the man, 'nuff said.
Expects you to know a lot of information, but will help you though it... Great guy, great professor. HIGHLY recommended for Civil Procedure
Has high expectations of his students and makes no apologies for it. Come to class well-prepared and you'll earn his respect... and you will learn more than in any other class you're taking at the time. If you're a motivated student, you'll love it. If you're looking to take it easy and skim through, stay far, far away (and leave us the seats)
He is a great person, great professor, golden to the core. Requires preparedness and attentiveness, but this is the way you learn the best. He wants his students to be challenged and delivers, best way to learn Civil procedure for sure. Great advice outside of the classroom, compassionate & VERY inspiring! Blessed to have had him! Not for slackers!
AMAZING professor and person. Class is challenging and he expects a lot from you, but this is a good thing b/c you WILL learn the material inside and out. He comes off like he will ream you a new one if you are not prepared in class, but he is doing it for your benefit. He really cares about his students and will go the extra mile to help them.
By far the best Professor I had as a 1L. He is demanding, but fair. If he calls on you repeatedly, do not be offended - he calls on you because he knows you either know the material or can work through it when the class is stuck. He is ALWAYS available outside of class. I envy his vocabulary. Prof Sample cares about every single student.
Professor Sample is, by far, my favorite professor at Hofstra Law. He is a brilliant, caring and wonderful professor. His best quality is that he respects each and every student that has chosen this career path, and knows how difficult it is. Highly recommended!
Scripted, yet rambling lectures -- actually prides himself in not being particularly comprehensible. He goes off on how supplements won't help you on the exam, but they're necessary in order to make the course manageable (as opposed to trying to study the convoluted maw of his lectures).
Hands down the best professor I have had. Commit to really learning the material and putting forth the effort and his classes are awesome. He cares about getting to know his students and goes out his way with efforts to help them. Yes. His classes are hard and the material is difficult. Doesn?t matter. Take them. They are absolutely worth it.
So great. Demands a lot, but it's really in your best interest to rise to the level of his teaching. Very helpful and caring, but also has a stern side. Don't ever be unprepared for class and you'll be fine.
Best Professor Ever
Absolutely love this man. He is the BEST professor I have ever had. Demands a lot and sets the bar very high but helps you reach his expectations and your own potential. Knows so much about the subject and makes the material interesting and comprehensible. If you get the chance to take him, DO IT! You won't regret it.
great guy, great teacher, but demands alot! I disconnected the internet from my computer during his class because he demands full attention, in work and in class
BEST PROFESSOR AT HOFSTRA. He loves his students and will do anything for them. He is challenging and pushes students to a level that they did not know they could reach. He is difficult but you will appreciate his level of intelligence.
Sample is by far the best professor at Hofstra. This was one of his first undergrad classes and I learned so much and actually enjoyed this class. Plus the trip to the city was fun! Highly recommend him to everyone, unless you don't want to do the reading and then this class probably wont be enjoyable. Cant wait to take another class with him
motivated by mutual fear and respect? Hope so. I saw grown men tear up after getting their nongraded midterm grade back. When Sample was disappointed w the class and laying into an unprepared person, I felt like my parents were getting divorced all over again. He will make every one of you look a fool at least once, just accept its inevitable.
He is an amazing professor. The class is a lot of work and a lot of reading, but learning from him was one of my best experiences. He really cares about his students and while he may seem scary at first, he is a really sweet professor.
Overview: This professor will provide the Paper Chase experience in your law school career. His class is very difficult. He will push you very hard. He will yell at the class. You should never be unprepared. Nevertheless, he has likable personality. You will learn something by the end. Socratic Method: Daily use. High difficulty. No passes.
You're lucky if you have Professor Sample- hands down the best professor at Hofstra! He cares about every single one of his students. If you're willing to do the work and learn, having him will be one your best experiences at Hofstra.
Sample was my favorite teacher I had last semester. He is such an intelligent man and cares a great deal for both the course and his students. Would take that class 1000 times over. Absolutely loved him and that class!
Be prepared. Intense cold calling. Humiliation tactics. Don't be absent, he will notice. Make it through the class, because the exam isn't that hard (got an A and B+ in Civ Pro I&II). Brush off the hard days, don't worry about the show offs. For some reason the majority of the student body is in love with this Professor, and I am not sure why.
Had Professor Sample for Civ. Pro I, II as a 1L. He is a phenomenal professor who who is more than willing to go the extra mile for his students. His lectures are engaging and help you when learning and studying your other course work as well. He is always available for help and wants you succeed in life more so than anything else.
Sample is the greatest professor I've had thus far at Hofstra. I have planned out my law school class schedule in order to include taking all the other classes he teaches. He cares about his students. His class is hard. You're in law school, if you didn't want to work hard you shouldn't have applied. Take him and it'll be the best decision you make
I had him for Administrative Law class. He is a fair grader. If you are on his good side, you'll enjoy the class. If he doesn't know or like you, then you are SOL. He cold calls and he is brutal at it. READ READ READ.
Prof Sample is one of the most outstanding professor's of my academic career. However, he is by far one of the most challenging. I am lucky to have taken administrative law with him. You will get embarrassed at least once in the semester. It sucks, but you will probably deserve it. Come back prepared next class and he will respect you.
One of the best professors I've ever had, and the most work I've ever put into a class. The effort that you need to put in to succeed in a class like his makes you a better overall student and will help you succeed in other classes. Intense cold calls, voluntary participation highly recommended for a number of reasons.
Fall/15. An amazing lecturer. Extremely engaging, and smart as a whip. You will not get bored. Also, I have great respect for him too. As a republican, and he as a liberal, he kept an open mind, and did not attempt to oppress my views and bash my grade. Great guy, true humanitarian. We need more people in the world like him. An honor to know him.
If afforded the opportunity to learn from him, as a 1L, 2L or 3L, you are extremely fortunate. Being able to take classes with him have been defining moments and highlights of my law school career. His classes are not cake-walks -which is done by design- to ensure that as students you learn, and as professionals you will be prepared to be lawyers.
Yeah, he works you VERY hard, but you learn. Cares more about his students than any professor I've had in my life. His passion and personality are infectious. Never had a more real professor either, one whose heart is pure gold, and intentions are always good. Take his class, and you'll not only learn a ton on the subject, but about life as well.
He's a great professor, truly cares about the educational experience of his students for both purposes of learning the material and preparation for the bar exam. You will work just as hard as any 4 credit class and if you've never had him you'll be nervous because he cold calls like a mad man but the benefits truly outweigh these small burdens.
His heart is certainly in the right place and he wants each of his students to be successful in every respect. However, I don't agree with his embarrassment/ scare tactics during Socratic lectures. It probably helps in the long run though, so one day I may be knocking on his office door to thank him! Overall decent professor but be on your toes
Is he tough? Yes. Does he have high expectations? Absolutely. The learning environment he facilitates is meant to prepare you to be a lawyer. If you can't handle it or think it's a "scare tactic," you're either 1) not prepared for class, or 2) probably pursuing the wrong career. Buy in to the philosophy, and you'll be a better person/student/lawyer
Coming into Hofstra Law he was the professor you "heard" about. Not because he was "scary" or "intimidating" but because of how passionate he is about the law and his love for the student body. Yes, you must come prepared... however, this is law school people. Read, participate, and be driven to learn and you should be just fine.
Do the reading and participate, don't take this class too seriously or let it monopolize your time. Just ride the curve and you'll be fine. I wish we learnt things that are going to be on the bar instead of playing mind games the whole semester.
A great professor who all students should be honored to be able to have. He is energetic, intense and knows how to engage his students. You must come prepared, and he will expect that you are, and if this is a problem for you, then don't come to law school. I never had a professor who was so energetic and cared so much in my educational career.
One of the few professors at Hofstra who makes extensive use of the Socratic method to present a meaningfully challenging course. Divisiveness varies depending on election year, professionalism of student body, Mercury being in retrograde, etc. Ultimately a worthwhile investment of time and effort for any student at Hofstra Law.
Too harsh for no reason.
He is truly one of a kind. If you ever have a chance to take his class, do it! He care about students, he walk that extra mile, and he does so genuinely. He reminds his students through out the semester to keep pushing, and to work hard. He keeps it real inside as well as outside of the classroom. Hofstra is lucky to have him, students are too!
Such a gem.
Professor Sample is very knowledgeable and tries his hardest to make really dense material digestable. He makes you work for a good grade by using the socratic method often. But besides that and most importantly, he cares IMMENSELY about his students and wants us to think strategically, not just memorize black letter law. He's a real gem.
Are you taking a "Sample" class? If yes, you're one of the lucky few who get to endure and overcome one of the greatest experiences of your educational career. Prof Sample is tough, but the best and a lot of fun. He's knowledgeable, more than most, and he has high expectations. Which is great because hard work in his class prepares you for reality.
Sincerely cares about his students though it may not seem like it when he "picks" on you. Those that dislike him fail to see the point of his "tough" Socratic method style. While it really challenges you to think on the spot and deal with tons of pressure, you are forced to read, analyze & think like a lawyer. The results are undoubtedly rewarding
Excellent Professor and one of my favorite law school classes. I did not get my best grade in law school from him by any means but I enjoyed every single one of his classes and really learned Constitutional Law. I highly recommend you take him and PAY ATTENTION, it's worth the effort! ;
Love this professor! One of my favorite professors. Made Con Law so enjoyable! You will never get bored nor get sleepy in his class. Get ready to answer his questions. Reading the cases is a must! Id rather skip his class than walking in knowing I didn't do the reading. Final is tough, but if you study hard and take good notes you will be fine!
Fundamentally sound but physically worn out. Can shoot the J but not much post presence.
He is the only professor I have liked. The content is very hard and there is so much reading. The most reading I have ever done before for a class and he goes really in depth during class sessions. He cold calls on everyone randomly for very detailed answers. You will do great and love this Professor only if you do the readings and pay attention.
Professor Sample is so tough!!!!!!! You need to read the reading inside and out he will go so in depth and will get mad if you don't know the answer. He cold-calls and expects you to know information! If you pay attention to him, do the readings, carefully listen to his interpretation of the cases and the rules he provides you will do great!
Best ever. Had him for civ pro and con law.
I love this man. If you don't, chances are you're a cry-baby that isn't ready for the challenges of law school. Yes, you have to read. It's not undergrad anymore. Prof Sample cares so much about the law and his students and it shows in his classes. He's amazing and you're very lucky if you get him.
Sample is the BEST! Had for civpro and conlaw I & can not say enough about him - he is so caring. As long as he sees you are trying that's what matters. He will do anything for his students and this is law school so he expects a lot but SO WORTH IT! Don't be intimidated, he does give a lot of reading and loves the socratic method but still my fave
Professor Sample is by far the BEST professor I've ever had. He is definitely tough, but it's only because he truly cares and wants his students to be the best lawyers they can be. Make sure you do ALL of his readings, he is BIG on cold calls. Overall an amazing Professor and will always be one of my favorites!
He is the most AMAZING law teacher that I have ever had. He gives leachures but they are never boring, his gets the class invloed and excited to learn about cases. He is very intellegent and makes class a great expreince. He is truly the best there is and his class gave me a whole new out look on law. He is not bias and tells it like is is
Professor Sample is by far the best professor at Hofstra. His final is difficult but if you practice multiple choice questions you will be fine. Any chance you get to take him you should take... you will never learn as much in any other class than you will in his!
Everyone seemed to dread this Professor, but I loved every second. He was clear, concise, and knew exactly what he expected of us. An extremely passionate educator and clearly knew what he was talking about. He was tough, but it really made you listen and prepare for his class. Learned more in his class than I did in 4 years of undergrad.
Sample is scary at first. Once you have him you appreciate how particular he can be because it helps for the final. I was someone that was FREQUENTLY called on. He wasn't rude to me when I didn't know things, and believe me you will not know things at times, but always know the facts of each case, and try to answer the best you can.
The best professors teach their passions. Prof. Sample clearly loves Fed Courts. He expertly breaks down the abstract and dense course materials into digestible knowledge. Sample challenges his students and expects their best efforts. He gives his students the same. To do well in fed cts: read 2xbefore class, participate often, & go to office hours
The worst teacher I have ever had. He plays mind games and regularly embarrasses his students. Ruined my 1L year experience.
Professor sample is a passionate, well-spoken professor who not only forms meaningful relationships with each of his students, but makes the classroom engaging and often times exciting to be part of. He expects you to do the work, which you should be, its law school. Great professor overall. #OxMyGord
Professor Sample is one of the best professors at hofstra. You will learn so much from him and he genuinely cares to build a relationship with his students. One of the best classroom dynamics I have ever experienced. Just know the facts, be prepared and dont be discouraged if you dont know the answer. Genuine effort will be rewarded.
Professor Sample is hands down the best Professor Hofstra Law has on hand. It is impossible to teach Con Law without overlapping from law into politics. Professor Samples classroom is a safe place, and all students can speak freely without reprisal because of differing political views. Professor Sample genuinely cares about all students. 10/10
Although tough James Sample is probably one of the best professors at Hofstra Law. It may seem at times he is pushing you but this is only because he believes in YOU. He will take the time on any student that wants to be there and genuinely shows an interest in growth. Any law student would be lucky to have Sample as a prof. especially 1L's.
He is honestly one of the best professors. I really made this account to rate him highly. Take his class he is the best. Do your work, get to know him and he will support you forever and he is who you want on your side. BEST OF THE BEST. Had him for 2 classes Civ pro and Con Law.
Easily the pest professor at Hofstra Law, he truly cares about his students as individuals and as future attorneys. Everything he does is for them. If given the opportunity take his classes!
Cold calls questions not in the reading & says mean things if you don't know the answer. No clarity for very difficult exam - 72 multiple choice questions and two essays. Berates, humiliates and is openly hostile to students. Lectures generally incomprehensible and meandering. Poor use of the English language. Immature. Avoid.
His cold calls instill the fear of god in you! However, they make sure you are prepared in every class. No course you take should be easy and this is definitely NOT an easy course. DO THE READINGS. SEE the BIG picture and you will be fine. Truly cares about his students.
Professor Sample really cares about his students and pushes us to engage in the material which requires more than just regurgitating case facts during a cold call. He holds a high standard for class discussions. Some may be turned off by his style but if you put in the work it will pay off. This is law school-it's not supposed to be easy!
Studying for the Bar and it is def difficult. However the 1 subject I feel confident in is Civ Pro. So thankful to Sample. His class was challenging & I was terrified of his cold calls but he knows what he is doing. He makes sure the material is engraved in U. Outside of class he is always helpful & not intimidating. Truly cares for his students.
Sample is one of the most respected professors at Hofstra for a reason. You may not vibe with his teaching style, but everything he does is to prepare you for real life. Do the reading, pay attention, and TRY. You won't be penalized for being wrong, but he'll rip you apart if you aren't prepared. I had him for Civ Pro and Con Law, would take again.
Best law professor at Hofstra. His lectures are engaging, interactive, and make you think on your feet. Makes you think analytically & challenges you to make the connections necessary to TRULY understand CivPro. His dedication to his students & passion for the law are unmatched. Always be prepared - cold calls are hard but teach you well.
Difficult, however the absolute best lecturer. Brilliant. If you read and analyze the reading, you'll do fine in class/cold calls.
Final was not a fair reflection of material learned during the semester. Professor was overly harsh on students when they did not comprehend subject matter, and would constantly yell and not allow for a productive learning experience. Definitely would not recommend.
amazing professor, he asks and expects a lot but would do anything for his students. The workload is challenging but if he can tell you are making an effort he will work with you; he's just very passionate about his students and the material. Of all my 1L course, he made the material most accessible and digestible in his lectures.
Professor Sample ensures that you know the material but also know the context of that material that influenced the law and the decisions that have shaped the modern legal system. There is a lot of reading like any other civ pro class, but if you do the reading, come to class prepared, and participate then you are doing everything he asks you to.
Best Professor at Hofstra.
Professor Sample's class will require you to do the work and pay attention but you will leave his class having learned so much about law and gain more confidence in yourself. If you do the work and make an effort, Professor Sample will do his best to ensure you understand the material.
I have never had a professor care as much about their students and their success as I have with professor Sample. He has made sure to make class a high standard learning environment solely for the benefit of his students. As long as you do what is asked of you and prepare, you will find his class to be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience
Great Professor, really cares for his students
Very good at teaching, passionate, class is interesting. Could be a great, but he becomes irate practically instantly if someone he cold calls gives even the momentary appearance of not knowing the answer to his question, even if they clearly did the reading. Clearly driven by ego; can't deal with struggling students interrupting The Sample Show.
This Professor is incredible. I have yet to meet a Professor at Hofstra Law that cares so much about his students. He is genuine and encourages class discussion, among many other things showing him to be a teacher of the highest order. Seriously--he is the best teacher I had last semester, this semester, and likely any semester.
I loved this class, truly, it inspired me to love the law. The care that Professor Sample has for his students, their success, and the law is quite possibly unmatched at Hofstra. However, I felt that the material could have been portrayed in a more straightforward way; but his teaching style challenged me to think deeply about the law and analysis.
One of the best professors I have ever had! His lectures prepare you for the real world of lawyering. He allows for fair representation on both sides of the political spectrum, regardless of his beliefs. He looks to draw out the best in each and every student. Truly loves what he does and truly wants every student to succeed. Must take his classes!
He seemed very intimidating before taking this course, but throughout the semester has shown himself to be both respectful and very passionate. Maybe because I am not interested in con law, but I personally think that lectures that were only straight letter law while ignoring current events would be so boring and am very glad he doesn't do that.
Professor Sample is one of the few educators who genuinely and passionately cares about the topic he is teaching and the success of his students. If your feelings are easily hurt by hearing relevant legal discourse that goes against your personal beliefs, that is the only reason I would NOT recommend him. It is an honor to be taught by him.
Professor Sample is one of the best professors I've had the pleasure of learning from. If you're sensitive and can't handle being challenged, come back when you've moved past the zygote level of thinking you're accustomed to. if you're ready to learn and progress, prepare to embark on a thought-provoking experience tied into contemporary events
Lectures are passionate but kind of disorganized. He told students about finals format a week before the exam. It's not a regular law school final exam students expected--too many questions within the time limit and case identification essays were very hard. The things he emphasized in class did not appear in the exam. Cold calls are very tough.
Final exam, which is the entirety of our grade, was not at all representative of what he taught in class. Professor went on endless rants during the semester instead of actually teaching us substantive law, and then expects us to magically learn new topics. It is truly a shame that students are forced to take him.
By far the best professor at this school.
He'd rather complain to students about bad reviews while he cries than take a second to self reflect. He'd constantly rant about politics or pat himself on the back instead of teach. The final exam was not what we were taught in class. He lied about what would and would not be on the exam, and tested on things we didn't learn. Don't take, bad prof
The best professor I have ever had. He puts much care into his work and his students' growth as lawyers. The class is a lot--it is a 5 credit class, but my knowledge of Civpro is better than I thought possible. He makes a lot of effort to work with students to improve themselves. This comes with a caveat--you have to put in just as much as he does.
If you want to see a man who cares about the law greatly, expects much from his students, and gives a learned view of the law, Sample is the man for you. He is a bit rough around the edges but I feel his heart is in the right spot. He does get carried away and he does expect you to read carefully. However, the class was the best thus far.
His class is definitely difficult but his exams are fair, they reward the students willing to put in the extra effort all semester and spend extra time with the material. He genuinely loves teaching and is clearly very passionate
He deepened my understanding of Marbury & Baker by providing us with their historical backgrounds, especially what was happening behind the curtains politically in each case. His use of analogies also facilitated my understanding of complex legal decisions, such as the Trojan Horse concept WRT Marshall's dilemma in deciding Marbury.
he cold calls randomly but i noticed he would cold call on those that are not paying attention so do not avoid eye contact. Me personally, I did not like his teaching style bc I would just be left confused after each class. comparing my outline with someone that took him in the past definitely helped me figure things out.
Probably the best Professor at the law school. Grade depends on the Final which is very fair. Must put the work in throughout the semester, and it is a very challenging course. Sample will help you, but you must seek him out yourself. Make sure to be prepared for class by doingthe readings, he will cold call and won't be happy if you arent prepared
On numerous occasions, he spent the entire lecture rambling about politics instead of covering class material. The final exam did not exactly reflect what he taught in class--the sparse amount of material that was even covered anyway. He has a temper and routinely makes students feel uncomfortable.
Professor Sample is one of the most caring and passionate professors I have yet to come across. Moreover, Sample is opened to adversary discussion and is opened to hear about everyone's views. He goes out of his way to help students and always created a fun, laughable, and at the same time very serious, challenging, and in depth learning experience
Both Civil Procedure and Conlaw with Professor Sample were by far the most interesting and thought-provoking courses in 1L. He really cares about his students and wants to see them do well. Unfortunately, the school did not allow us to take him again for ConLawII, and now I just sit in that class and think, "What would Sample say about this?"
Professor Sample is an outstanding professor. I had the privilege of having him as a professor for a full year, (CivPro/ConLaw) His willingness to go the extra mile for his students are unparalleled. While his cold calls can be intimidating, his methods are to ensure you genuinely understand the material. Thank you, Professor Sample, for everything
Professor Sample is amazing. This class is no joke and he can be intimidating but that is 100% what helped me understand the material. He is by far one of the best professors I have had. You definitely need to study and read every single day but he makes it digestible.
did not wear my seatbelt driving to class in hopes I'd get hit Be prepared for cold calls, read between the lines. Hardest exam ever. Curve may save you though. He gave us one hypo for the final and that is all. Try to get outlines from 2&3L's ahead of time, and utilize them they can save you.
The final exam was absolutely ZERO reflection of what you “learn”/self teach. For a professor who preaches about “fairness”, it (100% of your grade btw) did NOT show AT ALL. Used barbri and was acing the questions, just to find myself praying to get through the exam and I'm not even religious. DO NOT recommend at all… made an account just for this.
Professor Sample is the best!! He cares so much about his students and is so passionate about the course. He makes dense topics extremely digestable and is always willing to go out of his way to make sure his students fully grasp every topic. If you do what you're supposed to do as a law student, you will absolutely love his course!
I cannot take a test to save my life (working on this!); but a single exam is not an objective measure of a student's intelligence nor a professor's pedagogy. After nearly every lecture with Sample, I left excited about constitutional questions. My grade may suggest otherwise, but Sample's passion sparks lasting curiosity.
I still have nightmares about this professor. He berated students for extended periods of time during cold calls and would expect applause as he showed his random CNN clips that had absolutely nothing to do with the course material. There is no doubt that he is extremely knowledgable but the stress from his class made it hard to grasp the material
Take a deep breath, be prepared, and enjoy the ride. He's the kind of professor that will scare you at first, but over time you'll see how much he cares about your success. An excellent professor who puts his decency first.
Sample is an amazing professor and is clearly passionate about his teaching. He is tough and will cold call you, but as long as you come to class prepared then he will be respectful back to you, if you are obviously not prepared he will rip you apart as he did one student in class this semester. Funny, respected, and there for you to learn.
