Funny guy. Disorganized and likes to go off on tangents. Not a hard grader and nice as far as I know. I really don't like the lack of structure in his class, but it's easy to slack off in such an environment.
Great teacher, not so organized but that's what makes his class interesting. Extremely helpfull 1-1.
I really enjoyed this class. I came in not knowing anything about the subject and ive now learned so much. Pro. Pasto knows so much about everything!!! I would highly recommend any of his classes!! (the lack of stucture really isnt a problem)
He's gotten me to change my major to anthropology! I loved the class..
Extremely nice and very willing to help. Interesting lectures, but he does tend to go off on tangents and the class does lack structure. Don't let that keep you from taking his class!
Awesome professor, and such a cutie! I love his class, and he convinced me to change my major to Anthropology. I don't mind his tangents, I think learning more history helps to write a better balanced paper.
Disorganized. He definitally knows what he's talking about if you take the time to listen though. Nice guy.
Brilliant professor. Sporadic at times, likes to go off on tangents but truly one of the best professors that i have had so far.
an amazing professor!!! i tried to get into his wr150 class but it was one of the first to fill up!!! i would recommend him for anyone looking for more than just a boring writing class; ive learned so much more than expected
Very fair and smart cookie. If you visit office hours he is very very helpful. Class became somewhat boring at times but bareable. nice guy
Very smart dude, Love his laid back teaching style. Keep up with your work and you should be able to get an A. He also helps you grow as a writer. Very approachable if you need any help.
presents info very clearly, reasonable coursework, VERY fair grader
Coooooool Professor!!! Best professor I have ever met in BU writing class! He has great great personality and always tries to help students. Love his class!
By far one of the best writing Professors BU has on its staff. He is very willing to help students; he often goes over your assignments one on one and you can resubmit it for a new grade. If you need to take WR100, get Pasto!
good god this man is amazing. most caring professor ive ever had. brilliant, helped me grow as a writer soo much. he knows so much about EVERYTHING. for the love of god, take him for wr100/150.
His WR100 Class about Captain Cook and all that was alright. The topic was pretty boring, but he's really nice.
If you write above a third grade level, he will not be able to comprehend your paper. He refuses to read into the deeper meanings of your papers, and thus leaves you feeling jilted by an inferior prefessor. If you write at the College-level you're screwed in any of his classes
my favorite professor at BU. he is extremely nice, very knowledgeable, and always helpful. his class is very interesting and gives you a different perspective on life. if you're considering him, definitely take his class, it's worth it :)
Fun and interesting....papers can be hard to fulfill but he is very helpful and understanding
Great professor ! The best writing professor that I had from BU ! Go to his office hours, he is really willing to help !
Professor Pasto always recomends interesting articles and books to read. Go this his office hours and do NOT get late to his class, he hates it !!!
GREAT professor...love this man!..he is so nice and helpful and likes to hear everyone speak up in class to hear everyones point of view...one of the few professors in CAS who actually cares about each of his students' progress and work
Pasto was a really, really good professor- I was really glad to have him as my first college writing professor! He's very clear and helpful. I believe that he really cares about students' work. Class topic got a bit repetitive, but still really interesting. Recommended!
He's a good teacher, but I always came to his office hours, and he wasn't helpful. Although the seminar had a good theme, he made me dislike it more. Good prof, but if you're lost, don't ask him for any help.
AWESOME professor! He engages everyone in the class, goes over your paper with you so you can resubmit it for a new grade, and he helps you come up with topics and find sources/articles for your research papers. We got extensions on our paper because everyone was stressed out and behind. By far the most caring professor I have ever had at BU.
Great reading material, interesting class discussions, very helpful in office hours, and lets you write about pretty much whatever you want on the essays. One of the best classes I've taken at BU
Not an easy A, but an easy B. Didn't think I'd have to work but he ended up giving me B-'s on papers I wrote the night before (which would normally be A-'s). Nice guy, kinda boring class because he doesn't say too much (let's you go early though), enjoyed it overall. No quizzes or tests or in-class essays.
He's a great teacher and a great guy. If you don't ace his class it probably means you didnt really get to know him, or you wrote about dumb things. I took his class on Ancient Near Eastern Lit. Basically the Bible, and he said on the first day of class "We will be trying to Date the Bible." So that's what I wrote about. A. Don't complain he's awes
Pasto is a nice guy and tries to make class interesting. I was really excited for the class, and then was a little disappointed as the semester went by...he is pretty boring and can not lead a "discussion." He just asks.. " so what did you think of the reading?"...Not that difficult, easy B
Reeeeally cool teacher! Loves teaching and is VERY helpful if you ask for help. Will actually go out of his way to help you if you ask nicely. May not even take points for late assgn!! Great feedback on essays. Do the reading though. Before essay is due GO TO HIM to ask what he wants in it, how would he advise you to go about it. VERY HELPFUL!!
He is a great teacher and a great guy! I origianlly signed up for his class because all of the interesting looking ones were filled. He really made me interested in what he was teaching. He knows his topic. He's really helpful and is easy to see outside of class. You will do well if you try. He's a very kind man and will never screw you over.
Sweetest guy, but can't stand the subject. Class is okay, kind of repetitive. As said before, he asks "What do you think of the reading?" and hardly cares if you reply with a "I don't really know." Doesn't know how to lead a discussion but isn't the hardest grader either. Lots of comments on papers, and helpful in office hours. Easy B.
Good teacher and a really nice guy, will give extensions on papers for even the most basic of reasons. Easy grader, and lots of comments. Class is boring if you don't end up watching a movie.
Probably the best professor i've had at BU. He Makes the class so interesting. My best advice would be this: finish your papers a little early, and then let him take a look at it. This way, he will point out the mistakes. If you correct them, you are pretty much guarenteed an A- or A
He is the best professor I have ever met! He always tries to do his best to his students and i bet if you really into his class, you will have both fun and a good grade!
Made a dry subject interesting. basically taught me everything I know about writing (I used to get D's in high school). best Professor at BU
Pasto doesn't like complex sentences, which was an issue for me. Also, he always called on this one girl-ended every other sentence with her name...that bothered me. He was, however, pretty nice and approachable.
A very helpful teacher who gives extensions on papers if necessary or if you kindly ask for it. He knows the subject and some of the books were interesting. Make sure you participate in class occasionally > frequently and go to office hours to show that you care about your papers (he may give you a higher grade). Great professor!
Prof. Pasto is awesome. He is easy to approach and very helpful. If you need help with your papers, simply go to his office hrs, this shows that you care about your grade/the class, something he takes into acct when giving grades. He is a fair grader although he prefers a certain style of writing. Highly recommended. Also make sure to participate.
Simply put: Awesome professor.
He is one of my favorite profs. He tries to help out everyone. Although readings are a little bit hard, he helps you much if you need.
Very kind person who knows his subject. He was really helpful when writing papers, and able to help with research.
Not only a fine teacher, but a really upstanding guy. He'll go out of his way to help you whenever possible. Pasto really enjoys his work and is very knowledgeable. He's always more than willing to help you in his office hours and loves to stop on the street and talk for a moment. I still talk to him after a year of being out of his classes.
Great guy, can't ever picture him being mean or unfair. He's always looking to help students improve their grade and although he has a specific writing style, it ended up being very useful in the end. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, he translates that into the amount of effort you put into the class. Not a hard grader at all if you put in some effort.
Very smart and learned. His soft-talk courtesy shrouds his stringent expectations and grading. He can be quite particular, almost to a fault. When I received my essays, I would make my friend decode his comments (poor handwriting). I did not find class time too useful, however, my writing skills improved.
Prof Pasto is very helpful and understanding. Deff one of the better professors at BU. He is pretty pretty easy grader if you go to office hours and work on your papers with him your bound to get an A. I would deff recommend taking his class, had hims for anthropology of sexaulity and dream theory writing class deff worth your time
He wanted a very by-the-book type of essay. When I would go to office hours to try to understand how to write my papers to get good grades from him, he would simply tell me to reread the writer's manual he made us buy. I'm not a formulaic writer, and he hates complex sentences, so he didn't like my writing style.. therefore I didn't do that well.
Took cultural anthro with Pasto - it was nothing like the description, had a lot to do with gender, sexuality, social issues. Very knowledge prof, nice to talk to outside of class. Watched videos almost every week and discussed - make sure you talk, he encourages it. Wants you to do well, ask questions about topic. Would take again!
LOVED HIM! he was soo nice and helpful. very open minded and willing to listen to all different kinds of opinions. this class (anthro wr 150) was super interesting. if you work hard and are willing to write rewrites then this class is pretty easy. definitely take him for 150.
Pasto was awesome! Although we didn't get through everything that we were supposed to and he was constantly pushing back deadlines, I still enjoyed the class. He is very approachable and will help you a lot at office hours so go to them. You will do well if he knows you are interested in the class.
AMAZING PROF!!! Take writing classes with him if u can! very knowledg. and helpful!
Please take WR100 with this man. He is the kindest, most gentle spirit I have ever met and he really knows about writing! He is a fair but challenging critic but will always be kind and explain anything that is unclear. This class is easy but only because Pasto is so clear and really relates to his students. Office hours are a MUST!
Best professor at BU!
AMAZING PROFESSOR! If you have the chance, take one of his classes. Extremely kind and willing to help with any questions you have.
Discussions are irrelevant and a waste of $1,500 for the class. Pushing his own political and social agendas on vulnerable young minds. Literally talks about sex in each class I have taken from him when it is not related to either class. Open homophobic conservative agenda. Horrendous lecturer. Boring, can hardly hear, irrelevant subject matters.
Great professor! Very reasonable and willing to help :) Explains material clearly and well, and makes content as interesting as possible. Not my favorite class ever, but I really enjoyed Pasto as a professor.
Professor Pasto is the nicest man in the world. He was very understanding of tardiness and late assignments. However it was difficult to understand exactly what he expected from the assignments.
Pasto is such a caring and understanding person! Provides great feedback and is always willing to help and is readily available outside of class. Took him for both WR100 and WR150 and loved both! Take his class!
awesome professor, great class!
The guy is a saint. Probably one of the nicest teachers you'll ever have. AS long as you go to office hours and get your papers revised, he'll tell you exactly what you need to do to succeed. In class is a little dull, but still a great guy.
this rating is purely in defense of a rating you will find posted on 9/28/10. true, sometimes he gets boring and sometimes discussions aren't of much use. however his lectures are very interesting. his soft voice is only due to his soft sweet manner. he's NOT homophobic--he loves the obviously gay guy in our class. never has talked about sex.
I once came to class very late and afterward said, "So sorry; I was up late so I slept through my alarm." He responded with an assuring smile, "Oh I'm very glad you got caught up on some sleep! If you're having trouble managing all your school work we can talk about you turning in our upcoming essay a few days late without penalty.
He is the nicest male teacher I have ever had. He is very intelligent, knows his stuff. Class is a little boring, and he's not great at starting a good class discussion. He is a rather fair grader. He is quite willing to work with his students if anyone needs an extension on an assignment. He is a very kind, friendly, and sympathetic person.
Professor Pasto is the nicest man alive. He's helpful and committed to making sure you understand the material and enjoy the class. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him, do it! So great.
Easy going guy, but difficult grader
He is a nice guy, and the content of the class is very interesting. Participate in class and ask him questions/go to office hours. He responds to e-mails quickly. He graded pretty fairly compared to other english teachers I have had. This class has a lot of busy work.
knows his stuff. Great guy. Makes the class interactive and relevant. Lots of reading....but its interesting and diverse.
I love Professor Pasto. He is super helpful during office hours. The material of the class is interesting. High workload in the beginning but after paper 2, you're basically free for a whole month to work on paper 3. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Had this professor for WR100 & WR 150. Extremely understanding, caring, sincere, and willing to help w/ questions or w/ an essay. Not hard to get an A in either course if you are a good writer and willing to put in effort. Not too much work. Only negative- class discussions are not interesting and often painful, but it was worth it in the end.
Professor Pasto is AMAZING. I'd love to take another class with him!
awesome professor! wr150 is easiest class ONLY if you take his class during SUMMER, only 2 papers instead of 3. nothing else! reminds me when i was in elementary school :D
Pasto is a saint. The class itself is kind of pointless but it was an easy A. I wrote the second paper in 1 night 10 days AFTER it was due and it came back with an A and "great work, you clearly put a lot of work into this." Disclaimer: I am a pretty good writer to begin with, so as long as you know how to write, you should be good. Take his class.
Professor Pasto is not only an amazing teacher, but person as well! He really takes the time to know you as a person and continues to learn more about you. As a professor, he makes sure that his students understand assignments and is extremely clear and helpful. He never hesitates to provide more information if you're unsure about something.
Professor Pasto is a really nice guy, but he's a pretty boring professor. His WR 100 classes can get pretty awkward. If you make an effort to go into his office hours, he'll be a great help. He's a impossibly hard grader (presumably because of the grade inflation), but go in often and he'll recognise that you're trying hard.
Amazing Professor. Probably the most approachable and understanding professor at BU. If you ask for help, he will do anything he can to help you out. Grading can be tough, but if you follow his exercises and assignments, you should be fine. Definitely take this class if you are interested in it!
The class is very well organized! Learned a lot of about the history of Boston, while learning to become a better writer. Enjoyed the class trip to Boston North-end! Expect to write a lot (this is a writing course)! The Professor is very helpful and really wants to help you become a better writer.
Professor Pasto is very understanding when it comes to your specific situation in the class. He will go out of his way to make a conference with you to talk about your writing, and is always flexible with his office hours. Although there is a lot of reading, the essays are manageable. Final paper is huge and worth a large percentage of your grade.
I took the Witchcraft in New England writing course with him. Jimmy P is a cool guy that's really understanding of crazy engineering schedules and tries to develop interest even though it might not be what you're into. Definitely a lot of reading. Always incredibly helpful outside of class and flexible with deadlines if you are drowning in work.
Professor Pasto really helped me enjoy a course that I was not looking forward to taking in the first place. He demands respect but highly respects his students as well. Very sensitive to students' personal situations: flexible about due dates and always willing to go out of his way to help students and accomodate personal interests.
He's the nicest guy in the world and is always willing to help. Very understanding and often cancelled small assignments to allow us to focus on bigger ones. Only problem is his lectures are SO BORING. I wanted to fall asleep, and some of my classmates actually did. Overall though, one of the less challenging WR150s.
The professor is very helpful, he gives very detailed feedback and is available almost all the time. That's not to say that he's necessarily a lenient marker, but if you ask for his feedback, you can definitely boost your grade. He's rather laid back; doesn't mind if your late, and we barely did any reading throughout the semester.
Such a thoughtful and caring professor. Truly cares about the students and wants to see them succeed. I would definitely take more classes with him.
Incredibly understanding and actually wants to help your writing to improve. He gives excellent feedback and encourages his students to pursue their individual ideas by getting creative with assignments. He obviously cares about his students and does his best to engage his students in the material.
Pasto is a great guy, super nice and easy to talk to. He's very helpful if you go in for office hours, and just an interesting person to have a conversation with. His class was at a difficult time in my schedule and he was very flexible with timing for me. Not too hard of a grader, lots of opportunities for you to change your grade if need be.
He's the best! REALLY cares bout his students and will teach you specific writing techniques to improve your academic papers. He grades fairly. If you are a strong writer, you will do well in this course. If you are not a strong writer, no need to fear, he will help you. As long as you go to his office hours, show effort, your grades will be fine.
Great writing professor. He is very accessible out of class and will take the time to help you critique your writing, and ultimately get the grade you want. Note: he is also one of the few writing professors at BU that lets you rewrite your final papers for a better grade. In addition he is very nice and genuinely cares about his students learning.
Professor Pasto is a genuine and approachable professor who wants you to improve as a writer. Put time into addressing his helpful feedback and you will not only get the grade you want - you will also grow as a writer. Highly recommend.
Professor Pasto was one of my favorite professor I had for my first semester at BU. Although assigned texts may require deep reading, Pasto focuses more on improving your writing than ensuring your understanding of class readings. He is super accessible out of class and provides students with an abundance of resources to improve their writing.
Prof. Pasto was not great at holding discussions and gave you weird feedback on your papers, and he clearly had a style of writing he prefered everyone to follow. His class is extremely boring, but if you don't do the readings it's not too big of a deal until you have to write the paper. Easy grader though, as long as you turn in the work on time.
Genuinely one of the nicest professors I had the first semester. Professor Pasto genuinely wanted his students to learn how to write and had very frequent office hours outside of class to give students one on one time to work on their papers.
Great teacher! Lectures could get long, but if you're interested in the topic, then it's totally fine. He gave great feedback and it was easy to meet with him. Meeting with him helped me with my essays. I feel that my writing improved and he was just an overall nice and caring guy. Definitely take his class, I really want to but can't!
Professor Pasto was a great teacher who genuinely wanted his students to become better writers by the end of the course. He did not focus on grades, but he rather focused on classroom learning. His assigned readings were always creative, and we could take our writing in any direction that we chose. He provided clear feedback on all assignments.
Pasto is very caring and is extremely accessible outside of class. He is one of the EASIEST writing professors and only makes you write a few papers, for example, we only had 2 papers the whole semester. He gives great feedback and really wants students to do well. Overall, an extremely caring man and a really EASY class and grader. TAKE PASTO!!!
So, so kind and caring. Extremely available and genuinely willing to help. Gives excellent and useful feedback. I had a wonderful WR150 experience though I had initially dreaded taking the class. Pasto is truly one of a kind and I highly recommend him.
Loved him. Best professor I've had so far at BU. Very kind and supportive with all the assignments. Easy A if you show him you care by showing up and doing all the work.
Good at giving a lot of feedback on essays. Interesting topic choices for reading (also get to watch some cool stuff like Ex Machina). But the schedule also seems unclear at times.
Super caring professor and very understanding of every situation. Made transition to online learning seamless and gave lots and lots of feedback on every paper. Always motivating everyone to do their best. Professor Pasto is also a fair grader and there are not many assignments but every assignment is on very interesting stories and films!
Very accessible class. Only 1 true essay the whole semester, and then an alternative genre assignment and 2nd essay at end of course. He allows you to do multiple drafts and keep editing to improve grade. Kind heart and always smiling. Listens to needs of students. Interesting and accessible course material. Limited amount of HW
Professor Pasto is a very kind, caring, and knowledgeable individual who will always do everything he can in order to help you get the grade that you want. He also isn't very strict, so sometimes people take advantage of him. :(
He is the one of the best professors I have met. He is caring and very good. He gives you extra time to submit the assignments. He is very encouraging. Would definitely take his class again. Readings are a little hard though.
He is one of the best professors I have met. Very caring and friendly. Extends the deadlines for submitting your assignments. Although the readings are a little tough the classes were fun and worth it. Grades are fair.
Professor Pasto was one of the most genuine and sweet teachers I've ever had. He was always willing to help, didn't put too much pressure on us, and always stayed positive. I thought I was going to end his course with a B+, but he said he graded with curves as long as he saw growth and improvement over the semester. Take his class!
Prof Pasto is truly caring and inclusive. He is willing to discuss your paper with you outside of class (even during weekends!), and gives inspirational and valuable feedbacks. When school just went remote, he even opened an extra 8 AM section for international students. Readings are tough, but choose him if you really wanna improve your writing!
He's genuinely nice, take his class!
I took his WR 120 class and I took his WR 150 class as well! He is literally the coolest professor ever! He gives work but he is always caring and helps you with everything! This course is an easy A as long as you put in your efforts. Wish all professors at BU were like him.
Professor Pasto was the sweetest and most considerate professor during the Covid semester. As one of the first professors I had at BU, his class was by far my favorite class and I would genuinely take the class again if I had the opportunity. There's a little bit of reading, but he is so sweet and discussions are so interesting, I would recommend!!
He is 100% amazing. You would be lucky if you took his course. He is easy on grading and chill with all the difficulties you have with this class. He also is a nice person generally. I will retake it if I need to retake 120.
Sweet man who cares about students and is mindful of workload. 2 600-word essays and 1 alt genre essay that I did a short poem for. He gives 3-6 weeks to do essays and lets you email him if you want edits. He will return ur essay w edits that will get u an A if u implement. He assigns a reading each class, but I maybe did 15% of them and felt fine
Professor Pasto is really sweet and genuinely interested in what he teaches. The class may have been a little random in it's structure, but he's super accessible and helpful, and he grades some stuff on participation!
Prof Pasto is an absolutely amazing professor and lecturer! I had him for both WR120 and WR150. His lectures are interesting and he takes time in getting to know his students. He is always accessible outside of class and is able to work with students via Zoom or in-person on revising essays. If you can, take a class with Professor Pasto!
I took WR151 this semester. Professor was really nice and the class was interesting. There were no drawbacks except that there were a bit too many articles to read. Please don't hesitate to take his class!
A very kind, understanding and passionate professor. Although the class was a bit of a drag, he was always enthusiastic and willing to help. The grading is also very clear so you know what you're getting into.
Prof Pasto was extremely kind and understanding. If you can take a writing class with anyone take it with Pasto.
Professor Pasto is an easy grader and cares deeply about history and the texts. His teaching is great, and you will learn (he's funny too!). Not very clear grading criteria, but also doesn't give strict due dates.
Pasto is an incredibly caring and nice professor. It is clear he really values what he teaches. His grading is very clear, and most of the time, if you ask him, he will tell you exactly what you need to do to get an A.
Absolutely amazing professor. Workload was super light, mainly consisting of readings (short stories, novellas, articles — very few long texts). Extremely focused on making sure you actually learn and super caring. Very flexible with due dates and understanding of outside conflicts.
Professor Pasto is incredibly kind and understanding. Although the class can be a bit of a drag, his enthusiasm and willingness to help make it worthwhile. I found unstuck AI super helpful for essay prep - definitely saved me some time.
Great professor. Very kind and understanding. Very passionate and knowledgeable about Italian-American history in Boston. The book is needed because the class is based on it. Only had to write 1 essay and professor's feedback was helpful to achieve an A. There was a fun trip to the North End. Definitely recommend Professor Pasto he's a great guy.
Professor Pasto is great. I took his Anthropology in Science Fiction course. His rough drafts are ungraded, but he gives clear feedback as to what he wants from you. If you do what he asks in the paper and meet with him like he has everyone do for the essays, it's an easy 100. Essay prompts are also very straightforward. If you can, choose Pasto.
Super caring professor
Definitely the best professor at BU. Even though the semester isn't over yet, I can't wait to share how amazing he is. I'm taking his SF class, and it's been such a great experience. He's incredibly patient and supportive. Before this class, I always thought WR was a boring requirement, but now I genuinely enjoy it, all because of his teaching.
Lovely caring man. Class was very easy, readings were very repetitive though, stopped doing them after a while. Only one essay and if you are decent at writing you will get an A. Didn't teach us much about how to improve our writing.
Professor Pasto is great. Super chill. Very kind and sweet guy, very understanding. Coursework was easy but still pretty interesting. He is passionate about the content and made the class interesting but won't make your life difficult. Definitely recommend.
Definitely the best professor at BU. He's a really sweet and nice guy. And he's very supportive. If you're also into Sci-Fi and other stuff he likes, he is also very willing to chat and give recommendations.
I have nothing but phenomenal things to say about this man. He is a complete angel that just melts your heart the second you walk into lecture. He is so personable, wise, caring, and not to mention so funny. He is so easy-going and willing to work with you through every assignment; truly I can not sing his praises enough. 10/10.
Great class! The professor is very enthusiastic and clearly passionate about the lectures and readings, which makes the material engaging. There's a lot of reading, but overall it's manageable and easier compared to other KHC seminars.
He is the actual g.o.a.t. He makes everyone's opinion welcome in the discussions and is very understanding when it comes to late assignments. The only thing is that there's a lot of reading, but expected from WR120. His feedback is very helpful and you'll never have trouble contacting him via email. He's got a caring demeanor. Overall cool dude.
I love Professor Pasto! If you can take him, please do. Such a chill guy and class. Readings were incredibly long at times (for Anthropology of Religion), but you don't really have to do it (just know enough to add to the discussion). Does cold call at times, but the class is so small that it doesn't really matter (not going to force u to answer).
I adore Prof. Pasto. He's a great professor who gives great feedback on essays and assignments. I talked to him a couple times in office hours and hes just a great guy. He's always willing to talk to students about what they're passionate in. Lots of reading (Athro. thru Science Fiction) but it was manageable and expected so whatever. 10/10
