awesome organic prof!
not bad if you are willing to work
No Comments
He is not the easiest O chem teacher from what I hear. He gives one question reading quizes every non-test class period (9 are dropped) pretty much so you won't fall behind on your reading if you don't want to lose points. Four 100 pt exams, six 25 pt quizes, 150 pt final. His notes and lectures are rushed and he talks very fast.
He's a great guy. Learn to love tutoring and office hours. His tests are HARD but if you work hard you can do well.
Seriously the best professor I have ever had. Ever. He made ochem interesting and almost enjoyable. He's this jolly guy with a beard and a corny sense of humor, but it helps you learn the material. I don't think I've ever learned so much in a class. He puts old tests on reserve so if you practice those you can ace the class, easily. He's awesome!
Goes way too fast through lectures, does not give examples outside of his pre-written notes, last two tests are incredibly hard. He knows what he's talking about very well, but he doesn't do a good job of teaching those that don't. If you're chemistry savvy, you'll be okay. If you're less than stellar, prepare to suffer.
Such a great professor, I recommend Pennington if you're willing to work. One of the greatest teachers I've ever had.
He is amazing! He does go fast on his lectures, but I find it helpful to stay awake and engaged. His notes are very easy to understand. I would recommend this professor if you want to LEARN not just get the class over with.
An engaged professor with a fabulous beard! Even though his class isn't the easiest in the world (I blame the subject itself), he makes the class bearable. He has notes that can be bought at the MSC, and you don't have to buy the textbook per-say, since its online with OWLS. Have an iclicker though, because he was daily chem. questions every class!
He is my most favorite professor of all time! Makes lecture very engaging and interesting. He is a very nice guy and genuinely cares about all his students (he attempts to learn everyone's name). The material and exams are not easy, though. If you're willing to put in the work, then take him! You will not regret it!
Enjoys helping his students. Always willing to talk, even if it's not about organic chemistry.
Awesome guy. Each of his tests are very difficult, but he definitely tries his best to prepare you. In the end, I had to get tutoring and use things like chegg and clutch prep to fully understand the tough concepts. I would definitely recommend his class if you want to really learn orgo!
Work every single one of his practice exams. Go to him about EVERY SINGLE thing that you do not understand. Do not let yourself get behind. Practice the mechanisms every day . Do not get intimidated by his exams. Never miss class. Go to the help sessions; my grades got much better after going! PRACTICE PRACTICE; listen to him. HE is the BEST!
Do not slack off 4 the 1st exam even though it is a review. Work all the extra practice problems in the notes and go 2 him about the 1s u are not sure abt. Work every single practice exam and understand everything. Practice the synthesis and mechanism daily. I made an A wo a curve and had a horrible foundation in chemistry going n2 his class.
Dr. Pennington has an accurate reputation for being the hardest OChem prof at TAMU - but he's also the BEST. Not only is he a talented teacher, he actually cares and goes consistently above and beyond to help students out. Still a TOUGH class but if you're stuck he WILL help. Generous with partial credit on exams. Class curved to 75% average.
took him for 227 and now in 228. He ceases to amaze me with his teaching. Yes, he is the hardest but his teaching makes up for it. Expect to work by studying everyday & practicing mechanisms. U will get confused but if you go to him he will help you. But you must be willing to learn and have to be proactive.
One of the best professors I've had. He's tough but it's worth it.
Dr. Pennington is difficult. He makes you actually learn the material rather than just spit our worthless facts. He will be more difficult than most chemistry professors, but he is much better at explanation as well as actually educating the students than any professor i have encountered. He takes work but will help you out.
Here is what I did 2 make an A in both of his classes. I studied the notes everyday, including doing all practice problems. Start practice exams a week before examsenough time 2 ask him questions and covered enough material in class to be able to do them. some weeks I spent 20 hours on this class. What you put in reflects your grade.
To do well in 227/228, go over your notes each day. He provides fill in the blank notes at the beginning of the semester(s). Take advantage of his office hours and help sessions. Attend SI sessions (detailed recap of material covered in class). On exams, partial credit is offered and he provides practice exams for each of the 4 in-class exams.
I absolutely loved Pennington and would take him again in a heartbeat. He actually makes sure you know the material which is good if you are planning on taking the MCAT. He is a little harder than the other profs but if you listen to his advise and go to office hours if you need help it's totally do-able. I HIGHLY recommend him
Reading questions every day, you read, you get the point. More in depth than most professors, so A+ is more effective with other (older) professors. Great lectures, he does the chemistry roadshow and his enthusiasm for chemistry is obvious. OWLs are more reasonable (shorter) than other professors, but exams are more difficult. Great for pre-med.
Make sure to attend all the SI sessions because it definitely what help people pass the class. He has his own notes that you fill in because he talks fast. Made me fall in love with OCHEM, would take him again. Definitely feel like I understood the material rather than just memorizing.
For the love of all that is holy take Dr. Pennington. I had him for 227 and got stuck with another prof for 228, and I can't tell you how much better he was. I still remember all the 227 material like the back of my hand. The exams are difficult, but he is so stellar at presenting the information that he is worth it. You will truly learn o-chem.
He provides fill in the blank notes and he really explains the material so it feels like you're actually learning something. However, his exams were way too long and difficult. He does let you do test corrections, but it's only for one problem and it's only 3 points back.
I loved Dr. Pennington, if you plan on taking the MCAT, you really ought to take him. He is hard because he actually teaches Ochem, whereas some of the other professors just teach you basics or teach it incorrectly just so you get it. He's a little harder but you learn the material in the long run. I would def take him again
He teaches with a passion for o chem. Honestly the best professor Ive ever had, everyone said O chem was the hardest course to take at a university but he taught it very well. My final grade will not reflect on his teaching but my lack of practicing the material daily. I would take him again if given the chance.
Good professor. Very available outside of class. Lectures work through a notepack. Reading questions via iClicker at the beginning of each class for points, but a few are dropped in case you miss one. Advice: Read relevant section before lecture, do the OWLs, work practice exams, pay attention in lecture, utilize your study group, study.
PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF AND TAKE DR. PENNINGTON. I had him for 227 and couldn't get him for 228 and ended up taking GG. Dr. P is SO much better than GG. I absolutely hated having GG and didn't learn anything - I could learn more from Dr. P in one conversation than I learned in the entire semester with GG. Save yourself please. Don't make my mistake
Dr. Pennington was, by far, the best professor I have had yet. He explained O-Chem in a way that was understandable with fill in the blank notes and lots of practice examples. He also provides practice exams that are very similar to the actual exam. He has office hours every day, and I would encourage everyone to utilize them!
He goes superrrrr fast with everything he does. His tests are quite long for a short amount of time, and you have to know how to prioritize to finish. He's super nice and will help with every and anything, but it also beyond hard compared to other professors. I followed the ratings when I signed up, but everyone has told me it's a mistake.
Best prof I have encountered at Texas A&M. His class is not easy but it isn't impossible either. Great lecturer very passionate and energetic. Helpful office hours, genuinely cares about his students. Be ready to work fast on exams, but that is true for all Ochem classes. Take Pennington if you want to learn about chemistry.
Take Dr. Pennington if you have to take OChem! Especially if you have any more chemistry afterwards. He is a little harder than some of the other profs, but his class is enjoyable and worth the challenge that comes with it. Take Pennington!
Dr. Pennington's way of conveying material is so effective. He overstates key ideas every week and nothing about his class is unfair. His tests are routine and nothing on them is unexpected since he posts past exams online. Above all he cares so much about how he teaches and the way his students learn.
He is definitely a professor that is there for you. His lectures are great, and he's a really funny guy, but he does go quickly through the material and his tests are very difficult. It is a ton of application, and if you aren't solid on what you're doing it will be hard. I wouldn't take him again because ochem isn't my thing, but I did learn a lot
Amazing professor, definitely one of the best to take for organic chemistry. The only thing to watch out for is that his tests are tricky, but he is fair so if you know the material, you will be fine. His lectures are great and you have to be there anyways because he does a clicker question. Boy does he wake you up at 8am. Very good in office hours
Dr. Pennington was a great professor. He was very enthusiastic and loves his job. He is one of the harder OCHEM professors those and his tests are challenging. He had 4 midterm tests, a final, OWL homework, and clicker quizzes. If you're trying to do well on the MCAT or other exam I would recommend him over anyone else. You will earn your grade.
Dr. Pennington is super enthusiastic, very caring, and in my top 3 profs at TAMU. His exams are very similar to the practice exams he gives and he is very thorough. He is touted as one of the hardest ochem profs but I loved taking him. He reopened OWLs for me when I had an issue and he was always helpful during class or in office hours.
Take. Pennington. Yes he's hard, but he's such an AMAZING teacher. He has office hours literally everyday and really wants you to learn and do good. I had GG first semester and did okay, but I felt like I left lectures learning so much more in Pennington (I didn't flow w/ GG teaching style). 10/10 would recommend this prof.
Pennington is a great lecturer and has been doing it forever. He is very articulate and constantly reminds you of the basics and main points he wants you to remember. This being said his tests are difficult and require preparation but since he is a good teacher it balances out.
Ochem is hard as it is. Pennington tries to help out as much as possible. He offers extra credit too. Come to class or you won't understand the material, he also has clicker questions that count as a grade (1/2 credit for answering). STUDY as much as you can, his tests are long and if you don't know what you're doing you won't finish.
SI is non-negotiable. I would have failed had my SI leader not been AMAZING. I took Pennington for OCHEM 1 and 2, he frequently teaches material that the book does not cover so you must attend class. Dr.P is a good choice though, have fun knowing way more than your friends in other OCHEM classes.
Dr. Pennington is AMAZING! Lots of people say he is hard but I think it is just how Ochem is. He makes sure to explain all important points and gets you into the habit of studying early and in a study group. He is really funny and passionate about his job. If you want a professor that would actually teach, take him!
Pennington was really really good at teaching the material, this is just a hard class. Do the reading and all the OWL and he posts 4 old exams for each test so study hard. An A is completely possible, it is just about how much effort you put in.
Dr. Pennington is a great teacher and great man. The course pack is absolutely essential to purchase. Read the book too, because the clicker questions add up. He gives you plenty of practice problems for the exams/final. Always used fun examples and demonstrations to illustrate the content. A caring professor who genuinely wants you to learn.
I will be writing 2 comments. I took JP in F18. Grade comprised of 4 exams, a final, online hw and quizzes for every chptr, iclicker (at start of class, part of grade), and bonus. Bonus: explaining a wrong answer on each exam (post exam), networking a group study, and end of semester evaluation. (15pts/729 total possible pts). He talks fast. -JF
Pennington is a great teacher, he just goes very fast. Studying every day is how you will get an A (because it is completely possible). He diverges from the textbook so you have to get the course pack and go to class. He is by far the professor that you will learn the most from, and he does try to make the class interesting.
Really enjoyed this semester with Pennington! When I was choosing between professors half a year ago I had the option of GG or Pennington, and ultimately chose Pennington since I've heard he's the best teacher for ochem. His tests aren't as difficult as people make them out to be since he gives 4 practice tests and everything comes from his packet.
Dr. Pennington is a fantastic professor. It's necessary to start studying about a week in advance for the exams if you want to feel completely prepared for them, but they aren't the hardest thing in the world if you truly study. I am taking him again for ochem 2. Take Pennington, you'll learn more than your friends in other classes.
I picked Pennington after hearing that he was the best teacher. That may be true, I think he's pretty good and he cares about helping students. However, I honestly preferred last semester with Serrano as at least her tests were reasonable. I got about 10 points off the first test just for not showing work but having the right answers.
Dr. Pennington is a fantastic professor. You will have to study hard for the tests, but the practice tests are very representative of the real deal. I took him for ochem 1, made an A+, and I have had no trouble with him in ochem 2. Take him if you want to actually learn something! He's the BEST.
First mistake I made was going from GG to Pennington, do not follow in my footsteps. He is a great prof and really cares about his students but also expects you to study 3 hours a day, not even kidding these are his words. Unless you have had his for chem 227 or are just a natural chem genius I would take someone else. You have been warned.
This professor has by far the hardest tests of any ochem professor here, and worst of all, there are no tutoring places that offer sessions for him because of how unique his tests are. Avoid unless you are naturally gifted in chemistry because you'll struggle more than is needed
Amazing professor who you will learn more from than any other prof in my opinion. An A in his class however is extremely difficult.
Ended up dropping because of how bad I did on the 3rd exam. 4 exams and a final along with OWL assignments for grades. If you miss more than 8 clickers they start counting against you. He talks extremely fast and assumes you are always in an understanding of the concepts like you've taken the course before. His expectation is you study everyday
A lot of people say that Pennington's a really difficult OCHEM prof, however the way that he lectures prepares you for the difficulty level of his tests. Along with this he doesn't go too fast and he allows you to keep up with him and ask questions. He gives you old tests to study and you can ask how to do them in office hours and help sessions
Dr. P was a great prof. Very enthusiastic, but he will also certainly yell at your class loud enough to make you pee your pants at least once a week. He releases 4 past exams for every midterm that make great study resources. His tests are hard but very fair and reflect the material he teaches. You will defintiely have to study and put in the work.
Dr. Pennington's class is difficult but he is an amazing professor who you will learn a lot from. He provides 4 old exams for each test as practice and those are helpful. He does hold weekly help sessions and has a ton of office hours you can get help in. He goes in depth but you will know the material well by the end.
Dr. Pennington is the best prof!! He makes an effort to know his students and make himself available for office hours. The practice tests are a lifesaver and really help for exams! This class is challenging, but he explains everything SO well. If you study, you will do well.
Professor Pennington knew my name and we had never met. This statement alone proves how dedicated he is towards his students and the material he teaches. He may ask a lot from his students, but a whole classroom's worth of effort is unmatched to his own when it comes to organic chemistry.
This is a really hard class, the hardest I've taken yet at A&M. Dr. Pennington is a pretty funny lecturer, and he does move fast. The notes have a lot of information, but make sure you understand why each reaction happens and know the reactions. Practice the old exams, and always refresh your memory on old reactions, but he's awesome!
While a lot of people say Pennington is the hardest OCHEM professor, I honestly feel the opposite. While his tests are more difficult then the other professors, he teaches you how to take them and how to do well on them. He gives you old exams that are sooo helpful for studying. I had him for both OCHEMs and got an A both times. He is the best
Don't take Pennington. Especially if you didn't have him for 227. His tests are extremely difficult, boarding on unfair. They are so hard that the tutoring services don't even offer help for his classes. The only good thing about his tests are that you can earn partial credit. DONT TAKE HIM. You will regret it. I know I do.
There is no doubt O-Chem is a funnel course to remove weaklings. Dr. Pennington is known to be much more challenging than the other organic profs but he is an amazing prof dedicated to the success of his students. If you watch videos/attend class, do HW and study weekly or multiple days ahead there is a chance you will succeed, but no promises.
He cares a lot about his students and is very reasonable. He puts in a lot of effort to make sure students all have their questions answered. Moderate and fair homework amount every week. Offers extra credit opportunities. Class participation is mandatory to make sure everyone has an understanding of what's going on. Overall excellent professor.
With COVID his classes are synchronous and you HAVE to go to class to get participation points/ reading questions . Before every class you watch almost an hours worth of pre lecture and class is for practice problems, so it feels like a 6 hour course. If you study his practice exams and dedicate a lot of time to this class you can get an A
He is very caring and explains concepts in a very understandable manner, but get ready to spend your weekends studying organic chemistry because if you don't properly study for his tests, no amount of partial credit will save you. They are 90% free response, with some circle the answer, and require a high-level understanding of the material.
Dr. Pennington is a great professor. However, he is harder than any of the other professors in the sense that you REALLY gotta know your material. This is not a class for lazy people (I learned the hard way). Also, nothing was changed to accommodate for COVID (difficulty wise), which is hard for students dealing SO much during this time :(
He is hands down one of the best profs Ive ever had. Took him for both semesters. Best decision ever. He made OCHEM so fun and I looked forward to his classes. OCHEM is hard work but I promise that he is the best prof out there for the class. Im in BICH right now and wish I had him to teach me, he is a really gifted teacher
Dr. Pennington is the best professor I've had. His way of teaching ochem made me enjoy the subject so much that all the time spent studying was very doable. To do good in the class you have to understand the material quite well. He is super accessible outside of class. He has office hours 4 days a week twice a day. He truly cares about his students
He knows a lot. And expects you to as well. Study lecture and textbook, and you still might not get an A. Don't listen to ratings that say he will help prepare you for mcat. Kill that crab after you see it crawl, don't plan ahead. Either way he is the hardest, and unnecessarily, even for DAT! Get an A in this class with any other prof! AVOID AAC.
You can tell that Dr. Pennington is extremely intelligent and passionate about chemistry, but he expects his students to be as well. There is at least an hour of lecture to watch before EVERY synchronous lecture, you have to get the class participation questions RIGHT to get attendance points, and the tests are a nightmare. You've been warned.
Pennington is very kind and cares about his students' well being, however, he makes his exams way too hard for no reason (8 pgs frq). He tries to answer questions and help as much as he can but it's not enough. He makes you watch 30-60 min videos BEFORE each lecture. Attendance is clicker questions but you must get them right to get credit
Huge tips, if you aren't willing to study at least 1 hr or more every day, willing to be prepared before all the lectures, attend all lectures, and overall put in a huge amount of effort, you will fail. He is a tough professor but he CARES A LOT if he sees you put in the effort. Go to office hours and get help. Tough class but a solid professor.
Dr. Pennington's class may be the hardest class you'll take in college. But he is an incredibly human who cares about his students. All resources, including himself, are very accessible to receive a good grade. The content is very difficult but he relates all information to applicable context in real life. You can tell he thoroughly cares about us.
Ok listen. The man is nice, he will respond to emails. But if you do not have a firm understanding, you will immediately get pulled under. His tests are very long with very little time. I would quite frankly pick any other professor if you are not 100% confident in your chem abilities.
Pennington seems to care about his students, if they are doing well. He is a great prof and provides awesome notes, but the exams are excessively hard (11 pages of synthesis in 50 minutes). Went to his office hours for advice about failing an exam... told me to q drop and retake ochem one. Only take him if you are super confident in ochem.
Be warned. Ochem is HARD and Pennington does not make it any easier. A lot of HW, required participation points and Free Response Exams. If you are willing to put in the work and time, his style will help you for a lot of the upper-level BIMS courses and into professional school. This is a weed out class so just be prepared to go all in.
Dr. Pennington is a tough grader, but overall I learned more from him than from any other chemistry professor Ive had. Prepare to study a lot and take good notes.
PSA: DO NOT TAKE PENNINGTON FOR 228 IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE HIM FOR 227. His exams are entirely free response and attendance is iclicker but must be correct. if you put in the work, utilize the resources he provides, and manage your time wisely this class is not impossible. Definitely the professor you want if you want to be prepared for Med/Vet School.
People say that Dr. Pennington is a harder professor but you learn more information and get better prepared in his course. You literally can't fall behind in this class, so unless you have a crazy work ethic and dying desire to learn ochem (which I really didn't), I would not recommend taking this class. You barely have time to take exams.
Clicker questions, he answers emails really quick, BUT, I just could not learn in his format. He'd simply show examples and give practice problems, but I needed to actually work through them step by step with explanation rather than see pictures. If you study, you'll get a good understanding, but not recommended for non-chem majors
It has already been mentioned but if you didn't take him for ochem1 I would highly recommend not taking him for ochem 2. Many who didn't take him the semester before dropped in my class due to his level of intensity. Study hard and get help. DO NOT FALL BEHIND! It is doable but it needs work just like ochem 1.
This class sucked. Pennington was not helpful during COVID at all. Something changed from first to second semester with him. He expected 3 hours of asynchronous videos before a 50-minute lecture, OWL for HW as well. WAY TOO MUCH FOR 3 HOUR CREDIT! Was grumpy during class, and graded harshly. DO NOT TAKE PENNINGTON. Literally, take anyone else.
O chem is a tough class but Dr. Pennington is enthusiastic and explains concepts well. He also requires a course pack that makes it so that you can't really miss any important concepts that will be on exams. The downside is that he does not provide a key for practice problems in the course pack. However he does post previous exams and keys
I did not learn well from Pennington's teaching style. Seemed we were always rushing and he would work through 2-3 problems in class and leave the rest for us to do without any way to check them. The practice exams are helpful but I did not find him helpful and seemed to OCHEM hard as possible. I would recommend anyone else.
Dr. Pennington is a great professor. I took him for 227 and 228, and let me tell you I could not imagine taking ochem with any other professor. Of course, ochem is not easy, and it takes work. Be prepared to study about a week in advance for each exam, and use the practice exams to prepare. His office hours and help sessions are great!
if you want to actually learn ochem take pennington. yes his tests are all free response & long but he more than prepares you for them. ochem is a hard class but rly doable u just gotta put in the work. he really teaches you everything, and if you dont understand go to his office hours and especially help desk sessions. if ur pre med take him!
Pennington has a great rating on RMP but a not-so-great teaching style. Speeds through lectures and works very few relevant problems in class. Leaves the rest to you with no way to check them. Other profs gave students helpful videos to watch, while we only had OWL HW and the textbook as a resource. Small curve relative to other profs.
I absolutely adore Dr. Pennington. I enjoyed his lectures, and while he does go through the material quickly, I felt like he explained the material as thoroughly has he could for the given amount of class time. Do practice problems in the notes and GO TO OFFICE HOURS. His office hours made everything understandable to me. Probably my fav prof ever!
Felt like he rushed through everything this semester, and taught an entire chapter of content the day before an exam and expects you to master the content. With his teaching style you need to self teach yourself the content to be able to follow along in class. Personally wasn't a fit for me.
I took Dr. Pennington's class, because everyone recommended him for premed students. However, his classes seemed very rushed and, unfortunately, his teaching style wasn't for me. Although there were plenty of opportunities for practice I wish that we did more guided practice in class, since ochem is a harder subject to grasp.
Such high ratings, but such terrible teaching. Does not teach mechanisms and expects you to do outside work. His test questions is like reading a novel and bragging about his research before the actual question pops up and the "hints" provided on the tests confuse you. Take Krish or Serrano instead.
great rating on rmp, but only take him if you're ready to work on ochem nonstop the entire semester 24/7. obviously you have to work for your grade with any ochem class, but good luck because my entire semester was genuinely so awful
Get ready to move at the speed of light. You will never be able to follow along and leave class absolutely confused everyday. The homework doesn't line up with the lectures. DO NOT take this professor.
I took Pennington for 1&2. I deeply regret taking again. He talks so fast he can't keep up with himself, there's a quiz question every day, the OWL doesnt line up with class (required). He will not help you, doesnt curve exams & "curves" the class at the end. He used to be good, not anymore. I spend >30hrs/wk & still fail exams. take anyone else.
He is a very good teacher, but does it rather quickly. His tests are probably the hardest of any ochem professor, but everything he teaches he tries to relate to real world things so its not just things you're learning for no reason. Very good for pre-med.
I took Dr P for 227 and 228 and he is a great ochem prof. Ochem is a hard class but if you put in the work it can be smooth. His teaching style isnt for everyone and the tests are all free response but he gives A LOT of study material and opportunity to get points back after. The whole class is curved at the end too. I love this man 3
Dr. Pennington genuinely is a good professor and cares about his students. However, I do not personally feel I would take him again due to how difficult his exams are in relation to the depth that is covered in class. I sought outside tutoring for this class, worked on all provided materials and practice exams to study, and still managed to fail.
As are earned, passing can be reached with minimal effort. Show up to class, engage with lecture, use office hours, and do as many of the released old exams as possible.
I had professor pennington for both ochem I and ochem 2. His teaching style is very fast paced, and he leaves a lot of examples in the note packet blank but he now provides the key to them. It took a while to get used to his class, but you have to put alot of work outside in order to succeed.
Dr. Pennington is a very nice man, but his tests are all free-response and very difficult. You only have 1 hour to answer 10+ pages of free-response questions. He also does not curve and does not post lecture notes anywhere. There are reading questions every single day for a grade. He goes through the lecture notes at lightning speed.
Dr. Pennington comes across as a great, animated, and enthusiastic professor during lectures, however in office hours it's like being around a completely different person and is generally unhelpful. The way the class is curved leaves you in the dark and stressing the entire semester. I would highly recommend taking someone else if you can.
Very fast paced lectures and exams are very long and difficult. He did curve at the end to 86 for an A. Requires a lot of learning on your own and practice daily. Starting to study a week before the exam is not a good idea. Office hours are very helpful. A very fun and energetic prof.
Dr. Pennington is a nice person although I found his teaching methods challenging. I was having trouble keeping up with the notes in class and trying to understand it. I did excellent in general chemistry and found the transition hard. I understand there is a lot of material to cover but it was taught so fast I couldn't even grasp anything.
do NOT take this professor. his lectures go super fast that if you ask for him to repeat notes or ask for notes after class he doesn't "save" them. long and hard exams and expects you to memorize reactions/mechanisms completely on your own with barely any in class practice or instruction. rude and unhelpful outside of class during office hours.
Loved this prof!!! Tests were hard but fair, he posts lots of previous exams to study. Homework is pretty fair, and the reading assignments are just a few sections long. He is very passionate about chemistry and is super sweet. I'm taking him again next semester for ochem 2.
Pennington's a good prof who communicates material well but quickly. If you are struggling, office hours are a good resource. He posts 4 practice exams to help you prepare so you know what to expect, and few practice problems inside the note packet. Be prepared to spend a ton of effort on this class (flashcards help!). i'd 100% take him again.
A question over the textbook everyday at the beginning of class, in class quiz once a week. Clear what you are expected to know, but moves very quickly during lecture. Does not post notes or lectures so you have to pay attention. Has plenty of practice tests, and grades very fairly. Super passionate, but he does tend to yell.
I LOVE PENNINGTON!!! I skipped most of the lectures so I asked my friends to send me the notes and studied them and they were pretty easy to understand. One question from the reading every day, however, you get 0.5/1pt for answering so it wasn't a requirement. Tests were hard, but fair. Just understand the notes and memorize mechanisms = A.
Dr. Pennington is seriously one of the best professors I've ever had. OCHEM is hard, but his exams are very fair (I think) and you get multiple practice exams before the exam that has the questions in the same format as his exams. He has office hours almost every day and explains things very well if you need help. I would 100% take him again!
Dr. Pennington was a really cool person, but I regret taking him for 228 having taken a different prof for 227. His 228 class assumed you'd had him for 227, so I felt so behind in the beginning. The pacing was really fast, and with almost no in-class practice/examples, I struggled a lot in exams. Maybe better if u take him for 227+228.
Do not take Pennington if you didn't take him for 227. He moves lightning fast and doesn't curve any of the tests. He expects you to know things from 227 that you may or may not have been taught depending on your professor. Very few practice problems in class so you are expected to learn how to do stuff on your own.
I loved having Pennington for both ochems. He is a really smart and funny man. ochem is very challenging already, but he did his best to make it as simple as possible. I highly recommend him for 228 but only if you took him for 227. His course is harder than other profs but you learn and remember more. Recommend if you are wanting to go premed.
OChem 2 is hard, that's just the class. However, Dr. Pennington made it doable. He was always entertaining and kind to his students. The exams are tough but he gives you ample study material to succeed, and is always available. Overall one of the sweetest professors I've ever met and really wants his students to succeed.
Amazing professor, gives lots of partial credit on exams (all FR tho). Goes crazy fast but if you usually take notes, you'll be able to keep up. Daily textbook material q's for points, weekly quizzes, assignment before every exam. He really cares about his students and is always available! Ochem is a hard class tho, you still have to put in work,
I took him S23 and I had to q-drop because I was going to fail. His exams were long and his lectures were even worse. Great guy, but his practice exams were never representative of the exam--take Dr. Krish instead, I'm getting an A in his class. As a person who's bad at test taking, Dr. Krish makes it so easy, Pennington makes it so difficult.
Best educator I've had in my entire life hands down. Gives amazing lectures that just ~make sense~ gives many practice problems in notes and 4 previous exams to study -- should be no reason you fail this class if you study AHEAD of time. Go to office hours, class, do the practice problems in the notes, take the previous exams-- you'll cruise.
Nice guy but the way he explained things never made sense to me. I took him for both 227 and 228, hoping something would click eventually, but it never did. Made a B in both classes. Hardest classes ive ever taken. If i got the chance to retake ochem i would just take serrano. Her class seemed a lot more doable, and everyone i knew made an A
I did not take Dr. Pennington for Chem 227 so it took me a while to understand his teaching style and he likes to refer to a lot of things from 227. I didn't like his notes. He provide a lot of resources for you to be successful in this course. Exams are straightforward. Always attend class.
Take Pennington for 227 and 228. His class is organized and he is very fair and a kind person. He is a super thoughtful person and wants us to succeed and understand the material. He moves fast, but you get used to it and he provides fill in the blank notes so it's easy to follow along. Do well on the practice tests and you'll do well on the exams.
I personally struggled greatly and I thought he was very unorganized and rushed. Class was 50 minutes and not flipped so he would talk at incredibly fast speeds to get through the notes and many times not finish the notes and leave them blank. His exams were so much harder and longer than from other professors and I had to A+ Tutoring very often.
I had Dr. Pennington for OCHEM 1 and 2 and failed every single exam, however, passed both classes with a C. As a student-athlete my schedule was pretty extreme, but Dr. Pennington did everything he could to work with me, support me, and help me pass. He's the best professor I have ever had at A&M. His class is hard, OCHEM is hard, but he will help.
Fast-paced, but great lectures and I was never bored. I did not have him for CHEM 227. He has SO many office hours and is very available to help and very understanding if you have a work conflict or something. Hard class and I think the exams were harder than most other professors. Lots of synthesis. I failed 3/4 exams + the final and I passed.
Simply too many things at once, and too many exams. Feels like you are constantly prepping for the next quiz or trying to finish another homework instead of being able to take the time and study in ways that work for you. Great lectures, this is just one case that felt like too much of a good thing to be effective, making a hard class harder.
He is an incredible lecturer that really cares for his students. He has office hours almost every day of the week and help sessions once a week. He moves VERY fast, but if you don't understand something he has so many opportunities for you to ask questions that you won't fall behind as long as you use your resources. Practice tests are like exams!
This professor showed me that I was not the reason I was failing my past chem courses, it was freshman year and bad professors. Pennington inspired me to stay in school and I loved how he started every day with enthusiasm. The class is tricky if you do not study. And DO NOT put off the homework until the last min.
Pennington's class is fast-paced but engaging. His lectures make complex topics click, and he's always available to help. Use the practice exams and unstuck study to ace this challenging course.
Dr. Pennington is a great professor! He cares a lot for his students and is clear about his expectations. As long as you keep up with the textbook readings and actively learn throughout the lecture his exams should be a breeze. The exams are completely fair, plus he gives partial credit. As long as continuous effort is applied, you will do well.
Dr Pennington is the BEST. If you put in the time and effort to keep up with the material this class is not difficult. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, he is so helpful. Just don't fall behind or leave studying for the last day and you will do great. Exams are very fair, he will never test something he did not teach. I love him so much he is so kind. Take him!!
I had him for Ochem 1 and 2. He is the best professor I've had so far. He cares that his students do well and he has engaging lectures. He tends to move fast during lectures but you can get used to the pace. Going to office hours will help!! Do the practice exams and practice problems in the note packets and you'll do well.
Dr. Pennington was a great professor! His note packets were super useful and studying wasn't very difficult. The most important part of the class is being on top of all of the ochem work (i.e. Aktiv, labs, etc.). He is really funny and his tests were very similar to his past exams, but sometimes you really have to churn your brain for the answer.
One of the most incredible profs at this school. Yes Ochem is hard, but this man teaches it so incredibly well. I genuinely feel bad for students at other schools, because they'll never get to experience the glory of learning organic chemistry from this guy. Hard class, fair grader. Office hours very helpful. 13/10
In all my years of chemistry, I've learned the most from Dr. Pennington. Yes, he can be loud at times but he is very entertaining and teaches topics thoroughly. Past exams and fill-in notes are your best friend in this course.
This is an incredibly difficult course, but Pennington's lecture style and course structure makes learning OChem possible. I have not understood chemistry on a more thorough and fundamental level than being in his class. An 86 is an A, homework and attendance will boost your grade, and if you spend enough time, you can do well in his class
Hes a good prof, and loves to teach, and is accessible almost always, but he does make you learn so much material on your own time. Mechanisms and learning them on your own will take up all of your time. He crams extra for every test by making you learn things on your own time and teach yourself. Go to office hours and review sessions.
Caring professor, but did not enjoy his lecture style. Does VERY few examples so you will have to learn outside of class. Speeds through notes (and lectures are not recorded!). Very loud (not fun during 8 am lecture). He does explain things well during class but the lack of examples is killer for all the reactions (I had Collins for 257/ochem1).
Don't let his act fool you, awful lecturer. Very animated and fun to talk to but only auditory style teaching. If you're not an auditory learner, you're doomed. "I'm not gonna teach you this because we have to go fast, so do it on your own later" is always said on the hardest topics that make up the exam. He won't help you on them outside of class.
He does things a little different but theres a good reason for everything. His exams might be on the harder side but hes the best lecturer Ive ever had. Had Schaefer for 257 and didnt realize how much she didnt teach us until I had Pennington. Never opened the textbook and got above a 70% on all 5 exams. Just made sure to do the practice problems.
I was scared of this class, but Dr. Pennington made it extremely easy for me. He provides fill in the blank notes, weekly review sessions, plenty of practice, and clear expectations for exams. He had extra credit opportunities, textbook reading questions every class and practice exam questions every Friday (unless there's an exam). Overall lovely.
Pennington Made me realize that it was not me that was the issue in chem, I just needed an inspiring professor. If you have him consider yourself lucky to be blessed. But do not mistake his kindness for easiness, he only rewards the people who truly put in effort.
Pennington's class was very challenging, but he made sure to give you all the material you may need to succeed. He does all he can to prepare you, and the rest is on your own. Ochem is a hard class, so dont expect an easy A, but if you put in the time and work you will do fine. 87 is an A, no curves or EC
I think Pennington is a super helpful prof considering this is ochem. The class itself is hard, but he gives a lot of opportunities for you to get help. He has weekly review sessions, in person and on zoom, and he gives you practice tests for every exam. Overall he's a cool guy and cares about his students.
Attendance is taken for a grade (although it isn't mandatory) and there will be several small extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. His exams were moderate, he gives you past exams which really helps.
He made a hard class bearable! His notes, examples, and practice tests are so useful. The practice tests are VERY similar to the tests which were also reasonable, and didn't feel unfair. Dr. Pennington truly cares about his students and wants to help you understand the material.
Dr Pennington is very sweet, but his class is incredibly difficult. The hardest ochem prof by far. He is very accessible outside of class though, and is always willing to help his students! the amount of work for this course is egregious - difficult quizzes every week and LOTS of homework, so not a lot of time to study in way that works best for u
this professor is tough but fair. he is clear on what he expects, though beware, it is a lot.
