which are 20% of your final grade, final exam that is 25% of your final grade, and attendance 15% of final grade. Book required. Pay attention in class as this is where your answers to exams will be given.
There afe specific details you have to remember on tests, but he is a great lecturer that posts all his lectures online
His tests are pretty much the only thing graded throughout the semester, so they're worth a lot. His lectures are very fast paced, and the tests are incredibly difficult. He even has a curve on each test to get the average up to 70, and this is usually 20 points, which means the real class average is around 50. He gives extra credit though
Despite the curve he gives to make the average a 70, it was the hardest class Ive taken this semester and I consider myself good in history. Online lectures/in person lectures never covered test material, only covered essay in the exams. Do not take if you care about your GPA and/or passings.
History 1301 is a hybrid class at UT Tyler. You go to a face to face lecture Monday, and watch a video lecture on Wednesday. DONT take this class if you are worried about your GPA! You NEED to watch the videos, you will not pass the tests if you dont. Take notes on everything too, the tests have very specific questions!
Dr. Newsom is awesome! I took his HIST 1302 class in fall 2019. His course is very textbook-heavy, and if you don't read the book, chances are, you'll fail. Although, his lectures are very entertaining and you can tell that he really cares about the subject. He posts all of his lectures online, so if you need to, you can watch them later. Recommend
Only gives exams, worth 20% each, and the questions are very specific to his hour long videos. My friend did a speech to transcript on 3 videos and it totaled to 59+ pages, so these videos are looong. He doesn't write notes on his powerpoints, requires you to also read (useless)and the only reason I passed was because of the extra credit he offers.
Grades are only tests, his lectures are boring and I have no clue what the main points of it are. He talks a lot and test questions can be very specific.
The course consists of 5 tests (no homework/quizzes). The tests are incredibly lecture specific so if you don't pay attention/ watch the videos you won't do well. The lectures are about an hour each (4 videos a week). This course was difficult because there is no homework/quizzes to help "fluff" your grade.
Professor Newsom is a very nice man and a great lecturer, but the tests are HARD. There are 4 grades for the course, all of which are tests. If you are a A-B type of student you will be able to pass, anything lower will be very difficult to pass. His lectures are fun and informative, but again the tests will knock you out.
Professor Newsom himself is awesome. He knows history well, and his lectures are enjoyable. However, the class is hard. The entire course is graded solely on the tests (a small percentage goes towards attendance), so there is no wiggle room. The course is hybrid which is nice. Great professor, challenging class.
This was an easy A. If I could go back though, I would recommend taking this course online or taking a CLEP test in order to get the credit to save time and money. The lectures were enjoyable and entertaining but if you have taken any US History in high school I'm sure you could test out of the class or take it over the summer at a faster pace.
Professor was good regarding with lectures being available both through audio and in video, and in person. He made lectures interesting, but the class is both heavily tested on lectures and textbook. I definitely recommend reading in order to pass. He does does put a curve on tests, so that good. The tests are hard, so study.
Expects you to memorize what you read and hear in lecture. Does not give study guide or homework to help us pinpoint the details, then tests and makes that the large part of the grade. Since the hundreds of pages he makes you read are hard to remember, the test ends up being your chance to fail rather than learn and grow in knowledge.
He believes that every student learns the same way when they don't and that's what made my experience just okay. He breezes through lectures and rarely leaves time for questions. I would zone out for two seconds, try to jump back in, and would be lost for the next 10 minutes of the class. He's a good professor, just not for me and my learning style
On the first exam the class average WITH CURVE was a 55....... and no one I know is passing this course. He pulls from lecture and random knowledge from the textbook quizzes, but no one knew until recently. If you like history, this would be a good course but if not, dont take this!
Professor Newsom's HIST1302 class is challenging, but his engaging lectures and the option to use unstuck study for supplementary study prep can help you succeed. The tests cover both lectures and textbook, so staying on top of the material is key. With diligent effort, you can come out with a solid grade.
