I don't care for his teaching style. He doesn't relate the material well unless you're a genius. I don't like the disorganized style of the class and he does nothing put put problems on the boards. He already has them worked out so you don't have time to figure it out before he shows you the answer, so you don't know if you understand it.

His teaching for the most part is okay. He is a bit disorganized, and he leaves most of the class clueless during lecture; however, his exam and quiz questions are straight from the book. Reading the chapter's is a most, but most people will get the full benefit from reading before coming to class. It's not impossible, just dull at times.

Not sure if he plays favorite b/c he doesn't really tell us the average, and our class happens to be a much smaller class than his earlier classes. <note: I love biochemistry as a subject. I've worked in a biochem lab for 2 years> Dr. Roesser is one of the worst profs I've taken at VCU in 4 years. Since he doesn't grade the exams, it is not possible that he is 'playing favorites'. Dr. Roesser does grade the exams, not sure what the person below is talking about. The reason I know he grades the exam is b/c I asked one of the TA why it was talking so long for us to get our first exams back he stated that Dr. Roesser was still grading the free response. He teaches 3 sections, therefore they each grade a section.

WORST PROFESSOR AT VCU. HE DOES NOT CURVE AT ALL. The only thing that helped me was the SI practice. He provided zero accommodations for any students especially during a pandemic. You have more luck picking someone else. Please save your money .

His lectures weren't super clear and I feel like I didn't learn much even though I studied for the class. His wording on the exams were kinda bad and I got confused with what he was talking about. Chose not to curve the class at all even though he hinted at it in the beginning of the sem and previous reviews said he always curves. ended w an 87%

Studied very hard for his exams even though his lectures were quite confusing and ended with a 79 percent. No curve was given what so ever. Additionally, all exams were timed at 50 minutes in which you had do short/multiple answer choices, so if you had any internet issues or such well best of luck.

Instructions and wording for exams were not clear. Course is solely based on 4 exams and nothing else, so if you're not a good exam-taker do NOT take him. A curve was mentioned at the beginning, but NO curve was applied despite the course being exams only with nothing else to bring up your grade. Do not take him if there are other profs teaching!

I am not the type of person to rate a professor, but after taking this biochem class I feel as it is a public service to do so. Not only did his lectures teach nothing, with his PowerPoint slides consisting of pictures, but if you want to pass this class you will need a tutor or another way of learning. class test average of a 50, not curved......

I had Dr. Roesser for Biochem I and II. I had him during Fall 2020 for Biochem II which was in-person. I do have to say he is a much better professor in-person than virtual. He is very fair, and the material is hard, but I did learn a lot from his class, especially Biochem II. You have to study a lot for his class and really absorb his notes.

James Roesser is not good professor - bad at explaining and sometimes he even confuse himself. 4 Exam 4 Quizzes (440 points total) Exam are hard, not well explained and his wording is bad, but Quizzes are doable. However, I recommend this class because of the curve he provides at the end > 84% was A and 77% was B and 60% was C.

I have no problems with Prof. Roesser except the location of the classroom was an issue with my learning. There were multiple faults within the classroom such as the loud buzzing of the A/C. The camera he used to show the notes was blurry. Prof. Roesser was difficult to hear at times due to him not using a microphone like some classes I have taken.

I dropped this class because the only thing contributing to your grade are tests and quizzes. There is no homework, classwork, or anything else that could potentially help your grade if you did badly on a test. At one point he stated that most people did bad on a test yet he offered no ways to fix it. It was discouraging and so hard to keep going.

No textbook was used & his lecture slides consist of pictures, no useful info. Never had a clue what to study for tests because the questions were so nitpicky w weird wording

only 4 exams& 4 quizzes. From reviews I thought he was going to curve but he did not (he gave the impression that he will in the intro class)! everything is free response and only a few questions making each worth a lot!! he is also not very welcoming. I wish he was grading differently and compensating for the way he structures his class

Material is interesting and Dr. Roesser takes time to connect it to research / the real world. Not very receptive to questions in class. Exams are not worded clearly, but he offers regrades (not test corrections). Curve is NOT guaranteed, so be careful not to count on that. Attending class is a MUST as he will point out specific things for tests.

Roesser doesn't like when you interrupt him and will give very blunt answers to questions but I thought it was pretty funny. Your grade is based only on 4 exams and 4 quizzes so you really have to study. He gives you an outline of the exams the class before which is helpful. He also uploads lectures from when he taught the class online.

I agree with the previous comment. He is a great professor, very clear on what he wants you to know and teaches WELL. He writes down notes and you copy them and that is everything that will show up on the exams. No need to read the text so that is a plus! That also means you HAVE to attend class. He is not fun and not very approachable but idc

I had Roesser for Biochem I and II. He is tough; I will be honest about that. But, the material I learned in Biochem II helped me so much on MCAT and now, being in medical school, I am so glad I took Biochem II. Yes, the class is graded only tests and quizzes, but the information he teaches is very important (i.e. the details of metabolic pathways)

They're super easy though, they're extremely similar to the practice exams. He tests on memorization. He does curve!! My D went to a B because of his curve.

Dr Roesser is a very smart guy and teaches you well. His tests come from the lectures. You have to be really good with memorizing EXACTLY what he says. The tests mp questions can be very tricky to the point that free response portion is a breeze. Don't take biochem with other demanding subjects if you want an A or even a B. Good luck!

Great professor, but graded on 4 tests, 4 quizzes. Can seem unapproachable during lecture, but he is welcoming and explains what you need help with 1 on 1. He is honestly really nice, just talk to him during office hours or quickly at the end of class. If your test is potentially graded wrong or too harshly, you can talk to him to get points back.

One of the rudest professors I've ever had, but the only reason why I passed was the curve he did at the end. Not the most approachable person. He expects students to know everything and everything, regardless if it was taught, is fair game. Definitely go to class, take notes, and watch his old videos.
