Mr. Shombert is a very knowledgable professor, in large classes lacks interest.
big headed
Expect to sleep through his class; his lectures are boring
No Comments
Very Knowledgable, but lacks the ability to clearly transfer the needed information.
I thought Schombert was great! He is very knowledgeable in the fields of space flight and astronomy. His lectures are a little unorganized, but very informational.
Awful teacher. The average for the final was a 35%. Quiz questions are biased and often make no sense. Grab a pillow if you decide to go to class, but there's no point because everything is online.
he knows a lot about what he's teaching, and is a good resource. he must just work better with smaller classes (only 8 students were in mine). great if you're interested in science but don't want to go through the technical background.
Makes it easy to pass by giving a HUGE curve--in his large lectures, anyway. He's funny, but HAS NO PATIENCE FOR WHINY STUDENTS. That's sortaimportant. If you feel entitled to an A, he'll probably make fun of you. If you try to learn from him, the class will be awesome. i mean, he worked for NASA!
The least caring, least helpful prof I have ever had.
Hard to get an A but he will help you if you go in to his office hours. He is just kind of mean.
Funny guy.
That was not a hard class as what others have described. Curving is the main thing for this class, so it is guaranteed that someone can get an A in the class. Quizzes are hard and sometimes doesn't have the answer on the online notes. But overall, it is a great class. funny and informative.
I love Mr. Schombert! He was endlessly kind, helpful, and interesting. I took his classes several years ago, but he is hands down my favorite teacher ever...I wish I lived in Eugene so I could say hi to him!
This guy is the worst F'n teacher I have ever had, pathetic!
Proffessor schombert isn't qualified to teach elementary school astronomy, much less a course at U of O. He shafted me more times than any one person has ever shafted me before, I've never hated a teacher, but that was before THE SCHOMBERT came into my lif
yo only gake this class if you are really into the chemical compostion of stars. I thought this was supposed to be a cake walk, boy was i wrong. There is hard math and chemistry in this. Needless to say i wasted a pass no pass. oh and he sounds like the dry eyes guy.
Everything is on-line. The class is too much into the details of astronomy. I DO think he's qualified to teach though, and I did like his ever so dry humour.
boring, i fell asleep a lot in this class. but everything was online and he goes over most of the quiz's in class and the mid-terms arrant that hard. the short online quiz's are the only time you need to do any math at all, and he walks the class through the math.
Very interesting guy. Always has something to say in class and it never gets boring. Can be a little bit tough, but hey. What is wrong with a little bit of work. If you really enjoy Astronomy, this guy is great.
Funny guy. He smells like hotdogs.
I took his honors astronomy course, and it was the most educational science class I've ever taken. Go out of your way to take this guy, he's great!
He Rocks
Schombert truly knows the material. Very knowledgeable and conveys lecture material well. He is always willing to answer questions in class during his lecture. This class consisted of 26 online quizzes and 3 exams. Math is only on the online quizzes. Exams are difficult, but there is a fairly big curve, so you can still do well.
If you are expecting ASTR 121 to be easy, its not. It is more of a physics class with an astronomy setting to the questions. Schombert is boring but occasionally dryly funny. He is condescending when answering questions and explains the math horribly. I'd recommend something else for a science credit if that's what you need.
Bad teacher, not helpful, lots of math

Openly insults undergrads. Utilizes a confusing curve that handed more than half the class (50+) below a C on the midterm (average score was a 40). Mandatory quizzes have material that is sometimes not covered in class until AFTER quiz due date. Overall seems to have a smarmy attitude toward his class.
People who don't like his classes didn't pay any attention. He gives away the answers to the online quizzes in class, and you only need to get a 60% on his tests to get an A. Funny guy who really knows the material. His class is based on the online quizzes which are automatically graded at 12 on Sunday night, if you miss them you miss them, don't.
Great teacher, brought me into the World of Astronomy ever since I have taken his ASTR121. Challenging Online Quizzes. Long but easy exams, 100 Multiple Choice questions is all he has for you for Midterm and Finals.
Amazing professor. Took the honors college Cosmology class with him and it was everything I hoped. The tests are straightforward and directly from the notes. He is sarcastic and hilarious in class. You just have to be willing to do the work to get the grade...
James Schombert is a great teacher, and his classes are amazing. As far as any negative reviews are concerned you should really question the source. The only reason I can think of for anyone to truly hate Schombert is if they're just too slow to keep up.

Fun professor, lots of great jokes. Learned a lot. I agree with all these previous comments - you have to be quick and work hard, but it's worth it.
Awful. I'm not afraid of hard work, but this class just doesn't make sense because the answers to quizzes aren't in the lecture notes, the book, or his verbal lectures. Schombert is an ok teacher, he's really into the class, but this was ridiculous. Your grade goes down while you attempt to learn these things. Bad idea if you're not a math wiz.
This teacher is very interesting. If you like dry humor, then he is the man. If you are whiny, annoying, or argumentative, then do not take his class. If you are dedicated to work and seek out his office hours, he is exceptionally helpful. Most of the poor reviews are because of poor students who didn't do well. Welcome to college. Its hard.
Schombert is the best teacher I have ever had, hands down. His style is definitely different and his students can't expect to breeze by without lots of hard work and THINKING. He teaches students how to think and learn - those who prefer high school style Q & A probably shouldn't take Schombert unless ready to make a huge change.

Very difficult if you are just looking for a science requirement. You must work hard to do well in this class. The Professor was not helpful in answering my questions outside of class. He is condescending and makes you feel stupid for trying to learn his material. Homework Quizzes do NOT reflect material in lectures, notes, or textbook.
This class was the biggest disappointment. I was way excited about History of Spaceflight, and the fact that is was a freshman seminar was cool. But this class isn't really structured for freshman, it would be better for Sophomores and up. The lecture notes are online and the grade is based on a midterm, final, and term paper.
lectures completely unorganized, extremely rude and disrespectful in personal interaction, and made me feel like an idiot just for asking for help. i failed one of his tests and going in to get help he basically told me I should drop out of school, citing problems on my transcript. also made fun of me for having attended comm. college.
Great professor. Interesting lectures. Funny and witty. I suppose he can be a little condescending if you can't handle that type of stuff. Tests were difficult and made you think about the concepts instead of just repeating facts. Tests had large curves.
NO BOOK. I took a class on astrophysics with schombert, and found him to be rude and unconcerned with his students. His personal website talks about what a well educated man he is and how you should feel small due to his knowledge. He was also condescending to his students, and made painfully sarcastic remarks when they left class early.
He's got an interesting sense of humor but his lectures never seem to help with the tests nor do the readings.
Not good
Boring, Boring, Boring teacher. Beware! Not what I expected. Received a C in the Class and was so glad when it was over!
Very unhelpful when asking for help in the class. Has the idea that he is better than everyone else.
haha... this guy has the most ridiculous quizzes. Can't read the math that he writes on the board, which is crucial to know for quizzes. Class was 80 math based, not what I expected. Rude, and incorrect about many of his answers on the quizzes. don't ever be taught by this human being. being in class was a pain in the ass but you need to be there.
Awful man. NEVER sign up for a class being taught by him. Extremely contradictory and his quizes have irrelevant material in them. When you ask him for help he makes you feel incredibly stupid and will not even answer your question.
Schombert is awesome and hilarious. If you think he's condescending, you either have stupid questions or the emotional fragility of an overweight girl on her first day in high school. Suck it up. Test/quizzes are hard, but that's what a curve is for.
Not a very good professor. He acted like he didn't really care about the subject, and his tests were all over 100 questions each, and some of the questions weren't even related to Astronomy. His homework sets were ridiculous, and almost impossible to get all the questions correct. Although attendance isn't mandatory, it's necessary.
Schombert is amazing. The class is difficult so don't expect it to be easy. He knows what he is talking about. He will act like he knows more then you because he does. If you don't want a snide remark to a dumb question then either don't take the course or don't ask them.
Schombert is awesome. Don't expect to skate by in this class and receive a decent grade. His class is heavily curved, if you're willing to put in the hard work, you'll do fine. Just don't take this class if you are an entitled princess or unintelligent.
He is a really smart guy and teaches the class well. HUGE curve on everything, so just put a little effort into the quizzes and exams and you can easily pull off at least a B. He is very condescending at times, but he is hilarious as long as you don't act stupid and ask terrible questions.
Professor Schombert is an awesome guy. People will say he is rude, condescending, arrogant, and whatever else. But he is just a very smart guy who is hilarious that does not put up with stupidity. He knows the material very well and teaches it well. The giant curve makes the class very manageable. I will definitely be taking another class with him.
Pay attention in class and this course is super easy. All quiz questions are open book, and lectures are put online. The quiz answers are pulled straight from the lectures. Tests are long, but not that difficult. Plus, he's hilarious!
DO NOT I am serious, DO NOT take this class, it is literally impossible to get a good grade, or merely pass the class, Schombert does not teach and his lectures have nothing to do with the quizzes or 100 question exams that are incredibly difficult. If you want science credit, get it somewhere else, by far worst professor and hardest class.
I love Schombert. He is single handedly the greatest man and mind alive. Class is like watching Discovery Channel everyday. Do you like joke? do youlike getting your mind blown? James is your man.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever had in my life. He is so god awful at teaching he has to curve each of the exams 30% to get people to pass. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
I think Dr. Schombert does a great job teaching this class. His tests are difficult, but he grades on a curve which makes it pretty easy to pass. I like how difficult the class is, it makes me feel like I'm getting more for my money and I know that I will have a better understanding of Astronomy. He is funny and incredibly intelligent.
Only take this class if you want to fail. Tests are super hard and have nothing to do with what you read in the book, the tests are NOT open book and are 100 questions long. The grade average for the class is a D. He pretty much tells you in the beginning of the term that half the class won't pass, so there's that.
The material was hard to keep up with and the math was hard to follow. He will say it once then that's it, if you don't ask. He's really funny, but it's hard. Attendance is mandatory ONLY if you want to pass. Everything is on a curve.
Lectures are just old powerpoints and not very clear.
There are 3 extremely difficult exams, each comprised of 100 questions. You do not get to use notes. I did the recommended reading, read the lecture slides, got decent (A-B) on the online quizzes, and went to most classes. Yet I still averaged 40100 on the exams. Hardest class I've taken here at the UO. It's essential Astro Physics. I warned you!
This professor is horrible. He is stubborn and arrogant. When I approached him to talk about my testing accommodations through the university, he said he didn't know and didn't care. That is more than an attitude adjustment, it is against the law. I dropped the class and talked to the department head and reported his behaviour.
Please, never take a class with Schombert. He manages to make the most interesting subject extremely boring. He just stands at the front of class and talks for two hours, never engaging the students. The subject matter is confusing and he clearly knows quite a bit about it, but is so awful at teaching it. I have never failed a class but this one.
As long as you go to class as much as possible and keep up on the weekly quizzes from the reading (with the curve) you'll be fine.
This teacher is really arrogant. I went to his office hours to ask for guidance and he basically told me to leave. He doesn't teach the subject well enough to grasp the material he expects you to know. If you are not scientifically minded, take another class to satisfy that general ed credit!
The tests are hard and don't pay for study blue to help you with the quizzes that are online.
The worst and most boring teacher I have ever had in my life. I engaged with him twice throughout the term and both times he kind of just shrugged me off. The whole class he paces back and forth with his hands behind his back reading the lecture off the big screen. If there was a stereotypical "I know everything and you don't" professor it'd be him
If you think this is going to be an easy class, you shouldn't take it. The class was very interesting to me and I did well in it because I paid attention in class, studied, and put in a good amount of effort. Every class is a lecture but he knows the subject well enough to just talk about it. Difficult class but worth it if you like science
He doesn't let you know when big exams are and I missed the final because he didn't tell us it wouldn't be on the finals schedule. It was before finals and I didn't know because the dates were online on his stupid website. Also the fact he has to curve the exams 40% shows the students don't know anything from his teaching.
this teacher is such a jerk, he uses his own rating system for class and accuses every student of cheating if they do well on all of the online quizzes. he uses an outside website and only reads from the website when in class, so prepare to get very bored and space out. after taking the test he gives you a placement number in his class.
This professor makes class unreasonably difficult. His tests are 100 questions long, but he only gives 50 minutes to accomplish them, which is obviously not enough time to think critically about the questions at all. He also starts the tests 30 mins before class starts, which is unfair to students with class beforehand. Gives ZERO test prep.
His tests are absolutely insane, and he gave NO information about what would be on the tests prior to taking them. His lecture slides are incredibly dense, and it's literally impossible to memorize everything he expects you to know for the test. In my class a D curved to an A, which shows just how little help or guidance he extends to students.
The fact that his class is graded so heavily speaks to how difficult the class is. He has 100 question tests that are supposed to be finished in 50 minutes. This only gave me 30 seconds per question, which isn't enough to actually think critically about what the answer is. Also starts the tests at different times than class.
This professor is quite literally the worst, he has a reputation at the university for being difficult. He doesn't care about students and will not even give you the time of day if you ask him. I appreciate his honesty but his lack of care for his students is astounding.
Understood the lectures, but the quizzes and tests were extremely hard and most of the lecture slides had nothing to do with the quizzes. My mother, who is a college instructor, even she said the class is not worth the money to take and we are quite literally set up to fail. Hes a nice guy and very funny, but the tests are hard to pass.
Hes probably the worst teacher on campus. Went to his office hours first week for him to explain a concept to me and he basically dismissed me as if I was an inferior wasting his time. NEVER TAKE A CLASS HE TEACHES
I have never been more frustrated with a professor in my life. This class is set up to have people fail. This teacher doesnt care about his students and every interaction ive had with him he has almost dismissed me and made me feel like my questions were not important.
I hate this professor. I took ASTR 123 my freshman year and he stressed me out so much. This class was useless because he just read the content of his website and then handed us 100 question tests 3x throughout the term. Also had quizzes every week, just about the reading (which was just stuff that he would read to us from his website in class.
I did not like this professor or his class at all. He is late most classes, just reads off lecture slide, doesn't take the time to talk to students, and when you do reach out, he is rude and belittling. Would not recommend to any students looking for an easy A or an interesting prof.
This is the WORST class and professor I have ever with in all my years of education. Rude, stubborn, and arrogant don't even begin to explain his attitude any time you approach him personally to ask a question. He refuses to use Canvas, a system which I PAY for through my tuition. He consistently tests on content that is much too difficult fr a 100
His online course is ridiculous. He says any edition of the book works, but we must check the lec. and topic line up (when we won't know what the topic is). His tests are barely relevant to the material and he won't use Canvas. His lectures are 10 min and extremely vague. Resources are not clear on what to use them for or when they are needed.
Worst person ever. In all my years of school I have never had a professor who hated teaching. Doesn't actually go over what is on his lectures. Doesn't use canvas probably because he thinks it is beneath him. RATES his students after the first exam so that if you are the worst in the class you will know it. Very arrogant. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS- seriously, this is by far the worst class I have ever taken. I am a straight-A student but this class is set up to ensure you fail. The quizzes contain math he never talks about, the tests are unreasonably hard- I have failed every single test like every other student yet he has to curve it 40% so some students will pass.
The 100 question exams are impossible to study for as you are just thrown random information at you and there is no way to memorize it all. I scored a 47, 52, and 50 on each exam and got a B in the class because I found the answers for the quizzes and it was curved so hard. There is no point in showing up. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
The dude cant even respond to an email without being snarky and rude. Dont put yourself through this. Id give him a zero if I could.
This professor is obviously a highly intelligent person, but his intellect does not translate into teaching ability. Instead, Dr. Schombert airs on the side of expecting students taking an introductory level astronomy class to dedicate themselves to his material, regardless of its relevancy to any other aspect of life or study.
This teacher is amazing. I currently have an A in the class and even if my grade drops by that time I am still confident in saying he is one of the best teachers I've had. The material is challenging and invaluable to any individual who takes science seriously. I've spent more time on the material in his class than I have in any other class. 10/10.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. I went into this course interested in learning about space. The teacher gives out the hardest exams I have ever seen and I HIGHLY recommend to never take a course taught by Mr. Schombert.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! This is the hardest class I have ever taken. I read the reviews before taking the class and I thought I could do it. I thought that the people that found his class hard were lying. It turns out that they were right this class is so hard. I have put many hours into the class and I am still failing the class.
He is a brilliant astronomer but is terrible at teaching it to beginning students. This is an intro class and he spoke to us as if we are in a 400 level class. His class is so broad and his test have such specific questions. They are IMPOSSIBLE to study for. He does 100 multiple choice question tests. I failed all of them. Most people feel the same
He grades on a curve. I got a gross f and a net b. If that doesnt tell you how hard the class is, I dont know what will. The subject material is very broad and challenging. It includes everything from chemistry to quantum physics. That said, Schombert is extremely smart and interesting. Dont go into the class expecting to ace every test though!
Horrible. He's rude and condescending. Well taught class but I do not like him as a person. He there to get paid not to help out the student.
Tests are NOTHING like the quizzes given
I am here to warn anyone away from ever taking this man's class. By no means, ever, should one subject themselves to this. The material is tough, but what makes his class hard is the complete unwillingness to help from Schombert himself. No office hours, and the most you get in an email is to look at the lecture again. Save yourselves as I can't.
Take it if you want depression
For an online, asynchronous course this was horrible. He did not provide any office hours. There are about 2-4 quizzes a week and 3 tests over the term. Look for quizlets to help with the quizzes and then just hope for the best for those tests. There are better professors for astronomy. Do not put yourself through it. Not worth it.
Took this as an online course and lectures were vague at best and don't prepare you for quizzes and assignments at all. Quizzes are way more detailed than what he lectures about including a lot amount of calculations. For an intro level course, it's quite difficult and spend more time working on this class than upper division chem and math classes
Terrible communication skills with students and the design of the class is horrendous. The class is still run off an abyss blog from what looks like 2005.
The lectures were COMPLETELY unrelated to the quizzes. He was rude, and I had to drop the class because there was no way to study for the midterm. The material and lectures given NEVER related to the quizzes! He also doesn't hold office hours to get help if you need it (which you would because nothing makes sense). DO NOT take this class.
Extremely unsympathetic when communicating and was not flexible. Class was extremely difficult and taught on a separate page that was built in the dark ages
Prof Schombert is a great teacher who is enthusiastic about astronomy and has taken the time to break difficult topics down to supermarket math. Attending lectures and doing the homework should be enough to ace the tests. Also offered me guidance that ended up landing me a job.
When registering for Schombert's class I was extremely worried due to the overwhelmingly negative reviews he seems to have, but I absolutely adored the HC 441 class I took with Schombert. He is truly a very funny guy (some jokes are on the fence of being okay and I hope he changes that at some point). His lectures were fascinating and inspiring
I had the worst experience in this class, even when I put in the effort the quizzes and the lectures didn't match at all. He had no office hours and was very unapproachable. The grading system is really weird and I wasted a P/F when I had a B+. Save yourself the stress and take another class.
This professor is0/10, would never EVER take again.
This was probably the weirdest physics class that I've taken thus far at UO. Grading was just decided off of the homework assignments, but there weren't really deadlines or specific grading criteria (the questions were decently hard but he would help with them). Nice guy, has a lot of interesting knowledge, but the class is mostly in the homework.
Schombert has some of the worst communication skills I have seen from any professor I've had at the UO in 3 years. He teaches from his own website with minimal connection to Canvas which is super frustrating. When you miss one of the quizzes (which there are no reminders set for) he is very harsh about the consequences. Not an enjoyable class.
Schombert is a bitter professor who is unwilling to work with students based on their needs. His website is not connected to Canvas making the course extremely difficult to keep up with and stay organized in. His communication was aggressive and unsympathetic. As an ASTR prof., he should know best that the world does not revolve around him!
He is unaccommodating towards students and doesn't care about your success in the class. When people emailed him about missing the quizzes, he got annoyed, and he threatened that the next person to email him would drop a percentage of a letter grade. Said he wouldn't believe our "excuses" for missing the quizzes. Overall, super rude and unfunny.
Do NOT take this course, lectures did not correlate with quizzes or exams. He had no office hours and didn't use Canvas. Please just take another course!!!
DO NOT; he doesn't care for his students, does not have in-person office hours, and will reject you if you go up to him and ask him about the material in the class. He gives the bare minimum effort in person and can't even take the time to spell-check his tests and exams. The weekly tests have NOTHING to do with the exams.
I went into this class thinking it was going to be awful because of what people said about him on here. He doesn't waste time and often lets us out early. I really enjoyed it and I intentionally chose him as my professor again for my next term of astronomy because I like his teaching style so much. He was also very funny.
DO NOT. Take this mans classes if you can help it. He uses a completely different, janky website for literally everything; lectures are unfathomably long, drawn out, and go on rambles that dont mean anything; says there is no textbook required, but all test/quiz material pulls from the book instead of lectures.
The negative reviews are COMPLETELY unwarranted. The professor has a genuine love for astronomy which is VERY clear in lecture. The lecture notes contain lots of information to help with the quizzes and exams. The complaints about his website are simply wrong. It is incredibly easy to navigate and not hard to track. Fun jokes, and an amazing class.
Very online class, but also very easy.
It's an easy class, but the professor is very mean in emails and not helpful at all. Every email I sent professionally, I was responded to with a one-line just blatantly mean response.
You do not really do anything. Currently he is suffering from medical issues and commonly doesn't hold class. I assume he is retiring soon, so these issues will persist in any classes he teaches moving forward. You dont learn much in class, kinda felt like we got robbed of a course that should have been educational.
