Intelligent individual.
Dr. Obertino is uncompromising and challenging, which is an admirable and a rare quality in a professor. He actually expects you to think.
If you're willing to give up all of your free time and to neglect your other classes his class isn't that bad. You have to memorize half the dictionary, never miss class, be prepared for a quiz every day, and be able to understand his humor.
Must have critical thinking skills to take his class. Quite a bit of reading, but this IS college, right? Dry sense of humor, and appreciates comments. Get a dictionary, if you don't already have one... He expects you to learn...
Had an upper div poetry class with Dr. O. He is an extremely difficult instructor. He isn't fair at all. Knowing that he is the only instructor teaching this class that some people need to graduate, go into it expecting to study your arse off.
Although I must admit that I'm learning a lot in this class, I think that he plays favorites and is rather unfair in this regard. He's extremely intimidating and I think that he takes pride in this.
I'll be retaking this class!he does have a weird sense of humor & i agree, he's not nice.
lots of reading, lots of quizzes.
Many dont like him, but I do. Challenging but fair. Must read the assignments,
I've had Dr. O for 3 classes. I was scared the first time I had him because he is intimidating and kinda new age-y. But, once that class was over, I realized that through his eccentricities, I learned a great deal.
learned a lot.
Thought he was too hard at first; learned a lot becuase of high standards and he knows a lot about a lot of thigns that he relates to lit.
he doesnt like to take other pple's opinions and is very singleminded. he def. makes you read over and beyond what you should. a great christmas gift for him is a pair of glasses. you have to memorize a dict. by the end of the semester. he actually recommends you making one of your own for his class
He hocked a loogey in front of me, but he was surprisingly funny, in a dry, sarcastic way.
Definitely learned alot. Challenges lots of popular ideas.
Dr. O rocks!
Not to be rude, but he is an extremely bad teacher. He is very knowledgable, however, he doesn't care about the students or helping them to learn. You are EXPECTED to know how to write perfect papers, understand all materials, memorize poem titles for quizes, etc. He is very unfair.
It was the worst course I have ever had. Dr. Obertino thinks he knows more than the students!!!! I hate that, He is singleminded and criticizes everything and everyone
Critical thinking skills useful in this class. Learned a lot about literature and its relationship to politics today.
Excellent professor; excellent course!
Im' looking froward to taking another course from him!
Likeable and knows a lot.
HIs grading is totally unrealistic. If I wanted to be graded like this I would have stayed at M.U.
He is t he liberal professor my dad warned me about.
Everybody says he is the hardest. He is.
he was horrible, all he talked about was politics..i was enrolled in an american lit class not poli sci...he preached...didn't teach..said he was open minded...he aparrently doesnt understand the concept.
One of the professors who really helped me prepare for grad school.
The pressure is definitely on in this class from the first day to the end.
I have had a crush on him ever since I took a course with him. If it were possible, I would marry him and bear his children.
I am a working man with a family not a book worm English major. How about a course that shows movies and has alot less reading.
How about you (below) get a life. Obertino teaches English, not movies. Your supposed to read. I'm sick of people complaining about teachers who assign homework. Pathetic. Obertino is really smart and cares about his subject. He assigns reading because that's his job. I did my job in his class and read the assigments. And I did OK
I learned a lot in this class. There is a lot of reading and a lot of information. And he didn't spoon feed us, but there are review sessions to ask questions. New agey yes and often relates something in what we read to current events. This class is not an easy A, but an A that I got because I worked for it.
My only complant about him is that he includes his opinions. I didn't pay to take this class to hear about how you feel about Bush, or the war. However, the class will teach you alot, and I would reccommend it for everyone.
Though a little rough around the edges. I trully believe he is just tryign to scare people out of his class. He seems intimidating, but he's smart and will prepare you for the real college experience. this is high school anymore, so everyone needs to grow up.
While I understand this is an English class, his expectations are high. If your do the reading (which there is a lot of), you will do okay. He does seem to try and scare the students, and he injects his strange opinions into everything.
Love the way he relates what we're reading to what is happening in the world.
horrible all of the papers we had to write we had to do in class in one hour
Good class, a lot of reasing. If you don't have the time to read. don't take this class. If you do the reading, you will do great. Injects his opinion in nearly every class, so if you really don't like Bush, you'll probably enjoy it. Has an odd personality, but still amusing. Not very helpful, and definately tries to intimidate students. Not for everyone, but if you enjoy a challenge, again, you'll do okay.
I took (Brit lit) "Obe" 1n 1998. I have taught now for the last 6yrs and now on the college level. I must say I model my presentations and lectures after Obe (not as strict) and my students learn so much. I am glad Obe was hard on us and made us see the difference between "Tragic Flaw" and Hamartia. He was very helpful and a fantastic teacher.
Godamn hard but goddamn good. Learned a lot in his course.
While I'm doing very well in this class, I wouldn't recommend it. He scares you out of taking it. All I have to say is read the assigned material and you'll do fine on the quizzes. He has a lot of in class papers, so if you get stressed easily, i wouldn't take it.
Being a nontraditional student who has had some real problems to deal with, I am amazed at the people who talk about scarey and hard. Try the real world folks. Learned a lot in the class, partly because there are so many pop quizzes, partly because Dr O knows his stuff.
I didn't think I would like this course, but it turned out that I did. Lots of humor (very dry) and fun reading the plays.
This guy really knows how to teach poetry. I never thought I would like poetry, but now I do.
this dude is awesome
He is one of the only teachers at Central who fits my idea of a college professor.
very challenging course
Far out class. We talked about alot of weird stuff. Tough grading though. You definitely have to work to do OK.
Finally found a course at Central that put the hurt on me and made me study. But like the coach said, more pain, more gain. Great sense of humor.
Awesome knowledge of literature and history. Jokes, but on the whole pretty formal. If you keep up with the reading, grading is not bad.
WHOA DUDE! I barely kept my 3.00.
Thought he was too hard, but now that I am grad school, I see that grad school is a lot harder than the O.
I loved the class. No I didn't make an A but the B i got made me proud. He's the first teacher that made me study.
He is very cynical in class and doesn't care if you sleep as long as you show up. His test were really hard and his essay questions were insane
quizz, quizz, quizz. Fortunately I'm a major.
******* hard and ******* brilliant. This is one of the few courses I am glad I took.
His idea of extra credit is to offer additional questions at the end of a quiz, but if you get the extra credit wrong, it will subtract points from your quiz score. for example if you get 10 out of 10 on the quiz and attempt two extra credit questions and get them wrong your grade for the quiz will be 8 out 10. This really sucks!!
Tried to switch this class because I knew how hard he was. Had perfect attendance and read every story/every assignment, and still only got a B. (My first one ever in English) In the end I learned a lot about literature, and the fact that he can clean out a classroom by midterm.
Definitely doesnt teach to the lowest denomenator. He's brilliant and hilarious if you enjoy dark humor. His class is challenging and what I expected college to be like. Liked the way he related literature to Greek and Roman culture.
I HATE THIS GUY WITH A PASSION.. Horrible experience, don't take him if you have no interest in literature. Pop Quizzes all the time, horrible test essays worth 50% of grade. He is mean, don't ever talk back to him or he'll patronize and belittle you infront of everyone. If you don't like to read book after book after book - STAY AWAY!!!
People either love him or hate him. I enjoyed his class more than I expected to, his humor helped. Just keep up with the reading.
Loved this class! Read a lot and learned a lot from that and lectures. Plus, he allowed us to bring food to class, a big advantage for me bec I didn't usually have time for breakfast. The extra credit worked different from what anothr guy wrote. Plus ten if right, minus five if wrong.
Awesome dude!
This couse really challenged me. The ancient writers kinda grow on you though, and Dr O is good at comparing what they were writing about with what's going on now in the US. Really p***d off a Bush supporter next to me. great sense of dry humor.
Some people don't like him. His teaching style is VERY...useless. He would read poem after poem and analyze it for the class. It was boring, but his attitude was funny. He talked about death a lot, and told my class to call him Mr. Sunshine! haha
cool, cool, so very cool.
Dr. O is a very knowledgable man, and talks about writers in ways that relate them to what's going on today. Attendance is not mandatory, but there so many surprise quizzes that attendance is a must.
I think half of the class walked out of his office crying after our one on one meetings about our first paper.
This is the most pointless class I have ever taken. There are only 3 tests and no papers which sound great, but there are constant pop quizzes which are over unretainable reading. GOOD LUCK PASSING!
It's death if you plagairize. Not worth the risk.
He is a horrible professor! He definitely made my cry the other day after my tutorial!
I have Comp II with him. He is a horrible teacher. He is very random with his grading scale. He told me on one paper that I had a good understanding of the assignment and that I used good examples. Minus some grammer mistakes it was good. My grade...67.
Love hearing people complain about how hard college is. After two tours in Iraq, they don't know how good they've got it.
Probably the best teacher at UCM. Yes he will mark you down on things that may seem minor to you. But it has been about 10 years since I have had the privilege of having him as a teacher. They key is...make him laugh. I know this seems to go against his somber appearance. However, If you make him laugh you will have a great semester.Good guy
A lot of reading in class. Class consists of teacher going over reading you just read, very boring.
I learned more about critical thinking from the two courses I took from him than from all my other college courses combined.
He is generally a good guy. Most people don't get his very dry sense of humor.
Many people told me not take him, but I would recommend him because he makes you put effort and thought into your work and you actually leave with knowledge. That does not happen with many of the instructors Ihave had here.
I really liked the way he related what happened in olden times to what's going on today. Group work very helpful too.
It's been 8-10 years since I took this class; of my non-major profs, he is 1 of only 2 I distinctly remember. Hard? Yes. Make you think? Yup. I played devils advocate, fought back respectfully, & actually understood his humor. I think that helped, but this was still the hardest non-science class I have EVER taken. Make him respect you.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This prof should be fired, but he is tenured. He may have been better 10 years ago - but he is a waste of your tuition dollars and time.
There's a lot of students who hate Obertino, but he has high expectations. If you are genuinely interested in his lectures, he will notice. Frequent pop quizzes. Studying required. Suck it up.
Grades way to strickt.
This was the only class I looked forward to this semester. But the Greek stuff got kind of old.
This was the only class I looked forward to this semester. But the Greek stuff got kind of old.
just tell him some non offensive penguin jokes and everything will be just fine!
He's not helpful and he doesn't seem to care. He doesn't know his students and his dry sense of humor teeters on offensive.
Obertino is hands down the worst teacher on campus!!! AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!! If you're taking World Masterpieces be prepared for nonstop quizzes over random definitions that he gives, if one word is wrong then you probably wont get credit for it.
I am in World. I took about ten quizzes, got mostly As and Bs. The only definitions were extracredit. Yeah, this was a tough class. But I got As on my exams and I expect to get an A tomorrow. O challenged me and I succeeded.
I am in World. I took about ten quizzes, got mostly As and Bs. The only definitions were extracredit. Yeah, this was a tough class. But I got As on my exams and I expect to get an A tomorrow. .
The worst teacher that i have ever had. Very!! unwilling to help. Awkward teaching style. I frequently asked him for help and he continued to be strange and unresponsive. terrible teacher, very impersonal, a conflict avoider. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!!!
He doesn't care about how hard people try and he doesn't want to grade exams knowing who wrote them and how much effort they put into studying. I tried hard and stll got a C.
I don't like long works of writing, but he made them interesting by talking about things going on today. I improved my writing in this course. Tutorials were very helpful.
He is very smart man. The course was interesting but not easy. He does not spoon feed. A lot of reading.
I h8 2 many readings. I h8 lo grades 2.
I did good on some papers and quizzes and turned most papers in. But he wouldn't cut me any slack.
The grading system in this course is ridiculous. He takes off more points for guessing than what the question is originally worth. Plus he takes off points if you get extra credit wrong!
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD & Worst experience at UCM. He spent have the time talking about politics when he should've been talking about LITERATURE! Wasn't helpful, just made you feel stupid.
If your not a English major do not take this class. The teacher knows his stuff, but showed little care about the students. He has dry humor and his jokes and innuendos can become offensive. If your a republican than your a seed of evil by the comments he makes. If you love English and love work then by all means take him. You will read alot!!!
We talked about a lot of cool things. Made me think.
Knows his stuff. Doesn't care about his students. Very politically opinionated wish is rarely relevent is his class. Hard tests. You HAVE to read the literature to have a fighting chance to ace this class. I would not take him again.
Very intelligent and intriguing, but also difficult. I feel alot of favoritism towards students he already knew.
I agree with 10/14. I am learning alot but he is totally unfair to expect people to read the assignments if they want a good grade. If he cared about his students he would make the class easy to ace. Can be kinda funny--in a dry sort of way.
The prose part of the course was boring. The poetry is hard but he knows how to make it easy to understand. Group discussions were a good way to learn too.
He gave so much extra info on social, cultural, etc to what we read. He related what we were learning to current events too. A lot of reading, but most of it good
he plays favorites and you will know right away if you are one of them. he will make you feel stupid for asking questions, unles you are his favorite. if he does not like your writting style, you will not do well in his class. i suggest never taking him if at all possible....and i wish i would have read this before i took his class!!!!!
I think the integration of literature and writing helped me a more effective writers. Tutorials extremely helpful because we were advised in a one on one fashion.
The poetry section helped me expand my thinking abilities for when we had to write critical thinking papers later in the course. Direct feedback in conferences was very helpful.
The most outstanding teacher I've ever experienced. He's brilliant and provides so much background to all of the reading. His paper tutorials really helped me with my writing. I feel privileged to have him as a prof.
Do not take this professor. He expects you to write like William Shakespeare and his expectations are very high. This is just a regular composition II class but he takes it out to be as an advanced course. If you are currently enrolled bail out now and head to ANY professor but him!
A little scary at times--high standards. But a sense of humor too. Hard grader but he knows his stuff.
He is a very difficult teacher. You need to shrug off some things he says because they can be offensive. Attendance and reading the book assignments are a MUST! Quizzes are crucial for needed points. He has a very dry sense of humor. If you're serious about class he's a great professor.
This teacher is amazing. The class is tough, but only if you are used to slacking off. People say he is not helpful, but that is because students are used to having teachers do a lot of the work for them. He cautions students about the work load because slackers won't want to take it. He is considerate like that. He is funny and has strong opinions
Dr. Obertino was one of my favorite professors. The comments about his dry sense of humor and strong political opinions are accurate. If you are a more conservative person, fear not. I got along just fine with him and did well in the class; If you read all the materials and show a genuine interest in class discussion, you'll be fine.
Don't take him unless you have to
He gave a quiz the first week!!
Dr. Obertino has a bad reputation because students aren't willing to work for their grades in his class. Being an English major helps because he definitely grades tough, but coming out of that class with an A felt like I really deserved it.
Dr. Obertino is a hard man to like but his heart is in the right place. He tries to be 'funny' and usually just comes across as awkward. If you're lazy then don't take this class. If you actually want to learn something, then I highly recommend him.
He grades very harshly and gives mostly Cs. I have always been a very good writer, and I found his grading to be very difficult. If you're wanting a moderately easy A, don't take this course. Very dry sense of humor, very boring.
Wonderful Teacher. You have to read a lot, but it's worth it because you learn so much about the literature, but you also learn how it applies historically and to our modern world. Obertino really knows his stuff, and he always makes the class laugh. He gives a lot of extra credit, which really helps.
Not an ez grader. Drop whle u can.
If you aren't an english major, DO NOT take his class. Unless you can write everything completely correctly, and aren't wordy, you won't get any papers over a C. He also doesn't teach you anything about writing papers. So if you actually want to learn and not read and analyze poems and/or stories every day take another teacher.
He's a different kind of instructor. He makes you really work for the grade and grades harshly. He analyzes poems the first half of the semester, and gives quizzes on short stories the second half of the semester. You also get a week of tutorials after writing an in-class paper which happens every 3 weeks. Tries to be funny, but kinda awkward..
He is a little intimidating and kind of strict. But you will learn from him. His class is hard.
Worst professor I have ever had. First day, he tells the class that funerals are not an excused absence. Therefore, you will be deducted points for a very reasonable reason to be absent. Do not take him for this class.
He's an "instructor" not a "teacher". He's very opinionated and unpleasant - seems bitter. Grading of papers is arbitrary - no rubric - and even with only a couple minor remarks the highest paper grade I received was an 89%. Final is 10 vocab words you define. Aced it, squeaked by with a 90.25% (yay, A!) and he seemed irritated to say when I asked.
Does not use black board or tell you your progress until the very end. Several in class papers, and is a very harsh grader. He may be effective for English majors.
Very Terrible Professor. He grades way too harshly and does not give you any way to improve your scores on papers. Most of the papers are in class and he still expects you to write like Shakespeare only given 50 minutes. If you don't like poems get out of the class ASAP because some papers are based off of poems
He is a tough grader and expects a lot out of you but if you read everything you are supposed to read and show up to class you'll get an A and his Final is the easiest final I've ever taken
Dr. Obertino is extremely knowledgeable. He is a tough grader, and is particularly strict with this survey classes. He is, however very helpful and knows a lot about the subject. He also likes to bring pictures of cute animals before tests to give you a little morale-boost. I would recommend him to anyone who actually wants to learn.
