I bought the txbk (although it wasn't mandatory). The exams from past semesters are similar to the one's you'll get. Do the summary problems from his notes for EVERY chapter and you'll be fine. =)
Dr Quirke is very attentive and treats students with respect. His review sessions are extremely helpful, as well as his detailed notes available in the copy center. Know your notes well, and work out all solution sets available, and you'll do fine. :)
Prof. Quirk is excellent. Very few are like him. He is the traditional caring professors of the old days. If you just study his handouts, and past exam you can A's the class.Literally goes beond the call of his duty.
Quirke is by far the best organic professor at FIU. He is very fair;the test cover direct material from the lecture and he gives partial credit generously. If you take it with him you'll have a great understanding of the material.
This professor is really good and is very kind. This class is not easy because of the material, but he help you a lot and the way that he grade is really fair. Take the class with him
there is no book that he uses, he wrote his own book, which is extremely hard and unclear so if you have troubles understanding what he's doing in class you're basically screwed b/c his book we'll explain what he's saying class. He's awful. Take some other professor
You have to buy his very unclear notes from the science club. It's basically pointless to go to his lectures because all he does is read the notes to you. Likes to go off topic. As long as he is on schedule, he does not care if you learn or not. He asks a lot of explain and justify questions on exams. Have to know material well to even get a C.
He is a very nice person, but has no idea how to teach..I'm sorry, but his explanations are horrible...he goes off the topics. I liked his "own book"...it's very helpful. I took both org I and II with him. You will learn from his notes, but not from his lectures. He's always willing to help if you have questions after class.
this professor it's a disaster, he doesnt know to teach
Dr. Quirke takes some getting used to. His notes are annoying at first but then you realize how valuable they are. Lets you drop your lowest exam and makes exams VERY fair! He goes on tangents, but if you study and do the practice exams, you will know exactly what to expect on the test. Exams are easier than the homework! Ignore his jokes though! :
wosrt professor in the university. Please do not take him. the final is so hard that you can't pass his class and count for 200pts. The notes are unclear and have a lot of mistakes that you don't if what are you doing is rigth or not.
A generally nice guy. Uses his own lecture notes which are a staple to have. His practice exams are all old tests and are a pretty good indication of what to expect. He also provides many HW problems with solutions, which I found to be harder than the actual tests. Extremely fair test giver and grader, but the material is hard and requires study.
QUIRKE IS A GOOD TEACHER. HE TEACHES FOR THE WHOLE CLASS PERIOD AND HE MAKE UP FOR LOST CLASSES. HIS NOTES ARE VERY HELPFUL, AND A BOOK IS NOT REQUIRED. IF YOU GO TO CLASS, AND STUDY HIS NOTES, GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS THAT ARE EXTREMELY HELPFUL THERES NO NOT PASSING THE CLASS.
He is very caring and helpful. However, his brain works at twice the speed as everyone else's so at times it is hard to keep up or even understand. The class is extremely difficult but he will do his best to help you through each step. Does not cover a lot of MCAT material though.
Could have gotten a better grade if I would have studied. His class is not hard to pass with an A you just have to apply yourself. Don't fall behind in the homework or readings because you will never catch up in time for the exams. I know that from experience. Willing to help out any way he can. He's a great professor.
He is a great teacher. Organic is not the easiest class to get, but if you apply yourself he will do absolutely anything to help you! He develops a relationship with the class, which make the class much more enjoyable. He is a great preofessor, although not always clear in his lectures, he is a fair grader and test gicer by far!
I am an individual who has done very well in his Orgo 1&2 class so you should take my advice. He is an excellent professor who is extremely helpful beyond traditional measures. Orgo has difficult and tedious info, however, read HIS book, do ALL the hmwrk, go to class and review, ask questions when confused (VERY IMP), and will get atleast B+
AMAZING professor. If you want to LEARN the material and go into the exams with a true understanding of what you have covered, Quirke is the man for you! I would take him for every single class if he taught them! I wish all professors were as effective as he is. Truly a gem.
GREAT TEACHER, IF YOU EVER WANT TI FIND A PROFESSOR THAT CARES FOR HIS STUDENTS QUIRKE IS YOUR GUY. GREAT TEACHER
He is a good professor,For test he asks u stuff from previous test and sample tests.MEMORIZE MECHANISMS LIKE YOUR NAME,LOT OF POINTS IN TEST.NO HW.GO TO EVERY SINGLE CLASS,HE ASKS STUFF FROM IT.read material every day dont fall behind.Fair class just memorization. Focus on details(I forgot some so I could not get A). NO CURVE AT ALL!Fair grading.
I took both Organic 1 and Organic 2 with him and I thought he was a great professor. Get your hands on ALL of the old exams (they are your bread and butter). From the exams, you'll know what to focus on in the chapters. Memorize mechanisms until you're completely comfortable with them. He's demanding and doesn't curve but he's def. fair.
He is a great professor. You do not need to buy a textbook because he has his own notes. Overall, he really knows his stuff and you actually LEARN! Tests are not curved but if you study it's not hard to pass with a really good grade.
I don't know what these people are talking about, this guy is TERRIBLE, if you want to teach yourself Organic fine, take him, and you should be ok... he does not teach!!!! He just goes over his own notes, like if we don't know how to read... some people do well but either they are gifted or live in the library, I've seen most of them there everyday
He's not that bad, but definitely not the best. Make sure you know how to do his old exams perfectly before you take any of his tests!! He has a 2 part final which is awesome, and it's not that much harder than his normal exams. There's really no point in going to class, just make sure you ask someone what he said to skip or to know.
i took advance organic, the class was just too easy, i got above 90 in all my test and the final was even easier. however i do like organic chemistry and i got a in both organic 1 and 2.if you are a good student and you like to study this class will be a pice of cake for u
I took advance organic, and the class is not easy as the previous guy said. You will get a straight A easy if you LIKE chemistry, this class off course is usually taken by Chemistry majors. I also got an A, but you need to actually work all the problems, and know reactions forward AND backwards. Also REVIEW Orgo 1 and 2, TRY ALL SYNTHESIS BY HAND!
He doesn't curve at all, there's no textbook (just his notes), and his test are short answer. But i read and memorized his notes really well, and did some of his old test. He has three test, and two finals, each worth 100 points and he drops your lowest midterm. If you know the mechanisms and can do the old tests than you will do well.
The only thing you should worry about is wether or not you want to drive to biscayne. He is a GREAT professor, he teaches well and will stay after class EVERY TIME for review. GET HIS OLD EXAMS, that's the key to doing well. No textbook! Have to buy his notes, comes out to be much cheaper. Got a B, could have easily been an A!
He is a pretty good professor. O love his notes, but it can be a bit expensive at times. His test are fair and really teys to help his students. It's not hard to get an A.
lets be clear, this guy doesn't know how to teach, attendance is useless, same as his notes,I had a 4.0 gpa until I took him and I got a D,he never curves, and exams are extremely hards!!run while you can!!whoever is writing nice stuff is because maybe they were within his favs,or is taking this class for 2nd time, if you did bad in your first examDROP
Horrible Professor! can't understand so many nice comments, his final will literally kill you,I had an A in the class and I ended up with a B-,DO NOT TAKE HIM!I spent at least $300 buying his uselesss notes, and I studied like crazy!plus driving one hour to , no words to describe how frustrated I felt on his class!!
He is a very nice guy but when he goes through lecture notes he speaks to the class as if they know the material already. If you're someone that listens to lectures then I wouldn't advise taking him because you won't understand anything. His tests some say are fair but it has so much material on it, you don't know what to focus your attention too.
this guy has good intentions, and he knows the material very well, but he;s a disaster teaching!!he goes super fast,he thinks we already know everything!tests are fair but he has a crazy grading,he'll take off pts for everything. He thinks we re scientists!besides organic chemistry for dummies would be a better text than his notes!Take someone else
This professor is the worst... If you can please try to avoid his class, he has no idea how to teach, not clear at all, he thinks he is a genius, walks barefoot through the classroom, very hard to understand what he says, his notes are super expensive and useless, tests horrible, final was ridiculous
This has being the worst experience of my life, he is extremely not organized, his lectures are a waste of time, he talks to you like if you already have a Phd in Chemistry, his tests are super hard, his finals are horrible, you spend so much money in his class, he is not efficient when explaining, i like chemistry, but he is the worst prof. ever
do not take him..... you will get upset at the end, if you are planning on actually learning and not memorizing stuff. his class is extremely hard, he is nice, but has no idea how to teach. if you have a bad grade on the first test, drop it inmediately!, his finals have two parts, they have so much material that they are imposible to pass....
one word HORRIBLE!the more effort you put the worst u'll do on his tests,he thinks we all have a Master in organic,he has no consideration for anyone, doesn't curve with an average below 55,don't recommend this cold-hearted individual who wants everyone to fail!!
i do feel like this has really being a nightmare. this class was terrible and the professor has no idea how to teach, his class is super boring his tests are very hard and on this class which is so hard he makes you take two finals all full of material, that is insane, please avoid him, hard as keller but worst teacher. avoid quirke if you can! :(
doesnt curve and the average was like a 52. has 3 tests each 100 pts worth and a final divided in two halfs, which are 100 pts each. he puts a lot of material on each test and believe me his finals are imposible and they are worth so many points that if you dont do well, you wont pass. You wont really learn, you will just try to pass, for sure!
I took him for both Orgo I and II.. for those taking Organic, I would say that if you want to have a good foundation in this science, take him for Orgo I. Then for orgo II possibly take another professor because there is a lot of material covered and there is no curve. But he is a good teacher and there is no doubting that.
Okay yeah He doesn't really teach on class and talks about random stuff but he stays after class and explains EVERYTHING in details..if people do not take advantage of that , then thats their problem..plus the exams are exactly like old exams and the finals are hard if you don't know your stuff...
i dont know what people are complaning about i have taken two classes with this proffesor and i think it was a joke, it was super easy and i dont think he is hard at all. the proble with fiu is that people expect to get an a in every class without even spending time studying. organic is not easy.
This guy has a good heart but at the same time he can't lecture for nothing. He will ramble on and go off topic. He grades fair but he just isn't clear in lecture. If you rely on lectures then don't take him.
waste of time and money. goes by his notes which are incomprehensible and cost a bundle to print at copy center. unless you are a total a$$ kiss you WILL have a hard time. if you do not do well on your first exam DROP. you will have a hard time trying to catch up. a total nightmare.
he is the hardest professor i ever took in my major. i know this class is hard but this professor make the class more dificult as an graduate level. this class is for undergraduate level. so he made us to buy his notes that are not clear and have many mistake. and he does not help when the student have problem in hearing and understanding. doesnt c
he is the hardest professor and helpless i know this class is hard but this professor make the class more dificult as an graduate level. he made us to buy his notes that are not clear and have many mistake.he does not help when the student have problem in hearing and understanding. doesnt curved and has two final exam.
This is a fairly easy class. The professor tends to go off topic a bit. There is no textbook for this class however it will cost $15 for handouts throughout the semester. If you put any kind of effort into the class you will get an A or B.
Hard course. One exam every week (12 exams in total for the semester) where the best 6 count as your midterm. Then, a 2 part final. Read read read. Stay on top of the materil.
Dr. Quirke is a very helpful professor. He has study sessions before and after class so if you did not get something, you actually have a chance to ask him about it. He gives weekly quizzes which were kind of annoying but help you stay on top of the material. Read his notes carefully and know your reactions well. To get an A, study hard enough!
He is the worst professor. do not take him unless you want to spend t of money on those useless copies that he sells. He is super boring, doesnt really keep the topic clear, always goes off and never follows a good order, you'll be lost, bored and pressured by his terrible teaching system where I bet you will not probably pass! U'll fail DONTTAKEHIM
Took him for orgo II.Did my biggest effort, bought all his notes (like $120 total, whoever says is only $15 is lying!).I ended up getting a D!,my 3.8 gpa and med-school great curriculum was destroyed completely. If you dont want to learn and fail miserably take him!! You will regret the day you enrolled on his class!!!:(
This class is one of the most challenging classes i've ever taken. You HAVE to be on top of material to pass the class. DO NOT PROCASTINATE or you will fail!!! Study hard, work out problems back and forth and you will get an A. I did all this and more and got an A. People who failed did not keep up with the material. Remember Med School is not easy
IHe's a great professor with interest in teaching the course. If you listen to him and actually do the problems (a lot of them actually) you'll pass. I graduated from UF and took all my premed classes there and compared to the professors Quirke doesnt want to fail you. His tests are super straight forward, just study and stop whining.
This class is straight forward. If you study on a weekly basis and keep up with the material you will find it easy. You need to make study groups. His notes are excellent if you read them and work out the problems as you go. This class is gonna be a wake up call for any pre-med students - if you can't handle his class med school isn't for you.
organic chem material required alot of work outside the classroom. warning! he does not have office hrs or respond to email regularly. tests are straight forward; partial credit given; no tricks. tends to ramble during lecture. i had to get used to his text. he will answer your questions before or after class. old tests in library are helpful.
Organic Chemistry is a difficult subject which requires hard work and dedication. I was extremely intimidated by the subject prior to taking the course, but Dr. Quirke made the material easy to comprehend - by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He loves teaching and his notes are the best. I studied hard and got an A. You can, too!
organic two is boring. I have to slog through material and try to keep myself motivated. If you choose to take quirke, get in oro 1, then 2. he uses his own text and covers different material. he can be helpful, stays after for review. he can stress you out! no office hours, disorgainzed material. two part final is 50% of grade.
I just took the second part of his final for orgo 2 and I could have died right there in my seat. I have worked hard all throughout undergrad, I have a good GPA. I studied for this exam using his material, his old tests, notecards, for days. It was heartbreaking to take a test that came out of left field. Plus he doesnt stop talking!
Dr Quirke is a brilliant Professor. He is dedicated beyond belief. He grades all his exams and is very fair with partial credit. However, you need to work hard and study all the mechanisms and reactions well. He stresses importance on understanding so you can get credit by explaining the answer in your way. Work hard and you will be fine!
Orgo is not an easy class but he makes it as easy as it can be while still making you learn. I actually feel prepared for the orgo portion of the MCAT because of this guy. He stays after class as long as you need him for reviewing. He provides old tests in the library that that are very similar to the exam. He gives partial credit. Take him!
Orgo chem 1: if you buy his notes and his practice exams and study those you'll get an A. He's the most helpful person he stays for reviews every class after class for like 3 hours if you need it. the class itself is introductory really; its orgo two that looks really hard..
3 Exams (1 dropped) and a 2 part Final. Buy his notes, answers to exercises and the old exam packet. Do not fall behind in his class or wait for the last min to study. A lot of mechanisms, synthesis and some retrosyn. Review a bit of Orgo 1 and 2 (there's a review exam [not graded] 1st day). He's willing to stay after class. I'm getting an A. =)
Quirke's class is easy, provided you study well in advance and keep up with the material. There are 6 tests, all of which are straightforward, but he drops two of them. His notes are an absolute godsend. His final exam was fair, though part two of his final was much more rigorous than any other exam given in orgo I or 2. TAKE HIM!!
easy professor, easy class, idk what all these people are saying, he has 6 tests, drop 2. the tests are exactly word for word from the previous tests. you'll be fine especially if you're bad at chem.
Hes great! Super helpful, his notes are very clear and easy to understand (no text book, just his notes which you buy). He answers all questions and has review after almost every class. He provides previous exams but you still need to know material very well &study a lot. All tests are free response.2nd part of final is the mack daddy of all tests.
Dr. Quirke is a really good professor and probably one of the best I've ever seen. He is interested in his students learning so he tries different teaching tactics, which do work. He does more test (6 total & drops 2) but test are shorter in length. He stays after class for 2 hours every class to answer questions. No textbook needed, buy his notes
His textbook is very clear, and is a baller at explaining synthesis. His notes plus Khan academy equals A.
Awesome!!! He is the best.
I love him. You need to take him. Super easy class.
Class is so much fun. Awesome professor. No textbook required.
He's most likely the most comprehensive orgo professor at fiu, and his textbook is very clear. I definitely recommend him.
Unless you are prepared to teach yourself organic chemistry do not take his class. Out of 200 students about 20 came to class, its useless, everyone was teaching themselves.
There are 6 midterm exams, 2 he drops. Make sure you get A on the first 3 exams because they are much easier then the rest. 2 final exams: first one is based on the first 4 easy exams the second is the hard one study synthesis and you will get an A like I did =)
Good lecturer, but not the teacher for me. Have to buy his notes, or have a good friend that will copy them for you. Attendance not mandatory. He's willing to stay after class for help. Tests are not hard if you study and know what you're doing. I recommend him for those who have a strong background in chemistry.
his notes do an amazing job of making the topic clear but you have to be able to teach yourself. If your the kind of student that needs to hear a lecture from the professor then quirke may not be for you. By reading his notes and doing the assigned problems & old exams you should be more than fine. just requires dedication!! I LOVE QUIRKE
Love this guy. He gives 6 tests, but drops 2. Don't take any other professor that gives 3 tests. Unless you can memorize tons of reactions and information for those 3 tests. This why Quirke gives 6 tests are very doable and even if you answer the question wrong, he gives partial credit because the exams are not multiply choice. 87 is A.
Great teacher and person. You won't find too many teachers like Quirke. He's thorough and cares about the class. Holds three hours of review after class (not mandatory). I highly suggest going to class AND review.
Dr. Quirke is the most awesome professor at FIU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quirke for president.
This guy is beyond confusing he is extremely unorganized and making constant and i mean constant trips to the copy center for his 15 to 50 dollar notes . is all but aggravation unless you want to teach yourselves everything don't take his class i myself will drop him and take another org professor that has a clue how to teach curriculum
I love him. He is the best. 6 test drops 2 and gives partial credit, what more can you ask for. If you cant get an A+ with Quirke then you should reconsider your career. Also, stays after class for personal one -one review.
Test every 2 weeks (good cause theres no time to fall behind), drops 2. No mult choice so u get partial credit. Emphasis on mechanisms arrow pushing. No book just notes ($15 each &helpful). Two-part final worth 50 % of grade ; if u suck under pressure reconsider. Encourages questions & is helpful. Optional review after each class.
6 tests and one cumulative final, given in 2 parts, worth 50% of grade. Out of the 6 exams, he drops the 2 lowest. There is no extra credit. He stays after every single class to hold a review. He is very sweet. He gives good & helpful advice and addresses you by your name. Notes are written by him & they're extremely clear. Never went to class!
I had a good foundation of organic 1 and 2 so perhaps the course was just easy for me. However, his reading packets are very concise and clear. Get your hands on the old exams (which he provides) and do as many as you can because they are very similar to the actual exams. Great professor, very interesting to talk to. Generally and easy A.
He cares about students. He will spend hours in addition to his lectures reviewing with his students. He wants you to learn the material. He loves feedback and is interactive with his students. He goes more in-depth than the other professors but you don't notice it. He is a phenomenal professor. I hated chemistry until I took him. He's really funny
Professor Quirke's class is not easy, but it is passable if you put in the effort. He gives you all of the tools necessary to pass. If you work hard and study his notes and past exams, you'll do well.
Quirke is amazing! He will stay hours after class to help each student individually. Material is complex, his "notes" and old exams are essential to get an A! Dedication is key, you can not slack off in this class. If you do not study every single day, you probably won't pass.
Dr. Quirke is by far one of the best professors I've had at Fiu. He makes organic very interesting. Do not listen to those who say the course is hard. It's not. It's just a matter of the amount of work you're willing to put in. I only studied around 3 days before the tests and my test AVG was a 97. Organic is very doable. Just do the work.
Consider yourself lucky if one of his O. Chem classes is open for you to enroll in. If every professor was like him, the hype about orgo being difficult would cease. Find his old exams, do at least half of his chapter problems, go to the reviews so you can secure an A (and learn). Thanks you, Dr. Quirke! see you in the Fall for O. Chem 2.
Beware! I came into this class ready to learn. Professor Quirke's lectures are useless because he teaches the material way too fast to the point where he's teaching (for example) exam 5 material when you haven't had exam 3 yet. You have to rely on his notes and previous exams! This is a difficult class, don't let people fool you!!
He made it difficult to keep my attention. During his lectures, he goes off in a tangent about something irrelevant in the class. He likes to bring up material that isn't necessary to know early in the class but you have to remember when he mentioned that for a future test. Be prepared to spend over $100 for a loose leaf "text." TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
Professor Quirke gives you all the resources you need to pass, it's just up to you to put in the work. There's 6 exams and your 2 lowest grades are dropped, your highest 4 exam grades count as 50% of your final grade and the 2 part final is the other 50%. An 88 is a A and a 73 is a B. Don't bother with class, read the book and do the old tests.
Dr. Quirke holds free reviews after every class, writes his own book and lets you drop 2 exams (there are 8 including two finals). I love his syllabus set up, loved his flexibility and would take him again 1000 times over. THANK YOU, QUIRKE!
Dr. Quirke is the best professor I've ever had. He is an amazing person and he is always available to help students after class. 6 exams, he drops lowest 2. Two-part final. The class is not easy because Organic chemistry is not. However, he teaches super good and his book (packets) are AMAZING.
Orgo is a tough subject, but Dr. Quirke's class is very do-able. He changed his class style this Fall semester. 9 quizzes, 3 exams, and a two-part final now. Drops two worst quizzes and one out of the three exams. 87% and up is an A in the class. All tests are free response, he's very generous with the partial credit as well. His notes are great.
He gives 3 exams and about 7-8 quizzes (you can drop one of each). The final exam worth 50% of the grade. His test questions are very fair and cover problems from his notes. He is the most helpful and pro-student professor I have ever had! He is willing to stay everyday after class for a review outside of office hours until you get the material.
Since organic chemistry is not an easy subject this class isn't easy. But it is very do-able. He is very fair in his grading and even offers reviews after class. He is willing to stay until all the students are done for the day. Very caring and nice professor. Drops the lowest test. Final is worth 50% of the grade.
Quirke is a very sweet man. He definitely cares about his students and if you dont show up to lecture, he'll remember. Quizzes every week on wednesdays after lecture. Drops 1 exam and drops 2-3 quizzes per semester. Two part finals are very difficult. Top tip would be to study from past exams. Those will save your life in his class.
In general he's an alright man. However he doesn't show much enthusiasm during the lectures; very monotone and you're definitely better off just studying on your own with his packets and past exams. I will definitely pass his class with an A, but overall I didn't feel so motivated to learn orgo as when I first walked in the classroom.
He's a very sweet man but his teaching style gives you zero motivation to learn the subject. You can hardly hear what he says and goes off on tangents while lecturing. Quizzes every week, exams and a 2 part final worth 50% of your grade. His old exams are helpful when studying.
This man does NOT teach. he hands you a large packet of notes that are confusing and hard to follow. if you want a professor that does not have office hours and is unaccessible then take him. Organic is a hard subject as it is and not having a professor makes even worse. Do not take him.
Quirke is a very smart professor. Somewhat different teaching style, his previous exams are very useful when studying for your exams and quizzes. I had to stay after class for review every week to better my understanding of organic & to get in extra practice problems that we aren't able to do due to Huge class size. You have to be in it to win it
Quirke is a great inspiration if you want to learn more than the actual Chemistry course, sometimes he goes off topics with facts about chemistry, however, it is really interesting. His tests aren't very hard if you practice the preview years
Great professor that really cares about his students. There are reviews after class if you need more help. Past exams are very helpful. His notes are amazing! Very considerate with grading.
This class is a nightmare. He doesnt teach just gives us notes that we have to buy with our own money. Only good thing is he gives half credit but otherwise he doesnt help much. Plz take someone else
Do not take this man! Professor Quirke is a caring man but does not teach well. Organic chemistry is a hard enough class, and on top of that he does not teach it very well and just talks all class. Half of your grade depends solely on Tests and Quizzes while the other half on a 2 part Final. This means no extra credit or hw to boost your grade.
I do think Dr. Quirke is a wonderful professor and a dedicated professor in wanting his students to really learn and work for the grade they deserve. He only grades from three exams, but one midterm exam is dropped, and a cumulative two part final. I do suggest taking this class with great understanding of organic chemistry and biochemistry.
he's willing to help you, lots of self studying. don't bother going to lecture just go to his after lecture studies where you'll actually learn a thing or two. make sure you read all the material before the study session thats after class so you can actually follow along and learn. review all his old exams and quizes he repeats many of them.
Please do not take this Professor. He is super nice and caring but does not really give examples of problems in class unless you go to his 2-3 hour review after class and even then you're kind of left feeling lost. Give out packets of textbook pages so you can read 109 pages per chapter. BE WARNED!
Very smart prof but makes things more difficult than it needs to be Instead of purchasing a textbook he made us go to library and scan his notes page by page for each and every chapter his examples weren't relating to the topic and told us every class that we were likely to fail his class and the MCAT. AVOID HIM! CLUTCH PREP TAUGHT ME everything.
Teaches super fast out of a book written by him (unpublished). Lets you know what will and will not be on the exams, only 3 exams and 1 final. Always has review sessions if needed after class. he's ok but I did not learn with his teaching style, has to teach myself most of the semester
He teaches using a book written by him (unpublished). He speeds through the lectures but there is always a review session after class. The only grades are 3 exams and 1 two part final. Did not learn with his teaching style, had to teach myself a lot of the material.
Please do not take him. Waster my money and time this semester w him Horrible lecture. FIU should reconsider having him as a teacher
I made the mistake of taking him.... pls dont make my same mistake....
it was a huge mistake to take him as a professor. He gets so of topic you are lost. He starts the semester by saying if you try to memorize organic chemistry you will fail but then makes you memorize everything or you will fail. He doesn't know how to teach lower level classes. I heard great things from him from analytical chem but don't risk it!
Took for Orgo 1 & 2, here's how you can easily get an A in both: 1) Read the text book, BUT focus on the bold lines and the "What do I really need to know." These are the ideas he tests on 2) Do the practice questions he tells you to in his emails, the rest are irrelevant. 3) 2 days before the exam, review the questions you got wrong/right
I did not attend class since it was a waste of time. Used Clutch Prep for most of the lessons and did the practice problems that he recommended. LOOK AT HIS PAST EXAMS (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)!!!!! I WILL NOT TAKE HIM FOR ORGO 2.
A very caring professor and he gives lots of partial credit on all his exams. Sadly, his lectures are very boring and its very difficult to keep up and remain interested. You have to spend hours outside of class teaching yourself the material. Reviews after class are very helpful. Grades are on 3 exams and a 2-part final.
Lectures are pointless, reads off his textbook & doesn't go over any work/problems (u have to make copies or scan it in the library). His reviews are more detailed & he works problems there but it's really long. Exams are pretty difficult/I'm just dumb at orgo. VERY understanding during COVID19, only reason I passed! Take another professor if u can
Due to COVID I was able to get an A- since we had a huge curve. I think now is the time to take him since classes will be online (more time to study at home). Having go to actual lecture was torture. He would go over class time and expect you to come to a 3-4 hour review after class. He's a very caring prof though.
He gives the entire grade based on two tests and a final, all of which are very difficult. His lectures are not helpful at all. He will get easily distracted into a random tangent. He says some stuff "may" be on the test. What? This is a high undergraduate course and he is having the students guess? Which forces us to read much more than necessary.
Teaches based on his book, written by him. Only 3 exams and no other grades.
If you are serious about doing well in Organic Chemistry, take Prof. Quirke. He puts a lot of effort into his notes and cares a ton about his student's learning. He has sessions after class where he gives practice problems and helps his students work through them. Do all the homework and try to understand the "why" for each answer. No extra credit.
He's very respectful, he will let you interrupt him if you ever have any questions. He doesn't grade homework, so everything relies on the exams. He was very understanding when I had a problem submitting my exam, I was so grateful. I've never had a more caring chemistry professor.
Prof. Quirke was amazing for the fall semester of 2020. There is no homework, but reviewing the notes constantly and going over anything you don't understand is a must. Had three exams and a final, however the final is optional if you want to replace a bad test grade on the previous exams. I am taking him again for Orgo 2 right now!
Do not take this class because most likely you will fail. His tests are very difficult but all based on the notes he gives. He is super nice and explains everything you just have t study and pay attention. Take this class at your own risk.
This man is a gem and the best chemistry professor you ll ever have. Take him for every class you can and you won't regret it. Amazing lectures, extra time for reviews, practice tests and more. He will give you everything you need to get an A
Dr. Quirke is underrated and excellent. You'd be hard pressed to find a professor who cares more about his students and their learning. His exams can be tough but he offers practice tests and review sessions where he will sit with you until you get it. Very approachable and will answer any question you have.
Super caring and actually cares whether you understand the material
Look, advanced organic chemistry and bio organic are hard classes. its crazy people complaining about how hard the exams are and how much reading there is, no duh. what were you expecting? all upper class divisions are like this. this proffessor actually cares, has excellent notes, will answer all your questions, and gives partial credit on exams
Advanced chem is no joke, but Prof. Quirke is dedicated. His lectures can meander, but office hours and practice exams are super helpful. Definitely use the textbook and check out Unstuck AI - it really boosted my study game.
I had him for Advanced Organic and Bio-Organic Chemistry and he was incredibly kind, he would make time for us to have reviews even during the weekend. You can tell he loves teaching and is super smart. I didn't enjoy the class because I simply don't like Organic Chemistry so I found the classes to be super boring. However, he is a good professor
This professor is really caring, but his lectures always go easily 20 min over time and he gets easily distracted several times over anything. He gives good feedback, is accessible but grades everything based on his book that he wrote. If you have any previous knowledge that is not exactly what he said, don't bother; you'll lose all points.
