he is one of the best professors i ever had, he is easy and nice i loved going to his class
I am taking his class during the summer, he loves to pile on the work. I do not know how he is in the regular term, but in 4 weeks time we have had to do a presentation, a midterm, paper, and the final is cumulative.
Although there's a lot of reading, he makes it simple. He goes through each reading specifically. He's very down to earth and even though it was the summer and there was a lot of work, he was organized and related everything to us very clearly.
im taking his class during the regular term. he is very understandable and funny. if you are a big fan of pop quizess, presentations(although he spared us of those because its an elective class not core-slightly diff.), then you will like this class.

This is a wonderful professor and I HIGHLY reccommend him for Core 1...he's extremely well versed in this field of study and he's hilarious! He's also real sexy lol
The man knows how to teach. U enjoy listening to him. He's v.clear. Yeah I dont like the unannounced quizes in his class; otherwise he's one of the best Professors at BC!

hes so cute and funny and makes things extra clear
this is the worst core that BKlYn college requires, luckily if you take Pletcher it's not bad. He has personality and explains in a very understandable way. He is the best professor for this core.
He is young, intelligent, and SO HOT!!! What else can you ask for in a man?!?
he's so cute and smart with personality. a great professor. hard test, pop quizes, and a class presentation.
This Professor is not only good at teaching the material in a structered and understandable manner, but he is hot, funny, and nice. He's really laid back, and easy to understand. His tests are fair. If you do the work this class is easy.
AFFABLE JIM OF THE SWIFT WORDS... This guy speaks from his mind thus enabling everything to be fresh. He knows how to work w/ the students, a fair grader, but more importantly he makes the class FUN and worth attending. I only wish he taught other course
Dont be fooled by the looks. There is not much substance underneath

he makes the best of this borring core class, nice guy, and fair grader!
fun and interesting teacher, very helpful if you do his work and not fall behind, you'll do well. to other raters, what's up with the flattering you'll make him blush. lol. still he is cute ;)
He is the BEST professor for this core. If you do the readings, everything falls into place. The quizes are easy, and so is the presentation and paper he assigns. A cutiee as well!
excellent professor!

he is amazing. he actually made mythology intersting as hell, i am still reading mythology after his class, because he is so inspiring. Definitely take him. By the way he is cute too.
most awesome teacher for core 1 especially in the summer.. he actually helps you understand it in a broader state of mind .. best bet take in summer not big modules more work but better understanding .. and oh yes he is cute and young and blond mmm
Definately he is,if not the best but one of the best professors I ever took. The best thing about him is that he is nice, very nice. And I guess many girls in his classes fantasize him a lot LOL.
Dr. Pletcher is a very smart man who is a wonderful teacher. He does give a lot of work, however if you are committed you can definitely do well in his class.
easy core 1 class but gives surprise quizzes. he's really interesting because he's into his subject. he gives really clear notes. if you want to do good in his class, you have to take notes and read the reading. he is really lenient.
i would definately reccomend this professor. he takes a boring subject and books that you can barely understand and makes it all make sense. if you have the chance to take him dont pass it up or you will regret it
he is the best thing that happened to brooklyn college:)
he is great professor, easy exams, though for some reason the class averaged a C... you DO have to study and read each day. but if you're motivated, he's great. cute? nah. bad teeth
Best teacher in the world! he made the class enjoyable and made greek classics fun.
Awesome teacher. Knows his stuff and teaches it well. Makes the class fun and I totally advise you to take him. Easy tests if you study. keep up on reading. Try and do the readings but you can get by on sparknotes once in a while, but so much more worth it to read the material.
excellent prof. def keeps the class interesting, and explains the material well, take him, its worth it!
If you don't take classes with pletcher you are crazy. He's awesome and of course the first day of class i saw how hot he is. He is cool.
This one cool cat, his knows his stuff. I have a new respect for the subject and i fined myself teaching others. i wasn't interested in it when i started but slow i got eased into it take him if u actually want to learn cause he can teach.
Hmm. He's "easy", and yet your class averaged a C? I'll let that one go and merely say that his was the one class (ever) I could not bluff my way through without detection. Teeth? What the hell has that to do with anything? Did I mention that he's an excellent teacher?
why not ask him how many A's he gave this semester? that'll tell you whether u should take a teacher just for his looks (unless of course u don't care about your GPA)
He is pretty much easy. You have to pay attention though. But want eyecandy he is the guy to take.
Not an easy class but probably the most enjoyable core 1 class that is offered. You need to know the material very well and he is VERY particular with what he wants. O ya, and he never lets you out on time; always goes over time. Despite all that, the class is pretty interesting.
He not only a knowelgable professor but really hot too. He make Greek literature interesting and fun to read. I would definitly recommend him. He is caring and a really nice teacher. Take him if you have the chance.
THis class was awesome. Pletcher is a hottie. I got a B+, but that's only because I skipped out on most of the in class quizzes. Pletcher is very fair and its always nice to have a Prof. Passionate about what they do. It helps that he's nice to look at!!
well i definetly think he's hot, i can't beieve he's a doctor...he looks so young...well anyways, you'll really like his class, the material is tough but once he explains it and you re read it it all makes sense in the end
his class requires you to do the readings but i found it worth it. he makes the material interesting and you learn a lot from his class. midterm is easy as is the final. you have to do the readings for the quizzes and know specific names. to get in the 90's on the paper you have to be original.
best class, ever! and he's so hot
honestly he is a great teacher he grades fairly and wants specify details , he seems very passionate about the topics dicussed , sometimes too much .(giggles)u cannot buff thru his class and get an A that would never happen .a total eye candy girls ,makes it so easy to get up for his 9.25 am class.
not only does he know his stuff really well, but he explains it in such a way where you do too. he puts notes on the board daily which really help to clarify everything. there is a lot of reading but you'll get that with any core 1 class you take. made core 1 extremely enjoyable-
He is cute he kinda reminds me of shaggy from Scooby Doo lol but he is a great teacher and he knows his stuff... the greek and latin can be overwhelming at times; there are a ton of words but just do the exercises and pay attention to him and you will get an A
Still the best, still the hardest, and still the hottest professor I had - and I am graduating... Class is a lot of work and full of tough reading, but he makes it easy - even for an ESL student. Prepare to every class, listen hard, take notes, stare at his eyes (ach!) and you have an A!
He knows his stuff and makes the class fun. Everything is clear and if u take good notes you'll do well in his class. His test and quizzes are detailed but its nothing he has not covered in class he's is def an amazing prof. if u have the chance to take his class do so. You will learn a lot and he is HOT!
If you don't like classics you will love it once he's in front of the room teaching. He's sooooooooooooo sexy.(Ladies)He makes you actually want to do the reading just so you can converse and have his eyes solely on you.
He is great!! Quizzes are detailed and you an get away with not doing the readings sometimes and just Spark noting it. Tests are fair. He is great, as long as you go to class and take good notes it shouldn't be too hard and also he is really interesting, funny, and lively. Take him if u can.
He is very interesting, explains every thing well and is very fair. I never thought that core one could be that much fun. On top of being a greattttttttt professor he is sooooooooooo sexy that u wouldn't wana talk ur eyes off him.....

For the guys out there not concerned about this eye-candy crap - he is a good, fair guy and is interestng in class. There is a lot of reading and it won't be an easy A, but no other core 1 class will be any easier, so its not a bad choice.
He is Awesome and so is his class. i never thought core 1 can be soo interesting. you have to work to get a good grade in the class. he is very fair and good grader and most importantly you learn a lot from his class. and like every said earlier he is cute as well.
Yes, excellent teacher, and thoroughly charming (although somewhat self-smitten?). Gave me an A also, baby, but you'd better to know your s... As for the "eye-candy" observations: more a testament to the dearth of anything easy-on-the-eye at this institution than any reality-based opinion. Hey ladies! How about raising our standards just a notch!
Worse professor ever, tests are hard, especially identifying parts
Good prof. He's really passionate about the subject he teaches, and if you let it, that passion will rub off on you. Not that you'll want to go out and read the Odyssey for fun, but he really makes it "come alive." Quizzes are ok if you really answer everything in the study guide and review before class.
Just read the material, memorize the characters (1/3 of the questions are names) and smile a lot at him. He is in love with himself: give compliments and wait till you have an idea about the answer he has in mind before you participate. Don't bring in your ideas, you will be shot dead before you can blink. Got my A just like that. :-)
I do not agree at all. I worked my butt off for this guy, read the books, the study guide, participated in EVERY class and he still gave me a B. That is not right.
He is awesome, explains every thing well and you just have to do ur part read, pay attention in class and most importantly take good notes. before the exam just read the notes over and u should be fine. Atleast thats wt i did and got my self an A!!!
Know names, places, & lists for the quizzes, he just wants to know you read the material (Spark Notes are good, even if you read the material). Study *every* latin word & name he gives you for the tests. Claims that your class participation grade comes from a speech & not your actual participation... but who knows. Loves if you can quote the books.
The best professor had!I didn't do very well on quizes and paper, but got an A for this class! Makes the class interesting, but you have to study the latin terminology and names a lot!Not an easy, but doable class!
he is the best prof...he knows his work and he explains things very well...at the beginning i thought i wasnt going to be interested in this class at all but towards the end it wasnt that bad...and hes cute
he's really not difficult, as long as you read the work.. and you gotta know the latin terminology. his lectures are great, and he explains things very clearly. and he's a cutie pie! LOOKS LIKE SHAGGY FROM SCOOBY DOO, but in a really adorable way lol
He seems really nice at first but in reality the guy is a total prick. His classes are somewhat interesting but he goes overboard with his 7 surprise quizes.Only one paper but it was a ****. The **** accused me of plagiarism for quoting text from a play we read in class. It was cited however it was a different version than was used in class.
Excellent. Take This Course
It's too bad this course it required by the college! This professor is okay.........he gives seven pop question, 1 paper, a midterm and a final......which are extremely difficult!
This guy is great! He is so passionate about the material it makes you interested as well. I loved him. He isnt so easy but you can get an A if you try. Just read before class and take good notes and the class shouldnt be a problem.
Core 1 must be the most reading intensive core and Pletcher really wants you to know ALL the material fowards and backwards on the final, otherwise you have NO chance of getting an A. Reading a synopsis on the web/sparknotes will not get you an A. He is very tough overall and with the pop quizzes but he is a good teacher and very knowledgable.
makes the class very interesting but you must know everything he mentions. you need to put time and effort into the class, but if u do u'll get an A. he gives 1 paper, midterm, final, and 7 pop quizes, drops 2 quiz marks
NOTHING TO SAY..JUST TAKE HIS CLASS AN U'LL SEE
Take his class. He's an awesome teacher. For his surprise quizzes, just make sure you know the reading. You're in college, you can read 60 pages in two or three days. It was my favorite class by far, just know your stuff for the midterm and final. He's cool and down to Earth, comes across as cocky sometimes but it's because he knows his Homer.
He's a great teacher and very helpful because he understand what he's talking about, and he's really passionate about ancient greece, so he knows his stuff. Not a very easy class if you don't put any effort into it. To get a good grade, you need to study.
He knows his stuff and he can make classics very enjoyable. I wasn't expecting him to be humorous and a great prof. overall. You'll do well as long as all the readings are done and you put effort into the exams, surprise quizzes, and paper. It's basically the whole point of the class. It's a very fun and fast class so the effort is worth it.
This professor is the best. He makes Classic seem like a love story with your constant attention. He knows his stuff. Although his class is hard and reading intensive, he is smart and gorgeous and at least there is something good to look at all class long. Study hard and make sure you read the books, you will get an A and you will leave wishing he
A very smart professor. He knows his stuff. Lots of reading but the class is fun; besides he is really, really HOTTT!! Take him...
oh my goodness.where do i start? lol this man is soo hot! lol he puts up this front like he is all cute .. but he knows he is hot! everything about him is so cute, but when he pulls out that test, just make sure u r prepared, he doesnt play, he must be hiding his little devil horns under that hair of his. but overall you will luv this professor
Pletcher do you see this? (You know he does)16 pages of how hot you are... sickening... He IS smart, his class IS awesome, I've learned more from him than any other professor at BC. He SHOULD be teaching more classes, and yes, he is ridiculously hot... but I swear that's not what makes him a grade A, sorry, yellow smiley face teacher...
yes, he's incredibly cute and looks like shaggy :) he knows the material REALLY well, and expects you to read all the books carefully and know everything he talks about. take notes! underline the important quotes! his tests aren't easy, but if you read, take notes & study - you'll do fine.
Yes, he is incredible cute and hot. But that is not what makes him to stand out. He is intelligent and he really knows Greek culture. His class is really interesting, and he makes Greek culture and literatrylike popular novel, better than popular novel. I actually fall in love with greek culture. Yes, I will hight recommend him.
He is very good at teaching but he is also very strict. If you want an easy grade do not take him. If you want to actually understand and learn Greek/Roman Literature he is the best there is. Grading on tests and papers is fair to hard. If you fall asleep in his class you should not be in college. Indie rock girls will think he's cute i guess.
Pletcher, do you ever read these comments?. I took him for core classics. The man is intelligent. he knows his stuff and keeps you interested. He gets an A in my book, not because he is hot, but also because he is so damn smart. I wanted to squeeze him and run my fingers through his dirty blonde hair !
he was amazing. Though the class requires commitment, it is worth it. He is entertaining, and participation is key. He gives Pop quizes, which you'll figure out the pattern to. He helps in anyway he can. TAKE IT WITH PLETCHER. YOU ROCK =D
I AM TAKING HIM FOR CLASSICS 31. I AM IN LOVE WITH HIM. HE IS SMART, HE LOOKS GOOD AND HE IS JUST SO ENTERTAINING. CAN HARDLY CONCENTRATE IN CLASS; BUT TAKE HIM...NO DOUBT. HE IS GREAT!!
He is a good teacher. He makes the class interesting but you need to do the readings for his class. One of the best classes i had in brooklyn college.
Makes the class interesting- u cant fall asleep in his class, if you do you prob work 3 jobs, he's super hott in a 'intelligent' way- Do the readings, and you will be ok. Extremly intelligent zProfessor. Doesnt require much jus examz sum inclass quizzes, and one paper to write. try to stay focus his hottness is intriguing..lol
Pious Pletcher.. king of classical cultures
Pletcher, is quite difficult. He is interesting, but you have to be very dedicated to the readings and pay close attention and take very good notes. He is extremely intelligible when it comes to classical cultures. Oh, and the paper, he rips it apart....trust me..if u want an easy ride..do not take him...if u wanna learn... take him
Tragedy was more of the same from Core 1, except we watched movies and the class was smarter. 2 midterms and a final, which are easy if you read and take good notes (they don't require much independent thought). I thought my paper sucked and I got an A, so he's not too hard with that. He's also a really nice guy and a great lecturer, so take him.
Worst professor in Brooklyn College. Is too dedicated to his work. A very hard grader. Definitely not an easy A. He has no life and he isn't cute at all. Oh hail PIOUS PLETCHER, KING OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY!
1st of all u need 2 read da books he gives 7 suprise quizzes n u need 2 knoe terms n stuff 4 da midterm n final. hes extremly committed 2 his work but 4 a core no joke itz hard. if u want an a u gotta work ur a$$ off! u hav a midterm ,final, are all essay format....hes mad interesting n makes da class not boring i would take him again becuz of dat
"the notion of ________" pious pletcher lol .....ok hes a good professor but u have to be dedicated as well or u will get a low grade!!!
i think hes great! he loves what hes teaching so he makes you love what your learning...yes hes a little hard, but comon your in college--the quizzes ask for a lot of detail, but the midterm has options so its not terrible...plus hes cute after he starts teaching...i recommend him...
I loved Mythology before this class, but Pletcher makes you love it even more. It's not too hard to get an A, if you put some sort of effort into it. I wanted to take him for Reading Comedy but I can't fit it in and I'm upset. Great guy, great class, and cute as hell!
really interesting and nice guy. class is hard but if you pay attention and do the reading youll be fine
hi anyone who took him 4 a classics class not core how were the requirements thanksss
Professor Pletcher is EXTREMELY learned and intelligent. He truly provides students with a thorough understanding and appreciation of classic literature. Perhaps if more students drooled less over him and paid more attention to his lectures, they would see this. He gives 7 unannounced quizes, but they are fair and straightforward.
WOw wat a cutey. LOL No really you have to work hard in his class to recieve a good grade. Do not expect to come unprepared and pass the class. He is fair and he likes you even better if you participate and remeber the terms used in class for the midterm and final. I never fell asleep in his class thats how gud he is. Does help that he was cute to.
for the person asking about a non core class, he gives the same amount of work, 7 quizzes, you watch movies and have to write papers, on top of a 7-10 research paper and each reading is around 100 pages of reading and sometimes much less like 30 pages. it is fun i have to admit, but only take his class when you have nothing major in your schedule!
Pletcher is very fair. You are expected to read a lot for the class, but I enjoyed them, especially Aristophanes (seriously that was funny!). If you're just taking it because it's required, change your attitude towards it! 7 quizzes, but if you do the readings they're no problem. Hot? Oh yeah! Funny? No doubt! Wish he taught everything.
I really hate professor Pletcher. I am a straight a students and my first B came from this man's class. He has no standard for judging and gives you a grade upon his liking for you. He does not promote independent thinking. he wants you to regurgitate everything he gives you like a damn sponge. To make matters worst, he does not respond to emails
I dreaded going to this class! He gave a new meaning to greek tragedy! If you take him, make sure to remember each and every minute detail of the 50 books you will be reading, as this is necessary to participate in the discussion and remember the greek/isle names used in the books for surprise quizzes... Just take another section if possible.
HELLOO, DON'T be misleaded by the rating, i really don't understand how people are saying many good things about this prof. I took CC1 with him, and at least i derserve A-, but instead he give to me C-,ohh man. if possible take other professor, and again DON'T BE misleaded by the rating, because most of the stuff people are saying insn't correct.
I enjoyed this class so much! There wasn't one day where I didn't smile constantly or laugh. He's very passionate about his subject which makes students motivated to do well. Tough grader, especially on the paper. Must read!! Tests are easier than they seem. Quizzes just suck- deal with it.
Funny and very smart prof. Loves drinking his black coffee! Explains everything and you will learn alot from the texts. Not boring at all! Answers all questions, and people have asked him some crazy ones..
Nice Guy! Is enthusiastic about Greek Mythology. Good teacher, you will learn alot. About 11 books for class. Gives surprise quizzes but never returns them, so there is no arguing for your grade. VERY ANAL when it comes to grading your papers & tests, and not flexible on reading interpretations. Avg. B+ got C b/c of misunderstanding. CAUTION.
pletcher is one finne man!!!Not only is he pleasing to the eye but he knows his stuff well. he is very knowledge about the subject and helps everyone understand clearly. his tests are exactly what he talks about in lectures and the paper is not hard if you know what your doing. TAKE HIM!!!WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!!!
horrible grader
Okay first of all every point counts!Every quiz question those presentations all do..showing up and im pretty sure participation counts even though its not on the syllabus..RAISE YOUR HAND AND PARTICIPATE..HE WANTS TO SEE YOUR EFFORT IN THE CLASSS!Classics is much more work than the core plus the kids are way smarter..
I think Pletcher plays favorites especially with the girls.. THere are girls that think hes the**** and he thinks so 2..hes mad arrogant but he knows hes stuff so basically ur opinion doesnt matter becuz hell reject it right oafter u say it..he also spites u as well!!!! BY THE WAY HE IS MADD UGGGLY he looks actaully like shaggy wit busted teeth!
wow i signed up for his class cuz of all the hot talk about him: he is so weird looking it's not even funny. he tries to act coy but his head is pretty blown up with gas. regarding the workload: way too much for a summer class, i use that period for spacing out...
goodness, you would think that this a high school class with all these ratings: people this is COLLEGE. if you can't deal with the work--that is your problem not the professor. Lookswise, he is not that bad, compared 2 the old farts that still teach in the shcool! he is very passionate about his course. overall he makes you look forward 2 each clas
Pletcher teaches extremely well and is passionate about what he teaches. This is a hard class and he is definitely a tough grader, but he is kind when he gives the final grade. I don't think he is biased in his grading towards those who participate. On a different note, he has horrible taste in music. I mean who doesn't like The Lion King!
I was attending Professor.Pletcher classics course and things seem to be subpar, but then when the first week passed he just came out of nowhere with the workload. The Quiz's are so hard, they feel like test. If you are taking this class make sure you read all the books and pray that he will pass you. I had to drop his class and I'm a hard worker.
he is so in tune with his work. he has a real "techne" and knows how to explain his subject. don't get fooled though--he expects a great deal of effort from his students. i find his passion so endearing, and his beautiful eyes dreamy...i wish he were ten years younger
extremely passionate about the topics he speaks about. He has a very broad education and loves to discuss various topics. He is interesting, interactive, and caring. Work load isn't terrible, know names, locations, and basic plot for quizes, be original with the paper. No secrets to midterm or final-covers exactly what was discussed in class.
Whoever says its hard to pass his class wasn't doing the work. All you have to de is listen, take good notes, and READ the texts. the pop quizzes are so easy once you've read. the exams are essays and you have to know details from your notes to do well.
Obviously Pletcher is girl bias, read postings. I posted earlier a "Nice Guy!", on 5/16/08 & mentioned a misunderstanding, rated him high b/c of his teachings, MISTAKE! In settling the dispute he agreed to his misunderstanding, although Chairman approved settlement he refused grade change w/o proceedings, he has NO ETHOS I had to Pass/Fail for GPA
WOW this class require u2 do all the reading &be there everyday.would not suggest@ take him if u have already registered4 other "harder" or "heavy" classes that requires alot of attention. He makes u work 4your grade which is fine with me. Just wish I knew what i was getting into when I made my schedule. HE IS NOT FEMALE BIASED! and BE PREPARED!
The only good thing I can say about this man is that he is kinda good looking. He makes material that is already difficult for most students ten times more challenging. Way too much work for a core class. Not very interesting. Huge waste of time. Spare yourself.
A complete D ouch e bag! The class was not hard at all and his grading was fair. However, if you ever have a problem with the text or a question, he will demean you. BTW, he does not deserve a chili pepper. Students at BC need to get some glasses ASAP!
i'll spare you all the feelings from my crotch...this class is awesome, especially if you're into the comic/tragic tradition which is pious pleasure--ahem, pletcher's specialty. DO THE READING AND SHOW UP FOR CLASS! if you don't do those two things (in all your classes?), you're an idiot. do them & participate & you'll do fine. he's not that tough.
i had him for the lecture portion of the core. hes a great teacher, funny, and knowledgeable. his midterm and final were a bit tricky. if you write down everything he says and read sparknotes/gradesavor, you wont really need to read the books.
I wish I took him for other classes, he is an amazing teacher. He knows his stuff, and I suppose he tries to act coy, but his ego blows up his spot. A few short papers, one final research paper, and two crazy long exams.. and yes, he is hot! Oh, and I hear he knows how to party. I wouldn't mind having a few brewskies with him at the bar.
It's rare to find a Professor whose intelligence matches his passion in teaching. He takes a seemingly challenging subject and makes it easy to learn, understand, and want to know more about. Attendance is mandatory as he goes over a lot of material each lecture. If the material doesn't make you come to class, his hotness will surely get you.
He's a good teacher and is extremely compassionate about the material. There are 7 quizzes and he drops the lowest 2. The quizzes require you to know the text very well including character names. The midterm and final are essay format with 5 short essays for the midterm. If you pay attention, take notes and do the reading then you can do well.
Take Dr. Sowers!!! This guy knows his stuff, but he tends to dig too deeply into the subject. He's gotta understand that we're not all classical culture majors, and we are all forced into taking it because it's a requirement. I wish he was a little straigt forward teaching the material, rather than giving us his opinions!Sowers is better professor!
clear and knows his stuff but HARD!
My first class in college was his class. He started by saying we shouldn't expect to do well, because the class average is a 64. How is that a way to start a class?!?! He doesn't understand that we're REQUIRED to take the class. We don't actually want to-he delves too deeply into it. His tests are murder. Avoid!!!
Avoid! Very thorough and passionate about the material, but expects you to be as well, on a level that is ridiculous for a core class. Make sure you take most thorough notes and attend every lecture if you want to pass. Tests contain questions like "what happened in Book 3 of Aeneid after character X gazed upon the sky and scratched his head".
I got an A in his class. He really knows the subject well and your entire grade is basically the midterm, final, and two 1000 word essays. The tests ARE hard, but it's college and if you attend every class, read the books, and study for tests you'll be fine. Basically write down everything he says because it'll all be on the exams. I leared a lot.
Great teacher, knows his stuff, tries to make stuff as easy as possible. Funny, easy to talk to. Yes, tests are hard, but he does grade on a curve. If I can get an A with him, so can you.
He is great! He knows his stuff and strikes an interest in his students. He helps students understand and analyze what happens in the books. Some of the texts are boring but just attend lectures, take good notes, and you can do good in the class!
I absolutely love this professor. I took his class during the summer, and there was the first time ever I was getting up in the morning and I wanted to go to school. He is funny, really knows his stuff, not to mention went to one of the top schools in the world.Yes,he's tests are hard, but believe me-not the hardest
Pletcher is what every professor should be. He's so passionate about his topic that it just fuels the class. I've never seen anyone dose off in one of his courses- even when it was a morning class. Honestly, if you read- you'll do just fine, but that's common sense, now isn't it? Plus, he makes discussions fun so you actually WANT to participate.
Pletcher is an incredible teacher, it is just important to know that his tests are hard /even for people who routinely get great grades/. Very, very thorough studying is required, and you will have to fight tooth and nail to get a high B or an A. He is a wealth of knowledge about the classics, though, engaging and funny. Texts are crucial.
A very enjoyable professor. His lessons were clear and taking precise note is the only way to pass with an "A". I found him available, most often while he was smoking out in front of the building before class. He's passionate and engaging and makes the subject accessible. Be forewarned that there is a LOT of reading. A++
As far as teaching goes hes very interesting and very clear and enjoyable there is tons of reading to do for every class however when it comes to grading he is extremely tough and his tests are very difficult even if you are a straight A student so if you care about your grade stay clear
This class was horrible, It was labeled Self And Society but had nothing but horror and brain washing material, this professor concentrates on crippling minds. There were around 10 books and 20 dif. materials (like from hell, sorcery, sex and assassination, & marriage of heaven and hell). The professor is very biased. Stay away from this course.
Excellent instructor. Eloquent, creative, and knowledgable. This is a class you absolutely must not cut corners in. Students who complain are simply not doing the work or they have sloppy study styles. Take good notes, pay attention and read for an A. He's a fair grader and has reasonable expectations for his students.
Possibly the best teacher I have had in Brooklyn College and I am a senior. He knows so much , is so into the subject and knows how to make it interesting. Quizzes are BAD, but the exams are easier. Lots of reading. Not an easy class, but a very VERY enjoyable one. And, Gosh, he is hot as hell... Seriously. Unless you are into Justin Bieber type
A great lecturer! He knows the information cold and always engages students in discussion. However, you MUST read and take excellent/detailed notes. Test questions are specific and can be tricky at times.
No one can explain these difficult books as good as him. Highly recommended. Take good notes, you'll need them.
Very knowledgable on the subject matter. Funny and has interesting lectures about the readings. Attend class because he gives a lot of information during his lectures. Pretty fair exams and essay assignments. If you do your work, you'll be fine.
Do not take him. You must keep up with all the readings at al times or else you'll fail miserably
A great professor!Educated, intelligent, well-spoken, extremely charismatic. Lectures on the books were fantastic (no lectures on films, just watched them). He has an interesting taste in books and films :))You have to attend and read the books(What? In BC?). I am yet to meet someone who made an attempt to study and didn't like him. Highly recommend
Great professor, extremely interesting lectures. A lot of reading and tests are hard, but if you do all readings and actually put some effort, you should be fine!
I'm currently taking this class fall 2014 and honestly regret it. This class has nothing to do with self & society. The professor said the class shows how society deviate from the norm; I beg to differ. Honestly, this class is demonic (it's the devil's playground) from every reading and movie! I cannot wait until Dec 16th to finally be done!
Pletcher is the classic example of having to love the subject to appreciate him. He knows it & is interesting, but u must memorize EVERYTHING (storyline + ANYTHING mentioned in class). The 50Q multiple choice 2 tests are designed to be tricky - he says so himself. Average w 10 point curve was 65. Average paper B-. Unless u love classics, avoid.
two papers, midterm and a final. His midterm was a bit difficult but he gave a 10 point curve. Not to hard of a grader on papers. In class he explains the readings really well. If you miss a class, or part of a class, you will be lost.
Too hard for core class,,
Fantastic. Lectures are interesting and very engaging. He's very funny and is relatable to students. He actual cares about what you have to say. There is a lot of reading, but don't feel like you have to read every single thing. I sparknoted a lot and still did really well. Papers and tests are very fair, not so hard.
Such a great professor! Funny and engaging, Lectures are super interesting, don't really need to read all assignments but reading (even sparknotes) really helps. Doesn't take attendance, but it's REALLY easy if you come to lectures and write notes. Midterm, Final, 2 Papers- MAJOR curve on all things, including transcript grade. Best lecturer!!!
Awesome lectures!! Knows the material SO well, his analysis is great and really interesting. Show up to lectures and write notes, he gives a huge curve on everything. Not a lot of work besides reading- you can still do well without reading if you take notes. Midterm,Final, 2 papers (straightforward, often topics are discussed in classed too)-BEST!
He definitely knows his stuff but he is a little arrogant. He's not very clear unless you ask for clarification and sometimes he's made some students feel dumb. He gives a lot of reading and expects a lot but you can definitely get by off of spark notes.
so I've had Pletcher twice now and I think he's awesome. But I also think he should realize that most students are taking more than twelve credits and work simultaneously, point being he assigns A LOT of reading. Definitely pay attention to the vocab he uses because he'll test you on it later. Also he has great taste in movies and music
Took him last spring. He is the best if you are not there to just waste time. Yes he makes you read quiet a bit, but the material is interesting. Lecture wise he is the BEST. Take notes, pay attention, read the assignments and you are guaranteed a good grade in this class. He also has a good sense of humor. You will enjoy. Taking him again NOW. :)
Have him right now; come to class, take good notes, Guarantee you'll get at least a B if you pay attention to his lectures. Everything he says is useful and he's pretty funny. His tests are fair, and tests mainly on the readings and his lecture. I'm not even interested in classics but he makes it engaging and interesting. Take him for classics.
if your not really interested in the subject he is the perfect professor because he explains things clearly and uses todays issues to expound on it helps that he is really funny
Took Con,Cop,Mark class as reqrment in Fall 2015. Hard with all the reading but AMAZING class and teacher. This class is an eye opener. Didn't do ALL the readings but I would recommend to do so. *Write down everything he says/writes on board*. DO NOT skip a class, trust me. Get a peers # from day one just in case. Take the class!
I will give him credit for being an entertaining lecturer. But he doesn't encourage students to think independently about the text. He is not accessible outside of class.
Ridiculous is all i have to say. A whole bunch of bologna and I don't get how people are so into these books. They must have a lot of time on their hands. Or they aren't science majors. I def don't have the time for these bs stories that I'm never going to think back to in the future. Other than that, good professor. Just not into the class itself
He is a good professor, tests are fairly easy. A LOT OF READING but you'll be fine with the spark/cliff notes (as long as you also go to class. Going to class is recommended but not mandetory. Take him!
Attending lectures and taking good notes is key to passing and excelling in this class. He's very passionate about the books we've read so class is always interesting.
There's tons of books to read but enjoy reading them. Lectures are interesting. Exams are based on notes so must come to class and take notes. 2 paper and give enough time to submit. It's a great class!
If you EVER get the chance to take Pletcher please do. Envelops you in his lectures. Funny at times. Some would think taking a class that focuses on Greek Lit to be boring but Pletcher makes the class very interesting. He answers all questions, goes in depth about readings and is overall awesome. Read/Take notes and you'll get an A. 10/10 prof.
he's hilarious, very sweet and lectures are actually super entertaining. there are three test and one essay, so its either really easy or really hard to do the work. he gives a lot of info u cant find by simply reading books but are on tests-- and reading is actually super important! seriously loved the class, didn't attend every time but did well
Great professor. Lectures are optional as he doesn't take attendance but they're informative and entertaining. There's alot of reading but that's the nature of the classical literature. Exams are easy if you've done the readings and attended the lectures.
Very interesting and insightful lectures. Delivers the material in an engaging way that's also easy to understand. Attendance isn't mandatory, but his notes are essential to doing well. Two papers, a midterm, and the final are your grade, and they're all fair in difficulty. Only downside is there's a lot of reading. But overall, highly recommended.
Pletcher is a great lecturer. He does go a bit fast, you need to take a lot of notes (I took honors), and there's a lot of reading, but the material is interesting and Pletcher is extremely well versed in classics (and entertaining). He can be condescending when he disagrees but can also be very nice. I'd say take him, I enjoyed the class.
He is funny and chill. No textbooks per se but you have to read some books like Illiad, etc. I got them from the library. Take good notes and best to attend lectures, some questions on tests are terms he mentions in class that are not in reading. Two midterms and one final. Only main con is that he releases grades so late.
He's alright, wouldn't fully recommend him to stem majors b/c there are way too much readings. His classics class is basically 3 essays worth 60%,10% attendance, and 30% final(which requires u to read 8 books and write an essay, so you have to memorize a bunch of quotes). If you like literature take him. Otherwise I would take someone else.
great class. lots of reading, some papers, a final. more of a lit class than classics, so pletcher assigned a lot of pretty random texts that turned out to be gems
This was a really interesting class; I read books I've never read before and discovered new authors. We turned in 3 essays, but the topics aren't prescribed - the student chooses. This made it somewhat more difficult but definitely produced better papers. The final was one complicated essay question, so paying attention in class is important.
He is the best.
