Tough grader, but tells you exactly what he wants and VERY willing to help
very excited about literature, opens your mind to it
ATTITUDES, VALUES, PERSONALITY TRAITS...LOL...FUN CLASS, BORING AT TIMES..NICE
The only professor I've ever dropped in six years of higher education.
Came up with new and inventive ways to be a terrible professor. Just when you think he's reached rock bottom, he digs deeper.
gives out too much reading and writing assignments as if we dont have other classes. however i have gained a better appreciation for literature through his class

If a perfect paper came from heaven..it still would not get an A!
I submitted a paper that I had previously won a literature award for, but despite that fact, Reimer still found it necessary to give me a C. It is absolutly impossible to get an A in this class, no matter if you are a pulitzer prize winner.
I like the stuff he assigns us to read but hate the next time talking about the stuff to him. His class gets repetitive and boring. He's also the shortest professor I think I've had (just a funny sidenote)
Really tough but fair.
HE IS SOOOOOOOOOOO HARD! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
He is a horrible teacher! I have learned nothing from him all semester! Do NOT take his courses!!!
BORING! Do not take him!
if you thought he was boring, you just must not like lit. students have to interact as well for an eng. class to be effective-i really enjoyed his class and use of extras like videos and recordings to accompany what we read.
Don't do it, it's a trap!!!This class is boring and it is impossible to get an A.I think he likes to repeat himself, because he does about 400 times a day.I used to be love english and have even been published twice. Now I hate writing more than anything.
I can't stand this man!! I've never seen a professor that graded so hard in my life... He also wore the same ties/outfits day in and day out.....
hard, hard, hard, can be intersting, but also not very understanding.. is not afraid to tell you that you are a bad writer
interesting approach to class discussions and group work/GRADES HARD/grade based on your opinions in your reading notes (due every class) and essay question tests/no system of giving points when grading – just gives u a random number/my best subj. is eng,
this man is a pompous jerk. He has no need to be in a classroom, he did more for failing students than teaching them. I don't see how this man stay employed at Marshall University...he is the only bad thing i have come in contact with since i came to MU!!
What a jerk!! If you are an athlete DO NOT take the class!! He has a complex and he will not even give you a D. Stay away!!! If you talked to any advisor they will tell you how he is. Your GPA will drop. It isnt so much the tasks are hard. IT is his ridic
UNLIKE EVERYONE ELSE, I THOUGHT THAT HE WAS A GOOD TEACHER. I FOUND HIS CLASS TO BE FUN AND INTERESTING (AF AM LIT). I DID FEEL THAT HE GRADED HIS TESTS A BIT HARD, BUT AS LONG AS YOU READ YOU SHOULD HAVE HAD NO PROBLEM MAKING A GOOD GRADE. NICE MAN!
The ONLY good thing about this class is that I met the guy of my dreams in it. We helped each other get through the hour and 15 minutes of hell. I made a C in this class, and I don't make C's. This man is satan.
He lives to fail students. He has no life and is a bitter loser. I would not take him if I were you. He is not fair at all.
This guy was a bit odd, but he was not all that bad. Had him for sci fi literature class. Mostly watched movies that semester, but there were a few books to read.
He looks like Harry Potter..But Harry Potter is cool!! He likes his computer!!
All of the papers and assignments are on the 1920's. If you dislike history, do NOT take this class. He speaks very softly, so be sure to listen closely. Also, he grades rather picky and doesn't communicate well with students.
we had all take home tests which were easy if you took notes in class and read the books. he has a bad habit of not posting things to webct until a few hrs before class. overall easy prof as long as you attend class everyday
Enthusiastic about course.
Very nice, helpful man. Interacted well with students. Boring class, but other than that, COOL!
He is horrible... just horrible. He is very unclear on assignments and doesn't explain them until after you have turned in a paper which he gave you a bad grade on!!! Do NOT Take this class!
He is so unclear about his assignments-especially essays! I would recommend NOT taking him for anything! He's too picky and no matter how hard you try, it just doesn't seem like enough!!
He is a horrible man, DO NOT TAKE HIM, I had other teachers help me with my papers and said they were atleast B's, then he gives me a F. whatever you do, DON'T TAKE RIEMER
HE IS AWFUL I CANT STAND HIM!.... He is unclear with his assignments changes his mind all the time and you can never understand a word he is saying. BELIEVE ME YOU DO NOT WANT THIS GUY!!!!!
Great professor. Has interesting assignments. Historical minded. He is a tough grader, but if you ask for help, you will do fine.
hardest class ive ever taken, ridiculous grading scheme, picky about minor details, hes obssesed with the 1920's, assignments are boring, if you want a decent grade be prepared to spend majority of semester in the library. plus hes a snivelling nerd
Take anyone else but him, his assignments are very unclear and doesnt help you. Changes mind daily about requirements.
Run and Run fast
He's very boring, all of his classes are based on the 1920s... The Great Depression - thats how you'll feel after you take this class. He is very unclear about his assignments and is a very difficult grader. My advice, take anyone else besides him unless you really love the 1920s otherwise run fast!
An excellent grad. instructor. He's interesting, and he knows his stuff! I can understand why freshmen have a problem with him--they usually don't like to work--but he's great for serious students.
Dr. Riemer expects a lot of work from you in his class, but it's nothing completely overwhelming. This is college, so who wouldn't expect work? Although at times he isn't the clearest, he is more than willing to help you when you need assistance.
I'm not sure what this professor does. You have a reading assignement and then you come to class and get into groups, discuss whatever (sometimes you draw-- i'm not kidding), and none of it counts for anything. His grading criteria is non-existent, so your pretty much on your own.
very unclear of his topics and is boring
whoever labeled him with a dr. should reconsider...im a promise scholar and hes the worst teacher ive ever had...damn the 1920s and essentially(he says this word everyday) hes a loser
Don't do it. Don't. No questions, just don't.
He's a very personable guy, however the way he teaches is just horrible and hard to figure out. I'm pretty sure I failed this class just because I didn't understand a thing.
This teacher is horrible!! I went to class every night and did every assignment yet I got a C. I felt he was very biased in giving grades to people that were not english majors.
very unclear, not helpful, assignments are generally worded poorly, class discussion is uninspire...i don't mind teachers that grade tough but riemer is too unclear too often for me to be cool with that. avoid if at all possible.
Top notch lit professor. I ended up dropping the class, but it wasn't his fault, just lack of good planning on my part. very intellectually challenging, very demanding essays, but his classes are very conducive to learning. mild mannered, nice, sometimes sarcastic, but overall brilliant teacher.
Slander! If allowing each student to form and express his or her own opinions on a text through group work and class discussion is bad, then I suppose Reimer is horrible. If you prefer a teacher who will shove his or her interpretation of a text down your throat, take someone else.

don't take this clown. he is worthless and a jerk. very vague on what you need to do and gives out F's, D's, and C's liberally. he will complain to you when you turn something in no matter what it is. he will never be happy.
Riemer is a wonderful professor. He made the class very interesting. When it says writing intensive...be prepared we write EVERY DAY! He likes group work and getting in a big circle which can be annoying, but overall I'd take him again.
I thought he was a nice guy and was really smart too, people just want somebody to dog on sometimes, but please, this guy has more intelligence in his little finger than the rest of those nitwits
He was horrible. He is not clear about what he wants on papers and the group work every single day is completely boring. He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had! Avoid him if you can.
Very unclear instructions, very unhelpful!! I would NOT recommend this professor to anyone!!
Horrible professor. Directions & grading very unclear. Extremely UNHELPFUL as well. This is a great subject made horrible by a horrible professor!!
Not helpfull at all
Really nice teacher, but I hated the class. We have "circle time" way too much as well as group discussions. I worked hard in the class, and got a B. Sometimes I believe that he grades too hard.
A really intelligent guy; good for grad students, but maybe a little intense for 101 people. Really deserves better ratings than he's gotten--however, I agree that he uses a little too much "group work."
If you want a professor who will not hold their opinion over yours, take this man. Although at times he can be unclear about what he expects from your writing, I had no problem with the reading content or writings themselves. If you can handle the reading and work, go for it.
Everyone in my class failed. Do not take this guy! I missed class once b/c I was ill, and When I came back to the next class I asked if there were any assignments I needed and he was like I don't know. He wouldn't even tell me!
You mostly work in a group. When writing the essays you sometimes aren't sure about what he's wanting, but his grading is fair.
He is a very nice guy but he's not very helpful. I also dont like the fact that he constantly has us doing projects rather than doing what you're supposed to be doing in an English class. English is my strongest subject but to be honest, I dont know if I'm going to do so well or not.
I was nervous about taking a writing intensive class, but riemer makes it super easy. if you can read a book and write an essay on it, you will definitely get an A. you do get points for going to class. Stay on top of the reading. all you do in class is get in groups and talk about what you read. take riemer if u need a writing intensive
I like Professor Riemer. You have to read like 5 books and write a paper on each of them. It's really easy as long as you read the book. You do a lot of group work which helps keep your grade up. Very laid back and easy class. I recommend him.
Very boring. Couldn't make literature any more unappealing to a grad student majoring in it. Does not teach. Puts you to groupwork because he appearently doesn't know how to lead a class discussion. Why doesn't Marshall get rid of this waste of space already? He is hurting the English Deptartment's reputation.
A lot of homework but a great teacher.
Not helpful, very picky
This is the worst English professor! Every class he puts you in groups and it is boring and gets old. He grades really hard on the essays you have to write. I recommend not taking him. If there is another professor, take them! If you miss something he will not give you a chance to make it up if you don't have a university excuse.
Not impressed. He's a nice guy, but he's not a professor. Every day, EVERY DAY, you get in groups of three and discuss 4-6 specific examples of so-and-so's relationship in the novel. EVERY DAY. No lecture, no discussion. An interesting class made extremely dull.
Do not take. not understanding at all
He is a sweet guy but a terrible teacher. You can write and incredible essay and he gives you a terrible grade on it. He is not helpful at all and is the pickiest grading, especially considering that he never tells you what he's looking for.
extremely hard your best is never good enough for him so dont try. I'm a junior and he is the worst professor ive had.
I took his class online and it was extremely difficult. I would think that I did well on a writing or assignment, and I got a C on everything. He also took off a lot of points because I went over his 350 word count limit by about 50 words. Who knew in a writing intensive class you would have a strict limit on how much you can write!
This guy is awful. His online classes are impossible to succeed in. He will only post the weeks worth of work so you can never work ahead. He won't accept work through an email so if you experience technical difficulties there is nothing you can do to submit your work without the help desk, who does not always respond in time. Awful people skills.
I have a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, and certified in two separate areas (communication & Healthcare Administration). This class was the most labor-intensive class I've EVER taken. I would avoid this professor if possible. His directions were extremely clear, but his rubrics were not. Obviously a very intelligent guy, a VERY tough prof
The worst teacher I have EVER had! His online class is ridiculous, he isn't clear about his work at all. Can't adequately explain why you don't meet the requirements for an assignment and he makes you do all this work for a crappy 5 points! Not a good teacher at all! Grading is off and confusing, I don't think he knows what he wants.DON'T RECOMMEND
This professor is absolutely terrible. The amount of work you have to do to earn 5 points is ridiculous. I haven't learned a thing from taking this course. Save yourself a headache and AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Took online. The books were interesting. class sucked. Some of his assignments were interesting and others didn't make since. They are only worth 5 points! You can't go over a 40 words on some things. What!?!?!? waste of time, may spend hours writing something and he only give u 5 points, then the tests are worth more and he grades them very hard
This professor is hands down, the worst prof Ive ever had. I spent hours on each assignment only for 5 points that most of the time I got zeros on. This professor tries to limit your success in his course. He is a total disappointment as is his course. This prof is pathetic compared to his peers in the English Dept at MU. DO NOT TAKE.
I highly advise anyone who can avoid this class to do just that. Honestly the most pathetic class I've ever been a part of. Busy work. Long assignments that are almost worthless. Terrible class.
This guy... seriously needs to get off his high horse. NOT helpful. NOT understanding. DOESN'T CARE ABOUT STUDENTS. Doesn't really give reasoning for his grades, unless you didn't follow his extreme list of guidelines, which he takes points off for. I can seriously go on and on. I turned in 98% of all work completed and on time and still got a D.
You will read 5 books during the semester. You will have to write over 1,000 words a week in discussion boards and assignments. Each assignment is only worth 5 points and require about 350 words each. You will not learn anything. The only thing you do is read the books, which are fiction, and write about them.
Do NOT take this teacher. I've taken SO many online courses and this is by far the hardest. This guy gives you anywhere from 5-10 assignments a week (way more than a normal in-class class) and the amount of work into each assignment is unreal, all for five points a piece. I spent 6+ hours a week sometimes and received no credit for my work.
Quite labor intensive, but that's not my problem with this prof. I have never received less than an "A" on an English paper in my life, and I've so far been given only "C"s. His rubrics are unclear and grading arbitrary. Lots of busy-work that requires regurgitation. E.G. Cite specific incidents from a chapter which is completely inner monologue.
Terrible!!! When you ask for clarification on his vague assignment details he is rude and treats you like you're stupid. Tests are 6 questions and worth 60 points so if you miss one you're screwed. Takes off points for stupid stuff like font type and size. Don't take him unless you have a lot of free time for busy work and 5 point assignments
His class while, yes, a bit labor intensive is fairly easy. Most of the assignments are only worth 5 points. So again, yes, it sounds horrible, but in the long run it's not that bad. You can miss a few assignments and it almost doesn't hurt you at all, or do all of them and the test almost don't matter. Follow the directions and you WILL BE FINE!!!
I have never gotten anything but A's in my past english classes. This professor is has given me c's on every essay and test. The class is also quite labor intensive. I would every single tuesday night and wednesday from when I woke up until 7:30 (when the works due) struggling to complete the work load. I will NEVER take a class form him again.
The class mainly consisted of reading multiple adventure books, and then writing fairly short papers on them. The grading was fair, and the feedback from the instructor was helpful.
Got a 0 for an entire week's assignments as I was a few hours late turning them in. Failed me by .2 points! Was the last class I needed to graduate, had to sign up fnext sem. for ONE class for Marshall Plan. Missed out on a job I was interning that summer as I didn't have a degree by summer's end. Partial credit would have passed me, no remorse.
I took an online class, and it was very labor intensive. Assignments are crazy demanding and only worth 5 points. It was a 200 level course, but I've taken 300 and 400 level courses with less work! Most assignments will be responding to reading, and you are expected to use specific examples from a story, but you won't be allowed to quote it.
This class was absolutely awful. We had up to 4 discussion threads we were responsible for taking part in every week, which would total up to over 1,000 words, on top of some literary analysis essays that he graded way too strictly. Gives you 2 48-hour extensions, but you have to use them wisely. By far my least favorite class at Marshall so far.
Dont take this professor if you want an A. We did over 45 discussion all worth only 5 points each. We had 4 projects to complete, which he graded all of them very harsh. Any feedback would simply say "This is D level work" or "This is not insightful enough". He would never give you clear reasons the work wasn't good. Worst english ever.
There were a ton of small discussions, but they were very easy and worth minimal points. I struggled with keeping up with the reading, so I got behind several times. He also didn't give very clear feedback which was frustrating, but he did work with me when I had questions. Not a terrible class, but I didn't get much from this professor.
Lot's of homework and very particular with the style of writing.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT. He works his hardest to make you fail and will pick at anything he possibly can to ruin your essays. I have never had such a terrible professor before and this was even an online class! If you want positive criticism or to feel like you are accomplishing something in the course, take someone else. ANYONE ELSE.
He makes you do a lot of discussion boards that are complete repetitions almost every time. He has a very specific writing style he wants and will grade you on you incorporating his ideas not your own. It is very time-consuming and his feedback is completely useless. Hell tell you he dislikes or likes something but gives no indication to it.
Actually horrible. Switch out if possible immediately.
Worst professor I have ever had, class consists of only discussion boards and you get points taken off if you disagree with him. Almost feels like he tries his hardest to fail students.
Took what was supposed to be a 100 level comic book course online. Took it FOR FUN. Well, was I in for a surprise. Tons of discussion posts, 300 word minimum, two due dates a week. Ridiculous amounts of reading. Hard grader, extremely specific. I will never take a course with this professor again.
I have never reviewed a professor, so this is my first. DO NOT take this course. It is a sad excuse for higher learning. Unfortunately, this instruction has ruined an entire period of literature for me now. I'm a history grad, so every course I took was writing intensive. This was writing abuse. I wish I'd looked at his rating here, it says it all.
Do everything you can to avoid his class. I took good plays and it is taking up just as much or more time than my important classes. It is absolutely ridiculous. Dont take this class if you want to have a life.
I took Professor Reimer for Science Fiction and I enjoyed it. Yesthe course is demanding. You have to read and write a lot. And yeshe is particular about his grading, but gives you rubrics, drafts, and feedback. It is not an easy elective. I put a lot of effort into the course, and he gave me wonderful, HIGH grades for it.
I took his class for fun and to read more... well... I definitely read more. So much reading that I had received messages from classmates asking if it was an 8 week class because the amount we had to read seemed unbelievable for a 16 week course. Nope, just what he does. The reading is extreme and the discussions make it hard to keep up.
Please do everything you can to avoid taking him. On average, there are six discussion boards due a week; for each board, you have to write 300 words (no quotes AT ALL) and reply to 2 people with 75 words each for only 5 points. It was just too much effort for so little reward. He is insanely critical and nit-picky when grading papers.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! He is extremely harsh with grading as if he were the center of my universe. I have 2 majors and 2 minors and yet this class was more of a pain than all my other classes combined.
This class was honestly a living nightmare. While I will say I learned quite a lot from the class, I don't think it was worth it for all the time I had to put into it. The amount of work expected has been ridiculous. Please don't take him for your own sanity. I had so many stress breakdowns this semester over it, I regret ever signing up for it.
Gives negative feedback without giving suggestions, and sometimes makes three discussion posts due in one day. (300-400 words) He also grades like we are taking a 400-level English course. Don't take this class
I cannot stress this enough, do not take this professor. He gives out multiple reading assignments per week that you have to write about, then respond to 2 people. He grades the literary analysis' so hard that I think it's impossible to get an A on them. He also doesn't actually explain what you did wrong on them or how to fix it for the future.
There was way too much work assigned. If you want to read half a book in 4 days and write 450 words on it for maybe only 5 points go for it. There was almost always at least 2 discussion boards due every Monday and Thursday -4 a week- and sometimes 3 per date. You still had to do the same amount of work for less points which is very frustrating.
I took this class online. It's not super hard and the readings he has us do are very interesting. I also really liked the sci fi series we watched at the end. I will say the 2 tests we had were very hard and he can grade very harshly and they're worth 100 points when the normal discussion board is worth 5. Very. Easy to reach out too.
