Awesome class! Dont hesitate 2 take. I dreaded ever taking this course but in the end it wasnt bad at all. Took 4 summer 05 (Grade:A), it consisted of 3 six-minute speeches (persuasive,inform,special occasion) u chose what u want to talk about on those 3 categories & can use outline. Also a 1min memorized speech. midterm + final are not bad at all!

VERY VERY EASY CLASS, HE MAKES YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE TO GIVE A SPEECH, YOU CAN CHOOSE ANY TOPIC YOUR COMFORTABLE TALKING ABOUT, AND HE WILL GIVE YOU A FAIR GRADE, I DREADED TAKING SPEECH OVERALL, BUT WITH THIS PROFESOR I HAD NO REGRETS.

Mr. Poyner is an awesome teacher, he knows what is he doing and plus he knows what he wants from the students, I could never picture myself in front of a group of people but I did and I got a very good grade too. :)

I took his class in the summer of 06 and it was one of the best classes i have ever had. He is always willing to stay after class and help any student, and his class is easy. Just come to class, prepare for your speeches and youll be fine. 3 big speeches, 1 memorized, 3 quizes, midterm and a final. Even though it seems like a lot, it really wasnt.

I am encouraging future speech 101 students to please enroll under the class of Prof. James Poyner because he helps students to move on to their goals and encourges students to keep on doing good job. Students please just do your part as a student and you will be rewarded.

finally a teacher who understands that students to not take speech because they want to. he understands that this is a Cal State required class and he accomodates. i had 3 6-8 minute speeches and a 1 minute learned speech. once u finish the first speech, rest is easy. easy A class. you will need to show up though.

THIS TEACHER WAS AWSOME.. REALLY EASY! HE IS SO NICE AND FUNNY. I TOOK HIM OVER THE SUMMER AND HE GIVES A LOT OF BREAKS (IT CAN GET A LITTLE BORING) AND HE LETS YOU LEAVE EARLY MOST OF THE TIME. GO TO CLASS EVERY DAY READ THE CHAPTERS BEFORE THE TESTS AND YOUR SET.

Very easy. His usual grade for speeches is 95% as long as he can understand your train of thought and dialect. If your accent and grammer is too poor you may have trouble. Alot of textbook use but it's common sense stuff so one quick brief reading and your good. Tests are easy. Sometimes he spaces out.

Great person and the class is very easy. Just do the three speeches, pass the quizes and you'll at least get a B.

What a great teacher for Speech! He made class fun and comfortable. He is one of the best and easiest teachers I have ever had.

I love Mr. Poyner's Saturday class.. His written exams are easy so long as you read the book.. The speeches are NOT hard.. We delivered 4 prepared speeches, 1 learned/memorized speech and 1 or 2 impromptu speech. You won't to get an A on his class but you still have to do some work.. take his sat class so you'd have more time to write your speech

Of course the class was a little nerve wrecking (IT'S SPEECH), the speeces range from introducing youself, to a persuasive/informative speech, and also a one minute short memorized. Read YOUR chapters and study the summaries in the back of the chpts. and you'll get an A- even students who did'nt speak english as their 1st language seemed okay here.

Mr. Poyner is a wonderful professor. He is not trying to make Speech class a painful experience. You better be prepared for each class though otherwise the points are deducted. Read the book, but do not concentrate too much on the theory - it is a speech class, so speeches are more important.Professor gives clear explanation for any points deducted

i loved mr. poyner. i had his class 4 days a week and was not once bored. his speeches are do-able and easy. he helps you and you know whats expected of you. the midterm is EASY and so is the FINAL. it was my first college class and it was a breeze and it was fun. highly recommend him!

i took him for spring semester once a week. i dont want to sound desperate but this teacher is weired. i did 3 perfect speeches but he would always give me a B. my friend who was getting C's on speeches and quizes got a B in the end too. He is coll I guess but it depends if he will like u or not.

A fair grader and unbiased. Speech would always be nerve cracking but he is willing to help to keep your cool. Do your outlines on time and read the book, you'll do good.

He's so awesome. He makes you feel really comfortable in class and he's very easy going. He was the first college professor I had and he made me like going to class. Overall, it's an easy class but its helpful too and he's just a really nice person. don't take this class with anyone else !!

Great teacher and fun class. As long as you read the chapters and put some time in preparing your speeches, you should have no problem in getting an A. Whatever you do, don't let him catch you using your cell phone during class. I would absolutly recommend this teacher!

Do all outlines, do not read the outline while giving the speech. The exams are all vocab/key terms from the book. Overall a good professor!

for the one who commented 6/26: Mr. Poyner is very fair. He does not prefer one over the other. he does not only grade the way you make and/or deliver your speeches. your behavior in the class counts, too. He is a very knowledgeable prof & i would highly recommend taking his class.

My advice to you:During the first week if you feel that he does not like you, then immediately drop the course :))He really did not like me so I got a B even though everything that I did during the semester was close to perfect!!

Great professor. Makes you feel comfortable the entire time. Quizzes, midterm and final but fairly easy. I didn't even study for any of these tests but I got A's and B's. Fair grader even though you don't do well on speeches. Keeps class interesting and funny. Recommended to all!

If you are nervous about speech then take mr. Poyner you will not be sorry. Most teachers in GCC should take a course from Poyner on teaching.

very funny and amazing teacher, his humor makes the class fun, he is an easy grader when it comes to the speeches, even if you read the speeches off, youre gonna get a B or higher, so he isnt strict with that. however, his quizes were very annoying and most students would get Cs or Ds on them,which is a bummer since most speech teachers dnt quiz

I am an extremely nervous person when it comes to speech, but Poyner seems to understand this problem with all students. He tries to make people comfortable with public speaking and he doesn't hold it against you if you're nervous, reading off a paper, or even if english is you're second language. I definitely recommend this professor to anyone.

I absolutely was a afraid of speech but since it was a requirement to transfer I had to take it this semester. But Prof Poyner really help and made speaking in front of a group easy. I recommend his class to anyone afraid of speech or anyone English is not their first language.

Poyner is such a great teacher. He is funny and he likes to get to know his students. He gives easy quizzes and he is an easy grader. It is impossible to fail his class, if you do the work and show up in class. I enjoyed his class so much, he makes it interesting! Never a boring class with him as the professor!

Professor Poyner is one of my favorites. He's really passionate about the class and his students, I loved coming to this class everyday. He does give exams so you have to read the book, but for your midterm and final just go over your past exams, he uses the same questions so you're good. Easy grader too, highly recommend if you don't like speech.

I took speech 101 on a saturday morning, and he definitely made the class fun. Attendance plays a huge part in your grade, and speeches were not hard to do and he is not a tough grader. Gives great feedback. Literally, this is a class that you cannot fail. Very easy class to Ace.

Forget about the other speech instructors. He is the best. I learned so much and gained a lot of skills from his class. If you are shy he will change that. He makes you feel very comfortable and is there to help you. He is very lenient. I will miss his class eventhough I had to wake up early on a saturday. Awesome class.

There are honestly so many good things to say about this teacher. I have learned so much in such a short amount of time. I am a very anxious person, especially when it comes to public speaking, but I feel I have gained confidence and insight in how to be a better speaker. He really tells you what you need to work on and what you already excel in.

Took him during Winter 17 (night class) & he was a really cool, funny guy. Had a few quizzes, 1 midterm & a final. 1 short speech, 2 long (6-10 min) & 2 memorized/ learned. I'd recommend at least renting the book b/c the quiz questions are directly related to your reading. Had to do some research for the long speeches, but fun class to take.

Easiest professor you can get. As long as you show up and say something as a speech, you'll get a decent grade (that is even if you do not have anything prepared). You do not have to try hard for this class at all. Very chill

In 5 weeks Poyner had us do 4 major speeches, and a lot of activities, sometimes in groups. We also had 3 quizzes, a midterm, and a final based on the book. There were never any lectures. Be prepared to speak everyday. This practice will help you overcome the fear of public speaking. Read the book, and practice your speeches. That's all it takes.

Great guy! He gives a very clear schedule for each class meeting in the beginning of the semester. He grades speeches very easily and asks for outlines for our bigger speeches. He really wants you to become a great speaker. The only time we used our "textbook" was for mostly common-sense quizzes, a midterm, and final. You'd have to TRY to not pass.

Wonderful, nice and kind teacher, that created a warm atmosphere in class with humor and jokes, not harsh on grading. I wish people appreciated it, though, and didnt take advantage of kind people like him. One guy in our class was cussing all the time, and some gals were chatting out loud non-stop. People, be more respectful to good professors.

Mr. Ps class was a lot of fun. I suggest taking it with a friend! Its so exciting presenting in front of the class especially if you have a familiar face there with you!

Mr. Poyner really makes public speaking super comfortable. Easiest class I have ever taken in my life and yes, there's a textbook used for the final and midterm but I never read a single word of that book and passed with a 98%. The tests were THAT easy, it's common sense. Speeches are so easy, tests are even easier, just show up and pass honestly.

You want an easy speech prof? Well, you hit the jackpot. Poyner is your guy. Easy Class, Easy "A". 5 speeches, two 1 min speeches, special occasion, informative, and persuasive. 1 midterm, and 1 final. Book is cheap to rent, might as well get it, but not really needed, based on logic.

Hes a pretty cool dude. I offered two mustard packets to him, and he took both without even hesitating. Would take his class again, except for the fact that Im graduating and cant. Im also in high school and am using this code to rate him cause hes just that good of a teacher.

I'm not in college yet, I have him for high school, love this man. I have no idea who is in the class, I needed to use a random code. If you don't like this man, you're probably doing some wrong and you should fix that.

I took professor Poyner as a high school student for dual enrollment. I only had positive things to say about this man. He is so kind and easy-going. The workload is highly manageable, and the textbook is online. Two written outlines, three quizzes, and the midterm and final.

Mr. Poyner is an amazing professor. Our class met on Mondays and Wednesdays and it only lasted for about 1-1 1/2 hours. He doesn't assign much, we only have 5 speeches in total, which two of them being a memorized speech. There are 3 quizzes on various chapters in the textbook, which is lengthy, but the questions aren't hard. Would recommend.

For me whose primary language is other than English, professor Poyner has been extremely easy to understand. He makes sure everything is clear and comprehensible. He tells you exactly what you should do to boost your self-confidence and improve your speeches. Making eye contact with the audience and speaking expressively is the key to getting an A.

Dr. Poyner was an amazing professor. I had him for the winter and it went by so quickly, and the work was easy to understand. On top of that, he doesn't criticize student's speeches and gives positive feedback as well. The quizzes were based on the chapters he gives for free, and the speeches follow an easy outline.
