HE IS A GOOD TEACHER, HE ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE HE WANTS TO HELP YOU PASS, HE HAS A 95% PASSING RATE, AND HE MAKES ORGANIC CHEMISTRY SEEM ENTERTAINING
His tests are HARD. They are multiple choice, but each question has 5 possible answers. I took the course while minoring in Chem, and I dropped his course and decided to switch my minor to environmental science. The tests require formidable studying and preparation to do well on. He curves tho.

for not being able to teach...and giving tests the way he does...stuff that he didnt go into specifics...he really sux and is an **** when it comes to giving someone a tenth of a point..but you do have to expand your mind and think critically to succeed

Dr. Salvador is an extremely intelligent individual that actually tries to relate to students, and unlike other professors, doesn't confine himself to his Ph.D. (he actually has extensive computer/programming knowledge as well) And he makes his classes fun and interactive, and he actually knows how to teach, contrary to what has been said.
This instructor is very helpfull and student friendly. He also covers all the material clearly and provides you with old exams to study before each test. He also has other perks that will benefit you while in his class since the coarse it self is very hard.
Very good professor but will give you the grade you earn in his class not a point or half a point or even a quarter of a point more. Too bad he isnt teaching organic chemistry in the semesters to come anymore because he was probably the only chance you could get to understand the material without killing yourself.
He's an ok professor and his class is hard, but if you study you'll be ok. Best if you get a student solutions manual to the book you are using. Doesn't take attendance. Tests are multiple choice. Go to his office for help. Do all the online homeworks, they help your grade. Uses chemical structures to lecture. Go to class or else u won't understand
He is a very good teacher, gives in class x-tra credit, and allows retake exams. Writes messy notes and exams are hard!
Online Lessons: Did not go along with what we learned in class that week. Videos: Very helpful when studying and checking notes. Exam retakes: Very helpful. Workshops should have been 2hrs long.In class questions were a bit tricky. I learned a lot in the class. You have to put in the hours though. You can't just study before the test, but everyday.
Very difficult and tricky!
Although attendance is not required he offers daily extra credits that are necessary to ensure you pass his class.
Dr Salvador's class was great. He really works hard records his lectures and tries everything he can do to help his students. His test can be tricky and difficult but if yuo do your homework do the exam retake come to class do as much extra credit as you can work hard you'll make the grade you want or at least a good one
Very inconsiderable, thinks everything revolves around him and his rules/theories
Awesome professor is all I have to say, tough exams but the material sticks to your head if you dedicate yourself. His rules and theories are based on facts. He is very intelligent and is very helpful. Take him for any class if you want to learn and get what your tuition is paying for. This is a perfect example of what a professor should be like.
Doctor Salvador is an extrimely good teacher, very intellingent, ready to answer all the questions you may ask him, and really very prepared and organized. Organic Chemistry is really difficult, but his videos and lectures will help you a lot in understanding a little better what's going on! Also, answer those extra credit questions...they'll help!
Dr. Salvador's class is not easy. I was unable to attend some lectures due to illness and I could not catch up. The textbook he assigns is not very helpful at all and the Ta who taught my workshop was not knowledgable. He could barely answer any of our questions.
Extremely hard class. Good, helpful teacher, but the exams are very very tough. Textbook does not help at all, would prefer to have an expensive good book, than a bad free one. The class pace is very fast, you miss 1 min and you get totally lost. Always have a feeling of stupidity when I leave the class/exams
Good teacher. He is very tough and can be a total ***. This class is a total GPA ruiner.
It appears that he is a self righteous professor who believes he is the only professor in the country that is honest with his students. Though every semester the average for his exams are 50 or less. VERY disorganized and the videos are horrible and scatter brained. Will not listen or even acknowledge there could remotely be a problem.
If there's another professor pick the other guy.
The exams are very hard and they are nothing like the problems in the homework or the ones discussed in class.
Great professor. Very helpful. Very smart. You will learn a lot with him, but you will really have to work extremely hard to get an A. Thank you dr salvador.
If you want to learn, take his class, if not EPCC is a great way to start.
He's an outstanding professor that has developed an excellent course with website hw, recorded lecture videos and very helpful study charts and notes. As hes an outstanding professor and gives many extra credit points he expects you put some effort and time. This is a hard class that requires time do not take lightly. Youll learn a lot:)
he is ok
a lot of information, but a very good class. he knows so much, but again the material is very difficulty. tests are insane and lab quizzes are hard as well, but he has a very good way of getting people involved.
Great teacher, funny too.
He is a great professor but the class is hard. He really knows what he is talking about, but his test are impossible to pass, he curves the test and the final grade. So make sure to always be above average. All the classes are recorded so if you miss one class you can go back and watch it. But its good to go to class because he gives extra credit.
Dr.Salvador has the best intentions but his class really feels like boot camp. There are an immense amount of homework exercises and at in class exercises. This is really a full-time job. Great professor, just be prepared to WORK.
Can't go a day without studying. He provides plenty of extra credit so attendance is highly recommended. He does post videos of his lectures in case you miss a class or need to review. He goes through lectures a little bit fast and sometimes confuses you a little. But he is a good professor and this class isn't to be taken lightly.
he was good at giving examples, but is unable to teach without them. he would not help a student with a .2 difference in a grade even though she worked really hard. but he is sometimes funny which helps. he does have the habit of teaching while making you work out a problem at the same time so sometimes people dont learn
Excellent professor! Extremely hard class. Very time consuming. Its a real class, you need to attend, you need to do homework's in advance, do not wait. I highly recommend it.
HE goes on with the lesson when he expects you to do a problem... very hard to keep up when you are done doing the questions and then you are lost for the rest of the class. Not a fun class at all!! Hate it
IF YOU WANT A GOOD GRADE THAT WONT KILL YOUR GPA DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! He is the worst professor i have ever encountered at UTEP. He is arrogant thinking that all the textbooks are wrong and he is right. You will be lost from the 2nd week on. I really cant understand how anyone would recommend him. His class averages are always below 55%!
Horrible class! Arrogant teacher, and the lessons are hard for Chem majors! Had multiple tutors who majored in chemistry wonder what in the world this guy was trying to prove. Yes, there is extra credit provided that is worth half a point for incorrect answers but he has to make it this way since the class average for exams are always below 50%.
All you have to do is make sure you get 100's on all your homework and be there in class and answer all the extra credit questions and you have a good shot at an A
great professor
He is a great professor, if you really want to learn organic chemistry he is the perfect option. Prepare yourself for many homeworks and you really have to study everyday. Dr. Salvador give you the right tools to succeed but you have to work hard
Do not take Organic Chemistry with this man. JUST DO NOT! The book is just very inconsistent and is just not a very good book. The graham solomons book is so much better. His tests are ridiculously hard and purposely makes them that way because then he lets you retake it. Also the homework has nothing to do with the exams.
Excellent teacher but don't agree with his tests!! Hate how he posts a question in lecture (which is extra credit) and continues on with his lecture. Definitely recommend working in a group!! Makes life a tad bit easier. Do your hw in advance. Oh and his test reviews suck!!
Phenomenal class! Insanely difficult! Stay ahead of lecture. Do all homework and watch videos in advance, they are exam preps, they are also extra credit questions asked in class; wait and time will evaporate, frustration will be exponential. The semester is a prep for the ACS. Want a Mickey Mouse class take anyone else, want to learn take Salvador.
Dr. Salvador is by far the best professor and person I know at utep. You won't encounter the level of difficulty anywhere else, but with the struggle and sacrifice you will have and will have to make for this class, there comes a something more valuable, thorough understanding of organic chemistry.
Here's some of the things I recommend to do in order to pass his class with a good grade. 1)Read the textbook ahead of time. 2)Do the homework ahead of time so you can ask questions. 3)Do not miss class, answer all the in class questions (this will help you a lot) 4)Study with a group, and do homework together. 5)Rewatch his classes. Good luck!
I honestly think he's posting his own reviews on here. Hes a horrible professor. I passed but I would never ever in a million years recommend him. How he is still employed is a mystery. The only way I passed is to ignore the book and learn the salvador way. The knowledge is useless. Wipe your mind clean after this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
He is a very good professor, I would recommend him to anyone who wants to LEARN. The subject it self is terrible and it will consume most of your time. However the professor really teaches, he challenges you and gives many opportunities to pass his class. You just need to try. Dr. Salvador really helped me understand chemistry, even enjoy it.
Dr. Salvador was amazing. This was my 2nd attempt at organic chemistry, so I'm able to give an accurate comparison. I learned so much from him. I was completely lost during my last attempt, but now I really feel like I have a real grasp of this class. He gives online homework assignments due at midnight every Tue Thu & Sat, but it helps a lot.
I took him for o-chem 1 and o chem II and I didn't learn diddly squat from him. It's a joke, they're maybe a handful (5 or so) that will be able to keep up with him the whole semester. Otherwise, you're lost. Also, don't bother using the book it's useless. HW's CONSUME so much time. Exam averages are 30-50%.. Tell me if that reflects learning.
Half my class failed. It says there that the avg grade is an a. Its NOT. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. you will fail if you have a job, family, or other classes. Inconsiderate. There's way too much work. You won't learn much. Nothing he said sticks. Read a book and actually learn instead of wasting your time with this guy
I think this class overall is not easy, you really need to take some time to study. Exam averages are 30-60's and due to this he does give 1-4 extra point credits each class by giving quiz quetions through an online site. Homeworks are online too and are due each T, TR and Sat. Dr. Salvador is intelligent, respectful and at times funny, but hard.
Many people might not like his teaching method but l I think he's a good teacher. Tests are difficult and require you to look at everything with careful detail but he does offer many opportunities for extra credit and homework grade plays a big part of the overall grade giving u a better chance (or odds) to pass.
I fail him as a professor. I did not learn from lectures and the homework program is very frustrating. This class alone has discouraged me from ever pursuing a career in Chemistry and has made me regret my choice of major. I do not understand why he has "good" ratings. Class averages on exams range in the 30s. A reflection of his teaching ability.
Worst class ever!! Organic chem always is gonna be hard but this profesor makes it even harder. Hard to understand, almost non extra credit (class questions 7:30am), no curve. The higher average group was 45. The homework takes a lot of time and it is every other day. The book that he gives skips a lot of steps so it makes it even more confused!!
Tough class but you have to put the time and effort to succeed. Form a study group it helps a lot. re watch his lectures redo notes stay on top of his homeworks and answer his extra credit problems and you'll do alright. The people who complain about him probably dont work hard for this class and just ask for the answers
This professor knows his material very well however, he lacks the ability to explain what he wants his students to understand. When not one student can receive a 90 on an in-class exam there is a problem. When the class average is 33%, there is a problem.
Best professor I've taken in my college career. Dr. Salvador is very helpful in his office hours and helps you a lot with problems. There is a lot of homework, and extra credit but this actually helps you do so well in the class if you fail the tests. I recommend him for the full year of organic chemistry.
This class is very hard but the professor gave a lot of extra credit
He is a good teacher but I feel I needed more help outside of class.
Great Ochem professor, he made a program that allows you to create the different structures, this is also part of the HW and in class questions. Helps you if you go into his office hours. There are 4 exams, lowest gets dropped and the ACS exam. Only downfall to Salvador is he not only makes you take Exam 4 but also ACS in one day, ACS is 1st :(!!!
Organic Chemistry is a hard course but I think Salvador really helped me stay on track. He was always willing to help if you went by his office and he drops your lowest test grade. There's a lot of homework but it was a little helpful for the tests.
Salvador is the best o chem professor ever! He explains everything, he even tries to make class funny and makes jokes. Yes, his test are the hardest things you'll ever encounter, perhaps harder than the real Mcat, but he lets you re take them and gives you a lot of opportunities to do extra credit!! He is THE BEST. we love you! O chem 2015 1st part
It is a lot of material to cover in class. He tries to explain everything, it's not clear due to the few time to dedicate to each chapter. Exams are very hard. He would put practice test which are very easy compared to the actual test. And the homework takes a lot of time and is not really related to the tests. He does not curve, test avg. 60.
His quizzes are NOT based off the textbook, PowerPoint or anything relatively similar. He doesn't help his student's and when asked for help, references 'Google'. Did not learn anything from his lab and all questions given to him were a dead end. Would not recommend him as a lab professor.
He is the worst, expects everyone to know what happens during an experiment before actually before doing it. This would be your worst nightmare especially when he assigns pre-lab test. Do not take him for laboratory. DO NOT DO IT!!!!!!
Professor Salvador is an excellent professor. Ochem is not an easy class, you have to work hard to get an A. The exam averages are always lower than 75 but he assigns the exams as homework so you are able to get together with your friends and then he averages both grades. There is a lot of extra credit, take advantage of it and you will be fine.
Dr. Sal is a wonderful educator. He does an outstanding job of using electronic media and online software to help visualize concepts that would otherwise be very complicated to express. If you own a laptop or smart phone and need to learn the mechanics of organic chemistry I would recommend Dr. Salvador.
if you have outside commitmentsother classes, dont take this class in the summer. the homework takes a ridiculous amount of time and if you take the lab also there is no time for familyworksleephappiness. i totally regret taking this class over the summer and especially w this micromanaging control freak professor. the homework is the worst
You will not do well in this course if you do not complete the homework assignments and skip class. He gives many extra credit opportunities by answering the survey questions. The exams are hard, but he averages the in class score and the retake homework. This is not an easy class and should not be taken lightly. All in all, a good teacher.
It is not an easy class. surprisingly i did very well in o-chem 1 with dr. salvador, so i decided to take him again for o-chem 2. it has been the most difficult class i've ever take and he is not very helpful because he goes way too fast during class. however he gives ridiculous amounts of extra credit i truly appreciate.
Took this class over the summer and it's very rough. I would not recommend it unless you're work on this class full-time (40+ hours /week). The exams are extremely tough, and the homework is very tedious but does not translate to the exam content. The lectures do a very good job of preparing you for exams, do NOT miss them.
This teacher is excellent, he gives you clear expectations of this class and really tries to help as much during and after class. He is aware this is a difficult class and provides a lot of opportunity to obtain extra credit. You will need to dedicate time to do homework.
He's a great professor overall! My piece of advice go to every class, get 100's in all the homework, take the extra credit seriously, and form a group to study and for the retake exams.
The most useful aspect by which needs to be addressed is the importance of understanding Dr. Salvador's way of teaching. He speaks in a manner where the students can comprehend the lecture as easy as they can and also expects his students to do homework, practice tests, and extra credit. These are the main fundamentals of success in his classroom.
When driving to school in the morning to get to ochem 2 I never wear my seat belt because, I rather die than be in his class. This class it is very difficult you are going to fail all the exams but, don't be disappointed everybody does. Try to get 100 in all the homework and, go everyday to class for the class response.
Exams are tough, but hearing his lectures and taking the re take seriously will help you a lot. He gives a lot of in class extra credit, so the only way you'll do well in class is if you go and do it.
I loved this class! I am already a Biochemistry major, so chemistry is my forte. He is really helpful whenever I couldn't figure out a homework he would help me out. He has office ours but if caught him just in his office he won't turn you away. He can be tough because it is a lot to know, but he also gives lots of extra credit, which is IN CLASS!
It's the hardest class I've ever taken. However, he gives A LOT of extra credit and allows test retakes that are averaged down with the original score. Do your best on the hw, 20% of grade and can be taken as much as you want before the due dates. He's a very nice person. Going to his office hours was helpful when I couldn't do the hw.
Easy class if you do extra credit and homework. Tests are hard but he lets you take a retake and averages the two scores. Tests are based only on what he covers in lectures. If you have any questions, you can ask him. He helps you with homework and teaches you if you go to office hours. You use a free e-book for class.
AMAZING professor. Dr. Salvador is so helpful if you go to his office, he will literally sit down and answer ALL of your questions in detail if you have them. I'd do my homework outside of his office on my surface tablet and he'd help whenever I needed it. By no means is this class easy, but it's not hard either; it just requires hard work.
He streams his lectures live if you cant make it to class and gives extra credit during lecture BUT learned absolutely nothing with him as a teacher. The homeworks are done online on the program that is tough to understand and do not help with the tests what so ever. Take him for ochem 1 but absolutely not for ochem 2!
Worse professor I've ever had at UTEP. Homework due every day of class and saturdays. As well as moodles. This would be great if the homework had anything to with the exams but it literally has nothing to do with it. Just read the book, study on your own and watch youtube videos. He doesn't define anything, he assumes you know everything.
This isn't a class where you just memorize a couple things on the homework like the students below were hoping for. It is important that you understand EVERYTHING about the homework assignments. His exams are made new every semester, with the purpose of making the student think critically. He is extremely helpful in office hours. Great class/man.
This class is very difficult if you do not go to class you will not pass. There are many extra credit opportunities (HW, moodle, clickers) however, that is only because his tests are too hard. Even if trying all the extra credit one must still do good in the tests or will not pass. Would not take again because homework is no where close to exams.
Dr. Salvador's class is very strict to the routine. If you didn't take him for 2324, it will be much harder for you to navigate the hmwk on his website. His homework assignments become harder, and some require an entire day to complete. He may give extensions on the hmwk, you never know. But its not fair for those who work all day to finish on time
This class is hard, yes. But we have every resource possible to get a good grade on it. The professor is always willing to help you, the program used is really usefull as well as lecture and homeworks, not to mention tons of extra credit. Expect hard work if you want a good grade. Sorry lazy people.
Dr. Salvador knows his stuff. He is very helpful. If you need help with homework or any concept, you should go to his office hours; he literally does your homework for you and explains anything you have questions on. His tests are hard. If you don't study or fully know the material, you won't pass the tests. Make sure to do every extra credit
The worst teacher I have taken while attending college. His exams are nothing really like the homework and you are left guessing about where you stand academically in his class because you do not know how much extra credit he will give till after you take your last exam and final.
In class you need something electronical to participate. My conputer crashed this semester, I would get logged out using my phone at times, I had to check out a laptop at the library every other three days to use, I stayed at the library as long as I could to finish my homework. Worst semester for me! I missed out on a great deal EC points.
Even though I attended almost every class I had problems with my electronical devices while participating in class for extra credit. Due to problems I only have a certain amount of extra credit and he does not even use all of your extra credit. He decides based off the class average how much he will give. This semester he gave 0.4 percent of EC
He is a really knowledgeable person, but does not know how to teach my class earned 33-34% on the four exams we took for this semester. If your class is scoring 33s and 34s for the whole semester than the professor is probably not doing their part. He needs to change his method of teaching.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken BUT I can say that I really learned. The homeworks have videos that explain how to do it. He drops the lowest grade out of four exams and gives a lot of extra credit through class reponse and moodles. You do have to study for this class but you are in college and that's what you are supposed to do anyway.
I found his teaching style helpful. He records the lectures for reviewing afterward. The exams are difficult but manageable. The added homework is helpful to study the material as well as added to the overall grade which, in my case, helped round my grade to an "A."
If the purge was a real thing, the first person I would go after is Salvador. He is the worst professor you will ever have in your life. His test averages are ALWAYS 30-40% because he intentionally makes it impossible no matter how much you study. Tutors have tried to help me and told me our work was too hard and at a postgrad level. DONT DO IT.
He's a brilliant man and knows his stuff. BUT his methods of teaching do not encourage hard work. If you study hard you're likely to get the average score on a test(30-35), if you put all C's you're also likely to get a 30%. The class relies so much on the retake exam and extra credit that you really don't learn much because of that huge crutch.
He's really a genius and he's pretty funny. This is the hardest class i've ever taken. Good advice, follow his tables he puts up, don't always copy off students esspecially if you are sure of your answer, students can be wrong. You can beat the average if you study hard enough. Get 100's on the homework, take advantage of the extra credit work.
His exams are very difficult. Many of his examples in class are completely changed in the exams. Averages were in the 50's all three times. Extra credit opportunities were greatly reduced to only in class questions with correct answers and of incorrect with correct # of carbons. Try to take the course with it being the main focus or summer class.
For the first time teaching the course, Dr. Salvador made learning the disconnect approach fun and simple. Although the course material is difficult, he did his best to make sure that every student had the opportunity to get a better grade on their exam. There are in class and out of class extra credit opportunities. BEST O. CHEM PROF. AT UTEP!
The G.O.A.T. real life! Dr. J. Sal is the dopest ochem professor CNO haha!!!
Dr. Salvador is a phenomenal professor. Don't get me wrong, the material is difficult, there's tons of homework and a high likelihood of you failing all the exams. What's overlooked is that Dr. Salvador does this because he really wants you to learn ochem, which should truly be your goal too. There's extra credit, retakes and recorded lectures.
Chemistry is hard as it is and Dr Salvador doesn't make it any easier. He's really nice and all but the class is really hard and you don't really learn much. He does curve. A lot. But even that is not enough sometimes. Do all the extra credit! I wish I had actually learned instead of just depending on the curve to pass.
Love the man hes a genius and actually cares about us students (which is rare in all aspects) Getting a high grades on all the homework will help your grade ALOT. His exams are kind of difficult but he offers a retake and lots of extra credit. Would take him for all my chemistry clases if I could! Make sure you show up to class though.
This class was a challenge overall, but Dr. Salvador, does provide help and give passing opportunities.
Stay away if you're a non-chem major. Don't get me wrong, Dr. Salvador is a good professor, but if you don't have a strong chemistry background, his teaching and lectures won't help. Very unorganized lectures, hard to follow, etc. Exam averages are usually at 30-40%, extra credit is given but it doesn't give you a guarantee passing grade.
Salvador was a very nice professor and he does give you a ton of resources to learn the material he's teaching. However, his tests are way too difficult! If the exam averages are constantly in 30-40 range it's obvious that the problem is the professor, not the students. He also stopped giving as much extra credit so his class is now harder to pass.
I struggled a lot with this course; he offers a lot of extra credit but his lectures are disorganized. The exam grades were usually around 30%-40%. The exams were just way too hard, every one struggled and they weren't made any easier. Would not recommend this course if you don't need it.
Worst Class Ever.
There is a lot of curving. Homework is useless for the exams, as is the book. You have practice tests that are reliable but he doesn't provide the answer keys, so who knows if you've got the right idea or not. Bottom line - go to class, answer his questions, and really understand the lecture (he posts them online too) to get the best shot at an A.
This class was beyond frustrating. I took it in the summer which is already difficult and he just does anything he can to make it harder. The average for all exams was around 30% and everyone just hoped the curve would help them pass. homework takes so long you dont even have time to do the extra credit.
Ochem is a hard course but he makes everything easier. You have to read and do homework every week if you want to pass the class. The only way you can fail this class is by being lazy because the material is hard but nothing is impossible if you work for it, don't complain because if you fail this class is because you were super lazy
This is an honest review this class is hard so I would recommend to take it with another professor. if you take this class goodluck
Took the class as a non-credit refresher and I feel bad for anyone who had to take it for credit. Salvador loves stereochem and on tests you'll find yourself guessing which chiral center he wants even if you understand the reaction fine. I think this is one of the reasons test scores are so low. The homework program is very frustrating.
This is the hardest class I have taken in over 100 credits. This is because you will have a failing grade up to the day of the final exam and after that he will tell you what the curve is. Trust me getting an A in this class will require you to study in order to do well in the in class. however relying on the retake will not get you the A.
Disorganized lectures. Practice tests without answer keys. Homework on an annoying program that doesn't help with the exams. "Multiple choice" exams with an "other" option, so you don't get the benefit of answers being narrowed down (like in a regular multiple choice) or partial credit (like with free response). Book doesn't help much. Not good.
Reading the book is not of much help. Lectures are out of order and confusing. In class extra credit conflicts with the lecture so it may be hard to focus on either one. The exams have mistakes and the practice exams are not related to the exams that are given in class. A good grade on the homework will not forecast a good grade on the exams.
You have to study hardcore for each exam, yet somehow fail them all... but you get to take a re-test which averages with your failing exam and you also get in class extra credit question SO DO THEM. Dr. Salvador is very knowledgeable though and helps you a lot (though he makes jokes at 7:30am that are hard to laugh at when you are half asleep).
It is a real hard class if not one of the hardest classes at utep. Believe in yourself and keep the answers that you think are right because other people don't know what they are doing. I'm glad I will never have to take organic again though. Do the extra credit because that is the curve right there.
Do well on the homework & retakes. Go to class cause he offers extra credit. Use other resources like YouTube to help you. Make sure you have a good study group (this is very important). Ochem is well known for weeding out pre med students, but it is possible to get an A if you really work for it. Dont get discouraged, stay positive and good luck!
Super hard exams that have nothing to do with the lectures or the homework. He expects you to know as much as he does about OChem. The class averages are always around the 30s n yet theres still one person who is able to get a 90. Super hard class its better to take it at epcc.
This class was really tough. I basically slaved myself for every test but still either failed them or barely passed. GO TO CLASS. His extra credit is what saves you in the end. It bumped me up two letter grades. I really enjoyed this class though, it is very challenging but an A is very possible. Find a good study group! Also, homework is a pain!
He sometimes will give questions and still keep on to another thing in class. He is amazing when it comes to the care for his students. He doesnt just add extra credit to all who need it but to everyone. It is a hard subject but he makes it fun and he helps each person. He also helps you understand things when you go to his office hours.
Hardest class ever only 7% got As plus his grading is so stupid because it relies all on the Extra credit and the those require mastering his stupid system that he uses and also the capability to learn at OCHEM at the very moment. By that I mean he teaches for like 20 and asks a question that is relatively difficult for you to draw on his system.
So I honestly thought I was going to fail I got a 20 on the final but what saved me was the retakes the homework and the extra credit best advice I can give IS GO TO CLASS also find a great study group and score 80 and above on the homework I got a B at the end an A is possible just be ready to truly commit. Salvador isn't as bad as they say :)
I can't understand why he gives extra credit WHILE LECTURING. You can't concentrate on both! I noticed a lot of reviews saying "find a good study group". To me that means "the teacher is bad, you'll learn better from your fellow students." which is very true. I dropped the class and plan to take it with a better teacher in the fall.
Took it once and got a D the first time. The second time was in the summer and it was bit more do able, since there was a group of homeworks that count at extra credit. The whole class runs on those extra credit questions he gives. I was failing with a low D and the extra credit gave me a low B. Focus on the retakes at home to boost your grade.
While I only had Dr. Salvador for the lab, his enthusiasm for the subject and for teaching is evident. He really cares about students and wants them to succeed. He is always available to help should you need it, and really goes above and beyond in that regard. That does not mean he is an easy grader, but if you put in the work, you'll do well.
Organic chemistry is difficult but Dr. Salvador makes it easier to deal with IF you work for it. His lectures are basically a bunch of examples of certain topics. However, his tests are extremely challenging so study a lot! After the exam, you take it home and solve it. He averages the take home and in-class exam and gives extra credit in class.
The programming component of this course can be difficult for those who aren't especially computer savvy, but Dr Salvador breaks it down in a way that is easy for students to understand, and he's always available to help if you're struggling. Definitely recommend
Dr, Salvador treats Organic chemistry as if it was biochem and by the end of his class goes into bio names for many compounds which, as a non-bio chemistry person, I was not aware of. This means I had to teach myself these terms (which I will never use again) to understand the tests. He's a bio teacher that pretends to teach o-chem.
No clue what to say anymore guys. Salvador is just amazing and clear. Strongly recommended Salvador Ochem 2 at UTEP
Never have I encountered a voice that could put me to sleep faster. However, do yourself the favor and go to class for the extra credit. Salvador is a nice guy and is willing to help if you are willing to put in the work. Get a good study group and make sure to get 100s on all the homeworks and retakes. Best choice for ochem at utep in my opinion.
O Chem isn't easy, but if you're willing to work for it you can get an A, Salvador is a good professor but you have to work hard. Go to class, get 100s on all the homework and do the extra credit.
Very caring professor, he cares about his students and make O-Chem as simple as it could possibly be. He does have difficult exams but if the class average is low enough (which it always is) you get to retake it and average both grades. Do ALL his homework's and never miss class because you lose extra credit opportunities. Would take him again.
The best O Chem professor ever. Professor Salvador cares so much for his students, & makes O Chem as simple as possible. Attend lecture everyday, & study everyday. Not an easy A by any means but very possible!
Easiest class. Almost all the class performed poorly. I expected it more difficult, don't believe all the students who want to pass with just retakes and extra credit. if you are an excellent student at least get an A+
Dr. Salvador makes his class extremely difficult however if you are willing to work for it you can get an A, go to class do the extra credit and get 100s on all your homeworks.
Wonderful as a person and professor. Pay attention in class, while not mandatory it is best if you attend. If you have q's he is always there for you. The way he arranged the class, the homework and exams is to help you pass, just do them. He cares, you will learn. If you don't care about chem, take another professor.
Dr. Salvador's knowledge doesnt translate well into his teaching style which is rather directionless at times. Lectures are hard to follow and necessitate some level of self-teaching to do well in the class . Homework is tedious (but is balanced by the option for unlimited retakes until the due date) Exams are difficult but corrections are allowed
I think everyone complains too much about this class only because they refuse to learn. The students had group chats and every day they would complain about him instead of sitting there and trying to learn. IF many people just sit there and listened and tried you could get it and get a good grade. He cares and is a good teacher for a hard subject.
Avoid taking this teacher. He gives extra credit and once you have accumulated what you think is a great amount of points, at the end he will count maybe 1 point. Very repetitive and doesnt seem to know how to teach ochem that well. He does re takes on his exams but doesnt let you know what questions you missed so most likely youll score lower.
for this class is the matter of if you understand the concept or not, the lectures were pretty vague but the homework helps a little bit, extra credit is offered but take advantage of it. careful who you study with because most students will work hard to pass but a few will only ask for answers, get 100 on homework and do extra credit and you pass
If you just want to pass, it is possible with a lot of effort. However, if you are a straight A student, you will get your first B. Don't bother of doing hundreds of questions for extra credit, at the final it will not help. He only gives extra credit if the class fail. It is better fail and receive the extra credit otherwise you will stuck on B.
You will hear many things about this professor, but not many of them are true. He is caring, and only gives you the grade you earned. Everything you need to get an A is in his lectures, even if you don't think it's important, WRITE IT DOWN. Sitting in lecture isn't enough, and the curve is a lifesaver. Do every EC assignment, they ARE worth it.
His class is tough, however he does give extra credit and extra credit homework if the exam averages are below 75.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. There was a groupchat and the people who were doing good pretended like they didn't know the material and didn't want to help. Most of the class failed because we needed help. The professor expects you to know everything already, he reviews and doesn't teach. WORST PROFESSOR AND CLASSMATES.
Professor, as a person, seems to care about his students and teaching. However, that doesnt translate into his teaching style. The lectures are very hard to follow and his handwriting is illegible at times, so just write everything down. He does offer extra credit but will, at most, be 1 point to final grade. Tests are very difficult.
If you really want to connect with Dr. Salvador, you need to have a solid chemistry background. Only about 10% of the class gets to participate and connect with Dr Salvador. If you are not a genius, try taking this class with another teacher or at EPCC. Dr Salvador is intelligent and professional, but this does not translate into his teaching.
At the end of the semester, 90% of the class will fail. However, Dr. Salvador curves until the class average are 75. Don't trust the EC, sometimes the factor is 0.024, or sometimes it is 1.16. For some to be able to get A others must get D. This system only benefits a small minority like me, the more they fail, the more EC there will be.
Cool guy, he's very compassionate about his studies.
Labs arent too hard just as long as you pay attention and do what you are asked you should be fine
Extremely HARD exams, he creates his own exams .
The lab is very interesting and I learned a lot but the lab reports are very hard and long, I would suggest paying attention to the presentation at the beginning of the lab to have an idea of how to answers the report questions.
He's a very knowledgable professor, but he does give tough assignments to make sure you understand the material or laboratories.
Professor James Salvador is kind-hearted but he gives a lot of homework. He created the website that he uses for all of the homework and it's very difficult to use there are like 10 assignments due at the end of the week but you have to complete each assignment multiple times in order to pass he doesn't tell you why its wrong leaves you guessing
He is the best professor! he wants you to understand and to learn all the material. he has office hours, and you can always pop in. He answers very quickly, and he is always willing to help you.
Dr. Salvador is personally in the lab with you to guide you in the experiment. Eileni is a great TA, very nice. The lab is long but usually less than 6 hours. There are Quizlets for the pre labs and the post labs. Make sure to pay attention to the small details he mentions in lab, they will come up again. He offers a ton of extra credit.
Really enjoyed the class. If you go to class, he offers extra credit. If you dont go to class, he records the lectures on his website that he coded himself. Study the lectures and homeworks for exams. At the end of class there is a massive curve based on class response extra credit. He posts past exams and helpful tables on his website to study.
is fair and gives a lot of chances to improve overall grade.
took the time to go over problems that the majority of the class struggled on, no surprises on the exams, lots of extra credit
no written reports, assignments were clear and all questions related to content discussed in class, i was very worried about being penalized for poor results or lab performance but dr. salvador was very understanding about our inexperience in using the lab equipment, i learned a lot and got more confident with my coordination towards the end
cares about his students. if you do your part you will pass-- he offers many resources so that you are successful. gives common uses for the compounds in class and tells anecdotes to keep students engaged. I will miss this class.
Dr. Salvador is the best professor I have taken at UTEP. I would never take organic chemistry with anyone else. Do mock exams, go to class, and work with your classmates, and you'll do excellent and learn a lot :)
Took Dr. Salvador for Organic Chemistry 2 Lab for Chemistry majors. Do not forget to do the pre-labs and post-labs they are due on Mondays. Take pictures of the pre-lab presentation slides, they really help with the theory questions. Dont skip lab and pay attention and youll learn a lot
Took CHEM-2222. There is a lot of extra credit and the quizzes are take-home so the knowledge you gain from the course will depend on your curiosity and desire to learn. No written reports.
Challenging but rewarding class. Engage with the resources - mock exams, study sessions, and tools like unstuck AI - to excel. Hands-on lab work is insightful but reports require diligence.
If you want to learn Chemistry you take Dr. Salvador. You get the grade you earn, he does not curve at all. If your grade is 69.9999999 he will not bump it to 70. So don't ask. Some people think he is tough but learning a tough subject is tough.
Dr. Salvador is one of the most passionate professors that are involved in the lab courses. He teaches both lab sections for both Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II for majors.Throughout the semester he was more than willing to help us out if we ever had any questions, mentioned fun facts, and kept us safe while working in the lab.
Class was hard, but less because Salvador is a bad prof and more because of the content itself (O-Chem is notorious for being a difficult class). He gives lots of opportunities to succeed in his course, from generous amounts of extra credit, to access to ALL of his previous exams to study with. Only real caveat is his homework can get tedious.
This is the hardest class I've taken and I would not have gotten the grade I did without going to every lecture and taking advantage of the extra credit. You can tell Dr. Salvador wants his students to pass, and it is through both his kindness and my hard work that I had a successful experience. Do not wait until the last moment to do the homework.
Very nice guy clearly wants his students to pass his class and offers lots of extra credit. Homework can be tedious but get it done and focus on the exams (which are all curved). I went from a B to A+ just bc of his generous extra credit. His lecture aren't very good though, I dont really learn anything for him personally. I used outside sources.
I took this class in summer, bad decision. There are many extra credit assignments with tons of homework through a browser application that is not on BB. Although it may seem very cool to use the application, your time will be consumed by it (its also very old). Make sure to show up to class everyday for the EC he offers in class. He is very nice!
this is the hardest class I have ever taken, I had to put a lot of time into this class but it paid off. if you put in the time, study hard, go to lecture, and do all of the assignments, you'll be okay. he curves all of the exams and gives a lot of extra credit. this is a very hard class, especially over the summer, but he is my favorite professor.
