Definitely the coolest TA ever!!! He’s funny, smart, runs great tutorials, and he’s pretty relaxed. I’d easily take another course with him.
Really good class. One of the best tutorials ever. James has a really sexy mind.
Fun class, Good TA. Wish I could say the same about my other classes.
Wonderful man. He has the similar manner to Ben Stein. Light years nicer, wittier and more interested in developing individuals than most TAs. great taste in shoes.
honestly? i have a crush on this one, but even if i didn't i'd still love the class. i recommend the class, but not falling for your teacher. it's about as frustrating as...reading kathy acker.
Smarter than half my profs except. To boot, hipper and more easygoing.
awesome awesome awesome TA. Very creative, clever, and just a wonderful guy. Your very lucky if your in is class. Can't wait till he's a prof.
The best TA I've ever had in my three years at york. Not only is he super leanient on deadlines he gives really good constructive criticism. I would just go to the tutorial because the lecture was a joke but James clarified everything for me.
best guy ever. monotone but he knows it and uses it to his advantage and slips in the funny quips just before you lose attention and he draws you back in. very approachable and extremely helpful
Three words: best prof ever! Really entertaining. Smart. Knows his stuff. Even makes the dull books interesting. I'm only sorry I didn't take a class with this guy sooner. I'm graduating this year and he's the best prof I had in four years of university.
James is a great prof who genuinely cares about his students. His lectures are incredibly interesting and he has a great sense of humour. The course material was hip and fun, too! As a T.A. he's great at stimulating meaningful discussion, and always encourages students' diverse opinions. BEST PROF EVER!!!
WORST TA! BORING. HARD MARKER. NEEDS TO GIVE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS A BREAK!
James is the best TA I had all year. Whoever wrote that last comment must be on crack! Maybe the course was a bit boring but James is a pretty funny TA and he made things a lot more interesting. He's a fair marker if you work hard and he really explains the material. He helped me a lot with my writing and I started doing better in my other classes.
A really great prof and a really great class. I loved it. James does some of the most interesting lectures I've ever had. He's brilliant but he doesn't talk down to you. He explains really difficult concepts really well. It's the best course I took all year.
Mr. Papoutsis is a great professor that really cares for his students. He always takes time to engage the class and explain clearly any difficult topics.
Such amazing lectures! I never missed a class because professor Papoutsis really engages you and makes you think. He's helpful and approachable and he'll take the time to answer your questions even if you're not in his tutorial. You can tell that he really loves to teach.
This was a really good first year class and I hope to take more with this professor again. He was SO AMAZING and he picks the best books!
Really great prof. Some of the material is challenging but he's good at explaining things. Never makes you feel dumb if you ask a question.
Loved this class! I've had this Prof before, and I'm very glad I got him again. He choses great material and makes it even more interesting with his lectures. He's very approachable, and is easy to communicate with. Funny, insightful, great listener - all in all the best Prof at York!
James is fantastic. I've had him before, and I couldn't be happier with him and the courses he teachers. Definitely one of the best profs I've ever had! And such a cutie!
I love Professor Papoutsis' classes. He's the smartest, most engaging prof I've ever had and I've learned so much from him. Take a class with him and you'll learn more in one class than you will in the rest of your courses combined. I'm serious! I keep taking his courses because he's the best prof at York and he has amazing reading lists.
I took Professor Papoutsis' course in my final year and had I known that the English department had such a great prof I would have taken courses with him sooner. He challenges you and makes you think. I always felt that I learned something each class. The material was challenging but he explained things so well. Great class!
Amazing, amazing, amazing prof. Comics are a lot more complicated than I thought and prof Papoutsis really helped me understand them better. He contextualized comics within cold-war history and I learned so much in this class.
Great prof! Really cares for his students and is willing to always help you them out! Material is fairly hard but he takes things apart and explains concepts so it's understandable!
Amazing class on comics! Amazing Professor! I never knew that comics had such a complicated history. Prof papoutsis is good at explaining difficult concepts and ideas. Course is challenging and there's more reading than you'd think for a class on comics but it was all worth it. One of the best profs and best courses.
James is the best. Had him before and this was one of the best classes I've ever taken. He's such a good prof.
I took this class with Professor Papoutsis last summer. He really opened my eyes to so much and I learned so much in his class. You must take a class with him! He's so smart and engaging. Even when you don't understand something at first he won't make you feel stupid. He takes the time to explain things. He's there for his students.
Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome! Did I mention he's awesome?
This was the highlight of my year. The professor was great, the readings were amazing, and he really cares about his students. You can tell that he loves teaching. A lot of things in the course were pretty challenging but he's patient and he explains everything really really well.
Take anything this prof teaches. He's really amazing.
So boring. Difficult to get a good mark. Super long lectures. Lectures are repetitive. Stay away!
Not easy, but a really, really great class with a great prof. Don't take it if you expect it to be easy but take it if you want to learn something. Comics and cartoons are a lot more complicated than I thought! I found it challenging but very rewarding.
Great class, great prof, and great readings. Loved that we got to read sci-fi and Kerouac and even do tv shows like The Wire. Best seminar I ever took.
amazing, amazing prof. really understanding and you see that he loves his job and cares about his students. he also gives great feedback on work.
A wonderful prof and a wonderful man. He really taught me so much. This was my third class with him and sadly, my last class with him since I'm graduating. He's one of the best profs in the English department.
My favourite online class, ever. Prof Papoutsis gives really interesting lectures. I've taken a few online classes and most don't feel as good as in person classes but I didn't have that feeling with this class. He knows how to use the medium to reach out to students. He's funny and his lectures keep me hooked.
James makes an online course fun, engaging and rewarding. I loved what I was learning! There is a lot of reading and writing to do in such short time, but the way it is structured and taught sets you up for success. Walked away with a profound way of looking at Comics! Do not take it if you think it will be an easy A... because it's not!
Had him for in-person classes as well and he's great at both online and in the classroom which is kind of rare. He really knows how to engage people, and he made the online class feel a lot less impersonal than they usually do. I learned a lot from him. One of the best lecturers ever!
Not the easiest class but a really, really interesting one. 3177 is really good too. Learned a lot about old comics and cartoons and things I'd never heard of before. The Betty Boop lecture was amazing! Loved it! Prof is a fair grader. You can do well but you need to put in the work.
Lots of great readings and a really great prof. Really makes you think.
Challenging but really, really rewarding. James is a really great prof and I loved taking this class with him. Wish I'd discovered him before my last year. He's funny and engaging and the class was one of the best I had.
One of my favourite classes with one of my favourite profs.
Thank god for profs like James. Has a way of talking about literature theory in a way that makes it applicable to real-life issues. Knows how to balance traditional class work/assignments with more modern mediums that enhance his lesson. Accommodating to students, interesting, knowledgable. Also brought in cookies on last day. A++.
James is a wonderful lecturer and clearly knows a lot about the genre and material. As this was an online class, my only regret is that I wasn't able to take this course in class. For those of you that are able, opt for the in-class version. James also gives very good feedback on papers.
The best online course I've ever taken! Most profs don't know how to engage students online. James gives great lectures and online discussion forums are really really engaging. I was surprised by how much I learned from this class. Loved reading A Scanner Darkly, Kerouac, and Ginsberg. Loved James' sense of humour. Loved the whole course!
James is excellent at engaging the class, especially in an online setting where many online profs fail miserably. He's helpful and quick to respond to emails. I would have preferred if he lectured more. No feedback on seminars or participation at all. I shouldn't have to ask for marks. Still, a decent prof all around and a good guy. Funny, too.
A great, great prof and one of the best I've had. Very helpful and understanding. He helped me develop from the first assignment to the last and I was incredibly lucky to have him. Would take again!
Best online course I took. Most profs can't do online classes well at all. Prof Papoutsis gives amazing engaging lectures. I had had him for a regular on-campus class too. He's great in person and he can still bring that enthusiasm and excitement to an online class. Wish more profs were like him.
James really cares about his students. He was very patient with me and gave me help when i needed it. He's a really good prof. Even though English isn't my major he never made me feel stupid. He's good at explaining things and his lectures were so good. More profs should be like him.
Class was a bit challenging and there was a lot of reading to do quickly because it goes at double-speed during the summer but I really got a lot out of this course. Also, prof is amazing. Best online class I ever took. Had to really work for my grade but it was worth it.
This professor is very kind and understanding. All the students got to choose the dates for their online presentation, and I had gotten mine, but for some reason had it fixed in my head that it was the week after. On the syllabus it said if you missed your date, you would get a 0 on it, but i emailed him and he let me do it for the week after.
Such a good professor! We looked at writing from all over the world and he made all of it really interesting. I never learned so much from a course before. Definitely one of the best profs at York!
Great prof! Great class! Great books! He's the best! Love him!
I loved Dr. Papoutsis's class so much! He's energetic, funny, and intelligent. One of the best profs at York!
Very kind and patient with new students. Tells you it's okay to make mistakes and shows you how to learn from them. Course was also amazing. Great readings. And he brought in the playwright of Gertrude and Alice and interviewed her about her work. Such a great experience. So inspiring. I would take every class with him if I could.
James is very nice, but his grading criteria is too undefined. I know English is subjective, but you get little feedback on assignments & no proper criteria beforehand. I dreaded coming to class, it could be intensely boring. It felt like he never read my work & graded it after a quick skim. But I DO appreciate the generous extensions he gave out.
Prof. James is an amazing English teacher. He offers a lot of different perspective into aspects of literature. I loved the different texts we explored in this class because they weren't your typical English class books. The extensions also helped a lot and he even added a prep component to our essays to boost our marks, awesome!
What a great introduction to literature! We read a range of texts including some very modern ones and professor Papoutsis brought in the award-winning playwright of Gertrude and Alice to the class. Such a great and inspiring experience! Really wish he was teaching this year. He's on research leave but I'll take whatever he teaches when he's back!
James is the best! Loved having him for this intro class and it really helped me decide to major in English. Very stimulating lectures. Hope to take many more classes with him!
Great prof and great books and films! I never would have come across most of these on my own and for films I already knew Professor Papoutsis gave me a whole new perspective on them. He changed the way I look at film entirely. He's a gem!
What a fun and engaging class! I didn't have a specific interest in Children's Literature before this but now I've gone back and started rereading all sorts of things from my youth. Professor Papoutsis gave me a new perspective on reading Children's lit and opened my eyes to all sorts of things I hadn't noticed about my favourite C.S. Lewis book.
Best prof I've had! He's so engaging and puts together such interesting courses. This is the second class I had with him and I will take more. Some parts are challenging. It's not a bird course even though it's about children's literature. He covers cool topics I didn't expect like YA fiction, gaming, and digital culture. So amazing!
Dr. Papoutsis himself is a great professor. He is very laid back yet knowledgable and tries to keep his weekly lectures under an hour. The marking, however, is very intense especially for a first year course. Class average was a C plus.
The best prof at York! He really made my year.
Professor Papoutsis really cares about his students which is a lot more than I can say for some of my other profs. He is understanding, accommodating, and willing to give you a lot of his time. Even though I know he was busy with all his teaching and taking care of his family during covid he still made time for students who needed it. Amazing prof
He is a great prof that cares about his students. When I needed help completing an assignment that I could not complete on time, he gave me the chance to do it after it was due. His lectures are concise and informative, and he genuinely seems to care about what he does, and how his students are doing. It was a pleasure to take his course.
One of the best profs I had at York. Realistic expectations and supports those who want to succeed. I took this course a couple of years ago, and he made such a lasting mark, that I'm still compelled to give good feedback to this day. As for the course, I truly enjoyed the content and concepts covered. Would highly recommend.
He really knows how to get the best out of his students. He challenges you, and he really picks readings that are engaging. His class made me decide to major in English. Some other profs teaching intro courses are not so good but he's a gem.
This was not a easy bird course. Professor Papoutsis was really understanding towards his students. However, the TAs would mark very hard and take marks away for small mistakes. Overall, the selection of books could be of been more interesting Course breakdown: three essays , discussion forums and final essay
Professor Papoutsis is really great and very understanding of students. The course had some really interesting books that I would never have read otherwise. The TA did grade hard but if you followed their feedback you could improve. I like that this course helped me learn to be a better writer. He's a really good speaker. Lectures were awesome!
Challenging for a non-major like me but an excellent class. Great prof. He gives good feedback that and it helped me with my writing. My background is science and I didn't know if I'd like English or not but he made it really enjoyable. Can't believe I had fun reading literature. He's that good.
Really amazing prof. Never makes you feel stupid and takes time to explain things. I learned a lot.
I have to say one of the best profs at York. During COVID I was struggling a lot but prof. Papoutsis was so caring and understanding and helped me throughout the course. His lectures are interesting and the feedback given on my papers was phenomenal. He truly is here to see his students suceed. If you see his course, TAKE IT.
The best prof in the CCY program! The best lectures of any class I've ever taken. Also very understanding of student needs and very approachable. He challenged me in so many ways and I became a much better essay writer. I'm in the last year of my program and I wish I discovered him sooner!
Excellent, excellent prof. Challenging course if you're not used to writing essays. Really great lectures. The only prof I had all year where watching lectures was pure joy. A lot of other profs have not adjusted well to online teaching but he's absolutely amazing.
Professor Papoutsis is an amazing and inspiring instructor. He took the time to help me overcome some essay-writing weaknesses and it was the first time that any prof in my program sat down and gave me such detailed help and feedback with my writing. He really wants students to perform to the best of their abilities and he really cares. Amazing!
Really interesting class and a great professor. Loved learning about comics and cartoons. Essays and assignments were challenging but fair. Not an easy A if that's what you're looking for but excellent lectures and one of the best profs at York!
the best prof i've ever had!!! this was the most engaging & interesting course i've taken in my undergrad life so far and i'm so glad that i got to experience it with him. the grading scheme is nice with just 3 essays, one take-home, and weekly discussion posts. TA's are super nice & everything is marked fairly. BEST ENG PROF AT YORK TAKE HIM!!!
AMAZING PROF! Great class with really interesting lectures. Engaging and very stimulating professor who knows how to challenge you and get the best out of you. Best class I had all year. Best prof I've had at York!
Professor Papoutsis is really supportive of students. So many profs didn't know how to handle classes during covid or help their students. It was so refreshing to have someone like professor Papoutsis. He genuinely cares and you can tell. It shows in all aspects of his teaching. If you have a chance to take his class do it!
What an amazing class! Dr. Papoutsis really knows how to make things interesting. The readings were good but what I really enjoyed were his insights into them. Really, really good lectures. Excellent instructor overall.
Pre-recorded lectures were good and the readings were great. Prof put in the effort to make things easier since it's online. TA did not put in any effort. Never sent a hello or welcome to the class. Just graded our paper. But Prof is good at least!
Best prof at York! Great lectures. Very approachable. Really great online class.
The course is a bit challenging for a non-major but this professor is THE ABSOLUTE BEST! God I love his lectures and I love hearing him talk. He introduced me to all sorts of interesting books I wouldn't have otherwise read plus I got a whole new perspective on things I thought I knew like Watchmen. I absolutely loved his class!
Dr. Papoutsis is the best! My TA wasn't so great but I loved the professor was amazing and I loved the lectures and readings.
Professor Papoutsis really cares about his students and wants you to do your best. I learned so much in his class. It wasn't always easy because essay writing is not my strong point but he taught me some things about essay writing that no one else had ever bothered to. We need more profs like this!
Amazing professor and a great class! I learned a lot about the history of comedy and I liked that he could teach across so many periods. Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and the Marx Brothers all in one class is golden!
Didn't realize that I'd be reading so much Shakespeare when I signed up for this class but Dr. Papoutsis made it really interesting and accessible. Now I've started to read some Shakespeare just for fun. So glad I took this class!
Prof. Papoutsis is a great lecturer. He knows how to make class material exciting and got me to view graphic novels differently and with more appreciation. Great guy but a very tough grader. But if you do all the work and readings, you should be fine. Take his class if you can; definitely a treat.
He is pretty caring and gave extensions. Some parts of the essay instructions felt very vague and difficult if you are writing about graphic novels for the first time, and I hope more explanation was given. Overall nice prof.
Amazing and inspirational professor! Knows how to keep students engaged and has an amazing online presence. I could listen to him lecture for ages. He really knows how to hold your interest and I learned so much from him. Amazing!
Professor is amazing! Some of the material is challenging and readings aren't always easy but his lectures are so illuminating. Excellent teacher. Brilliantly insightful. Best prof I had that year!
Professor Papoutsis really cares about students and listens to student feedback. I've never had a professor who was so open and interested in how students feel about the course and course material. He is very approachable and tells students openly that the course is for them. I wish more professors were like this.
This course was SUCH a disappointment. The prof barely interacted with students, his lectures featured terrible audio and were sporadically posted (if he posted lectures at all), AND he only gave back one assignment with feedback. I went into the final only knowing 20% of my final grade. Don't take if you actually want to learn/improve.
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Engaging and interesting lectures and great readings. Very approachable professor.
Really interesting class. Professor Papoutsis was one of the best profs I had in the Children Childhood and Youth Studies program and it was a great way to end my time at York. He really gave me a new perspective on youth culture. I wish I'd had a chance to take a class with him sooner.
Amazing class and great lectures. I loved this course and this prof. Best prof I've had for an online course. Don't try to use your phone for eClass though. York was supposed to add support for mobile but lectures don't play well. Tech support was useless but Professor Papoutsis figured out the issue. After that I had no problems. Great prof!
Great prof! Love his lectures and his energy. There were some issues with the course site but they got sorted. Knows how to keep you interested online which most profs can't do. Best prof I had all year!
A really great professor. I loved his lectures and the readings. I'm not an English major but he made me want to become one.
Professor Papoutsis was the best prof I've had all year! Really interesting course and great readings. He really cares about his students.
My favourite prof at York! Excellent class all around. I'm not an English major but he made everything really interesting and accessible. Even poetry and drama which I did not think I would like. Take any class with him. He's the best!
Best professor I had this year and such a great prof for an intro class! Very encouraging and helped me develop some good skills. Knowledgable but still approachable. Amazing!
Professor refuses to increase grades. He refuses to grade the class based on their performance in the course, but rather based on performance compared to professional writers. It was said in class multiple times that achieving an A is near impossible, and that your grade cannot be improved much from the first assignment to the second.
My favourite prof at York. I learned so much from Dr. Papoutsis and he's a great lecturer.
Interesting and engaging professor. Very approachable and sensitive to student needs. One of my favourite professors at York.
Interesting and fun class and a great professor! Would take any class that this prof taught. I'm not an English major but professor Papoutsis made me feel welcome in his class.
An absolutely amazing class with this prof! Made my summer, and school almost never makes my summer. Prof Papoutsis is amazingly gifted at teaching and engaging with students.
My last course at York and my best course at York. I wish I had discovered this prof earlier. Dr. Papoutsis is incredibly engaging and the most intellectually stimulating professor I had. Knows how to create and run an online course effectively and is very attuned to student needs. More profs should be like this.
A really engaging class. Professor Papoutsis is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. I really liked the choice of readings. Some seemed eclectic and at first were not easy to understand but Professor Papoutsis does a great job of explaining things. Absolutely loved him!
I loved this class! Discussions around censorship and copyright were of particular interest because I plan to go into law and I'm interested in those areas. This class was WAY BETTER than anything I took in York's Law and Society program and much more informative.
Really enjoyed the class. Nice interesting prof. Really great voice. Could listen to him for hours.
Best professor I had in four years of university. Wish there were more like him. Lectures were really interesting and always got you thinking. I didn't know much about graphic novels before taking the class but he is patient and helps you learn. I followed his feedback from the first assignment and was able to do better afterwards. Great class!
Really fun summer class. Great way to end my time at York. Professor is funny and interesting and knows how to hold your attention in lecture. Grading was fair and discussion forums were good. Louis Riel was my favourite reading but professor chose a lot of great things for the course and I loved almost everything.
This class was a real highlight for me and the professor is one of the best. Loved the lectures. I could listen to his voice for hours.
A very interesting class. A bit challenging for me since I'm not an English major but I learned a lot and the professor has clear expectations. Essay writing skills are a must. Lectures are very good. Good online class.
Great professor. Really makes you think. Class had interesting readings and lectures were great!
A very good class. Professor Papoutsis is a great lecturer and very approachable. Great feedback with concrete suggestions that helped me improve my writing. He really helped me learn how to write at a university level and none of my other profs for first year even bothered to try.
If you have the chance to take a class with Dr. James Papoutsis, don't miss it! His lectures are engaging, and it's clear that he genuinely loves teaching and cares about his students' success. He even makes literary studies—normally a subject I don't enjoy—fun and interesting. Highly recommended!
Engaging lectures and approachable prof. Leveraged unstuckstudy for essay prep - really helpful alongside the textbook. Solid online class experience overall.
Never interacted with him because TA marked everything Lectures - short (max. 1 hr), easy content, occasionally include movies/performances of texts, no clear transition from one topic to another & hard to understand what he's talking about Assignment instructions are super vague, no specifics about anything.
Very great prof who does great lectures and good teaching. Writing part was difficult for me because I am computer science major but course was most interesting I took all year. Course was excellent overall . Professor was very excellent.
Amazing! Such a smart and interesting prof who really makes you think. Assignments are challenging but very clear instructions. Very understanding and compassionate towards non-majors. Encouraged me even though I found writing difficult at times.
Great prof! Class was interesting. Fair grader and good feedback. Really wants to see students do well and helps you develop.
One of the best professors I ever had. Great writing instructor! Very inspirational. Gave very detailed feedback on my work. In my four years in the professional writing program I have never had a better class!
Such a great professor. Dr. Papoutsis is really caring and made me a braver and stronger writer. I wish the class was longer. It's also the first time I had an online writing class that worked so well. Most profs don't know how to make online courses engaging but this class felt just as good as in person. He can really connect with students.
I've never had a prof in this program who did so much to encourage students to develop their work for publication. He gave me such detailed feedback on my final project that I have a very clear idea of how to move forward. Excellent professor and great teacher!
Dr. Papoutsis is an inspiring professor. I learned so much from him, He has a real passion for teaching writing and it shows.
