Absolutely the best chem teacher I've had thus far in my entire academic career. Notes are succinct, well-organized. and even though I did all of the readings thoroughly they wouldn't have been necessary for the tests. Tests are sufficiently challenging but he takes off a TON of points even for minor, careless errors. I love him nonetheless.
Fantastic professor. Gives excellent notes in class, easy to follow and very clear. I didn't find it necessary to read the textbook, though it was helpful when I did. Very willing to help and answer questions, easy to talk to. Office hours were really helpful. Exams were tough, but fair. I highly recommend Dr.Parise
Gives clear straightforward lectures with great notes. Friendly and eager to help. He's great during office hours. Grading was fair. Definitely recommend taking a class he's teaching.
He may write out too much on the board, but he does so to be very clear. Very available for questions and answers quickly. Adds some charm to the class with some nerdy jokes, but he teaches the material well. Orgo is still orgo, but Parise is a solid teacher.
This is a hard class. Parise knows what he's talking about and is a very good guy, but the class is really tough. Test can be tricky, but going through the problems in the book is really essential. Doing that can help the tests. Go through his old tests, and beware the final - its kind of ridiculous.
First off-orgo is hard at Duke, period. But Parise does an excellent job. His tests are hard but you know what to expect (no curveballs). He is straightforward in lecture & very helpful in emails. Tends to quote the book but is very thorough & a nice guy - I second the comment about the nerdy chem jokes. Pick Parise over anyone else for orgo.
I've heard horror stories about orgo, but having Parise really made a difference. I still did really poorly on his tests, but it was my own fault; his tests really are straightforward. He doesn't try to trick you and he is extremely clear with his teaching. His old tests are helpful to look at, but his tests now focus a lot more on mechanisms.
Excellent professor. His lectures are clear, extremely helpful, and pretty funny. He's by far my fav professor at Duke thus far and made orgo enjoyable. I wish he taught my other science courses. He's very helpful and easy to talk to. Definitely make an effort to get to know him outside of class. I recommend him over anyone else.
Dr. Parise could not have been more clear. Let me repeat that-Dr.Parise could not be more clear. His lecture style is excellent and definitely the best. Tests are hard, but honestly how easy can orgo be? Just know the material really well (make orgo your priority)and you'll be fine. Plus Parise curves nicely-I got avg on all tests & got a b!
Parise is the best science professor I've had at Duke and probably one of my favorites overall. I really liked his thorough lecture style; he kept us engaged so that I was rarely bored in class. It's difficult not to take good lecture notes, and these, along with the past exams, are the key to doing well on tests.
I HATE Chemistry but Parise, through his clear and charming lecture style, made orgo less intimidating and actually pretty interesting. Also, he is always available for questions and is very personable. His tests are hard, but fair so if you keep up with reading and problem sets you will do totally fine.
Terrific prof. Clear, organized, and helpful. Made a huge effort getting to know the students out of class. Absolutely recommend taking orgo with Parise.
This guy is awesome. He is enthusiastic and will help you through this difficult subject if you let him.
Clear teaching style with logic that follows the textbook. He re-wrote all his notes on the whiteboard with helpful diagrams so it was easy to keep up in class. I was really impressed with his enthusiasm and willingness to help students on a one to one basis.
Dr. Parise was approachable and very helpful. He made sure we knew what we needed to know for the test. I didn't really mind going to lecture, and he's pretty funny.
Dr. Parise provided all I could have asked for in an organic chemistry professor and more. His method of presenting the material highlights what is important and is easy to follow. Highly recommended!
If you are taking orgo 1, take it with Parise. His lectures are clear, organized, and simple. You should try to get to know him outside of the class because he is a fun guy and actually makes an effort to remember you. He made my Orgo 1 experience incredible. His tests are hard but fair and if you work hard for the final, it will pay off.
Parise is great, especially during the summer. His lectures are a bit dull, but extremely clear and helpful if you pay close attention. His tests are very straight-forward, so they are easy to do well on, given you study hard for them.
Professor Parise is my favorite professor I've ever had. He is such a nice person and really cares about his students. Go to office hours!!! They are so helpful, and he will recognize your effort. Still, the class is hard (I believe it's significantly harder than those who took it with a different professor), so the test grades can be discouraging.
Professor Parise is really good at explaining things clearly and efficiently, and he lectures really well. However, you do have to buy his Organic Chemistry textbook for the class even though it does not remotely cover the same material as labs. The course material is also weirdly more Orgo based than Gen Chem based, even though it is a 101 class.
He is excellent at explaining organic chemistry (literally wrote the textbook). He has a great lecture style - instead of going through boring powerpoint slides, he used an iPad to write out notes during class so everyone could follow along. Exams are pretty hard, but if you do the assigned problems, you will do well.
He's fantastic. Both smart and personable, lectures are engaging, and class is very regular and structured so you know exactly what to expect. The workload is a lot, but tests are EXTREMELY fair and if you actually do what he says wrt working checklists of problems, going to discussion/lecture, and creating your own resources, you will succeed.
Professor Parise is clear when explaining things and is a really good lecturer. He also helps you when you need it and it understanding as long as you try. However, he does use an Orgo textbook (that he wrote) for what is supposed to be a general chemistry class, and it often did not match the lab content. Regardless, his class is worth taking.
Absolutely goated professor! Outstanding guy who's also interesting outside of the classroom - loved FLUNCHing him. Put in the work, and you'll see results. Straightforward tests that you can do well on as long as you keep up with the textbook. The 830 was hellish, but Dr. Parise's enthusiasm and dad jokes made it more than worth it.
Professor Parise has an excellent lecture style. He makes concepts in this course very clear, and he cracks a few jokes here and there as well. His exams can be challenging but are usually pretty fair. He didn't provide a ton of practice exams, but he gives you lists of book problems that can moderately prepare you for the tests.
Orgo was probably the most challenging class I've taken so far at Duke, but Dr. Parise was really helpful throughout the year in ensuring that we all felt comfortable with the content. He wrote the textbook so he knows what he's talking about and is very accessible for office hrs outside of class. If taking 201, definitely try to take it with him!
Parise is cool. If you really want to do well, you've gotta do extra problems, and Parise emphasizes this. Tests are sometimes tricky, and the practice exams he provides are even trickier. No grade-bumpers like discussion or hw, so try not to fail a midterm. Hard to get an A b/c it depends on your classmates...I had a low 90 and still got an A-
He is amazing. He made me love chemistry, and I'm even considering a major related to this subject. His classes require a lot of preparation, but he explains so well that no topic seemed difficult. He is never bored with students' questions and is easily available in his office. The professor also judges very fairly. Highly recomended!
Dr. Parise is a clear and concise professor, and a great choice if you're planning for Orgo to be your top priority. He wrote the textbook, so the text reflects lecture -- sometimes too well, since almost all the examples in class were straight from the textbook. The textbook is NOT OPTIONAL, and he doesn't release lecture notes/external material.
Such an amazing teacher. Parise explains everything so clearly that I am never confused after a lecture. Relatively easy course but the bell curve screws up your grade. I fully think it is worth it though! I would love to take another class with Parise.
Dr. Parise is an AMAZING professor who truly cares about his students! His lectures are great and go over all of the homework readings. Dr. Parise provides practice tests and makes himself available for both in-class exam reviews and reviews during office hours. A LOT of helpful practice problems. Requires a lot of work but is worth it 100%!!!!!
Jimmy P is amazing!! He is an amazing professor - always has a great attitude.
Live, laugh, love Jimmy P. He's a great professor who made lectures fun and interesting. He was very accessible outside of class and ensured we left feeling confident. One thing I disliked about this class was the way he graded/curved. It's almost impossible to know your grade until after the final and the grades are curved in such a strange way.
Dr. Parise/Jimmy P is an awesome professor! His lectures were always thorough and interesting even at 8 in the morning and he's a very nice person. However, only 3 exams + the final make up most of your grade, and the grading was a little confusing (i.e., we didn't know what an A actually "was" till the last week of class).
Dr. Parise is a great professor. He cares about his students and is accessible even with the huge class enrollment. For a general chem course, a lot of the content is organic chemistry, which can make it challenging but still doable. To do well on tests, make sure to keep up with textbook readings and practice problems.
I didn't like the grading system of the class, there's a strange curve for every test and you basically don't know your grade until the end of the semester. The key to doing well is to do the textbook problems, and try not to bomb any tests. Do well on the labs (even though they have no correlation to the class), because it can save your grade.
Dr. Parise is awesome. He has great lectures that clearly explain often confusing material featured in the textbook. He often includes jokes, songs, or memes in his slides to keep engagement high. My main recommendations would be to do, as he says, practice problems in the textbook. Those are key to doing well on the tests.
very fun intro class that includes a lot of organic topics. would highly recommend u take
on god the best professor ever i love him
Dr. Parise is a great lecturer and a nice guy, but I would definitely avoid Orgo 2 with him. The class is pitted against each other with his grading system, and it makes the class incredibly toxic. He also gives barely any partial credit on exams or other grades to supplement. Wish I waited to take Orgo 2 in the fall.
James Parise can seem like a good professor, but it is all for show. He always has great lectures, but is always late to office hours and never answers questions clearly. He says not to worry if you did poorly on an exam, but there's no way you can get an A if you got a B on the first exams.
He is quite good.
I had very weak foundation in Chemistry coming from high school, so there was definitely a learning curve for me at the start of this class. He teaches Chem101 out of his Organic Chemistry textbook, so naturally the course is pretty orgo-heavy. Work hard and do problems from his textbook to study-- you will do well on exams.
Parise is a kind guy and a good lecturer. He uses his textbook so get ready to read it and expect it to be overcomplicated. He also wants $ so you have to buy the solutions. If you skim it and focus on the discussion problems (over textbook problems) you should do just fine. But the textbook problems (though being super hard) prep you better.
This will be a tough class no matter who you take it with, but Parise is very clear on his expectations and his lectures are great. If you come to class and do the problems he assigns for practice (not mandatory) the exams aren't overwhelming at all. He is super approachable and helpful outside of class and wants to see students do well.
I didn't do amazing on my first exam in the class, and Dr. Parise was very willing to meet one on one with me outside of class to discuss what went wrong and how I can do better in the course. Tests are incredibly fair, and if you go to lectures everything will be doable and something you've seen before.
Orgo 2 isn't easy. Other reviews complaining about the curve won't make it as doctors. Curve's reasonable if you study. I lacked time for a higher grade. Dr. Parise emphasizes doing countless book problems for success.
Professor seems like a nice lecturer but all the concepts that he explain are so vague. He says one thing in his lectures and his textbook says another. When I go to him for clarification, he never answers the question to the point.
Great lecturer and gives a very concise group of resources to prepare for the tests. Use the materials he gives you and you will do well on each test. Lots of work and practice problems if you want to succeed but it is rewarding.
Dr. Parise is great at what he does. He is super passionate about chemistry, and he puts in a great deal of effort to make sure that students succeed. He supplies tons of practice problems and posts sample exams. As long as you do the readings and problems, exams will not be terrible. Only complaint is not knowing curve until very end of semester.
A frustrating class. Praise teaches out of his own organic chemistry textbook, which makes the class infinitely more difficult than comparable classes at other top universities. Not easy to access outside of class, as well as discrepancies between the questions assigned for practice and those on the test.
He's a phenomenal lecturer but the class structure is very unforgiving. Three exams and a final are 70% and lab makes up another 25%. You will invest a lot of time into this class. He's pretty good about answering on edstem. You will learn way more orgo than anticipated. Go to lecture or you will struggle so hard. Good luck stem majors
I love Jimmy P. He was a great professor and always showed up to class with a smile on his face. He made an 8:30 worth it, much more enjoyable than expected. Grading was always clear, no surprises on the exam. Lectures were structured well. Make sure you stay on top of the work, because it definitely piles up.
Parise was an engaging lecturer and has a wonderful vibe, but there were definitely lectures I had a hard time following. The homework and readings help you get an understanding of the material as you go. Exams are most of the grades which puts a lot of pressure on each exam. They can be challenging but generally are reflective of the material.
He himself is a great caring guy. The lectures are good but it's hard to absorb the information because you're trying to copy down everything he says. Definitely became humbled and studying a lot doesn't guarantee a good grade. There's basically no homework (other than heinous lab reports) so its just exams...do well on them...or try...
Parise is a great teacher if you have to take organic chemistry. The material is just hard in general, but he does his best to make it bearable. He's available for meetings all of the time and so are the TAs. He's an interesting guy and definitely cares about his students. He has checklists with suggest problems to complete that keep you on pace.
Had Dr. Parise for 101 and 201! He's a lovely professor that is committed to supporting his students. He has made lectures "fun" with his jokes and smiley attitude. He is available on Ed and in person, always willing to meet and discuss topics. I do recommend!
Professor seems like a nice lecturer but all the concepts that he explain are so vague. He says one thing in his lectures and his textbook says another. When I go to him for clarification, he never answers the question to the point.
My favorite professor at Duke! Gave me a delicious donut hole on LDOC!! It was so worth it :)
I want other students to know how phenomenal of a professor Dr. Parise is.
Yummy donut holes at the end!!!!
Parise was awul in Chem101. Granted, he is the orgo professor and Duke decided to prepare pre-meds by making the same professor teach genchem, and it definitely showed. As a non pre-med/chem major I don't care about orgo and was penalized for taking a required class. Parise was awful at conveying information and the class was so hard.
While chem 101 was very organic chemistry heavy, so long as you did the practice problems, you really were fine. He is so positive almost like a proton ;+D
YALL when I say you need to take a course with Dr. Parise, I MEAN IT!!! An eye-opening experience for sure loll. He is an amazing prof and I have genuinely learned a lot! I would recommend any course with him
If you have the chance to take any chem course with Dr. Parise, take it!!! I've now had Dr. Parise for two semesters and onto my third semester with him haha but it has been the biggest pleasure. He is an amazing lecturer and although the content is difficult (I mean it is orgo) his jokes and bright personality make lectures engaging. I 100% recomm
Dr. Parise makes chem so enjoyable!! I can't do anything but applaud him for that. There is a lot of reading but as long as you dedicate time to problem solving, you will be successful. He has designed this course in a very fair way. The exams do compose a large percent of your grade, however I feel like you can definitely prepare with his resource
parise is a great professor! hes funny and very nice. he got us donuts and likes talking to students. his tests are a little tricky but they are fair. his textbook is really good
Dr. Parise is a great professor. He posts checklists for every chapter. Keeping up with these problems is crucial for success. He doesn't provide many practice exams, but still many prep sources are available (lecture review problems, discussion psets, etc). Solve many problems! Exams are 70% of grade, 25% is lab, and rest is discussion.
Dr. Parise has been the best professor I have had at Duke. He is an amazing lecturer and his tests reflect what he teaches in class. Students who do poorly in his class either don't do the assigned practice problems or never seek out help. Dr. Parise hosts lecture reviews outside of class and of the 300 students only 10 showed up every week.
Parise is a great lecturer and wants to see all of his students succeed. He gives a lot of homework, but it is good practice for the exams. He is accessible outside of class and offered lots of student hours. Exams are difficult and require a lot of studying to succeed. Parise teachs pre-orgo given he teaches out of his own orgo textbook.
Orgo is hard, it takes a lot of effort and time commitment. However, Parise has great and helpful lectures and lecture reviews. It is very important to study everything for the exams. The class grade is nearly completely dependent on how well you do on the exam. Parise assigns a lot of work out of his own textbook.
In this class, your input likely matched your grades. It's easy to underestimate how much you would need to study but trust me, lock yourself away from civilization for a few days for every exam if you want a pretty grade. The final did throw us all for a loop so be prepared for that as well. Overall, fantastic lecturer who cares about you.
The first test he gives is relatively easy but after that, be prepared to really dedicate your time to this class. The material isn't particularly difficult, it's the sheer amount of it that makes this class so difficult. My entire spring break was spent studying for an exam (8-10h/day) and there was still somehow more to cover. Still adore Parise!
Hard class. Lectures aren't recorded and notes aren't posted so attendance is important and you need to pay attention to get all the notes down, same with discussion. Exams make up 70% of the grade. Holds lecture reviews twice a week which are helpful if they fit in your schedule. Assigns a lot of textbook problems and readings for practice.
Not to be dramatic but I'm actively avoiding him / will not take another chem class with Parise again... AMAZING guy don't get me wrong, but his teaching style really doesn't work for me and I also think that it's wrong to have tests that are mostly multiple choice where you lose four points per question -- especially in a chemistry class.
I thought he was good but after taking 202 with another professor, I realized he wasn't clear and couldn't explain content beyond a surface level. Good for lazy premeds but I want to learn the material. He is popular with students because his is ridiculously easy but that unfortunately didn't translate to a rich understanding of content.
Parise is great! He sets you up to do well in the course. He provides chapter checklists, and many other resources to make sure you are ready for exams. Go to lecture, do all the practice problems, and you'll be fine. He's also great about giving partial credit on exams.
Definitely a college wake up call. If you want to do well you have know information outside the scope of what he teaches, which is beyond frustrating. Lab is also extremely unrelated to the class and all the reports are beyond confusing.
Jimmy P. One of the guys, just a super cool Professor. Provides us with great resources like his numerous videos on topics we cover in class and his very helpful practice exams. Pro tip that he also gives: DO THE PROBLEMS IN THE TEXTBOOK. It'll help you tremendously. Midterms are tough, but the final was VERY fair. Gonna miss 8:30s with him…
Dr. Parise is a great professor - clear lectures, accessible outside of class, and very organized. I learned a ton in his class. It is SUPER important to keep up with the readings and practice problems/checklists if you want to do well, since the exams draw heavily from the book. Grade comes only from exams.
Explains chemistry in a clear way in his lectures and the tests aren't that bad if you pay attention in class, lab, etc.
Lectures aren't mandatory, but not recorded; doesn't share notes from lecture so p much HAVE to attend. Tests are EXTREMELY fair and gives great partial credit/lenient on grading. Sweet person, caring, and tries to teach you orgo conceptually instead of forcing you to memorize mechanisms and reactions. Always willing to help outside of class.
I took CHEM101, CHEM201 and CHEM202 with Parise. For context I'm not a chemistry person so I found all of the courses to be very difficult, obviously increasing difficultly with the course code. Use the resources that he gives you they're SUPER helpful (practice problems via textbook, lecture reviews, discussion problem sets, practice exams, etc.).
W Professor W person. I took Orgo 1, Orgo 1, and Gen Chem with him. All the classes were challenging and required a lot of time outside of class, but he gives you all the resources you need to succeed. There's no reason you can't get an A if you exhaust all his assigned resources. The exams are also very fair.
Took both orgo 1 and orgo 2 with Parise and found orgo 2 much easier. Exams were very similar to the assigned textbook questions (some exactly from the book). Final had a page of questions exactly from previous midterms. He is very accesible outside of class and exams were fair but they are all that makes up your grade so prepare well
Parise is great as a person, but his class is made to be more difficult than it needs to be. I did not find the textbook problems to be helpful and instead would prefer if we read the textbook but has problems that were more similar to the read to practice from instead. Overall, he is not terrible and his lecture is good. But makes an A, impossible
He is a very good professor and is truly caring but at the end of the day, it is orgo... I would def take a class with him again but he only grades by exams and midterms which is a huge negative.
He's a great lecturer, and you'll actually understand orgo if you try
Lectures are helpful, but textbook reading and questions are much more important for success on exams. Grading is a bit tough when it comes to exams and how letter grades are assigned
Not a fan of a mandatory charge for an online textbook, but he was good at teaching.
He makes you buy his book and solutions manual, and lectures usually restate examples from the textbook. I sometimes didn't see the point of the lecture. Exams were much easier than Cox's, but Parise down curves and grades harshly to make up for the easier exams. Take Cox or someone else—it may be harder, yet the grading policies should be better.
I take back every bad thing I ever said about Canelas, Martinez, and even Dewey if it meant I didn't have to take his class. This class proves to me Orgo is not standardized across professors. How is my C comparable to someone in Dewey having an A but I know more content?
Swears by textbook questions that aren't actually very representative of the exams, other chem professors are seen as tougher, but they lay out expectations and info in lecture much better in my opinion. Take advantage of problem sets and sample exams the most.
He sold us on using his organic book in 101 because he either lazy or didn't want to teach 101. Because of him, 210 has been awful because we had to learn the actually 101 content in addition to the new 210 stuff. He seems good until you take additional courses, then you realize how little effort he puts in.
You should get an A if you show up to lectures and do the work he assigns
Just show up to lectures and you're guaranteed to not bomb the tests.
Parise is easily one my favorite professors I've had. While the course is challenging at times with lots a problems, Parise gives good advice on how to succeed in the course and is accessible. He is very funny and genuinely cares about his students. His lectures can sometimes move fast, but he makes the material easy to grasp and enjoyable to learn
His lectures are extremely basic, his exams are extremely difficult. He's not good enough of a lecturer to justify his exams. My favorite thing about Parise are his resources (not his textbook)
was scared of parise bc of negative reviews and only professor i could take. BUT i ended up having a great experience. great lecturer, solid textbook + prepares well for exam. organic chem is hard, and no doubt you're challenged to apply rather than memorize. just do all the practice problems, attend lecture, and you're solid. parise the goat fr
Overall a very solid professor. Everything's subjective to each individual, but I think his tests were difficult but he had tons of practices resources and lectured really well. There might be better professors, but I definitely wouldn't hesitate to choose him for orgo.
After a horrible gen chem experience, I was afraid going into orgo but Parise is a genuinely a great professor. He provides ample practice and resources that you must take advantage of. The key to succeeding is to constantly do the practice problems. Your grade is basically midterms and a final but an A is possible if you stay on top of it.
Very nice prof. If you can take his class, take it!
Dr. Parise genuinely wants all of his students to do well and gives you resources to succeed such as his lecture reviews and unit checklists. However, I felt that his exams were unrepresentative of the preparation materials and were more so based on things not covered in lecture. Reading the textbook and working all the practice problems is crucial
COMPREHENSIVE: Parise is a kind, well-meaning professor who provides plenty of study materials. His lectures are strong, but to do well on the tests you need to also practice many problems. Midterms are difficult but doable by using all available resources (devote days to prep); final was slightly better. Grading is determined largely by exams.
He is an amazing teacher. Best science teacher I've had in my life. He is so passionate, and if you do all his practice multiple times and checklists throughout the unit. DONT FALL BEHIND. You will be an expert by the time you leave his class. So many people get an A- and definitely wouldn't at any other school knowing this much content.
