DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE FOR ORGANISMAL BIOLOGY! WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN!
I hate him with a passion! I am a bio major and he makes me want to change my major. He looks extremely unprofessional, and the first day of class he used as a soapbox to preach is liberal atheistic ideals to insult and isolate his class.
This is the worst prof I have ever taken! Avoid him at all cost!!! He is not only rude, he's mean too.
He is a very intelligent man, but a very bad teacher. His lectures are unclear and scattered. His tests are ridiculously hard, and too long to finish in the time given. DONT TAKE HIM IF U WANT TO PASS.
Oh my goodness!! This man is VERY HARD! He preaches his ways and basically tells you that if you don't believe these you will fail his class. His tests are LONG; you don't have time to finish them. I DO NOT recommend taking his class.
Dr.Ott is awesome! He provides all lecture notes and keeps his lectures entertaining. He usually puts up a tough front @ the beg., but he is really cool. Known as a weed out class, if you stay in and go to all classes you will pass!! Dr.Ott is GREAT!
This teacher was extremely difficult to understand. His lectures were geared more towards evolution than organismal biology. He didn't follow the syllabus and only had one major test! He was also VERY biased and slams any views that are not exactly like his. I would NOT recommend this teacher!
Although his lectures are interesting, they are not helpful in passing the class. His graded assignments are very difficult for a freshman class and his test are 150 questions and VERY involoved, no multiple choice here. I got an A in the lab and a D in the lecture. I am a 3.4 GPA student, don't tak
This class is hard when you take Ott. Lectures are interesting, if you believe in God he might be too offensive for you. Tests are way too long to finish, assignments are harder than they need to be. I've heard other teachers are a lot easier and cover more material.I got an A in the lab and a D in the class giving me a C overall and my GPA is 3.75
If you want to get a good grade in this class, study from is notes, and dont spend much time with the textbook unless to reinforce the subject. Make sure to practice his problems that are provided in lab and in class, and be able to do them quickly! I spent little time on this class, and got a B, many failed! Yes, he is an athiest! Deal with it! For you young students of faith, don't let this keep you from persuing the sciences. Evolution and Religion can co-exist. Many scientists go to church on sunday!
I really liked Dr. Ott. I seriously thought I hated his class until I decided to work harder. I went into his office ALL THE TIME asking for help. And then I realized that he really doesn't want me to fail. He tried every way possible to get me to pass. He is a very dedicated teacher & one of my favorites professors @ TSU. AND I HATE BIOLOGY....but he was a damn good teacher.
Dr. Ott was extremely interesting for the 2nd fundamental bio class, and focused 98% on evolution in his lectures. great sarcasm, smart-ass comments and jokes, about religion and in-a-nutshell-Texan-ideology. great professor, who knows more about what he teaches than any other prof i've had in three years. u gotta love biology, though,n study hard.
The man has his views, and they are hilarious! Ott is a very, very smart person. Some people don't realize that. They go through Organismal and say, "That was hard!", but Ott is just trying to make critical thinkers of the up and coming scientists (something there is a lack of), so if you cannot think for yourself, you probably should not take him.
Dr.Ott is EXTREMELY smart..almost too smart. His test are really hard, he says to know the concepts for the test but then the test has nothing to do w/ concepts so you have no idea what to expect for the test & he doesnt give any type of review. I know I'll never take him again, hopefully i pass his class this time!
Dr. Ott is really pushing the limits of evolution vs. faith in an educational environment. I find his comments and constant contrast between faith and evolution to be completely out of line. Not to mention his unprofessional behavior, along with his rude and demeaning comments. I would not recommend this professor to anyone.
Funny and obviously very smart, Ott was a really cool prof. The class was tough and definately requires some work put into it. After the first exam about half the class dropped out. I really enjoyed it and will probably take another class with him later on.
He is a hard but helpful professor. Not many people will get an A (or even pass) his class, but you will learn the material. He is very helpful out of class. He comes off kind of rough, making jabs at groups in lecture, but he is hilarious and nice once you get to know him. Take him if you really want to learn, and don't mind getting a low grade.
Oh my goodness, I love Dr. OTT. Of course he is hard! He is like a perfect COLLEGE professor, and challenges his students to actually learn the material instead of memorize. If you want to learn something, definitely take him. He also has a good sense of humor, and I can't wait to take his evolution course.
If u are a freshman do not take this class. Extremely hard. It doesn't matter if u think ur a great student... he will prove u wrong. Not evern 10% of the students passed his class when i took it. not approachable and his test should just be in another language cause they are WAY HARD. take Gabor but she isn't easy. but better
Dr. Ott is the epitome of a Biology Professor. He's a brilliant man, irreverent, and excellent teacher. I made a B by the skin of my teeth, but he is incredible. If you want real biology and not just looking for an A, take him.
Extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. I learned a lot from him and can't wait to take more of his classes! In addition he is VERY entertaining!! Those who find him offensive are generally misconstruing his comments and are over-defensive about their inability to couple their religion with science.
I will say this about Ott...you will discover if you really want to go to med/dental school. They say there are classes that are gatekeepers, and his was one of them. He can be very rude and is extremely arrogant, but you will learn biology or you will fail. Review your tests after they are graded. The final was all previous tests combined.
The way he tought the class kept it intersting. The online homework was for me a real drawback as it was very tedious. His tests are hard but if you go review your tests it will make the final a bit easier.
Dr Ott is very knowledgable of the multiple subjects within the course. His first test is easy, his second test destroys people, and his third test is in between. The three tests are your only grades. He is arrogant and can be difficult to approach as he may help you or make fun of you in a subtle manner. I was one of the few who made an A.
Everyone hates him because he is such an advocate for evolution. Keep in mind he is a senior level evolution professor. But he knows what he is talking about, and he is extremely intelligent. Talks about hunting a lot, but he is extremely humane. Great professor.
His tests are really hard; a lot of questions don't make sense. Attendance is not mandatory but he does give out in-class quizzes at unexpected times. He also covers subjects that are not even in the textbook, so it is wise that you show up in class, actively listen in his lectures, and take some good notes as well as to what he is saying.
Amazing Professor! Very intelligent and passionate about his field of study. His tests are difficult, but ig you study and read the book before class, you should have an easier time following along. Overall a very open-minded, inspiring teacher.
Dr Ott takes a lot of heat in here, however he pushes you to make sure that you REALLY understand the information. He isn't easy and I watched 100 students bomb his class because they complained, slept, or cheated instead of studied. If you are looking for a floater class or teacher, go somewhere else. If you want to learn something, take Dr Ott.
A small handful of people will do well in this class. Most will fail. You must really learn the concepts to succeed- not memorize. Avoid this class unless you're completely devoted or already well versed in biology.
I felt he didn't explain things all that well and he also was very unclear as to the material that we needed to know to make a decent grade
I had Ott for BIO 1331 he wasn't easy at all infact I barely made a C in the class. He was able to keep my attention, but I was one of the few who got a seat in the front! All in all a good teacher, not really approachable but knows what he is talking about.
THIS IS A WEED OUT CLASS. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does give random quizzes. You will have to buy MasteringBiology as well as the textbook. This is a very difficult course. You have been warned.
A definite weed out class so BEWARE!! Basically memorizing definitions and key points and such for his exams will NOT do you much. Evolution is a really complex subject so he expects you to apply abstract thinking and also expects you to invest a good mount of your time with this course..
Dr. Ott is a wonderful professor for the dedicated. He teaches 1331 like it's an Evolution course, which I loved. Religious people/people of faith were often offended by what he taught, but I wonder why they expected a Biology course not to challenge their beliefs. He gives pop quizzes. MasteringBiology will help a lot. Keep up. Attend. Study.
WEED OUT CLASS. Ott teaches as if he is speaking to senior-level biologists. He often goes off on tangents and is difficult to follow. You can forget about making an A on his tests, much less pass them. He's not a bad guy, but his class is extremely difficult.
The hardest class I have ever taken! I feel like no matter how hard I study, I am never prepared for the test. His tests are soooo hard! This techer does not even have a 50% pass rate!! Avoid if you can!
HARDEST CLASS EVER! Homework: easy-medium but not helpful for the test. Pop Quizzes: not enough time to take it, work with groups, grades super hard/picky, grade distribution is not equal, Exams: all lecture based, hard, tricky, long, not enough time. Final: hard, very long, not enough time, surprise essay! Avoid at all cost!!!
WEED OUT CLASS! but very interesting if you care. Also, take functional bio before this class.
Ott is only difficult if you don't put in any effort. Attendance is not mandatory, but he when attendance is low he'll throw out a pop quiz. He's also a great lecturer and can be pretty funny. Be sure to keep up with Mastering Biology because it is very useful and a big part of your grade. Overall, he is a great professor and I would recommend him.
Dr. Ott is a very intelligent man, so intelligent that he at times forgets that we are just beginners in Biology. However, you will learn if you expect to get atleast a B. Getting an A is very difficult, however it is possible. Remember he is all about teaching, and will do whatever it takes. Even if that means a surprise essay on the final.
I have Mixed feelings about Dr. Ott. In his evolution class we talked about many of the important concepts in evolutionary biology. I enjoyed his heavy handed approach to the topic, this is a Senior level evolution class. His lectures were enjoyable, and relevant. I left with a deeper understanding of concepts but felt I knew less than at the start
Don't take! Teaches doctorate level material to undergrads. Only 3% of his classes make A's. Doesn't answer questions, can't admit he's wrong.
HE BASICALLY SPEAKS SPANISH
He is funny, witty, intelligent but a below-par teacher. He cares a great deal for his job, but very little for the ones he teaches it to, which in my eyes is very sad. I do not like him or his way of teaching.
To put it simply, Dr. Ott expects a lot out of you. He gives you assigned reading that is not from the text book and is usually posted online, so no need to buy it. He is very straight forward and his lectures are very common sense sort of stuff. His exams, if you take good notes, are main ideas off the lecture and are not tricky at all. Just study
Does not allow students to see their exams. Gets upset if you arrive at his office 15 minutes earlier than office hours Be ready to be lectured like a kid if you have questions Willing to teach and answers questions 3 exams and no extra credit GR bas on high score Must grasp material to pass Interesting lecture Hard on students and himself RUN!
This professor made my life hell. His class was the first science course I took my first semester of college. I studied his outlines and read the book, yet did not do well on the exams. They were EXTREMELY tricky, with many intentional misleading answers. To this day, I cringe thinking about him. Dry sense of humor. Interesting lectures. RUN.
Dr. Ott is by far the best biology professor I have ever had. He expects a lot of his students, which may be intimidating for any who take him for BIO 1131. That said, he is a great lecturer who is very clear and he distills complex topics into very simple and easy to follow principles. Prepare to be challenged and possibly offended (religion).
Dr. Ott is an awful freshman bio teacher. I'm a Micro major, A JUNIOR, and I'm struggling. In all my years I've never taken such a hard class. It's ridiculous. The tests are IMPOSSIBLE for a freshman course, and poorly written. Take ANYONE ELSE. I would be willing to take his Evolutionary Bio course, since he's very passionate about it
DO NOT TAKE THIS BIO CLASS. He tends to forget he is teaching FRESHMAN. I went to EVERY CLASS and still didn't pass. My highest test grade was a 74. He makes no sense in his lectures. He teachers as if you have an excellent background in Biology. Everyone fails his class. He claims he "curves test grades" but I don't think he truly does.
Dr. Ott clearly knows his stuff. Many of my classmates complained about the rigor of the class, but to be perfectly honest many of them didn't even show up for his lectures. He's blunt with his unbiased, scientific viewpoint and doesn't walk on eggshells around religious students. Show up, study, and be prepared to swallow your pride and biases.
He seemed to think that our Organismal Biology class was his evolution class and nothing he lectured about lined up with what we were told to read. He allows no make up work so if you miss, you miss. He will also call you out if you try to get up and leave during lecture. He was funny at times but that did not help his teaching.
Lectures are very hard to follow, does not take the time to explain and tells you to look it up when you go home. Goes off on many tangents. Only two tests and 50 participation points plus a final. The 50 comes from some group work and in-class quizzes he gives when attendance is especially low. Make your life easier and take another prof.
I went to Texas State in the fall of 2013 as a Biology major and this class literally made me change my major. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. WEED OUT CLASS. He is extremely intelligent but to a freshman who isn't a Biologist, you will have no idea what he is saying. His overall pass rate on exams is very low and passing the class would be a miracle! RUN!!!
Words alone cannot describe how appalling this man is as a professor. Get out now.
Most difficult Organismal Bio lecture by far. 5 exams and a final + online homework. There is NO extra credit. Lecture does not usually coorelate with assigned textbook readings and he will go off on tangents that are broad. If you don't take Bio seriously or don't have the time to dedicate don't take this class. Demanding, challenging & difficult.
The material was too much in depth for it to be an introductory course. His lectures are so long (94+ slides sometimes) that's its nearly impossible to memorize everything. This man was by far the worst professor I had. Do the online homework as it boosts your grade, and go to the SI Sessions! Be prepared to study as test are based on lectures!
Dr. Ott makes his class much more difficult than it needs to be. He showed us grade statistics for his class the semester prior to fall 2016. It was something like half the people who take his class fail it, and only 15% get an A or a B. His lectures need to be more focused, like he goes in depth on relatively unimportant subjects. Gives Curves
RUN! 300 points 3 exams, 50 points assignments etc. Expects a LOT out of undergrads and yet does not explain well. Lectures are boring and only 10% make As and Bs and almost 50% Ds and Fs. Take someone else he will ruin your GPA. Will NOT allow to see exams so you don't know where you stand.
His class requires a LOT OF reading and his exams are VERY tricky. This one class is equal to 3 difficult classes. If you work butt off you may pass with a C or even B but forget about the A. He believes all students are at the same level. Not true since many were older and some may even be retaking.
Takes pride in failing students. Does not teach the material at the level he tests on his exams. You can't see your tests so you can't learn from your mistakes. Can be rude and condescending. Even if you are all in it is hard to pass this class. To get a C you work like you want 100%. The highest score sets the bar so no real curve.
One of my favorite professors. His class is tough because he's blunt & tells you how it is, but if you're genuinely interested in the subject then the class really pays off. He doesn't get as much credit as he should. If you put effort into his class, it's not as hard as it's made out to be.
I'm not a religious person, but beware if you are! Many students walked out during his lectures on evolution because he constantly slams Christianity for creationism. He said at the beginning of the year that 40% of the class would pass and 4% would get A's... so he is a VERY hard grader. Don't expect extra credit, or to skip class and pass.
His grading policy is unrealistic, all of which only four exams count towards credit and they aren't easy. Also, the class wasn't engaging to me because he just went over powerpoints posted on the TRACS website and went over them too fast and barely explained anything. If I were you, I'd drop the class before it's too late.
Dr. Ott is funny, incredibly educated, and has a strong passion for what he teaches. You will need to put in some effort. however its not as hard as many make it seem. its very lecture based, so don't skip a lot! but don't stress if you miss class. He puts all his slides online. He may seem overwhelming at first, but he is a genuinely good educator
The lectures are repetitive and it seems like he's just telling you the same thing over and over again. He does not go into depth on topics, and quickly brushes over slides and makes his lecture slides so you cannot print them. Assigns a stupendous amount of out of class reading assignments that are not graded but are on the test. Unreasonable
If youre reading this learn from my mistake &save yourself the stress & anxiety by not taking anything that he teaches Has large expertise in bio alsothough is a dry, monotoned lecturer who lacks enthusiasm in teaching. Not engaging, dreaded coming to class, def a wd out class disgruntled old man who is angry about the world, & lashes out onstuddent
Not a good professor. Learn from my mistake. He is very confusing and it is hard to keep up with what he is saying. He gave no extra credit or homework or quizzes your grade is based off 4 exams and they're really tough. He gave a lot of readings that were irrelevant and he would ramble on all class and it was hard to ask questions.
TBH One of my fav profs. Sure, he's tough. If you do the work (really not as much as what earlier reviewers have said) you'll be more than prepared. This is a senior level class, so be prepared to be treated like a senior in a senior level course for biology majors. Generally if you show up to class you're good. Failing students never showed.
Very smart!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Just dont. Will not teach, will not help, gives impossible tests, grade is divided into 3 tests, random quizzes, and the final which was nearly 150 questions. Questions are written in the most complicated way, professor is condescending and narcissistic and only 10% combined get As and Bs. Most students fail.
The class was hard, but not the nightmare that other people are saying it is. Grades are only calculated by 3 tests and the final. Tests are only based off of lectures to it's imperative to go to class. He tries to intimidate people at the start of the course, but warms up toward the semester. Be prepared to have your views challenged.
Dr. Ott is an incredible professor. Do the readings and go to class and you wont have to put in much more effort than that to make an A. His teaching style is very effective and you ACTUALLY LEARN. He tests you on concepts instead of your ability to memorize detailed, trivial stuff like other biology classes.
Avoid this class if you want to live a happier life. Do nOt think about it pls.
If you have to take organismal biology please find another professor, maybe its just the pandemic but this man was just rude for no reason. There was a class groupme for this class and everyone hated his attitude. Also his voice is very monotone, I and many others ended up having to teach themselves.
The work load wasn't the issue. He is a poor biology professor. He only teaches what he believes, by explaining to the students of why creationism is wrong to defend why evolution is right. If Ott didn't have creation to use as an example of why he is right, he wouldn't know how to teach the course. He is a professor I definitely say you pass on.
Hardest class i, get ready to read a textbook, 2 books, and lengthy articles he post. his test are worded weird so it's hard to understand what he is asking. He loves evolution but you can tell he either hates teaching or is too knowledgeable to be a good teacher, he rambles a lot so good luck knowing what to take notes on.
Do not even think about it. He sets his students up for failure.
Gives no feedback on homework that you are supposed to learn concepts from. Expects you to figure things out for yourself. Not sure how he expects students to do well when his test and lectures are very cryptic. They are beyond just knowing what the concepts are and thus do not really test knowledge but your ability to decipher what he is saying.
Don't walk, but run the other way. His classes are test heavy, & I feel didn't actually test your knowledge on the concepts but rather your reading & comprehension skills bc he purposely words his ?'s super trickily. You will second guess yourself all of the time, & good luck asking for clarification without being made to feel incompetent. Just, NO
I took Ott for evolution and it was the worst mistake I have ever made. He does not help you when you ask him questions about the material and will refer you to read the book instead. His test is so heavy and they make you feel dumb. I have never made a bad grade in my college career until I took his class. stay away and take someone else.
If I could give Ott 0 out of 5 stars I would. Claims he wanted us to learn the material but did not answer ANY questions on homeworks nor exams. I had the longest exams I have ever taken in my 4 years of college (135 question final) and he blamed the class for the poor performances. I recommend you find someone else before you end up regretting it.
This is the worst professor I have ever had at Texas State. The average on Exam 2 for the class was a 59. He compared us to 5th graders and then refused to answer questions about an assignment based on the test. I have never struggled so hard to pass in a class and have never felt so unsupported and disrespected as a paying student.
rude and immature comments for no reason and goes off on random opinion based rants often. wouldnt ask my worst enemy to take this class, he provides little to no help, pray to pass.
This guy sucks. Hes so rude and theres only 4 tests. He doesnt teach and just goes through a power point and is so unhelpful. Id honestly choose a different professor or take the class a different time.
this class made me go crazy. He speaks gibberish, so get ready to teach yourself or pay for a tutor.
This class does not make any sense at all. All the lectures are shown through Powerpoints and none of the information relates to the tests. Good luck trying to even get help on homework as well since he doesn't give homework help and refers you to the book instead. Had to learn stuff on my own. Skip this class or find someone else.
this mans horrible to say the least, only grades are 4 test which are hard bc he puts things he doesnt even teach, everyone in here is struggling. This man goes off topic every single class, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.
138 question final. No minor grades, only tests with zero opportunities for extra credit whatsoever.
If you can avoid it , do not take this class. This man is literally my villain origin story . He only grades 4 test , which are very difficult and he test over the most absurd things. if you wanna get some extra points make sure to read his inquiries of curious minds. Im sure he is a very nice person outside of class , but dont take this class
There was no homework, no quizzes, and no extra credit for this class. The grades are solely based on the tests- which are curved, but if you aren't a good test taker this class isn't for you. Professor Ott is also very rude and talks down to his students so I don't recommend him.
Do not take this class unless you literally have to. I was able to get by because I read the textbook religiously. The only grades for this class are tests which he does curve but he takes forever to get them in. You will honestly have to spend most of the time teaching yourself the material, if you can't do that then you will 100% fail. Good luck
lectures are very boring and he goes off topic a lot and seems to talk about COVID 24/7. his lectures dont match the exams so be prepared to teach yourself. he is also very rude to his students. theres only 3 grades and its the exams so if you fail the first one just drop the class
I got an A in course and found it easy as long you pay attention in lecture and read. However, in my whole academic career I don't think I've had a prof seem to hate their job as prof Ott. He is a genuine A hole who punches down at his own students who dont have decades in the field. The biology department at TXST would be better if he stepped down
The entire course is based on 3 tests. The lecture time is not used to help take these tests. The "curve" never got the class averages break out of the low 60s. 48% of the class was set to fail based on the raw final test scores. He also doesn't let you look at old tests either. Don't expect sympathy or understanding from him, he does NOT care.
I hate this man. His voice is grating to my ears and if any circumstance you get this man as your professor, try to switch out. His assignments are pointless and irrelevant to the learning material, he is annoying, he is boring, he is old and I hate him. HE IS EVIL. THE BOARD NEEDS TO GET RID OF HIM!!!!!!! would give negative rating if I could.
He expects you to already know almost everything
I stayed almost to the end because i though i could pass but the only 2 grades left was 2 exams and even getting a perfect score on them i could not pass the class. The professor is entertaining but the lectures and what he teaches and the tests are just not made for students. He expects you to know things and is very rude to the students.
Dr. Ott is not as horrible as everyone makes him seem. He uses comedy and is knowledgeable. The issues come with derogatory remarks and difficulty. If you want a good grade you HAVE to work for it and be a good test taker. His 60-question exams are purposely confusing. This is not an easy A, so if you are looking for that take someone else.
Terrible grading system. I loved his lectures. They were hilarious.
Only 3 grades.
He is not a horrible person. He knows what he's talking about and is pretty passionate about it. The issue is he makes the grade all about exams where more than half the class failed every time. Many people couldn't follow his lecture but I found it easy, you just have to slow down. He was kind enough to curve my grade 3 points so don't doubt him.
A bitter, condescending mannequin of a scientist. Hardly even a professor. Lecture slides contain approximately 1,000 words per-slide and are chaotic, as if made by a 10 year old. Unnecessarily verbose. Hides behind long, complicated-sounding technical terms (many of which are made up by him). Prioritizes exam grades and syllabus adherence.
As someone with a 3.9 GPA and a love of evolution, I am here to say that this is THE HARDEST class I've taken, not because of the material but because of professor Ott. I would rather take organic chemistry 100 more times than take a class with him ever again. Do yourself a favor and avoid him if at all possible.
This is not a class to take if you don't really care or are looking for an easy A. And that's what I really liked about it. When you do well in his class, you know you actually earned it. A lot of people complain about him for petty reasons, but if you're willing to put in the effort, then you should have no issue. I hope to have him again later.
