I will tell you that this man is a genius in history, but he expects you to be too. There is an insane amount of work(all writing), part of it has nothing to do with history. More writing than my eng. class. Very strict with work, not afraid to fail you. Expects half his class to drop. I had 13 out of 32 students left in my class.would not suggest!
class assignments for 1301: 10 short writing ass. 1 full pg. each - 2 diff. response projects, total abt. 12 full pgs. each - 1 book report 3 pgs. - mid-term, final exam, 5 pgs. no notes - 2 oral presentations, 1 group, 1 solo. "its easy to pass if you do the work"ross. you have time for the work if you have no job, other classes, or a life.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS MAN! he is so hard. the assignments are hard alot of reading, have to take alot of notes.he expects way to much from you.the only good thing about his class are his lectures.

He gives lots of opportunity to succeed. The are lots of assigned and it takes a lot of time so I guess if college is not your number one interest then you should not take him.
This guy is crazy kids, notes are neverending, assingments are next to impossible, it is very very hard to meet his expectations, even though I did, it took me an enourmous amount of effort. Take anyone else, not Ross-Nazzal!!!
GUYS, he is a very good teacher, explains well, and gives a lot of notes, there is also a lot of writing in this class, It is a hard class, but if you study hard you'll do good, IF ur especting an easy class where there is nothing to do, then this is not the class for you. A very good person, I took him 2 times. 1302, and 2311
Lots of writing assignments. Do Not take him if you are expecting an easy freshman level course.
He's a former NSA agent and pays great attention to detail. You can't BS through this class. He's a very interesting character though.
He's funny and he makes class interesting.
He is really fun and he is a very good teacher. His classes are a lot of fun.Yes, you do end up taking a lot of notes and reading a lot but at the end of the semester, it is totally worth it since you are very prepared. You can also come and talk to him if you don't understand something and he will explain it for you. I'd recommend him to everyone.
AT FIRST I WAS A BIT INTIMIDATED BY ALL HIS ESSAYS AND PROJECTS, BUT HE ALWAYS GAVE ME AN A AN ALL MY ESSAYS AND TESTS...HOWEVER I DID STUDY AND THE ESSAYS ARE LIKE 3 PAGES LONG...LOTS OF READING ALSO...I EXPECTED THE WORST AND GOT THE BEST...HES A COOL TEACHER AND UNIQUE DRESSER...YOU LEARN ALOT!!
This course is the hardest class that i've ever taken. Believe it or not, I like it a lot. His teaching style is very unique, u can never get bored in his class. Although there are tons of essays, but i really learned a lot from him. I'm gonna stick with him for 1302 again. Guys, if u are willing to LEARN, take him!
LIke everyone else has said, he is awesome. Very helpful, a lot of work, but in the end I was very proud of my A. He challenges your mind, stimulates activity, very corky, keeps class awake, down to earth!! I think if you want a challenge, then this is for you, if not then find someone else.
He is a very good teacher, but his class is pretty hard. Lots of essays to write, and if you dont communicate with him you will not understand what he wants you to do. Not a lot of studying required, but you must definately be a good writes to do well in his class.
Great Prof., very clear, very precise, very funny and makes class and discussion fun. expects a lot, but not anything that you cant do. easy tests....i mean he gives you the topics weeks in advance ((essay test with 7 diff. topics to choose from)). Great teacher highly recommended.
Ok, this is the hardest class I've ever taken at HCC- reading about 3 primary source docs a week on top of the text book and on top of two novels. If you do all the work and try hard you'll ace the class- but get ready for a HUGE workload. He made me enjoy learning again- although I don't really care about US History.
Very dedicated teacher. Took his online class and he was very attentive to questions. Wouldn't say the class is easy but you definently need to do the work. Would highly recommend this instructor!!
He is a wonderful teacher, and very funny. He is a little strange but in an endearing sort of way. I love this guy!! I want to fold him up, put him in my pocket, and take him everywhere I go! ;) O yeah, be creative , I think he gives better grades to students who take intiative and extra interest in his class.. he is Super Awesome and Cute Too!
He's the most energetic person I've met. His lectures are more like stories and he records the lectures so you can listen to them at your convenience! You get to pick your own assignments.
He is an excellent professor.. I wish all of my professors were as interesting. Very charming character. Although, he still no nonsense, can be a bit of a diva.. but most geniuses are that way. Don't take him if you want an easy clas, but if you want to be challanged, he's your guy! I loved him, a joy to be around.
Very hard teacher however very helpful. Test and writing assignments are hard, you have to study in this class.
You will be writing an essay every week and also expected to churn out 3 exam essays that make or break you. Teacher expects a lot for such a basic course. If you have a lot on your plate it is advisable to skip this one or else you will become inundated. In fact, this class is so demanding you will probably end up neglecting your other classes.
The recorded lectues are helpful because I work full time and so I cannot make it to class always. I enjoyed the ability to select my own assignments -no boring tests for me!!!
He is a great professor. He actually cares to know if you are understanding his lectures and asks you to ask him for help. I strongly recomend!!!
He is my alltime fav teacher, yes he is demanding, but challenges are what make life worth living. However, if you are doing your very best effort and seeking him out for help, you will pass this course. He gives you the midterm questions and the final exam at the beginning, you know what is expected of you, some of you were just being lazy.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is an amazing prof! History is NOT my favorite subject but I found his distance education class to be quite interesting. It requires weekly text assignments along with additional material I found stimulating, rounding out the course quite well. His lectures never put me to sleep! (hint: ask about mental health days via email!)
He's a great teacher. Makes History interesting. He straight up tells you how it went down and doesn't waste his time teaching you the book. He helps a lot and overall, he makes the class fun even if you hate History. It is not a hard class and you'll learn actually learn stuff.
I took his online class for 1301 and again for 1302. His class is a lot of work but he is extremely helpful and very available to the students through email or phone. I would definitely take a class from him again!
love himmm the best.. gives work ... if u do it ull be finee
At first I was unsure about him but once the course ended I realized how much i had learned. Very good teacher. He provides you with a lot of resources and takes the time to help you if you need extra help. He really wants you to pass and he shows it.
Took him Via internet.... At first I wasnt really sure how I was going do... but my grade turned out fine. He his very prompt. Loved the class
He is a great professor because he makes history interesting. If you follow his instructions and complete the assignments on time, you will do fine. I love the lectures he posted online! Not many professors post audio lectures.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS... TOO MANY ASSIGNMENTS!!i TOOK THIS CLASS ONLINE AND I FAILEd..HE DS NT RESPOND TO EMAILS
This Prof. is awesome. If you are prepared to work, it is definitely worth it. He is a great instructor who really teaches and cares. I took class online and I often felt like I was in the class room.
If you want to go to college to learn, you will appreciate Dr. Ross-Nazzal. If you want to go to college just to do the minimum and get a degree, you will not like this professor. I took his course online and found it very interesting and challenging. There is quite a bit expected out of you but once you get the hang of it it's not so bad.
If you like a challenge take the online class. He is tough and strict with disscussions. You have to read and listen to all the material in order to get a passing grade. I like history but he is tough! No bull. You have something due each week and a research paper (7pgs) other than that he is ok.Quick responses to emails.
It's a very challenging class, you work a lot but will learn a lot as well.
Dr. James Ross-Nazzal was so insightful. His lectures were hilarious and educational. Yes, he does require you to turn in assignment weekly not to mention the research paper. There is a lot of work expected of you but he makes it interesting. He responds quickly to e-mails and grade quickly, I highly recommend him. I took him on line...
This guy thinks he's a Harvard professor or something. Assigns an unbelievable amount of work. Not only do you need to read the textbook and listen to his lectures, you need to read a ton of other articles and essays too. (I'm taking the class online) At this point I hope I pass!
I took him on the online course. He was not helpful at all to any of my questions!!!!! He would just go completely around them. I WOULD NEVER TAKE HIM AGAIN! I dont suggest anyone to take him for an online course
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is a straight forward prof, this is NOT high school. You will pass as long as you do not quit. Lots of reading, lots of work, but this is a college class. He's the best in helping me to succeed.
My sister and I took Dr. Ross-Nazzal over the summer for Hist 1301. Like she said, this is definitely not a high school class. I worked my butt off but I learned more about history, how to write, and how to think critically than any of my other classes. We signed up for his 1302 this Fall. Remember "Mental Health Day"!
Very demanding, don't take if u don't have alot of time to invest studying. Entire class = writing papers w/ critical thinking. I hate hist but he makes it very interesting. Get ready to write! Entire class is lecture & he talks fast (lectures are online though). Midterm was FOUR papers. If u can invest the time I highly recommend taking his class.
As an older student I found this professor obnoxious and offensive at times, especially in his emails. Listening to his lectures were torture for me. He assigned a lot of readings in addition to his lectures. I would not recommend this professor.
IT IS COLLEGE, I GET IT. AND PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO STUDY AND WORK HARD FOR THEIR GRADE. BUT WHEN YOU HAVE A PROFESSOR THAT SUCKS AND IS NOT CLEAR IN ANY OF HIS LECTURES, IS NOT USEFUL AT ALL. I HAD THIS TEACHER AND WAS DOING A LOT OF WORK AND READING EVERYTHING. BUT HE DEMANDED TOO MUCH AND DID NOT GIVE ANYTHING BACK. IM BETTER OFF ALONE.
Extreamly interesting!
Im in his class right now and at first i thought he was a ball buster. but after taking his feedback on all my papers and doing the assignments,i have to admit he knows his stuff. This is college your going to have work. There is allot of reading in this class. I have learned more from him then my Eng teach.if you want to learn take him. I would.
This class consists of listening and reading skills. I have learned so much from his lectures and on-line readings.Everything is turned in on-line and assignments can never be late. He does not accept late work, but it gets easy once you understand his syllabus. This is not a class for slackers.
His syllabus is extensive but crystal clear. He is always on line to help out! He has very high standards but I learned more from his class than any other class I ever took. He is the BEST!
He isn't that difficult, he just isn't going to spoon feed you. Get over it. Teaches like he's at a real university instead of a dinky community college with no room in the budget for whiteboard erasers. If you can't handle his class, you should consider a career that doesn't require tertiary level schooling.
If you have alot of time to dedicate to this class then you should be fine. If likeme, you work and have a full load DO NOT take him. There is alot of reading. Would be a good class for someone who really wants to learn about history as his class is very imformative.
Dr R-N was AWESOME! I hated History before I took his class. He helped me out whenever I had questions and went above and beyond to help me comprehend! His Lectures were interesting and keep me wanting to know more...he made learning fun but he definately makes you work for your grade! Highly recommend him! I am going to take him again for HIST1302
loved this class! He is top notch as a proffessor. Make sure you follow the syllabus, read all the material and do your citations right! and you will come out successful. I will be taking him for HIST 1302 :D
Dr. R-N is probably the best professor you'll find at HCC.He believes in hard work and thoroughness, but does not fail to reward it.Those who disregard his syllabus beware and if you do not intend on ever reading the txtbook or plan on researching his writing styles then you may want to stay away.Otherwise you'll be fine. His lectures are top notch.
My easiest class. Just do the assignments he ask for and you're good. He is kind of blunt though.
Took his online class for the 3 week mini-mester. He does audio lectures which are actually really interesting, assigns chapters and e-readings. It was hard class (since everything was wrapped up in 3 weeks), but not impossible. I worked part-time and still got an A.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is an excellent professor. Unfortunately, I was unable to complete his class due to working and my work load. If you enjoy reading and writing essays, he will teach you the proper ways. I am not a fan of essays therefore this course was too difficult for me.
I liked his lectures, but wish he didn't go off into so many tangents. The online course puts you on an accelerated timeline and there's so much content to filter. Also, he demands you submit drafts to a TA who i don't frankly believe reads them. The tight schedule for getting drafts to her and then onto him without direction nearly broke me.
took his online class for 8 weeks only it wasnt a hard class just turn in all your work ON TIME i got a B im a young mom with 2 kids and have a full time job and i managed to pass his class his grading is not hard.
Mr. Ross is a very nice and pleasant person. His class is interesting but he is not easy at all, his lectures doesn't help you when it comes to writing a paper because he lectures about the assignment after its due date. I had to read the book and helped myself. A good thing is that you will get plenty of free lunches.
Do not take for a summer course if you work full-time! Entirely too much work and he is not specific in directions and will grade you horribly.
Great professor! :) I did the 8week online course. All you have to do is provide what he is requiring you too. Also dedicate some time to this class. The textbook is very helpful. It all consist of short essays and a book review. Reading and writing is all your going to do in this class. So if you don't like that do not take it!
Took him for a class last semester. Absolutely the best professor I have ever taken. He seems to be a hard professor but, only because students are lazy and what an easy A. Do exactly what he askew of you, on time, with effort, you will make an A. Will definitely take him again.
I took this class a couple semesters back and his assignments are just INSANE! you have to dedicate your WHOLE life to this one class. If you work full time and take another class you WILL have a very hard time. NOT RECOMMENDED.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND !!
He is a very hard professor! But he is dedicated to his students and his job. Not recommended if you are LAZY! A lot of reading involved & his test are essay tests ONLY. I dropped his class only because I work FT, & had 4 other classes besides his & I didn't do the readings I needed to type up a 9pg midterm paper.
I took his online class HUMA 1301,he is a great teacher, very organized, you just do your work, due it on time, you will succeed!
The class is a lot of work but if you know how to manage your time and you follow the syllabus like your life depended on it you will get an A! I did. I took his 4 week summer class, a 10 week class, and full time job. You can do it! YOU are in charge of YOU!
This class was great. defiantly worth it. He is a very fair grader and will give you what you deserve. The class is very time consuming, but not impossible. I took this course online during the summer while I traveled to Japan and New York and had a job, but I still managed to keep consistent A's in the grade book. just follow directions.
I took this class online in 4 weeks. The professor is there every step of the way, communicating everyday through emails. He is very thorough in explaining assignments and return all emails. Its a lot of work and reading, but if you stay on top of assignments and do them correctly you will do fine.
Absolutely recommend this class if you want to learn and enjoy writing! Difficult class if you don't keep up with the work. A lot of reading and listening to lectures and all exams are essays. Easy class, as long as you keep up with all the work.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is a very motivating professor. He cares about each person's success and asks everyone to perform at a higher standard than most professors. This truly helps us for the rest of our lives. What helped me the most was reading the text book and listening to his lectures. He's very fair with grading if you put in your best effort!
Dr.JRN is the best humanities and History professor at HCC. I took him for a 4 week summer class which I thought was going to be impossible but I did great. I made A's on every assignment, his lectures are very interesting when you combine them with the textbook. Just stay focused and you will do great!! Read the syllabus before emailing!:)
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is a wonderful teacher and lecturer. As long as you do you work and listen to his lectures(which are very interesting) you will succeed. Don't be afraid to put time into the class, it's not a blow off class by any means. You will want to spend time listening to lectures because it is so intriguing. Make sure you READ!
Great Class to take!! Dr.JRN is a very motivating professor by simply acknowledging his accomplishments. His lectures are interesting. You won't regret taking him...don't let the work load intimidate you. Just give 100% and you will do well!
The class has a lot of reading and listening. You have to follow the syllabus and read ahead. There are some essays and the Chicago system of turning them in. I would say the class was not easy, procrastination hit me too much, however it was interesting.
I took his History class over the summer. A lot of READING. If you are lazy, I suggest to take another one. If you can read, listen to his lectures, writing essays and due it on time; you can easily get an A. YOU MUST FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal’s HIST 1302 course is concise, entertaining, and informative. It is best to strictly adhere to the course syllabus, utilize time-management skills, and maintain self-discipline to successfully meet the assignment deadlines. You’ll do great if you follow Dr. Ross-Nazzal's guidelines and the syllabus. Good Luck!
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is an involved professor. His online course included videos, lectures, handouts, power points, and documents. Grading was fair, but the work load was slightly heavy. I suggest taking this professor if you are willing to work; if you do the required work you will have no problem receiving an A. You truly receive the grade you deserve
This class requires a lot of time but the best way to succeed is time management. If you can manage to have a life, work, and take class over the summer, then I feel like you can do anything. Buckle down and read through the instructions carefully. He is awesome at responding to questions to give you the highest grade possible.
He is the perfect example of a real teacher. I took his online 5 week summer class. He required 4 papers and to get online everyday as if you were in class. He was very clear on what he wanted from you which is why he was strict. He was very prompt in replying to you when you emailed him and dedicates his time to you as your teacher. Recommended!
Great teacher he gives you everything that you need to succeed the rest sort of falls into your hands. Just read the syllabus and make sure you get stuff done on time and you should get that A you want.
Great teacher, lots of information. The only advice you need is to read the syllabus and don't procrastinate an you should get that A you need.
This class was amazing, Dr. JRN laid out everything you need on the syllabus after you read that it is basically up to you to make sure everything gets done in the huge amount of time he gives you.
There are no exams, all you're doing is writing essays. Two exam essays based, a success essay and a book review. Requires lots of reading but as long as you follow the syllabus, you will pass. Great lectures and resources available online. The class isnt easy or hard, but you will difinitely learn alot.
Professor Ross came off very intimidating. Scared the crap out of me. I thought this was gonna be an easy five week class. I thought right. Even though he came off crazy, he is an easy grader. He is very knowledgeable. Don't doubt that. But overall he was a pretty down to earth teacher.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is a very straight forward professor. He tells you everything that he's going to do, and everything that you should do in order to pass the course. If you can follow his syllabus word for word, you will be able to pass. As he said, "success is a matter of choice."
This class was very writing intensive but overall not as bad as Dr. Ross-Nazzal may make it out to be at the beginning. Just follow directions and you will pass with flying colors. Great class!
If you follow the syllabus, attend class every day, and don't slack on readings, you will pass.
I cannot profess enough about Dr. Ross-Nassal. I just finished his 4 week Fall 2013 class & it was one of my top class experiences thus far. You can earn an A in his course by following directions & putting forth true effort; you must keep up on readings & assignments. I highly recommend him as a professor, as he is an A+ class act in my opinion!
Great teacher! Put the hard work in and its a guaranteed A.
NO slackers PLEASE! Dr Ross-Nazzal is awesome, he expects the best from you so don't try anything less. I took the 16 week online class but enjoyed it. He allows options for your midterm and final (I answered his blog questions instead of writing the essays!) Every assignment for me was an A, I did read alot but it was interesting. He cares!
Just need to work hard in the class and you pass with an A plus
No exams in this 8 week class. Only four writing assignments. He uses recordings, videos, and documents online. There is a lot of material, but if you only focus whats on the essays you'll do fine. Just follow the directions on the essays and read over just the material on essay and you can get an A. Great professor and responds to emails.
This class is very easy, it did not require much reading or listening to lectures. I took the online class if that makes a difference, the online summer class only required some essays which were easy to write. If you want an easy A then this class would be perfect.
Dr. JRN is the "BEST" you can not do the minimal and expect the best grade. There are four papers to write. One book-review which he gives you a list to choose from. I earned an "A" and History scares me but I enjoyed learning from Dr. RJN>>>>> you will not regret it. Thank you DR. JRN
Here's the short and skinny- it is an easy A. He is not a hard grader- when you read the syllabus and the first few days of "assignments" you will freak out. There are 4 essays-I listened to most of his audio and video lectures (especially the first few weeks!!)and I actually learned. Don't get bogged down by the reading- do what you need to
If you are a slackerprocrastinator DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. IF YOU MISS ONE ASSIGNMENT YOU WILL BE DROPPED. IM IN WEEK ONE AND I REGRET I CHOOSE THIS CLASS. ESSAY DUE THE FIRST WEEK. IF YOU DONT HAVE ALOT OF SPARE TIME DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. CHOOSE WISELY
THE BEST PROFESSOR HANDS DOWN
He just reads of the power points so it can get pretty boring at times. However, it is clear that he is passionate about History and one learns plenty of things in class. Now if you do not do all of your assignments, especially the book report you are most likely to fail. The test were very hard.
Took him for 1301 and signed up for him at 1302. He was a 8 week class which i took and every 2 weeks you have an assignment due so theres a total of 4 assignments. a essay, a midterm, a book review, and a final. He gives instructions on syllabus and your on your own.
If you don't like to read you may not want to take this class. Dr. Nazzal is very informative and has a wealth of knowledge and passion for humanities. He comes across as being a lot tougher at grading that he really is. Make sure you turn in all of your papers on time and you will do very well in this class.
Took Hist 1301 & 1302 online. If you prefer writing over tests then this class is for you. ONLY 4 essays-liberty essay, midterm essay, book review essay, & final essay. liberty & book review750 words+. midterm 9 pages & final 9 pages. Easy A as long as you turn it in on time & follow instructions & format. Responds to e-mails quickly.
I took this 8-week session class in this Spring 2015 semester and got an A. It seemed tough because the liberty essay was due during the first week, and every two weeks came the mid-term 9 pages, the book review 5 pages, and the final 9 pages. If you prefer writing, listen to his recorded lectures and the textbook and you will be fine.

Took the class because I wanted the challange to perpare me for transfering to University. I really appreciate his straight forward attitude and motivation to be able to get the work done. If you are a slacker and aren't interested in challenging yourself to prepare for you future then do not take this class. Strict on deadlines but fair on grading
This professor is a great teacher. He is a tough grader but if you do what he asked and follow the syllabi, you will get a A in the class. No test just 4 essays that is it. Not to harsh but everything is on eagle online even his lectures. You don't have to go to class if you don"t feel like going but listen to all his power-point and you will pass.
I've read all the rating before taking HIST 1302 class of Dr. Nazzal. And I was happy to be in his online class. There was no quiz at all, the only things you need is 1 short paper about liberty, two 9-page exams and 1 book review, which are all easy and pretty much lay back for you throughout whole semester.
He is a good teacher, and is very knowledgeable, but the course is kind of tough. There is a lot of reading, lectures (mostly audio). There only 4 assignments to be turned in (all papers), but you have to log in to class everyday Mon-Fri or he will drop you. If you miss an assignment, he will drop you as well. Just read read read and turn in work.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal means business. His course load requires attention every day and there's an overload amount of material. Unless you're prepared to dedicate an extensive amount of your time towards this course and enjoy writing essay I would not recommend. Working FT and taking additional courses is not feasible while taking this class.
Good class. I did not expect I would get good grades because I'm really not into reading. So basically this was a 5-week summer session. 1 liberty essay, 2 exams, and 1 book review. All essays. Be prepared to take 5-10-paged essays with good structure (i.e. bibliographies, footnotes, etc.) He has good resources on how to make proper essays.

Very good Professor. You can learn several things from this professor.
He's an awesome instructor. I truly recommend him. Listen to his lectures, do your assignments, and you're guaranteed to pass. At the start of the course he provides a brief history on his background. That is exactly what got me very interested in his class. I learned so much about him and his past experiences are very inspiring.
The class consisted only of reading and writing assignments, including exams. That said, Dr. Ross-Nazzal follows his syllabus and deadlines exactly. Easy A if you take the time. He reads everything, grades fairly and truly cares about helping you to improve your writing over time. Would definitely take again - he is an inspiring professor.
Such a great teacher! I had him once a week, on Saturdays. Even though the class was held on the weekend I still looked forward to coming to class. He is very clear about everything, I would look into the syllabus prior to the class so you can know what is going to be due. He is very strict on deadlines but you have plenty of time to do work.
This teacher is amazing.
I enjoyed this class and this professor. It is a lot of reading and writing, but it was a very interesting course.
Lets just say his "project" for history was pretty much an essay. Also, he grades essays as if he was an Enlgish teacher. So you are getting graded on your knowledge in English and your knowledge in history for, I am horrible in both subjects so this class was a 'great outcome for me'.
HIST1301 I dreaded taking History but enjoyed this class. He does require that you write your essays in a certain format, but that's expected in college. Not an "easy" class, but very manageable (I took his 8 week course). No exams; 4 essays. Everything you need is available Day 1. I look forward to taking 1302 w/ him.
Avoid his class!
I love the sarcasm and personality of this professor!!! Disregard how he comes off! He is NOT intimidating or overwhelming at all!!!! He is VERY knowledgeable and passionate!!! He's easy going and understanding and will work with you. Only like 3 assignments, the midterm then the final. I'm taking him for my 1302 class in the summer!!!!
Wouldn't recommend taking him unless you're majoring in History or enjoy writing long, long papers. Online class was very time consuming and excessive. His class took more preparation time and study/work time than my engineering courses; That should tell you something. Aside from that, his passion for hist. is pretty amazing, he knows his stuff!
Do not take him for summer please. He was super super rude, his instruction was super confusing, i don't know why he has such good rating. I think he is better during Fall or spring, DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR SUMMER, I DONT WANT YOU TO FACE THE SAME THING AS I DID185
I haven't even begun the class & the syllabus sounds sinister: - "I am not available for any on campus meetings/outside of my office hours" -he believes grades are not deserved they're earned??? -life isn't easy & excuses unacceptable -we shouldn't expect passes -Repeats multiple times hes quick to gives F's PLS dont fall for reviews like me
This class was one of 2 courses that I took in summer. Did essays abt every 5-7 days. I appreciate how he teaches what ACTUALLY happened, and not what we've always been taught. I griped abt not having enuff time. He was up @ 3am every day giving us feedback and/or running 10 miles. That was my aha! moment. If I need xtra time, make xtra time. :)
Get away from him!!!! He will kill you GPA. You will have to write a lot of long essays, for exams you will have to write papers of 10 pages! I don't know what he thinks, that we want a major in History? please don't make the same mistake I did and choose another professor
AVOID during summer/online. There are only about 4 major projects, graded specifically as his syllabus. Do it as he wants or fail!
At first, it seemed that this class would be difficult, but he is extremely clear about what he wants in the essays. If you turn all assignments in on time and follow instructions, it's an easy A. I am taking another summer online course and I am able to balance both and get some free time. All you need to do is read the books and follow guidelines
If you have the maturity to follow directions; if you are able to dedicate yourself to the duration of the class; if, in the face of adversity, you persevere you will do well to take Dr JRN. Your college experience at HCC would be incomplete without taking an on campus class with him. Brilliant lectures! So very funny and cares about your success!
AVOID his class..
Read your syllabus!!! If you read that then you will pass, honestly. He will verbatim tell you how he wants your papers. DO IT Buy the book you want to read for your research paper at orientation. His lectures are as just as important as the reading! He honestly wants to see that you are reading all the material 3books buy2 PAY ATTENTION
If you can follow directions and write you will pass. You'll write several papers but it's not that hard. He's funny, answers questions, reminds students of due dates and grades fairly. Take him. If you are lazy, don't like writing or can't follow the directions you will fail this class.
His class was very easy . I went to class 3 times in a 16 week period and still managed to get an A . NO FINAL ! NO TESTS! Everything online . 1 essay per month . Teaches amazing . He's the professor that loves his job and cares if you care . Take him you won't regret it .
8 week class only consist of papers, have to use only his resources when writing papers. Follow Syllabus and u shall pass. Does not care about any excuse of why work was not turned in, except for maybe a death in family.
He's fun. He gives only 4 assignments. You will need to read the textbooks and provide evidence from the textbooks for each assignment. It's only 4 assignments but they do require quite a bit.. But over all it was not too hard, but pay attention to his lectures, read what is supposed to be read, and follow directions.
This course is very comprehensive, if you are not ready to study you wont make it for sure.
I love knowing exactly what to expect! With Dr. Ross-Nazzal, there is no question. Write the essays. Turn them in on time. Post in the online groups. Comment on Others. Easy A!!
Currently taking his class, love it! Instead of writing essays, I read his syllabus carefully to find that I can do a power-point presentation and a 10-minute video. I studied his Writing historically guidelines WORD by WORD, and I have been able to use it in my presentation and still apply these skills to my other writing extensive courses.
His class is cool, I personally enjoyed it. I took him for HIST 1301 and I liked him so decided to take him for HIST 1302. He's a funny guy. You will only have 4 assignments the entire semester (25% each). But yeah he's cool. I recommend him.
Professor Ross-Nazzal was an amazing professor. His History 2321 class was 100% online and consisted of 3 papers . Each about 4-7 pages not too bad. His instructions were clear, and he responded in a timely fashion and was very funny! I would take him again if I had the chance.
I regret taking his online summer class. Wish I had "vetted" as he repeats obsessively (which, ironically, he encourages) profs like him. Get ready to get lost in a sea of information; his syllabus and introductory materials are excessive. Have to use sources JUST AS HE SAYS. No exceptions. Constantly shares personal details of life online .
DrRossNazzal at first he comes off as a bit harsh or sarcastic but honestly he just doesn't like re-explaining stuff in his syllabus. His class is SUPER easy. I recommend that you take it in five weeks. There are NO Test one Quiz at the beginning and you have four assignments he post lectures but I never listen i got an A in both classes
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is now one of my favorite professors ever. He lets you choose the topic you want to research and that is the only topic you will have to learn about throughout the course. YOU MUST READ THE SYLLABUS! If you simply read the syllabus and follow directions you WILL get an A in the class. Very straight forward grading criteria
He was a very good professor. I took his class for a summer course and it was very straightforward. You pick your own topic and what you want your assignments to be like. As far as a class its very easy but MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CLOSELY. I can not stress that enough but other than that his class is a good one to take, I recommend it.
He will kill your GPA. I had a >3.8 GPA before I took his class. You will have to write essays or another form of media as part of a larger project. There are only 4 grades in the class and one of textbooks you are required to use is written by Richard Zinn, an avid communist. You are not allowed to use any outside sources even academic journals.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal has inspired me to continue my education and to always have a Plan B. He is hilarious, straight forward and instructional. In order to pass this class you would need to READ the Syllabus and do exactly what it says to do. If needed read the Syllabus before you turn in any assignment to make sure you did it correctly. Easy A! :)
Hey Guys, I want to be my brothers keeper. If you want to choose a History lecturer, please!!! DON'T CHOOSE HIM!!!. This is not fake news, its real. He enjoys seeing his students confused. Follow instructions you will get a C. Am a 4.0 student but i made a C in his class. :(
look just stop looking for a professor and take this one hes great im taking him again for 1302
Very confusing, I didn't know what to do
Just don't look at the rating, look at the difficulty, it's 3.6/5 Follow the syllabus and get a D
IGNORE the negative reviews. As with any course you most read and turn in essays. This class is NOT easy BUT its not difficult either. He puts EVERYTHING in the syllabus. JUST READ IT! The online class consist of 4 assignments, 2 of which you choose. I made an A, listen to his feedback when you turn in an essay. Do your extra credit. EASY!
Gave 4 assignments that were worth 25% EACH, will not answer Q's if the answer is somehow in the syllabus, which is extremely long, but not as detailed as he says/thinks. Allows 1 week late submissions, but takes 1 letter grade off. Turn everything in on time and take notes while reading! E-mail your classmates if you have Q's!!!
Do not take him class if you have other subjects, if you have a life and if you do not want to ruin your GPA. Go ahead if it is other wise. Even though there are only 4 essays to write but he grades TOUGH!! Like REALLY TOUGH! and good news is, he leaves you to figure out on your own that where and why did you make a mistake. Run away!
Took him for Hist 1302, I received an A,class is super easy, everything you need to know is in the syllabus. Those who complain are the ones that fail, he gives many extra credit opportunities if you just read the syllabus, seriously everything you need to know is on there.
Worst professor I've had in my entire life, no joke. Expects you to read the thousand page syllabus he gives you, and is extremely rude and sarcastic when asked a question. 4 assignments in which he's not willing to justify your grade nor tell you what you what you could have done to get a better grade. Tons of reading and no feedback. JUST DON'T!!
He's an amazing professor. There are 3 assignments (plus extra credit) and the final; many options to write about too. Pay attention during lectures, write down notes, and READ THE SYLLABUS. Don't let the negative comments prevent you from taking his class. He is not rude or mean, trust me. Be assertive, take responsibility. You'll do fine.
He is a great professor. There are a lot of bad comments about him but trust me his class is not hard to pass. And most of the bad comments, mostly come from students who DO NOT pay attention to his directions and therefore fail. Be sure to read his SYLLABUS, his syllabus may be confusing but that's why he gives you time to ask questions in class.
Major papers due 3 and no final. Papers are long like 9 pages. Easy A , great teacher. I took him for History 1301, 1302, and humanities course. Do the work you'll pass, we need more like him.
Major papers due 3 and no final. Papers are long like 9 pages. Easy A , great teacher. I took him for History 1301, 1302, and humanities course. Do the work you'll pass.
The syllabus has every bit of information you need to know, 3 Assignments, not a hard grader. He gives many opportunities to pass his class, just communicate with him.
Honestly, an amazing teacher that I'm pretty sad I won't take again since I am done with my History courses. Believe me, at first I was nervous and discouraged when I read the negative reviews on here. I decided to take the risk and let me just say, best decision ever. Read the syllabus, do the EASY assignments, have fun, pass. Simple.
rude and sarcastic.. His syllabus or instructions are not clear as he think it is. Will send you tube videos that are not related to the class. When you ask about the way he grade your paperwork will tell you not because you win the lottery before don't expect to win every time.. Stay away will destroy your GPA.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I repeat DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is sarcastic, rude, and truly an ass. He does not explain things well at all and when asked he makes a smart remark. He isnt understanding at all. His tests are all essay and are difficult to pass. He ruined my GPA over citations. Trust me DONT do it!
This professor seemed like he was going to be supper hard and specific in the work he assigned but he really just wants you to try. If you don't want to change your grade he won't change it for you. He ended up dropping two assignments for the people who actually attended class. His syllabus is really long but very specific
His lectures do not reflect your assignments at all. He does not require a textbook for the 4 assignments either. I would not take this class again because is rude and does not answer any questions at all the only thing he says is "refer to the syllabus" I chose the out of class assignments, which he does not read and got an A.
Hes plain evil. Please dont take him for your own good. Very disorganized person
Read the syllabus carefully before you take professor James. Looking for an A you have to follow each line in the syllabus.
His assignments are ridiculously hard. He gave the writing assignments as if our major was history. He also limitted us to only use sources in the textbook or the sources that he gave to us in his modules. Don't take him.
Focus in class, read the syllabus, ask questions whenever he gives you the opportunity to (do not just sit there quietly like everyone else does), KEEP UP WITH THE ASSIGNMENTS. He gives extra credit opportunities, do not be lazy, do them. Also, do not just look for the "easy class", take this as a challenge, not everything in life is easy.
Took all of my history classes with him and got an A on both. Students claim this class is difficult because they do not follow instructions. Everything is stated clearly on the syllabus. Highly recommend taking him!
Pretty good teacher. Read the syllabus and youll pass. Easy to get along with as well.
His assignments are hard and he is tough grader. Do not take him!
He doesnt know how to teach at all. Be aware and run when you see hIs name, save your tIme and money. I really wonder who hIred hIm to be prof? Do not take hIm If you wanna pass. Do not take hIm If Want less stress. Again DO NOT take hIm, otherwIse you WILL regret. Good luck!
would not recommend unless you want a professor with a confusing syllabus that he changes all the time and doesnt give clear feedback or notes in what to do for projects.
He is a great professor! I see a lot of negative comments I do not agree with. As long as you actually READ the syllabus you will pass. This is college, not high school so stop thinking everything will be handed to you. He may come off as mean but he has a military mindset because he is a veteran. If you want to challenge yourself, take this class!
He is very passionate about what he teaches and it shows. He's put so much work into his online class and provides many lectures and links to get his point across. THE SYLLABUS IS THE KEY! Just take the time and read through everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. He wants everything a certain way. If you're interested in history, take him. If not, nah.
He is not a good professor. He does not know how to teach. This class is easy but this professor makes hard. Don't take his class. I guarantee that you will not pass! Be aware...
This teacher is one of the best ones I've had. We Did 3 biographies of women from history, two essays one about an important person from HCC and another of how our fist semester of college went. He also gives opprotunities to substitute grades or give extra credit if you go to meetings held at HCC. Easy A if you do all this. Would take him again.
You legitimately get the grade you work for; I was initially concerned about the difficulty of the course but I quickly realized he makes it clear what is necessary to pass. He is quite unconventional which for me was a plus. You are not required to purchase a textbook. Mine was a 5 week course, there was an assignment due weekly. It can be done.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal comes from an identity perspective in his approach to History. No regurgitating facts. Its critical thinking. He had really fascinating short essays that made you approach history differently. Zero exams. Highly recommend if you are comfortable with your writing skills. He tells you what he wants. If you do it, you'll do great.
He can seem like a hard ass but he understands that most people taking this class could care less about it and are only taking it because it is required. He didn't give a lot of assignment and they weren't very hard either. He lets you know what you should improve on in great detail and sets you up extremely well to at least pass the class.
Honestly, all professors should be like him. He cares about the students, provides clear instructions, answers quickly and will grade assignment within 2-3 days. If you are lazy to read or don't care about following instructions, you will fail. If you don't understand and actually care, just message him on Canvas. He will answer asap.
Multiple requirement outside of the class coursework. Most instructions given in videos. Long winded and nonsensical talker. Seems to care for students, but proves to be a hindrance for those looking to JUST TAKE A HISTORY CLASS. Avoid if you are looking to fill requirement and be in and out with an A.
Instructions come in video form and are very non-specific. Lecture videos were nice because he is very animated when he talks, but using videos for assignment instructions made them hard to understand. He basically just says write about (insert topic) and use 500 words. But doesn't elaborate on it. It is however a very low maintenance class
Dr. Ross-Nazal finds himself fascinating. His online lectures are padded with pregnant pauses and dorky jokes. If Dr. Ross-Nazal was actually interesting this might not be a bad thing. But mostly, he's a man with a PhD indulging himself at his students time and expense. It would take upwards of twenty hours the work he assignments.
I took his online class. He is a very understanding teacher and gives many options to pass. If you listen to his feed back, you can Excell this class. He gave many example papers on how to pass his OER papers and gave us months to prepare. I was upset that I couldn't take him for my next history class. This is a professor who made an impact on me.
The first class I took, passed with flying colors. Reasonable amount of assignments to do, allowed me to see if I was making any crucial mistakes early on, and fix them. The second class I was taking, I did bad on one of the only five assignments of the class. I got feedback attended office hours, and got an even worse grade on the next assignment
If 70% of people complete the eagle evaluation they will receive 10 point to their overall grade. Only two essay, one midterm and a book review. He does want you to write a history essay the way he wants you to write it. You must follow all of his format when writing for his class.
Professor Ross-Nazzal is one of the best professors I've had so far in college. He's very clear about what he expects and if you have any questions JUST ASK. Don't be afraid. He cares about you and your success. I took him for both HIST 1301 and 1302 and easy classes overall. If you just apply yourself you should be fine. Passing with A's in both.
If 70% of people complete the eagle evaluation they will receive 10 point to their overall grade. Only two essay, one midterm and a book review. He does want you to write a history essay the way he wants you to write it. You must follow all of his format when writing for his class. He confuse me with the essays being written but I still got a B.
essays are your only assignment. 500 words & you have to use CMS format and footnotes. his stuff is not clear & when i asked for feedback he would only help me up to 3 things, only once too. instructions are so old and not clear at all. after a while i got the hang of him. no one els in my class did his work. if you put your ok. you can group up.
Dr James Ross-Nazzal is one of the greatest professors In Houston Community College in the History Department. He gives 5 Assignments and He gives a lot of Options for Your Final Assignment. He Provides you The OER Textbook in order to save some money from buying overpriced Textbooks. If you follow your syllabus and his material you will pass.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is one of the best professors in Houston Community College. Just do exactly as he says, and trust me you would pass this class with flying colors. There is only 5 essay and 1 final essay, he gives you almost a whole month to do each essay.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is truly a gem! From the first day, despite the overwhelming amount of materials he requires you to read, it's obvious that he knows his stuff and cares very deeply for his students. Teaching is a gift and this man is truly gifted!! He is easily accessible with questions and really pushes you to do your best and grow your knowledge.
I'ma miss this course, he has motivate me to love history, 1032 ha only 4 essay, and be aware you cannot cheat you way out somehow he will notices.
I was upset to see I couldn't take him for my next history class. This is by far the best professor I have met. He is very understanding, has amazing videos, and does his best to prepare you for your future. He is a must take professor. I benefit most from his class with learning Chicago style writing.
"don't take his class" will be the best blessing you can have
I took HIST 1302 from him, and had a lot of assignments that were well paced and spread out. I was able to see if I was falling behind, and got help accordingly. In HIST 1301, we only had five papers. Do bad on one, your screwed out of an A and most likely a B. I tried getting help, but he gave bad feedback and no clear criteria for what he wanted.
Professor James Ross-Nazzal is a great teacher! He is very strict with what he wants on his assignments, but if you follow his rules you will do good. If you take advantage of the extra credit he gives you will for sure pass this class! I took him for online class and the videos he uploads are interesting and creative.
Easy A. There was only 4 Writing (100-500) assignment for the whole semster but he does expect you to follow the instructions he in his syllabus and on How to Write Historially PDF. Citing correctly is really important in his class . Also, for the 4 essays you have choices and instructions on what to wirte about. I am not a great writer but passed
4-5 essay assignments were the only assignment for this course. Some of the essays required in dept research and higher thinking but if you're a decent writer, you will do fine. He gave a lot of extra credit opportunities and good feedback.
Dr. Ross-Nazzal is an amazing professor! He is hilarious and knows history! 4 written assignments, min 500 words, chicago style citation. I took him for 1301 and 1302 and his lectures are great. He is there for you outside class and any questions you might have he is quick to respond. Extra credit available and grades fair according to instructions
He is a great proffessor and understands that sometimes things happened that affect our academic output, you can talk to him. His lectures are entairtaining and with lots to learn. There is not a lot of assigments for this class but you have to research and read a lot. Always get started on assigments early, DO NOT WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE!
This was by far the best History class I have ever taken. The professor gives you all the material you need to succeed in his class. You have the option to choice from three books to read. That will most likely you will use for the research paper. Two exams and research paper. The research paper he gives three topics and you choose one.
Took him for the summer term. We had 1 essay due every week. Read the essay instructions on the syllabus! If you miss any of his requirements he will grade you a D no exceptions. No late submissions allowed. His answers are so vague when you email him with questions, be prepared to be going back and forth. He's the toughest essay grader I've had.
If you like writing papers (Hello, English Majors!), then I highly suggest taking his class. You're graded on 3 or 4 essays, that is all. So if you're a writer, this will be very low maintenance for you. He seems a little intimidating at first, but as long as you READ HIS RUBRIC CAREFULLY to follow his preferred format, you'll do very well.
This class consists of 4 essays and that's all. Do not go over word count and make sure it's in chicago style! You will fail if it's not. I failed the first essay but he allows you to write an essay about the grade you think you should receive and then he will change your first grade. It's very doable I just hate essays.
His class consisted of four essays and wants it in a very specific way. I honestly found that he cared more about the format than the information and really nitpicked things, but still cared about what you wrote about. If you're not a good essay writer, I wouldn't recommend his class
Our History 1302 was structured around the HCC libraries database, he teaches students how to format in Chicago style, If you follow instructions with the syllabus things should be fine. He welcomes students to learn so it is okay to make minimal errors in efforts to learn. He is a wonderful instructor!
Dr Ross-Nazzal was the BEST professor I have had in college so far. His grading criteria is extremely clear and every question you could possibly have is answered in the syllabus and in his videos. If you follow directions, you WILL be successful. He cares about real learning and cares about his students as people. Take his class.
Dr.Ross-Nassal was my first professor for Hist1301 and the BEST at first he was very intimidating but his grading criteria is very clear you have 4 essays to complete throughout the whole course and everything you need to know. as long as you SHOW UP and PARTICIPATE his classes will be a breeze. take his class 10/10
The only graded work are the assigned essays. As long as you exactly follow his guidelines in the syllabus you will be fine.
This was a good class (for it to be an essay only class). The prof uses a lot of analogies to get his point across. Just remember to cite EVERYTHING you type in your essays(even your own thoughts). This is very much a trial and error class with the "ungraded" grading scale.Class can seem tough, but as long as you try to make an effort you'll do fine.
dont take this class please
I really recommend to read and watch the lectures that he provides when you do your essays. Once you do that, you'll have a better understanding of what he wants for his essays so you can get a great grade. For the ungrading essay, make SURE to provide enough details on why you deserve the grade.
You grade yourself! Professor Ross-Nazzal is a great professor in that he teaches you how to think!. I took this class as an 8 week course and made an A. Each week, we were assigned a topic and creative freedom to share our perspective based on information we collected on our own. I liked how he encouraged us to write our history.
We would grade our own work. For every assignment we were required to write a brief paragraph at the end explaining what grade we deserved and why, he would later agree or disagree with our grade. I would always grade my assignments with a low A but luckily I got a 100 on every assignment, so I passed with an A+. He's a Great Professor!
The best professor ever. Took his 1301 and 1302. 4 essays in general, 2 are the main essays while the other 2 are the grade yourself essay, yes you grade yourself. The main essays are very easy if you read and follow the instructions and the grading essay will be an explanatory essay stating why you should have the grade you have given yourself.
Amazing professor, I took two of his classes 1301 and 1302, he is the best, only 4 essays, just be prepare to read not a lot but some, because you are expected to write essays that fulfill his criteria but you can pick your topic, also be ready to search a lot. I watch his video on YouTube and they helped me a lot!
Worst history professor i have ever taken. If your looking for a professor you can grow and learn from HE IS NOT YOUR PROFESSOR.
This professor was awful. It's true that the class is easy but!!!!!!!! he wants the essays in a very specific way and the instructions he provides are so confusing and DO NOT even think about asking him questions for clarification. I regret taking this class with him even though I got an A.
Took the class on summer and it does involve a lot of reading. and the Professor Ross-Nazzal is understandable, and he does help you if you ask for help. The class wasn't complicated as I thought when I saw the reviews. Final you will have an essay to write, which is not bad to be honest. Definitely would take his class again.
I just started his class yesterday but I already feel so frustrated. His instructions are unclear and his work is unorganized. The videos he posts have poor audio quality and you cannot watch them with captions neither can you increase the playback speed. So you're just stuck listening to him ramble. I should have picked another prof.
he is SO hard to reach, he failed me even tho I got a 98 on the one thing he graded me for. SOOO MUCH LECTURES AND SOOO MUCH READING extremely hard to take as an online 8week course
IM WARNING YOU DO NOT PICK THIS CLASS UNLESS U WANT AN F. HORRIBLE PROFESSOR
Professor Ross-Nazzal's class can be a breeze if you stay engaged. The grading is straightforward, with essays that let you showcase your learning. unstuck study ai was a game-changer for me in preparing for the exams. Definitely worth taking!
Dr. James Ross-Nazzal has 6-7 assignments, seeing placeholders of 0s makes it hard to gauge our progress. Many assignments require watching his informative videos stored in course modules, which can be time-consuming. Additionally, assignment instructions are often scattered across readings, requiring thorough review to understand expectations.
worst teacher. All of his instructions for the essays were all over the place. His different approach is very weird. He says its for the better. If you arent taking a History major in college DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. I literally dropped out.
worst history teacher to exist he just blabs and blabs on saying random stuff about his wife idek
PLEASE DONT TAKE HIM I PROMISE ANY OTHER TEACHER WOULD BE BETTER. INSTRUCTIONS ALL OVER THE PLACE AND GIVES 0
