Jim is a really nice guy and always willing to help with your labs. Labs are easy. Once your done with the assigned labs, you can leave. Hour and fifty minute class, stayed maybe 45 minutes to complete everything.
He's really nice, but he talks soooo fast during lectures. Thankfully, he puts all his powerpoints on blackboard. I didn't go to class very often and got a A- in the class. The labs were really easy and you were never there over an hour.
Pytko was one of the nicest teachers I have ever had. You can tell he's very passionate about his field of work. He will work with you if you are absent and will go out of his way to make sure you learn the material. Highly recommended.
Very nice guy. Pretty easy class. Labs are practically free points. Tests aren't that bad. Shouldn't have trouble getting A- or better
I am really bad at any type of science class and I got an A in his class. He is really nice and goes out of his way to make sure you do well. He gives opportunites for lots of points to help your grade and if you study his powerpoints you'll do good on the exams. I highly recommend him if you need to take this class.
Great professor. If you want to get a good grade, read over lecture notes and read chapters from text.
Boring class. Don't even go to one class, just read the powerpoints from blackboard and study those and you will get an A. All he does in class is read the power points to you. No surprise attendance or projects. Very nice guy.
Very nice guy. Labs can be tricky sometimes but he allows you to work with partners. Make sure you study a TON for tests. He goes over material very well and also gives many powerpoints; however, the exams have nothing to do with his studyguides. I am a 4.0 student and have a low "B" in the class.
Probably one of the nicest professors I have met. He is extremely helpful if you ask. Attendance is a must because of the labs, which majority of all are very easy. If you study the study guide he gives out before each exam, you should do fine. Map quizzes are a joke, very easy. Great professor and easy class, hard not to get an A or at least a B.
He is a very nice person and very helpful during labs if you desire his assistance. As a lecturer, he isn't very captivating, but the information he gives is exactly what is needed to succeed on the exams. There are many point opportunities so an A or B should be easy to attain.
Jim was a nice guy, but his class is structured in a very rote and monotonous manner. All lectures are verbatim from powerpoint, and he does not put the notes online, which I found strange because he already provides incentives for class attendance through the labs. It's a pretty standard 100-level class.
He is so nice some people thought of him as a 'pushover'. He will tell you the answers to all the labs if you just ask him and gives you study guides for all the tests which are directly from the test. If you show up once a week, you can get an A.
So easy. Just reads off power points that are on black board. Do not go to class, it's a waste of time...
Attendance is not mandatory, he just reads off the power point every class! I attended every lecture and still had trouble on the exams! BORING material unless your interested in geology! Map quizzes are an easy A but he assigns a portfolio assign that is way to much work for 100 points! it was ridiculous! i would not recommend this class!
Very nice guy but lectures are just read off of the powerpoint. You have to read a novel and do a project that's worth 100 points and it's way more work than only 100 points worth. Class is boring but some things are interesting. Only take if it's for your major.
This class is super easy. There is a portfolio due at the end of the semester which is way too much work for 100 points. Just reads off the powerpoints and doesn't post the slides online.
Great teacher, always willing to help out and will work with you if you need more time on an assignment. very flexable which helps because the material for Geo 203 is very wordy. Great guy just ask for help. strongly reccomend pytko vs other gis profs.
Tells you to buy the book, you never use it. You do labs every class. He will tell you the answers if you ask, but he grades hard. Exams are really rough. He asks questions about the smallest details that he expects you to memorize, not concepts or anything. I would most certainly take a different professor if possible.
Worst professor I have ever had. Nice guy, but some people just shouldn't be teachers. Makes power points that he races through. You can't follow anything. His tests are extremely hard. . Went to see him for extra help and he told me everything was in the book, so why am I here? Do not take him. Worst class I have ever had.
I would take pictures of the slides cause he flew through them. But other than that, nothing to complain about. VERY helpful when it comes to labs. Gives out study guides which help a lot. Gives out 50 point map quizzes which are very simple. Highly recommend him. Plus he's a cool guy
He is terrible. He doesn't explain anything and he talks very fast. He expects you to know every scientific thing possible to man. Worst professor ever.
He flies through all the power points and the exams are brutal, the review is extremely broad and is basically everything he has ever said. Would not recommend for someone who learns slow.
Jim is a nice guy and is always willing to help. The way the labs are written are sometimes unclear, but he will always steer anyone confused in the right direction. Wish he would step away from the powerpoints in lectures though. Exams were based off of these and not the textbook. Buying the textbook was pretty much pointless.
His notes are not everything on the powerpoint you have to focus on his voice and the powerpoint which he talks very fast. I would not recommend him.
He is very helpful if you get lost on the labs. He test are difficult but curves. The tests are purely based off the powerpoints and the book is useless. The subject is very dense but has a lot of applications.
take this class online! very easy! Labs are straight from lab notebook and you get more than one try. Exams are a bit tricky, just take your time and use your book. As long as you follow guidelines for discussion board posts you'll get an easy A.
The class is very hard and you take a lot of notes. You learn a lot and get plenty of chances to get credit. Very nice teacher and will help you whenever you need him. It is not a hard class to pass but you do need to show up.
James goes through his power points very quickly and its tough to jot down all of the notes. He's very helpful for in class assignments, but his exams are very detailed and tough.
He's really nice and helpful but his lectures are super boring and he goes so fast that you miss a bunch of notes. The test are hard but about half were in groups. The labs aren't too bad and he'll help you out so it's a lot of easy points. Buying the lab manual is a MUST but I never looked at the real book.
He goes through his power points very fast and is very unclear on upcoming events. The maps quizzes are very easy. DONT need the textbook. But the lab manual is essential. I have over 100% in the class by going to every class, taking notes and reading them over.
If you like geography you will love his class. Powerpoints can be long and dragged out. Have to go to class every day in order to get lab assignments and daily reading quiz. Tests are fine as long as you read over powerpoints online.
I found this subject extremely difficult, as geo is NOT my strong suit. He was an amazing professor and always work to accommodate students. Let us use note cards and take "group" exams. Always helps on labs and makes sure you get assignments done. Kept up on grades & always had a positive attitude in class.
At the beginning of every class, he has a short pop quiz based on the reading. He lectures for an hour, then lets you get into groups to perform a lab in your manual before you leave. It's pretty mandatory to go to class, but he is super helpful with your labs if you ask for it. Tests are pretty tough since it's difficult to study for.
He was a really good professor. Provides great power points, use them. Allows multiple tries on Labs and quizzes, just not exams. It was a busy class by he is a fair teacher and I would recommend him.
Homework was varied, some units were very easy, but some had me making corrections. Homework was able to be submitted 2-3 times for re-take, which helped my grade since I didn't always get them all correct. Tests were relatively easy. You have to follow the units, or else you'll fall behind and not understand the following principles.
I definitely didn't think geography would be a strong suit of mine but Mr. Pytko is very helpful!! He lectures half of the class time then the second half you have time to work on a lab with a partner. Any question you have he'll help and hint you to the right answer. Exams aren't too hard either if you study the power points. I recommend him!
Prof Pytko is a very nice and respectable guy. Although, I found the content of the class to be very overwhelming and hard.
He's a little weird, but his lectures and interesting and fun! I didn't do a lot of the readings but took notes in his class and studied those for exams and never got below a 90 on my exam. Easy A if you take notes and sometimes do some readings!
If you are looking for a UP or basic classes and aren't majoring in sciences I would recommend this class online. He sets it up really nicely so you aren't overwhelmed with homework all the time. You automatically get 100% on the homework if you do it, and there are lots of extra credit opportunities.
Professor Pytko is a great professor. He accepts late work and is very helpful with the labs. The only complaint I have is that he goes very fast during the lectures, but at least he posts the slides on black board. If you go to class, do the labs and study for the exams, you should do great. Exams are pretty hard so do not study the night before.
Not possible to fail online if you even halfway try. The required Connect access doesn't let you quit the homework without getting all possible points. Practice tests are unlimited attempts & a good way to boost your scores. He gave extra credit for discussion boards. He didn't "do" a lot for the online class, but it wasn't necessary.
Dr. Pytko is a nice guy, but lectures are very dry. Class is mandatory because there is an assignment given almost every day (he does allow late work if you miss a class though). Exams are sort of weird because he doesn't tell you the format, but they aren't difficult so if you study you should definitely pass.
Great professor, very caring and helpful. lectures are somewhat heavy but easy to understand. Do not buy the book, you wont be using it! At the end of every class there is a lab. Tests are not that bad but doesn't tell you the format unless you ask.
There was no homework for this class except for studying for tests. The class was quite easy if you show up and pay attention. One complaint is that he talks very fast and its hard to write everything down as he talks. He is quite a quirky guy but he definitely means well and is always willing to help if you dont understand something.
James is a tremendous prof. If you ask him for help he will always assist you. Powerpoints are a nice point of info and his lectures are not terrible boring. There is almost a lab everyday so you should go to class those points add up.
So nice, helpful, and always was excited to teach. The exams are kinda hard but it equals out because of the assignments you do in class (so go to class) and 50 point map quizzes. He also lets you to turn in homework late. I used the book once and all power points are online. He is THE BEST. If you take GEO 105, TAKE IT WITH HIM.
Professor Pytko is a great teacher. He lectures a lot but his class never ran the full time and he was very helpful with the class work. He gives straight forward quizzes and his exams are not bad.
There was NO way for me to fail. All of the discussion board posts were 5 points extra credit each week, and it was just a social thing! All of the assignments could not be completed until you got 100%. The exams all were unlimited attempts, so take them twice! They are long and each module takes a bit of time, but a real easy A to get credit!
Taking GEO 105 online with Professor Pytko may be one of the best decisions you can make in your college career. If you even ATTEMPT to try in this course you will finish with a 97 or above.... it counts for a LAB and a science credit which is GOLD! TAKE THIS CLASS..... you will NOT regret it
He is the best!! He is super understanding and truly wants students to pass. He knew this wasn't my major and I was poorly advised to take a class I dd not need & he did everything he could to make sure all the students in the class got A's & B's. As long as you go to class and attempt the work, he will work to help you!
I took GEO105 for a lab requirement and I'm really glad I did. Pytko is super chill and not a hard grader. As long as you go to class and study you will get an A.
Solid guy.
This guy is awesome! He gives you extra credit opportunities toward the end of the semester, and if you do the labs and ask questions, you will likely do just fine. You have to show up every day though as there is a lab every day but you usually get out of class early. Easy class though. The only thing is, he goes really fast through presentations.
I have never made contact with this professor, but I have never had an issue with this class. Do all of the work and you'll be fine, and do the extra credit! It's so easy!! He says he is always available by email which is nice, and he sends out things on blackboard so that's cool. Easy A class.
Very easy online class, especially if you are only taking it for the UP lab and science credit. Weekly homework assignments that you do until you get 100. Practice exams that have unlimited tries, highest grade counted The exams are basically the same thing as the practice exams. A few online lab assignments with assessments but not too hard.
You should study if you want to get a good grade. you can pass without it though. Very lecture heavy though, but small class size (about 25 people in mine)
Pay attention during lectures and ask questions on the labs if you don't understand and you'll get an A. He's super helpful with any questions and he's very accessible outside of class. Map quizzes can be easy 100s to pat your grade with if you study them for a little bit. Overall super nice guy and really helps you understand the material.
Do the weekly labs and you will be fine.
This was a terribly boring class. He is so monotone about geography, that it was hard for me to stay awake during his lectures. Also dont take this class if you arent interested in Weather, Rivers, Soils, etc. I made a mistake of being in this class and Im glad its over!
Whenever I would ask for help regarding the lab assignments, he was very vague and I definitely learned the bare minimum with the labs. His tests were also very hard, even if I did study hard. (Keep in mind I had perfect attendance the whole semester)
Professor Pytko was pretty bland during lecture. Luckily, class was pretty easy, but there was a lot of labs. When we switched to online, he did the best out of all of my professors and emphasized good mental health for his students by checking in on each of them. Overall, a nice guy, but lectures were really boring.
This class wasnt that hard at all! Do the extra credit & lab manuals and youll do just fine!
He is the nicest and most understanding professor Ive ever had. Super helpful teacher as well!
Hes a very cool guy, if you do your homework and pay attention, youll probably do really well in this class.
He was a super nice professor, very understanding, and cared about his students. However, this class is extremely easy so if you're someone who needs something a little challenging to stay interested in, I would take a different one. If not, this class is an absolute breeze.
Amazing professor. Took this for the lab credit and it was an absolute breeze, do the homework and read and you'll pass. Prof Pytko is an amazing guy who cares about his students, and goes out of his way to make sure everyone is understanding the material and answers all and any questions. Also flexible with the class to review if needed!
Pytko was a good professor all things considered. Lecture covered all content that was on our homework and exams. Only issue I had was the amount of homework that was assigned. There was days where there was very little homework, and then the next day would have 90 homework questions, a lab section, and a quiz. Good prof, just a lot of homework.
Long boring lectures. Lots of labs to complete but the majority are pretty simple. Tests are pretty difficult as well.
There was a lot of homework, but he allowed you to work at your own pace, which was very helpful to me. As long as you do all of your assignments, you will do just fine.
Prof Pytko is one of the nicest professors I've had. The material is boring sometimes and he definitely acknowledges it. It's hard to pay attention, especially with it being online this semester, but he made it as interesting as he could. There's a lab and quiz every week but I really liked the focus of the class, I even changed my minor.
The class is pretty interesting, but has a lot of hw. He gives extra credit chances at the end of the semester. When I was at the lowest point in my life, he gave me every chance to complete the work and earn a passing grade in his class. He is easily the nicest professor Ive ever had. I would not still be in college right now, because of him tbh
Great man. Very personable. Gives a lot of homework but it is completion grade. Tests can be difficult even though open note. So pay attention in class. Easy class overall. Never really stressed over this class. Actually some pretty interesting things to learn in there if you like geography.
A lot of time-consuming assignments but super easy.
I have had them as a professor for multiple classes and they are one of my favorite professors to learn from, and while they do talk fast it is mostly due to the fact that their lessons are packed full of valuable information and they are happy to meet with you after class. Would recommend finding a quick way to take notes but best professor. 11/10
Great teacher had him for geo 105 and it was such a good class learned a lot.
Prof. Pytko is okay. His lectures are heavy with material, but it's not too bad. I personally did not have any homework (Lab assignments), because I was able to get it all done in class or stay after and finish it. Only other HW was readings and quizzes. Overall, he is not bad, just talks a lot. Class material is a bit tough to pick up.
Don't mind my grade, I wasn't the best student this summer but his teaching style is straight to the point and clear. He answers emails and will help you if you have any problems. Pretty easy coarse if you stay on task (super important).
The syllabus is pretty clear and as long as you complete everything on time, you should have no trouble. Prof P answered emails quickly and was always available to help if needed. If you do your reading, assignments, and labs, you'll sail right through.
Professor Pytko truly cares about his students. His lectures are very engaging and interesting. He likes to teach his material with many perspectives in mind which I really appreciated. The projects and papers do require some commitment but as long as you try your best you will do well in this course. The exam is lecture based so pay attention.
I love this guy as a person, he is very knowledgable and caring of his students. HOWEVER this man treats this course like a 400-500 level course. There are 2 FIFTEEN PAGE papers due over the course of the semester, and on top of that a 1-2 page paper every week. ON TOP of that the exams also include writing essays. Long lectures, and long readings.
He was good to a level. The big paper you get at the end is supposed to be 10-15 pages and the rubric is super unclear but everything else is great about the class
Dr. Pytko is a very nice guy. His class is pretty boring with lectures that aren't very concrete. He's very understanding with the class if material or labs are hard. Very easy lab grader so if you don't know what your doing, your fine. Only reason I got a A- was because his exams are pretty difficult and specific on lectures that seem pointless.
The class is lecture heavy and knowledge of vocab words and terms related to the subject are needed for tests. It was an enjoyable writing intensive class with only 1 10-15 page paper at the end. The paper in my opinion was the hardest part of the class but overall he grades fairly. He gives extra credit outside of class. Interesting and nice guy
Professor Pytko was inspirational and was very passionate and it showed. Would absolutely take his classes again.
His class was very good, I will say though that his lecture slides don't have notes on them so taking notes is a bit tough. If you read the chapters, however, you should be fine. His grading was clear, and there was only one big project at the end. The ending project isn't too hard depending on what topic you get.
He is very informational, his lectures are always very in depth. He is very kind and is passionate about what he teaches. We had small homework assignments and 2 big projects, exams were both open note.
Easiest class I have ever took. Everything is on Mcgraw hill (quizzes and exams too) and assignments are graded by completion so if you do them you get 100%. I took the 8 week version and finished the entire class with an A in 3 weeks. This class is a lot of work but not hard work at all. TAKE THIS PROF!!!!!!!
I took this as a summer all online course, looking at the syllabus there is a lot of homework but it is all on connect, and you receive 100% for just completing the homework. I went ahead and completed all the homework first and then worked on the rest of the course, which i finished 3 weeks early. Best online course taken as a junior at central.
(ONLINE) Oh goodness, so so much McGraw Hill homework. An average week is about 6 connect assignments (25ish concepts each), 3 "labs" (textbook exercises), 1-2 practice exams (~50 questions each, unlimited attempts), and sometimes 1 exam. This class took a lot of time out of my week. I'm glad it's over. Professor seemed nice though.
Good, easy to follow lectures. Labs are not too difficult and have pretty straightforward instructions. Sometimes they do take a lot of time. Often set aside a part of a class period to work on any labs we are behind on. Tests were challenging, but as long as you study the material you should be okay.
Pytko is fantastic, and makes sure to answer any and all questions during labs. He typically alternates between lecture and lab days, and the class typically gets out early. His grading is extremely generous, and the exams aren't too bad, although they are infrequent. Would absolutely recommend getting a lab credit with him.
Split class time with lecture and lab. Easy class for lab credit. He didn't give much instruction for labs though and you had to figure it out yourself or wait for him to come around to help. Exams are easy as long as you take notes and study a little. I wouldn't take him again bc of the lack of directions for labs can get frustrating over time.
One of the best professors at CMU! His lecturing can get long and he talks a bit, but he gives so much info relevant to the course and he makes it all interesting. Very helpful professor, very kind, and he will always help in any way he can. Attendance isn't "mandatory", but it's highly recommended, you're gonna need those lecture notes for exams!
This class has difficult labs and is lecture heavy, but Pytko made the lectures fun and relatable. He is always willing to help out with labs, and is flexible with turning in things late. The tests are a bit dense, so definitely study for those and take good notes. Overall, I am pleasantly surprised with this class!
Pytko is a super nice guy. He can sometimes go off on a tangent but that makes classes super entertaining and interesting lol. He's flexible with deadlines and will always help you out whenever you ask. The labs for this class were pretty easy but the tests are really hard and he doesn't curve them so make sure you are studying for them.
Easy lab credit. You get out early most days. Lecture followed by lab almost every day, which can get a little boring. The only real downside is that the two exams heavily affect your grade. No quizzes or tests besides the exams, though.
Prof. P was amazing. He seems to enjoy teaching, and that really reflects in class. All of his lectures were enjoyable. I never once wanted to skip, which can't be said for most classes.
Pytko was a great teacher. His classes weren't every horrible, I had fun going to his classes. He had a grader who graded all of our homework assignments. The hardest part about his class was the final exam. It covered everything and it cover the little things. Other than the final it was a great class and he was a great teacher.
