Dr. Onoda is one of the smartest instructers I kown. His workload is light. He gives online quizzes, labs, and tests (not cumulative though). He lectures the majority of the time, so you have to pay attention, he does not make the class hard, the class is just hard in itself. He communicates well (e-mail), he will help u if you need him to.
He's a very laid back guy. He doesn't pressure his students a lot, he leaves it up to you to do a good job in the class or not. He's very knowlegable and helpful. He may come off a little stiff at first, but if you get to know him he's a pretty nice guy. The clas requires a lot of studying, but it went at a pretty good pace.
Very easy person to work with and get along with. keeps class consistent and organized. No pop up surprises but predictable quizes that are easy once you get the idea of them. you could just read the book and pass. intelligent man w/ Northwestern and clinical expericence, retired. Doesn't BS students, he know's your grade matters.I got an A
He certainly keeps things interesting! Just make sure you sttend class and ask him questions. Sometimes you'll feel like he's not listening but just get over that. He's a great guy and very fair.
Dr. Onoda is very good at making things clear. It is necessary to read every chapter in your book and take notes. Online quizzes are 99% from the book. Tests are generally short answer or essay questions. You must type your own labs. Pay attention and attend every class, read the book and you'll definitely pass.
TERRIBLE CLASS, he is one of THE MOST BORING people ever to teach a class. He gets so off track at times it is utterly painful. The tests were pretty easy but the online quizzes were not that easy, they questions are very intricate. Not to mention if you ask him a question he usually looks at you like you are an idiot. Don't do it!
excelent insrtuctor willing to help students if needed. I like his humor he reminded me alot of my best friends father. To the previous person maybe you are an idiot.
Prof.Onoda is very helpful, his assignments were easy and pretty straight-forward. His Quizes were easy, either multiple choice (which he just copy from the textbook, so just memorize the answers),or essay. He is pretty easy in grading it by looking just at the keywords. my suggest is just make sure to read the book and get the basic idea.A++ Prof
I must agree this guy stinks. He also teaches advanced classes, but in basic BIO he is unhelpful, treats people like they're idiots; confusing labs, some trick Q's on quizzes/tests. Lectures are boring; doesn't cover much material so u waste time in class when u could be busy reading the book. The LEAST fun BIO class/teacher I have EVER taken! Boo!
Interesting and engaging class. We had a lot of on-line quizzes and it took 1-2 hours to get prepared for each of them. It was quite easy. Exams and classes are simple too.
****ING AWESOME PROFESSOR, lectures are sometimes mono but that comes with the subject. He definitely spices things up as you go along in the course... I am a guy so I don't rate another guys apearance.
Dr. O iz a freakn man!!!i had my first semester, staight outta high school, which was also his first semester in truman, he is so easy and at the same time, ur bound to learn...look out for his tests though, if je gives multiple choice they are like 100 questions
He is HORRIBLE!!! Run if you can. He reads straight from slides which can be found in book so no need to come or take notes....reviews are useless because he always tests on stuff he swears wont be on the test. Very standoffish.
This teacher is good. He has a slightly morbid sense of humor, which may have come from his years as a researcher. He is very clear and direct, though, he does make asking questions a little intimidating. He is a really awesome teacher if you learn well on your own. He does not give out grades, you must earn them.
Very helpful......
He was great! Take him.
Relatively easy, lots of focus on "eighth grade material."
THIS TEACHER IS WEIRD!!! he will get straight to the point but wont help u thoroughly understand whats goin on... u really have to keep up for urself. doesn't accept late assignment at all and doesn't believe in make up quizzes or exams pretty tuff and weird lookin guy his temper is cool overall.
awesome teacher, kept it interesting, talks a lot about his college days, his accomplishments, talks about A and B etc. students. he picks his favorite students, lots of extra credit opportunities i.e:quizzes, tests, attendance. sit in the front row for brownie points :)...he says those are his A students.. study and you will be fine.
great teacher
Dr. Onoda is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He can be quite intimidating at first but once you sit through a couple of lectures you'll grow to love him. Highly intelligent, loves teaching. I honestly felt like I should have been paying a lot more for this class given his high quality of teaching. Very glad he chooses to teach at Truman!
One of the BEST teachers anyone can ever have! Why? Reasons: 1. Exceptional professionalist 2. Famous 4 his research and work (google him!) 3. Gives u a lot of info u will always remember 4. Very strict, but helpful 5. Extremely educated and interesting, never boring
Great teacher, love his style!!!
Very interesting. Dry and sarcastic sense of humor, but everything ties into the subject if you know what to listen for and remember. Attendance is somewhat stressed but as long as you can keep up with what the subject and lab is you should be fine. =)
Probably one of the few amazing teachers at Truman. He made me love Bio. His jokes might be dry to others but i think he's funny. He is very blunt and opinionated that you can't help but admire his character and personality. Definitely take his class to fulfill one of the geneds. You will not regret it, trust me.
Most people like him because they understand his lectures and love to read the the textbook.Another plus about this course is the online quizzes that are nothing his lectures or reading material. Good Luck to whomever takes him. However in my opinion if you don't know anything about bio don't take this professor. :(
Not an easy A by any means, but a rewarding one. Online quizzes, Lab reports and in class tests keep you very business. I wouldn't recommend taking this class with a heavy workload.
Dr. Onoda is a wonderful professor. He has a wealth of real world as well as academic experiences to share. Bio is not easy, it is a great deal of work, but is worth is! Very helpful professor, worth his weight in gold!
Yah, horay! for a good teacher! He is funny and fair and CLEAR about what he expects. He does like to kill things off as examples in his lecture a lot. Really enjoyed the summer nutrition class and miss it.
Very good teacher, he lots of good experience for you to learn from. Smart, funny and respectful, which seems RARE in the city schools sciences arena. Really good experience!
Dr. O has his class somewhat outlined well. He has room for adjustments. He talks to you like you an idiot a LOT. He does have a lot of smart remarks, he sidetracks sometimes but gives good REAL WORLD examples of things we are learning. Overall it was a decent class. He gives you a basic run down of what you need to do and NOTHING more. He gives yo
My opinion of him changed over the course of the semester. Great professor. Rude at times, but he knows what he's talking about. I highly recommend him.
He was great! He taught very clear but you need to read alot on your own to get an A on the exame. He will give you extra credit too if the exame is hard. I think it's fair but not easy A but I got A!!
Very helpful to serious students. Inflates grades a lot for his Truman college class but this allows students to learn a large amount of material if they want to while still keeping the difficulty at a community college level. One of the most intelligent professors I have had, and he definitely knows it...Highly recommend.
Dr. Onoda is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He clearly cares about his students, and provides opportunities to earn additional points to ensure you learn and to help your overall grade. He has a wonderfully fun, morbid sense of humor. His class is accessible to all levels of students and he also teaches you how to study effectively.
Dr.Onoda is the best Biology teacher. Eventhough summer class is tough, he made it interesting and fun. I highly recommend him. He made everyone learn a lot and he is very fair.
Very intelligent guy, has a lot of experience in the field. He explains things very well; so it's a very high quality of instruction, better than what you'll find at 4-yr colleges. His tests are kind of difficult though, make sure you study; the class is not a piece of cake. He is very helpful when you ask him. Clarifies things really well.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!I just strted the fall semester and because i took biology before I didn't worry that i'm going to have any issues with this class. For the first lab he gave NO instructions and required to be 6 page length. You don't learn anything in the class-he is besides the subject. The worst teacher ever. Please don't take him.
I do not recommend this teacher to anyone. His exams are very difficult. The quizes are online and timed for half-hour with 24 questions. Once you answer the questions, you can not go back and see them.I didn't like this class at all.
awesome teacher! Learned a lot in this class!
he is the worst techer ever, he makes you feel you are an idiot, no extra credit, not helpful at all, just wasting of money and time. i will not recomand him to no body.
He's got a ton of experience in the health care field, so even just talking to him after class is enlightening! Highly recommended, especially if you are going into nursing! He will clearly teach you things that will help you all the way thru organic chem and micro so it is difficult but BELIEVE ME, you will thank him when you are done!
Organized. Knows his stuff. Fair with grading and makeup assignments. Not the most useful person to engage in a conversation with
Tough, but fair. Moves quickly, but not unreasonably so. Open to questions after class. And will work with you if you need the help. Laid back and intelligent.
Outstanding teacher. In his lectures he tells you specifically what to look out for on quizes and tests, as well as giving you real-world experiences. He is moderately arrogant, but he's earned it (he's a Ph.D M.D., and google dr. james onoda cancer), and if you don't take his demeanor personally you'll find he's very approachable and helpful.
He's great. It's a hard class but he gives so many bonus points that even if you bomb the tests (which I did) you can still get an A (which I did) Don't drop him if you think your failing! talk to him to see how your doing because you might think your failing but your probably not. Don't miss class.
Dr. Onoda is awesome. He's an excellent teacher and if you notice, even though there isn't a time in class for question asking, he makes an effort to get to know everyone. He has a lot of experience and can teach you something and he tells you exactly how and what to study. He hands everyone the skills to receive an A
He wasn't so friendly, but that didn't effect his teaching ability.
This teacher is excellent! You will learn so much from him. He is very smart, very friendly and very interested in helping you achieve what you want. HIGHLY recommended!
I thought this class would be the best. i am still taking this class and i think i regret ever steeping foot there. the teacher is not friendly at all.he is a little strict on students and that doesnt help. i hope i enjoy the rest of the semester with him but i still regret ever meeting onoda
His teaching style is ok but he could go more into detail and make it easier to understand since it is bio. He has a really bad attitude and thinks community colleges are the worst so its kind of ironic that he still teaches at one. He makes insulting jokes toward students. I would recommend taking someone else if possible.
Dr Onoda is an excelent teacher. He knows his material from bottom to top in every detail. He has done a lot in his life that prepared him 4 his hobby, which is teaching Bio. He likes Med students bc he was 1 be4 and he wants every1 to accuratly master everything he teaches.Prep 4 tests with online quizzes, labs, his lec, and book.Do diag 2 stud!
Dr. Onoda is a great teacher. He knows the material front to back and knows the answer to every question asked. Can be an easy class if you pay attention in class and study ALOT from the book. The only con is that he is unapproachable, kind of rude to students, which can discourage those in need of his help. Attitude aside, I recommend for bio 100%
This guy's a little rude and not the most helpful outside of class, but he's a great teacher. You knew what was expected of you, he followed the order of the text and also added little stories about concepts in the text that made things more interesting that you can use in conversations w/other smart people.
He was a difficult professor BUT he was very clear with grading and how his class was going to run. Honestly, I thought he was helpful and knowledgeable in all aspects of biology. Take him IF you are willing to study because his exams are not easy. I did learn a lot from his class though and I really enjoyed it.
Great instructor. You might find that his tough at first, but as long as you do your job as a student you'll be fine. Show up on time, do your labs, pay attention to his lectures, and everything will count to the end of the class. Highly recommended! A+ instructor!
Onoda is very knowledgeable. But he is very rude. He hates helping students after class. He is unapproachable. Only take this class with him if you know how to study and take test. Otherwise DON'T. He is not helpful when you need help. He will make you feel like an idiot in front of class.
THE RUDEST & most UNAPPROACHABLE prof. He HUMILIATED students in front of other people. We feared approaching him bc he'd blow them off, shush them or do some 'get away' motion. I took this class even after reading other neg comments because I figured it wouldnt be that bad. trust me, dont believe these ratings. U will hate him and hate the class!!
Great Professor. He can be tough at times but he is great at what he teaches and you will definitely learn a lot. He will prepare you for Bio 226 and 227. I would have taken him again if he thought any other class besides 121.
I took Dr. Onoda for both Bio 121 and college success and he was very hard. He could be kind of standoffish and not approachable. Take his class but with caution. I can say that he is fair with the online tests and lets you retake them at midterm and finals. He does not teach you how to answer the essay questions and sometimes picky about the labs
He's a tough teacher but it's worth it because he really teaches the class.
Professor Onoda is very smart; I learned so much from his class. He knows his materials very well. He's also fair in terms of grading. I got a D on midterms, but I never gave up; I kept moving forward and studied harder. In the end I got an A. So if you will take his class make sure that you'll take it seriously.
He push you to teach yourself, but he does not qualify to be a teacher.
Not helpful at all.
Dr Onoda is a tough one. Since I was unfortunate to be stuck with Pre-Med students in my class, it did not help he held us up to their standards and yes he blabed about how Pre-Meds are the better students... of course they are going to remember a lot more biological info than typical students or Nursing majors... but he's an okay teacher over all.
Very good professor. I think he has a personality that not many students relate with including myself, however he explains well during lectures and he tells you everything you need to know to earn a good grade on the essays and labs. Just listen to his lectures and pay attention to the diagrams in the book, he focuses on those a lot.
Professor Onoda seems like a mean person at first but if you're nice to him and get on his good side, he will help you. If you ask questions in class, he can be rude and tell you to look in your book. Overall, he's alright. I suggest to take him if you have a good foundation on biology, it will be an easy A.
I Would take him again. His lectures are full of funny stories and examples. Pay attention, he will tell you exactly what is important. It's just that simple. One on one, it is true he is not warm and fuzzy, but he's extremely helpful. So If you need Cuddling then find a different professor. It will be your loss.
Very tough professor!!!!
Dr. Onoda is an excellent professor. If you actually pay attention he literally tells you what to study, what questions will be on the test, and how to get a good grade. Doesn't take questions during lectures, may come off cold but we are there to learn not make friends. He is very smart and helpful. I recommend you have a small base in BIO.
Loved his lectures! They are very long but he does a great job at explaining and giving examples. He will not take questions during lectures so just listen most likely your question will be answered. He is very clear on questions you may encounter on upcoming exams (no reason why you should get answers wrong)
He is vey kind and helpful. His exams are tough, but he tells you what you need to study for exams. He cares a lot about his student.
Dr. Onoda is no B.S. and he will tell it like it is. He's pretty good but he is also tough on his students. If you have any premeds in your class, watch out he will make your class feel as if you were a pre-med student yourself. In all, he's wise cracking and funny. Grades; He's never one for being wishy-washy, do the work or drop the class.
He's a great explainer, his lectures actually make sense to me. Don't skip a single class though, you'll regret it. His grading standards are tough, and the beginning the year was confusing for me, but once you know what's expected of you it's almost enjoyable. ;)
Lectures are long covering a lot of info. He doesn't linger on chapters and tends to go through 1-2 a day. He is clear on what to expect so you could miss a class and not worry about a spontaneous assignment. Does a great job breaking down the info in the text making it more understandable, so miss class at your own risk. Funny knowledgeable guy.
Mr. Onoda is old-school. He's a good professor for a difficult course. His words are GOLD when it comes to doing well on the multiple choice/short answer tests. Make sure you read the book because you'll be missing out on tons of information that won't be covered in the lecture. Make sure you sit in the front to be apart of his funny stories
Intimidating at first but if you make the effort, he comes around. His lectures are VERY informative and are almost word for word what he asks on exams. He can't see or hear very well, so sitting in front of class gives a chance for him to know and recognize you as well as an opportunity for you to ask questions. Take good notes- they will save you
Dr. O is very informative and knowledgable. He will literally give you all the information you need for the tests in his lectures. You must take good notes, listen carefully and work hard for this class. Taping his lectures can be helpful. He does not take breaks. He gives you a lot of information fast, so I found taping his lectures helpful.
Dr. O is super dry and intense. He likes to try and intimidate students. He wont answer questions in class, even if you have your hand up for an hour. This class is extremely tough, as are his tests. Prepare for extremely long exams. He is unclear in class and moves quick, so is your responsibility to organize your notes and learn.
His Lectures were amazing He is a great teacher to me. Don't skip a single class though or You feel like you miss a piece of a puzzle. He kind of intimidate me un the beggining but I never dropped the class Just put in practice your academic skills and you will fine. Always ask for help if you understand something He will be there for you.
I loved Dr. O!! He is very knowledgeable! If you listen to the lectures he will tell you what to expect on the test. Do the homework, take the online quizzes, and read the chapter and study your notes and you will do well in his class. I only wished he would teach 226 and 227 I think he would be amazing at explaining all of that information.
Dr. O is pretty tough for a Bio 121 class, however, I'm glad I had him opposed to a prof that was an easy A. If you need a prof that will help a lot he's not the one for you. You either know it or you dont. I must say I liked that about him. He does explain everything thoroughly if you don't understand it still then science is not for you.
Dr. O is a great professor. Old school kind of guy. Comes across as intimidating at first but he grows on you. Don't skip a class; pay attention to his lectures, he pretty much tells you everything you need to know for tests. I recommend to record his lectures, sit close to the front of the class, and reach out to him if you need any help.
He will really make you work for your grade, but during his lectures he will really take his time to go over a subject and ask questions to make sure his students understand the material. He's also hilarious and one of the coolest professors I've ever had.
Had Dr.O for BIO121. He's an old school no BS kind of guy that doesn't like to repeat himself. Don't skip class and pay attention to the notes he gives - he pretty much tells you exact test materials. Take advantage of the extra credit he may give out (he stated that there was no EC but ended up giving out over 10% by semester end). Learned a lot
He's very clear on what he wants from your works (lab reports, exams), what he'll be including on the tests and exams, and the way he lectures. He replied to my emails quickly and clearly cared for me and my classmates. He makes sure you know and understand very well the lessons. If not, he takes the time to make sure you get it. One of the best.
He's very strict at grading test questions. His explanations are not always clear and also likes to talk quietly.
This professor sucks! He only talks about "pre med students", and doesnt care much for other students who take other courses. In addition, he told us that we're his guinea pig, preaches a lot about academic skills. Be sure to read a lot through this course and write an essay with diagrams for 35 minutes, and do an oral presentations individually.
At the beginning of the year I thought about dropping his class because he was so tough. His toughness only made me want to fight harder. He is very clear about what will be expected of you. There is lots of work and don't ever miss a lecture. You need to hear every word. I would take him for all my science courses if I could. He is tough but fair
Take him if: going into healthcare/sciences & you want to learn. He's a M.D and is very knowledgeable. He teaches "academic skills" that if you follow will change your way of studying forever, in a good way. His class is all lecture except lab days. If you want an A, this class is challenging but very worth the effort. B's and C's are easy to get
Dr Onoda is a teacher that wants you to give him what he wants for example if he gives a test he expects you to write everything he taught you. Attendance is compulsory, online homeworks, lab reports, class tests both scantron and essay papers and a presentation. If you like to study or if bio is your best subject you can take him.
The challenge was really only in the amount of information. He does an exceptional job on preparing you for what you'll be tested on, and spends class time teaching numerous academic skills to ensure you're capable of doing well if you put in the work. But you need to know the material inside and out, so set aside time to study.
Seriously one of the best teachers I've had. He is one of the most understanding professors I have encountered. If he thinks there is an unfair question on the quiz or exam, he will give the points back to everyone and explain the problem thoroughly. Lectures can be a little boring but chemistry isn't fun. Really cares about his students.
Absolute best teacher I've ever had! He's extremely knowledgeable, very intelligent, and amazing lectures. The class was really challenging, make sure to do all the homework and the extra credits are really helpful. I learned so much not just about biology. I wish he had other Bio or Micro.
Dr. O is amazing! If you want to be inspired and are up for a challenge, take his class! If you are trying to get an easy A and don't want to push yourself, this class is not for you! But if you really care about learning and your future, you MUST take Dr. O's class. He gives invaluable foundation for your future and academic skills are a must!
He's very knowledgeable and definitely challenges you. He's the kind of teacher to teach you to teach yourself. Not an easy A. I don't like how he has quizzes every weekend though .. often too soon after just starting a chap..
Dr Onoda is very hardworking. He answers emails out of office hours, even at weekends. He's compassionate; he permitted me to complete my essays out of class. He likes his job very much and never run out of energy. He's also very punctual and smart.
He looks and acts intimidating at first but he's very nice. You have to put alot of time and effort to get an A. The essays and oral presentation are easy as long as you give time. If you do great on the essays and presentation, you have a great chance of getting an A and you can prepare at home. I learn alot from him (bio and life lessons).
I miss Dr. O. a LOT! he is a genius.
Amazing but LONG lectures. He takes no breaks. Tests are hard. He knows the material very well. You will learn a lot if you take him. Group lab reports, oral presentation, weekly online quizzes. Exams are scan-tron, short answer, and essay type. TIPS: record lectures with a voice recorder and if your an introvert or shy don't sit up front.
oh my oh my At first I wasn't into the class I have 2 kids and it's challenging but this is it for any class: attend the class , listen, take notes and study you will pass any class he explains really well he made me love biology i will follow the skills he thought us in class for future classes Thanks Dr O I recommend him
LOVE Dr. Onoda, he's so inspiring and encouraging, but get ready to work in his class!! It's worth it, I'm taking Human Anatomy and Physiology this semester, and I feel so well prepared because of the learning skills I gained in Dr. Onoda's class.
BEST TEACHER AT TRUMAN!!! I mean that with complete sincerity. He challenged the class very well but also was very fair. His class is very challenging but he explains everything so well!
This is one of the classes that requires u to pay attention. The grading is based solely on a points system I believe its 900 points or so to pass , so even if u dont do well on the test just generate the points u do get.. He gives you extra points for attendance . As long as you do good on the quizzes, the essays , presentation . U will be fine.
To be honest, hes the best professor Ive ever had. I learned a lot from him. Hes a little intimidating sometimes and always talks about his med students and his A students. If you really wanna learn about the material, choose his class. I learned a lot from him. His teaching method was very effective. He is the best science teacher, trust me.
Dr O, I wish you a new year everyday is wonderful day, filled with happiness, health, love and good luck, that are forever in your life, never stop. The class wasn't easy, though it certainly is worth taking it. It raised one valuable philosophy of life: There's no success without hardship.
His class made me a stronger student. By the end I felt as though I has a good foundation in biology. Not an easy A, but a really worthwhile one.
There's one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving,Rm2975. Keep your face always towards the sunshine-Dr O. Then knowledge and wisdom will fall on you. Learning never worn out my mind, but lack of Biology Alert Einstein, Dr O, Truman is like a tree without fruit and blossoms.
Kudos to Dr O, who richly deserves recognization.
While a very knowledgeable and caring professor, his 3.5 hour lectures were, at most 50% material and the rest was filled with dire warnings that no one would pass, that we're bad students, and that we need to know these things in detain-instead of telling us more detail. Incredibly frustrating, expect to spend time studying more at home to make up
The letter A is excellent! It simply is the best. Without Dr O, you could not get an A on a test. No one like him know you well. Lets appreciate, admire, and clap this teacher and letter A.
He's a shelter from the cold wind and in darkness.
I like this professor. His every single move displays the mechanics of wisdom. If he wants to talk to you, you are one of the smartness.
Dr. Onoda was extremely knowledgeable and enjoyable to listen to his lectures. He can be a bit intense and blunt, but I found this refreshing in an environment where so many people are afraid to step on toes. The material can be heavy, but record the lectures and listen to them again to ensure your notes are thorough. This got me over 100% in class
Please register Dr Os class. He seems rude, but actually a very kind person. You will learn different diseases and cancers for the presentation assignment in class.
He's kind of rude, that's the gist of it. He's a good teacher, he knows his stuff, but he degrades his students big tine. He thinks students at Truman think they have no study skills for tests and the like, though to his credit it lessened throughout the semester. I don't think he should be teaching people at this level though.
Professor Onoda sometimes does come off a little rude/mean, but he's only doing it to make sure that you are prepared for whatever major that you are going into. Other than that, he is a good professor and he explains his lectures very clearly, even more clearer than the book. You do have to put in a good amount of time and effort into the class.
The best professor I will probably have in my life. I am so glad I took his class. I didn't like him at first because he was all about scaring students and saying how we didn't have academic skills. The things I learned in this class (not just biology) I will always remember. I'm so glad I took his class. Dr. Onoda is an amazing human being.
Dr. O is an excellent professor. He made Biology one of my favorite subjects. You will however have to earn your grade. He is stern but he is fair. Read your textbook and study what he says to study and youll be fine.
Dr. Onoda is one of a kind. He is lecture and book heavy, but gives a serious outline of all of his tests. Vocab is key. His lectures can get a little dull, but if you catch him on a good day he has some cool stories. Don't take this class if you just need the credit!
